It's a tough job and it's mine
Crying the computer blues...
I have no problems reading all of your blogs and comments but have been having plenty of trouble getting my own comments and replies back to you. Thanks to plenty of phone calls and emails to Watson, things are sort of looking up (I think!).
This whole "sitting for hours on-line" thing is new and sometimes painful for me.
I love all the information but am slow with bouncing around, chatting back and forth, researching different products etc. I much prefer working outside with my hands.
Still trying,
Ahmed Hassan

What do you think about extending the front porch to make it easier to access the windows...or to add decorations? It just does not look well balanced.

Hey you are busy and have alot to do. You are alot like my husband he likes being outdoors fishing, his thinking hole and working with his hands. He's a carpenter- cabinet builder & installer. But I must say it's a thrill when one of us bloggers is directly replied to. But we do understand that not everyone likes computers. I for one: the only things I can do is email, search some websites and blog this blog, which is my blogcabin is my bait and I am hooked bad to blog cabin. If I had to do anything technical with a computer. I probably would fry it! Anyway thanks for all the hard work you all do from the plans to the website to the jobsite to the goodies sponsored and the tv series. This really is my favorite show and website I just love diynetwork.

Hi...
I will see if I can answer a few questions for you as we live on Watts Bar just around the bend from the house and have been here for two years.
Bears - NO we don't have any. Deer Yes - and their are quite a few of them. One Sunday morning we drove over to see the house (yes we walked around it) and as we were leaving we saw a deer about a hundred yards away. As we drive the back road to our house we don't go over 20 miles an hour because we don't know when we will come upon one or eight deer.
The water out in front of the house is about 15 feet deep when the water is high during the spring, summer and early fall months (where it presently is now). Some of the water toys are easily put in the garage or if their is a dock they are stored their. We spend a great deal of time on and in the water - temperature the other day was in the 50 and 60 depending on where you are at on the lake.
The house.... When you look at it from the lake you see the deck that goes around the front and sides. They were putting on the deck roof the other day and it really changed the appearance of the house – it makes it look larger. The chimney looks so tall from the water and makes a statement. We are anxious to see what it will look like with the roof finished and the chimney done. The trees are really a beautiful yellow green now and the grass is in full growth.
Yes we retired here and our children and grandchildren love to come and visit

Ahmed, grateful for all you do and your openess to detail suggestions and change. On the porches, I thought screened would be a must for bugs; which I am sure you will be doing. I was thinking they look quite dark, and in the summer with the trees adding more darkness. You may want to consider two sky windows on each ceiling porch; to have more light shining throught. They have wonderful high quality ones with glass that can be cranked open for added air. Just a thought. How about a cam camera on the lakeside? If you do, I'll ask Helen to bring you some more goodies. :-) Have a great day!

Hi Again....
Wanted to tell you that we understand as our house around the bend has dial-up internet.... It takes time to send these messages.
Oh - just a note that living here on the water is a full time job. We may be retired but we are kept busy with the house, property, dock and anything else you can think of besides working part time to keep our brains going at full power. Their isn’t much time to sit in the rocking chair – but that is what Tennessee is know for. There is someone in the area that makes willow furniture that looks great on the deck or just out on the lawn.
Just Retired…

Ahmed things are looking great I can understand what you are talking about being a hands on person. I have been cooped up in the house since march second with my finger that I cut off with the table saw. I was remolding my kitchen and oops there goes. I would like to throw a couple things at you see what you think about them. On the rockers what do you think about the log furniture they are very well built and are a nice touch, and secondly a hammock for somewhere on the grounds. This is all for me I am a landscape contractor and I am bouncing with ideas but I would get a little carried away. If you ever want to chat I will check you out in the afternoons.
Thanks,
Wil

Hello Ahmed! You certainly are doing a fine job. You know Rome wasn't built in a day. That little mansion isn't a cabin. I'm used to staying at those rustic outdoor plumbing kind or mother a nature venture. LOL It's magnificent.
Posted by: Mary from PA at April 10, 2008 9:32 PM
Loved hearing from you Ahmed. The cabin looks great. I can't wait to see what happens outside as well as inside. Any possibility of a fire pit? I realize with two fireplaces it is probably too much. Someone mentioned ceiling fans and although I am not crazy about them as a design feature I think they are really necessary in the south.

Ahmed-- just let me know when you guys will be there brainstorming and I'll bring by some more 'brain food' for you!
Ahmed Hassan: You got it Helen, and thanks again!

Hi Ahmed,
It is so nice you are taking of your time to consort with the blog. I don't know if we expect more than a sometimes hi there. It is ok. Don't work yourself too hard.
I agree with the front porch thing. A bit...well, needing. The local folk like the idea of a little more porch to put their rockers on. And I think that might be the case with me too.
In any case however, you are doing a spectacular Job ! You guys really pour it on when you get going ,that is very obvious.
There are quite a few that would really like to see a cam on the other side facing from the water so we can see the fireplace and all the action there , back and forth might work for the view cam pics?
We can't wait to see you at your best with the landscaping too. I know you will do a marvelous job.
Thank You so much for yours and this crews brilliant efforts. Our dear friend Helen seems to love coming there to see you all. Thank You from me for treating her so nicely.

think "raw" wood
some people MIGHT not like traditional colors.
just because a 'design star' or a HGTV/DIY staff member says something looks good doesn't mean it actually does.
"raw" wood for decks or outside chairs would leave it up to the new owner to decide if he/she wants black, red, green or electric purple with burnt orange polka dots

While your working outside with your hands, check how you feel about having to go thru the length of the basement to get up to the main floor when you are coming from the lake. I think a must have for the cabin is a multi level ramp coming from the lakeside to the deck on the kitchen side.
The access to and from the lake will be much more convenient. Please do this now, for when we win the blog cabin it would be a substantial project for us as soon as we get pocession. Sincerely,
John & Pat F.

Good day, Ahmed,
Thanks for your message. I think that your time is best spent working on the cabin and grounds. We bloggers just appreciate our messages being acknowledged and questions answered, but Watson or someone else you designate can respond to us.
You sound a little frustrated with this part of the job - it must be more time consuming than you thought it would be.

Ahmed.... thanks for saying HI!
I think we all understand you have your hands full with all the blogs and keeping check on all the workers & suppliers....
Keep your Spirits up....and I bet if you got the word out when you will be at the cabin you would get some sweets brought down to you....
(Sorry, I have forgotten your name & I can't cheat since I am on a different blog chain oops !!!) But you are my type of good neighbors that I would want in a new area to move to...
Keep up the good work..

Ahmed,
My job is to test software and I'm online all day long. I certainly understand the struggles that you are dealing with. I tend to move to quickly and it slows my system down. I find if I gather a little patience and let thing load properly that things move along much better. I always tend to rush things. Good luck.
Speaking of online - will the cabin have High Speed Internet? I work from home (as is common with many people) and this would be needed.
Yes, wireless cable...sitting on the back porch listening to birds and looking at the lake...ahhhh.......oh sorry...went into dream land there for a moment!

Hey Ahmed!
The cabin is looking great. I can't wait for the TV show to start. I have gotten hooked on this site. It does seem to take forever to read all of our emails, doesn't it. Sorry about that. Hope you are enjoying the beautiful Smokies.

My husband and I have enjoyed reading your blogs; and although, like the rest of you, we'd love to win...we realize that our chances are well, slim. :) Ahmed, we think that you've done a commendable job keeping up with everything... just think how your typing skills have improved!lol!
My boys would love living out there -- two nature lovers. Still marveling at the deer and fox and the occasional wild turkey in our area. As much as we've enjoyed getting in on the voting procress and checking the progress, some of the winning choices seem... incongruent with the style and idea of a "log cabin", no?
Best of luck to all. We eagerly await the finished product!
Posted by: Mid-Atlantic Lady at April 11, 2008 9:58 AM
Yeah! It's a 'dirty job' but someone has to do it! Ha Ha.
Ahmed, I hope the blogging blues are better today. Just a little follow-up on the ‘dead’ space beside the front porch. The cabin can never have enough storage space. The restrictions on freestanding structures like sheds are a problem in Lakeview Estates. Could that space be utilized for storage? If the porch were extended out to meet the mud room and master bath side walls and a suitable waterproof roof installed could the area underneath be utilized as a storage area for things such as fire wood logs, pellets for a pellet stove, garden utensils, watering hoses etc. Maybe to store the deflated water toys in the winter? With some nice faux-log doors to match the apearance of the cabin it could be a useful store, especially as it's right next to the front entrance so easy to bring things from it into the house if needed (logs etc.)
Ahmed Hassan: I'm all over this itty bitty issue with the sides of the front porch. I've been talking to Chris and Simon as well as Ted with Rustic Design. We all agree that something creative needs to happen here with the front of the house. All of you are welcome to send ideas forth so that we have that much more to consider...Let's see what happens!
Posted by: Clive at April 11, 2008 9:58 AM
Ahmed, hang in there, it is a "good with the bad" time for you. It will all end up good isn't that great to know! At least you've improved your reading and research skills...ha!
The cabin is looking so great.
The toy selection is overwhelming but I'm going for the toy that would get the most use; the water park.
Keep on keeping on the dream is coming to life!

Not many comments on picking lake toys or outdoor furniture. Rocking chairs are fun for the young and give the old an excuse to hold on to the young ones.
This home is going to be amazing.
When are we going to see some episodes on the progress. Slide shows are nice but put Ahmed on the TV!!! Work in progress is very cool to watch, I would bet the ratings would go up.

Just checked on the cam...my goodness, this cabin is really coming together. I love it! I think they are ready to put the roof on. As I was looking at the porches, especially the one on the left....it looks rather dark... Ahmed, I know that I mentioned this before, but can you please consider the sky windows for the ceilings? PPleaseee :-) The sunlight shining through would brighter it up a bit. There are so many windows variations available and may I add excellent quality. I agree with Clive in regards to the front part of the cabin. Two large Pillars would look quite nice for the front...Like BlognBob had suggested a while back. Excellent idea BlognBob. Also Ahmed are you planning to upgrade the driveway, so it will not be as steep? Just a thought to consider....Appreciate all your hard work and your smile!
First off, sorry but it's a little to late for any skylights for the porch roof's. Now as far as BlognBob's idea of pillars for either sides of the porch... I 've asked Ted (Builder for Rustic Design) if we can have the existing fallen logs/former trees on site taken down and run through the Lathe at Barna. He said no problem and is going to have them picked up and done.
He also promised to let me borrow his little Bobcat tractor in order to work on the grading that'll need to be done pretty soon. Lastly on the driveway, We will more than likely have a concrete driveway poured due to the steep grade but we'll cross this bridge a little later.

I thank you for your time. We do appreciate it.
I'm new to bloging also and can sympathize with the difficulties of the flow.
I get to do it when I want, not daily or within x amount of hours, that would be frustrating if I could be outside working.
On to the voting.
Wow I love the fact that we get to vote on finishing details like cabinet pulls. The lake toy is too cool. I will always choose the wood but the metal usually has a longer life with less upkeep.
Again THANKS to everyone involved with the blog cabin!

I am getting in on this late, so I guess I can't complain. Wait a minute...Sure, I can. In this day and age, how can you allow people to vote for a shower with high water flow?? I know this is not the Green Home, but really. The plans look fantastic and so many of the features are wonderful. I am impressed with the fact that changes have been made according to suggestions. But why even make a high water flow shower an option? Shouldn't you have a role in educating and influencing? Obviously, I think so.
Posted by: kate at April 11, 2008 12:42 PM

Kate, I can do without a lot of things. I can use gray water and low flow toilets but I can't go with out a high pressure, lots of water shower.
Don't understand how those path lights keep gaining ground.
Thanks Ahmed for all your hard work.
Hey Wil, which finger and how short. I took the end of my ring finger with a jointer/planer. Only have nine nails to polish. LLL
Ahmed Hassan: Well I've been voting for the solar lights everyday. Don't forget that these particular lights will not necessarily be the ones installed, the picture is simply representing solar lights. I'll be researching solar lights that actually cast of more illumination than just lighting up itself. Solar powered lights are still considered new technology and developers have been working to improve them since inception. so have no fear we will have something that truly functions well installed here. If it wins of course . vote, vote, vote!

From what Helen, Sally and Ahmed say the driveway is steep so a gravel covering isn’t really an option. I’d like to suggest that, rather than simply pouring concrete, DIY uses a more eco-friendly driveway paving.
If it’s very steep it is probably unsuited to the interlocking porous paver grid system that allows grass to be grown in between a plastic grid that acts as the drive base. This is the ‘greenest’ option but maybe will not work for a steep driveway.
Better options may be some sort of solid but porous material such as porous asphalt or porous concrete. The idea is to allow rainwater to pass through rather than be deflected off and cause potential problems. It also allows the ground under the paving to remain hydrated and healthy with less chance of drying and cracking, promoting a healthier yard for plants.
Porous asphalt is a bit tricky and poses a few problems if the temps are hot it can ‘melt’ and become too soft for heavier vehicles.
Porous concrete is easy to lay and requires no finishing (which would seal it). It’s not as cheap as regular concrete but will stop puddling and massive runoff.
The most eye catching porous paving is the permeable interlocking block system. Laid on a gravel bed the blocks of concrete or ceramic permeable paving stones can look spectacular with all sorts of geometric designs similar to the patio we voted on (why not use these blocks on the patio also?). The voids between blocks can be filled with small gravel or sand. They do require periodic sweeping or blowing to keep the gaps from clogging but it’s not a huge effort.
In the UK there is a system using a resin to bond most anything including different rocks, concrete, marble ceramics, glass and even recycled items such as CD’s and other hard plastics. These are crushed and mixed with a resin then poured into the driveway over a gravel bed. When hard it’s porous and the surface can be polished a little to give a reasonably smooth finish that still has plenty of traction. It expands and contracts evenly with seasonal weather changes and has long warranties. It is especially good for curved or even snaky shaped driveways. I don’t know if there is any similar material available in the USA but if there is this is a really good paving system and very eco-friendly too.
As a foot note. This year in the UK legislation will be enacted to encourage anyone wishing to lay a drive or any other paved structure (e.g. parking lot or patio) to use porous materials unless they want to pay a high price for a construction permit. A porous permit is free. The idea is to improve ground water levels and sub surface aquifers and help to lower road runoff into waterways. My city in Wisconsin has just enacted similar legislation to try to get the ground water levels to rise and prevent the seasonal flooding which is almost entirely due to too much surface area being paved with impermeable surfaces. In some places parking lots and even business premises are being demolished to allow more water back into the soil and not running off to the Mississippi unchecked. Forty years ago all our city water came from surface or just sub-surface sources and the city was a renowned spa town. Now we get water from boreholes 1600ft down and it's contaminated with radium and other heavy metals.

More Ideas...Ahmed ? OK.
Other thoughts...??? hmmm... Pehaps Ahmed, a tiered boulder and rock retaining wall with a smooth paver path winding up to front porch level. And/or something with large logs or both.
this way there is not a terrible ammount of back fill, you have fresh planting soil to do something with , and you retain that very outdoors /rustic feel. People "usually" love boulders. And it would give kids a place to play. Plus make this much more accessible as you know many of us are shooting for.Ahmed Hassan: I like what I'm hearing, and yes!, I get it, the more easily accessible the better.

Dear Jan from AZ… Jean tug-of-war! Now that must be a riot to watch. Your clever dogs must warm your hearts everyday with their antics! Do you have to use a combination padlock on your closet?
In early November, Alex and I decided that the time was right to add a little bundle of joy to our place, so we adopted a puppy with fur like soft fluff (Yep, B.J. --- I really do like fluff!). I must admit Alex was hoping for a manly dog like the kind you have, Jan, but the size of our place and our job schedules dictated that we go down a different path. SO … Alex and I decided to go with the dog that sort of chose us when we walked into the place. He is all white except for a bit of caramel color on his ears and muzzle. Alex agreed we could take him home if I promised NOT to ever refer to the puppy as a ball of fluff and with the understanding that we would name him Hercules as an ego booster during trips to the Dog Park (never have really decided if the ego booster was for the puppy or Alex when he had to shout out his dog’s name at the park).
Back tracking in the story a bit - prior to picking up the puppy, we had our first big “child” raising/discipline discussion. Alex said crating was the only way to go … I was reluctant to accept the notion of sequestering the poor thing all day long while we were at work, since a puppy from a shelter would have tolerated being impounded for hours on end already! Finally, I said OK to the crate, but I will admit now, that I was not very good at adhering to the confinement ritual.
Everyday, when we got home from work (and I had ‘forgotten’ to latch the crate door securely) we would find Hercules had totally destroyed one (always just one) item in the house! Feathers from a pillow scattered everywhere one day, the remains of last night’s take-out from the trash deposited on the kitchen floor the next (which, in the defense of Hercules and myself, was not entirely our fault, since Alex was the one who generally ‘forgot’ to dump the bag of trash before he left for work.).
As you can imagine, we found ourselves, like many “new parents”, listening to all sorts of advice from everybody about how to raise our little pride and joy. I mean this honestly, and not in the least bit snarky, though I suspect it will come off that way to some reading this …. I have yet to hear any good parenting advice from someone who hasn’t raised at least one themselves! And that goes for two and four legged “children.”
Still, we listened to everyone hoping for some magic insight that would Hocus Pocus turn us into the Perfect Parents for Hercules. No longer was our DVR set to faithfully record our favorite Discovery, History, or Travel Channel offerings. Alex even relinquished his most watched block of Top Gear’ Episodes from the BBC to make room in the memory system. We developed tunnel vision ---- we were riveted to DVR listings for Cesar Millan. ---- Fast forward, Quick Scan, Reverse -- Help Us! Help Us! Help Us Please, Oh remarkable Dog Whisperer! We watched all the Good Dogs & Good Parents interact at the Dog Park. We put up post-it notes everywhere emblazoned with our new mantra ~ Exercise, Discipline, Affection! We made some good strides, but then there were the days when we were sure Hercules was taking it all in but with an air of utter disinterest …. There were days when we were convinced he was mocking us!
December came. We put up the Christmas tree. The first time we left Hercules alone, he carried a sheep into his crate ---- OK, we could live with that. The next time, though, we found Joseph, HEADLESS! I frantically called our Vet who had foolishly trusted us his cell number before he knew better; I think we are the reason he NEVER gives it out anymore! He assured me that everything would come out in the end (it did) and Hercules would be just fine! He said if we wanted to curb the under the tree shenanigans, we could douse the whole Nativity Set in Hot Sauce. One lick and Hercules would avoid it for the rest of the season, our Vet promised. Alex and I debated about taking such drastic measures, but soon agreed that it was the right step. The next evening we came home to find Hercules curled up in the corner, sleeping peacefully, with the Three Wise Men…. Each Wise Man lovingly licked clean of the Tabasco Sauce. Hercules loved the stuff and must have viewed the set as our best offering of Doggy Treats ever!
Late that evening, I washed the set off and put it up on the mantel, and admitted to Alex that I was wrong about the Crate Issue and that I Promised to Always fasten the latch securely before leaving for work. All in all, I guess it was the best Christmas gifts I could have given them. Hercules loves to eat spicy things and, Alex loves it when I admit he’s right and I was wrong and have to eat my words. (That happens rarely so he has to savor every moment!)
And, life seemed to be getting easier for all of us .…. No more setting the alarm for Hercules’s nighttime potty trips and the “if you leave me alone I’ll get even by destroying something” rebellious streak in Hercules only seemed to emerge when we were distracted or stressed out over something un-Hercules related. Yep, all indications were pointing to us becoming the family others would want to come to for pointers. Life was good and we were patting ourselves on the back. Then came, what is now referred to as the Blue ICE Incident.
Alex arrived home to find Hercules standing just inside the front door …. His paws and underbelly were a shocking shade of Royal Blue! Next to him lay his Tiger doll, the tail now also blue. On closer inspection, Alex discovered that even Hercules’s favorite ball was now Royal Blue. (Oh, for those who are wondering - Yes, Hercules has two balls, but one is pink with stars and he has never shown a real liking towards it.) As Alex gazed past Hercules, he saw a long crooked stream of blue snaking its way from the spare room, down the hall and into the living room. There, at about 18 inches at its peak was an arc of blue covering the walls and drapes. An empty Blue Ice container lay on the floor.
A frantic call to Poison Control and our Vet followed --- Hercules would be OK. Since his muzzle, tongue and teeth were not blue, it was concluded that he had not ingested any of the liquid. Afterwards, we figured out what had taken place that day. We had been gathering gear for a weekend kayak and camping trip and Hercules had somehow escaped from his crate and attacked the stack of Blue Ice Pouches that had not yet made it into the freezer.
So began a series of late night discussions. . What to do, What to do, What ever should we do with Hercules. First we hired a Dog Walker …. Like a Nanny of sorts to give Hercules outside time twice a day while we were at work and extra time at the Dog Park. We looked into a Doggie Day Care for Hercules. We discovered that the really good Doggie Day Cares have long waiting lists and if you want to get in, you have to almost know somebody! The couple down the block is thinking about moving and promised to let us know when the spot at the Center they use for their “girls” might be available. But, since they know Hercules, they asked that we not use them as a reference in case they ever wanted to send ‘their girls’ back there. (sigh) It was hard for me to think that Hercules had earned the reputation as the ‘kid on the block that nobody is allowed to play with’. Alex, on the other hand really enjoys Hercules “Bad Boy Image” and the fact that he grew into his name (parents turned out to be more Old English Sheep Dog and Less Bichon Frise as we were lead to believe) has really helped with that ego thing.
Leaping Forward to April 2008 - We have good news …. Hercules was accepted at the Doggie Day Care and Spa (!) that just opened up on the way to work. It’s brand new, with a very dog friendly staff, and we are hoping it will be a perfect fit for our not so little fellow. They didn’t ask for a reference, just a hefty fee to get the paperwork started. We are keeping our fingers crossed. We realize getting our feet wet in Parenting and Family Life by getting Hercules was the right move for us. It has been marked by lots of learning, growing and adapting roles …. And, as it is with anything in life worth doing, it is definitely a 24/7 commitment and not for the faint at heart! But as Keight mentioned in one of her posts, time spent with those you love is pure gigglelicious! We now understand exactly what she meant! Ahmed Hassan: Do you know that I read this whole piece only to find that it had nothing to do with anything related to Blog Cabin, I should have known.

Ahmed, I think everyone is doing a fantastic job, no complaints here!
I check in and vote every morning with my coffee but I have to come back 3 or 4 times a day plus before I go to bed at night to check the cabin cam and read the blogs. I don't blog very often but I really enjoy reading all the others blogs.
I would also like to thank Helen and Sally who are blessed to live in this wonderful area for all the information they provide.
This log home is the things dreams are made of and to be able to vote, blog and just see it being built is awesome!
The person that wins this home will be truly blessed and I pray they appreciate all the work that has gone into it.

Oops, I hit the enter key before I finished my blog. I don't know if the first part will go in since I did not enter the numbers. I will go through it again, very quickly....
1. Bar pulls, the are terrible, almost like they are alive and waiting to grab a hold of your clothing.
2. Water toys, my concern is the put up and take down and where do we store them? I would hate to have to put them in one of the rooms in the cabin. Plus, the cost of purchasing a boat is prohibited, especially after we pay the taxes.
3. Adirondack chairs vs rocking chairs? the rocking chairs are hands down!! The Adirondack chairs are so difficult to get in and out of without bumping something. Rocking chairs are comfortable, easy to get in and out of, plus they look like TN furniture. I would also vote for a swing.
I sound like a nag, but I a really appreciative of what DYI is doing to make such a great cabin. Plus, I am still holding out for the pot filler over the stove.
Thank you for all you have done!!!

Our city has paved our street with recycled tires. It looks good and so far- after three years- is still holding up well. Ahmed, thanks for everything you do. You and Keight are appreciated.

Ahmed - you're doing a great job, relax, you are too hard on yourself and I know the rest of the bloggers will agree with me. We know how busy you are and with Helen (and her now famous brownies) you deserve a break as do the rest of the crew. Relax and enjoy them, my mouth is watering just thinking about them. Whoever wins will have the nicest neighbors, it sounds like real Southern hospitality. When we got married in Gatlingburg, TN. and honeymooned there we fell in love with the beautiful land and the people. Dollywood, Dixie Stampede, the mountains, everything is nearby, just a short drive. Luckily, if we win, we have relatives not too far from the cabin so our Grandkids would be near our extended family. We'd need the guestroom, we always have company here and we'd always have family & friends there too. Keep up the great work you and the crew are doing and don't feel the need to answer everyone, we understand and your main job will keep you busy enough, tell Helen we all thank her for taking care of you guys & gals too!
Good luck & great health to all!

When will we get to see the building of the blog cabin on TV?Ahmed Hassan: I think it's slated to air in late August. Is this correct sir Watson?

Ahmed~ Thanks so much for all you do. I don't post as much as the regulars but I come here every day to vote and look at my dream.
Sally,Helen,Ahmed or anyone... Can you tell me if it is possible for anyone to go walk around the home site. I have a chance to leave AZ and go to Pigeon Forge at the end of the month. I would love to rent a car and drive to the cabin site and look around. Thanks. :o)

This might sound a little crazy but if I won. I think it would be fun to add a slide coming off the upper back deck into the backyard for the kids to play on & dry out on.... Maybe a climbing rope ladder for them to get back to the slide. Easier access than steps for them, to the ground level. And some exercise for them climbing up. Add a hammock or a couple of extra wide swings
( so I can swing like a kid) them hanging off the deck from the ground level. I also would love to add a tree fort for my kids to hang out / play in also. That would be a kids paradise swings, slides, fort and a lake to jump into....
Ahmed Hassan: Yikes, Fun yes, but like you said a little dangerous and a bit illegal even.

Bless your hearts A. muse, this pet is parent proofing you for sure! Rule #1 when a parent of children or pets " Always expect the unexpected surprise, when not looking."
Dear ahmed and sir watson, reading all these blogs: not knowing if it is for the bloggers or for you @ blog cabin. We all are an entertaining bunch aren't we...? You got our attention: some of us is getting yours. Funny comment, Ahmed! woof woof!
How about a pet proofed room? Some of us really need one! For our "other" children.

a.Muse - What in the world did your epistle have to do with the blog cabin? I also read it word for word waiting for some reference to the cabin-but nothing came. I enjoy reading about the cabin and ideas from other bloggers but this was totally inappropiate. Please dont use this space for personal ramblings. By the way Ahmed thank you very much for all the hard work you and your staff have done so far. I just wish I lived closer like Sally so I could watch the progress in person. You all know that a Iowan won the 2008 Dream Home. Maybe a trend will develop. Good luck to everyone.

WOW!!! I missed a few days coming to the blog site and all I can say is I'm amazed. New fun voting choices and I was shocked checking the cabin cam...moving right along. Ahmed, you and the keyboard hang in there. I better come back more often. Oh and Sally, thanks for your up close info too. Appreciate it.

Oops, I forgot to give you my idea for the front of the cabin.....how about a bear or some sort of animal native to Tenn. carved into the logs that could be used as columns for the entrance. I've read Log Home Living for so many years and sometimes they paint the bears or whatever animal (eagle, deer head, fox, etc.) and they look incredible, can you just picture them carved into huge logs or at the bottom of ramp/stairs? If you can't do big logs how about smaller posts like 2 bears carved (one on each side) greeting you as you come up the front? Please consider & other bloggers let me know what you think. They could even carve fish like whatever type is in the lake but I prefer the bear. I'm sure you could find a local carver nearby and I really think something carved in logs would be perfect to showcase this cabin. Bears could hold lanterns to light up the entrance if used as posts or a family of bears climbing if you use huge logs, just dreaming of my dream home again. Thanks!

???????? for Ahmed
Are you back filling and leveling the ground in the front of the house? Or leaving it as it is?
This will probably change people's ideas on how to change the front entrance porch. I love the idea about the big rustic logs used for the post.
But since you said that this is open for discussion and if the height of the porch stays the same.
I think it might be fun to put a half- round deck on, extending from the bedrom jut out to the mudroom jutout & maybe lower it a step down from the entrance porch. Making a grand entrance. Be a great picture spot for people to take their picture in front of blog cabin 08 (: my inspiration for this is mocking the semi round windows, since they are back :) then adding steps in mock all the way down to the ground. A person could incorporate a gradual curvy sidewalk ramp from the drive way up to the upper deck. You could use rocks/boulders or landscaping bricks to bank it. Ahmed Hassan: Carrie

Hi Ahmed,
Well, we have been asking Watson questions on why the change in the design of the cabin and he was going to check and get back to us but since you are now finally responding to the blogs maybe you can tell us why this happened - same thing happened last year with Chris and Simon - they changed the plans. The windows have been changed in the front of the cabin. There were suppose to be arched windows - not there any more and the two large windows seemed to be reversed and the same size even though the plans show these to be different. Another blogger thought that there had been a change on the side by the Master Bedroom - Clive do you remember this one? Since the windows are in - what are you going to do and are you just going to allow Chris and Simon to change the design. You stated that you have been reading the blogs but if that were the case than you would have known of this change and either resolved it or let us know why the change - we have been asking!!! I realize that your job is not easy especially since this is not your area of expertise building compared to landscaping is a big difference but as the main guy on this project you need to ask the tough questions before the product is at the site to find out why the changes happened. That is why you are the boss!!! So does this now mean that these changes that have taken place since the cabin began to be built are now the true final design and not what is actually shown on the website? And will there be more of these?
I realize that being a landscaper you would prefer the solar lights (again I question whether you have been reading the blogs) but if you have read our blogs - especially Clive you will see that these are useless and do not work over a period of time/break etc. and are cheap so if someone actually thought they would add to the cabin they could go out and purchase these for little to nothing at Home Depot or Lowe's. We know that the picture is just to give us an idea and not the actual item that maybe used in the cabin. The composter or water barrel seem to be more practical than the solar lites-we would like to see more green in the cabin-maybe plants on the roof or even grass. Some bloggers have questioned whether the votes are actually rigged (not me I still believe we are making the decisions with our votes) to be what you (DIY) would like rather than what the voters would like - maybe they were right!
Just so you know we (the bloggers) tend to be a tight group who have been corresponding since the very beginning when we were voting on the design (the building part was still a dream to come true). We research items, discuss options and provide personal input on items being voted on and what we would like to see that has not been offered - like a dumbwaiter! lol We laugh and have a great time. You will learn that we tell stories - A Muse above (like your story A) Before that it was BlognBob (and the racoon)-we don't just talk about the cabin but other items as well - like Cabincraver2008 started out blogging with us but became ill and has been in the hospital. Her favorite daughter Erika was filling in during her illness to let us know how her mom was doing. Cabincraver2008 just came home from her second trip to the hospital and reads our blogs but is following doctor's orders, which means she can't blog like she did before. We all have been saying prayers to get her well! Helen Miko lives across the street and has kept an eye on what you all have been doing for us and reporting back to us, she has also been giving us insight into the area (she was from CT originally) along with delivering sugar to the site! Clive lives in the Midwest but from England and is one of our researchers (ask him about water systems) along with Keight-if you want to know about the regulations of the development Keight will know! BlognBob is our Court Jester and has never seen a firefly so if he wins he will be in for a treat at night! Carrie Miracle and Heading South keep us on track. Adam Bailey doesn't say much but when he does watch out (he does not like your designers on the last blog cabin especially the painted rug on the floor) and is not afraid to express his opinion regardless if others like it or not! lol There are others as the list continues to grow daily and that is a good thing! You will see that we give out recipes (Clive likes the recipes for hard drinks and BlognBob likes the recipes for Geoducks-don't ask him about this one!), congratulations, prayers, we worry and are sad for each other when something terrible happens etc. since we have gotten to know each other over the past few months. When we do not see a blog from someone we worry. We are like a large family spread out over the country. There is Barbara Turner, Joyce, Betty Wilcox, Jenny, Mary from Texas, in fact we have a couple of Marys!,Colleen, Noel B, Jan, Linda, Lori and many more - too many to list.
We are not afraid to express our opinions-ask Watson! As for me I tend to be up front and tell it like it is. If I ask a question and don't get an answer I will continue to ask until I get an answer-just like a bad penny that won't go away (its the leprechaun in me)!!! lol
If one of us wins the cabin we intend to have a huge blow out party at the cabin to celebrate the good luck of one of our new friends. Clive you are bringing the piano right?
So Ahmed expect anything and everything from us. We will make you laugh until you cry! So hop on the roller coaster for the ride of you life. You will certainly enjoy the ride. You have a big task to accomplish after all you are building a cabin that one of us will win.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Erin Ahmed Hassan: Now that's what I call a blog. Thank you for the insight into everything blog. I am really just begining to kinda know you guy's and don't have nearly the time that you all do to blog read blogs etc. My part/role is extremely complex and I wont bore or enetertain you with it ,but will do what I can to be the link between the blog community as a whole and with all the integrity that I posses bring this log home flight into a smooth and beatiful landing so that the experience for all will be memorable and the Home itself will be such a jewel.
That being said. We all have to remember that this project this Blog cabin AKA Beautiful Log Home is a real community based project. With decisions not being made by any one individual but all of us. DIY, myself,RIVR media, Chris and Simon, Barna, Rustic, Numerous (to say the least) bloggers, Watson etc.
The kicker is that while all of us play a part in this project not one of us can make all the decisions. Can you say democracy.
This is an extremely unique way of building a home and is going to be awesome by the time it's complete. That's another thing, not one of us alone can put on the brakes, the show must go on. In spite of sometimes the show must go on.
1.The arched windows are going in next week, sometimes we are bouncing around and the cabin cam is limited to the front of the house. those 2x4's are temporary
2. Tomorrow I'll talk with Chris and Simon about any other changes to verify that in fact there aren't any.
3. If and when things do need to change, please do respond to Watson and myself so that we can inform all.
4. Rain barrels catch water from down spouts, are filled up and have a hose bib on the bottom side that can be connected to a water hose. They are an alternative water source possibly for watering garden, to water uphill does't seem very practical, and neither does having a single stage compost bin, composting takes work and effort to generate compost. Other wise its just a nothing in the yard taking up space. Landscape lighting on the other hand is not only valuable in the evening for aesthetics but also is very practical. I agree most lights including the ones in the picture are very unimpressive and along the lines of useless but ther are other solar lights that charge a battery via solar then the battery powered lights illuminate in the evening, this is the type of product I'll be researching and would like to see here. Since it's winning I dont mind spending my time checking out whats available. If America voted for the other choices I wouldn't even waste my time researching or whining about it I would simply move onto the next item needing to be taken care of. ( I'm sorry for the long read, it's my last one of the eve. so figured I 'd go all out. Lastly Erin, Thanks for your passion and keeping it real, I wouldn't want you any other way .

BlognBob, Dolly and George Jones would be great especially my gal Dolly but we could also go with Reba (that redhead is hot and funny I think you would get along mighty fine!). For us gals Brad Paisley or Keith Urban would be really nice (even if both are married). And if you haven't noticed I knew exactly what you were referring to in you blog - many more that we could consider like Billy Ray and Miley - they aren't far and will be in Tenn this summer filming a movie for Disney. That would be interesting. Wonder what Tim and Faith are doing????
Carrie Miracle I have to go back to the last page since I briefly saw something in a blog you wrote that two of our new friends are going to be on TV for the Cabin. And possibly Amy Wynn Pastor maybe one of the carpenters on our Blog Cabin - that would be so cool. Been missing seeing my gal on TLC! So this would be super. Hope this is true since she is so good and a fantastic carpenter - she can run circles around most men - BlognBob you would love this women! She know what she is doing that is for sure been watching her for years. Ahmed Hassan: Hey Erin, I'll be sure to connect you with Amy ( who likes to go by her middle name "Wynn ".
Helen Miko if I read right - you will be on camera for the Cabin - I think that is super and you deserve it for providing us with all the inside info on our cabin. Go girl!!!
Been busy with new job so tomorrow will catch up with the blogs that I have missed in the last several days.
Needed to come back to respond to BlognBob on his George Jones comment.
Take care all!

Good Morning Ahmed
This post contains an idea for the front porch. Extend the platform portion at the front door entrance to include the area beneath the two small windows. Since the roof peak is already installed, the new area will not be under cover but will eliminate the small spaces that would be difficult to plant successfully. Add outdoor electric outlet plugs under the windows for yardwork or holiday use. Continue to bring the front porch forward with this width to the overhang. Then, if the arch windows are still going to be used on the front of the cabin, begin to curve the upper platform to mimic the fan shape of the three eyebrow windows. Add wide tread steps (wide part of fan is at front edge of porch) that will balance the appearance of the home. If the arch window idea has been eliminated, then the porch could still be expanded as above but in a square or rectangle. The addition of pots filled with annuals (or pumpkins and Mums in the Fall) to add seasonal changeable color to the space. The expanded entry would also allow the needed space for a few rockers to be placed on this porch area which has been requested by several Bloggers.
The gained area beneath the expanded porch could serve as additional, always appreciated, storage areas. Removable or hinged decorative side panels could be fashioned for easy access and to meet A.C.C. requirements for containment issues.
The left side (Kitchen and Mud Room area) could be used to store large outdoor garden equipment (wheelbarrow, lawn mower, hedge clippers, leaf blower, etc), or even outdoor Christmas Decorations. This would free up space in the garage and also add to the energy efficiency of the cabin since the large overhead garage doors would not need to be opened to get to those items. The right side (M/B and garage side of house) area under the porch could be used for storage,AND, if the area was pre-wired (Per Manufacturer’s guidelines) and the access panel was installed to fold down instead of up, the space could house a Portable Chair Lift (http://www.silvercross.com/stairlifts.html or http://www.startrackslifts.com) or be ready for one if the winner/owners’ needs should dictate the installation of one.
A concrete base floor beneath the expanded porch could heave with climate changes, causing costly repairs in time. I would offer this alternative: A thick layer of packed, decomposed granite, covered with Landscape cloth, then covered with a mixture of 1 part Builder’s Sand to 1 part Diatomaceous Earth. When spread beneath the porch deck, it will allow for good drainage, and the DE will keep snakes out of the area. Snakes will not crawl across this rough mixture. Even just a band three inches wide will keep snakes from entering doors. The tiny mineral crystals in DE are sharp enough to cut through the skin of soft-bodied insects like aphids, thrips, slugs, and root maggots so they dehydrate and die. Insect eggs are also very susceptible to DE’s Dehydrating power. This flooring would make the storage area very user friendly.
I hope you can follow this vision I have in my head. I apologize for taking up your time with the Hercules story on Friday. As Erin mentioned, this Blog is a bit eclectic in content. Many of my posts contain well researched and documented information that others have found to be useful and informative for the Cabin Project … Some of my Posts are just written to give my fellow CabinHuggers a chance to grin or groan over something besides their jobs, computer glitches, or whatever frustration they may be confronted with at the moment. Then we all get back to the serious business as the off-site cabin builder team. I admit I do not 'know you’ yet, but you just seemed to be having one of those days on April 10th, and could use something else to wrap your mind around, even if just for a moment or two. I promise, Ahmed, I'll try and remember to warn you from now on if it is fact or fluff in my post.
This one: Facts
Ahmed Hassan: Thanks A.Muse, Last season I remember Amy D. saying that I was "a resevoir of knowledge", you my friend are a resevoir of knowledge. Thank you for all of the ideas and in put some of these are going to be easier than others to possibly materialize. Give me a chance to read over and look at the home so that I can really visualize all that you've stated. At the moment I'm in a metal shop in Knoxville. I'll be back on site later today.
and thanks for the heads up on story vs blog. I appreciate it.

Well, I think you are doing a great job. I do understand however about rather be outside. Especially now that spring has arrived. My magnolias are in bloom and the dogwoods, weeping cherry, and red maples are all looking gorgeous in my yard. yea. Keep up the good work. and Thank You.

Ahmed, did you see my earlier comment about using a lake pump for irrigation? In the lake areas around charlotte NC, many homeowners are allowed to pump lake water for maintaing their landscaping. This was curtailed for a while due to the drought, but is not alloed again. Will this be permitted at the Blog Cabin site?
Kepp up the good work all! Ahmed Hassan: Yes this is already something that I've been told can be done at our site so now we've just gotta do the research on what unit /hardware will be needed and were not quite to this step yet, But it is on my radar for sure.
Posted by: Tingoat at April 12, 2008 8:34 AM
Thanks, Ahmed, for all the explanations. See, you really have gotten the hang of it. (In spades, considering your response to Erin's blog!)
All the confusion regarding the windows, doors, etc. started w/Darlene Branim's blog of February 14 describing some things which did not appear on the final revisions and some things on apparent dwg revisions which did not seem to appear on the ground. I just attributed it to the job already being in production when revisions got to factory floor.... I dunno!
Appreciate your research into solar exterior lighting. Think the resistance comes from folks not realizing that the quality of lighting fixtures in their local home center store may be significantly less than that available in a professional lighting store. Same thing often happens w/plumbing fixtures and who knows what else? I'm trusting you to pick something that will provide many years of beauty and safety for nighttime navigation of the lot. After all, we don't want to trip and fall while we're headed down to water's edge at 5:00 a.m. to catch them while the fish are biting.
(Or Helen or Sally - when do the fish there bite the best?)Ahmed Hassan: Connie, you guys have been great! Without you truly sharing your concerns comments and everything else, we wouldn't truly know what direction all of you bloggers want us to go with this build.
WhIle on one hand like I said the show must go on, I am sharing these ideas, questions, concerns and issues in general with all of the folks on my side so that even the items not posed as vote issues can be taken into account and addressed in some kind of compromise that works for all. Ihave no problem asking those in charge and communicating as best I can what the masses desire.(within reason)
Posted by: Connie at April 12, 2008 8:58 AM
Dear Ahmed,
Thank you for your fast response it was very much appreciated especially on the windows in the front - we have been asking about this for a while. That is not to say that Watson was negligent in getting back to us on this (I don't feel he was by any means) since he has been excellent in providing information and putting up with us over the last several months! I am aware of how the water barrel works since I was lucky enough to catch this on "Ask this Old House" that is shown on DIY now. I also know that this is not difficult to install by oneself either. Big fan of This Old House and have watched it from the beginning when it was Bob Vila and Norm Abrams. Love the fact that it now on DIY! Since I have watch Blog Cabin from it's beginnings I know that it takes many voices and opinions to put this house together and that you will have your hands full over the next several months just as Amy did last year! I wish you good luck since as I stated one of us (not necessary a blogger) will win this beautiful cabin - although I am praying that it is one of the many bloggers that I have met here who wins!!!
I need to make a correction and issue an apology to A. Muse since I gave BlognBob credit for the story on the racoon instead of A. Muse our story writer.
I started a new job 2 weeks ago and unfortunately when I wrote the blog last night I was already going on 21 hours but now that I am bright and bushy tail I have seen my error and so want to be sure that A. Muse gets credit.
The rocker and the adirondack chair are neck and neck in the voting - we need more votes for that Rocker. Having had both,(since they both are popular in the Northeast) the adirondack chair may look comfortable but trust me after a while of sitting in it the back hurts and they are difficult to get out of whereas the rocker is comfortble no matter how long you sit in it and so much easier to get out so put those votes in for the Rocker!!!! Great to rock a child to sleep in also. And though the solar lights are ahead in voting like Clive I still think the composter or the water barrel are the better choice. That is not to say that the solar lights will not look nice to begin with but seem to lose their "glow" over time!
Since I started my new job I have had many things to do (workwise that is everything else except my prep work for my garden are on hold) and once again I have work to do this weekend at home so if I am going to accomplish all that I have I must be going.
Hope all enjoy this beautiful "Spring" day - we have warmer weather and sun after showers yesterday (Helen M. this is in CT your old stomping grounds!). Take care and Cabincraver2008 hope you are doing better - we miss you but know you will be back soon!
Erin
Ahmed Hassan: Thanks Erin, Since the lights seem to be making their way to the winners circle, I will do my best to make sure that the actual product installed is something that truly works and works well. Enjoy the weekend!

Carrie, love the suggestions of the slide and climbing rope along with the hammocks and swings for us. I think we should also add a fireman's pole since that would be great fun as well. The tree fort would be a must but don't think the Association would allow it - too bad though.
Posted by: Erin at April 12, 2008 11:35 AM
The cabin is spectacular with clean, simple lines enhanced by the beautiful surroundings! Kudo's to the teamwork that has brought it this far. I saw my first log home, a Honka Log Home, 13 years ago in Finland and was very impressed with the craftsmanship and design. This log home is definitly in the same class. I can't wait to see how it continues to evolve and the landscaping to come. The wood furniture I think will hold up a little better than the metal with rust issues and lends itself more to the rustic feel. Keep up the good work!
Posted by: Susan Carlson at April 12, 2008 11:59 AM
Hey Ahmed, Are you truly allowed to vote?
I guess I can live with the path lights. We couldn't have path lights because I kept my cat on a rope and she would wrap around the lights. Had to put her to sleep last month (1 month short of 21) so now we can put out the path lights. Note to Muse, Our neighbor's dog was naughty until they got him a little brother. Turns out he was lonely.
The rain barrels are only $150.00 at Menards (haven't seen the half barrel at Home Depot) so it really won't be too much of an add on if it is allowed by the association. Do you have small bullheads to put in them?
A really good composter would cost a bit more, be easier to tumble and might be secure against bears but probably not raccons with those nimble fingers.
Is someone researching those drawer pulls? LLL
Ahmed Hassan: Yes I can absolutely vote but of course will not be able to enter the drawing to actually win the Log home. I have a real hard time calling this place a cabin.

Thank You Erin for your wonderful and all inclusive post. That was very thoughtful of you to take into consideration all at hand. And it is also very nice to see such a nice response as well.
Since it does appear the solar lights seemed to outwheigh things at this point, at least there is reassurance that these will not be the clearance sale variety / Or Clive's lawnmower mulching targets.
There are few sounds that truly emminate with such vibrance of pure emotion as that all too familiar cruching sound of a lawnmower grinding a missing toy, sprinkler head , or in this case and solar light into a refuse of recylable material in a microsecond. Oh, the days of spring and summer ..when will you grace our lives again?
And Oh yes...Ahmed your greatness, please no grass to mow.

Ahmed -
As several have suggested in the other thread, how about offering us a choice of water toys versus some other optiohs, e.g. ramps or dumbwaiters. I only voted in the water toy category because it was there.

Ahmed,
Thank-You for all that you do, for the Cabin and for us bloggers. You seem wonderfully openminded and humble. You are far more patient than I, and once again, Thanks! This is my only blog site. I just couldn't resist joining in this year.
The cabin looks spectacular already and the best is yet to come. By that I mean the landscaping. Landscaping has the power to give the cabin the "WOW" factor. I'm another person hoping for the use of boulders and rock in general. I'm not in the least worried though. I knew as soon as you said you would save them to be used from the beginning that the landscaping would have the "WOW" factor. Since it looks like the solar lights are going to be in, how bout using a spotlight on a huge boulder?
I have a very steep driveway and its not even long. It does present a problem in the winter with parking. If we don't salt the driveway, we cannot use it. My truck ended up in the middle of the street a few times our first winter here.
I am so glad those low flow shower heads did not win. It takes me 10 times longer to rinse my hair with those. I absolutely hate them. Not to mention you can't even get a relaxing shower massage with them.
Can anyone tell me how to get rid of moles that have ruined my yard? Does anyone know a way to eliminate slugs and snails? I have a sprinkler system so diotomaceous earth is not an option. Any help would be appreciated. Ahmed Hassan: For snails, look for snail bait that is rated for use around pets, or pet safe, typically the ingredient used in these is iron phosphate wich seems to deal with the snails and fertilizes the plants.

Wow, the home is sure looking great! I can't wait until your next tour of the inside, Ahmed and Watson!
Ahmed, thank you so much for your answers and quick posting of blogs! It's so much easier now to keep up with the conversation. You are much appreciated!!!!
I love some of the ideas for the front porch. I have no vision or such things, but I do know that I would like to have the porch go all the way to the walls on the sides and wrap around the front so that windows are easy to get to so they can be cleaned easily! I currently live in a home with windows too far above the ground to reach and I find it very difficult to clean them.
I also think the under porch storage ideas are wonderful. A person can never have too much storage area!
I'm going to try to blog more often because I'd love to be part of the big celebration at the end of all this! LOL I so have the urge right now to hook up the fifth wheel and take a vacation out there so I could see the cabin up close and personal. If I had the money, I'd do just that!

Thanks for getting back with the bloggers, I know it's not the same as working outdoors but you did get back with them. Enjoyed reading them, well it's time to go vote now.

so ive switched over to the rockers. but really confused about the out door green thing. i have a tumbling composter and it does work but does also require some work you have to screen that stuff . i dont know if a racoon could get it open tho . sometimes i have trouble with that. so since i live in az i liked the rain barrel but you can get a bunch of rain off a roof in a short time to over flow that thing. so now will prob vote for the lites again [i feel so fickle]
as far as the water toy i doubt i would even blow it up except for the party :).
also awhile back i did suggest some skylites in the porch roof esp on the bedroom side i fear its going to be dark
thank you ahmed for getting back with us about those worrisome windows . we are a pickie bunch. but guess its bloggin rights, everyone comes from a different place. and if i won this and they painted a rug on the floor i would treasure it as the art it is.
god bless all esp cabincraver and erika . we are such a "family"

" Huh? what did I say was illegal, I can't remember, ??? was it about jumping in the lake? No you didn't think I meant.... Uh uh, nope not me. don't swim, will learn if I win though. I just want swings and slides for the kids. A fun place for them to play.. And I said I would do that if I was lucky enough to win.
Ahmed, you didn't finish your last comment to me or was that a scolding :( for too many outlandish ideas for you all to do! sorry..
Oh! by the way did I tell you A. muse described what I was thinking so much better than I did about the front entrance porch. Now you have 2 votes for the semi circled front porch. Matching our 1/2 circle windows. It would also be pretty to put 1/2 circle flowerbed or rock garden under each of the bedroom and mudroom jut outs. I like blognbob's boulder tier idea also.. I can't wait to see what happens with that front entrance porch and yard.
Please guys remember to put easy care plants in the landscaping. So people can enjoy their lake home and have a little room left in them to personalize themselves with favorites.
Erin: you are so sweet and a great blog neighbor.
Good luck with your new job. I'm looking forward to that blog neighbor & crew! Maybe a potluck & bbq-swim-hang out- get to know everyblogger party. Or a guess who is who Party at the blog cabin should one of us get blessed to be the winners. Let's not forget Blognbob and Clive are to stay out of the kitchen we don't want them slipping anything red-hard stuff onto the drink table and definitely no geoducked sushi. oooh! you got to watch that video Ahmed, funny but gross!
Helen brings the brownies we know they are crowd pleasers since Ahmed has begged for more already and the sunteas will be misty and amuse. I'm not much of a cook, but would love to help decorate the party tables and bring plenty of paper plates & paper goods. Let's try to keep the salty foods way down though. Had to go to the dr today found out my blood pressure is way up. Put me on blood pressure meds. Only time I had problems was when I was pregnant in the last few weeks, that was 3 years ago and it went away fairly quick. But now I know why I have been having so many darn migrains. Well just good encouragement to exercise a little more and eat healthier. Been trying on that end but when you got kids junk food mocks you quite often.. Well I'll let you all go And Ahmed I like solar lights, I think you could come up with some really cool new & innovative ones that maybe no one has ever been intoduced to. You probably have a wide selection to choose from that we have never seen.
Well gotta go rest a while head thumping and I'm bushed. I'll probably be back later. Blogcabin is my refuge and my relaxer when stress hits. Considering I'm hooked on diy blogcabin and my blog buddies. Happy Healthy spring to you all. :)

|~ ~\~ | ~\~ |~ Trying to send Ms Cabincraver and you all some spring flowers to cheer you up. But sure if it will work out though.Ahmed Hassan: Carrie, I was saying that a slide going from the top deck down to the water would probably be on the illegal side but didn't really take you literal with this and understand that your simply talking about entertainment for all of us kids included.

Greetings everyone! Been behind the times for a couple days and am just trying to catch up. Having our basement finished and has been a priority this week. Just the stress of that has set me back, leaving only the energy to vote. Today, this latest thread caught my eye...still need to catch up on the last one. Wow, how do those of you who work keep up with the blogs? Speed readers I guess...
Sounds like we will never really know what happened to the changes included in the infamous "Darlene" post and should just put it to rest and move on...just my 2-cents...
I know this is "Blog" Cabin but we must remember we are the minority in the voting community. Should our votes count for more, well, maybe so, but they don't this year. So the winners are the winners (this blogger doesn't share in the conspiracy theory). It appears solar lights are there. Hopefully Ahmed can find an awesome new product (selfish of me but need to know so I can pick one out for my own home). The other options can be added very easily if the winner so chooses, right? Although, I will do more research before adding a composter to our yard, (grizzlies are to be enjoyed from a distance).
Ahmed, looks like you are taking the diplomatic approach and probably can't tell us what actually transpired with the "changes". You certainly seem to be gaining ground with the computer. I try to remind myself you are physically there on the worksite and can see what we can't and you use your professional judgement and post those opinions when responding. Keep up the good work!
The cabin-cam shot I see every day doesn't give me much to go on. I wonder if others are viewing something different? I can't even enlarge the photo for a closer look. :) The porches do seem to dominate the front view and agree something creative needs to happen. Log accents are a definite. Will keep my thinking cap on...
Ahmed, will we get to see the rear of the home soon from the lake side???? Please, please, please. A mini video walk around would be wonderful...
PS: a.Muse, do love your little anecdotes, keep 'em coming. Sally, thanks for letting me know the bears aren't visiting the lake- but not far away is my thought on that. I'm not one of the die-hard bloggers (for various reasons such as life getting in the way) but have partaken since the beginning this year and am enjoying getting to know all of you. Sorry such a long post today, my hands and brain are actually in sync for once. :)

Hey
the voting is going along great and this years cabin should be fantastic. Know alot of people are voting for the solar patio lights, but how about puting some solar panels for the home to help with the engery bills. It would help whoever wins the home with the power that the home will use in the long run down the road.

Ahmed,
Thank you for all your responses. Since you have cleared up the problem with the windows, thank you so much for that. Can you tell us if the opening on the garage side of the master bedroom is a door? It looks like it is going to be a single door rather an a double window. Darlene had said that a double window would be there instead of a door in February.
I like other bloggers know there is so much to do and stay on top of and we do appreciate all that you guys do.
The log home is looks so wonderful and I'm sure with spring being here it is great! I would love to be there to work, soak up all that nature has to share and just enjoy this with all of you!
I also do not think of this as a log cabin but a log home. My husband and I would love to retire there, like many others.
Baskets of Blessings & Happy Blogging

Hi Ahmed, First I would like to thank you for all that you do, and for taking the time to answer our questions. I so appreciate your patience with us....it is just that we all love you and now we are the ones who need to learn patience. We are so many and you are one! We are like those pesty ticks, you get one off and then there is another one! LOL At any rate I think you are doing an awesome job and I personally am grateful for you taking your busy time to answer.
A Muse, So love your story, and I love Hercules, he was just lonely and needed companionship. Poor little guy. Glad everything is going better for you and our dear Hercules! :-)
Erin, I think you are the most loving Leprechaun! You really put together the atmosphere of this wonderful blogging family. Thank you for that!
Tingoat, I love your idea of the irrigation pump...at first I thought about the cistern with the gray water, but this is even better. Love it!
Ahmed...Again thank you...I am so excited about your incorporating the natural rock for the landscaping. I can't wait to see what is coming. I do want to say that I was voting for the composter, however I do have the solar lights at our home. I personally think that they are practical and a great safety measure for night time. I have mine lined up with our driveway three on each side. So when driving on the road you can easily see where to turn into our drive. We live out in the country where there is not lighting. I have had this set now for 8 years and they are still working fine. I still like the composter, they are safe with animals because they are sealed and there is no odor. I will be grateful and happy with either. Wishing our Blogging Family a wonderful day. Beautiful Sunshine to shine down on you... :-)
Cabincraver ...Lifting you up before our heavenly father in prayer...Keep looking up!

Hi Keight! I am screaming the warning to you......LOL so that you can be informed about these ticks. You had mentioned that you wanted to know about Lymes Disease, and tick information. I just noticed that my blog to you is on the other thread, so you may want to go back and check it out. I didn't want you to think that I didn't get back to you with your questions. :-) Have a great day! Heading South

Hi…..
Today I took a ride over to see the Cabin (haven’t seen it for a few days) and the roof is on all the deck and they have begun to shingle the roof. It was about 10:30 this morning and with all the beautiful sun shine we have today the deck is not a bit dark. The dormers have now been finished out really look neat.
Also today they were filming …. need to mark my calendar to see where this shows up in the show. Saw a neighbor who walks the walking path that is located all through the area and asked about how long it was – about 6 miles – and there is a beautiful view no matter which way you look.
This morning at 8:00 a.m. sharp they started the fishing tournament – you can always tell by the sound of all the boats taking off from the park on Watts Bar. The tournaments take place from about April 1st through October.
When we had our dock built a little over a year ago – the permit that we obtained from TVA indicated that we were going to put one it. We have already started it up this year and use it for watering and etc. It really works well for us and saves a lot on the water bill. We also put in a wood burning stove in our basement and have been using it for the past two winters to help heat the house. This area is known for the logging industry so it is easy to obtain wood. The plantings that we have put in we have tried to make sure that the deer would not eat as they are know for coming up to the houses in our area and helping them selves.
When the sun goes down here the stars give quite a show for us. Right now at about 11:00 p.m. the Big Dipper is right over the house and we have seen quite a few shooting stars as well.
Retired to Watts Bar!
SallyAhmed Hassan: I must have missed you today but hope to see you next time your in the neighborhood.

Ahmed, I agree with you, calling this a Cabin does not give it justice. It is a beautiful Log Home...Ahmed Hassan: Thank you! Ted with Rustic Builders really frowns when we refer to this home as a cabin, I think the next one should be called "Blog Home"

Mea Culpa, I stay away from this machine for a couple of days and it takes half the afternoon to catch up!
Ahmed, thank you for all you do, and it's great to see you getting even more involved in the blogging!
Helen- good show with the sugar!
Clive, the City of St. Petersburg and Pinellas County are doing trials with that porous resin compound at this moment! Interestingly, the fellow that owns the company here in Tampa originated in Old Blighty, that was evident from his first spoken word on the telly last night.
A. Muse, I am the doghouse today. Loki is miffed (he's my white Lab, age 6) as I had to wash his blanket. He HATES that. I am concerned about taking him on the ten hour drive to Spring City, we have bought a car crate, but...any of you have any advice? I know he's going to love it once he gets there! Anyone want to lay odds how long it will take before he has his first skunk encounter? The first animal I saw when we viewed the lot for the first time, before we even bought it, was a skunk!
At some of the subdivisions we viewed when land seeking up on Watts Bar last year had installed sewer systems that were routed into holding tanks, and these tanks were pumped out and the contents trucked away somewhere (where, I have to wonder?)I assume this is what Lakefront Estates has done. We found these communities all had high HOA annual assessments. What is the annual homeowners assessment at Lake front Estates?
Oh, A. Muse - how is Hercules doing? Is there some lab puppy in his mix? Sure sounds like it!
Take care, all!

Hi Erin. Yes, I'll tow the piano (somehow) and bring the players (my wife and daughter) too. My son and I will hand out the song sheets (you really don't want to hear us play or sing).
More sleet an snow today. That cabin is really beginning to pull us.

OK Ahmed. I'll reserve further comments on solar lights and trust your judgement. As you say, they are winning handsomely and ther's no point in researching other options when I'm sure your time is already cramped. I'll be very interested to see what you come up with. Just a small question, with the deeds and covenants of Lakeview Estates proscribing unshielded lights outside the cabin will they even allow solar lights or any other outdoor lights other than shielded porch lights? Ahmed Hassan: Good question, I'll find out from the owner of Lake Front.
We've already had to get clearance to intrude a bit on the easment on both sides of the property just to be able to fit everything.
Posted by: Clive at April 12, 2008 4:04 PM
This is my first blog for the cabin. I love the ideas being sent out by the bloggers. My favorite is for the access from the lakeside up to the deck.
I was also curious about how many windows there will be on the lakeside of the cabin and the size of the windows to truly capture the view.
I voted for the lights for practical reasons and aesthetics. I believe Erin will find the best for the cabin.
Erin, can you tell me again how we'll be able to enter the sweepstakes for the cabin?
Keep up the good work.

Hey Ahmed,
" Thank You so very very much " for taking of your time to come in on Saturdays to speak with us. I am certain all present surely appreciate your going the extra mile for us. Me personally, I would be happy knowing you are taking your own personal time for the weekend.
You are doing a brilliant job. And I know the best is still yet to come when you get into your element of landscaping.
Love the thought of some evergreens or pines to cover the area and provide the additional privacy year round. If ever you have viewed this area from Google Earth , or just glanced across to the island you will see just how many trees were taken out for this development. Perhaps another local building site getting ready to clear, might have some free trees to transplant.
A horseshoe pit would be fun addition for outdoors, and might rather fit and blend with everything too.
Perhaps you and the crew will need to go up to Dollywood to gather some additional local inspiration for a truly Tennesee Log Home .
Having never been there I can only guess that it might provide some interesting lanscaping ideas for this neck of the woods.
Perhaps you can meet with Dolly and invite her on down for a sit. Of course you will need have some highback rockers available.
Erin,
I do love my country music as well as other types , but to be perfectly honest I really haven't been able to listen to it or keep up with it as I used to , as my wife and kids are into other types of music. Yes, I know about Reba. Yep...wouldn't mind seeing her myself. As for all the others...well, I am abit behind in everything at the moment.
And Oh Ahmed , careful fishing with Clive, you might come out on the short end of the stick measuring fish with his metric ruler.

Hi Carrie Miracle. You would not want the "milky-red drink" at any party, I can guarantee. However, although it would probably make almost all readers go green at even the mention of the ingredients, please rest assured that there is no alcohol involved at all. I may be speaking out of turn here but I believe BlognBob doesn't drink alcohol. However, I can state unequivocally that I do, in moderation of course and never while even contemplating driving or operating a boat.

Maggie, not sure when the voting will begin - normally the voting is going on when they start showing the Blog Cabin on TV so I would recommend just checking the DYI website since they will post it. I am on here every week checking something out - last year you could have DIY send an email to let you know when the voting would begin. I get the DIY newsletter and it will be in there also.
Ahmed - you can set me up with Wynn any day any time. And yup I know she likes to go by Wynn but I was being respectful. I have missed seeing her on TLC and was wondering what she has been up to lately so this is fantastic!!! If I win the Cabin Wynn has to be there. Words cannot describe her talent - it would be great to be able to work with her just to get tips on carpentry!!!! She is awesome. You can't tell that I love Wynn can you Ahmed???
I just saw that Chris Grundy was at the Cabin also - awesome. I love his show with "Cool Tools" since it is so interesting and neat!!! My husband tapes his show when we are busy so we don't miss anything. As you can see Ahmed I am a huge fan of DIY TV - it sounds like I watch alot of TV but actually with my job it is mostly weekends when I get to catch up on my favorites and thank god for our DVR - it allows me never to miss my shows on DIY, TLC, HGTV, A&E, and History.
Carrie please add my vote with yours on your suggestion about the porch and the walkway up to the front door - loved it and I think it would look fantastic! Maybe we can vote on this?????
BlognBob I cannot believe that you do not know who Brad Paisley or Keith Urban are and you call yourself a country fan!!! Shame on you. Brad Paisley (I'm Still a Guy) is married to actress Kimberly Williams who plays on "According to Jim" (ABC). Keith Urban who recently purchased a new farm in TN and a home in CA is married to Nicole Kidman (former Mrs. Tom Cruise-frankly I think she has the better husband now!). And you can't tell me you don't know who Billy Ray Cyrus (he has been around for some time now) is since his daughter Miley (Hannah Montana) is the hotest thing going for young teens with her show on Disney (dad also is on the show). Just don't ask Billy Ray to dance (Dancing w/the Stars) not his strong suit good thing he can sing. The Cyrus's have a home in TN. I can understand not know about fireflies but Brad Paisley, Keith Urban and Billy Ray Cyrus???? Come on now. I guess I should have said Kenny Rogers then you would know! lol
Got to run. Take care all. Cabincraver if you are reading this I hope you are feeling better and say "Hi" to favorite daughter Erika for me. No need to respond just get well soon.

Hi…..
Ahmed – thank you for the invitation. Being that we live on the road up from the ten slip boat dock on the point, we will take a walk over and visit when you are all their. Would be fun to visit while you all are working to see what all you are doing.
Someone mentioned a stone wall – up on Route 68 on you way to Crossville, there are places that sell the stone of this area. If you continue on to Crossville you will see the Home Stead homes that were built of this stone and some go back as far as the Great Depression. The stone is an color of the earth.
Retired!

Hey Ahmed,
Is the basement going to have something different that we are yet aware? I know we pick everything apart and I also know how REALLY annoying that can be too. Been there, done that! But, it would be really , super duper , extra special nice if per chance we might be able to see the final basement plans when you catch your breath from all this. If you can.
I so miss being on the construction site. The smell of fresh lumber, new materials, cedar chips, and that crisp morning air. Especially along the lake. I must repent that I truly envy you being there.
You probably haven't had a chance to really look at the canoe in a box. But that sounds like a lot of fun to me.
I also have agreed pretty much from the start that this is far more than a Cabin. It is truly a beautiful HOME ! And as far as I am concerned it far exceeds that of all of the other homes that might "claim" to be dream homes. You have all really outdone yourselves with this one. And I am truly thankful and humbled to be just a tiny voice in this whole wonderful process. I know..humility? Me? I have tried to fight it. It is folks like all of yourselves that truly make our Country the Best in the world. Nothing personal Clive and Sheila, I would love to visit the UK and the North and SA too.
Of course , there are a lot of us poor folks that are hoping and praying for a possible cash incentive to offset the tax burden that our Great Uncle Sam will be coming to see about after the party is over.
Being with a wonderful wife of another quite amazing culture, whos musical likes differ greatly from my own at times, I can understand if you might also not be too keen on the country music. But them Tennessee folks up around Nashville just might be willing to put on a bit of a show for the cause of raising a tax pay off donation for such very lucky winners so they won't have to turn around and sell this, THE REAL DREAM HOME !. Especially if such a benefit includes being at such a beautiful Log Home on a lake. That would be one heck of a party.(Not to mention some nice additional publicity) It would truly put all the other home shows to shame. I can almost smell the fresh fish and barbeque on the grill. And Helen there with her wonderful strawberry rhubarb pie.(With sugar on top)Not to mention all of my wonderful blog family that I do love and care about.
Do you do the whitewater thing Ahmed? Me, I love just paddling around the lake. No motor boat. And simply enjoying the sound of the water slapping against the boat and listening to the wildlife around.
Thank You for making our lives fun Ahmed.
Posted by: BlognBob at April 12, 2008 9:34 PM
Ahmed! Short and sweet. I know you are busy. I love the suggestion someone made before about using some of the trees that had to go for benches around the property. I also hope that the tile you pick will be porcelain and not ceramic. Just due to the fact that the color goes all the way through, it's stronger, and it’s beautiful!!!
Thanks for all your hard work!

Hey Sheila. That's interesting news about the porous resin. My brother-in-law in the UK is a landscaper and arboriculturist (tree surgeon) and has used it in a few designs he has built for people. It really does look good as they can incorporate almost anything into the resin to give the finish to fit the yard design (we call it the garden - not yard, but it's the same). Also interesting to know the nationality of the person marketing it here. You may not have realized this yet but we're sneaking back over the pond slowly, keeping a low profile, marrying, intermingling and then one day. !!!!!
PS. I'm guessing Ahmed is working overtime on the blog for a while. Thanks Ahmed. It's really good to see the blog move along and be refreshed so often. However, I know from experience just how much work this entails. Best get an intern.
Posted by: Clive at April 12, 2008 10:30 PM
Hi Ahmed, I'm curious if you're considering the multilevel ramp from the kitchenside screen porch towards the lakeshore. It will be a much more convenient route as compared to traveling to the first level stairs, down and then thru the basement to get out to the back yard and then to the lake.
We owned what was once the mainhouse of a Minnesota fishing resort and found that a beach really needs a dock with a shorestation +/or a boathouse, for boat, water toys, canoe, and equipment storage.
We still have a 1958 ChriCraft wooden runabout that would look so good docked at the blog cabin.
Please keep in touch about "access" to the lake.
It feels so good to be part of what you do, thanks so much. John and Pat

Ahmed,
Sally mentioned that the stars are bright in that area. Have you considered adding a telescope to the cabin? Star-watching can be a wonderful relaxing family activity, IF you have dark skies. I am guessing that that area has very dark skies. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE.
Posted by: Earalav at April 12, 2008 11:28 PM
Ahmed...I don't know if yins have gutters going up, but if not...You may want to consider the the roof is going to have runoff in about 8 areas in the front ( 4 points on the left and 4 points on the right of the steps)from the different peaks.
Could get real wet or muddy off each side of steps! Just something to consider in the front when deciding what to do with the porch area.
PS...Did you ever find out about the grounding w/ metal roofs, or a backup generator?
Posted by: Susan (from OH) at April 13, 2008 12:51 AM
Ahmed...I was also wondering, are yins going to make the drive wide enough to get the vehicles turned to get into the garage (how wide/area are the support structures for the deck...over/in front of garage doors)
Angling could get tricky (wouldn't want to miss and knock down the deck)

again, the rain barrel is STILL 1500 votes BEHIND solar path lights.
i'm guessing that EVERY BODY that made such a fuss about getting one was just talking out their ---.
i can see if one or two or even 50 people suggested that option.
but i saw it suggested for a few weeks
Posted by: ADAM bailey at April 13, 2008 1:29 AM
Ahmed, I voted for the rain barrel and was reading blogs this morning.(4am) I would like to comment on something you said about lighting and solor power, and the rain barrels. Since water barrel's will catch water from down spouts to later be distributed by gravity through a water hose. We would assmue it would be next to the house. The barrel's are an alternative water source possibly for watering the garden which would be more than likly be around the house and in the back yard. The house is built on a leveled lot/pad even though the rest of the lot slopes to the lake. I know you feel that watering uphill does't seem very practical but the perimeter of the house is level. Also for the amount of water a single barrel holds it would water a flower garden on the perimeter or even better a small vegtable/herb garden very nicely. On the solar lighting the battery for storage you mentioned would work nicely. What about a solar pump for the water barrel? One last thing I agree having a single stage compost bin would not work well, I have tried on and still have one. It is a LOT of work.

hello ahmed,I like watching diy, hgtv, and all the informative shows.have learned a great deal fom watching all of you. My dad built houses for 40 years and I know how hard of job that can be. When he built something it had to be perfect. read some blogs today some good some not. just keep doing what you know is best for all.Last years cabin to me was great, wish i could have won. The cabin plan chosen is perfect for the land and site. The storage of the inflatables is of concern for me is there going to be a garage since out buildings seem to be a problem for the lakeview estates. will be watching up coming shows. thank you for all you chris and simon are doing.Ahmed Hassan: There is tons of storage in the garage and more than likely we'll have additional storage elsewhere as well.

Hey Y'all, The site cam is the greatest and the progress on the roof system is really neat to see. What a great cabin this is going to be! I wonder how the crappie fishing is in the lake...does anyone know?

Ahmed, Don't worry you guys are doing great. I can't imagine having to answer to all of us and still get the job done. I read the blogs just about every day and it has turned into a big blogging family. Hey, You should get all the blogger's to come help you build the cabin. Although that would probably turn into a big mess with everyone having different opinions. All of the features are great and for the person that is so lucky to win such a beautiful luxury log cabin for some reason does not like the features they can always change them "if they win". I personally would'nt change a thing. You all have worked very hard on. Erin, Thanks for comment about the tree fort. I thought I was the only one that thought it would be a neat idea to build a Blog tree house, but after reading all the blogs I to realized that the association would probably not allow it but maybe for the next Blog cabin. I have asked Watson if they would be building another Blog cabin but I guess they don't really know yet?

ON A NEGATIVE NOTE:It has become very frustrating; when trying to vote on my favorite product; I'm being blocked by spam over the submit icon button; and at other times over the whole selection; which forces me to exit; and loose my opportunity to vote for that day; as when I return into begin again; it states I can only vote once a day.
ON A POSITIVE NOTE: I thank the DIY Network for this wonderful opportunity to vote on these product lines; as well; being given the opportunity to win it. I do hope it's me - SandyAhmed Hassan: Sandy I'm sorry to hear that your having problems with the voting, I can relate. I'm finally comfortable voting blogging and everything but it's taken me weeks to get to this point, not to mention tutoring sessions with Watson to learn how to navigate my way around the site. Heck! I'm even helping him now with keeping up with all of the blogs.
I guess I should find out first whether your voting in agreement with how I am before I decide to really help you out eh? (just kidding)

As a first time blogger I wanted to weigh in on the solar lights. I purchased a fairly inexpensive($80)set of 16 lights from Sam's and have been using them for over 2 years. Even with a moderate amount of sun they burn thought the night with a decent amount of light. The copper color really is attractive. Love the Bolg Home. I am looking forward to the show.

The idea of more light is great, but what about solar tubes?? Very easy to add, very eco-friendly, less invasive than regular skylight products.. lots of reflected light, even in winter and in the trees, no huge bump or slab-look in the integrity of the roofline..
I also think the front storage area is a great idea.. any person with hands could put shelving on the wall for small things like a fire extinguisher, bug sprays, etc..
ISN'T THIS FUN?? It is like daddy is building us a treehouse and we get to stand back and tell him what we wish we could have!!!
Also, GREAT MINDS DO NOT ALWAYS THINK ALIKE!! Great job all you bloggers and staff!

Ahmed,
Home is coming along swimmingly! I don't often get the chance to check in on-line, as, like you, I am not really into sitting in front of a computer for any amount of time. I like some of the ideas the bloggers are posting... especially a screened porch. Mosquitoes are no fun! I still think the place needs a treehouse. Something fun and whimsical would be very appropriate, since hopefully a family (my family would be nice) wins the cabin.
Looking forward to more!!!!

I do like the solar fixtures, but the last thing I want when I try to look up at the night sky is more lights,, that is why I would have a home in that environment! With a porch light, firepit, light glow from interior spaces, I do not need more lights! If there is anything I need to do at night(I believe there is indoor plumbing) I would use a flashlight! LOL! As far as the driveway, my headlights work great for that too..
The unpainted adirondack chairs would rock! I have severe spinal arthritis and these are the most comfortable chairs to sit in, as well as get out of! I sit in one for hours in comfort, no cushions! With the matching footstool, there is nothing better than propping the feet and legs up and sipping a frosty beverage and reading a good book, looking at the surroundings with your binoculars, or just listening to .... birds, water lapping on the bank, or... silence!
I voted for the cabana because it offers the most practical space, there would be less chance for serious injury( worked with swimming/diving/jumping caused paralysis patients) and protects one from the sun.
I think Clive has some great ideas; maybe a college of engineering would have ideas or be testing materials that could be used for a safe and durable driveway surface? Not too sure on that one..
As far as the drawer pulls, I chose the round art design from a practical standpoint:If I ever decided to change the pulls down the road, there would only be one screw hole. If bar pulls are installed, then you would always have to select that type,, with round, all one needs to do is add another hole IF they find a bar pull they prefer over the round..
being a diy'er myself, I need to look at the most economical and practical choices for replacement.
You all start packing your bags, coolers,Rv's,etc,, I am going to have a major bloggers party if I am blessed to win this beautiful work of art! I love to cook Mexican and Italian, cater too.. so get you tummys ready for a great get-together!
The first thing I want to do is yell really loud so I can hear my voice echo in those woods!! Only once, as I am sure the rest of the world would not appreciate it any more than that! Ahmed, did you notice that, when you first started on the empty lot? You all are truly artists, thank you for your passion and consideration with all on this huge, and VERY PUBLIC project! Ahmed Hassan: My pleasure, the greta thing about everyone involved in this project is that they are so passionate about what they do and really wanting to show off their skills, craftsmanship and unique products they market. We've truly got a top notch team working on all that's going on here. I voted natural adirondack too, I like the rockers, I just like the Adirondacks more.

Just thought you should know, we think you are doing a great job answering questions and do
realize how exhausing it must be.
Thanks!!!!

I have always loved adirondack chairs. They don't last long out here in the desert...where it is already over 90 degrees. The termites and sun just destroy them. When I think of adirondack chairs, I think of vacations, cooler weather, and fun loving times. That is why I am voting for these chairs! I don't remember having difficulty getting out of them, but I do remember not wanting to get out of them....not wanting to leave the big trees, water, and relaxing times.

Oh, by the way, I used a combination of the "no spam" numbers at the bottom of my message last week for a lottery ticket and won $15 for a $1 ticket!!! That was fun.

HEY! Carrie! lol, If clive is bring the piano my daughter is trained in classical she's put on a fine show. That would be sweet, if we all showed up, maybe a covered dish party! Hope someone brings that interesting tea, it's very good. Not only is there southern hospitality we northerners love to party. Got to go! church! Prayin also works.

Ahmed, what are the chances of a window in the porch (south) side of the master bath to let some light into that area?
Posted by: Clive at April 13, 2008 12:29 PM
You know, with the Garage and Man Cave taking up a lot of that basement, I really was beginning to worry about storage space too.
Thank You for clarifying that for us Ahmed! Those water toys just look huge. And I am not sure I would want to have to deflate them , only to fill them with air again. I know with my kids, I would never get away with leaving them stored away once they saw them.
At first I thought we might have lost Watson. I am glad you are still there Watson. Ahmed has been spoiling us lately.
And you know, an underground grey water reclamation system could very well be buried or place coveniently behind the said tiered boulders, rock, logs, and back fill for that front area. Thus also providing water for not only such indigenous plants, trees and flora of the front ,but perhaps also being on the uphill end it might provide enough gravity feed for a few lines towards the back as well. Clive is the expert in this area however, so I will let him fill in any blank I may have left here.
And my friend Clive is correct and not out of line at all that I do not drink, or smoke, or carry any of the other notorious habits or addictions with me any longer. Not to say that I have never. Just many years past now.
So, if there is a celebration in winning with me and my wife, it would have to be sparkling cider or something like that instead of bubbly.
Erin, yep...you caught me again! I admit, I do not know that many of those Country folks names and personal stats as I could. While I have heard of some, I was never really good at names, so I haven't bothered to keep with all of them. I just remember those I grew up hearing as my Dad was a trucker.

Oh Ahmed,
Could you please tell Clive and us what sort of tree that is in front of the left porch that has leafed out already?
That has been a question for some time.
Posted by: BlognBob at April 13, 2008 2:49 PM
I'm not sure if it's already a feature, or anyone else has suggested it, but what about screening in part of the deck/porch?
Posted by: Vanessa at April 13, 2008 3:28 PM
Ok Ahmed, I see what you mean. Just joking around with you about the water thing! I guess the water is closer to the back deck, since they raised the lake back to summer pool than I thought it would be. It's kind of hard to visualize the correct size of the back yard from the few picures we have seen. Especially now I'm thinking the water could be closer to the deck, since you thought I meant the slide should go from the deck into the water. Would that be possible? I thought the water would be too far! I just meant for the slide to go to the ground next to the deck into the backyard. Did you see Erin's idea for a firepole for the kids to slide down. How fun! I think everyone would like a try on that baby! If a fort in the yard is out of the question could you not use a little section -area under the deck to make a fort-club house area for the kids. Have a big window for puppet shows. Maybe a climbing wall up to the deck with safe ropes? Maybe a hidden door cut into the deck above with an escape ladder to the clubhouse or the firepole. That is if the underdeck area would be tall enough. Kids would love you for life, if you took the time to make them a special hang out area! I can't wait to see everybody's special touches. Tell Wynn hi for us too. I have been her fan since her debut on trading spaces. Does she have a new show coming up on diy, possibly?

Ahmed,
Thank-You for your suggestion. I tried the Ortho Slug&Snail and the affects were negligable at best. I should have mentioned I have wetlands behind my backyard.
To my fellow bloggers- Please reconsider the water toy you are voting in. The lounger and cabana are ADULT toys. Kids will love the waterpark toy and it can also be enjoyed by adults. The chances of someone getting hurt on it are slim {if positioned in the water correctly}. They have a better chance of getting hurt riding thier bike. Why? Because the majority of kids helmets do not fit correctly or are not positioned correctly to prevent the injuries they were intended to.
Is there going to be a fan on the c
