Blog Cabin 2008: First Look!
Hello Everyone!
Only days after the joyous giveaway of Blog Cabin 2007 to Joyce Bennett, a few of us were able to travel to the site of Blog Cabin 2008 - and we were blown away!
The first thing that greeted us as we pulled into the lot were two deer only 100 yards away. They took a fleeting interest in us before moving on (too quickly for us to get our cameras ready), but gorgeous Mother Nature was all around us. Although the weather has been dry, the colorful leaves of fall are still trying to hang on.
As we traversed the build site, we were able to capture some shots of the lot and shoreline. As we worked to capture images for a 360-degree tour (coming soon!), we were greeted by two representatives of Lakefront Estates, who filled us in on all the wonderful details of the area. It was a great first impression.
I've included a few images from our experience, with the promise that much, much more is coming.
Warm wishes,
Watson Hawkins, Manager, DIYnetwork.com

This is a wonderful site (and sight!). I will enjoy being part of the process for next year's cabin.
As a disabled person, I would like to see the next cabin be more handicapped-accessible. I would have loved to have won this year's, but would not have been able to reach the second floor easily.

What a spectacular location for the next cabin! I look forward to seeing all the plans unfold in the coming months. You picked an awesome site! It will be the perfect setting to showcase all the talent involved in making a perfect cabin. :) Thanks for sharing.

Oh my! This new location is gorgeous! The last Blog Cabin was awe inspiring, and I can't wait to see the next one. I hope Amy will host again. She was so much fun!

Love your shows. My first question on the green blog cabin is its general location. I would then be able to better judge the weather condions for the area on an average seasonal condition. I watched several informative programs today on green homes containing several different styles of building, heating, and providing a much smaller ECO footprint in general. Do you think you will be able to obtain a "Platinum" rating?
Posted by: Thomas Slater at November 11, 2007 11:01 PM
Looks amazing, I sure hope a boat dock and some canoes are in the plans.
Posted by: Amanda S at November 12, 2007 10:08 AM
Thanks for posting my last comment. I have since found the lot lacation and, like many others, look forward to the progress of the build. I can already picture my wife and I watching the beautiful sunrises with a hot cup of java and listening to the wildlife from the privacy of our screened-in back porch. Perhaps I might even be able to convince her to go sailing occationally (she can't swim) with the proper equipment.
Posted by: Thomas Slater at November 12, 2007 10:36 AM
What a beautiful sight, I must say you have picked a perfect location for the Blog Cabin I can just picture watching the beautiful sunsets while sitting on the porch, And just taking in the beautiful sights and sounds of nature. Can't wait.

Somehow you missed the link for "Lakefront Estates" highlighted in orange, that's in Watson Hawkins blog. It not only gives the location where the 2008 Green Blog Cabin will be built, but other information as well. It's worth clicking on in his blog. If for some reason you are unable to access that link, post another message so someone can help you. Good Luck. Kathy Seals

Something I seen in the 2007 cabin that most people give any thought to, is handicap accessibility. Being a disabled vetern myself, I'm always looking for things like that.
Posted by: Ray Zellers at November 14, 2007 9:24 PM
Looks like a GREAT site!!! I can't wait. Dito on having Amy back. How about both Amys.
Posted by: Bruce Darrow at November 14, 2007 11:57 PM
This area certainly reminds me of the days when I was stationed at U.S. Coast Guard Group Paris Tennessee in the northwestern section of Tennessee right on the Tennessee River. Crisp, clean air, bright water near the lakes of Kentucky. How I would love to win the Blog Cabin 2008 and relocate back to Tennessee from Boston, Ma. I really enjoyed the folks in Tennessee. Even through I am a "Yankee" y'all would not have to say to me twice to move if I won, that's for sure.
Keep building Amy, I'll keep entering and who know's maybe my luck will hit.

yea it is really pretty, but can you build it and not take away anything? And keep it pretty, and i agree i want the same people that did the last one.

After seeing the location and water, a boat dock is a must.
Posted by: Mike at November 18, 2007 6:19 PM
The site is awesome and oh so peaceful, my lucky number is 5.
The last log cabin was spectacular. The wood carving and hand made on site lighting rod, to me was completely perfect. You had my favorite lady do the bath. WOW!
Great luck on surpassing that log cabin.
Thanks for a fantastic show, Carolyn.

WOW! like everyone else, Thanks DIY for sharing this great prize with so many of us. Anything you build I know I will love, especially if the picturesque view is taken into account and can be enjoyed without obscured items, from both within and outside. Therefore, place the porches, screened in room and decking off to the sides of the home, allowing for uninterrupted internal views through rear picture windows - A large entertainment viewing room - I could visualize any winners living in there year round. Thanks for building another prize home, especially on such a wonderful lot. I hope the homes interior is no smaller than 2,500 square feet in size

Thank you for giving us a chance to do another cabin. This one should be one floor for the people who cannot do the stairs to the second floor. Also it should be handicap access so everyone can have a chance. Great location and beautiful view.
Posted by: Julie Dowhower at November 30, 2007 10:44 AM
I too was disappointed not to win the 2007 cabin but I did get the pleasure of seeing it while we were in Townsend in November. I managed to get a picture of it from the top of the driveway. Boy now I see why that hill was a problem during construction.
I will be watching for more postings on the new Blog cabin.

The new land for the blog cabin is just gorgeous! The lake views are just beautiful and animals to see is Exciting. Just knowing the blog cabin is nearly in progress and a private boat dock possible is just unbelievable. Looks like another piece of land I can fall in love with and right where my husband dreams of being year round right on the lake. And again located in the beautiful state of Tennessee. We love Tn. So Lakefront Estates, Spring City, Tn. Watts Bar Lake. We can't wait to see this new blog cabin 2008 we all will be dreaming of someday very soon. I'm so excited can't wait to see the voting options and new series this coming year and am so thankful that diy is doing this for another family this coming year.

Yes, anybody want to build a great year round vacation spot for all the family and friends? I have the plans for this one. lets center with a Great room, say about 25x30ft , and get those stone boy's back we need to double the fireplace size. i'll go for the dock but keep it small and off to the side lets not turn this into a complex resort.

The 2008 Site is a great location with views and lake access. Inclusion of garage with with additional storage area for recreation items such as a snow mobile, atv, snowblower, lake boat, and storage of outdoor equipment would be and added bonus to the new cabin. The garage could be place underneath the cabin to reduce the footpad on the property and keep the scenic views.

Since Rose called me out about Canada vs. Canadian geese, I thought I would check it out. Looks like we are both correct, Rose, but thank you for keeping me on my toes!
American Heritage Dictionary:
Canada goose or Canadian goose
n. A common wild goose (Branta canadensis) of North America, having grayish plumage, a black neck and head, and a white throat patch.

We've really enjoyed watching the progression of 2007 Blog cabin on New Years Day. What a neat concept for the show, as well as a beautiful home as the end result! You've chosen an excellent site for the 2008 Blog Cabin. Eastern Tennessee is amazing for it's lakes, mountains, and wildlife. A Blog/log cabin in this setting is inspirational.

This is a first for me...blogging about the cabin. I agree with Carrie, the cabin should not be overwhelming. It's the simple things in life that bring happiness. With a view like this cabin will have, what else is needed...except maybe a fireplace that is accessible from the outside? Great for roasting marshmallows and hot dogs with the kids! Happy New Year everyone.
Posted by: Beth Henderson at January 1, 2008 11:51 PM
I absolutely 'love' this piece of land. It is great that all three floorplans have porches facing the back. I can imagine sitting in a handmade rocker, blanket snuggled around, drinking a cup of coffee and watching the morning sun melting the mist coming off the lake on a beautiful autumn morning. It would be very peaceful to see the full moon reflected upon the still waters on a warm summer night and have a cool breeze softly blowing. Ohhhhh, I envy whomever wins this house already. ~grins~ Have fun with it.

It just takes my breath away! This is so very beautiful that I just can't do it justice! My husband & I have done some travel in this area & it is everything you say it is. Plus the area people are so very friendly. This would be a dream come true - Although my husband is retired from the Navy & has spent half his life on the water - he never went kayaking till I introduced him to it. Now he loves it. This would be a perfect launching site. Don't really even need a dock but I'm sure others will. Personally I prefer the peacefulness of kayaking. With John at my side I might even be able to learn how to sail! I agree with other to leave the site as undisturbed as possible since it is so magnificent. When you look as something like this, you just have to feel closer to God and His touch on this earth. Makes me feel responsible to help keep it that way. Thanks for the pictures - I'm looking forward to seeing more! Sorry - but I am not getting the numbers to post to prevent spam!

So happy for the family that won the 2007 Blog Cabin. The 2008 lakeside site is awesome. As a boating family we can surely appreciate all the fun the new location holds. Yes, a dock would be a good idea along with a basement for garage to keep one's water toys. Looking forward to casting our votes!

This site is so beautiful and peaceful! A great place for kayakers! I turned my husband on to kayaking and he loves it too! After 20 years in the Navy he once said he didn't care for being on the water any more - Talk about a 180! Now all he wants is to retire to a log home on a lake w/me! Oh, did I tell you how smart he is? We've been looking at log cabins and site for a while now - both of us are very excited about this new project! You guys are great!

Is this the episode where they built the beautiful cabin in the woods; had to haul the truck up the dirt road using a pickup? I loved it! They made the broom with the broom-maker? That was so interesting to see. The end-result was great...but...
Did they have to paint that rug onto the floor? To me, that looked way out of place there. It seemed to subtract from the wooden floor. :(

I think I'll pass on this one ya'll.....The cabin may be beautiful, but the area is just going to end up another subdivision.
I am so sick of seeing all these subdivisions being built down south.
Yes it's nice now, but after folks move in, the deer will be gone, the geese will be skittish, and your serene and quiet will only be a memory.

If your going to go green you need to think green in a multifunctional level such as constructing a fire place to work as a augment to the heating system (hence this will aid in the cost reduction of the heating bill in the winter), also in the placement of the floor plan you can move it or tweek it so that the sun will play a large role in lighting and heating year round.

This is beautiful country and a cabin of any design should be a great enjoyment for anybody who wins. Make it Earth friendly and as semi-self sufficient as possible. A metal roof would make a lasting impression on the surroundings. I have never won anything , but this would be a lasting appreciation from someone who could use a little pick-me up.

WHAT A PLACE! AT MY AGE JUST THINKING ABOUT A PLACE LIKE THIS MAKES MY HEART JUMP. I HAVE NEVER OWNED A FREE STANDING HOME OF ANY KIND. ALWAYS LIVED IN APARTMENTS AND CONDOS. VERY SMALL ONES AT THAT. IT'S ONLY A DREAM, BUT WHAT A WAY TO SPEND THOSE "GOLDEN YEARS". A PLACE TO REALLY LOOK AT THE FACE OF GOD. A PLACE TO WALK AND TALK TO GOD EVERYDAY. IT WOULD JUST BE A DREAM COME TRUE. I WOU;D BE SO GRATEFUL FOR A PLACE LIKE THIS. I REALLY HOPE THE WINNER TRULY APPRECIATES WHAT A GIFT THIS WOULD BE.

Hi Amy,
I think this cabin is my home.....lol. My town is dying and everyone moving elsewhere. My wife hates it here and I am ready to move. My wife moved from Memphis to Little Rock, Ar. to where I live now. I am ready to blog and vote! I am wishing Good Luck and Good Blogging to everyone, including you Amy.

Hi all,
Everyone is right! It would be wonderful to be blessed with this log cabin. My husband, Keith, has been disabled for many years. As it gets closer to my retirement, I keep thinking of our dream to own a log cabin in a place somewhat secluded where we can enjoy nature and peaceful living. My family is from Northern Tennessee and I have thought of moving to TN for a number of years. After having my second back surgery in December, it may be that I have to retire sooner than I had planned. I too, wish that I win this (sure to be beautiful) home, but there are so many deserving people that I wouldn't be envious, just happy for them. God Bless!

I would like to see a paved driveway to this cabin. Since Tennessee is in the "tornado belt", the cabin needs a basement with a FEMA-approved safe room.
Porches should be at least 12 ft. deep to accomodate porch swing and rocking chairs with a table to hold beverages, etc. It would be nice if the cabin were wheelchair-accessible and perhaps have an elevator for "us old folks".
(Of course I think it should come with money to pay taxes for the winner. LOL)
When the show starts showing weekly progress, please show more detail works and less "fluff and chitchat".
I enjoy your program, and actually visited the finished cabin from last year.
However, the road leading to it was so steep, narrow and muddy, I had to view it from top of the long driveway.

I agree with the green living model and I vote for the San Jacinto model. I LOVE the lake setting and totally agree it needs a dock setting to be complete. And of course, a screened in porch and deck facing the lake would be awesome! I am in complete agreement with a full basement - amen to Tennessee 'the tornado belt'! I am an original Tennessee girl myself and there are far too little basements in this state.

All I can say is WOW!!! You guys/gals have a fantastic show and have created an incredible group of professionals. Together, these shows are bringing the dreams and hobbies of several people that like to do DIY projects themselves to reality!!! Keep up the good work as these projects are very entertaining and give people lots of ideas on their own projects. I cant believe how beautiful these blog homes are. I have always dreamed of building my own log cabin. Love it
Thanks,
Bert

Hey what a great site breathtaking ! Dont screen in the front porch leave it open to take in the views in the elements. Cant go wrong with a lake view. Definately needs a dock. thanks for listening lyn

This is a beautiful cabin site... I think we all dream of having a waterfront getaway like this one! It's been fun voting on the design, etc., and I feel like I'm designing it for myself. Maybe I'll have a picture of my family walking on that shore someday to hang inside the cabin! :o)

Not only is this a great place, but I really like the idea that it comes unfurnished. That way, the cabin can be "dressed-up or dressed-down" as the owner sees fit...and there is room for the valued items one already owns. It would be my year-round home, not a vacation place.

I spent 12 summers living in a cabin on a lake in my youth. To me, this is the ultimate refuge for a family and a great place to invite friends. I enjoy nature and there is nothing like a cabin on the water to bring nature into your life. Congratulations on the design and the site. Whoever wins will have a life that can't be beat!
