Kitchen Features, Flooring, plus a Surprise Category

That's right, faithful and cheery bloggers, more features are here to face judgment. This two-week run has you deciding bathroom fixtures (three great choices: think about the entire cabin as you decide), kitchen sink (I sense a battle brewing on this one), kitchen backsplash, rear foyer flooring, a basement Man Caves theme and - reiterating that we have a sense of humor around here - you, and you, and you (and especially YOU) will decide whether one of our contractors, Simon (yes, from Season 1 of Blog Cabin) keeps his beard or not!

Feel free to defend your choices below. If you are a first-time blogger, we want to hear from you! Don't let the regulars have all the fun ...

Good morning bloggers! Mom says hello to one and all, and hopes you are all doing well, and come sneak her OUT OF THERE! She wanted me to remind you that whatever is used on the kitchen floor should be rather soft to avoid as much breakage as possible. Also, I told her about the items up for vote and she picked them over the phone. I will print them out and take them up to her this afternoon or tomorrow morning. Dad is off for Peru again. He brought back pretties for us all! He got mom a beautiful turquoise and silver necklace with big chunks of turquoise. She hasn't seen it yet, but he told her about it and she cried. She doesn't know when she will be able to get it around her neck! PLEASE, SHAVE THAT BEARD. Such a handsome guy, why would you want all that itchy hair on your face, especially when summer will be here eventually? It looks like everything Mom picked is winning or neck and neck with another item, so this will be an exciting vote! She said to tell you guys hello again, that she misses this and your comments, funny and learned, and can't wait to get back online with you. I've got to run to get some errands done, so you guys hold down the "fort" and keep up the good work.

God bless you all, you are all worthy bloggers!

Erika, the daughter.

Yes Simon, it's time for the beard to go. I say keep you "fur" during cold weather but as soon as you feel the warm sun shinning, get out the razor.

Posted by: Chris Taylor at February 25, 2008 12:50 PM

Cabincraver Hi to both you and you mom hope you are felling better. My wife saw Simon's beard and said for you to shave it off it makes you look too old. Question in this Man Caves will you have a Bar? If entertainment win's out you need a place to keep refreshments and some eats. Looks like about all of us like the same choices this round of voting. Goog luck to all

Posted by: clifton t wilder at February 25, 2008 1:14 PM

first off, let me say i'm a STRAIGHT GUY.

i personally think because i am secure with MY sexuality, that 'simon' should shave his beard, or atleast trim it way down.
thats just my opinion.
now in reality, this is a CABIN which should be more on the manly side, and he is the contractor, and whats more manly then a big scruffy beard?

Posted by: ADAM bailey at February 25, 2008 1:15 PM

so god bless cabincraver. and erika of coarse. i agree this guy is just tooo cute to hide his face with a beard.[my husband has a beard so im ok with them but hes hidding a double chin!!! the sink i have an apron sink and its the star of my kitchen soooo pretty and easy to clean, you can get a double basin. also it looks great with the cabinets remember these are craftman style. i also like the tile for the backsplash. and stained concrete but tile would be ok, but let me tell you when i wash my tile floors the water beads up and takes quite awhile for it to dry [dont much like that !] man cave well i would put the tv upstairs so to enjoy the view and do spa work out room downstairs. well carry on bloggers

Posted by: colleen at February 25, 2008 1:17 PM

Question: Are we voting on the kitchen sink AND fixtures, or only on the sink itself?

Because, naturally, the sink I like and the fixtures I like are not together. I would be more concerned about the type of kitchen faucet used, more so than with the sink itself. Thinking arts and crafts cabinets might look a little odd with some of those faucet choices. (^_^)

Posted by: Tawanda at February 25, 2008 1:19 PM

Hello again! Simon, Simon, the early votes are in and it looks like you might be shaving soon. I saw the beard when it was first growing and it looked pretty good. Now it is just too long. Why not give us a Trim It choice?

I chose the brushed nickel for the faucets and I'm hoping that the dark stained faucet does not win. I just can't see that throughout the house. For me, it's a toss up between the stained concrete and the tile. I like them both. I would rather have a game room in the basement but if early voting is any indication, that home theatre is going to win out. Maybe there is enough room down there for both?

Happy voting everyone! ~Betty~

Posted by: Betty Wilcox at February 25, 2008 1:29 PM

Let Simon keep his beard till it warms up, I'm a contractor (also with a winter beard) and understand. Also I can tell alot of women vote on here, any man would want a gameroom in the man cave over a home theater, that is unless they're whipped :)

Posted by: BillB at February 25, 2008 1:47 PM

Whee-oo, you surprised us this time. I'll bet we were all a bit ga-ga to see the Man Cave selection And the Simon beard choice! What a cute way for all of us to have some fun with the blog.
Simon, I hope you haven't gotten too fond of your beard, 'cuz you gotta know that all of the ladies in this group would rather see that sweet handsome face of yours than all that hair-- right, ladies?
My choices for the backsplash and foyer floor this time was tile and tile. I like the granite, but thought that it might tend to be a bit overwhelming to have so much granite in one area. I wouldn't want anything to take away from all the other interesting kitchen features. Plus, I myself would sorta like those gorgeous cabinets to stand out--because they're so unique. The back splash, countertops and cabinets can all enhance each other!
For the kitchen sink I went for the undercounter sink because of aesthetic reasons. It really looked pretty against the backdrop of the garden window in the picture. Since we are going to have a garden window in the kitchen, thanks to Darlene's good taste, why not enjoy the whole pie?
Lastly, I chose the exercise/fitness man cave because everyone already has televisions all over their house for the most part. And, I'd venture to say that very few of us have a special spot to keep all the members of our family physically fit. It would be especially good for those of you with health problems that require therapy of any kind. However, that's just my slant on the choices, I hope all of you have as much fun as I did when you vote for your own choices.
That's it for now, except for a great big thanks to all the powers that be at DIY for giving us such good choices to vote on, and for making it fun!

I was wondering if the uppermost bathroom doors could be changed from swinging to pocket doors, as these are quite minimal space bathrooms.
Also the sink sits across from the stove. Could we have a spigot placed above the stove for pot filling.
Perhaps the laundry should be moved down to the basement in the utility area. Then expand the kitchen back abit and install the elevator where the laundry room is now. Hey, a straight shot from the kitchen to the Man Cave and access to the garage. That should fill a lot of needs . That is , if pre-planned walls are not bearing walls of course.

Posted by: BlognBob at February 25, 2008 2:26 PM

Aw... the kitchen sink. I have lots of experience in this area. Dishes, etc. Since we are going with granite, undermount is the only way to go. I voted for the sink with the work area. I ask the bloggers to consider that even with a dishwaher there are things that do not go into a dishwasher that need to be washed. That work area is a great place to put those things.
Granite backsplash will not very likely be easily damaged or need to be replaced. Tile isn't as easy to clean - grout lines- as granite. That's important in a kitchen.
I want to add a comment about the elevator/dumbwaiter discussion. Has anyone considered the size of the elevator that would be needed to accomodate a wheelchair and another person? I don't want to seem indelicate here but most people don't want an elevator in their house unless it is necessary, not to mention the cost of maintainence. Please don't think that I am desparaging of handicapped people. That would not be true. My question is about needs of most of the people.

Posted by: Jenny at February 25, 2008 2:46 PM

Before you shave it, trim it down and try some other looks. Much prefer clean shaven to the long-beard look (only works well in cold weather and for hunting). Besides, you don't want all that sawdust getting in there, safety hazard too...

Not sure if granite on granite is a good look for the back splash. I agree, need to remember the type of cabinets when thinking about this vote. Would like to see a deep double sink option for the winner. Someone suggested a pot filler for the sink...great idea. Tile in foyers just looks awesome, don't like cleaning the dirt and grit out of the grout lines though. If cork wins, there are options that look like hardwood flooring, keep that in mind, the "squares" aren't the only options here.

When is groundbreaking????? Will we get a sneak-peak video?

Thanks for my 2-cents worth!

Posted by: Cathy P. at February 25, 2008 2:55 PM

Thank you for doing something with the walk-out basement.

Whatever option is selected, please also have a bathroom (or, at least stubbed out plubing & electric that could be finished later). This way, if the exercise room is selected, one could take a shower after (same for coming in from playing outside) or have a place to go for those using the game room or theatre.

Then, have porous pavers for the patio outside under the upstairs porches/decks. And, that outside fireplace -- below the upstairs one in the Great Room with the opposite one on the deck.

i understand that most people have ideas on how to design the overall look of a 'dreamhome'
i also understand that most people want experience (either pro or semi-pro) when it comes to the outward design of their home.
I'm here to say that, while I'm only amateur and they are only ideas right now that are yet to be realized.
I'm looking into becoming a pro home designer, a pro home designer that thinks "outside the box", a pro home designer that has "tomorrow's" ideas, a pro home designer that wants to be a 'trend-setter' not a "trend-follower".
i think just because they built homes in one shape back in the 20s doesn't mean that todays homes should also be that way.
i design dreams and far out ideas.

Hope it is OK to post this note to Ms Branim without having voted on the beard issue .... Since I don't know the reasons behind growing the beard, I'm torn as to how to vote. Come on.... out with it .... why did you do it in the first place?????

Now...on to the actual post I am directing to:

Hello Ms. Branim ….

I know you must be very busy, and that the Blog Cabin is not the only home on your drawing board, but, if you could spare a couple of minutes, there are several questions/comments that keep popping up in the posts and your input on these matters would be greatly appreciated.

1. Can you please clarify, for all of us who are novice blueprint/floor plan viewers out here in Blog Land: Will the 2008 Blog Cabin be built as a mirror image of the floor plans posted on the Blog site? The benchmarks on the drawings seem to point in that direction. To clarify the question: Will the Master Bedroom and Garage and Driveway be closer to Lot 4 or to Lot 6?

2. The Restrictions and the Covenants in Lake Front Estates seem to be quite explicit and the task of the A.C.C., it would appear, is to make certain, by written approval, that the conditions set forth in the R & C are met by each homebuilder prior to the start of construction and, then, prior to the start of landscaping. While they have the power to weigh the merit of each blueprint on an individual basis, some items appear non-negotiable. In reading the R & C, it was noted that the developer chose the first members to oversee its implementation. Are you, or any member of your company, a member of the A.C.C?

3. The Covenants and Restrictions are very clear on the subject of vents: no vents of any kind shall be visible or located on the front roof line. Since all the bathrooms are located in the front portion of the cabin, do the vent requirements pose any problems in obtaining the A.C.C.’s written approval to move forward? If memory serves me correctly, the trap for the toilet bowl and certain other vents must be bent, while other bathroom exhaust vents cannot be bent and must run straight and true to the outside in order to avoid the build up or reverse flow of fumes and noxious gases within the home. Just curious: Has the Blog cabin blueprints received a special dispensation from the A.C.C. in regards to placement of the bathroom vents? Do you foresee any major setbacks in moving forward with approval of the plans by the A.C.C.?

3. Did the window revisions on the front of the house and the new configuration in the Master Bedroom, as well the ‘now you see it, now you don’t door leading to the side porch from the “Mud Room” just not make it to the drawing board before the floor plans were posted on the Blog, or have you decided to make other alterations to these areas? And, with the many comments about the problems associated with leaking and fogging glass on Garden Windows, coupled with the lack of direct sun to the area because of the roof on the porch, will you be rethinking the window over the sink in the kitchen so as to eliminate the possibility of leakage problems and unsuccessful plant propagation due to lack of sunlight?

3. Any chance the elevator or the “stack a closet” option that the Muse mentioned, or the requests for a dumbwaiter and/or laundry chute that have generated so many comments and support by the Bloggers will become a reality in the 2008 Blog Cabin?

3. And, just one more thing. When you issue the complete “what you see is what you get” floor plan, could you please, have your blueprint person refrain from calling the area off the kitchen a REAR ENTRY. It is very confusing for many of us to have a room on the front of the house labeled Rear (anything). The only way this space could be a true rear entry is if your intention is to build the cabin with the front of the house facing Watts Barr Lake. It's not a big deal, it just does cause confusion for some of us who keep trying to flip the plans around in our minds so that they 'fit' on the lot. So, if you would, it could be labeled an entrance leading to the kitchen from the RIGHT front corner of the houses (if the cabin is a mirror image of the plans posted). Or, better yet, put in cubbies for shoes, boots, and some hooks for coats, hats and fishing poles and Label it a Mud Room. Add a deep farmer’s sink and it becomes the perfect spot to soak those muddy jeans from a slip slid down to the lake, or the “place to cool down the extra beverages and watermelon” for those fun gatherings on lazy summer afternoons (without having to traipse through the house into the kitchen to retrieve them). It’s a marvelous little space… full of possibilities! You can choose to call it any number of things…. So many great options! But, don’t your agree that Rear Entry doesn't do it justice? (unless, of course, the front of the house is going to face the back yard, and, in that event, never mind,)

Thanks in advance, Ms. Branim and DIY Blog Cabin Team, for answering these questions and understanding about our desire to have a look at a floor plan with all the proper bells and whistles in place so we can move ever forward with our wishful exchanges of banter and ideas. We are a curious bunch out here and eager to hear from you soon!

Posted this question under the old comments in error:

Is there a place to view the plat of the cabin lot? If so, please direct me.

If not, would it be possible to post for all to see. Would be nice to view the boundaries, shoreline, etc. in relationship to the cabin.

How close are/will be the neighbors? That would certainly help clarify some fencing needs.

Thanks again.

I watched a house flipping show last week, and it had a lot of stained concrete flooring it in, which I thought I would hate. But, I loved it! It was really neat, and they could make it look so many different ways...plus it is a green option! I also wanted to put a word in for the metal backsplash. We already have granite countertops, let's do something different for the backsplash. Metal can be made to look so many different ways. I was thinking it would look cool to have the old tin ceiling tile look. What to you all think?

Posted by: Amanda at February 25, 2008 3:34 PM

Hellloooo DIY!

Once again, very nice options to choose from.

What a sensational home this will be...thank you for allowing our family to help in the choices!

Happy Logging~

Posted by: UnspokenMiztie at February 25, 2008 3:37 PM

I agree with Tawanda; it was hard to vote for the sink and faucet separately. I will probably vote a little differently next time now that I have seen all possible combinations. DIY - I hope you will keep this in mind as far as what you install eventually. Not all the combinations look equally good no matter what my fellow bloggers vot for, eg., bronze fixture with stainless sink. Onward and upward!

Posted by: Tingoat at February 25, 2008 4:29 PM

I love the changes, the location, everything about this cabin is a dream. I do agree, a tankless
hot water heater would be marvelous!
What a wonderful place this will be.

Posted by: Sharon at February 25, 2008 4:29 PM

That beard must go...what a hunk!

I love the new choices but I wish that the bath fixtures could include a burnished copper...the bronze is too dark.

That back foyer is amazing...what a wonderful area to enter from the yard or lake.

When will the entry period begin?

Posted by: Susan C at February 25, 2008 4:31 PM

Shave it... please! I think the ceramic sinks would look better than the stainless steel with the arts and crafts style. I think the faucets will look very good with the A & C style too. The tile would look good, but just not the tiles in the pictures. I like the beadboard, maybe incorporate both??

Posted by: Jordyn at February 25, 2008 4:40 PM

Hello and I wish you and 'Mom' good health. I am loving this blog cabin, my husband and I caught the tv program on this last week, and we enjoyed watching the challenges and everything coming together. He has his own construction business and enjoys learning from your program.

Simon needs to loose the beard, what a hottie without it........

I would like to give my concerns about under the counter sinks, we really cannot get the whole picture until we see it put in place, but wouldn't an under the counter sink allow water and debris get caught under the edges between the counter and the sink? I was wondering if the clean up would be not so worth it. Its not a bad idea, however, all of the sinks would be better if a work place could be incorporated. Keeping clean up easy and less messy has always been a plus for me.

TO Cathy P at February 25, 2008 3:28 pm.

Hi: Here is the information I posted when someone had a similar request for more detailed info on the lot, etc. . Hope the answer meets your needs

TO: Sue from Florida at February 23,2008 at 4:47P.M.
And anyone else wanting more detailed information about Lot 5 and the Convenants and Restrictions for Lakefront Estates.

Hi Sue..
Don't blame yourself for not finding the info on the first or second go-round at the website. I had a copy of the original. Since several people have indicated that they would like to read the thing first hand, there is a way to get to see a copy for yourself. It took a bit of detective work to uncover the 'secret handshake' that opened up new windows on the site, and I am happy to pass on the info. now.

Just go to the homepage for Lakefront Estates and click on the "contact us" spot at the bottom (or top)of the page. Once you Request more information about lot size, etc., an email arrives that gives you a password and sign-in name for the 'Sales Kit' area of the site. Armed with that information, go back to the Home Page, go down to the area marked 'sales kit', click it, put in the info supplied by the LFE Rep. and you are on your way to see the dimension of all the lots, as well the option to open a PDF (file) of the Covenants and Restrictions.

And Never fear .... I will continue posting C & R information for those who do not want to request their own 'secret handshake' to the other portals on the Lakefront Estates website.

HI cabincraver and family glad to hear mom is feeling much better! what a lucky lady to get peruvian turquoise from her sweetheart!
I agree 100% bloggers! Simon, off with that scruffy beard! Did you hear me, Simon: I'm voting OFF WITH THAT BEARD, Pleasssseeeeeeee shave it on the first episode! YOU LOOK MUCH BETTER WITHOUT IT!!!!!!

Posted by: Carrie MIracle at February 25, 2008 6:53 PM

Shave it off.

I would prefer anything but granit counter tops. When you chip or crack one, you have to replace the whole thing.

Posted by: Pam at February 25, 2008 6:54 PM

Love the new items to vote on...like the raw edge granite back splash. Also like the apron sink or farm sink as we call it. As for "keep it" or "shave it"....Your to cute to cover that baby face!!

Posted by: VICKIE at February 25, 2008 6:57 PM

I just voted and glad to see so many of you have such wonderful taste :-)
Tell Simon I voted to remove the beard or at least he should trim it. He is handsome either way. I would be a proud Mama if my 22 year old brought home a young man like him!

Posted by: Ruthie at February 25, 2008 7:12 PM

My favorite feature regarding the sinks would be the one with the workstation to keep the mess in the sink and off the counter; while still giving ample space for large pots to be cleaned. I guess I thought about how the sinks would be used and since I love to cook; it was, to me, the best choice. I was surprised how many voted for the undercounter sink...What feature about the under counter sink did I miss? I have been seemed to always vote with the majority...but I missed this one...

Posted by: Renlady at February 25, 2008 8:02 PM

Clive & I think Simon should keep the beard and try to join ZZ Top for any tours they do in TN. OK just kidding. Clive has a beard and I love it but it's not quite as 'rustic' as Simons. I agree with Clive, maybe a sponsored charity shave?

Posted by: Susan D at February 25, 2008 8:20 PM

Simon, Simon, lose the beard. Too cute to cover up.

Loving the house

Posted by: Janet at February 25, 2008 8:22 PM

I love all the choices AGAIN!! My brother does stained concrete. The choices are endless and are beautiful! They are easy to take care of and environmentally friendly.

Lets see...”man” room???...Well, I'm not a man, but I love two of the choices for the “man” room and would be joining MY man in either one!! I say the game room is great and we hang a flat screen on the wall. Viola!! Two in one! One or two cozy chairs and that would do it! Get your exercise outside! Swimming, walking and biking are fun, and they are so fun, you forget its exercise. I mean who wants to "workout" in a place like this? You see fellow bloggers, that is what I have to tell myself to get exercise! The word itself seems so demanding! So I bike, swim, and walk and enjoy myself. It’s just so much more pleasant and I end up getting all the benefits without feeling like I “HAD” to do it!! (If you really have to work out then walk, bike or swim to the clubhouse! They have an exercise room!)

I love the under the counter sink with the dark faucets. With a granite counter top, I think it would just be luxurious. I also think that granite on granite might be a bit much. It was hard to choose between tile and metal. Metal could be a beautiful contrast and would reflect the beauty of the granite. Also it’s easy to clean. This vote, I went for the tile just because, depending on the style, it can be very decorative without getting too busy!

Simon, Simon, Simon, lose the beard. You are such the hunk! What a cutie. If you're not married or otherwise hooked up, man do I have a girl for you! She's my fairy god-daughter! She is a beauty and I'm always looking out for her! LOL

Thanks DIY for making this so much fun!

Hello Bloggers!

So many new things to vote on WOW!

keight Thank you for the Covenants and Restrictions for the Lakefront Estates.

Where do you find these things? I've been all over Lakefront Estates web site and didn't see them posted there. I was looking for the ones about the size the house has to be, but couldn't find them. I thought I had read that the house had to be no smaller than 2600 feet. (or is it no larger) Do you know where I can find that info.

I agree with you A. Muse move the powder room to back foyer and put in an elevator. or the dumbwaiter.

Windows, again no matter the style please let them be high-perforamce, triple-paned, gas-filled windows that can help to make the cabin be more energy-efficient and comfortable.

Tank-less water heaters and radiant heating and a rain catching system and a greywater irrigation system Please!

Thanks

A great face like Simon's should be seen, not furred!

Posted by: Kathy at February 25, 2008 8:50 PM

Yes, Simon take the beard off. It makes you look older with it on.
This has been so much fun. If only it was this easy to have a new home.
I hope whoever wins the home, needs it. I know I do!!

Posted by: Susan Henle at February 25, 2008 9:06 PM

Hi bloggers, I just wanted to say that the cork will be alot nicer to people like me who uses a cane to get around. When tile gets wet I go flying. Plus it will be nice to have a sink that is not so low. I am tall with a bad back and would rather not have the sink sunkin down. I am looking forward to seeing the final results.

Posted by: Yvonne at February 25, 2008 9:30 PM

The apron sink is my first choice. I think it will complement the A & C cabinets and the granite countertops. Another reason I chose the "apron" is cabinets & drawers underneath kitchen sinks take a beating and look a little more worn than the other cabinets after time. The pot-filler - excellent suggestion. Would like to see hardwood floors in kitchen though - warmer and softer than tile but still durable. Like the suggestion of a bar in the Man Cave, too.

Posted by: Janine at February 25, 2008 9:39 PM

Hi,
Simon please get rid of the beard. You are too handsome to hide that face. I am very pleased with all the choices on the blog cabin so far.

Posted by: Marcy at February 25, 2008 10:02 PM

I think it would be nice to have a wood pellet stove in the basement to add heat/warmth to the basement. Since this doesn't require a seperate chimney, the cost would be only the stove and exhaust and intake staks. I can't tell what the basement elevation of the cabin is and if there is going to be a walk out basement entrance/exit.

Posted by: DaveS at February 25, 2008 10:08 PM

Hi everyone,

Shave the beard or trim it at least.

Bronze faucet is to dark and to hard to keep looking nice. Brushed nickel is a nice change from the chrome. Not to mention will be easier to match with other fixture and items for the bathroom.

Backsplash should complement the counter top and since granite was choosen for the counter top, I think granite would give it a nice finish look, anything else would make it look to busy or like someone didn't know what they where doing.

I choose tile for the entry flooring, I wish slate was a choice as that would have been really awesome.

I went with the home theatre choice for the man cave, even though I would also love to have the spa/exercise room. Maybe they could throw a treadmill into the home theatre and make it dual purpose.

DIY Blog Cabin Staff,
Great concept, I'm sure that everyone is really enjoying the fact that all of us have a say about what goes into the construction of the cabin.

Having multiple choices to vote on is good, but I agree with previous voters that it is hard to pick some items unless they can be shown in concert with the things they will be married to.

Kitchen for example:
* How can we pick flooring, cabinets, counter tops, sinks, faucets and appliances without knowing how it will look as a completed room?
It would be much more efficient if you did (voted on) one room at a time and set up your web page to show how everything would look together, this would be more feasible than doing it piecemeal as is being doing at the present time.

* Please go with the instant hot water heater, it will save on space and be more efficient than a tank.

* As for having an elevator I would build it outside the original walls to not waste inside space.

* Going "GREEN" is in folks, why are you not using Solar Panels on the cabins???

* Having a generator built in as part of the power system would be a great thing to have.

* The rear foyer should be a "true mud room" with places for hats, coats, overalls and of course "muddy boots".
A toilet and sink would be a great addition for this room so a trip through the house with muddy cloathes and boots wouldn't be necessary.
I'd even go as far as having a concrete floor with a drainage system so it could be hosed down for a quick cleaning.

* As for the "cave" I see no reason it can't be an entertainment AND game room if your idea of a game room is just a card table (albeit a fancy one.)

On the beard issue, as someone who grows one every year for the cold months I say "keep it dude" just trim it up for the ladies :)
The Grizzly Adams thing isn't cutting it!

The voting is going pretty much the way I'd plan it, "keep up the good work voters".

Thanks DIY for letting us be a part of this project!

Yes Watson, there might be a fight for the sink. The deep sink looks like a farm house sink and I think it would be more reflective of one seen in a cabin. If I could vote for only one thing in the kitchen, it would be a pot filler over the sink, it would be soooo convenient. Since the basement is below the master bedroom, would it be sound proof? Any one of the choices for the man cave would bring a lot of noise...
Thanks,

I love all the choices... But I have a real concern about accessing the back yard from the deck...If a child gets hurt or fall into the lake, nobody clould get to them in time! This is a serious saftey issue... We need steps leading down from the deck somewhere on the back!

Posted by: Susan at February 26, 2008 12:06 AM

I voted for the quartz countertops because I have it and it had a 10 year warranty on it, which the granite didn't. They now have it where germs and ect. cannot get into. Just can't remember what it is called. A lot of people do not even know about the quartz, as granite has been used more and for a longer time. More companies are making it now also. The only problem is you have to have good installers. I know DiYnetwork, uses excellent people for every detail put into your Blog Cabins, so it would be beautiful.

Posted by: jeanette at February 26, 2008 12:33 AM

Does anyone know how you can look at the pictures of the current choices to vote on AFTER you have already voted? I wanted to go back and look at the choices again, but once you have voted for the day, you can't look at the pictures again, unless there is a place I do not know about. Any help?

Posted by: Summer at February 26, 2008 12:52 AM

Forget all the choices for the cabin, Simon is way too handsome to have that scarey prospector beard cover his face. I'll buzz 'im myself. :)

Posted by: Tim G at February 26, 2008 1:36 AM

I really wish there would have been a larger stainless sink choice...with all the fish to clean you need more room. The man cave is a great idea for rainy days!

Posted by: cindy at February 26, 2008 2:02 AM

First of all Simon is way to cute to hide his face with a beard, you are after all a hunk as it has been said..relax..I'm married and happily so. ha ha. As for a real subjects. I liked the look of the oil rubbed bronze, I just think I would look more cabin like. I also like the tile for the back splash because the metal would seem out of place in a cabin and to add more granite would just put it over the top. But that's just my opinion. I really like reading all the different views. I've learned a lot. I'm no expert on building..I just know what I like. And if your building a cabin in TN. Then most of it should look as rustic as possible. I also like the home theater in the basement because of the storms that happen so frequently. If I'm going to spend the night in the basement at least I would have a chance of knowing whats going on if there was a TV there to keep me updated. But I still think I would rather have the ornate bathroom be the master bath and give the zen bath to the guest. Luv to all..happy blogging!

We agree with the majority - shave that beard
Good choices this time - we voted for the exercise equipment in the 'Man Cave' but that doesn't seem like a popular choice.
Keep up the good work DIY

Posted by: Priscilla at February 26, 2008 6:36 AM

Great choices this time! Have the same tile floor in my kitchen. Beautiful....and so easy to clean!

Simon, we like the boy next door look without the beard!

Love the idea of a tankless hot water heater!

Posted by: Sherronne at February 26, 2008 7:18 AM

oh yes the beard must go. why I hide such a handsome face. Now on the subject of a man cave why can't it be a girl cave. I have an exercise room and my own private sewing/crafting room in our basement. oh yes , there should be a bathroom in the basement, and a fridge.

I like the idea of the under counter sink , a much cleaner look , but I also like the idea of the sink with the cutting board area under the counter. I hope there will be a garbage diposal installed.

Posted by: shereen at February 26, 2008 7:20 AM

Once again, DIY, you've blown us away! We would have been delighted with an unfinished basement, and instead, you've given us the choice of a MAN CAVE! Er, wait a minute...don't you mean WOMAN CAVE??? OK, OK, if I'm the winner, my sons-in-law will have free reign over that area when they visit...for about 5 minutes until the NEXT generation piles in on them (while we women go shopping, Ha!)
Love the choices: the Oil rubbed bronze would go great with the Arts & Crafts cabinetry (and trim?) and carried through door hardware throughout the house.
Really great foyer choices, I'm torn! But the tile would be pretty in the SIDE ENTRY, while the stained concrete would be gorgeous throughout the basement, even the garage if well-sealed.
Tile backsplashes would mix it up and add warmth in the kitchen, granite on granite could look boring.
The sink with work surface would be fantastic, if only everyone could visualize it with more traditional faucets and surroundings!
And Simon, you are a doll to volunteer to do what the bloggers want!
Now, my heartbroken confession! I cannot get DIY network on my local (Charter) cable. Watch DIY to the Rescue on HGTV, but that is all! Any way to get video of the Blog Cabin shows?
ps: Cabincraver & Erica are remaining in my thoughts & prayers. Blogn Bob: Wow, thanks for the compliments (a genius w/brilliant intuition? I blush!) And ADAM Bailey: you go for it! Every pro has to start somewhere. I would suggest you take some classes on architecture, structural engineering, or construction while you're firming up your business plans.

This cabin is going to be so nice. Love the way we get to vote on everything so even though we may choose different things we do get a choice. The location near the lake is really nice. I grew up on a lake and everyday is different, with tons of things to do. It looks like the fishing would be very good too! L

Please shave it....looks way to scragly to stay and he is really cute under the beard!

Posted by: Phyllis at February 26, 2008 8:05 AM

I can't believe that tile won over stained concrete. As much as i love tile, the stained concrete would really tie in the outdoors with the home. The idea of using the stained concrete is to bring a bit of the natural out door beauty inside. I am not particularly fond of the stained concrete, but it would really look nice inside the blog cabin.

As for the contractor you look better without the beard.

Leo Zayas

Posted by: Leo Zayas at February 26, 2008 8:07 AM

I personally like the look of granite counter tops with granite back splash. I see metal back splashes a lot and it give me the feel like I am in the city. I always love the look of natural stone. Makes me feel like I am in a country setting.

Posted by: Leo Zayas at February 26, 2008 8:22 AM

First time blogger:

I agree that the beard on Simon gives him a "Mountain Man" look but with that smile it makes him look more like a character from the movie "Deliverance". Unless you like scaring kids, get rid of it.

As for the fixtures, it is pretty hard to picture it all together without the components being side by side. Since I just started visiting this site, I'll take some time to give it a closer look before I comment further.

Thank you DIY for offering this forum.

Good Morning Bloggers,
This is my first blog. Love being a part of something so unique. I have been basing my choices, to a large extent, on eco friendly products; as with the cork flooring. I realize that this is not the "Green House" but it is our responsibility to choose these products whenever we are given the opportunity. Thanks for letting me join in.
Love & Light

Please...vote for the undermount sink. It makes clean-up a BREEZE...and no lip for icky bits/soap scum/crud to get stuck in. (Note to builders...if stainless steel wins...they make UNDERMOUNT SS sinks!)

Stained concrete is my choice for the back hall...easy care, easy maintenance...it won't win, but a girl can dream.

Now, about the basement...

I'm voting for a game room. I think it will get more use...and foster better "family together time"--particularly if a pool table is included. Games are social...movie watching is NOT. One talks while playing games. Watching movies? Not so much.

PLEASE folks...think of "together time!" Our favorite vacations took place in spots that didn't have televisions. We were forced to find fun stuff to do!

Posted by: Melanie See at February 26, 2008 8:40 AM

The new choices are great. I think I will change my vote on a few things tomorrow.
I know an exercise room would be nice but you should get some exercise at the lake. Also, walking around a pool table and bending is more exercise than you might think.
Those who are saying no to the home theatre because there are TVs elsewhere in the house are missing the idea of a home theatre with surround sound, recliner seating, popcorn machine, etc. Think of the possibilites on a rainy day at the lake and what you might want to do. I think I'm talking myself into the game room ;-)

Posted by: Nancy at February 26, 2008 9:10 AM

Its another round of voting and it really looks like people want a New York apartment stuck out in the woods. Thats OK. I will continue to vote for the things I've experienced works.

Back Foyer Flooring - This will become a mud room with people coming up from the lake. A stained concrete floor will bear the punishment the best and can be retouched the easiest over the decades.

Man Cave - Do you really want a limited number of people to view the Home Theatre? I would rather put the home theatre (including automated curtains, sound system and jumbo monitor) in the family room and save the basement for a place to send off the younger ones.

Simon beard - Keep it. In a couple years you will look like Norm from that other set of home shows. Just kidding ;-) I would trim it down a bit.

Posted by: Ron at February 26, 2008 9:12 AM

Wow... Most Importantly - get rid of that Grizzly Adams.. you are waaaaayyy to handsome and young to look like that.

I really like the idea of a metal backsplash in a cabin but am not sure that it will work with the oiled bronze fixtures I chose. So perhaps the granite would be best.

I do really think we need the apron sink to work well with the arts and crafts kitchen if that is what actually ends up in the kitchen.

As for the utility flooring.. concrete would make the most sense but the cork is also nice as it would not be as CCCCOOOOLLLLDDDDD on the tootsies when you removed the muddy footwear. Perhaps once again we get some radiant heat throughout on the flooring. HINT HINT HINT

Thanks once again for allowing us to be involved in this process.. soooo much fun to dream and invision what you would do .. even though suggestions are here for us to vote.. still quite a bit involved with decisions, decisions, decisions.. and that ever elusive WHAT IF factor.

Talk to you soon.

Posted by: Stephanie R. at February 26, 2008 9:35 AM

I love the new items that we are voting on. I sure hope the tile backsplash wins out because I think a granite backsplash & counter would just be too much granite. About Simon's beard, it doesn't look very attractive the way it is. Maybe if it was trimmed down it would look better. But if it's all or nothing, I believe nothing is by far better! Happy blogging everyone.

Posted by: Wanda at February 26, 2008 9:45 AM

As to the "man cave," I think so people forget that some of us women like power tools, leather sofa/chairs, and gaming tables (pool and poker!). I did select the entermainment or home theather for the "man cave" but I think you need an area for snacks and drinks.

Posted by: meulitt at February 26, 2008 10:08 AM

I love the fireplace in the great room. My only question is,"How do you secure it to keep someone from breaking into the cabin?"

Posted by: Dan La Fave at February 26, 2008 10:17 AM

Shave the beard. Nuff said there.
Granite backsplash to keep continuity with the granite countertops.
Stained concrete. What could be more efficient in a mud room?
My choices up to now have been to keep the cleaning process to a minimum. IF you've ever previously dug out slimey, moldy old grout then vote for one of the apron sinks.
Don't want to polish any chrome sink fixtures...voting for one of the other choices.
All are beautiful...I just want to spend time outdoors...not cleaning.
Ahh...the man cave...surely the men won't spend their days in the cave with all the gorgeous waterfront available?

Posted by: Rosalie at February 26, 2008 10:49 AM

This is my first time to check out the Blog Cabin. I agree that the stained concrete would be excellent and so easy to clean. Remember that this is a lake home and mud happens! I'm going to use concrete floors in my whole home that I'm having built. We are putting in the floor heat (hint hint) and staining or painting to the look of stone.
The apron sink in the kitchen would give the country feel and look to the home as would a metal back splash that resmembles an old fashioned metal ceiling, which by the way would look good in the kitchen also!
Now for the "man" cave. My men and I would love to have a game room. We can put a home theatre system in any room cause let's face it we have TV's everywhere but a gameroom won't go just anywhere. Games ARE a great way to have family time.

Posted by: Joyce at February 26, 2008 11:09 AM

Virgin blogger so be gentle....Had to go for the oil rubbed bronze faucets; it gives that definite mountain cabin look and feel and will compliment the Granite countertops. Honestly would have liked to have a Copper Apron Kitchen sink but since it wasn't there, chose the Apron...also because of the feel it would give. Needs to NOT be white though. Had to go with the metal backsplash to offset the granite but the rear foyer was calling for stained concrete. Location is awsome and I can't wait to be out on that lake.

Posted by: Joe at February 26, 2008 11:28 AM

Hello All
Have you guys checked out the cabin cam WOW I did not Know that was there? When was that put in? Now we can watch as the cabin is being built in real time!

Thanks Keight for the info I will check that out.
What do you think about the cabin cam?

I agree with the post above: What about some solar panels, solar tube lights, etc. I am also voting for a patio near the lake for entertaining.

Posted by: Chris McKinney at February 26, 2008 11:50 AM

Some of us are complaining that we are losing the cabin feeling with our choices.
For me, when I am in a "house" I want all the amenities I can get, a house can be rustic without being stark!
If you want basic on a lake "pitch a tent".

Back foyer: Let me reiterate here, You are in a lake setting "Think Wet and Muddy" a Mud Room should be a main concern for you, quaint and charming is Not needed folks, if you are lucky enough to win this house you will find that soon after moving in the rear foyer area "will" be a mud room, plan ahead and stop the aggravation before it starts, DIY folks, you know one is needed!

About the sink: If I recall correctly the work station sink is also an undercounter model, you'll wish you had it after time! :)

Carry on my friends keep the blog rolling.

Hi bloggers:

I see another round of voting is here.

1st glad cabincraver is feeling better I have her in my prayers Erika everyday.

Now on to the vote/

~~~ Back Foyer should be stained concrete, do you want to have to clean mud from the grout, really!!!
~~~ Faucets I picked the dark ones look like they belong in a cabin and my crome ones show waterspots the minute you use them. (well I do have a lot of lyme in my well water)

~~~ Sink the one with the work area I agree keeps the mess from the counterspace.
~~~ Man Cave (not a man) I think the game area is only a card area, whats up with that. Excercise depends if my disabled body can use them. So I went with the home theater (more seating please)

~~~ Backsplash I agree granite with granit would ne to much, tile come in so many variations it could be used to set off the granit.
~~~ Simons Beard if it keeps you warm keep it but I voted to shave it, your to handsome to hide it.

I am still hoping for dumb waiter and other items to help the disabled

Still waiting for comments from Ahnend, thought he was to comment last week.

Keep blogging all your great!!!!

Mary from Texas

PS real high winds here last 24 hours, dang my dock turned sideways, first time this year.

Please no for the granite back splash, it just looks 'odd' to me, a good tile pattern would set off the colors in the counter without overdoing the granite color field. And Simon, definitely keep the beard, it would be fitting to have a mountain man building a log cabin by a lake. Of course a few leaves and twigs sticking out of it would add to the look.

Posted by: Sean Lemasters at February 26, 2008 12:41 PM

I am sorry that the stainless steel Double sink did not win the vote. I have one and I love it.

As to the vote in favor of Simon shaving:::Nooooooo. I really like a beard on a man. However, I would trim and shape his a bit.

Posted by: Joyce at February 26, 2008 1:07 PM

I would like to direct a word or two to (Nancy--Feb. 26--9:10 A.M.).
I truly mean no disrespect to you or your ideas of what would be best utilized in the blog cabin--honestly. Your ideas were great for you, and those who agree with you, but please don't try to speak for others, eg. "Those who are saying no to the home theatre because there are TVs elsewhere in the house are missing the idea of a home theatre with surround sound, recliner seating, popcorn machine, etc. Think of the possiblities on a rainy day at the lake that you might like to do..."
I don't think I was missing anything actually, I just have different tastes than you. My favorite way to while away a rainy day regardless of where I am, is to read a good book. I also write some, therefore, spend a lot of time on the internet for researching and entertainment. Rarely do either of us (my husband and I) sit in front of a television anywhere in the house for entertainment. It's merely a tool for keeping up with the world, and to watch the occasional movie most of the time.
So you see, everyone sees things differently.
My husband and I have always watched after our health, so some amount of exercise is important to us. We both also have Degenerative Disk Disease, so we walk 3 miles per day every day of the week. We both are also very active with our 5 dogs, walking them a mile a day as well, and rompimg with them when we can.
That's why we chose the Spa/exercise room with our vote.
Believe me, I don't hold it against you, or anyone else, for the assumptions everyone likes to make about anyone's personal voting choices. I just wish you guys wouldn't be so quick to vocalize them on the blog and make it sound as if the rest of us are ignorant.
My apologises if I've offended you. BTW, I'm partial to lite microwaveable popcorn--much less cleanup.

Posted by: Carol at February 26, 2008 1:49 PM

Thank You Ahmed for preserving the natural landscape/trees. I will be looking forward to seeing your work come to life. The fact that you took the effort to preserve what was there says a lot.
And Thank You to Ted and Darlene for creating this beautiful home for some "Extemely Lucky" person to win and call home. I am certain your work and that of the DIY team will far exceed any and all expectations we might envision for an already incredible design and property.
Wow, the groundbreaking has begun ! Can't wait to see it coming together soon. As for me, and I think quite a few others. This would probably be a little more than a vacation place. There seems to be many like myself who would want this as a fulltime home.
You know, I believe I heard that every single one of the dream homes were sold off to others. But I think there are many who have a completely different thought about this particular cabin. I know I do. This is something much better because it is personal. It involves a part of all of us in some way.
I am truly Thankful to have even a small part in it all.

Posted by: BlognBob at February 26, 2008 1:58 PM

I love this part...now were getting down into it!
And I must say I love bearded men..especially ones that can pull it off and look like a real mountain man...but it just doesn't work for him. He's got a certain type of face that should NOT be bearded!

Posted by: Lynn at February 26, 2008 2:55 PM

I love the idea of stained or stamped concrete (the pattern that looks like slate pavers is my favorite) but not in the 'back' entry. Other than the garage, where it would be a waste, place the stamped, stained concrete throughout the rest of the walk-out basement. That way, in the event of any chance flooding, it is not necessary to rip out and replace any 'finished' flooring, such as carpet or tile.

All my decisions are made taking into consideration that the 'log cabin' is really a full-time home in an up-scale gated community that will be worth at least $250,000 or more, when the value of the lot is taken into consideration. Think long-term and resale value here, fellow bloggers. This is not your grandpa's hunting camp in the deep forest. How well do you think your resale value will hold up if you make the amenities in this home too 'rustic'?

I was concerned about the oil-rubbed bronze faucets being used throughout the home. I thought they were rather dark for any of the baths we voted on last time (I believe Zen won in the master and Elegant for the guest bath). Also I did not think it would go well with dark granite counters and, most likely, backsplash. And I did not think lighter color granite would look as well with the light wood of the Craftsman style cabinets. That was the reason I chose the satin finish nickel faucets. The granite counters were also the reason I voted for the undermount sink.

And I am part of that vast majority who thinks Simon should shave the beard. He photographs much better without it, and we will want to be watching him on camera a lot during the construction shows.

Finally, for all the bloggers who keep talking about solar panels on the roof, please take the time to read the section posted in the blog from 2/14, posted by: Keight at February 22, 2008 12:03 AM (thank you so very much for the info!!!), that includes quoted material from the Lakeshore Estates HOA covenants and restrictions. Solar panels are not permitted without special dispensation from the ACC. Nor are fences that do not meet their approval. Having access to that document may save you a lot of frustration and irritation, because you won't keep asking for something the ACC won't approve.

I know the message boards for the Dream Home at HGTV would have really appreciated having the Covenant document for the DH, but that developer was charging $300 for the info kit. All the experienced MB members kept reminding people that many of their ideas and demands might not be permitted under the HOA Covenant.

There are really some very good and VERY practical ideas floating out on this blog. I am learning a lot from all of you. I have just learned to keep a certain objectivity about some of the choices, or think about them in relation to the community as a whole. Consider checking out the link on the Blog Cabin front page that is halfway down the page on the right under 'Blog Cabin Partners'. It connects you to the Lakeshore Estates website with info on the 2 homes that have already been completed and are up for sale. It may give you a better idea of the framework that Barna Homes needs to work within.

Very surprised granite back splash is ahead. The tile looks so nice. Still think granite backsplash with granite countertop is too much...concrete just might be the way to go in the foyer though...may change my vote here.

Posted by: Cathy P. at February 26, 2008 3:42 PM

I love the oil rubbed bronze faucets. It can look rustic as in a cabin but also elegant in an ornate setting. It just seems to blend in with a larger variety of tastes. Tile in the foyer. Don't think cork would blend in well with the teak flooring. Tile isn't hard to clean if the grout is sealed well. I guess I'm probably the odd ball because I think the granite backsplash would be great if cut in the curved design shown. It would also be much easier to clean. I'd like a gameroom in the man cave with not only a card table but a pool table. Great way to spend a rainy day! Flat screen televisions come in all sizes now and can be incorporated into any room, so why waste this room on a home theatre? I don't want to spend my vacation in front of a t.v. I guess I shouldn't complain though because all my choices have won except for the gas fireplace. This cabin is turning into a dream home as far as my tastes go! Thank you DIY for some great selections. Simon, cut the beard. You are too handsome to hide that face. It makes you look a lot older. Enjoy your youth while you have it.

Posted by: Teresa at February 26, 2008 4:22 PM

Simon, you should have been on the today show today! They had a bearduary club shave off on today's show-today right out in front of the crowd. Probably 20 men got hair & beard makeovers. You would've fit right in on the today's / diy tip segments. Which I love to watch, by the way! Your caption could have been " men shave your facial hair (beards)for the ladies ... they like clean shaven looks " then in caption where the tips are usually written at the bottom: simon would say " but guys: What do I know the bloggers made me do it!" Hey, Simon, really I'm just a kidding! But I am a voter for a shaving!

Posted by: Carrie Miracle at February 26, 2008 4:41 PM

To Susan (Today @ 12:06pm):

I agree regarding the steps leading down from the deck, but not the reasons. If there are children that you are worried about getting hurt or falling in the lake, it is an absolute must to be in the immediate vicinity so that you are available in case of emergency! Small children should never be left alone, especially that close to a lake.

Okay, I am off my soap box for now. That is a touchy subject for me.

Posted by: Sharon in WA at February 26, 2008 5:14 PM

The advantages of a well installed top quality cork floor are considerable. Much softer, warmer and more durable than the rest offered for voting. Careful selection of color can also be quite interesting (texture, graining and color)beyond plain bulletin board look. I think most of your voting public are not aware of these features which go beyond just looking at a picture and making a decision.

WHY A MAN CAVE ?
At times a guy just wants a place of seclusion to call their own. Most often not for lack of love or dismay of family members or others. It is often simply a guy thing. To have one personal domain with guy stuff. Though at times it may be out of the way and obscure from the light of the rest of the world . It is still a place of great refuge for the male beast. A place where the foundation of the Castle stands. The Man Cave is a domain of resolve and rest from the burdens of the job and society outside of the home.
And being a family man of seemingly sound mind and not wishing to be in the dog house no matter how nice it might end up being. I will state that none of the burdens afore mentioned come from within the boundaries of my home.
That is just my take on it ladies. Some may agree , who knows? most may not. But that is me.
Now, if I had a wish list for a Man Cave, I think I may have covered all of my bases. I could use help from my fellow Home Entertainment Ethusiasts.
Bose Surround Sound built ins. With sound dampening.
Tivo. Dvdr. CD. Monster Cables.
"Two" all in one "pre-programmed" universal remotes with a dang locater beacon of some sort. The other for back up. I think some of us know about that.
Electronic HD Big Screen, of course.
Fridge w/ ice maker ,A Soda Dispenser, or Both.
Popcorn Machine
Snack/Soda Bar
Stamped Cement radiant heated floor for easy cleaning and warm feet.
Easy Chairs w/ cup holders.
And one or two sofabeds for sleep-overs. Or late night movie.
Auto dimming switch or better yet, included in the universal remote.
And a Game/Snack table. Not quite so fancy, with kids.
All of this just to catch up with the news once in awhile and for that dark rainy day to watch some shows with the family. DIY deserves only the best Cinematic Effect for viewing too. Again, I guess that is just me.
My Excercise would be rowing , bicycle and walking paths in an absolutely beautiful environment. Again, Just me.

Hello, again, everyone! It sure will be great to see the cabin cam shot in the morning. It is great to, finally, be able to see the groundbreaking. In the mean time, North Dakota is trying to warm up, but I guess, to many, 40 degrees isn't warm and Simon would need his beard for a few more months. I say shave it--!! You never know what you might find hiding in there! (lol)

This round of choices fascinates me, due to the log cabin exterior and the high end interior. But, no one says a "blog" cabin has to be rustic. As for myself, I would just want a house that could become a wonderful home. I, also, believe it should be left to the individual new winner/owner of this cabin to put in any and all necessary changes and equipment, as to their personal choice and need. Now, before I get people arguing the point, I, also, am an ongoing cancer patient with physical handicaps due to a kidney disease and a liver disease. My children have inherited the kidney disease, as well. But, probably, to the amazement of many, I would rather have to customize my own environment, myself. I know what I need and what has worked the best in the past.

I agree that the "back foyer" area and the wash room should be reconfigured with the "back foyer" entrance closed off and made into a functional half bath. (How many times is a person outside or just coming home and the kids are calling out their reservations, as to which bathroom they get?) Why track sand/dirt throughout the home's interior? The debris would only shorten the lifespan of the finishing touches! The "back foyer" entrance door could be moved to the "now" washroom and that space could, easily, become a washroom/mudroom combination with very attractive storage and complimentary cabinetry to make it all tie in with the kitchen decor.

I would love for you to post a blueprint of the basement. I, also, agree, wholeheartedly, that the tv should be upstairs, so as to make the best use of the wonderful view.

Sorry, I got a little long tonight, but it has been one of those days! It, definitely, was a good change of pace to be able to vote on the new features.

Goodnight and blog on! My sincerest wishes to cabincraver and daughter. Your "updates" should keep everyone in touch with reality. It happened to me and it could happen to you!! Don't ever take anything or anyone for granted, it could all be gone tomorrow!

Goodnight!

I'm curious as to why solar roof tiles weren't an option since this is supposed to be a green house. Solar tiles embedded into the roof structure and using solar energy systems for the main electric supply, heating, and water heating would be the the most efficient, using very little electricity from the power company. If the tiles were too expensive, solar panels like Heliocol's could have been used with instant hot water heaters, etc. HGTV could set a great example for the people like me, who simply don't know how to hook up solar panels to my existing system for efficiency, and don't know how it's used. P.S. Shave as soon as it gets warm, you are too cute for critter to grow on your face.

Sweet choices! Hard to go wrong on this round. Hubby and I are doing this together so of course we have a few "disagreements" lol in our choices. We both love the man cave choice as a movie getaway. Presently we have WAY too many t.v's in our home and this would be wonderful to have a well done dedicated place for movies and t.v viewing. We both agree NO OTHER t.v's in the home. Who would need them with all the wonderful outdoor pleasures to enjoy? The granite backsplash just makes sense with the granite counter tops. We like the concrete flooring for the back entrance but other than that we 'go with the flow' of the rest of ya'll.

OK.. I think Simon should keep the beard. It gives him that Al Borland look, all he needs now is that flannel shirt.... He's looking like "A Good Ole Country Boy"

Posted by: Nomad1600 at February 27, 2008 7:10 AM

I know that I am probably not in the majority, but I really hate the idea of a "Home Theater"... In my household, as in many the TV addicts are going to be down in the basement watching whatever comes on 24/7. I would rather keep them more upstairs where the other family members are either reading, cooking, or just enjoying the fireplace.

A game room that is a big card table doesn't make sense either. Just use the dinning table. Now if it had a pool table, that would be different.

A gym would be a better idea for people to use year round. (Most) Everyone needs more exercise, but not all enjoy doing it out in public. It could also have storage for outdoor items like fishing rods, etc...

A choice not given could be a nice home office. I realize most of you still think of this as a real cabin, but really it is a home. Wouldn't be popular. I get it.

Lastly, maybe it would have been best to leave this area unfinished. Well, not unfinished, it should have nice walls and floor, but unotherwise a blank slate for the new owners to use as their prefernce warrents.

Every voting session has ended with whatever was in front winning in the end. So I guess a home theater is what will be in the cabin. :-(

That being said, I'll still be more than happy to win this beautiful home!

It is a very exciting process.

One last item. Stained concerte looks beautiful and has no grout to keep clean. Just sharing.;-)

Posted by: Jeanette at February 27, 2008 9:44 AM

Simon should do what he wants with his beard. I like the way he looks either way.
I have oil rubbed bronze fixtures and love them, they are easy to keep looking good, don't need polished and look great with granite.
Is the man cave area big enough for a pool table?
Tile in the mud room is not the best choice, I have tile and it is hard to keep clean, the concrete would be a better choice.
For all the bloggers that have to write a book, I don't have time to read it and suspect I am not the only one.

Posted by: Lisa at February 27, 2008 10:15 AM

Wow, so many choices! First of all I believe it's time for Simon's beard to go. I'm retired military and beards just rub me the wrong way. (Cute huh?) The bathroom fixtures should be oil rubbed bronze, and the kitchen sink should be the sink with work surface. These sinks have a lot more uses than the double sink. As for the kitchen backsplash, I chose the tile. We've already picked the granite for the counter and I personnaly think having granite for the backsplash would be too much. As for the flooring in the foyer, I picked the tile because tile can be cleaned easier and it makes the room brighter. Of course for the man cave, I chose the home theater. I get my excercise walking and really enjoy a nice private area to watch TV and listen to music. That's my two cents worth for this time. Now try to convince me otherwise. I believe there are going to be a lot of comments on the beard.

Posted by: Donald Heerdt at February 27, 2008 12:57 PM

Hello Bloggers.

I just voted and I see the choice for tile backsplash is trying to catch up with the granite choice. Like I siad tile makes more sense. Tile can be use to offset the granite and even pick up colors from the granite (Learned that from watching DIY's kitchen make overs) See you can teach an old dog new tricks.

Next the sink undermount is winning, but why not the choice of the undermount with the workspace. Do you really want to do work on granite.

Come concrete for rear foyer would hold up to all the mud and dirt being drug in from the lake.

I couldn't get the cabin cam to work guess thats because I live in the boonies and only can get dialup.

Keep Blogging

Simon, from a fellow bearded man, if YOU like it, then KEEP it. It ceratinly adds to your woodsman in the cabin image.

Posted by: Frank at February 27, 2008 1:39 PM

Is there a blueprint of the basement that we can see? It is hard to imagine what might go best in a "man room" when you don't know where it is in the scheme of things. Thanks,

You will need to go back through this blog thread to discover all the reasons why solar isn't an option here. In a nutshell the Covenants and Regulations of Lakeview Estates appear to forbid or make it almost impractical to have solar. Also the cost is very high, the return minimal and the efficiency dubious in this location. However, in another place it would certainly be an option.

Posted by: Warren at February 27, 2008 4:50 PM

I love the location and can't wait to see the cabin go up. I'm really liking what everyone is picking; they're showing really good taste (just like mine ha ha ha)! The beard must go!

Wow! Hard choices to make but how cool is it that we get to make the choices at all. You are right , this "aint your grandpa's cabin" I would take this brand of roughing it any day of the week! Mabe with a little luck I will get the opportunity :-)

I am not one to get into these discussions, but I would like to add a note about safety. If the rear foyer is supposed to be used by people coming in from the lake (or any other wet persuit), then the cork is the best choice for the flooring. I have tile floors at my home's rear entrance and they are VERY slippery when wet. Since the concrete appears to be polished, I would guess that it would also be slick. I LOVE the cabin choices and changes. So keep up the good work. This is really exciting!!

Posted by: DebbieB at February 27, 2008 7:49 PM

Please add an abstain to the beard question. The young man should be able to make his own personal grooming decisions.

I live in NYC, my wife used to worry about becoming a crime victim, now she worries about being a terrorist attack victim. We do not worry about severe storms or floods.

Today I heard about a pre-cast concrete safety room that is delivered on site and bolted onto your slab or garage floor. Estimated cost was $6,000. When you move you can unbolt it and take it with you, shipping is extra. How expensive is it to build a tornado resistant room? Are such rooms recommended for the Watts Bar Lake area?

Re :Tankless water heaters, Please read Darlene's post on Feb 25 11:41 am.
I was all for them with reading the many many posts requesting them. Until I read about her personal experience with installing 2 of them. Thank You Darlene for your information. It nice to know now.
There was a comment made previously about Geothermal cooling and heating. Perhaps there is a possibility of implementing and underground heating and cooling system to assist with lowering energy use and costs.
Don't forget a wood splitting area for the fireplace. Perhaps a custom log splitter of some type could be devised.
Want to get down off the deck ? How about a zip line ? Hey, you can get down pretty quick !

Hello fellow Bloggers
I hope everyone is loving this as much as I am and that cabincraver2008 is continuing to do better.
I saw the cabin cam last night when I check in to read the new blogs! Isn't it great that they was breaking ground on the 6th of Feb. and we had no idea. Everything has been moving along so well but I feel now it is going full speed ahead! My granddaughter and I have always (she is 5) sit and made up stories to tell each other, today hers was about fishing in the lake at the cabin!
It was so sweet, I was so touch by the details of her story from coming out of the cabin on to the porch and seeing the sun come up. She described what she saw in her minds eye as we left the cabin and made our way down to the lake.
I would just like to thank DIY for the memories they are helping me and my granddaughter make now. This to me is what life is all about thanking God, loving, sharing and remembering each day.
Happy Blogging

Ahmed,

Nice to hear from you and that things are actually underway vs. our 'virtual' build.

I'm hoping for some 'green' touches from you, as in Green Thumb! Keight was kind enough to post more rules/reg's and I noted that berms and/or rock can be used and are encouraged by the association. I haven't posted this thought in a while. With the grade of the lot, how about some sort of berm/hillock type deal with a water feature running down it..like a small creek, mini waterfalls and some low maint. grasses/shrubs...all within earshot and/or viewable from the deck and any outdoor patio. The sound and view (yeah, yeah - I know we HAVE the lake to vies...but it IS a dream cabin/HOME and this is MY dream...don't wake me now...I'll get a job tomorrow Mom)...anyway, I digress...so, this could be supplied with that water we're collecting from that gal durn tin roof. Filter it (cuz we don't want to kill my Koi's in the lil' pond at the bottom end), reciculate it and supply the birdies and local critters with agua if when it gets dry out (I know, THEY have the lake too)..it might be a good draw for birds, butterflies, dragonflies, etc.

Good luck on tackling the building part, I'm sure the landscaping will be spectacular though since that's your gig.

P.S. A water element for a wall inside...check this guy out www.MetalWaterfallGallery.com or something like it from a local crafty person.

P.P.S. Chris, Bro keep the beard! The hot weather will make ya rethink it later on your own. Just get these DIY folks ta renumerate ya enough ta get the scoot ta go along with the beard! I'd be hard pressed to think of nicer country ta putt around on a big ol' H-D. Just watch out for the Po-leece...and the cages, complete with make-up applyin', cell phone talkin', map readin', sandwich eatin', CD changin' all while s'posta be drivin' space cadets behind the wheel.

Posted by: Kim Mc at February 28, 2008 5:20 AM

Oh, and BTW...c'mon you granite grinders, give it a rest! Isn't there such a thing as too MUCH granite? Take a gander at the pict' of the tile, or even the metal...I'd prefer the tile, but anything but more granite. Live a little, have some contrast. Ya don't want that kitchen looking like a mausoleum now, do ya?
Just my humble opinion.

Posted by: Kim Mc at February 28, 2008 5:26 AM

Hi Mary from Texas, and fellow bloggers too:
How 'bout combining that undermount sink with those grooves cut into the granite top, like we saw on one of the counter choices?

Can that be done with the granite? Can it be grooved, sealed and used like that (and as a work area) without getting stained?

Posted by: Kim Mc at February 28, 2008 5:33 AM

Ahh, sorry Simon, make my P.S. (or P.P.S. -which) regarding Chris' beard chaulked up to I should read/retain better ;)

Posted by: Kim Mc at February 28, 2008 5:44 AM

This is my first post here. This is to be a log home. The voting question about the kitchen backsplash raises a question to me. Will the kitchen sink back up to an exterior wall? Or to an interior sheetrock wall? Or an interior log wall?

Log walls move with the change in moisture content of the logs. Any backsplash of any material fastened to the counter and the wall will be pulled apart by the log movement. Not having the context o the question, like for this example, could end up with a disastrous design.

Posted by: Brad at February 28, 2008 6:34 AM

I vote to shave it. To me he is very sexxy without it and if you have ever watched The Notebook he looks so much like Noah in the movie with the beard. It's a must see he builds the love of his life a house need I say more. I love the cabin cam such a neat idea. I am going to Tennessee this weekend and wish I could go to the site of hopefully my future cabin. I really think that granite backsplash will be to much and would really love the concrete flooring, I watch alot of HGTV and DIY but I have never seen a floor like that before.

Posted by: Mitzi at February 28, 2008 7:16 AM

I also voted on the gameroom. Who would not love to shoot a game of pool with their hubby in the man cave and maybe electronic dart board oh and yes a bar should be a must to store our cold beverages. I have an idea for the next blog cabin. If I do not win this thing I think it would be fun to vote on the next cabin and all the features, then pick a winner (me) lol to have the cabin built on their land. I would def use the 2008 cabin for vacation home alot but have always wanted my own to live in. We just started cattle farming and it is going really good but it would be so much better to have a cabin on our farm. Yes I know I live in a fantasy world but who really doesn't.

Posted by: Mitzi at February 28, 2008 7:50 AM

I have a suggestion for NEXT year--should DIY be so generous as to do this again.

Jeannete:" A game room that is a big card table doesn't make sense either. Just use the dinning table. Now if it had a pool table, that would be different."

Jeannete was clearly keying in on the PICTURE of the card table...but DIY has never stated that the game room will have a card table, not a pool table. I know the pictures all say that they are merely representative, and may not reflect final finishes...but I'm not certain folks "get" that. Is there any way DIY can have the pictures more closely represent what you think you'll have as final finishes? You can still have the caveat...but then the voters who don't blog will be making a (somewhat) more informed choice.

Just a suggestion!

Posted by: Melanie See at February 28, 2008 8:39 AM

First off, I just wanted to say I love this site!

I also want to say that I love the choices that are give for the cabin, good choices!

I also want to make a comment about the granite on granite situation for the counter and backsplash. I think that might be a little much, so why couldn't you do a backsplash that had both tile and granite in it? Put little pieces of granite mixed in with a tile backsplash, I think that would tie it together and look pretty darn good!
Simon, you look a lot better without the beard! You have nothing to hide under there! But hey, it is your face, and if you like all that itchyness on your face go for it!

Posted by: Cari at February 28, 2008 10:14 AM

Regarding the tile backsplash: Could be granite "tile"? I really, really hate cleaning grouting.:-(
Tiled mud room could be very slippery. I know nothing about cork flooring so need to do my homework. Went for the concrete as it appeared to be the best choice of this category.
Cannot wait to see the next categories and the terrific finished cabin.
Bloggers you are so informed...thanks for all the great information!
Hoorah for Ahmed keeping the plants that can be saved!
Hang in there Cabincraver...hope you are feeling much better.

Loved last year's blog cabin, what a treasure for the winners! This year's cabin is even more amazing with its lake front, garage, man cave, bathrooms in each bedroom, and so on... amazing! Thank you DIY and all contributors for this fun diversion.

About the backsplash, I have seen many kitchens in which the countertops and backsplash were all granite and it looks beautiful.

Please fellow bloggers will you consider the stainless apron sink? It gives the best of both worlds: easy maintenance, and less water damage to lower cabinet fronts.

Posted by: Jan at February 28, 2008 3:00 PM

I do rather like the fireplace stones on the main page picture of a fireplace ,with the title Designing a Cabin Online. Do you think we might be able to pick the type of stone for the firelplace ? That would be fun. Pre-approved by the ACC of course.

Posted by: BlognBob at February 28, 2008 6:52 PM

I think you missed an option on the kitchen backlash, Try bronze mirror. It makes the kitchen pop. It's an incredible look, and no, the maintenance isn't any more or different. I might suggest making the kitchen sink match the counter top color, blends much better. The white sticks out like a sore thumb.

I have to say that I am working from my "Woman Cave" right now. As a working woman, I need a getaway too. My hubby and I both have one. We are lucky! The rest of the house is "ours" and occasionally we share our caves!!! Alone time is a good thing! This cabin is going to be beautiful. Love watching the cam.

Still going for that concrete foyer. Good for lake front.
Have fun bloggers!!!

Feel better everyday Cabincraver!!!

Hi! This is my very first blog! I think the oiled bronze would look great especially with the apron sink. An apron sink style would be unique and compliment the granite counter tops and backsplash. I am torn between the tile and stained concrete floor. The tile looks beautiful but I think it might be a bit harder to maintain. The man cave should definitly be a spa/excercise room and Simon, please, stop hiding that handsome face behind all of that hair! It is every man's right to grow shaggy facial hair, but what about the ladies' right to see really hot guys unhindered? I look forward to seeing this cabin shape up!

Posted by: Missy at February 28, 2008 10:22 PM

Sorry, but the beard has to go!

I really don't like the black toned bath fixtures. I have always preferred bright bathrooms and it seems black fitures would be out of place.

I enjoy the construction pictures. nice fratures.

Posted by: Carl Bailey at February 28, 2008 10:39 PM

Hey, great idea with the new item to vote on. Simon shave it. You have way to much to cover up! I like the man cave idea. If the weather does not permit a person to enjoy all that there is outside then he can relaxe with friends or family. Also the metal roof is the best idea, have you ever heard the rain on one. Heaven! I like that you are putting more into the master bath. I myself get clausterphobic and enjoy room. To be able to sit on the porch and enjoy all the sounds and smells will be great. Undercounter sink is the best because of cleanup. Am leaning toward tile floor, but still thinking about the stained concrete. Well cant wait to see more of this come to reality. This is my first blog and its exciting to think that my opinion counts! Have a great day everyone. Cheri

Hi Fellow Bloggers,
Can someone help clarify the location of the rear foyer? I realize how stupid that sounds ,but Iam confused. the picture of the foyer looks like a front entry or main entrance.Fellow bloggers keep blogging about a mud-room in it's place. So where is it? What prompted this silly question is the differance in our regional locations. In Maine I would have a frappe, in St.Louis it would be called a malt. I drink soda, others might have a pop. So is it the front or the back entry way? The picture of the foyer flooring looks to me like a front entrance. I know the pictures of our choices just represent the style of flooring.Could the pictures of the foyer be that deceiving.I think of a mud-room being at the back of the cabin. Please help. Thanks from dummy

Posted by: sammie at February 29, 2008 12:49 AM

Geeze Melanie,

If you are going to quote me, then please read my ENTIRE post where I SAY, a pool table would be a different story. (Meaning I DO understand that maybe something else will be in the game room and not JUST a card table.)

And if you don't want to read my whole post, then could you please at least spell my name correctly. It is Jeanette, not Jeannete

Posted by: Jeanette at February 29, 2008 8:04 AM

Love the cabin choices. I agree w/Ruthie 2/25 comment about the sink choice.. I think being on a lake, one might need a work surface for cleaning all the fish that will be caught, or anything else for that matter.

A home theatre might be a waste of time, one can always watch movies upstairs. Not everyone is a big movie buff-think about how much time one would spend in it, your in nature and on a lake. A game room would make more sense with a pool table, air hockey, some electric games, etc.

I'm sure in the end everything will come together wonderfully, just like the first one. In the meantime I'll be watching the progress and voting.

Thanks DIY

Posted by: kat at February 29, 2008 9:01 AM

I see that the overwhelming majority want the undermount kitchen sink. The sink with work surface is also undermount and makes more sense with a built in drain board function. Less mess on the granite counter. Even though Granite is a rock, the polished surface can still get messed up easier than most people think.

Things to consider.

Good Day Bloggers!

Some of us don't think that solar penels will work (due to the trees I'm sure) and some say it would need approval by the ACC, well, solar can be made to fit almost anywhere and we don't know that the ACC will refuse it do we, I haven't seen anywhere that they have been asked let alone refused it!
If DIY had advanced knowledge that they (ACC) would NOT allow solar power (in any form) then they dropped the ball on picking a site, if it's truelly not allowed let's hope they put more thought into any future locations!

I really think that whomever wins the cabin would appreciate the "work-surface under counter sink" much more than the straight under-counter sink, please give this some deeper thought when you vote!

Mud Room folks, "MUD ROOM", concrete is the best option for the back foyer, I'll say it again, this area "will be" a mud room!
Just "think" about it y'all!

Granite on granite is fine with me but I did like the suggestion of the tile backsplash with pieces of the same granite mixed in, sounds good!

O.K., enough for today, everyone stay safe and enjoy your day!

Posted by: D.J. Smith Jr. at February 29, 2008 11:36 AM

I am really enjoying this bog experience. I appreciate that our suggestions are taken seriously and when appropriate changes have been made. This is really cool. I think that the granite on granite will be too much. I think the tile or bead board would be better option for the Arts & Crafts style. I would be glad to win this cabin no matter what ends up inside. As far as the beard vote. I like well kept and trimmed beards on men but he is awefully cute with out it also. If you keep the beard please trim it to clean up the look. Thanks for letting me give my two cents.

Hello Everyone.

Hey I am a first time Blogger but I would like to say that I chose the undersink with the work area because I like to get work space anywhere I can. I am a mother of 3 girls and we NEED work space. I also chose the nickel plated sink fixtures because the chrome is too shiny for a log cabin home by the lake and the black was too dingy looking in the showroom. I chose stained cement because it looks really good in a foyer and is easy to clean and lasts forever. It is rustic yet looks great and is easy to maintain. NO GROUT either...which to me is a Bonus. I would love to win this home for me and my family so Yall Watchout....hehe..
God bless and I will be back soon.

Posted by: monica driver at February 29, 2008 2:39 PM

From the photo cam it doses not look like you are going with basement that you said would replace the crawl space. Unless you are going to have concrete wall, with would make a need for a lot of back fill and change the site look.

Posted by: Charles Trimble at February 29, 2008 2:45 PM

For the folks out there that are voting on the kitchen fixtures I see there is a huge gathering of the ones voting for the Oil Rubbed Bronze, just remember that when voting for the sink. An Under mount sink in stainless with the ORB would look good but the Farmers sink is also under mount but in china and might look more appealing than mixing the different metals.

Thank you Keight for the info posted on the 25th...found the Lakefront Estate info with the entire development and home site map. This confirmed my suspicions that this is an upscale gated community...this is more like a lakefront log home vs a "cabin" for sure. If my memory can be trusted, the lots begin around $160,000 and are mostly around an acre in size. It was nice to see two of the homes already being built.

I really have a better feel for the entire area now, and with the cam pictures available, don't need to view a plat. My questions have been answered, yeah!

Thanks again, not sure why I didn't find it when I looked weeks ago...

Also, my vote has been swayed to the stained concrete, much easier to care for in a high-traffic area, but should this win, please no large squares like the pic shows...not very attractive to these eyes anyway.

Posted by: Cathy P. at February 29, 2008 3:30 PM

The apron sink is also an undercounter sink and the apron will look much better in the arts and crafts kitchen. It has more character.

Posted by: Mary at February 29, 2008 5:10 PM

Well, I have to agree with many of the bloggers who say sorry Simon, its time to lose the beard! What a cute guy behind all that ugly fuzz! You look so much younger without it and absolutely adorable, sort of Tom Brady like but without the cocky attitude.

This is great fun but please vote for something other than granite for the backsplash! I really like the tile and as someone else said, too much granite makes it look like a mausaleum (sp?).

Posted by: Candy at February 29, 2008 5:19 PM

Please make the cabin handicap accessable, wide doors and large bathrooms for wheelchairs. Enough room for a wheelchairs to move aroung without hitting any thing.

OK, I have been swayed a little. I still don't think that granite countertops and tile backsplash would look right together in any way, but maybe a little decorative metal work behind the stove would be nice, and break up the granite on granite look. I still push for the apron sink and bronze faucet!

Hi Fellow Bloggers,

Could y'all discuss (as in, enlighten me) re erosion control from the house to the lake?

Ahmed, what is the degree of slope?

What is the lakeside landscaping like on finished houses?

Thanks,

Most of the choices I voted for in this round didn't win. (Thank god Simon's beard goes). I've been choosing what I feel to be the most rustic, cabin-like additions for each round. I voted for the stained concrete because I thought It added a touch of earthiness and warmth. The floor tiles seem to be so uniform, like a machine spit them out. Request: could we have the tiles done so that they look more natural, perhaps like stones with uneven edges fitted together like puzzles.

Posted by: Tim G at March 1, 2008 4:08 AM

Hello to all,
Thanks so much for the cabin cam! Am I correct on the orientation of the cabin to the site, ie., front faces west and back faces east across the lake? The back porch will be a great spot for the early risers to watch the sun come up. When landscaping, it might be good plant some trees that will shade the front of the cabin(eventually) from the hot summer sun.

I am really hoping that concrete will eventually win out for the mudroom - it is/can be attractive and so durable.

Onward and upward, fellow bloggers!

Posted by: Tingoat at March 1, 2008 7:34 AM

Compromise for Simon. clip the beard and cut the hair. Not sure why you would want to hide that nice square, manly jaw, but if you want a beard, at least keep it well groomed.

The foyer the floor is bing voted for is in the back where all the mud and dirt will come in thats why I voted for concret floor.

I agrre about the sink with the workspace save the granite countertop this sink is an undermount so lets vote for that.

Still hoping the tile backsplach will catch up, lets enance the granit no carry it up the wall.

The rubbed oil bronze fixture will look great in a cabin and with the granite.

Simon it is a free country so do what you want with the bread even though I think you look better without it.

Have a great weekend bloggers and DIY team

Appears that tile is winning in the mud room.
Since I'm voting for the stained concrete each time...I'm curious...
What is the tile made of?
Granite, slate, ceramic?
Remember fellow bloggers...you will have to clean the grout...and it is a "mud room"...
Again...I wouldn't want to spend much of my time cleaning this beautiful home.
I've never won anything..but I'm having a lot of fun dreaming and choosing what I'd like in my cabin.
The winner will have a wonderful place to live.
Maybe they can get a cleaning service.

Sure hope Kevin shaves off that beard. Without it, he could be a great model; not to be mean, but when I first saw the pic of him WITH the beard, I thought it was a woman with a fake beard glued on as a joke. He is a hunk without the fuzz, looks secure in his gender, go for the working model look! OR ask your Mom, she will know!!
On to the voting: I have tile flooring in my bathrooms, and grout is not fun to clean, stained concrete is a breeze, indestructable,, remember, this is going to be in an entrance area where things are dropped,wet,leafy,tree-sappy shoes will be removed. Whomever votes for tile either has never had to clean it on their hands and knees, or is independently wealthy and can afford to have somebody ELSE clean it that way!!
Also remember when you vote for the sinks, if it is well water, there will be major staining, but stainless will clean much easier; also there has been no mention of what types of water/refuse system out in the boonies there. If there is well water, is there a softening system, is there a septic field or sewer? If septic, tree roots are the bane of a homeowner in that setting, as I know from personal experience. I now live with sewer, but grew up with septic, much maintainence with that, must be so careful with refuse and tile fields. I see some nice big trees in the photos, with nice big roots.. just a thought...
For the people that are asking for all the luxuries, the extras:buy them yourself when you get the place, huh? A mini fridge is less than $100, a generator $2-300! I would be so grateful for the top of the line fixtures that are being provided already! To blognbob: To even SUGGEST moving the laundry room to the basement, for any reason, would get you a flogging from any person that actually has to DO the laundry! That is tantamount to removing ALL REMOTES for the electronics, a garage, or reading material in the bathroom, in a man's home! If there is no clothes chute to that laundry area, and no paid help to haul the laundry back up those stairs, I know of no woman on the planet that would prefer a larger kitchen to clean, versus a basement laundry room!
ALl of the ideas are helpful with everybody's life experiences to make us ponder the choices. Thanks for all your input everybody!

Hello again!! I just read about the tile floors being slippery when wet. I thought about that when voting but with all the area to walk around before getting to the foyer I think most of the water will be off your shoes. o far it looks like everyone is in agrement with the choices I made earlier. See you next time.

Simon, I think you look very handsome with or without your beard, but honestly the clean shaven look seems to suit you better.
The cabin is going to be gorgeous and what a beautiful location! I chose the oiled bronze faucet for the bathroom because of the rustic feel it gave me, same with the bead back splash. The under the counter sink looks as if it would fit right into the kitchen I'm envisioning.
Definitely the stained concrete for the rear foyer!
It'd be a great place to road block small, large wet &/or muddy humans and furry animals from racing thru the house.

Have a great day!

Concrete in the back entry would look great and be very functional. Don't really like the big square design in the sample pic but there are all kinds of concrete stamps and designs that may work. What about a stamp that resembles stone?

Posted by: Lori at March 1, 2008 11:13 PM

Well - I must say, the option of an under counter sink is just beautiful. (and it looks easy to keep clean).
You guys are doing a great job with the options on this house. Keep up the good work.

Hello,
This is my first time at blogging (spell?), so I'm not sure if anybody will read this. I followed the show last year, entered the contest, didn't win; but I've got the bug to build my own cabin somewhere in the Blue Ridge or Smokies. I'm wondering whether the twin contractors would be interested in undertaking the job for me. I await hearing from you.
Regards,
Tom

I think he looks better without the beard, but being from PA where it is 3 degrees out, I can understand the need for warmth!
I think that the tile flooring instead of the cement offers a more warm and inviting look and feel.

Hello everyone, I am having a very hard time
with the double undercounter sink, as it is enamel.

I have had both enamel & stainless steel sinks
and the SSS WINS everytime!

Enamel is atrousous to keep clean not to mention
chipping of enamel etc.

Also I voted for the nickel faucets, as for the bronze I can see it turning & perhaps peeling?

NO GRANITE back splash PLEASE!

Sure hope the counter tops are QUARTZ!
My understanding is that quartz is more durable
& upkeep is minimal compared to granite!

As mentioned earlier on this blog, once granite
chips, u have to replace the whole thing!

Hi all, looks like stained concrete and tiled back-splash are gaining a little...last week to vote...come on, let's pass the others!

Anyone know how they will create the walk out basement- digging it out later, back-fill what is going up now? We have a walk-out and the concrete was poured for the basement floor after the basement walls went up but we dug into the hill first. The cam pictures make it look all on ground level...?

Wow it is so nice to see the Foundation on its way ! I am excited. I am so Thankful that a basement was even considered.
As for my suggestions, I simply like to throw out as many ideas as might pop into my noggin. I felt perhaps that is what this blog was about . And I am in no way unthankful for every single thing that DIY has and is putting into this home . I truly find is amazing they are doing this to begin with. For me , it is all about having fun.
Hello I ,Post March 1 1:10 pm. Nice to hear from you. Guess ,I am in for a flogging eh? (Chuckling to myself). That's ok. Something new I guess. Actually , I do all the laundry and almost all of the cooking in our home because my wife is and my daughter are disabled. I was pushing for a laundry chute too if the elevator was not feesible. And I like a big kitchen actually. Room to move around abit. But , that's me ! Taking away the remote though? That is like cutting off a guys hand. Actually, I was content with an empty basement to be honest. I do like to throw out as many "suggestions" as possible to gather ideas from others on what to really push for. Thank You to everyone for some really awesome ideas.

Hi all, keep the votes coming for the stained concrete rear foyer and the tile back-splash! We are gaining on 'em. Last week for this round I think.

Hey, wake up everybody. even on vacation we need somewhere to work out, keep in shape. You can put a big tv in any of the rooms, but not an excercise spa. that's all the theater room is, another place to watch the more draining tv.

Re: the color choice of the faucets

I called Kohler, and the model shown is "Devonshire", which I love! Although Kohler calls it part of their Old World line, it just seems to fit the house.

This line of fixtures (kitchen & bath) is offered in the following choices:

"Brazen Bronze"
http://www.us.kohler.com/onlinecatalog/newproducts_detail.jsp?section=2&aid=1142519010010

There is supposed to be a "Brushed Bronze", which I didn't find.

I did find this, and Devonshire comes in a selection of nickels and chromes - look under Warm Colors:

http://www.us.kohler.com/onlinecatalog/colorpalette.jsp?section=2&nsection=2&nsubsection=1&nitem=link1#tab--0__expanded--bath-container2

Please use your imaginations. I agree the oil-rubbed bronze is too dark *unless* there is going to be dark wood, tile, whatever. It would make a stunning accent color, if we can persuade the interior dec team to find an Arts & Crafts style faucet for the kitchen.

When doing the "Man Cave" why not combine a game area with the theater?

Posted by: Kal at March 3, 2008 7:41 PM

I think its time to bring it down a notch. Bam!! Go with a goatee and mustache now that the weather is changing. Like the choices and made my picks they all seem to be doing good so far. Hope to see more pictures of the site posted.

Posted by: BillJ at March 3, 2008 7:57 PM

Wow! Take a day or two or ten off and things really get poppin'! I really love the "Man Cave" concept, and although I'm not a man, I think I'd be spending a lot of my "down time" with some of the family chillin' in the cave.

I havent't really checked, but I'm still looking for more closets and storage. (I also saw a storm/tornado shelter suggestion that looked good) When you consider that some who might win may want to stay forever, and that others who might win, might bring a whole crew with them, the extra storage/closets make clutter less of a given.

I know some don't think having the garage under the master br is such a great idea, but it looks/sounds cool to me. (I carry my own summer around so the one complaint of the room being too cool would be "cool" with me.)

I can't say I'm enamoured with the faucet choices, or the current "winner" but, once again, whaddaya want for free???

I promise to keep better track of the blogs. Welcome Ahmad! I REALLY like the cam feature! It was super to see the progress you guys made today alone! (Monday March 3rd) Keep up the good work! Be Blessed! lkm

Cabincraver, Good to see you back ! You have a lot of good friends and family.

Posted by: BlognBob at March 4, 2008 12:09 AM

Wow! I just looked at the cam and I see walls but no footings or slab! I have got to go look at the videos again and see what has changed since we built our home!

Posted by: nonnii at March 4, 2008 9:07 AM

Hey, This might have already been suggested. But for the kitchen. I think it would be a great idea for a built in wine fridge! I might be getting ahead of myself and the prodject but I thought I would throw that in there. If it has done been mentioned then I second it!! Other then that the blueprints and layout are AMAZING!! I can't wait to get this cabin rolling! The built in sink with high faucet would look great! P.S. I think Simon should keep his beard. I think it fits in with the wilderness and the building of a long cabin. At least keep it untill it gets warmer!!( I know most women will disagree with me)

Posted by: Raymond Emerick at March 4, 2008 9:13 AM

I do NOT understand, I have posted several times
on this blog and never see my post!

I sure hope people think twice about the kitchen
sink! That double under the counter sink the divider looks too low to wash dishes in.

Again Stainless Steel is the best for sinks!
I am speaking from experience having had had both enamel & stainless steel.

Sure hope the counter top & back splash is QUARTZ NOT GRANITE!

What about peeling & corrosion on the fixtures?

The bronze in my opinion will corrode & peel faster than the brushed nickel!

Thanks DIY for giving us this opportunity to sound off!

Blessings everyone!

The cabin can be outstanding , However, I am a little concerned about security the final floor plan from the road side. Access can be gained into the house from the front porch on one side and people sleeping in the master bedroom may not even hear it. from the road the porch space appears divided lacks continuity. On the back side its wonderful living and shared space.

Perhaps outside and below the Garden window there could be either a wrought iron or wooden planter box for limited light flowers. Or something decorative to keep little ones and possibly us older ones from bumping our noggin when we pass by on that side of the deck.

Posted by: BlognBob at March 4, 2008 3:36 PM

Am soooo excited you are building another log cabin. My husband and I love log cabins and want to build one some day! Of course, I am going to try to win one! Love the choices so far and am looking forward to the finished product! Most of my choices while voting were the winning vote, yeah!

Posted by: Margarete at March 4, 2008 4:36 PM

I'm picking up on your idea BlognBob, and running with it. I think I'd maybe put in some nice shelving underneath that kitchen greenhouse. I'd use it as a place to show off a found bird's nest, and bits of interesting rocks we picked up on our walks, maybe some interesting clay pots, or a few pieces of local outdoor artwork.
(^_^)

Okay, now I see the depth of the basement...lots of backfill for the front I guess. Didn't see it before...must need another eye exam.

Keep those backsplash tile and concrete votes coming!!!

Posted by: Cathy P. at March 4, 2008 5:47 PM

To nonnii at March 4 who blogs
"Wow! I just looked at the cam and I see walls but no footings or slab!"

It's a bit confusing but those 'walls' you see are in fact the basement walls. The slab floor was poured a few days earlier. The basement comes as prefab slabs of concrete with insulation already fused. They lock together to give a dry, insulated basement. Absolutely fantastic! It's a great way to build and it enables us to see the whole process and the layout of the basement. From what I see I think the basement is extending below the rear foyer. This would be great for a dumbwaiter ststyem from the basement to at least the rear foyer to help with heavy items from the garage to the kitchen and maybe beyond.

Posted by: Clive at March 4, 2008 5:59 PM

Just looked at the CabinCam...haven't in a few days.

Interesting concept for the foundation, I hope. I've seen the type of form that has insulation, and it gets bolted together, but still has concrete poured throughout. I've never seen 'pre-fab' sections like that. How they're waterproof, hope some sealer and viqueen(sp) are applied to the outside below grade, hope some draintile and gravel will be installed at base also.

In looking through the pic's, I didn't see a concrete footing poured prior to the installation of those foundation wall units. That's different for me too. Maybe that's just for us in the 'Actic Tundra' of Chicagoland. Just hoping too, that there won't be too much shifting. I assume this is a tried and true building method. We have a lot of clay up here, so homes kind of 'float'.

Also, we tile fans need you metal and beadboard supports to jump ship and help us out!

Posted by: Kim Mc at March 4, 2008 7:20 PM

Trim it. I have seen alot of concrete floors and have yet to see one that was not cracked. just a thought.
