Luxury Items & Hardscaping Among New Voting Features

From the not-even-close blowouts (shaving Simon's beard) to the down-to-the-wire contests (bath fixture finish) - no, I'm not talking about the NCAA Tournament - I'm talking about voting features we need your help choosing.

And the features keep coming: metal roof color (all very handsome), patio design, patio luxury item (heater, speakers or refrigerator), garage storage option and hardscaping material / theme. Early indications are that the patio features are going to be razor-close contests, so vote every day!

Hello Watson, Thanks for the new features to vote on! Have you found a basement floor plan we can view yet?

I would hope we could pick a lighter color roof that will not draw so much heat in the summer and be a better contrast to the darker color logs of the cabin.

Watson have you been to the site and took anymore pictures?

Thank you and DIY team for all that great work you are doing on this great cabin!

I love the new choices that we have to vote on, but I am confused as to why we have a heater for the out door patio feature. Don't we already have an outdoor fireplace according to the design plans. Please DIY, can you explain. Maybe I am confusing myself, but I do hope that the fireplace will still be there.

Posted by: Cindy at March 24, 2008 3:58 PM

OK,

I've thought about that mis-build on the master bedroom and have thought of a possible solution. Since the 2 windows were left out and a door put in their place, how about making the opening larger to accomadate a double door like the one facing the lake. You could then have 3 walls to put your bed on, also recieve the extra light and breezes, and traffic flow in the room would not be hampered. Then the homeowner could decide if they wanted 2 doors for access outside, the one facing the lake deck or the one facing the side deck to enjoy the evening sunsets. Lastly, this would balance with the dining room 2 doors. I can feel those breezes now!! What do ya'all think?

OMG! The cabin is really coming along. And great new feature choices to decide. I hope everyone had a Blessed Easter. Ours was quiet. How are those who have been ill? I am terrible at names, but when I pray for you, God knows who I mean. I had a real difficult time with some of the choices this time [I want them all!], but will try to decide. Blessings to all.

Posted by: DebbieB at March 24, 2008 5:24 PM

WOW!!!! What a difference a week makes in the building of the cabin. It appears that the second floor will not have any logs, rather all roof. Is that correct? It looks like the bedrooms and bathrooms will have a sharp roof line in the room.

I hope that people will vote for a patio heater, remember that it is easy to bring out your drinks, but you can't bring out the heat in the evening. That particular heater is great and really puts out a lot of warmth (you can only put on so many layers).

We have just installed pavers in our yard and driveway, it really doesn't matter how you lay them, they are great anyway.

ps still voting for the pot filler.

Posted by: Jane Turner at March 24, 2008 6:08 PM

I love the circular patio it reminds me of water ripple waves on the lake! I voted for the refrigerator for the patio as well: That way no one is tracking dirt in the house for a drink and you shouldn't have to worry about the kids staying hydrated! If they have drinks on hand they tend to drink more fluids. I like the heater but you can easily get a fire pit table or chimnea for warmth.

Hey Ahmed - great stuff on your, Chris, & Simon's videos !

This year, I'll be on the "blog" getting involved with the interactivity of it all - just like last year I was "glued" to the TV with every new episode (you will have Amy D in some of this year's episodes won't you !???)

Good luck with this project - it looks awesome - with all your all's energy and expertise, how could it go wrong !

One idea - if there are some good sized logs still around, take some cross cuts (2-3 inches thick), dry them out of the way of the elements, and use them for the seats of some stools/chairs maybe ??

Later,

OC

PS - RE: Simon's beard - if he's motivated anything like I was - I used to grow one just so when I shaved it, people would say I looked younger (not that either of the twins need that yet !)

Posted by: OC at March 24, 2008 6:13 PM

I forgot to mention the stones to be used in the hard scape. Ahmed mentioned in his video that he was saving the boulders and stones from the excavation to be used in the landscaping. Personally I really love that idea! Hope this voting item wins out, we can always lay down some kind of walkway steps.

Hey everyone, this is what I posted on the chat line, but alas, no one was there. Must be watching DIY!! Love you guys...this is what I said.

Hi to anyone out there! Love the new choices! I love the swrilly pattern of a patio, think it brings a little jazz to the outdoors! Also love stone outlining flower bed etc. I have that at my home, and it really gives the yard a flair! Speakers or fridge??? Well, I decided to go for the fridge because I would love to hear all of nature sing to me! Music would be nice with a party atmosphere, but plan on having really relaxing parties with chit chat. How do you all feel about it?

This is the first time i have vote for any of the blog cabins and I just love all the things so much it was had to choose a favorite! The metal roof colors are great for the area and I can't wait to see the final pick.
I think that this might be your best Blog Cabin yet.

Posted by: Leanna at March 24, 2008 8:32 PM

The choices for the outside features are great, but where does the porch swing go?

Posted by: Kat at March 24, 2008 9:05 PM

Cool - new stuff! The space heater - can be useful away from the fireplace, like the patio outside the mancave or elsewhere - speakers would be great too but irksome to the neighbors. Only thing there I didn't care for is the outdoor fridge. Patio pavers -Straight or circular (really like that) but not the wave - too nauseating at first take! I like all the roofs but am thinking of what would go best w/the outside stain finish - possiblity the darkest roof of the three. Definately rocks for the hardscape - the other two don't "work" at all! And for the garage - the sports storage center of course! We need space for the kayak paddles & bikes & such - this is a vacation or retirement home after all! Although the work station would be nice for building radio control airplanes - I still like the sports rack the best. Cabin is coming along! I've taken the Superior foundation info & added it to my favorites for future referrence - thanks for all this education.

Getting down to the details...very exciting. Would like to have seen a choice to use synthetic decking materials perhaps on the porch. All the winners look great. Thanks again. This is really fun to be part of.

Posted by: Cheryl at March 24, 2008 9:40 PM

Ahmed,
I hope you might consider putting is a rock wall or more in and around the area. Especially for retaining areas. That would be absolutely beautiful.
Do many evergreens grow around those parts? It would be nice to see a few , but only if they are native to the area.
And perhaps a suggestion for built in water timers.
Can't wait to see you in your element Ahmed !Performing your wonderful works.

Someone had mentioned awhile back about possibly some stained glass windows for the Master Tub and the toilet area. I wanted to plug that back in for any new bloggers.

Hey guys
From what I see from how the voting is going this is going to be a great home. I have been pretty much with the majority of the the voters on what is being put in this cabin. Wondering if you have thought about putting any green features into the design of this cabin. Since it's in the beach area it would be something to think about since most of the country is thinking of saving energy and eco minded

Wow! I love that fan design in the patio! I can see that with the stone hardscape and that dark roof. Good choices!

Yay! New stuff to vote on. I'm with some of you all. I wish we could see these items next to the ones already chosen. Anywho...Love love love this!
Oh how this cabin just has to be mine!!! :o)

Oh and I see we have chat avalible now. Very cool!
Come on people, let's chat.

Country for the metal roof since it would go better with the butternut stain, outdoor fridge for the wine or cold drinks, workshop/tools for the garage since this is a necessity for every man, stone for the natural outdoors look, and fan style for the patio. Straight and circular are seen everywhere. The fan design is more unique and would be really beautiful with greenery bordering the edges. This is going to be a really wonderful cabin!

Posted by: Teresa at March 24, 2008 11:41 PM

Why with all the beautiful COLORS that metal roofing comes in are the only choices for our blog cabin those dull earthtones of gray and brown? I thought we had voted for a metal roof...the examples shown appear very conventional...but not the metal standing seam roof that I think of when a metal roof is mentioned. What gives??????

Posted by: Becky at March 25, 2008 12:21 AM

I am putting my 2 cents in for the fan layout for the patio (off the basement area under the balcony porch on the lakeside).... that way it is flowing down toward the lake... inviting you out into the yard toward the lake

I am also voting for the speakers ... because this will incluce the wiring in to an indoor system that could be used on the patio & the balcony porch... easier done in the building stage.. I will have a frig in the theater room or somewhere in the basement... and can get a heater or have a firepit put in for warmth ...

Would love to have the workshop & the gardening storage...but I went for the workshop... (know we will have a problem getting a storage shed in this community with all their rules...)

These are my opinions and just wanted to explain my reasons for voting the way I am....

All the options were very nice, but the outdoor refrigerator takes the cake. Placing a chaise lounge close to it would certainly be nice for hot summer days. Your beverage of choice would only be an arms length away.

Hello Fellow Bloggers
Just have time to vote and a quite blog before I fly to Houston to spend a week with my son.
Love the metal roof design. I just knew that DIY was going with this type instead of the standard metal roof. Thanks DIY!
I would prefer the speakers installed since we could purchase the other two, but that just my idea. That way the wiring and everything would already be done.
The Circle patio and the stone are just fab.

Posted by: Bog at March 25, 2008 9:28 AM

Wow, what great selections for the cabin. Whatever wins the vote will sure to be a pleaser since they are all winners. Just a thought for the patio item a heater sure would be nice if you are sitting out on the fan patio on a cool, crisp Tennesse fall evening. Thank you DYI!!!

can't wait to move in, looks soooo peaceful, need calm in my life!!!!

Posted by: TINA at March 25, 2008 10:13 AM

I see the circle design is winning. I really think that limits the arrangement one can do on the patio. If something isn't centered on or around the circle, then everything will look off. Like it isn't planned well. Oh well, it will still be graet.
Sorry if someones has mentioned this already, as none of the posts from yesterday are up as I am writing this. I'm probably the only one so picky anyway.
The cabin cam is sure getting exciting though. I have to come see every day now.

Posted by: Jeanette at March 25, 2008 10:24 AM

As to the outdoor heater...it's for the patio, and will put out much more heat than a fireplace. The FIREPLACE is on the porch.

I'm voting for the heater! It'll help extend the outdoor season.

Happy Belated Easter to everyone...I am so amazed at how quickly this cabin changes everyday! :-)
I just voted for our wonderful new features - but, I am surprised that everyone is voting on the lightest of the 3 colors for the roof - I personally, would like to see the darker color with the natural color of the logs - I just think that would be more of a NATURE look for this cabin on the lake! Also, I was reading the blogs and someone had a great point about the circular patio design and setting up your furniture around it - I would really like to see the straight version - but, Any of them will be beautiful I am sure of that! Cant wait to win this cabin! :)

Posted by: Merry :-) G. from Wa at March 25, 2008 11:41 AM

I was just reading some of the other blogs and got to wondering - with all the great things going into this cabin - does anyone know will there be a outdoor type of shower -rinsing station from when you return from the lake?? what kind of path will be from the cabin to the lake?? and can we get a view of the cabin from the lake with this CAM?? I would love to see the other side - is that possible?? I am so excitied about this cabin!

Posted by: Merry :-) G. from Wa at March 25, 2008 11:50 AM

I have a question: Is the patio going to be located on the left or the right end of the basement level? Or will the patio be one big patio on the ground level under the porches linking the whole back of the house and french doors together into one big patio...? I like the circular patio for the fact of centrally placing tables or a firepit with chairs around it. I however love the wavy patio: it's the one that reminds me of water rippled waves on the lake. It's my favorite! I got the names confused yesterday! I love the stones for the lanscaping or bank holds. Stones make for a very relaxing and rustic environment especially on the lake. I hope all of the landscaping will be easy care! I like the blooming trees like the pink cherry willows and dogwoods, the grasses: like pompass, and monkey. They are beautiful swaying in the wind! The wildlife likes coming to them!

Posted by: Carrie Miracle at March 25, 2008 12:13 PM

Love the metal roof and the color will go great with surrounding natural setting. Think the patio heater is better idea then a frig out there. Can't wait til we win this house! It is going to be a great place to retire (when my husband and I finally get the chance)but in the meantime a great getaway! Keep up the great work DIY!

Posted by: Susie at March 25, 2008 12:24 PM

I think the speakers would be too noisy for the neighbors and why not be listening to the sounds of the lake, birds and critters?
I'm not too picky about the roof color. I would like to see them with the color of the logs. That would make a big difference in choosing.
I think the stone hardscape is the best way to go, especially since Ahmed saved some of the rocks from the excavation.
I'm really torn between the choices for storage
in the garage. I think some of all of them might be needed.
Thanks, DIY, for all of the new choice to vote on.

Posted by: Nancy at March 25, 2008 12:29 PM

I voted for the patio heater because the HOA doesn't want noisy things and what's the sense of speakers if you can never turn them up??? I agree with those who stated the tile circles are too complicated a design for the patio...simple is good!! It's a good design for a larger area though. I love the choices for the metal roof. Again, I chose Country for it's simplicity. This cabin is going to be wonderful!!!

Posted by: Jan at March 25, 2008 12:39 PM

I was curious will there be a hot tub involved on the back patio? Just a simple question that will help me make a decision between the heater and the drink cooler. Great job diy looking good out there it is really coming together.
Thanks Wil

Posted by: Wil Webb at March 25, 2008 12:58 PM

Hi, why don't you use the pavers on the patio, to do the walkways or hardscaping? Who would want railroad ties? I am voting for brick........not the color that is shown but something to blend. Wish the roof color choices were lighter, had a feeling the dark exterior color choice would make the house too dark. I am voting for the heater and the workshop. Guys need a workshop.

Posted by: Towny at March 25, 2008 1:00 PM

I just come back to see if the cabincam had updated yet and WOW! That morning sun is glorius! Those builders already have the front porch peak up and some of the roof sheeting. Awesome & Nice work builders. Just gorgeous! I also would like to see some shots of the cabin cam toward sunset!

Posted by: Carrie Miracle at March 25, 2008 1:01 PM

Great choices for the roof design! I prefer the darker Timberwood. It seems that it would blend in with the area a little better. Early voting doesn't put it in the lead though.

I agree with everything else that is in the lead so far. I decided on the garage workshop but with the small size of each feature, it seems that DIY could fit them all in the garage quite nicely. (hint, hint) I'm glad the outdoor fridge is in the lead. I want to listen to nature, not a speaker system. And the lot doesn't look big enough not to disturb your neighbors with your music.

I'm with the earlier blogger, wasn't there a fireplace outside? Or are we thinking of Blog Cabin 2007? Happy voting everyone! ~Betty~

Posted by: Betty Wilcox at March 25, 2008 1:16 PM

Have not seen any mention yet of a hot tub. This would be so relaxing before sleep - looking out at the lake from the deck.
Also agree with a previous poster as to the circle design - would really look sloppy if accessories not positioned correctly. The fan design is too busy. Would perfer the straight so as not to detract from the beautiful surroundings. Hey a frig outside? UGH, give me the outdoor heater please.

Posted by: Jo at March 25, 2008 1:26 PM

This could be a financial nightmare, like the Dream Homes, depending on how you manage your finances. Be ready to take out a mortgage to pay taxes. The value of the home will be taxed as ordinary income for federal tax purposes. Your state may also tax you.
Suggestion: Keep it low cost, functional, simple and uncluttered (ie.: do not let Linda Woodrum decorate!)
Even better: include a cash prize that will go towards the tax liability.

Posted by: wj at March 25, 2008 1:33 PM

My wife had to have the bronze bathroom fixtures and I have to have the workshop. I am wondering about the tile backsplash with the granite........the example looked good. Wife wanted the heated floors in the bathroom and we are happy with most of the choices. Wife is concerned about how dark the exterior will be with a dark roof.........too dark? What does everyone else think? Think Wife needs to vote.

It's located on the Blog Cabin web page where you vote and post blogs. Check it out.

I know that the stain on the cabin is a lighter color, but on the "green" side of things you should really go with the lightest color of roof to save on cooling the cabin. I have lived in homes with dark and light roofs and it does make a difference.

I see the sheeting is going on the roof that means that it will be in the dry soon for when bad weather hits we can still work and not loose time. To DIY you guy and gals blow my mind at what you do for all of us here in blog land, and I am grateful. All of the criticism and suggestions to put it all in perspective your great once again!!!! I just want to thank you for all of your hard work and since I have been off work with my injury you have given me something to do on my off time thank you. I would really love to meet you sometime and tell you in person. Thanks for keeping me sane while cooped up in this house I am only 31 and too young for this I should be working. Great work Wil Webb

Wow ! The Roof is going on . That is exciting. They must plan on putting that metal down right after the voting on this one.
Well, looks like the mini fridge is coming thru after all ! I think this one is a little more upscale and more universal too. Plus it has wheels so you can move it where you will. Thank You DIY for thinking of everyone.

Thank You Jane, Pot filler above the stove.

I am afraid without comparing, the leading color of roofing might be very close to the same color as the siding. I hope there will be a little difference in color between the two.
Can anyone tell me if you have wild turkey in TN? I am from the NW and have never seen Turkey in the wild. Or fireflys for that fact. I am certain if I did research ,many of my ancestors would be bootleggers from around them parts. So, yes...I know about the other wild turkey.

Hope you had a wonderful Easter Clive ! Talk to you after you read thru all the new blogs.

Was there much flooding in TN with what all the news was talking about?

Posted by: BlognBob at March 25, 2008 4:23 PM

I do enjoy getting to vote on the features for the Blog Cabin. And, to read all the ideas.
I'd go for the outdoor speakers. From learning the hard way, it's best to put the speaker cables in during the beginning. It was a mess at our house. You can always get the heater and fridge later.
Dreaming in Michigan.

Posted by: Kat at March 25, 2008 5:14 PM

Love the new choices, but I am surprised that most people are voting for an outdoor refrigerator. It gets very cold outside, especially since you are up in the mountains. I used to live a couple hours away from there and there is more cool/cold than warm/hot. A patio heater would make the space enjoyable for far more time than having cold drinks for a few months. If cold drinks are a top priority, may I suggest a cooler on wheels. I really don't mean to be sarcastic, but unless you have lived in mountains, you don't realize that as soon as the sun goes down, it gets cool - even in summer. Hope this helps people make what I believe is a wise decision and vote for the patio heater.

Posted by: Cyndy at March 25, 2008 5:53 PM

Hey everyone! I agree with OC. It would be wonderful to use a few left over logs from trees that had to come down for nice benches out toward the lake. GREAT IDEA!

I love the sports holder thingy! I hope I am not doing a lot of work while I am there, I hope I have a canoe or kyack to store! I can store my gardening tools in the garage somewhere!

Love the roof choice. Tin comes in so many colors and shapes and the shapes shown are a nice change from the long standard type of roof.

The temps posted by weather girl (thank you btw!) let me know that a good fridge outside will be very nice and keep people from running in and out every five minutes for a drink. Looks like a lot more warm weather than cold.

Hope all are enjoying the cabin cam. I know I am. Thanks for the videos too! The twins are great!

Take care and hope to see you all in the chat room.

I forgot to mention this. I wanted to make a suggestion about the tile in the foyer. My husband and I just tiled our kitchen floor. We looked at ceramic tiles and we also looked at the porcelain tiles. We finally chose the porcelain because the color goes all the way through the tile. If a ceramic tile chips, only white shows through. The color is only on the top. Hopefully the flooring won’t get chipped, but if it does, the color will blend. Porcelain is also stronger and it is beautiful! We chose the terracotta for our flooring but the bronze would be gorgeous with the wood flooring already chosen for the cabin. So far, I’ve broken a few things on our floor, but the tiles never have!! I haven’t tried bowling balls even though the salesman said it could take it. That’s okay, I’ll take his word for it!

Hi Fellow Bloggers!
WOW, I'm amazed at how much has been built in just the past couple days. Took a break for Easter since I had family in town. I also am very impressed with the color choices for the metal roof. I didn't vote for metal and I had no idea that they could make a metal roof look anything like the pictures shown. I agree with the patio frig. I want to just relax and listen to nature and not have to leave the patio to get a fresh drink. Also, Ahmed did mention that he was saving some of the local rocks for landscaping. I would love to see a dry river bed along the left side of the house leading to a small water feature. Lastly, thank you to Weather Girl for the great information. Since I am not familiar with the conditions in that part of the country, I was happy to see that you do experience all the seasons. Do you get snow? We just had 7 inches for Easter, and are expecting about 3 more inches of the "white stuff" on Thursday.
Hope everyone had a great weekend and Easter.

Hey Everyone!

Well I am back from Kentucky! I leave New England on a nice sunny day only to arrive in Lexington in a snow storm - who would think!!!! Had to come back to New England to get some nice spring weather.

Kathy Seals - thank you for the information on the webmaster have sent an email and hopefully he/she will be able to assist me.

Erika (Cabincraver2008) - hon I did see your blog on the previous page. Hope Mom is home and doing better. She is still in my prayers and always in my thoughts as you are. Hope you had a wonderful Easter Day! Not easy taking care of a parent when you have children to take care of also. Just make sure you take care of yourself, don't overdue and get some alone time for you to just relax and have some quiet time! And when Mom is back please drop in to say "HI" and let us know how you are doing!!!!

Well I love the new choices - WOW! The only choices I would not want would be the railroad ties (do not hold up over time) and the outdoor speakers (would want to treat my neighbors better than having blaring music on a beautiful summer night! Can do with less noise in our lives.) Since they are not winning anyways would be extremely happy with all the other choices.

Love that we have a choice for tools space - love the roof color choices - love the patio design choices! Cannot lose.

Wil - I like your thinking about the hot tub. A must have! Great for old bones like mine and for anyone who has any kind of back problems. You haven't lived until you have sat in a hot tub during a snow storm - awesome!!!!

Watson - love the progess of the cabin but when will the chimmey be going up - it is still going up isn't it?????? Have you found anything out about the changes that are not suppose to be part of the cabin and what is going to be done about them?????

Have a wonderful "Spring Day" everyone!

Thank You Weather Girl who ever you are ! It is so nice to find that you have such mild winters in TN. Comparatively speaking of course.

Taxes, You could almost make a business giving tours of the home but I am not sure what the HOA would have to say about that?
Perhaps the DIY crew could hand the owner couple thousand of The DIY crew signed photos to auction off thru Ebay ? Or perhaps something simple like official DIY stickers, pens, or coffee mugs ?
Fact is, I would hate to see anyone have to sell this beautiful home because they couldnt afford the taxes.

I'm confused. I thought this cabin had a wrap around(wood)deck so where does the brick patio go? I really don't see where any of these choices are too appealing except the stone hardscaping which Ahmed had already decided on back when he visited the site. If I had known these were the colors they were going to use for the roof, I wouldn't have voted for metal. I'm still upset about the lack of handicapped accessability and no one at DIY seems to be addressing the issue. Have you ever felt the pain in your back when you take a wheelchair over cobblestone? I would say NO or you wouldn't be putting it around this house but it's just one of many anti handicapped options that DIY and the bloggers are choosing.

This has to be by far the absolute best thing on my PC; to be able to watch the cabin come together and to have a say as to what goes into it. The cabin from last year was amazing and I am sure this one will top that. Great, Wonderful and Fantastic.

Posted by: david at March 26, 2008 6:39 AM

Great choices again. We voted for the outdoor fridge but we are wondering if there is going to be an outdoor kitchen for this fridge. Or just a spot for a barbeque grill?
Keep up the good work

Good Morning DIY Crew and Fellow Bloggers! :-) Just took a quick look at the cabin cam and it is really beautiful. I did notice that the left dormer window is off centered to the left, when compared to the right dormer. It is not aligned with the window below it. Is that a illusion from the camera? They just look off center. This is certainly an amazing location. Looking forward to the landscaping. I thought a large raised Lavender bed, Cone Flowers, and Lupins ect. I was also thinking a Weeping Cherry Tree on each corner of the house facing the lake. Their blooms are just beautiful in the spring. A nice evergreen also would draw the cardinals for color and a large Bird Feeder on the Lake side would also be nice.

Posted by: Heading South at March 26, 2008 7:34 AM

Hello Whawkins and fellow bloggers!

Love these choices! Does this mean the huge area on the lakeside of the walkout basement will have gorgeous pavers and even(possibly) an outdoor kitchen?

Also notice an ad for Trex decking to the right of the page. Any chance for that on all those huge main level decks? If so, I'm voting for Brasilia style. It looks just like Ipe (Brazilian ironwood) which is very popular in high-end homes now.

Cabincraver & Erika: Still praying!

Hello one and all!

It's always fun when new things to vote on pop up. I am happy to say my choices are doing well. The views of the house are exciting now that it is starting to look like a real cabin. I continue to be thrilled by the views - can't wait until the trees leaf out!

When doing the garden, please don't forget about the bat houses I mentioned once before.

Weather Girl...thanks for the yearly temps in Spring City, TN.

I'm for the heater as I'm not lazy and would be happy to run to the fridge OR maybe I'm lazy and want to sit under the heater with hot cocoa.

Living near a large body of water lowers temps from 3 to 10 degrees and wind chill factors can also lower the temp. So I HAVE to opt for the heater so I can be with nature more often!

I'm for the fan stones as they remind me of the ripples on the lake.

Stones in the landscape from the land, as shown by Ahmed, brings natural beauty.

Those are the only choices that I'm passionate enough to advocate for **wink, wink, nudge, nudge**

The cabin is looking great!

Posted by: DebiDee at March 26, 2008 9:16 AM

I have a confession....I'm addicted to this web page. I check it out at least 3 or 4 times a day. The home is looking beautiful and it's amazing how quickly it is going up. Watching the progress is so exciting. Keep up the good work!

Posted by: jac at March 26, 2008 9:45 AM

The outdoor fridge is the best idea so far. Coming in from the lake, whether boating or swimming, it'll save on the cleaning by just going to that fridge and grabbing something quick. Also, the stone is the only way to go. Termites LOVE those timbers. I don't care what you put on them, they, the termites, will find a way to eat them. This cabin will be loads of fun !!

Posted by: Kina at March 26, 2008 10:59 AM

I live in the south and I would think that a lighter color roof would be better for the hot summers we get down here. I also thing that the dark roof color will make the cabin too dark. I still think it would be nice if we could see the roof choices in contrast to the chosen finish on the logs.

I agree that I would rather have the speakers installed because of the wiring issues. I am a music person, but I personally listen to music that would not be that loud or disturb the neighbors.

Posted by: Earalav at March 26, 2008 11:33 AM

Doesn't seem like as many are voting on the new choices. I am just trying to keep up. I switched my vote from the heater to the fridge because of the fireplace. This will be a nice cabin no matter what is voted in. I just hope whoever wins won't have to sell it like so many have had to sell their dream home. Anyone have any numbers on taxes that will be due.

Posted by: Towny at March 26, 2008 12:32 PM

Remember, leaves and sap fall on that light colored roof and how unsightly; the darker color will mask that. also, the stone scaping is a great idea. the fanned paver style choice is great, no specific focal point, so you could arrange anything, like a grill or FRIDGE on it, as far as a heater, if it is that cold, I am going to be INSIDE by the beautiful fireplace!
The craftsman workbench is a great idea for all the necessities for the garage,,

Posted by: lin at March 26, 2008 2:58 PM

I love the colors for the roof. Last years green was a little too green for me. The neutral browns are great !!

Posted by: M C at March 26, 2008 4:58 PM

Looks like we lost the arch windows in the front... sad... they added character to the cabin.

Posted by: Barbara Turner at March 26, 2008 5:21 PM

??? Does anyone know about the busing for kids going to school? Sould they catch the bus at the Cabin, or have to go to the Entrance of the Estates to get on???

Also waiting to find out the grounding with a metal roof (because of thunder storms)!!!

Posted by: Susan (from OH) at March 26, 2008 8:13 PM

Connie, I agree with you and Clive. I really hope they decide to use the Trex decking. That would be so much easier to care for , just wash it off.
Good to see this roof going up so fast. I think this round of voting might be coming to an end a little sooner than usual with this progress.
I printed off the color choice for the siding and held it up against the photo on the main page , since it is the leading in votes. Not sure how accurate this is but its not too bad of a combo.
Erin , Wil, I would also love to see a hot tub somewhere in the mix. That would be the ultimate wouldn't it?
So, can we walk on this type of roofing to make repairs if necessary? I know the flat metal is not problem as long as you don't step on the ridges. But I have never worked with this type. You don't see too many metal roofs in Washington State. At least not "on homes" in the Wet half. Don't get me wrong, The rain is great to listen to ! But a week or two of straight rain or every second or third day can be a little much.
Another plug for the boiling hot water spigot. I like hot chocolate too.

Posted by: BlognBob at March 26, 2008 9:35 PM

I love the fan design for a patio. I had the round and it is hard to place patio furniture outside of it say in a square instead of a circle. Someone asked where the patio would be, well if I'm reading it right, underneath the upper deck w/access to the house from a doorwall. It would be a walkout basement. This one is a lil bit different, so I'm waiting to see how it really comes out. The way it looks so far, here in MI that is called a bi-level and not a walkout. Here a basement has to be underground on three walls to be called a basement. Yep, you can have daylight windows on those three walls and a doorwall or direct outdoor access on the fourth. According to my real estate neighbor anyways. I'm so hoping DIY will pop for both the outdoor speakers and the fridge. How cool would it be to have an outdoor kitchen and stero? You wouldn't get me inside except to sleep if I had that. Wait, I could sleep on the murphey bed on the screened in porch off the master. I want to say a big thanks to Weather Girl for posting them temps for us. OMG I so wanna win this. Those year round average temps sound like heaven to me. Yet again we poor sods in MI are getting more snow for the next couple three days. It won't last {we're all hoping} but some warmth would be appreciated about now, its been a long winter. We set record snow falls here where I live. Oh, lets not forget the workshop/garden/sports area. Why would anyone not want all three? Why couldn't all three be possible in the same space? Must have something to do with the man cave thing. I sure don't get it.

The consensus is taxes will be about $200,000 +/- 10%. Steep but possibly not out of reach for some.

This is my first time to blog. I love love love this cabin and all the features are going to be great! And the location is my all time favorite!!
I did; however, vote for the outdoor heater because I am sure I would want to spend as much time as possible looking at that beautiful view and this heater would extend the time I could do that. Love the metal roof and feel the country color would be best with the cabin stain.
God bless and hope to keep blogging!

Posted by: PeggyA at March 26, 2008 10:28 PM

I like the darker colors for roofs, I know they don't reflect as much heat from the sun but it looks better on a cabin of this style.

Posted by: Polywood at March 26, 2008 11:08 PM

Hi to all my blogging friends. I hope you all had a good a relaxing Easter. Ours was both and enlivened by 6 very active children to keep us old crocks on our toes. Wow, things have certainly moved along in the building, blogging and choices. I'll try to catch-up on all the blogs later. The new tip-line is fun too especially if you want a quick chat either 1on1 or with everyone to get a quick response.

It’s apparent that the cabin will not incorporate all the revised ideas from Darlene Branim but it still looks great. My only concern at this point is that so much of the south facing side is wall (there is only a single door and one window on the 1st level) that it will be a bit gloomy especially in the master bed and main room.

I have to agree with many other bloggers that it's a bit difficult choosing a roof color without it being juxtaposed to the wall color. Going light will certainly keep the cabin a bit cooler in summer but darker will help warm it in winter so there are no real 'winners' there. I'm assuming that the tones are similar because of the Regs and Covenants of Lakefront Estates which state that all roofs should be cedar shingles unless they give permission otherwise.

The stone is a no-brainer for the landscaping and it seems nearly everyone agrees with that.

I like the ripple/fan patio effect. Square would be OK as I assume it's going outside the walkout basement on the lakeside but the fan effect is in harmony with the ripples of the lake and doesn't delineate the space as much as the straight lines of the square would. The circle is my least favorite (not so the voting majority) as it really isn't in harmony with anything and tends to make everything draw towards the middle of the patio and away from the yard and the view.

I dislike outdoor speakers (just personal taste), much preferring live music or natural sounds. There's going to be a stunning media room to listen to as much music as one wants. I believe the patio should be a haven from electronic music, TV's radios etc. Somewhere to listen to nature and hold a conversation without competing with other noises. The deck above can have as much sound as you wish. The heater may be OK - they can be noisy and often too hot to get near- but I'm holding out for some sort of outdoor kitchen/living room with a fireplace/fire pit for warmth. Therefore, my vote is for the fridge. Imagine coming straight up from the lakeside, maybe after a fun paddle in the canoe, and finding a cool refreshing beverage waiting in the shaded, relaxing and comfortable outdoor living space. One of Ahmed’s rock garden features is on the north side of this and there is a pondless waterfall adding its own music to the scene. No need to go indoors yet, just unwind and enjoy the moment. I’m just wondering where DIY can put the outdoor shower which is a ‘must’ surely for this cabin, and a cooling misting system for those hot, humid 'dog' days.

Last, but certainly not least, our thoughts go out to CabinCraver to give her strength to confront her pain and our hopes for her full recovery. Also to all those others who are enjoying this cabin and the blogs so much and who have similar burdens to bear. Strength to you all.

The cabin is really coming along nicely. I just got through voting. I really like the Timberwood color/style for the roof. it goes wonderfully with the natural surroundings of the woods and the lake.

Posted by: Dorann at March 27, 2008 2:10 AM

LOOKING GOOD :-) I agree with tina on the circle design. It does limit where you can put things. I like the timber roof the best and dont believe it would add that much heat to the cabin as long as it is on the water and you have a nice cross breeze through the cabin. I am quessing it can get pretty humid in Tennessee and having lived in Minnesota I know what humidty feels like, not to mention mosiquitos. When my family moved to Washington state we found that shade is really shade here :-)
I love the brick...but that is just me...I have seen so many beautiful patios and pathways. I also like the fridge outside as my hubby and me both come from families of six children and have many neices and nephews....hopefully grandchildren in time.
Keep up the great work you master carpenters...Jesus is smiling :-) God Bless Ruthie

ps, I'm definetely into the hot-tub outside, if the steam shower lost out then that would be a great way to warm up after cooling down in the lake ..

I don't know anything about the taxes, but the cost of the lots alone in that area start at $159,000. This is a great lot (#5), so I'm sure it is even more costly than that. The cabin is looking good!! I can't wait until we get the chance to enter the contest.

Posted by: Jan at March 27, 2008 7:33 AM

I am rather disappointed in the colors for the roof. unless the hoa has restrictions I would love to see a red roof and a red front door. I agree a cash prize to help with taxes would be great because this could end up a financial night mare for the winner if they aren't able to pay the taxes. I love rocks, so saving the rocks from the property are a great way to save $$ and they go great with the look of the cabin. I too would love to see the pot filler.

Posted by: shereen at March 27, 2008 7:50 AM

Love the way the cabin is progressing and how it looks on the lakeside landscape. I am again voicing my opinion about the landscaping design. NATURAL. No high maintenance plantings please. How about a watersedge garden- water iris yellow and blue, catonine, etc. I know there are probably lots of restrictions about what can or can't be planted. Ahmed I know you will give us the best for the location.

Posted by: Jenny at March 27, 2008 8:47 AM

Doug stated:
"I am surprised by the choices for roof. Why was metal not an option?"

Metal not only was an option...it WON. All we are choosing now is what color and style the metal roof will be!

Off to check out the cabin cam...can't believe the roof is going up already!

Barbara:
According to Darlene Branim at Barna They added an arch window to the rear entry to match the master bath. Maybe they are going to do something later to have the openings. According to the plans there is a 3rd one on the 2nd floor as well.

I know we don't see all of the work but I was wondering about the waterproofing on the basement where the dirt has been filled against the exterior walls. Will more dirt be brought in and the basement be hidden from the road view?

I was also wondering why a garden window will be placed in the kitchen. The porch would be along that side and if it is a covered porch how will sunlight get to the window?

I don't see why two doors are needed of the dining area to the porch. A window would be great when you want to get a cross breeze.

I have seen a few emails about the heater and fireplace. The heater is for the patio and the fireplace is on the porch off the great room. I agree with another blogger about if it is that cold I will be near the fireplace or even inside the house. I like the frig since it will keep people from tracking into the house and basement to get a drink. It also will be great when you have a party or family get together.

I like the Timberwood roof color. It is not as dark as it seems. You also need to contrast the log stain color.

I have done a couple of blogs that were not posted for some reason. In both I had a note to the new comers about entry to win the cabin. That will start much later. The cabin has to be built first then start the contest to win it. Right now we are only making choices and watching the beginning work of the cabin.

By the way I also noticed the logs are not being used for the 2nd floor exterior. The plans show the logs. I guess this will be a half log cabin exterior. If anyone knows the answer please respond.

I don't see a picture today from the cabin cam so I will have to check back around noon.

Hey does anyone know anything about the area of Tenn. where this Lakefront Estates is? I thought I saw that Helen - lived near there - cany she tell us a bit more about the area - schools, shops, neighberhood etc... I am quite curious is this a ritzy section of town or just a vacation place turning into a year-round town?? Also, does anyone have any ideas about what it is going to cost the winner of this cabin with all its luxory items we have voted on??

god bless cabin craver and erika:).
still dont know where the patio is going to be ??? whats up with that? im thinking that it will be off basement. i looked at the paver choices and all three looked ok to me but did vote for the circular one . also the out door fridge you could actually move it to deck or patio. and i have a hot tub so im thinking placeing side deck by master . we actually placed it [our mountain home] 3 steps out the breeseway door.
thankyou weather girl for the temps, so how much snow +rain?? . i was surprized about the mild weather tho. we're in mountains of az 7000 ft so what is the altitude in tenn? seems like every winter is different here been here 9 yrs and 1st winter of significant snow .
as far as the roof color butternut won for log color so i think dark would would contrast the best . but actually voted for the lite cause of the summer heat . niether is winning tho.
i loved the work bench.altho the sports center was interesting .

Could B.J.’s “dynamic duo”, or any of the other very knowledgeable souls that Blog please answer a few questions for me???? Things about the Blog are troubling me…

1. Do our votes for the options actually count? I happened to be on the DIY 2008 Blog Cabin site when the page for the new options loaded. I voted immediately, but to my surprise, thousands of votes had already been tallied, with clear leaders in every category. Guess that is possible, but, the ‘predetermined favorites’ were so far ahead in votes from the other choice numbers, that to overtake them seemed highly unlikely. The options that were the winners from the get-go are still the front runners. All the option choices are great, and the cabin will benefit from any of the additions. But … a choice is not really a choice if the voting outcome is predetermined … so, my question is … does anyone else think the options are already known, and DIY is just appearing to give us a say in the matter to generate interest in the project?

2. Why is it, if the entries are all held for review by the moderators that so few inquiries are ever answered by them? It seems that any real insight into the project details come from the Bloggers who take the time to do research and pass on their findings to the rest of us. My question again is, do you believe any of our comments, suggestions, or insights are taken seriously by DIY or the builder?

3. In the same vein as #2 … Do you think that Barna Homes knew of the Covenants and Restrictions before they were posted by a Blogger? We all know now that The San Jacinto plan, as presented at the time of voting did not even meet the community’s basic requirements. It was only after portions of the C &R were posted, that the builder appeared to realize that the original footprint of the project didn’t quite fit on the lot. Even then, with the exception of the addition of a basement to house the garage which was essential to meet the A.C.C. approval for street concealed garage door entry, the ‘final plans’ that Darlene unveiled don’t seem to have made it to the log package delivered to the job site. What else is being overlooked by the builder on this project? The cost of this ‘prize’ for the winner, has been a subject of many posts, and has been estimated at over $250,000.00. Could the winner be confronted with even higher costs to correct hidden oversights once they take possession of their fabulous prize? Someone posted that there are no RHEA county building inspections (NOTE: the septic system is scrutinized and its installation strictly regulated by the TVA), so, does anyone know if anyone is watching Barna Log Homes for possible costly building irregularities?

4. One final question …. If all the entries are being read for content, and our comments are taken seriously, why do you think that the discrepancies in the cabin being built with the final plan presented by Barna Log Homes’ president were not addressed in a timely manner? Again, if the decisions about the cabin changes were too costly, wouldn’t a simple post about that be appropriate? Did the builder and DIY just think nobody would notice the lack of continuity, or do the powers at be really even care?

It bothers me to think of all the Bloggers who have put so much heart and soul into this project, especially if it is discovered that all their great suggestions have been for naught....

Bottom line, I guess all my questions stem from my real concern ... Why did DIY create a Blog Area and instant Chat Area and act if our suggestions have merit if, in reality, our input really doesn’t amount to a hill of beans in the big 2008 Blog Cabin DIY picture?

The arched windows at the front (roadside) were included in Darlene's remodel blog of Feb 14th, together with the windows in the master bed. Looks like instead of adding an arched window to give symmetry they have decided to remove them both. Same for the M Br windows which have been omitted leaving only a single door on the S. Side.

I do like 'Trex' decking but I know of a better product for this cabin. It's "RainEscape" http://www.rainescape.com/ from "Correct Deck"
http://www.correctdeck.com/
My brother-in-law installed it on his lake house which has a very similar design (not logs though) to this one. They have an extended, wrap-around deck and this product is ideal as it allows the lower space to be used with a completely sealed roof. All water, including when washing the upper deck periodically, is channeled away between the decking boards and down the rain downspouts. Thus the under patio is always dry and they can leave furniture outside in all but the worst weather. It also has similar finishes to 'Trex' with the addition that their CX product is impregnated with 'microban' an antifungal to keep the deck clean and is made from polypropylene so is more long lasting than some composites.

Hey how about that (possible) outdoor shower being located "under" the upstairs entertainment room. One could enclose it with a rocked wall matching the chimney materials and have a beautiful waterfall feature on the outside of it for the patio areas. "Talking about having a nice surprise double feature". The shower on one side and a waterfall on the other side. The shower room is where one could use the circle patio and also I suggest using the circular patio & screening in the rest of the area under there as a ground level entertainment or storage area. Then one could use the wavy patio on both sides of the the "basement level entertainment room " a matching & winding path down to the water.

The area where the Lakefront Estates subdivision in Rhea County is about 20-25 mins from central Spring City, off Rt 68, or Watts Bar Hwy. It is just across from the Meigs County boat slips and Park. Google maps have a pretty good map of the area.

Spring City is a small town going through a lot of growth, but they are succeeding in keeping the small town feel of the place. There are subdivisions popping up everywhere, really, everywhere. With the expected influx of people involved with the start up of the second reactor at Watts Bar Nuclear, there's a busy Real Estate sector! The High School is for the entire county.
The town center is charming, but the railway passes right through the center of town! Cuts it in half, actually. There's an Ace hardware store, a Piggly Wiggly grocery store, drug store, some restaurants, Family Dollar store, 3, yes THREE florists, King's Pizza (Best pizza we've had in ages)half a dozen Real Estate offices, about a dozen Churches or more, a couple of consignment shops, an upscale HoJo hotel and I am sure I have left out other businesses. Last I checked, the population was under 3,000. Rhea County has a pretty informative Website. There is a real mix of upscale homes, mostly on the lake's shoresides, vacation homes from rustic to beyond elaborate, and smaller, older homes. Any major department or specialty stores are in Chattanooga or Knoxville, about an hours' drive either south or north respectively. There's a Home Depot in Dayton (25 mins) and a Lowe's in Kingston (about 30 mins). You can't help but notice an automobile graveyard as you head into town on Rt.27.That's an eyesore, for sure.

Anyway, I hope this helps those of you that were curious about the area.

Regards,

Sheila

I have posted eleven blogs from four different pc's and none of them ever get on this page. They must limit them to only the same few people, I do notice that many of the blogs have the same names.. hope this gets through, maybe I will have to put a fake name for preference...LOL
anyway, I love the outdoor fridge idea, it is on wheels which will help moving it around, also the fan paving pattern will be great because with a circular one, there is a certain focal point, with fan, you can move things anywhere,, as far as the tin roof goes, the pics are MERELY EXAMPLES, this one is to show which colors, not the actual roofing.. the darker color would work best under trees because of moss and sap issues, which I have on my roof which now needs replacing after only 11 years! Stone hardscaping is great because bricks shift and eventually crumble(personal experience), railroad ties leech resin and/or creosote if they are so treated, also personal experience..
the quality of these products is top notch, as is the staff actually doing the buying and construction: great job all of you. Just think how nice a glider will be with that fridge next to it, sipping a frosty beverage, listening to the birds, hopefully seeing fireflies at night, or loons if they ever go there,, they are near me.. if I win, you all can come for a BBQ and try all the fun stuff out,if they do not restrict visitors too,,

Blognbob I am so surprised you have never seen lightning bugs (fireflys) or wild turkey! But being from ky I see them regularly. I never thought about the northerners not being able to see such delights. They are fascinating bugs and big birds. I was one of the little kids who diamond ringed them light bugs. I didn't know any better mind you bug lovers! I do know that in the Smoky Mountains you see wild turkey alot. There was some at the last cabin we rented digging through our trash! Really digging through the trash! After Corn cobs.... Around the blog cabin I don't know for sure if there would be fireflys. Turkeys probably! I would think they would be there. That is an hour or so away from the Smoky area. Fireflys I'm not sure about but if you were to ever visit Pigeon Forge, Tn area go to Cades Cove. That would be the likely place to see them! It's a great big mountainous cove farm park. Just gorgeous! One of my favorite places! There are wild turkey and deer and bear there! We like to go there a couple times a year. We get out in one of the big fields and fly kites in the spring time and have a picnic. The best time to see the lightning bugs if they are there would be right before dark when the ground starts getting damp. You would see them start flying up out of the ground and off the trees. They are alot of fun to watch & try to catch and let crawl on you no matter your age.... I have enjoyed this delight my whole life and even have taught my kids to catch and release them. You don't see them like you used too though! It won't be long they will be returning!

Love the new cabin slide show pictures! Being able to see all around the cabin was really nice and the view will be spectacular through those french doors and entertainment room at the lakeside/ back. I can't wait to see our doubled fireplace in there! Looks like you got cement floors in the basement somehow.... and we have what looks like roughed in plumbing in the cubby hole. So I think that means there will be a full bath or kitchenette down there! yeah!!!!!!!! Can't wait to see finalized floor plans for the entire house. Also alot of the bloggers are worried about the sunburst windows that's mentioned in the original layouts on the front windows. We all would like to know if that has been changed or not. I see that there is both windows and a door on the master bedroom/garage wall. I think that will be alot of light coming in. I personally would love to see a lake scened stain glass window with a hidden diy symbol in a fish in the master bed or bathroom window. That would be a cool reminder of where and how the house come from.

'Sleepless in Seattle' does have a valid point. There has beeen absolutely no comment from the DIY people regarding the apparent mix-up in the plans except a terse comment from Watson that they were 'looking into it'. Certaily, in some areas we are being herded into voting for what they want by engineering the photos of the options such that there is an obvious choice and a bunch of also-rans. Maybe letting the 'people' have too much say is not a good thing for the producers of the show?

Thank You so much Carrie Miracle, for the information on the fireflys and turkeys. Nope ! Have never seen either one in my life. But I am anxious to come visit TN. some time in my life , as I know I have distant family somewhere around there. I am going to write those places down, so I remember to see them ! Turkey in the trash? Only turkey I seen in the trash was the one I threw there. I see That Piney island is historical in one way or another but I can't find any info. on how it is. There is no turkey in Washington that I have ever heard of. Perhaps I need to get a few and plant them out in the hills up there. Definitely not lightning bugs. Now my question to you Carrie is; have you ever seen a Geoduck? Which in a way leads to my next conversation with one of former locals.

Sleepless in Seattle, I lived in the shoreline area for a short time. How is the rain? If you all noticed, I said rain, not weather.

As I was planning beforehand to address this in regards to some previous inquiries , I believe this cabin is providing a lot of very good advertising for this particular development , and also helping to promote the surrounding properties and homes in what appears to be a higher end of the local market. And this Cabin "may", and again I say "may" have just a very slight leeway with the rules. Given its importance) I doubt there might be little too much leeway , but I believe there must be just a slight bit. Otherwise we could not change the work in progress as we have done.

Clive alive and well I hope ? Nice chatting with you. And Thank You for the info. on rainscape and correctdeck. I "will" look those up right after this post! If you say it is good , then I would support you in it 100 percent. I am really curious about that draining system now. Do you know if this is city or well water? Hard or soft water ? I think I remember a post about a lot of iron in it.

Sheila, Thank You so much for your wonderful information on the area. It is always nice to get to know an area from some good local folk. Wow , that is a small town .

The house is looking absolutely wonderful DIY !
Thank You Ever so Much !

Thanks for the update on the camera slide show. It is so wonderful to see the progress on the Blog cabin both from camera and the tree camera. I'm glad to see spring is coming on strong and that means that summer will not be far behind with August here before you know it!

Good morning, all! Just had a chance to look at the latest pictures! Like everyone else, I'm sure, I can imagine myself walking out of that cabin to that wonderful view!

It's almost like we are all home builders watching it go up. I hope that the new owners will get an album of all these great pictures.

Happy watching!

I am curious why the builder didn't use P2000 insulation for the roof. My opinion is that this product is one of the better on the market and provides an R-value second to none. Feedback would be appreciated!

Thanks and happy building.

Hi everyone, it's me. I'm home. So much is going on and I need to rest all the time that when I am sitting here I am just going to read and see what you guys have been up to, who is saying what, etc. Bless all of you that sent your thoughts and prayers! Erika said she sent one blog that had everyone's name, and she was hoping that Erin saw it as it was on a previous page.

I have one thing to say and then I must go. We have an outdoor firepit and outdoor speakers plus a hot tub. The firpit is great because it is easy to move and several people can gather around it. The hot tub keeps us warm, and the music keeps us relaxed or singing or dancing; whatever the mood. I hope they install the speakers because wiring a house once it is built is very tricky and can make a mess if the contractor doesn't know what they are doing.

I've missed you all, love the new voting choices, hello to Watson and Ahmed, and MAY THE WORTHIESST BLOGGER WIN!

Back to beddiebye. Keep it up! Cabincraver2008

Hey! Did you notice the cement truck next to the house in the photos from last night (Thursday, March 27). I think that they might have actually poured the basement floor.

About the arched windows: is it possible that they will cut the arches out just before they install the windows? Just a thought.

It would be nice if the Moderators would jump in and answer some of our questions. :-) Over on the Dream House Blogs, fcole does that quite often. It is great fun! PLEASE!

I have been following the Blog Cabin for quite some time and been an addict of DIY since I've had DirecTV. I have been reading what others have said about this cabin and it's great that there's this community of folks blogging for a chance to win the cabin; designed by voters (us). I have a father who works in the supply of construction (lumber and stuff)and is extremely knowledgable about every facet of construction from ground up and even he is intrigued about this whole process of voting and computers having a say in the winner of a cabin. We grew up watching PBS, Bob Vila, Norm Abrams and the group of This Old House. I am now addicted to the DIY channel and have had fights with my wife for the remote.
If there was "How It's Made" from the Science Channel move to the DIY Channel, there would be only be one channel that I watched when I watched.
By the way, I live in Long Island, NY.

I am from Arizona...we don't have lightning bugs or wild turkeys here...rarely have mosquitoes either. I have never experienced the need for a screened porch. Didn't even have a snowflake this year, but it did get cold. I have never been to TN and I cannot wait to go there!!! To my own cabin!!

Thanks DIY and Watson the new choices are great again. It was nice to see Amy again and the side show was good. One question how far off the road is the cabin and how close is it to the lake? From one of the pictures it look like you were going down to the cabin from road. Thanks to Sheila for the Info.

Thank you to Lynn for the estimate of the taxes.  I am just an average guy and don't make the big bucks.  How does everyone feel about moving?  My wife was a military brat and she has moved 48 times and that has been hard for her.  Her family is originally from Tennessee and she lived in Tn for awhile.  Home is where the heart is and if its with family, as it usually is, does everyone have family and or friends close to the cabin?  I am just curious.  Good luck to all who are voting and blogging.  The voting is going well and the guys who are building are doing a superb job.

If you have not looked at the cabin cam be sure to check it out. They have started the porch on the right side where you see the driveway. It looks like they are doing something at the front entrance porch as well.

How can they have so much trash? Think green and save larger boards and pieces to use where you can. My brother and sister-in-law did the clean up almost daily when they built a really beautiful home on a lake. They demanded builder use what they could and monitored them. They kind of were like a GC. They saved a few thousand dollars in building their home doing these types of materials savings and sweat equity like cleaning. They also found some of the materials and got them cheaper than the builder quoted, flooring, tile and appliances were big ticket items. Unfortunately we can not be there to do those things but it is green to use what you can and put less in the landfill.

I just got a look at the home today and it is coming along fantastic. The way the this home is set with the front facing the water reminds me of my great-grandmothers. We would go there in the summer as children and when it would rain we would stand under the front porch to get soaking wet. It was so much fun! I was really disappointed when her home was lost to the family, I would have love to have had it. Is there a way to have a water saving feature like this installed in this home? I know that you can buy rain barrels for the ends of your drain work but I am not certain how they work now. People don't realize it but you can have the nicest, shiny hair that you have ever had by just rinsing your hair with this type of water that has not been treated with chemicals. It can also be used for watering gardens, pets, running into a pond etc. I don't know what the rainfall is there but we have certainly been short on that in the last few years and I think it is something that we all need to think about. I installed one at my home but it is a homemade contraption and that is what I use the water for.
I can hardly wait for the cabin to be finished to see the completed product. It is going to be beautiful.

But they are all so beautiful ,so it is tough to pick a favorite.
Ahmed, Chris, Simon You are doing such an awesome job ! This is all incredible. I really liked the tour of the Barna Mill by Darlene, Amy and Ahmed. Reminded me of home. My Great Grandparents owned a logging company in Oregon way back when. I could almost smell those fresh cut logs.
I also liked the slide shows with the Updates and Chris Grundy. Great Shots. Will the tool man have a vblog added?

Hi Fellow Bloggers,
Cabin is looking great!! What was the cement truck for? Maybe the patio? If so, why are we still voting? I'm also confused as to where the patio is going to be. I'm also confused about the window placements. LOVE the idea of an outside shower. We visit the Outer Banks every summer and wouldn't dream of renting a house without an outside shower. It REALLY saves on the cleaning and mess inside the house.
Clive - so happy to read that you had a great Easter. Same here, except for the SNOW! I agree with all of your choices. Can't wait to read more of your landscape ideas. I too want a dry river bed with a waterfall or water feature. The sound is totally relaxing. It reminds me of the ocean.
Cabincraver and Erica - you are still in our prayers and thoughts.
Have a great weekend and THINK SPRING!!!

I have to agree a back-up generator is a must...

I'm also beginning to think that the cabin is already in the works before our votes go in...
The pic's and the work on the cabin don't match or go with the blogs...

It seems that after the next project starts, they're going back to post a pic (suposively of the day)

Other pics showed cement floor in basement, but we're just now seeing the cement truck...
??? Maybe someone else could elaborate on it???

It's OK... I still enjoy seeing the progression of the cabin, but I'm just adding my opinion...

Our prayers are with you Cabincraver & Erica!

The roof choices are the ugliest I've ever seen. If you want faux shingles why bother with metal, just go with shingles. And, since I am already compaining, it would be nice to see these colors against the chosen stain. Browns don't all match.

I love Ahmed's idea to save the native stone for the landscape. Perfect! And, Ahmed, I STILL want a multi-level log fort for the kids to play in.

Posted by: katie at March 29, 2008 10:44 AM

Good grief Colleen! (Sleepless in Seattle) you have WAY too much time on your hands! Why is it that there's always someone that's more than willing to bring everyone else down? To pick apart things and always look at the negative in everything? Take a chill pill and GO TO SLEEP!!

The cabin is coming along nicely. I've put Blog Cabin in my Favorites and it's the first thing I click on when I get home from work. I enjoy the voting and watching the cabin progress. It's great fun...and if there is some Great Dark Conspiracy going on...I REALLY just don't care.

Happy Blogging!

Sorry Colleen! I got the blogging posts mixed up.

Posted by: Belinda at March 29, 2008 11:41 AM

My four year old son and I just started watching the 2007 Blog Cabin on TV. He loves it. We need to DVR it because it's on to late for him to be up, but we watch it the next day when I get home from work. I just came to the website and started voting. Outdoor heater? A little over the top, but why not I guess...I voted for the speakers, they can be used year round. I didn't quite care for the metal roof options, but voted anyway. Great show and great ideas. I wish I had time to read all the blogs, but its time to tackle my home projects.

Posted by: Mike at March 29, 2008 12:12 PM

I like the Blog Cabin designs for the Landscaping, However, I'd like to see Native Trees, plants and possibly a garden area such as a small grapevine and a couple of fruit trees such as apple or cherry.

Another suggestion is to use a wood or pellet stove such as a central boiler unit in the next blog cabin to help offset rising fuel bills and to go a little greener.

The cabin could also use a tankless hotwater heater and be built with a Southern exposure.

DenseArmor wallboard could be used on walls in bathrooms, and the kitchen to help cut down on mold etc.

I really like the idea of a garage with a work bench/ work center but since I also own garden equipment I'd like to see both in the garage.

Maybe on your next project you could have a greenhouse buitl as well.

Are y'all using Energy Efficient lighting, Water conserving faucets and shower heads?

Well take care and keep up the good work. Some of the stuff y'all are installing is a little too rich for me, But I still like it.

BTW I'm a first time blogger but I've voted on what I like in past cabins and this one as well.

Posted by: Ray at March 29, 2008 12:15 PM

Wow, I hope this voting ends soon so that metal roof can go on. I'm guessing that the insulation is wrapped to prevent it from getting wet, it looks a little cloudy.

Clive...what a unique name! Seeing as how there seem to be so few....are you the Clive on HGTV? It's just been making me wonder with all your knowledge... ;)

As BlognBob said, "Thank you Weather Girl", I had no idea that is how the temps are out there(I'm in northern AZ). How's the humidity though, of course not taking into account being right on the lake, I mean for the general area?

I also agree with the drawbacks of the circle patio design, really draws the eye to the wrong area. I like how the fan design, I think it would really draw the eye to the beautiful surrounding landscape and nature.

Thank you all for your continued wealth of knowledge and anecdotes.

Praying for continued strength and healing for CabinCraver2008 and her family!

Posted by: Noël B at March 29, 2008 1:14 PM

You can always get an outdoor fridge or heater but you have to wire for outdoor speakers. With this in mind which would you rather do, pay for fridge/heater later or for wiring from your indoor system to the outside? I think it would be best to at least install the wiring during the building process.

GUYS, Love all the new things going on! The chat is lot's of fun ! You are all going way over the top and moving fast.

Helen,
It was so nice to talk with you a bit on the chat. And given your input I would like to strongly suggest to the DIY crew the necessity of and push for removable screens for the front deck. Or perhaps roll down netting of some sort. That could easily be set in the eves or above the openings , obscure and out of the way when not needed. Much like a portable screen awning. As the insect attacks apparently vary greatly with the season in this specific area.

Perhaps, a reason as to why our questions are not directly responded to aside from time contstraints may have a little something to do with the creating of personal affiliations with the bloggers and staff. Which could in reality, could legally eliminate us from entering to win this Cabin when the time comes couldn't it? It is just a guess on my part.
While there are some apparent things that appear to have been overlooked by our commentary, There have been major changes implemented that are in definite response to suggestions made in this blog. ie...A major floor plan revision, and a walk out basement with garages. Either way, the home is being built to be given away and I am Thankful for being even a smallest part of such a grand effort.
I guess, even if I had to sell the home , which I would dearly dread. At least I will always feel it a very nice part of my life for the friend I have made along the way.

ALSO I LOVE THE FAN DESIGN, IT IS DIFFERENT AND I LOVE DIFFERENT. ALSO THE STONES OF COURSE, BEING NATURE LOVING. I THINK IT WILL JUST ADD TO THE BEAUTY OF THE SURROUNDING. HAVE ENJOYED WATCHING THIS CAN,T WAIT FOR MORE. DREAMING MY NITES AWAY!!!

Posted by: Deborah Ingram at March 30, 2008 7:23 AM

WATSON!

Not yelling at you just trying to get your attention!!! Since the blogs have not been updated since the 27th and it is now the 30th you will have a bit of reading to do! It appears that the decking is going up (look at the cam on the garage side of the house) yet the fireplace still has not been built. When is this going up or has this been changed like the windows??? And talking about the windows you said you would get back to us about the changes in the cabin that are not suppose to be there - are you still going to do this or are you going to leave us hanging?????? Just asking - from the north and use to being direct that's all!

Carrie - being from the Northeast which is also the north we have fireflies and wild turkeys along with deer, fox, elk, and various other wild creatures in our woods - I have woods next to my house and have wild turkeys, deer, woodchucks, fox and I am sure many other animals that I have not seen yet! When we first moved here my cats went wild when they first saw the wild turkeys on their lawn and then did not like it when those deer came up to the door and went nose to nose with them! Neither knew what the other was apparently!! Like you as kids we made rings out of fireflies (we also did not know better at the time) and you are correct the best time to see them is right after dark. Since Blognbob is from the north I am assuming he is from the north in the western area of the country and the not the eastern part of the country like me! I am surprised like you that he also has not seen a wild turkeys or at least a firefly - if he does not live near woods I can see why he may not have seen a wild turkey but a firefly is every where. So Blognbob what is the scoop????? Maybe this is just something you see along the eastern coast line.

Erika - hope Mom is doing better and home again! Remember to take care of yourself - can't afford to have you get sick!!! Those young ones of yours would not be happy if their mother was under the weather so be sure to take care of yourself.

Clive - waiting to see if they listened to you about the deck or not - can you tell what type of material is being used?

Still hoping for that hot tub and an outdoor shower would also be great to have. (hint-hint)

Hope everyone is enjoying their "Spring" days since I am - it is so nice to have weather in the 50's again and rain instead of snow (hahaha).

Take care all!

hi fellow bloggers and diy,
the voting this time was hard every thing seemed so nice, but i was very surprized to see that the majority voted for the stones over the clean lines of the railroad ties or the brick,id really like to know why. i had a rock garden once and it seemed never ending cleanibg and stones rolling away in a storm and they are great for worms to breed under...thank god i have a hubby that goes fishing...lol
anyway im going to go with the railroad ties because they have that old town western look , you may not agree but thats ok eveybody has all kinds of good ideas these are just mine.railroad ties and a log home just go together.
you guys at diy are doing a fantastic job i kepp watching the old cabin being built and i write down some of you great ideas...the biggest one that impressed me was the painted rug , i still cant get over that one...i think a little fringe painted on the ends would of made it go over the top but otherwise thumbs up.
all have a reat day

The Chris Grundy visit pictures give a good view of every side except the mbr which helps a lot to see the final design layout. The long shot is great for enabling us to see how exactly the cabin fits into the plot and the plot to the surroundings. It really is a great place.

Hello, back from Zion National Park. Beautiful, peaceful, and had warm sunny weather (mostly).

Not much time to read blogs now though. Went from feeling refreshed to stressed in a day. Will catch up later this week. Also, had 7 new inches of snow the first day back. Just glad it was snow and not rain. Thankful we aren't dealing with the flooding hardships of the Midwest... After Zion, we really have spring fever so the snow was kind of disappointing.

Did have a chance to vote though! Only item I'm not in line with this round is my vote for the speakers. Only because I feel this would be the most difficult to add post-construction.

Sheila-Thank you for the information on Spring City = and to weather girl thank you for your post on the average temps - that helped in my vote from the heater to the fridge. I think that will be a better choice, although I think it will be costly either way, it does not seem like the choice we have are enegery efficent nor are they cost efficent. I think that no matter who wins - you are going to pay heavily year around for this grand cabin - which is coming along just beautifully I see! Cant beleive how fast it is going up!

Looking forward to the next round of voting. Merry:-)

Love the new choices we have to vote on.

The outdoor frig is the answer for all that wanted a wine cooler.

I like the fan patio like some said it goes with the flow toward the lake. The circle would make furniture placement confusing.

All the roof colors look great, I chose the last one.

I hope cabincraver is ok. Still in my prayers.

Keep blogging all

is it just me or has there been no progress with the cabin in the past three days, it seems as though they are waiting for the roof color to be determined, what do ya'al think

Hi All - It looks as if the winners for the new selection can be "projected" as they say in the elections. I am sorry to see that the patio fan design won't be included in this cabin. If you could see it standing looking out to the lake your eyes would not see a defined patio area but a flow into the landscape. Once the furniture is also included in the design it isn't busy at all but very eye appealing. The other designs define the patio area as a seperate space in the landscaping not part of the overall cabin to lake. Oh well, the majority rules and DYI has given us the opportunity to be included in the choices. Thank you.

Sheila you gave a pretty good description of the town. My family and I went for a drive from ky on Saturday March 29 and drove through Rhea county & Spring City area up S27 and got lucky was able to drive by and check out the diy cabin. Sheila's right, it is a very small town indeed divided by the railroad. It's charming! Had some neat looking restaurants nearby the ho jo. It was raining and it was around 4pm when we arrived so we didn't stay & look too long. I saw where the old rail road runs through going toward the blogcabin. Now I understand that choice on the voting. The town apparently has alot of railroad history. There should be an abundance of old railroad timbers in the area for builders to work with. The lot and house is just gorgeous. They are working on the porches as we see from the cabin cam. It absolutely did not disappoint me. The blog cabin builders and crew is doing a fine job. Give those guys a bonus diy. I was so thrilled to really see it in person. Thanks hubby for taking me! The water looks several feet low right now in the cove behind the house. I do wonder if it will be deep enough for a boat dock but I wasn't right down to the water level at the back so that would be hard for me to know for sure. They do have a walking / bike trail winding through the trees in the subdivision and I saw the gazebos in the streets. I would love to hang out or walk there. And I saw 3 other houses in the subdivision. I saw a dock from across the road, lots, lake across the road (standing in front of the house) looking across street. It sits on a pretty little cove water all around the little cove, lots of trees. Very pretty place. I was impressed. It looks like it will be an upscale place for the town. We saw several canadian geese on the property and I even spotted a grey heron standing in the water to the right lot next to the blog cabin. This home really is something special. We were the only ones there at the time: So, we thought: We stood on the road or culdesac in front of the house. Hubby Chris even took my picture standing in front of it. While we were being nosey in the front I got spooked by about 5 fisherman walking out from behind the house. Kind of scared me, I couldn't help but think they would do that when you are living there. Probably have to be watching your kids and pets and making sure the doors are locked at all times. Just in case. You just never know these days. But they just walked on past & waved. I stared on for a few minutes. Wishing it was us down there closer to the house. A fishing! (yeah right) spying! It was lightly raining and a little muddy. We didn't go down to the house, I thought that would be trespassing especially with no one there! It was alot of fun to actually be there. Yes, I liked the area, it's a very small town, Got the lake there, but we like to fish, really and we even saw the nucluer evacuation route: That freaked my 14 year old out a bit. She said it can't be safe there with that route there. She kept trying to talk us out of voting for it. You know kids. But I think that has something to do with the fact she don't want to leave home /friends! Because me and daddy said If we were lucky enough, We'd like to move there full time! (I don't think she liked that idea) The town is small but it is within a hour give or take a few minutes to Knoxville, Pigeon Forge, Seveirville Tn for the shopping, eating, and entertainment. (dollywood). But I grew up in a very small town much like the area and we always had to drive for the shopping. Didn't look like there was much to do right there. Unless you like small town atmosphere and fishing. Jobs might be hard to come by there in the home town! You would probably have to drive for work, I'm a guessing! I could be very happy there I'm sure. I can't wait for the chance to put in our vote to try to win this place it's gorgeous! I would hope we could afford to keep it. We left ok hubby drug me away, we then drove on down toward Maryville, right past last years blog cabin ( no we didn't go to it) did that last year & then drove toward Townsend then from there went into Pigeon Forge, Seveierville, Tn Stopped and buddy's bbq it was about an hours or so drive . The mountains were pretty with the fog a hanging low in the mountains. And then we come back through Knoxville on the way back to Ky. It was a long drive. Wore me out but it's quite a lovely mountainous farm area and curvy roads the way we went. I've been sick with a cold for 2 weeks so I got a little car dizzy sick. But it was a very pretty drive. I enjoyed it! The fresh air did me good as they say. We saw quite a bit of trees starting to bloom. Especially the white Bradford pears. I couldn't help but think how pretty the area has to be in the fall time. And yes BlognBob there is wild turkey 5 minutes ( we saw them in a empty field) from the blog cabin so they have to visit the cabin sometimes I'm sure. Now if we could just get an affirmative on the fireflys. Right!

hi guys so i finally saw the pics taken 3-21 and the windows in the master are non existant 2 doors are you kidding me? i knew that the plans didnt reflect some of the changes but i thought not a big deal, but they built it according to the plan. it does seem weird that this has been mentioned in the blogs and no one has addressed it yet. seems like its getting a bit late to fix it
to carrie and blogginbob, we had lighting bugs in ia when i was a kid haven't seen many lately, we now are in mnts of az, guess its too dry.
other than the window/door thing of the master. the pics are great. the lake looks so close . omg its just too pretty !!!! sure would like to see the floor plan of the basement. with this slowdialup it took me about 30 min to get thru those pics but soooo worth it .
oh before i forget godbless cabincraver and erika!

I am excited just to have the opportunity to vote for a beautiful cabin that one lucky person will win but it seems like there is a lot more complaining in the blogs then there is excitement. I don't understand why? Here is a beautiful place with lots f exceptional features and if you don't like them you can change them if you win! Good luck to everyone.

Posted by: Angela Fletcher at March 31, 2008 8:54 AM

May we have a few different photos of each of the items we're voting on. Because of the angle, I can't really see the style of roof that won. It looks just like the roof pic on the far left to me. The same for some of the other features like patio, tiles, and colors. One small photo isn't enough to see what it will look like. Thanks in advance.
Also, speakers are cheap....can we have those outside too, along with the fridge that won? Then Simon and the guys can crank some tunes and have a cold beer when it's a wrap. I think some of the "close second" votes should just be thrown in for good measure. Hehe.

Free-standing solar panels don't seem to be allowed by the Lakefront Rules & Covenants from the bits of them I have read. Solar shingles incorporated into the roof would work but they would have a lifespan of less than half of the rest of the roof and are very costly to replace compared with metal roof or cost of electricity. It's green but very inefficient costwise.

No I'm not 'that' Clive but a fellow countryman. It's a more common name across the pond.

Posted by: Clive at March 31, 2008 2:55 PM

Hi CabinCraver. Great to see you back on the blog. I hope you are rested and regaining strength. Good point on the speakers, however, I prefer just the sounds of nature down on the patio. It may be a good idea if the builders left some spare capacity in the wiring, plumbing etc to allow easy expansion of certain things if the eventual winner wanted.

Hey BlognBob I wrote a bit to you on the tip-swap chat about the Spring City water supply. However, I'll repeat it here for all to read and check if they wish.

I have found some information on the source of Spring City water supply http://gwidc.memphis.edu/website/dws/risk/GWI_Maps/Spring%20City_nomap.pdf

Erin,

Nope ! Never seen a lightning bug , except at Disneyland in the Pirates of the Carribean ride if that counts? If they have them anywhere along the Western states please someone let me know where and I will plan a special trip down there just to see em.
I lived in the Mountain areas of Washington State most of my life. And also along the Columbia River Gorge. Seen lots of Deer, Elk, Moose, Grizzley, and in Yellowstone Natl. Park and Canada, a lot more wildlife. Especially Buffalo. But I can honestly say I have never seen a wild turkey. I have seen Eagle, Osprey, Heron, and countless other birds , and we even had a turkey vulture for a pet once. But never seen a wild turkey. Lots of Racoons and Opossum but no turkey. If someone knows where in WA. these might be please let me know.
Thank You Carrie Miracle ! For breathing some relief to my soul. That there are turkey in the Watts Bar area. I can all but rest now. jk. Really, Thank You for your wonderful descriptive of the area. And confirming my concerns for others fishing in the area coming to visit. Please take care of that cold.
Again, Love all the new photos and work being done. It is so much fun to watch and talk about.

Posted by: BlognBob at March 31, 2008 3:19 PM

I see Tennessee has the 5 lowest tax burden of all states. That may help a bit with running costs of the cabin.

Posted by: Warren at March 31, 2008 3:19 PM

For those of you who think an outdoor fridge is a good substitute for a wine fridge- you would be wrong. Picture this, you are spending the weekend at your beautiful cabin on Watts Bar Lake and its winter. Lets have a bottle of wine with dinner. Do we have any in the kitchen? No, we have to go outside to the outdoor beverage fridge. And by the way, I wouldn't leave any beverages in the outdoor fridge - especially alcohol- when I'm not there. That said I appreciate that not everyone enjoys a glass of wine or any alcohol for that matter.
I voted for the outdoor speakers because they would be hardwired. Easier now than later.
And just an FYI for those of you who voted for railroad ties. They are considered toxic and it is very difficult to get rid of them. Not to mention that they rot faster than stone.

Posted by: Jenny at March 31, 2008 3:43 PM

About the fishing, at Watts Bar, are there sturgeon there? Now that is some fishing if you can catch one.
Clive , Carrie Miracle, Erin , and all. If ever in Seattle be sure to visit Pikes market. You can see the Space Needle then take the sky tram down to the market and not have to worry about parking or driving around. They also have Geoduck for sale there at the Flying fish counter. I have dug up some Geoduck in BC that make these tiny in comparison. Being a church going man of many years it is difficult to explain a Geoduck in any regards. So, I am posting a video clip from the daytime series dirty jobs which best displays a Geoduck. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raCUc5A6FHU My apologies for lack of a better way to explain.
Yes, it appears we are a little ahead of the game with the roofing aren't we? Just goes to show the DIY crew is on the job. Thank You guys !

Thank you Chris Grundy for the great slide show. Seeing all sides of the cabin gives a clearer perspective on all the possibilities for the lot. You are all doing a great job! Those doors and windows facing the lake will enhance the relaxing atmosphere within the cabin. Since the start of the Cabin Blog, I had been hoping for radiant floors throughout the house, and a gray water cistern under the ground to conserve the water during the drought season, and use that water for the shrubs, trees, flowers ect. If they do not have the radiants floors and cistern, the cabin will still be a beautiful home for one very lucky winner.

Hi All just read the new weekend blogs.
So good to hear from Ms cabincraver, thank God you are back home, been praying for you! Hope you continue to get better~ rest well!

Blognbob: NO: I have never heard of a "geoduck". I guess that animal is a northern resident! What in the world is it? I'll look it up so I can see a picture: but you got my attention again. Tell us about it.
Now Erin says she sees turkeys and fireflys in her northern woods. I wonder why you don't? Seems odd doesn't it? you guys are probably from different parts of the north though...
I'm sorry to say it but (Erin wasn't those diamond ~firefly~ rings we had so much fun glowing in the dark as a kid..) I have to admit it when my daughter was younger I taught her the diamond ring trick! She didn't enjoy as much as I did! She apparently figured out earlier than I did it's bug guts a glowing! We have most of those animals here in ky as well.
Ok blognbob: Erin and I want to know what part of the north are you from? So we can figure out the mystery of why she sees them and you don't.

And Jan from Az you are a lucky lady not having mosquitoes to bite and put itchy big sores all over you. They are a big problem in my area of ky. Some days we can't even go outside for them practally eating you alive even with bug sprays on!
Everyone is right! There most definitely are not any windows in the master bedroom side of the house and there was a single door in the mbr wall, cut out over the garage to access the decking, maybe that will be a full glass door. That would be nice in my opinion. Let in some natural light! The fan windows possibly could be cut out & added later but it just don't look like there is enough room for them to me! I agree Explanations would be nice from those in charge of the diy cabin. But as I remember the fan windows were not an option for voting and at first just an idea! But as far as I could tell for whomever was wanting to know if the cabincam was or wasn't up to date. It appeared to be right on to me. We visited the cabin this weekend. I looked at the cabincam Sunday morning and it looked exactly the same as I saw in person. So I would say it's real time info. As for the slideshows. I did see the slideshow friday night and the cement truck was on the cabincam friday afternoon. Well I'll go for now my 3 year old is getting bored with me not playing with him. Bye blogging friends for now. Have a beautiful day! We'll play later ok! BYE!!!!

Posted by: Carrie Miracle at March 31, 2008 4:18 PM

BlognBob. Wow, Geoduck, live and learn. Pease don't get me on exotic food. I am a bit like Andrew Zimmern on that. Talking of Flying Fish have you ever eaten flying fish? We used to pick them up of the deck of sailboats we rented in the Greek islands. A little flour and herb seasoning then straight into the fry pan for a minute or so. Delicious with a few wedges of lemon or lime, some coarse bread and a glass of retsina (pine resin wine). Easiest fishing I ever did. Just sunbathe and wait for them to land on the deck. Of course there was the occasional human-fish interaction if one didn't put a towel or something up as a screen. That was one way to indentify the newbies on boats - fish strike.

Hello one and all,

Let's hope April brings some nice weather to TN and the rest of us in the Southeast...it has been COLD here!

I agree about the outdoor speakers- now is the time to install them, rather than later. Music is a blessing.

I also agree that it is quite difficult to tell the best match of the roofing material to the log stain, so I am hoping for the best when voting.

Keep up the good work, DIY!

BLOGNBOB!!!! oOOOOOHH!!!!!!! GROSS!!! GEODUCKS....... I'm glad we don't have them... WHAT ARE THOSE THINGS?????? GIANT SNAILS!!!!!!!! Those videos are wild!!!!! Looks like fun hunting them though! I love that show, dirty jobs! That video just about made me puke, really!!!! As a child I thought chicken and pig cleaning was nasty! Now that looks bad !!!!! But bad looking things usually end up tasting good! if rolled in meal & ky fried in oil! (not a sushi fan here) And you all know what bad that geoduck looks like,!!! (ha ha ha) That almost needs censored!!!! (ha ha ha)

I think you'll find most outdoor fridges are on wheels. This one can be brought into the walkout basement at night or when you are away. It shouldn't be too much trouble to bring it back to the basement media room either. They are much more useful than wine fridges as they can be cold enough to keep food chilled properly and get the beer or sodas really cold. Wine fridges normally work at 50-55F which is way too warm for food and beer.

Posted by: Warren at March 31, 2008 5:05 PM

Thank you Chris Grundy for the great slide show. Seeing different sides of the cabin gives a better perpective on the possibilities for the lot outside. The doors and windows facing the lake will really enhances the relaxing atmospshere within the cabin. At the start of 2008 Cabin Blog, I suggested radiant floors throughout the whole house and also a gray water cistern system under the ground for the drought season. Since this water can be utilized, and recycled to feed the shrubs, trees, flowers ect. At any rate this cabin will certainly be a beautiful home for one lucky winner.

Posted by: Heading South at March 31, 2008 5:06 PM

BlognBob. No sturgeon I think. Big cats, trophy bass and crappies seem to be the bulk. I was wondering if there are any alligator gar up by the dam?

Posted by: Clive at March 31, 2008 5:09 PM

Hey, What is happening with all the scrap and dumpster materials? How much is being recycled?
Thanks! Becky in NC

Here are some answers to some of your questions that I am aware of.
Yes, evergreens are native to the area. There are quite a few of them around here.
And, I voted for the speakers for this reason. Sometimes, I do like to sit outside with some of my tunes on. Also, my friend has a heater, and almost never use it. You have to be right on top of it to keep warm. And, finally, I didn't choose the frig mainly because we are at a lake, and as a result, it is a bit buggy around here. Most people I know have their property sprayed for spiders, ants and so on.
On a little side note -- Katie and I took a trip over there in my friend's golf cart today on our way to feed their animals. We had to scare a couple of geese out of the road so we wouldn't run them over. So, wildlife is definitely not a problem here. LOL

Carrie,
You should've stopped by when you were there. Our house was the white house right across the street from the entrance to Lakefront Estates. Maybe it was our dock you were looking at -- we could've given you a bit of a tour of the neighborhood. Tell your daughter by law, they have to post those evacuation signs so many miles away from the dam/power plant. I am very happy with Spring City Schools too. In the high school, she would go to Rhea county High School. (The schools are run by counties here,) Tell her there are a couple of other high school girls on the street here too. And, YES, there are LOTS of fireflies here when the weather gets warm.
Helen

Posted by: Helen Miko at March 31, 2008 8:27 PM

Carrie,
I forgot to tell you that the lake is controlled by Watts Bar Dam, and they lower the lake in the winter months. I'm told that they start raising the lake the 1st or 2nd week of April. (We moved here the 19th of April last year, and it was already up to normal then.) Then, everyone puts their boats back in the water until late Oct/early Nov. when they lower the lake again. During the summer months they raise and lower the lake an inch or 2 every few days to keep the mosquitos at bay -- but nothing that interferes with the activities on the lake.
Helen

Posted by: Helen Miko at March 31, 2008 8:48 PM

Heading South,
Yes, I would also love to see radiant flooring through-out the entire house. Much more energy efficient. And I agree with you and Clive on the cistern system. Under ground just like you said.
Carrie, If properly routed the drain off from the land might also attribute to this cause as well.
Carrie Miracle,
Glad you had fun watching the (Geoduck) Gooeyduck video. Oh come on now, It's just a big clam. Tastes just like the baby clams in a can. Except you only need one to feed a family. But they can be a real bugger to dig up.
Yes Clive, as a matter of fact I have seen flying fish near the South Pacific. Never low enough to catch or eat any as I was on an Aircraft Carrier. Not much time to do much fishing then either. they do have flying fish at Pikes market too but that is something different. And I haven't had anything to drink in many years. So,
As for Gators? Doubt they're around there. Eaten some too, but never seen them in the wild either. Tastes like chicken with a lobster texture. Ate some dog in Korea too ,but I have seen a few of those around. Also ate something called balute too! But just one time..and that is a whole other food group. Perhaps not much different than attempting Haegus?
I was stationed in Florida for a short time. Though didn't have much opportunity to stray far from the base. Loved that Po Folks restaurant. Are there any in TN? Probably could've seen fireflys there but I was along the ocean.
I will have to get a few sturgeon to plant in the lake when no one is looking. And maybe some of them freshwater Geoduck that not too many know about. jk. maybe ! Anyone wants the crappie I catch I will trade you ten for one good trout or bass.
Do bug zappers help much around them parts? I heard that ticks detest anything to do with garlic. Well, I guess I am ok then! Cause it runs thru my veins. That and hot peppers.
So, what do you gather from these cam pics? I mean that front and side deck ? I guess That is it for the backfill. Except perhaps the top soil. Must have been guessing on the actual grade perhaps. I suspect Ahmed must have some different ideas.
Helen mentioned there was city water and the sewer system would be in , in the near future. I hope they will at least run the lines to the road if it is not being hooked up now. Save thousands of dollars!

Posted by: BlognBob at March 31, 2008 9:54 PM

I justed checked out the Geoduck on You Tube. I was gagging so back that my husband came running in to see if I was o.k.! When he saw it he just laughed and laughed, and said what in the world is that! That is not my kind of eating. That was gross, gross, gross. Just thinking about it makes me gag! Good night.... :-)

Hey everyone we are back from Pigeon Forge on spring break with our son. We stayed in a rental cabin as always it was very nice I always love walking into one for the first time and the smell of the wood is awesome. We saw some cabins that had wood in shape of a tree with a bear in it between the glass it was so beautiful! I hope we get to vote on a front door like that. Also wish I had known that the cabin I hope to win is only an hour away from where we were, I would've loved to go see the cabin oh and the twins in person! Just wondering does anyone know how they pick the winner?

Posted by: Mitzi at April 1, 2008 8:45 AM

Wil Webb: Sorry to tell you but Destin, FL is on the Gulf and not the ocean. I grew up near there and really loved going to Destin. I was only about 30 minutes from the gulf coast. Destin is very commercial compared to when I visited it but it is very pretty there.

Katie: The metal roofing was picked by the voters. I agree about the metal and voted for composite roofing in a shingle look. As to the colors my choice is not doing very good. The colors do match the log stain color the voters picked.

It does not look to be much work the past few days. I see the blogs have been caught up. I was wondering if anyone was reading them and approving.

I totally agree with a few others on the circle patio and drawing the eye and setting of furniture around the patio. The fan would be the best for the central or main area of the patio. I hope they do a straight path type paving or concrete the walk under the wrap around areas of the porch, sides.

I still would like to see more green items like water recovery and solar panels. I am not sure how much sun the panels would get with the trees and I bet the HOA would not allow them to be placed on front of the roof.

I like the stones because they break away from the straight lines of the cabin. I am hoping they stone the exposed basement walls.

Hi Bob. Not Alligators but Alligator gar. A huge fish found in southerly waters. They have them in Arkansas especially in dam spillways so I was wondering if they were this bit further north. Gators would be interesting though. Makes fishing and canoeing a little more exciting.

Posted by: Clive at April 1, 2008 12:22 PM

Did anyone see the story on CNN about Watts Bar being sequestered by the navy to test some new photon torpedoes? Apparently most of the lake will be closed during the summer months while they fire these things at targets towed behind boats up and down the lake.

Posted by: Clive at April 1, 2008 12:33 PM

Just to let you know, My wife and I have had a ball reading and rolling in laughter at your responses to the elusive Geoduck. I guess it is something you have to grow up with. Yep, ugly but really good eating. And yes you can bread em and deep fry them too.
Clive, I do believe Trex Deck is a sponsor given the adds on the web page. So, perhaps that is where they will be going with this. But you know the minute I say that, it will be something else. Looks like another day off for rain.
And to answer some previous questions , I live way up in the drier mountainous area now. about 4500 ft. So, we get more snow and longer colder winters than usual.
Thank You Helen! Once again. confirmed they do have lots of fireflys. Well, I am ready to move now. Cabin, Hunting, Fishing, The lake, moderate weather. Turkey and Fireflys. yep, that's it! Oh, and a kindly neighbor who bakes blueberry coffee cake. They got blueberries there too? I am sold! Now if I can find anyone who knows how to make a good rhubarb pie.

Posted by: BlognBob at April 1, 2008 2:37 PM

The cabin is looking great! I was not aware there was a nuclear power plant so close to the cabin. That is kinda scarey.

We have fireflies and all sorts of wildlife here in Mi. The further from the city you get, the more you will see. I know New Mexico has fireflies and while I'm not positive, I believe wild turkey. They also have an abundance of mosquitoes, at least in the northern part of the state.

I'm torn between an outdoor fridge and the stereo. I want both, lol. How bout they just put the wiring in for the speakers and give us the fridge. Not much point in an outdoor heater if you already have a fireplace or a firepit. Both those can be made to look very inviting. I'd love to see an outdoor shower. Nothing fancy, just somewhere to rinse off the sand and mud.

Why do some folks think that because its a cabin it should look rustic and not have many amenities? I love log cabins but I also love contemporary furnishings. I would meld the two and it would look great. I think every home should have all the amenities you can afford to put into them. Some keep trying to imply this is just a vacation home. Not true. This is a residental community. Yes, for some it will be a vacation/retirement home, but for most it will be Home.

Is a gray water system and solar panels on the roof going to be incorporated? If not, they should be. What about composite decking? Every home being built from today on should have all the latest energy savings features included. Its the responsible thing to do.

Okay Watson,
Where's our basement plans? I know I said that I wasn't going to bother you anymore about it but that has been some time ago. I know you're hiding them ! jk. It would be really nice to see them if possible.
Don't get me wrong. You have been doing an absolutely stupendous job. And deserve applause. It just would be kinda nice to see them sometime soon. I mean, if you don't mind? Oh, and think twice before going boating with Clive ok? He really likes those crocs and gators up close.

Clive,
Alligator gar? Nope , never heard of them. Are they the eating type of fish or like carp or something. Photon torpedos? Clive? Are you volunteering to drive the tow boat?

Okay, when does the next round begin? We have to get a roof on this house. All the water will be gone and nothing to fill the cistern system.

Ahh... April 1st .... good one Clive! I have missed your wit and wisdom for a few weeks, but glad to see it smiling back at us all from the Blog post below .... Perfect post on this pefectly foolish day!

Comment As Posted by: Clive at April 1, 2008 12:33 PM:
Did anyone see the story on CNN about Watts Bar being sequestered by the navy to test some new photon torpedoes? Apparently most of the lake will be closed during the summer months while they fire these things at targets towed behind boats up and down the lake.

Somebody tell Ahmed to save some of his boulders for a firepit at the end of the patio. With the outdoor heater getting voted down, there will be plenty of chilly air around these parts in the Fall and early Spring.

Posted by: katie at April 1, 2008 7:23 PM

As Evergreens are actually a part of the natural plant life for the area. A few stategically planted , and you probably would never know that house was down there from the main road. A few to each side where the neighbors might have too good a view might be nice as well. As the other developments might be clearing land , you might be able to get a lot of these for free.

Bob,
I'm not sure about the wild blueberries around here. (But, I do intend to plant a few on my property.) I planted strawberries the other day. There are a lot of wild blackberry bushes around here though. As a matter of fact, I have some good sized ones towards the front of my property in front of the ugly shed. (Which will very soon have a good coat of paint on and new doors!) LOL And, yes, I DO make a mean strawberry rhubarb pie too. Baking is my thing.
As for the lake not being able to be used this summer -- I just called a friend who would know who is an engineer at Watts Bar, and he told me that isn't so. He said that wouldn't be physically possible with the work being done there upgrading the 2nd silo. Time will tell... I'll keep you up to date with that.

Just a quick comment on the outdoor heater option...it gets very cool in the mountains when the sun goes down and this is a nice option to have...less work than the fireplace which I believe is on the other side?

Hi Fellow Bloggers,
Looks like they haven't had the greatest weather to work on the cabin. We are still getting snow, rain and wind in MI. By the way, thanks for the info on the weather and snow. I still want to know why the cement truck was in the cam picture. Is that where the patio will be?
Cabincraver - SO glad to read that you are home. Take care of yourself and get all the rest that you need to get well.
Carrie - thanks for the awesome description of the cabin and town. Now I really have a great feel for the place.
Lastly, we do have fireflies in southern Michigan. My yard looks like a lit up Christmas tree every night by mid summer.
April is finally here so spring in right around the corner!!

ERIN, MARY FROM TEXAS AND CLIVE!!! Hi guys, so good to be back. REALLY GOOD! I can sit here about one more minute so Erin, take a look at my blog on the 28th at 11:39 a.m.; along with others you are specifically mentioned.

I have really missed you guys!

Clive, you are right as usualy about the peace and quiet of nature's music; I was thinking more about the cabin warming and snacks, goodies, music, etc. Since so many are invited it would be great to have some extra wiring left for things such as outdoor speakers, etc. That was a great idea. I do love firepits, because I love a flickering flame with a chair pulled up to it...or a log or whatever is handy. I think my time is up and I must go down. I am slow at typing these days. Everything I've voted on is winning except the speakers, but as Clive pointed out maybe the best item is not the speakers if we can get Watson and Ahmed to put a word in about some extra wiring???!!!

Good night friends, and MAY THE WORTHIEST BLOGGER WIN!

Cabincraver2008 herself. Erika said to tell all of her friends "howdy".

Posted by: Cabincraver2008 at April 1, 2008 9:32 PM

Dear Bobblog, My husband is famous around here for his strawberry/rhubarb pies. They are insanely delicious!

We have lovely fireflies too! All the pilgrims took away our wild turkeys long ago!!! The deer are plentiful tho, even in Virginia Beach! We are about 2 hours north of NC's Lost Colony. We believe the mosquitoes there, picked up the colonists and carried them away, then came here!

If you win, invite my hubby and I down, we will bring a pie!! If we win, come for a visit and hubby will make pies!!!

Have fun blogging,

Patty in Virginia

The cabin is looking great! I have been trying to find the technical aspects of it ie type air conditioning, light switch, sensors, intercom, etc and have not been able to locate a page that easily identifies those that will be used. Any chance of getting a list for items such as these?

I would hope that a geothermal airconditioning system would be used and maybe even a well for watering the lawn, instead of drinking water.

I appreciate the team and all you guys have done to accomadate us....your greatest critics!

Thanks, DIY, for the new screen showing voting results. It is nice to easily see how many votes have been cast for each choice.

A word on nuclear power plants...the Chartlotte NC area is serviced by two at the present time and the population is growing and thriving (including my family for the past 10 years). Duke Energy plans another, probably in Cherokee County SC in the next few years. Gotta do it, friends. It really helps with energy costs and the technology is constantly being upgraded.

About the patio heater and fireplace, you actually do need both. The fireplace is great if you are fairly close, but the heater provides another source of heat for those not directly in front of the fireplace. The choices we have been provided, in every category, are excellent. Not necessarily what I would have chosen on my own, but nothing to complain about at all. Ted

Okie Dokie, I have a MAC and I can't seem to get to the chat. Does anyone have any ideas for me? Also........ The cabin looks great !! Does anyone know for sure about the deck material? ie. TREX TREX TREX !!! The lightening bugs are beautiful for all of ya'll who never get to see them. They usually start coming out sometime during May. They are such a treat to see. Once again, will someone help me to get to the chat room?
Thanks !!

I like Mitzi's suggestion for a stone veneer of the exposed parts of the basement walls. It is a special type of basement construction with the built-in waterproofing etc. but I'm sure the DIY people can do it. There must be a local stone merchant supplying stone of a type the TVA would approve.

Did I catch anyone with the photon torpedoes yesterday?

Posted by: Clive at April 2, 2008 11:35 AM

Is the garage going to be in the basement? I hope not, that would be a huge waste of living space. I say build it to the side of the house, make it a two story so it will have a bonus room over it. I would worry that somehow fumes could get into the rest of the home if the garage was part of the basement. It could always be built slightly away from the house with an enclosed breezeway to the house and the bonus room could then be turned into guest quarters/inlaw suite/just graduated, but still poor, kid space. A much better design in my opinion. ;)

My dear Cabinhuggers....A warning today about an awful computer virus...I checked this on Snopes myself & this is a real virus. Please Be Careful!

Anyone-using Internet mail such as Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL and so on.

You may receive an apparently harmless e-mail titled 'Mail Server Report'

If you open the file, a message will appear on your screen saying:
'It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful.'

Subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC, And the person who
sent it to you will gain access to your name, e-mail and password.

This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon.
AOL has already confirmed the severity, and the anti virus software's
are not capable of destroying it.

The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself 'life owner'.

If you wish to confirm the report for yourself: http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/mailserver.asp

I am home from Houston, I loved seeing my son and helping him get settled in his mew home but I did miss the blog!
I agree with the outdoor speakers and have been voting for them from the start. I sure hope the voting swings around so the cabin will be prewired for the speakers at least.
The door opening on the master bedroom side looks so odd. I pray they can make it a window like Darlene had said.
I love reading the blog from everyone but the ones that live just makes my heart soar, thanks.

Hey, they are actually building the deck on the other side of the house ! Didn't appear to be a work day at first.
New Mexico has fireflys? I guess we will have to make a trip there some time in the near future. I didn't think anywhere on the western half had any. I have only been thru a corner of NM. on one of our trips. Pretty hot down around there. Oh, I have seen plenty of skeeters. No special visits to see them.
Alligator gar. Holy Crap ! I am not swimming in the same water as those things. I looked them up on the web. Sturgeon are about the same size, and quite bigger at times. But they don't have the head and teeth of an alligator.
We had the rail ties at our house . They do hold up relatively well , but the creosote smell and that black ooze during the hot summer months.
You know if you get the rocks wet then spray them with buttermilk. All sorts of lichen will form rather quickly . Making them appear as if they have been there for a long time. Not sure about the smell , but I think it wouldn't last too long being outside.

Hi again Bloggers!
I had better explain that I am not a Spring City local, yet. We bought just under 2 acres on the lake last year and are in the process of building a small house there for the time being, then when we retire in 5-6 years we plan to build our "dreamhouse" with the proceeds from the sale of our current home in Tampa Bay. But we travel up there fairly often, and I like to learn as much as possible about places I visit...but even more so since we plan to live there! Carrie Miracle, those fisherman don't warrant fear, check the crime stats for the area, numbers so low it's amazing to think that communities like this still exist in this day and age. I'm so in love with the area that I have to try hard to not sound like a promoter for the tourist board!

Also, Watts Bar Nuclear has been up and running for quite a few years, they are now beginning work on the second half of the plan, much of which is already built. The nuclear energy plants of today are a world away from the Three Mile Islands and Chernobyls of the past. I know those Evac Route signs may be a bit disconcerting at first, but I drive Hurricane and Flood evac routes all the time here in FL, can't say they even cause a twinge of anxiety nowadays!

Been packing boxes all day. Kept cheerful by thinking what it will be like to UNPACK them all up in Spring City in a few months!

Regards,
Sheila

I just had a weird thing happen. I haven't had my computer on all day until now and as I got half way through the voting I got a message saying I could only vote once a day. So today I didn't get a vote. What's up with that?

Watson - you aren't responding to our questions again!!! Can you let us know what is going on with the changes to the cabin and why they happened - yes I'm like a bad penny that won't go away until I get an answer!!!

Watson: Hello Erin - you are right, I'm sorry I haven't jumped in with any specifics. Still waiting on official word from the builders - haven't wanted to put my foot in my mouth. Thanks for your patience!

I love that you listed what we would be voting on next week - more great choices again - will be interesting to see what everyone chooses for the lake toy and the type of outside furniture. If you missed it seeing this it is at the top of the page for the totals on the votes page. Not sure how long it has been there but saw it tonight.

Cabincraver2008 it is so good to hear that you are home once again!!! Glad to hear this great news but be sure to obey doctors orders and don't over do it we don't want you ending back in the hospital. Say HI! to Erika - I am sure she is trilled that you are home once again. Let her know I did see her message on the other page.

Blognbob - now my cousins were from Washington State and they knew about fireflies so what's up with you????? My cousins also saw wild turkeys!!!! Maybe it was because they spent time back East (Massachusetts) with us and we educated them. And as soon as you talked about Geoduck I just knew it had to be fish! lol My least favorite food - I do not eat shell fish what so ever (hate it!). And there are not many fish that I actually will eat - I am the oddball in the family who all love shell fish!!!! But I still love to fish (I throw them back).

Haven't been on since Monday - started a new job so I have been busy with work - putting in long hours and not home until 6p or later. Will catch up on the blogs on Saturday again since it is now 9p.

Take care all and check out the new items that we will be voting on next week!!!

Hi Fellow Bloggers,
Is anyone else having trouble voting? Also, at the very last second, the screen flashed what looked like new items, such as cabinet hardware. Was I just seeing things or should I get the old computer to the shop. Haven't seen my last blog either. At least I can look at the old pictures from the cam.
THe sun is shining here today! Happy Spring to all.

BlognBob,
If you want a wonderful rhubarb pie recipe, see below. My mother always made it for my dad (t is his favorite). Everyone (who liked rhubarb that is) raved about it. There is no strawberries involved. According to my dad, that is the quickest way to wreck a good rhubarb pie.

Mary Ann's Rhubarb Pie:
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 TBSP flour
1/4 tsp salt
2 TBSP melted butter or margarine
1 egg
4 cups rhubarb cut into one inch pieces

Cream together sugar, flour, salt, butter and egg.
Spread rhubarb in a 9 inch pie pan.
Spread the mixture evenly over the rhubarb, cover with top crust.

Bake in a hot oven 425 degrees for 45 minutes.

P.S. According to my mom and dad, you keep this amount of sugar, and then sprinnke sugar on top to taste while eating. This allows for the varying sweetness of rhubarb.

Hope you enjoy it!

Like the sneak peek of the upcoming voting categories: hardware pulls, outdoor furniture (South Haven v Ash Lawn), Adirondack vs rocker (rockers are more traditional to this part of the country), outdoor green feature, lake toy.

But, please, please, please, can't we have at lest both the composter & the rain barrel? Solar lights are good too.

Waiting to see what these lake toys look like: "Vertig Water Park", "Tropic Cabana Islander", "Emperor Island Party Lounge", "Triumph eck Rider Towable", "Big Brawler Towable", & "Sonix 3 Towable"

May have to google the names & see if I can find them

Whoopee.......it's coming along, how exciting!! I've been bedridden for over a week and this is my first chance to catch up and I can't believe how far the cabin has come, all the new photos are great. Now we can see from the lakeside and the frontside, everyone's doing a great job with all the different angles instead of just the cam camera. The lake views from inside the cabin are beautiful, it looks so peaceful and welcoming. I'm still hopeful that the cabin will be wheelchair ready when it's time to move in, hee, hee. Like everyone else I'm dreaming and until all my tests are done I've got plenty of time to do so. The pictures make it so much easier, either my dreams are getting more vivid or my meds are really working. The voting choices are fun and I love reading all the blogs and ideas. Everyone has their opinions and the majority of cabin lovers are so nice and would welcome everyone to stop by, I know we would. I can't wait to see the porches built so I can dream of where to put the oak swing, rocking chairs, checkerboard game, and all the fun stuff, even the hot tub. I know we can't win everything but we can buy whatever we don't get, part of the fun will be adding our own touches. We were married in Gatlinburg, went to Dollywood, Dixie Stampede, etc., the area is just beautiful and we've been there in the heat of the summer and the snow in the winter. We have relatives not too far and I know the Grandkids would have so much fun there too. The memories in a cabin are so special, this would be home not just for vacations. I wonder how the canoe Amy donated is coming along, it sure will be fun on the lake. For those who haven't seen a real gator while boating - come to Florida, we see them all the time. You can go where the water is dark and it's eerie at times with the moss hanging off the old gnarled trees and see the gators eyes just above the water as they swim along or sunning off to the side. If your on the Silver River you'll not only see gators but you'll see wild monkeys too. When the old Tarzan movies were filmed in Silver Springs some monkeys got way and after years of breeding they're all over the place (don't anchor your boat too close to shore while enjoying your chip & dip, they'll be swinging from the trees trying to climb aboard. The cutest are the Mommy's with their babies clinging on, so cute. The water is crystal clear, you can see to the bottom, it's beautiful. The funniest part is an area roped off for swimmers (somebody please explain how a gator knows not to go under the rope)????? I'm ready for a lake and sipping sweet tea on a porch waving to the boaters. Well, the pain's let up so it's time to dream some more, best wishes to everyone and good health to all.

As for the supposed drought here-- Well, all it has been doing is raining lately. UGH!!! The only day this entire week that didn't rain was yesterday. And, between today and tomorrow, we are supposed to get another 3-4"!! Since they tell us we are still 2" behind for the year, that should definitely catch us up in anyone's book. So, any of you who were worried about the drought factor here in TN, fear no more. I could really use a bit of sunshine to plant my flowers.

Posted by: Helen Miko at April 3, 2008 12:35 PM

Is someone on vacation? No blogs posted for a couple days...

Well, I have a general question- does this log home need a "drying time" before the windows can be installed. Someone I know is building a log home and they were told they can't install windows for a while (can't remember the exact amount of time) so the logs can dry or there could be a mold issue. Is this a common step with log home building? Just curious...

Hi to All,
I've missed all of you,it seems like forever. The rain continues to fall here in MO.putting my phone lines out.I'm trying to play catch up today.
First, the new voting results page is great I like getting to see the numbers. Thanks DIY.
Maybe that will ease Sleepless in Seattles'mind.I have noticed that once a choice takes the lead it seems impossible to change the front runner.
Next a great big thanks to Sheila for being our eyes to the area.I feel sure your info is appreciated by many of us bloggers.
Carrie Miracle, How lucky are you! getting to see and hear the site of the cabin. you go girl.

knew something was up...was hoping you weren't sick... or had a problem at your home with all the storms going through...

Understand also that until they tell you .... you can't tell us what they are doing on the cabin changes... Thanks for responding...
Tell then that we want to see you on the TV when they start showing the actual building of the cabin..... we want to see waht you look like...

Cabincraver glad you are back home and that you can at least touch base with us....

I agree with you on the speakers...
on the new items I saw on the tally list...
why can't we have rockers on the balcony and anarondock (sp??) chairs on the patio... best of both worlds... :-)

Glad to see CabinCraver back with us. Take it easy, save your strength for the contest to win this beautiful cabin. The most important thing is that you are blogging and reading things with us again. Let's keep pushing for additional wiring both normal power and low voltage for computer, hifi, satellite etc. The more that's run now the better. The same goes for water pipes including a pot filler spigot in the kitchen over the cooker to make things easier for those huge cauldrons of pasta our kids consume.

I hope I made a few people smile with the photon torpedoes. I nearly disbelieved BlognBob's Geoduck but, disgusting as it was, it was real.

Good to see Whatson is about and seems to have tackled the blog gremlin today.

I see the decking is already in place (something composite I hope). I expect it will be Trex as they sponsor DIY but I still recommend CorrectDeck if anyone else has this type of 1st floor deck and usable space underneath. Maybe Trex has a system like it now for keeping the underneath completely dry but it's not on their webpage.

One other thought on the outdoor speakers. Sound travels a very long way and very well over water. Outdoor speakers, even when turned low, may become a nuisance to people across the lake (as could any noise I suppose) but at ground level, pointing out, they could be real potential problem if anyone cranked them up even a little.

I was looking at the new (as yet not accessible) voting options to come and one section looked like lake floating toys; the sort one tows behind speed boats etc. (not photon torpedo targets). Part of me says YAHOO! as we love them. However, there is another part that says OH NO! As an environmentalist (amateur), fisherman and canoeist these things are some of the biggest nuisances ever invented and potentially very dangerous to other water users if in irresponsible hands. Maybe Helen Miko knows what regulations there are on Watts Bar governing these.

Lastly, as this is all hypothetical at present, I would want both rain barrels (more than one) and compost, not an either/or option and preferably an underground rain/grey water cistern. Solar lights are OK but they disintegrate very easily in the blades of a ride-on mower!! We used to have some before the ride-on 'ate' them. Apart from that I just never really saw why we had them. They gave a sort of welcoming pinpoint of light but were not really useful for anything else. Pretty but not too functional. My kids much prefer the ones we have now, up in the bushes that change color and are shaped like butterflies and flowers. At least they do something.

Posted by: Clive at April 3, 2008 6:27 PM

Helen--you may be caught up for the year...but around here we are still MANY inches down, though we are on target for THIS year. In other words, we've had normal rainfall since January one, but finished the last calendar year 10" down, and under stage three water restrictions. Please send any excess rain to NC!

I'm so happy you are home Cabin Craver. Hope you feel stronger daily.

Dear Blognbob, while I do not live in TN, I am in KY and they are fairly similar. There are wild blackberry bushes and wild turkey and dear. there are also bears and plenty of good eatin fish. Nothing like good ol' fried catfish, as my grandpa would say. But bass and trout are mighty good too. Gar, can be big and nasty, some can get to over 5 feet long and have sharp teeth. But I don't know whether or not TN has that type or not. I don't think that gar are fished for for food, but are fished as sport. There are several types of gar and they are located in many different parts of the world and in the south. My momma used to make rhubarb pie when I was young, I remember it being very tart and delicious. But in the south you have to have a good ol' Blackberry cobbler warm out of the oven and with some vanilla ice cream on top. MMMMMMummm, now that's good. Yes there are PO Folks restaurants in the south, I'm almost positive there is one near Knoxville and Gatlinburg. About the Gooeyducks(not sure if that's spelled right), I saw them once on a show called dirty jobs(Great Show), they didn't look to appetizing, but if they taste like clams, then I might like them. I love sea food. Maybe you could send out some good recipes.

SNAP! I can't keep up reading with you all.
I really wanted to see the speakers installed. Just because I like the speakers doesn't mean I like it loud. I love nature too. But, sometimes I'd like to hear my Frank Sinata and Dean Martin music with a glass of wine while I relax on the patio looking out at the lake. And, I'm younger than you might think. You'll regret not having the speakers installed during the framing stage. How about those sports games too.

Adele, I'm a composter too, I'd love to see the composter of any size added.
This is fun DIY, thank you for letting us add our 2 cents.

Oh man, I was going thru withdrawls waiting for the blogs to come back up. Whew! Thank You our Dear Watson !

Wow ! Rhubarb bonanza ! Helen, I will definetely come to see you often if we win , now that you mentioned making a mean rhubarb pie. Are there any deer or elk on Piney Isle ? Wouldn't mind hunting there if legal.
Patty in VA. Your husband is a man after my own heart. Makes an excellent strawberry rhubarb pie. You got it ! Come on over if I win and vice verse. You bet. As long as he can show me his recipe.
Sharon in Wa. Thank You so much for taking of your time to put this recipe on the blog. That was so nice. Already got it down. And Thank You for that hint about sprikling the sugar on top too. Invitations to you and all as well. You know Sharon, I had to call my Mom to see if she was playing games with me on the blog. She has the same name as you.
Colleen,
Rhubarb bars? That sounds really nice ! I will have to try that. My Dad also loves rhubarb pies. My Grandma used to make them for us every Thanksgiving. Good stuff ! And my Great Aunt, her sister still makes the same as her. She lives down near to Kansas City KS. I think in her 90s now.
Erin, I did know "about" fireflys, but honestly, I have never seen them. Or wild turkey. I have only been to Chicago and Florida. Though I never really considered FL East as much as it is south. I think your cousins must be talking about what they remember from visits. And about the Geoduck, well..can't blame you by looking at these beasts for not wanting to try a delectable bite. jk. My wife doesn't care for sea food or fish either. Go figure!
You know, I think it would be really nice if they might install built in blowers into the fireplace. I have seen it quite a bit around here.
And perhaps a small built in stone oven for the outside. Now wouldn't that be a tease for baking home made bread with the neighbors close by. Almost like that torture of a back yard barbeque. Just a little extra configuring of the layout of the rocks and bricks your would think.
Glad you are back Cabincraver ! There are a lot of good folks that have been thinking about you. I have been too.
Thank You Watson for that update ! I undertand !

Why hard wiring for speakers? Why not get DIY to include a pair or even 5 wireless speakers? There are rechargable and mains power driven wireless speakers from Sony (probably others too) that could do the job and being portable could easily be positioned in different places depending on how you want the sound configured at any particular time.

Posted by: Clive at April 3, 2008 9:56 PM

We get a lot of fireflies up here in Wisconsin. In summer the kids catch them in mason jars and see if they can get enough to make a lantern. Occasionally, on a good night they may catch a coupe of hundred which, in a jar under the bed covers, can be great fun for them. They even try to read books by firefly light which is pushing it a bit, but their eyes are sharper than mine. We, the parents, usually have to release the captives after the children have fallen asleep.

A less firefly-friendly game is to squidge them and smear the goop on their faces so they glow in the dark. It works quite well but is not too good for the poor firefly.

Hi Fellow Bloggers,
Muse - thank you so VERY much for the virus warning. I've had one before and it cost $300 to fix my computer.
Anyone else having trouble with voting? I start to vote and the screen goes blank and returns to the home page. Could be my server or PC. Is the cam shuf off for a couple days, or am I not receiving the pictures properly?
I love the idea of the brick facing on the exposed basement walls. Maybe they could muster up enough of the local rock to attach.
Enjoy the weekend!

Ahmed Hassan: Luci, the cam suffered from an accidental, electrical change (rented power). All is back in action and this won't happen again. We hope!
As far as using the native/natural stone for the exposed basement, there is really not enough of these pieces in the right size and shape to do this all the way around the house. I've been toying with this idea from the beginning. It's getting down to where I am ready to get on an excavator and round up precisely what is on our site so that me and all of the other folks involved can figure out where to use what. Keep in touch!

Been away for awhile. Wow!! The builder has really made some great progress. Hope the rain doesn't put to much of a damper on things. Well Watson thanks for the great pics and all your hard work keeping everyone in line.

Hi Jan (April 2)

Sorry.... Does Not appear that a conventional (chain link) dog run will be permitted.

I have included the information from the Convenants and Restrictions about fences and such for you so that you can get an idea of what can be installed. I do remember reading somewhere, perhaps in the document (I'll search for it) that "invisible fences" for pets could be installed and were encouraged by the developer. And, if memory serves me, there was some information on a company that offered such containment systems in a post not too long ago. (BlognBob ~ did you supply a website address about invisible fences? Or maybe Clive or Kim Mc. --Maybe you could post the info again -Thanks)

Until then, here's the portion of the C&R for your review, Jan...
Section 10 Walls and Fences: In general, walls and fences are not encouraged within Lakefront Estates Subdivision, as they are often contrary to the architectural and landscaping concepts as well as the sense of community that is promoted at Lakefront Estates. Hedges, berms, and other landscape alternatives are preferred. However, in keeping with the desire of some Owners who may want to have swimming pools or gardens (as applicable), walls and fences will be permitted on a restricted basis that will not detract from the overall appearance. Construction of walls and fences will only be of wood, masonry, wrought iron (including stone, stucco and brick), or masonry and wrought iron used in concert. Picket fences including white four board vinyl may also be permitted if they are in keeping with the approved architectural design of the Structure and landscaping for a particular Lot.

Chain-link fences are prohibited except around tennis courts with the prior written approval of the A.C.C. No wall or fence of any kind shall be erected, maintained, or altered on any Lot without the prior written approval of the A.C.C. of plans and specifications for such walls and fences. No wall or fence over five (5) feet in height shall be permitted except for special conditions approved by the A.C.C. In general, it is encouraged that no wall or fence shall extend forward at the rear corner of the house.

Hi guys I missed you all. Getting out last weekend, seeing all the trees a blooming gave us spring fever pretty bad. Come back home & realized it's time to spring clean every thing! We had the winter lazies on pretty bad! So we have been very busy a spring cleaning the house. Started in the living room and then as luck would have it; our heat pump is slowing down in the cooling department; had to call mr heat pump man to come fix it and we figured as it is still cool up there! It would be a great time to clean him a path to the unit. Ok it was emabarrassing! You would not believe the trash that was up there in that attic. Glad it's gone (diy).... Yay! We finally got that done took all day. Found some lost treasures! And as addicted that I too am to the blog cabin blog, it is the sweetest reward for me to finally get to sit down and catch up on everybody blogs and the cabin. The porches are looking just relaxing and the peaks on the front are getting framed in. Please consider a built in desk with shelves in one and a dresser or storage bench in the other one to the front. I know the tub or shower looks like it will be in the back peak upstairs. However I missed the sneak peaks for next week. Or I can't figure out where they are!

Hi Helen Miko If I had known I were cordially invited to stop by. I would have stopped by there faster than you could've got blognbob's pie out of the oven, dream neighbor you are! You are a lucky lady to live there. I really liked the area alot. I remember seeing a white house close to the entrance there and a boat house to the left behind & in the water also. The other dock I saw was in the subdivision. If you are standing in front of the blog cabin with your back to it and looking across the street and little cove you see a big graded off lot across to the left Looks like they might be trying to build and the dock is kind of toward the right there. It may have been the community boat dock for the subdivision. You have a lovely place. Thank you very much.. I figure the nuclear plant is safe enough (but my daughter well she still isn't too convinced) I tried to explain to her it was safe, It's been there for years and never heard of any problems with it and people wouldn't live there if it was unsafe. The evac route was there just in case. As for the winter lowering of the lake they do that at Lake Cumberland near us too! That's good I was worried it would be shallow there. Raining alot here in ky too! You said there was blackberry bushes there. As a kid we put cream and sugar on ours. Yummy! I love to pick & eat'em right off the vine.

Blognbob Thanks I did enjoy your gross clammy buddy geoduck. My husband did too! He laughed till he nearly cried at the guts part: me, well I about puked again....for the repeat! You showed me the perfect diet food. watch the video again, get sick stomach and think twice before putting any food in your mouth for a good hour!
You and clive just crack me up!

Mitzi sorry you missed the house, that happened to me last year. We went to the Smokies then I found out where blogcabin 1 was! We live a couple hours away so we drove back a few weeks later. I hope you live close enough where you can drive back to see! I'm pretty sure they pick by a computerized drawing similar to the dream home thing... I love staying in the Smokies too! My favorite vacation spot! So much to do there! You should try Oakhaven Resort, nice clean log cabin rental community!! Where did you stay? If they will let us tell each other!
When we got a little time to just drive around there we like to go and look at the vacation cabin communtities there!

Luci I believe the cement truck was pooring cement in the basement floors look at the slide shows!

A muse thanks for the virus warning for everyone...

Sheila you are a lucky girl you have land~ home in this sweet town already waiting on you. I figured the fisherman were harmless! I guess I was spooked because they caught me snooping, and they popped out from behind the house just about the time I popped around the vehicle. I just thought if I lived there and was walking through the back of the house it would spook me. But I figured they would be ok. They did throw a quick wave and keep on walking. Just being careful! You are right looked like a very safe place to me! It was probably neighbors or maybe even some of the diy house crew. I didn't see a vehicle or even see them at first and they were at the water's edge behind the house and I was up on the road next to the potties, When I saw them, so even if it were Chris, Simon, Ahmed, Watson or Amy or ? I wouldn't have even known it! That really would have been my luck! Hey! what if I was looking right at them and didn't even know it! That really would be my luck!

WATSON was that you fishing & spooking me? You told Barbara you have been on haitus!

Misty or Rich hope you feel better and I love the Monkey story...I know your family would love the area! Mine does!

Sammie thanks honey I did go girl and I feel blessed my husband did take me to see the cabin! It was a long round trip from ky but fun to see in person!

Well I'm sorry if this blog is too long for some of you I missed everybody it's been a few days since I blogged! Wow have I been on here for a while, I gotta get up early too! I can't believe it I actally got to sit here and no interuptions.. Yes! other than the weather radio flash flood warnings for counties near by! See I would've been awake anyway!
Seeing the blog cabin, inspired me to get up off my winterized bottom and spring clean my little house up so when the warm and dry weather finally does get here. I can enjoy it. And just maybe if it's me, Who gets lucky! I won't have any junk to go through! Just joking! I like: Mrs cabincraver hopes that the worthiest blogger wins. No joking, my house really needs a good cleaning and it's finally gonna get it!

Here's hoping the sun will shine bright for some of us tomor today!
Good Night!!!!!!

I really like the vote count :-) The cabin is beautiful! What fun to watch it coming to life!

Posted by: Elaine at April 4, 2008 2:08 AM

Hey, When will we get to vote on something new....I feel I've been voting on roof colors that I don't really care for forever! I voted the other night and the results popped up briefly showing items with no votes that have not yet been offered up to be voted on. Let's move on...they'll be roofing soon so I'm sure that the color has been decided....Are you sure the roofing examples shown are for metal roofs? How booring are those colors! I had hoped for a glorius green or an blazing blue or even a righteous red....not the same booring colors you see everyday in every neighborhood....muddy browns and gruesome grays.

Posted by: Becky at April 4, 2008 2:12 AM

I have only blogged on here one time before when the cabin was in the early stages. I have spent most of my morning reading these. Like everyone else our dreams get the best of us and we all wish this could be OUR cabin. What a wonderful place for the winner. Great memories will be made there, and it will be a beautiful place when it is finished. It is great to see how far it has come, and how excited everyone is. I truly don't think that there has been a poor decision made yet in the voting. As many of us have said, would you really care if something you voted for wasn't there if you won? Didn't think so!!

I am wondering too about the basement plans. That will create so much more living space, have we been able to see any of that yet, or is that still to come? Just curious.

Good luck to all bloggers and cabin lovers!

so good to hear from cabincraver!!! god bless you and family.
im a little behind so actually got to see the green home thing today. would be sooo nice to have some of that conservation, water, energy ect incorporated into this house. it just seems like the most ethical thing to do.
helen glad to hear from you as well. we dont get to plant here until may. very short growing season. but rhubarb does well. esp in the mountains!!! actually silerton co has a rhubarb festival yrly. my rhubarb is starting to peek out.
rhubarb pie its not just the filling you need the best pie crust. an art that is disappearing
well all have a good weekend.

Welcome home Cabincraver!...so good to hear that you are improving. You are in my prayers. Luci, there have been some technical problems with the voting, I am sure that will be cleared up soon. Helen Miko, Where is the closest hospital? What is the name of the hospital and how many miles is it from the cabin? I was surprised to hear about the ticks being bad. Several bloggers talked about the drought, and dry land. Tics really multiply in hot, humid, wet soil, not so much in dry soil. At any rate, I am sure you are right about the ticks. I also wanted to know where would be the closest boarding stable in the area? Would you know approximately how much boarding is running in your area. I am sure horses are not allow within the development. I've always had my horses with me, so that would change for me.
:-( I love that wrap around deck! I would really like to know the square footage of the garage/basement. It looks like it would equal to the same square footage of the first floor, but I am not sure. By the way, Sharon, you made my mouth water with your Rhubarb Pie Recipe. Thanks! I will try it. I have two large Rhubarb plants that produced alot of Rhubarb stalks. The Rhubarb is always a beautiful red. I use more sugar in my Rhubarb pie, however less sugar is good all the way around.

Keight, Thanks so much for your info on fences. My dogs now have a six foot fence...and they have learned that if they jump high and fast enough they can bypass an invisible fence. Although my dogs are harmless, they'd probably lick you to death!! I love the cabin, but I love my dogs more. I am not going to even enter this contest, so maybe one of our fellow bloggers can win it.
Maybe I can be invited for a day by the winner???

Jan in AZ april 4.
Have you tried an invisible electronic fence for your dogs? Ther are some excellent ones about. The previous owners of our house had 3 very big dogs (doberman, shepherd and rottweiller) and had an electronic fence installed. The dogs learned very quickly not to go beyond.

Dear A. Muse at April 2, 2008
Your warning is partially correct. However, there no virus within the email that can destroy your computer. The words 'It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful.' is taken from the hoax virus known as the 'Life is beautiful' hoax. The email that Snopes has confirmed the amalgamation of this and the 2006 'Mail server report' worm - which is real- (also known as the Warezof worm). This is a mass mailing worm and is easily detected and destroyed by most anti-virus programs as it's been around for a couple of years. I have seen the 'Mail Server Report' thing a number of times so I asked a buddy who is well up in bank internet security. He confirmed what I have written.

What someone has done is add a known 'worm' into a hoax email about a hoax virus in the hope of getting the 'worm' to circulate again.

Motto of the story is NEVER open emails from an unknown source and AALWAYS keep your anti-virus up-to-date.

Posted by: Warren at April 4, 2008 2:41 PM

Colleen, the 'virus thing' is a mixture of urban myth and fact. Fact is viruses exist - myth is that every warning concerns a 'real' virus no matter where the warning is supposed to have come from.

A myth surrounding the people who create viruses is that they do it to draw attention to themselves from the computer companies who then give them highly paid jobs to write anti-virus software. The fact is that this is a federal crime and is treated like terrorism. Hackers and creators of malicious software often find themselves sewing mailbags rather than living the high life. This doesn't deter many or quash the myths, which says a lot about some peoples perceptions of reality.

Hi Lynne (April 2)
You were inquiring as to the reason the garage is below the house. The 2008 Blog Cabin is being constructed in Lakefront Estates in Tennessee. COVENANTS And RESTRICTIONS have been written and approved that dictate all aspects of the home building and landscaping of the lots and common areas in Lakefront Estates.
Early in the Blog, a statement was issued by Barna Log Homes: It was discovered that the San Jacinto Plan (The Voting Choice Winner) would not fit on Lot 5, if it was built as planned with a detached garage (with a breezeway between the two structures). Once Barna Log Homes realized this, they did not abandon the popular choice but made modifications to the plan so that the Voters’ Choice could indeed go forward. The original cabin was to have a crawl space rather than full basement. Barna Log Homes’ solution to add a full basement allowed them to use some of the area for the required two car garage. This modification not only accomplished the objective of meeting the requirements of the community and the approval of the A.C.C. but also added a bonus area that will be built out as a “man cave” which was again, a voters’ choice winner in a recent round of voting. (Some other modifications that were mentioned do seem to have fallen by the wayside, and Watson is checking into the reasons why, but as everyone seeems to agree, the Blog Cabin will be a wonderful home for the winner, just as it is being built.)
Rather than direct you to an earlier post, I have included a section of the Covenants and Restrictions in place at Lakefront Estates about home size and garages. (A.C.C. stands for Architectural Control Committee and it is a group of people selected by the developer to oversee the strict adherence to the C & R as written with a few exceptions. A section within the C & R document does give the A.C.C. the authority and duty to review each plan on a Lot/house by Lot/house Basis, and, if needed, make some allowances, at their discretion, if deemed necessary for the good of the development.)

1. Multi-level houses will be considered on an individual basis by the Architectural Control Committee (A.C.C.), but shall have a minimum of 2600 square feet heated living area, not including the basement area.
2. All houses Must Have a minimum two-car garage that will accommodate at least two LARGE SIZE automobiles. Garages shall open toward the side or rear of the house unless otherwise approved by the A.C.C... Detached garages will only be permitted with the prior written approval of the A.C.C... All garage doors must be located at the side or rear of the dwelling (or detached buildings if allowed and approved) and emphasis will be given to insure that garage doors will not face streets. No trailer, trailer house, boat , or recreational vehicle shall be parked on any Lot, except within the enclosed garages erected in accordance with the plans and specifications submitted to and approved by the A.C.C.. Garage doors shall be kept in working order and shall be kept closed when not in use.

Hope this information clears up the garage placement issue for you and any others who may be new to the blog or missed the previous posts and have questions.

Just a quick note to say it is great to see your posts appearing again, CabinCraver 2008. I don't want you to tire yourself out, so, if you can only just say Hi to us every couple of days, that will still be great. And longer posts will be the icing on the cake! Or... maybe like ice cream served alongside all the rhubarb pies being baked since yummy recipes started being posted in response to BlognBobs request!

And to Carrie Miracle and Helen Miko --- WOW!!!!! … Cannot begin to tell you how much I enjoyed the “tour” of the area and the Cabin through your eyes. Reading your posts was like I was right there seeing it all up close and personal …. Thank you, thank you, and thank you.

We are such a grand group and everyone adds so much to the experience! It is so nice to be back again reading and keeping up with all the news and views and, hopefully, voting on those new choices that have been appearing and disappearing and just teasing us as to when they will be officially posted by Watson.

So please, Come on, Watson, dearheart, April Fool's Day is over ... no more now you see choices, now you don't jokes ... Please, please, with sugar on top, please, let us Vote on something new! We are all anxiously awaiting your next offering!

Cindy,
Wow, Thank You for telling me about the Po-Folks restaurant. If we should be so fortunate to win this beautiful home I would be a regular there. Used to love their summer sausage with black beans and rice. And those huge portions of cornbread.
The link to the Geoduck I posted up above a ways now, is in fact that segment from dirty jobs. If you wanted to click on it. And yes, they are simply huge clams that taste just like the little ones.
Love the blackberry cobbler with ice cream ! I WA. we had tons of blackberries where we lived. Good stuff.

You know Clive, at first I thought you were kidding me about that alligator gar too. Nope!

Oh, when I mentioned an oven earlier , I meant like the old stone ovens. Built actually above the fire into the fireplace. Only thing is to manufacture a steel door to cover it. If you want to get back to traditional things , this is one.

Carrie, Glad your hubby liked the video. Sorry if it made you sick. I guess I am just used to that sort of thing . Iron stomache. I think blog time should be fun time.

Watson,
Well, it is about time you took some time out for yourself. Hope you had an enjoyable time with whatever you decided to do. We did miss you!

Posted by: BlognBob at April 4, 2008 4:18 PM

Oh…one more thing! CabinCraver2008 …… SO HAPPY you are feeling strong enough to post again! Give Erika a hug and kiss for keeping us all in the loop while you were in the hospital, and, then ask for the same back …. That will be from me to you just as a way to let you know what an inspiration you are to me and so many others. I cannot even begin to imagine how hard some days must be for you. And, still, I am always moved by your posts (and those of Erika) as they tell of your determination to give this latest health issue a swift kick to the curb. My prayers and good thoughts for you and your family are sent your way everyday. If I could get a big pot of chicken soup or something else comfy cozy to you I would ….. And I bet there would be a boatload of other things at your doorstep from your other “family” here on the Cabin Blog, if it were possible. But, I must admit, my chicken soup, while homemade and organic, is never the same twice, so you might be better off just accepting my Best Wishes rather than my cooking!! I could knit you same crazy socks!

Carrie-- Katie and I make lots of things with the blackberries we have in the front of our property. We made a peach/blackberry jam last year that was absolutely Heaven. Katie's favorite is when we make peach/blackberry milkshakes. I puree up the fruit, and then add the rest of the ingredients into the blender. Of course, we make muffins, cobbler, and the other usual stuff too. And, yes, that was our house you saw across from the entrance to the subdivision. It was a covered dock you saw to the left. Most of the docks around here are covered. If you looked really closely, you'd see Matt's experimental plane he's building tucked behind the garage.

Heading South-- the closest hospital is Rhea County Hospital in Dayton. It's about 15 or so minutes away from here. They just expanded it this past year. As for boarding Horses. When you go into the entrance of Lakefront Estates -- you'll see 4 horses grazing. I've been told that that person boards horses. If not, I know the lady who teaches horse back riding to Katie boards horses, and takes VERY good care of them. It's called Pioneer farm, and the woman to talk to is Val. She's also in Spring City, and she's wonderful with teaching kids if you need that too. I really don't know how much she charges to board horses though.

As for the fireflies -- Katie goes trying to catch them all of the time. She uses a little butterfly net. I actually saw my 1st butterflies of the season on Wednesday.
And, there's no elk around here but lots and lots of deer! One day a few weeks ago, I counted 12 in my backyard.

Jan-- I have no intension of entering the contest either. After all, I just live across the street. I just think it's cool to vote on the different stuff to go in there. And, to watch the blog home go up.

I did find out what day the crew will be taping over there again. So, I'll have to make some of my baked goodies and bring them over to everyone. I have a really great brownie recipe that tastes like fudge. Maybe I'll make them.

The cabin continues to amaze me. The view of the lake from inside is unbelievable! Does anyone know what the driveway will be made of? To place plain cement upon a canvas such as this, is just too shrewd. Any block in the future?

We are having so much fun watching and participating in the voting for the cabin. It is fun to imagine ourselves there in the house of our dreams as each day goes by. Thanks to you bloggers who provide that extra info on the weather and the taxes, they really add to the total picture. The number of states and opinions represented really make this an interesting process. Thanks DIY and crew for the FUN!!!

Clive, Thank you, I didn't think about wireless speakers. I'm going to look into that for the garage and surprise my husband. I do enjoy ours on the deck. Now I have to vote for the heater.

Posted by: Kat at April 4, 2008 9:27 PM

You know I was looking at the houseplans then at the cabincam. Going back and forth. I'm guessing they still may be able to add the half circle windows where they once were suggested. They have not added the front peaks above the front bedroom and 2nd entrance/mudroom windows. They would most likely cut it out of the wood above the log it looks like they will use the cedar shingles there to me. It's easier to cut them out of the plywood than the logs. So just maybe they will still be there.

Nice chatting with you guys on the chat line (you know who you are).

Ahmed could you not have some similar matching rock shipped in from a local garden nursery or quarry possibly? Or make some molds of the rocks you do have? That could be interesting project!

Did I tell you that I love love love Luci's idea about rocking the basement wall. It would suit the house and lot very well in my opinion. There is nothing prettier than rock accents for a log cabin wall. Whether they are the big flat rocks for the basement or crawspace areas or the pebbly ~chunky~ river rock (the ones that are two handed sizes) for the chimney.

Owning , at present, one 6 yr. old Lab, I understand that our pets hold bar! I live in a strongly deed restricted community now - our deed restrictions total 77 pages. I can only let Loki out back on a chain, and I hate that.
7 yrs. ago, in frustration, I ran for the board of directors, and am now the treasurer. But i know those 77 pages to the last comma. When we found our lot on Watts Bar Lake, I was dumbfounded when the entire Articles of the subdivision totaled 3 pages.
All that is needed to find your own heaven is a bit of research, I will never live in such a restricted community again.

I may have a more than normal knowledge of deed restrictions than most, but the iron of the documents really does reside in the interpretations of the board at present. To BlognBob:
I had to laugh that you thought I could have been your mom playing games with you. Wouldn't that have been funny.

To colleen:
I agree totally about the pie crust, but everyone I know has their own best pie crust, or they refuse to make it when you can buy it. This is why I didn't include the crust recipe. I tend to still struggle with the thickness (my mom always made it look so easy), but it is fun to roll the dough. Plus, I then get to make extra for my pie tarts.

To Heading South:
Hope you enjoy the rhubarb pie. Let me know how it rates to yours. I won't be offended if you like yours better, although I may have to get the recipe from you for my fathers annual birthday rhubarb pie.

Hope everyone has/had (depending on when posted) a fabulous weekend!

I can certainly understand if the DIY crew is having problems. The developer still holds control of the articles and can create his dream world on paper but eventually he has to cede control to the community. Hi Fellow Bloggers and Ahmed,
Thank you for the update on the cabin cam. I really look forward to my "daily fantasy" after a long day at work. I did get to vote today, but still no cam pictures. I'm sure it will work better tomorrow. If not, I'll have to call in my trusty computer tech friends to assist with repairs.
The use of local rock sounds awesome. Since I am presently planning some new landscape for my own yard, I am anxious to see what you plan to do espically in the shady areas. My lovly deer eat my hostas like they're cotton candy. Anyone have any suggestions for deer and rabbit resistant plants for heavy shade?
Ticks!! Here in Michigan we have a major fear of deer ticks due to Lyme disease. I've already had a few friends go through some pretty tough times, but they are doing much better after a few months.
Sorry. Got to go. I just received the call that I'm going to be a great aunt for the very first time! I've got to start calling friends and family. Too bad my nephew and wife are in Breckenridge,CO. At least they can e-mail me pictures.
Have a great weekend. I know I will now.

Erin, I told Erika, she says Thank You!!! Heading South, I appreciate your thoughts. I was wondering where everyone else was, then I saw Barbara and Keight, etc. Hi everyone! Glad to see you again.

Back to bed. This is ridiculous. I can barely take enough time to finish a sentance! Oh well, you guys have got it under control! That rhubard pie recipe sounds delicious!!!! I have never had rhubard pie. I had great strawberry cream pie at a restaurant in Marysville, TN. Best I've ever had in my life. Does rhubarb have a similar flavor to strawberries? If not, can you campare it to something.

I'm stalling!!! Goodnight all, and may the Worthiest blogger win!!!

Hello Ahmed:

I'm a serious woodworker. This would be paradise if there was a separate buildng for a workshop. I would recommend a minimum of 500 sf with lots of natural light, a wood stove for those cold winter days and a small kitchen area.

Watson,

We could really use a new blog. This one is getting too long.

Also, some have mentioned being able to see the cabin from another angle, and seeing the lakeside view. Am I missing something? I can't seem to find this other camera view anywhere on the website. Does anyone know what they are talking about?

I am bummed that I missed the sneak preview on the new choices. Anyone know when they are coming for a vote?

Hey, the forecast if for a few warm sunny days (until Wednesday) here in the TVA. Maybe we will get to see some more work done on the cabin!

PHOOIE! MY SYSTEM WENT DOWN JUST AS I STARTED TO VOTE AND I COULD NOT FINISH MY VOTING. YOU NEED TO FIX THAT...... SO A PERSON CAN FINISH VOTING OR START OVER. A PROGRAMMED FINISH CLICK WOULD BE NICE.

WOW! I must say, All the choice's that have been made are really wonderful.

You know, That wall next to the Master bed and Bath really does need something a bit more don't you think?

I understand there are load and bearing issues, and neighbors that might be something to consider, never the less, it is very stark with all but a single door. Couldn't some light to the Master bath, Closet perhaps, or additional lighting to the Master suite be added? I don't think a skylight will configure in so the only other alternative would be adding windows.
With the full length door cut, and the extent of the building , it makes it near impossible to change the single door to a window. As it would show badly inside. Expanding for another double door should be possible. But I am not sure how that will go over.
Perhaps side light windows might be an option for the Master Bath along that blank wall. Since they are generally narrow and non opening. I know cutting the holes will be fun but ask Chris Grundy about the right tool for the job and maybe not too bad. Or maybe side lighted door for the Master? Just throwing out thoughts folks. That wall is rather barren.
Not sure about where the neighbors will build, perhaps DIY knows something already that we don't about it.

??? My guess is that the cement truck was there for the patio... because the basement was poured well before the roof went on...back on the 3/21 photos... check the photos when Chris Grundy was there??? Any chance we can get more up to date photos, I love seeing the cabin coming together...I'm addicted... I need more!!! PLEASE

In all the hundreds of blogs I've not found the original virus warning from A Muse, but I was checking out the slideshow in the "Blog Cabin Update" when, all of a sudden a spoof from a supposedly righteous company started running and trying to download onto my computer. I shut down immediately & started running virus & spyware. Hopefully I moved fast enough. Could a hacker have put some noxious script onto the Blog Cabin website? Anyway, let's all "Be careful out there!" How many of you are old enough to remember that line?
Anyway, I simply LOVE the basement! Think I could live there....

An outdoor fireplace is great but how about a fire pit down by the lake so people can sit around the fire right next to the water in the evenings.

Looking at the diy experts list for the blog cabin. I noticed Amy Wynn Pastor's on there. Welcome to DIY blog cabin, Amy and etc. Now I see it! You and Amy Devers have been Trading Spaces. I watched you on tlc from the beginning Amy wp. Seen Amy D. on the new TS and I wondered where you went to. Glad you came to the blog cabin 2008. You ladies are lucky, Got good series to work on. Trading spaces was the start of my decorating show obsesion, besides the king Bob Villa. I have really learned alot about construction from him. But I also learned alot from you Amy: by seeing you build nice furnitures and things on ts. I learned I could too! I love helping my husband redo or build things for our home. Just wish we had more time and more money to be able to do the things we want for our home. So I could put that tv obsession (education)/ knowledge I have to work. Would be alot of fun to me to be able to tackle more of the things you have to do when remodeling your home! Not that we don't have alot of frustrating moments that comes along with that part of life too. But those things can teach you to be a little more patient. I think. Or give you an outlet for the frustration as well. Hammers and a piece of scrap wood.....

The photos of the site are great! It is fascinating to watch the daily progress and actually get a feel for the landscape. One thing that I wonder about is the pitch of the land as concerning erosion and I am also wondering if the driveway will be widened enough at the entry of the garage for a vehicle to easily line up with the doorways. I have seen many driveay designs that were not properly thought out and the garage is basically inaccessible. Thanks, Dylan R

Hello bloggers and DIY crew I just returned home from vacation in the sunshine state and temps of 80 degrees and sunny to 50 and rain I am freezing back in Kentucky. Each day that went by I was thinking about getting home to vote and blog. The anticipation of seeing the progress almost got to me, and yet I was amazed once again to see what had been done. I got lots of reports of flooding in Kentucky while we were gone and thought you would not be able to acomplish much but oh was I wrong. This is great work and soon the voting will switch to another category and the roof will go on you go crew!!!!! We love you out her in our blog world and great job. Thank You, Will Webb

Ok I just have a couple of suggestions people:
First, it's a cabin so we should have an outdoor heater for intertaining! (not a refrigerator)
Second, again it's a cabin. A get-away place even! We should be voting for a recreation area in the garage because hopefully we are going to take advantage of the outdoors in our new cabin.

THank you Watson for getting back to me but you still need to ask Chris/Simon why there is a change from the blueprints - they did the same thing last year so get after them! lol

Watson: Hahaha - already have!

Cabincraver2008 - I did see you post and glad to see you back but take care of yourself and follow doctor's orders so that you don't land back in the hospital again. Hope you are getting your stenght back and will be up and running soon - prayers are with you as always! Say "Hi" to Erika - hope she and her family are well and enjoying this Spring weather.

Clive - we use to do that also with the fireflies - we did not know any better at the time but it was fun!

BlognBob - now my cousins were born and raised in Washington State and had nothing to do with visiting us in MA! They said they had fireflies out there on their farm! How come you don't???? lol Like your idea about the stone/brick oven. Great for homemade baked beans to go along with that bread!

Helen Miko - glad to see you back! Keep those blogs coming about our cabin that you are keeping an eye on for all of us.

Sunday already! Brought work home to do for tomorrow and have had a busy weekend doing everything I could not do during the week!!!! So I have to run. Take care all will try to blog again during the week.

Hope all had an enjoyable weekend. Something my hubby and I finally were able to do this weekend (Our Yearly Spring Fling Fixer Upper Project) got me thinking that it would be an excellent addition to my WISH LIST of things to add to the Blog Cabin to make it even more enjoyable for the lucky winner – GARAGE DOOR INSULATION!

OK, I agree, this WISH is not for something fabulous to add to outdoor fun on the lake, or breezy, lazy afternoons on the decks, but, it will sure help to relieve stress when opening up utility bills, which I am all for, as the warm weather turns Hot, Hot, Hotter, and then, sooner or later, cool, cold, who left the door open - it's FREEZING in here!

Unless the garage doors being installed are already of the pre-insulated variety, adding the insulation by kit will really help with the energy efficiency of the home, especially since there will now be the additional living space (Man Cave) at the same level of the Log Home.

Maybe the foundation method used will help with the energy efficiency at that level but, a simple project like insulating the garage doors can save a bundle of energy costs. It is a fact that a garage situated as it is in the Blog Cabin, can be the largest un-insulated (or poorly insulated) area of a home, and a real energy drain when it comes to heating and cooling costs.

There are a couple of ways you can go:
• One is reflective foil insulation using heavy duty polyethylene.
• Reflective foil insulation usually consists of two layers of heavy duty polyethylene foam sandwiched between two sheets of aluminum foil. The normal thickness is 5/16 of an inch.
• The other is molded polystyrene panels which carry a higher R value.
• Both come in kits which are easy to install with a tape measure, straight edge and a utility knife.
• Most installation kits are made of standard sized garage doors, which are usually 9ft. by 7 ft. for single doors and 16 ft. by 7 ft. for double doors. You can order kits in more non-traditional sizes as well. If you can’t find a kit, reflective foil insulation is also sold in bulk rolls and can be cut to fit.
• There’s also the homemade approach, cutting pieces of foam core and attaching them with double-sided tape.
• A layer of double lip weather stripping will help you seal the gap between the door and the floor. Or a kit containing a rubber strip with spring tension can be installed for a tighter, cleaner look.
• Besides the savings, insulating your garage door reduces noise and provides a more comfortable working environment.

We used a kit, followed the directions and got the project done quickly (even with the ‘help’ of the kids), and we already feel it was a success (of course, we always figure if we are still talking to each other AFTER one of our do-it-ourselves and save some $$$ projects is completed, then, the project can be labeled a success). Now we are looking forward to the added bonus of lower utility bills so that we can go out and do something fun with family and friends. For those thinking about buying a kit to install at their current home – We did discover most garage door professionals will install the panels for a minimal charge, but it’s a cheap and an easy DIY project that requires minimal tools that are readily available. The money you save can go to more important things like an ice cream maker, maybe an old-fashioned crank style one, for taking turns and making sweet moments and long lasting memories on a sunny summer afternoon, with family and a few new found (Blog) Friends. That’s my WISH, too.

I logged on a couple of days ago, apparently during a transition of the voting page. There were all the previous and current choices, plus the next batch to be voted on. The format was a bit different also. They were gone the next day, but I've been impatiently waiting for them to come back. Watching this all come together is really a trip. Can't wait to move in. ;-) Ted

Hi Bloggers,

I read something about a rhubarb pie. I'll have to back track through all of the blogging to find that recipe, I love ruhbarb.

I've also read that there are new things to vote on. I haven't seen anything. Not even a flash after I've voted. I was thinking that it's about time that there was something new.

I'm also having trouble getting to the blog page after I vote. It keeps taking me to the pictures of Watson at the cabin sight. Then when I scroll down the page it takes me backwards to the 2007 winners pictures. I don't know what I did this time to find it but it took about 15 minutes.

Stone around the foundation would realy look nice. If there aren't enough stones on the property there's always the synthetic stone/man made like the stone that was used on last years cabin's fireplace. It would put less stress and weight on the foundation and look just as good. To make the cabin look like it's comming or growing directly out of the ground would realy be something.

The last time I posted anything the last date was March 31st. I posted on the 4th of April. Now there's a bunch of postings. I guess that Watson was hiatus at this time. Welcome back Watson I hope that you were able to get some rest. I know that keeping up with all of us is a chore at times.

Also welcome back cabincraver. I'm glad to read that you're at home now. Keep taking t easy and getting better. I know that it feels like that may never happen. Just give it time you'll build your strenght and stamina back.

Woudl veggie gardens be allowed by the home owners association. I've heard stories about some associations that even measured the grass and if it got to long you were fined by the day until it was mowed. Or they would hire a company then charge you for the cost plus the fines. Home owners associations kinda scare me if they are that controlling.

Time to get ready for work tomorrow. Being to work by 6 am is hard when you're not used to it.

Good night all.

Hey Carrie we stayed at Evening View. A little dissapointed this time with our cabin, but tried to find something close to Pigeon Forge so our 12 yr old son and his friend would have alot to do. Myself I am happy just being at the cabins. The best one so far was the Amazing Grace with Cobbly Nobb we were the 2nd family to rent it. I'm going now to look at Oakhaven Resort. We are in SC about a four hour drive. We do try to go a few times a year this was my 3rd trip this year and we will be going back in Sept for our anniversary. I'm hoping for a surprise trip for my birthday. I know what you mean by spring cleaning we had to do that to. We live a busy life but it's fun our son nickname Hammer is in sports, right now it's baseball which hubby coaches we also have cattle so always repairing and putting up pasture fences. Anyway the cabin is looking awesome. Can't wait to see what we get to vote on next.

Of the three roof choices, the two darker roof styles look the same. Is there any difference? The pictures of them are so small it's hard to tell.

I know long narrow pull out knobs are awesome, but here is some advice from experience. Never, ever wear sweaters, knits or loose tops, or pants with pockets because every one of them will be stretched or torn by those same pull knobs. My husband and I had bought a home with knobs just like that. I ended up throwing out all my sweaters. Then started replacing all of the knobs. They were in the kitchen, laundry room and the bathrooms.

Posted by: mccdonnab at April 7, 2008 10:22 AM

Really cool choices this time guys. Had a hard time choosing on all the items. But I just know my 14 year old would really love the water park jumper. That item would help a new kid in town make new friends quicker. Too bad we couldn't have a lounger and a boat toy too. I really had a hard time choosing between the rockers and the adirondacks. I love them both natural or painted. And think rockers for the porches, adirondacks for the ground level patios would be a great option.
I have one request: PLEASE DON'T FORGET THE PORCH SWINGS.

Posted by: Carrie Miracle at April 7, 2008 10:33 AM

Yeah! It is time for a new vote!

I must make a plea for the ROUND cabinet pulls. Those bar style pulls will just catch on clothing and rip things. They are not enclosed on the ends.

I hope they get a couple of days of work in today and maybe tomorrow. The next round of rain will be here by Wednesday.

Now we just need a new blog entry. :-)

keight so sorry to here about the fence law :( my older dog no problem but ive got a 2 yr old german shorthair . geez she'd be in the next co. in about 30 min. and i had a friend that had the electric fence. her dog got zapped and didnt return for 3 days. that happened in phoenix area.
to jan, come on try to win this im sure there's a way to make this work, block wall. picket fence, thats my plan! i would rather have my neighbors dogs penned up than running free. had that experience here when 3 of my neighbors dogs got in my fenced yard and attacked my much smaller older dog. not pretty ! and boy was i honked off
the new voting that one plastic water thing omg you'd have to have a separate garage to house that thing and even with a compressor how long would it take to blow that sucker up ?
cabinet pulls i'd prefer bin pulls . but voted on the trad round prob look better with the crafstman cabinet choice. the patio furniture i actually liked the wood but voted for the metal cause of upkeep. wood has to be cleaned and sealed every yr. rocker/chair whatever.
the green feature the composter i have one that can be easiely turned they dont work unless you can mix that stuff. liked the rainbarrel good idea but thought could be added later, the solar lites how pretty would that be around the patio at night. so thats how i voted.
ticks are not just bad for your pets but scarry for humans. lyme disease. reason being very difficult to diagnos and then treat.
god bless cabin craver and family praying for you.

Hi Bloggers,

Finaly got to vote on the new stuff. I'm not to interestedin the water toys. I figure that the water park one was about the best. I have a grandson that would love to play on that.

Has any one ever tried to get out of those adirondack chairs. If your legs aren't in good shape ther's no way to get out of there with out some kind of assistance. The rockers are a much better proposition and would match the cabin better. Painted or unpainted.

The option between the composter, path lights, or water barrels. I picked the composter. The pathe lights might be nice in a small space but I cann't see them being any great help in a garden path area. Some neighors have them in front of their houses and after dark they only give small spots of light that gradualy die as the solar panel looses power. The rain barrels would be a nice thing to have but would look out of place agains the house. A water cistern (underground of course) would be better. In a real down pour those barrels would fill fast, then overflow. An inground water catchment system would be so much better. The composter is a good idea because the leaves in the fall can be put in there to make soil/compost for the spring. Also kitchen waist such as raw vegitable matter in there too. That woudl save on things sent to the land fill and create something useale for the yard.

My greatest concern are the pulls for the cabinets. There is only one that can be of use to some one with hand problems be they artritic or what ever. That one is the bar pull. The others are knobs of some sort. You have no idea what it's liked to try to hold onto a round object to pull a cabinet open. Your fingers have to strength to either pull the door open or hold onto the knob. I write from experience. There are days that I cann't even hold onto a pint cream bottle, it just slips through my hands. Handles can be decorative and usefull at the same time. Something with enough space between the handel and the cabinet to slip your fingers through. I hope that I remember correctly that the oild copper sink fixtures won the voet. If that is what we are having on the kitchen sink we will need something similar in texture and color for the cabinet's and drawer pulls. What type of handles are going to be on the double hung windows. There has to be some kind of woindow pull isn't there?

When we get an option to choose the hardware for the doors please put in the option for lever action doors instead to twist knobs. It goes batch to the hand useage again. It's also easier for children to use a lever handle than a twist knob. Having had kids I know the down side to lever handles for kids is easy in easy out of a room.

Talking about hardware, can we possible have a front door with some of the rodiron work on it. That beautiful black iron work against a wood door would realy look great with the log cabin.

Ahmed when you think about the landscaping for the back of the house or even for the front. How about making it look like a glade for glen. Just random planting of alpine blubs and flowers. Useing as many of the native varities as possible and drought tolerant grasses and plants should aleviate some of the water usage, and if gray water or a catchment system can be used so much the better.

If natural rock or a similar man made product can be used around the foundation to camoflage it would be the way to go. please don't leave it as it is and don't what ever you do put brick around it please. It just wouldn't be right.

Have a good day bloggers

You know, My toughest choice this round would be the Adirondack Chairs vs. The Rockers. and that is only becuase TN is almost home to the rocker. Adirondacks are a lot more comfortable to relax in as long as the have the accompanying leg rest/ ottoman.
When the new blog comes up I will switch to that one. If you wanted to transfer this over for me Watson It would also be much appreciated.
Like the bar pulls . in the lead already.
Like the Ash Lawn furniture more natural and in the lead as well already.
I of course a going for the rain barrel , but am not too disappointed because these items are not so costly.
The Lake Toy? Well, unless you already own a speed boat or unless the canoe in a box comes with a big outboard, then a towing toys don't make too much sense unless DIY is hinting to us about something? I am content with the canoe ! And am grateful to DIY for adding that. The lake toy, whatever everyone decides is ok with me. Though I love the water ,I would be fishing more than any other water activity.
Though that Cabana Islander would be somewhat safe refuge from that alligator gar.

Keight,
My lovies are mixed- doberman, rottweiler, and lab. Like I said...big dogs. Yes, very smart and very gentle. When ever I cough, both dogs come and sit at my feet. They knock on the door when they want in or out and they have learned to open the sliding glass doors, too. Now I keep it locked!!

Rhubarb does not taste anything like strawberries. It is more tart. That is usually why people add berries to the pie. I like eating it fresh with salt. Others dip it in sugar.

Are we winning a boat with the cabin or how do we pull those towables? Being a bit practical, the lights are a lot cheaper than the composter or the rain barrel. So one could buy the style they prefer on their own. The composter does not look like the easiest to work with.

I agree with the blogger on getting out of an adirondack chair. I find them very uncomfortable.

Thank you to the person who is on top of the community restrictions. Much as I would love Helen for a neighbor those restrictions are forbidding. Guess I will have to win the green home on HGTV or stay in MN with fireflies, wild turkey, elk, and the mosquitos. LLL

Posted by: LindaL at April 7, 2008 4:28 PM

Hi all! I'm glad the new stuff is up to vote on too. I'm also happy that the subdivision we belong to isn't as restrictive as the gated community is. I am going to be planting my veggie garden within the next week or so. My friend owns a tiller, and I was talking to him today where I want to put it. I already planted my strawberries, and herb garden this weekend.
As for what I voted for, and why -- I voted for the decorative pulls for the cabinets. Mainly, because my husband almost took his finger off getting his wedding ring stuck on a cabinet with the bar pulls. I also had my Katie vote for the lake toy. Who else but an 11 year old would be perfect for that choice. LOL As for the types of boats around here -- we have lots of pontoon boats, cruising boats & fishing boats. I can honestly say I have never seen a boat without a motor go by. And, any of those boats will pull the toys.
I also voted for the deck set with the wrought (sp?) iron. Even though I liked the look of the other one, I have a friend who has a similar one, and it is not comfy to sit on for any length of time. If you have short legs, like I do, when I sit in that chair I feel like I'm pregnant, it makes me sit back so far. I'm also not too partial to the adirondack chairs for the same reason. I have a bad hip, and have a very difficult time getting out of those. Give me a comfortable rocking chair any day. Besides -- my friends who own the log home down the street have a rocker on their porch, and it just 'fits', you know what I mean. Finally, I voted for the solar lights, as it's a pain to run wire and lights around here. Eventually, I want to get some solar lights to go all along my driveway -- which is no short distance.
Well, a little birdie told me that they will be filming across the street tomorrow -- so, as promised, I'm going to make some brownies and bring them over.

Mitzi, I think you would love~ Oakhaven Resort. They have different interior styles, all log exteriors and it is close to Dollywood and Pigeon Forge, and all the stuff to do. They have a nice website that will show you all you need to know. And they have always been clean and are nice people to rent from. We have stayed with them 3 times. Never been disappoited with them! They will allow you to go in and look at them too! If you do a drive by and check them out. I too am happy, so very happy to just stay at the cabins. At least I don't have to clean them if I don't want to. (: Just sit n relax(: I wish I were there now. All of their homes have nice porches (my favorite part) and bbqs. We have a 14 yr old daughter she likes it there! She's into volleyball. So we know all about those busy sports schedules and practice schedules. She has one more big competition (nationals in May) and then her season is over for this school year. Good luck with your ball season!

All I can say is yummmy!!!!!! with all those recipes coming! Keep them a coming. I'm not much of a cook and I need all the help I can get!
Helen I bet those guys at the cabin would appreciate your yummy delights...

WOW - Now things are really getting interesting.
Hey DIY - If I vote for a towable toy for the lake, will you include a speed boat?

Posted by: tonyP at April 8, 2008 10:25 AM

How does this work? I have been voting since the beginning but did not know that I was suspose to blog. Is this how you can win? Are you suspose to blog? I always wondered how you can tell who voted when there are any login information needed.

Hi Everyone, This is sooooo much fun and exciting to watch the cam and read all the blogs.
Carrie, so glad you enjoyed the monkey story, if you ever get to Florida we'll be glad to take you and your family to see them and thanks for the well wishes, I'm the one in a wheelchair (Misty).
Cabincraver & Erika, know how you feel, been in & out of hospitals myself and spent too much time in bed so I wish you good health & keep improving, everyday is a step forward. Living in pain is not fun but we are so lucky to have family & friends and our blogger buddies.
Keight & Helen, thank you for all your info, you both help all of us and it's appreciated, what great neighbors you'll make and Helen, there will always be a rocking chair waiting for you to visit with those delicious brownies.
Clive, A.Muse, Heading South & Everyone, keep blogging, you make my days and I'm sure everyone looks forward to your blogs.
I'm hoping the stone they use is River Rock, it would be perfect for the bottom of the cabin, the fireplace, in the landscape, etc., very pretty and common in cabins for a natural look. I didn't vote for the rocking chairs because I already bought them (hoping someday to own a log cabin) so I voted for the Adirondack chairs instead. My only worries are the kitchen sink (too high & deep) and the botton freezer/fridge (too hard to open the bottom & the top too high) for those of us in wheelchairs. I'm great with most of the other choices and still hoping they make the home usable for the handicaped.
Lymes Disease, anyone wanting info please let me know, I was misdiagnosed over 16 years ago and spent over a year between 2 hospitals (I lived in Jersey at the time) before an Infectious Disease Dr. realized it was from a tick bite. It was too late, it had infected my heart & joints and we lost our first ranch due to medical bills, we're good now but my health was ruined. There are stages, President Bush was cured last year, if caught soon enough & treated properly you'll be fine.
The info about horses was appreciated as we still have ours even though we retired them after my health ruined riding for me, they still bring me pleasure to watch. Like our other pets they'll be with us for life.
Best of health & good luck to all and if we win please come visit us, we'd love to meet everyone.

Hi all! I have to tell you what happened when I dropped off the brownies today to the crew. I was watching Ahmed being filmed working the backhoe (at least I think that's what it was -- I'm not too good at that)-- anyway, I was just about to give the brownies to one of the crew there, when Amy (I believe that's what she said her name was) asked me if I minded if they filmed me giving the brownies to Ahmed. Can you believe it??!!! I'm still in a state of shock -- that, and regretting I didn't wear a nicer outfit and put some makeup on. LOL

Carrie -- my brownie recipe uses an entire bar of Ghiradelli Bittersweet chocolate and only 1/2 cup of flour. They are really fudgy. If you want it. let me know and I'll post it for you.

BTW-- they put the lake back up to normal this past Sunday, so the new pics should show what the lake will look all summer long.

Hello DIY-
The cabin is really shaping up. I really like all the features that we vote for. I can hardly wait to see the finished product. I wish I could win it.

Posted by: Dorothy OConnor at April 9, 2008 12:09 PM

I have been voting since the the DIY cabin started. How do they count your votes if you were not blogging since the beginning. I always wondered that. Can anyone tell me how this works?

Posted by: Dorothy at April 10, 2008 3:01 PM

i think i have the same question re votes and entry into this contest. if there is no entry to fill out, but i have voted from the beginning, how does this cabin get won?

Posted by: peighten at April 11, 2008 7:17 PM

It sure would be nice to have a nice outdoor kitchen to go with the outdoor refrigerator. In the summer I would like to sit out on the patio and sip a glass of wine while I watch the sunset on the lake. I bet it would be a beautiful site.

Posted by: Dorothy at April 17, 2008 9:44 AM

Now Iam getting very excited about how far we have gotten with the design of the cabin. I would love to win it.

Posted by: Dorothy at April 22, 2008 10:26 AM

I thought that we voted on the roof color and the refrigerator already. Are trying to check if we will vote the same as we did before. I can hardly wait to see the finished product. I wish that I could win it.

to Dorothy at April 17

You will not see any sunset from the porch. It faces East.

Posted by: Warren at April 24, 2008 4:00 PM

Are you checking if we change out votes? That is alright sometimes it takes me a couple of times just to make sure I like some things. I sure like this cabin.

Posted by: Dorothy at April 25, 2008 3:11 PM

This is my first time blogging. I have looked and longed for the blog cabin. It is beautiful. I have voted for several features. I like everything chosen except a couple. I would have liked tile on the fireplace and the gas burning logs, but that's democracy for you. The majority wins, and dispite the couple of items, the cabin is wonderful.

MY WIFE AND I ARE THINKING OF THIS NAME FOR THE 2008 CABIN. "BALD EAGLE HAVEN" A PLACE FOR RELAXATION, YET FUN IF YOU WISH, AND THE KIDS OR GRANDCHILDREN, IF YOU HAVE LIKE US WOULD JUST GO WILD WITH A LAKE LIKE THIS TO EXPLORE! WE HOPE YOU CHOSE OUR CABIN TITLE, AND GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE WHO SUBMITS.

I still do not understand how you can win this cabin. I have voted from the beginning but did not know about blogging until the middle of the voting process. I would love to win this beautiful cabin.

Watson: Hi Dorothy - the sweepstakes for the cabin will kick off around the middle of August - check back on the site and, when the sweeps kicks off, there will be clear instructions on how to enter - thanks for your interest!

Hey, Ahmad/Watson:

I am having voting withdrawals. Since I cannot vote or view any major building changes, I thought I would just say hello to you two and the building crew. Sure pray I am the winner of this years Blog Cabin Sweeps. I can see myself on the deck, pulling into the garage, fishing from the lake. Whew!
