Paying Attention to the Details
Hello everyone,
This next round of voting focuses on some of the cosmetics and extras of Blog Cabin 2008. Choose a cool toy for your sunny afternoons on Watts Bar Lake, feel good about your surroundings with an outdoor green feature, relax in an adirondack or rocking chair (painted or natural), select your patio furniture style and last, but not least, choose your kitchen cabinet hardware.
Happy voting!

All of the green features are nice.
Watson: Adele, you forgot to say "First!"

"SECOND!!" :-) LOL Boy, what a nice change for voting. The tropical capana was my choice for fun and relaxation. I think we can sqeeze Clive, BlognBob, Helen, and everyone else on it; each with a fishing pole to catch fish for a fish fry dinner!! (I just pulled my knee out) Too much cleaning up Old Man Winter...I quess I over did it. By the way Clive, you cannot bring your milky red drink.... :-) Just kidding.

THIRD!
Like the composter. Is the house on a septic system? If so, no garbage disposal allowed! Composting will help reduce the trips to the dump, too.
Posted by: Sheila at April 7, 2008 2:21 PM
Wow! I love these choices. Adirondack chairs are my favorite!
Posted by: Jan in AZ at April 7, 2008 2:23 PM
Heading South. I promise not to bring that drink. I want to enjoy myself too!! I voted for the family lounger type of thing (can't remember what it was called now). We have a load of these water toys at the brother-in-laws house in NC and the only one that is regularly used (overused often) is the multi seat lounger. It's a family thing. All others are fun but this is the only one where the family can all be together and relax. Others are personal choice, especially the tow behind wave bashers, which need to be tailored to body size, shape and age of users etc. Plus you need a fairly powerful boat to tow them and there will probably be lake regs. on where and when they can be towed etc. They are pretty cheap to purchase anyway so can easily be bought later if needed.

Helllloooo DIY!
WOW......looking great and....R-E-L-A-X-I-N-G!
Okay guys, I forfeited the gardening station for your workshop... how 'bout keeping us gardeners in the loop... a compost machine would be very much welcomed! :)
Happy Logging!

I voted for the design features of the 2007 log cabin and I keep coming back to the website to see when I could enter the sweepstakes, but I could not find the entry link. And then the last time I came back to search for that entry link again, there was a winner and I asked myself when did they start entering the sweepstakes for the log cabin, because I could not find the entry link for the sweepstakes?
Posted by: Lori at April 7, 2008 3:25 PM
When can we start entering the sweepstakes for the 2008 log cabin. I seem to have missed out on entering the 2007 log cabin sweepstakes, although I did partipate in the voting of the cabin design features.
Watson: Hi Lori, the exact dates of the sweepstakes aren't set (because the production company and DIY have to adhere to the construction schedule, which can be fluid), but look for it sometime in August.
Posted by: Lori at April 7, 2008 3:29 PM
would never have tought about the composter..nice choice.
Posted by: melliott74 at April 7, 2008 3:44 PM
Gosh, even fun stuff to choose from! How awesome for the future proud owner of this dream home!
I hope the rocking chair wins because it's just easier to get in and out of and looks so cool on the porch! I'm undecided about the lawn furniture. I love the wood but feel the other may last longer. However, the other sometimes loses it's weld...so for me it's a toss up.
As for the floaties...I thought either the cabana or group lounger because not everyone has kids and they'd work for everyone. I personally would love the group floaty because we often have large gatherings at our home and it would be so much fun to own one of those!
It looks like I'm gonna lose on the composter. I would love to have one. Solar lights tend to get knocked over and missing. I also love the rain barrel, so I'd be happy with that, too. Oh shoot...who am I kidding? If I won this home, I'd be happy with whatever was included!!! :)

Hi Helen Miko …. Can I borrow a cup of sugar and ask you to do me a favor?? … I posted a plea to Watson to release the new voting choices and said “please with sugar on top” – since we have new voting choices (no, I don’t believe I was the cause of the release, but I sure am glad they are up and running) ….. Anyway…. That is why I need the sugar and a favor, too! I feel obligated to make good on my promise BUT I had no idea how to until I thought of you, dearheart! Since you mentioned you are planning on baking up some delicious brownies for the crew, you could just drop off the cup of sugar at the site and ask the crew to get it to Watson if he isn’t there! I promise to return it first chance I get, and I’ll even add a Jar of my homemade Sunshine Tea Mix for you to enjoy, too.
Hi Warren and Clive …. Thanks for your updates/insights concerning my post about the new Computer Virus. Guess it is what I do for a living that makes me believe in the old adage: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Knowing now through your comments, that it was not nearly as serious as was first believed, makes me happy. With the delay in updating postings, the people I was hoping to warn read my message a good bit after the virus had been released, and then your reassurance that it was not lethal was there for them even later. The info I posted was contained in a Memo that was issued where I work. When I checked further on the virus alert, it seemed passing on the warning to all on the Blog could prove helpful. Sorry to all for any jitters my post caused before we all got to read Warren and Clive’s insights. (Esp.: Luci, Carrie Miracle, Colleen .... sorry that I may have gotten you as worried as I was about losing computer data and such.)

For those of you who don't live or have never visited east Tennessee I have two words for you...ROCKING CHAIRS. A good friend of mine has a cabin on a beautiful lake in the Pocono Mts of
Pa. One summer when I visited she had posted on the wall of her kitchen a cartoon from the New Yorker magazine. Picture this; a couple are standing at their mailbox by the road in front of their cabin. In the front yard are two Adirondack chairs. The couple are reading a note left for them by someone. It reads- "If you know whats good for you, you'll get those Adirondack Chairs the hell out of the Poconos". I beg of all of you to reconsider this choice. DON'T LET THOSE ADIRONDACK CHAIRS IN EAST TENNESSEE. PLEASE!!!!!

Well, I've been first and I've been waaayy down the list. My favorite spot was 13. So, today I'm shooting for 13th.
Love the new features! I voted for the floating raft. You need a boat for half of the other choices and I don't plan on buying a boat. As for the composter, the rain barrel or the solar lights, I went with the solar lights. Can't you just have a compost pile? Or would a composter be quicker and/or less unsightly?
Lori, it seems like we started voting last year on Aug 1st. So maybe around that time this year. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Happy voting all ! ~Betty~
Posted by: Betty Wilcox at April 7, 2008 4:29 PM
I'd rather have the rain barrel or the composter...solar path lights are pretty useless. Not really bright enough to see by...though they ARE good for pointing out "tripping hazards." (That's what I use them for in my garden.) I voted for the big lounger as well...I don't plan on having a power boat. Canoe, kayak, rowboat, small sailboat--but no "stink pots" for us!
Posted by: Melanie See at April 7, 2008 5:06 PM
Love the new choices! Thought long and hard about the composter, then decided it looked too much like work to me. Solar lights it is!
The thing with all the slides, trampoline, etc. should last at least a couple of summers of grandkids, so it works for me. Adirondack/rockers: both seem great as long as they are natural.
This is really the greatest blog ever! Can't wait 'til we can start entering. DIY, hope you are prepared for an avalanche!
Cabincraver & Erika: still praying.

CLive: Thanks for coming to my rescue and posting (on the previous blog area) the weblinks for the electric fence. I should have remembered the info came from you in the first go round on the subject. I read that Jan's dogs have learned to 'outsmart' the containment field, but others have shown an interest in the link, so thanks again.
Also... With the Rain Barrel as one of the choices, it looks like the A.C.C. is really considering items on a House/Lot to House/lot basis and making necessary allowances as they deem appropriate ( R & C reads in part: No exposed above ground tanks for storage of fuel or water or any other substances shall be located on any Lot). Maybe a barrel for collection of water is OK within a certain size (below tank size?).
Did notice that the R & C prohibit concrete walls on exposed exterior surfaces of any dwelling (main or accessory). So all those native rocks to cover the foundation walls that are being saved will be great on the Cabin. Hope Ahmed has a strong back and lots of helpers. Maybe he could get some of us on a big travel bus to help him out with the little stuff so he can concentrate on the Big heavy stuff. DIY and other shows seem to have one or more of those big travel trailer set ups for their trips 'round the country. As long as fishing is permitted during work breaks, just point me to the sign-up sheet!
Oh.... and does anyone know how much storage space will be needed for the various water toys when not in use? Surely the development wouldn't let an owner just leave them floating in the lake behind their cabin during the summer, so storage issues will come into play (or when not in play - you know what I mean, right?) Anybody have any of the listed toys and know what it takes to maintain them?
Posted by: Keight at April 7, 2008 5:24 PM
Oh.... and one more thing....
FANTASTIC JOB WATSON!!!!!! The turn-around time from submitting a post to seeing it is AMAZING today!
Thank you Thank You Thank You! Your efforts are not without notice ... and are very much apprecitated!
Posted by: Keight at April 7, 2008 5:28 PM
Mostly great choices[I am not fond of any of the hardware, but wouldn't refuse the house because of them!]. Everyone needs a composter, but since I already have one, I voted for the water barrel. The other choices would all be great, but living in the South, metal is a better choice for the lawn furniture. Hope everyone gets at least one of their choices. Blessings to all.
Posted by: DebbieB at April 7, 2008 5:59 PM
Keight. I did wonder about the rain barrels as I remembered your posting on the regs for the estate. Maybe DIY has the OK, however, they have missed things before so who knows? I would rather see a cistern underground to hold much more water and a composter. Does anyone know if there is sewer lines or septic. If it’s a septic system a composter is a good idea as there can be no sink waste disposal unit. Helen states that there is no city garbage disposal so all garbage needs to be carried in your vehicle to the dump. Rotting food isn't nice in a car especially in summer, even when bagged. Compost heaps are not a good idea for a whole lot of reasons but a good composter that is easy to use is fantastic for keeping the garden healthy and recycling the organic waste. My opinion on solar lights (my opinion only) is that they are a waste of time and resources. They don't give enough light to do anything with. They break easily (we trashed ours over a period of time either in the ride-on mower or kids). The solar panels die slowly and miserably and they soon look an eyesore. If you want garden lights (remembering the covenants forbid unshielded lights) why not an LED low voltage system on a timer. They are efficient and would actually give enough light to see properly the path or borders.

Yep, thought the folks from TN might not take so well to them Adirondack chairs. I kinda like them a litle more, I can settle for with tradition.
If Rockers, then let's keep with tradition and have a fan on that porch where the rockers will set. Just please , some quality rockers ok? We have a 100 yr. old rocker passed down thru the family. If we were to win I would have brought it with us. Perhaps a local craft person who specializes in rockers would be best. I am not going to mention names of certain national stores where you might buy them , but let's not go there please. Just did a really quick Google search. Here one from TN. http://www.olesmoky.com/swings.htm
Perhaps DIY might see about getting Dolly to come visit the site ? That would definitely bring a lot of attention . She is a fun person from what I have seen. I mean...Well, you know what I mean ! She is a sweet spirited person.
Looks like a lot of fun this time around. Hope all is good with you all.
Oh, and we need to get Cabincraver some of that rhubarb pie ! Cabincraver, I would start out with the strawberry rhubarb pie first. As rhubarb is one of those things some either love or hate.

A little familar with the area, how far is it from nuc. power plant on route 68, and from shopping in Crossville? thanks
Posted by: Becky at April 7, 2008 7:56 PM
I too, Love all the new choices...I have to go with the natural rockers and the wood lawn furniture...Really don't care for any of the kitchen hardware though...Also went with the rain barrels to water all the hanging baskets w/ that I want to see (hint, hint)
Watson: I'ld still like to know about the grounding on metal roofs and possibly a backup generator!!!
Posted by: Susan (from OH) at April 7, 2008 8:08 PM
I have to tell you these choices were the hardest yet. I love both the rocking chairs and the adirondeck chairs. The patio sets were both beautiful. The pulls - how do you pick between those and I want all of the garden stuff. Only the water toys were easy cause I let my husband pick. Thanks for all the fun of getting to vote DIY.
Posted by: Judy at April 7, 2008 8:43 PM
Watson I love the new choices!!! And love that the blogs are being posted quicker. Can't believe that Keight's post of today at 5:28p is on already.
Clive I am with you on the lounger - I thought if you had a crowd this would be the best and I am concerned about some of the items and children get hurt. Cabanna would also be nice!
Sheila - I am with you on the composter. The solar lights are nice but you can pick these up at Home Depot and Lowe's for a reasonable price. The rain barrel is also a great idea but once again you can also get this at a reasonable price and if you watch "This Old House" then you know how to install one of this on your home - quite easy!
Lacey and Jenny I am with you on the Rocking Chairs! Just think they are so nice especially on a nice summer night!!! Brings back memories of sitting in a rocker on a warm summer night watching those fireflies (had to throw that in for BlognBob!)at my grandmother's. And they are so much easier to get in and out of compared to the Adirondack chairs. I have found the Adirondack chairs after sitting in them a while bother my back and are difficult to get out of (getting old) so I will take a rocker any day (or night) of the week. And it has to be natural I love the look of real wood and what would look better in this cabin.
It will be interesting what will win although I have found that whatever is ahead on the first day normally wins on the last day so we will have to wait and see.
Cabincraver2008 as always hope you are feeling better - Say "Hi" to favorite daughter Erika for me. Hope she and the family are well. Prayers are with you.
Take care all.
Posted by: Erin at April 7, 2008 8:47 PM
The Adirondack chairs look nice but the slanted seats are not good for one who has back problems, so I voted for the rockers which just seem to go with a cabin. I agree with Clive on the party lounger. It's also great for infants who aren't big enough for the water. Just put a little water in the bottom and watch them play while you relax. My grandkids already have water toys anyway so I'm voting for something for me! Solar lights can be bought cheaply, so because of trying to do more "green" living I voted for the composter. The rain barrel would be nice also so it's hard to decide on those. I like the bar pull for the cabinets because I think they will go nicely with the faucets and arts and crafts cabinets that won the previous voting. But I won't complain if everything I've chosen doesn't win because so much I do like has won. This will be a beautiful cabin regardless because the choices have been so great.
Posted by: Teresa at April 7, 2008 9:24 PM
Long time since I have had time to check out the blog cabin. Love the choices, I voted for solar lights, but will start voting for the composter. Seems like a log home in TN should have rocking chairs on the porch instead of adirondack chairs.
As for toys....my kids have plenty..I voted for the cabana lounger for mom and dad!!!

Hi Fellow Bloggers!
What a weekend. I'm a great-aunt for the first time! It's a boy! Thanks to e-mail (thanks again for the info about the virus) I was able to receive pictures of our new family member minutes after being born in Breckenridge, CO.
Back to our "fantasy cabin". Is there enough sun exposure on a daily basis to make the solar lights function to capacity? If not, I love the idea of the composter. As far as the chairs, I love the adriondack, but the old spine (l4-5 damage) makes it pretty rough to stand up, so I stuck with the rockers. Since I don't swim,(epilepsy) I wasn't too sure about the water toys. I agree that for some of them you would need a decent boat to pull you around. What are the regulations on the lake? Since my daughter is a competitive swimmer, I'll get her opinion on what swimmers enjoy the most. Speaking of boats, wouldn't it be nice to have a pontoon boat to relax in? I wonder if those are allowed on the lake. Lastly, I'll come out after June 14th and help put those rocks around the basement. Let me know when the bus leaves!
Have a great day!
Posted by: Luci at April 7, 2008 9:58 PM
Wow - very good point on storage of the water toys. Keight, you are a font of information on the deed restrictions. I am on the board of a homeowners assoc. here in Tampa, our restrictions cover 62 pages. It's not easy, and interpretation varies according to who sits on the Board. The biggest plus of where we bought our lot on Watts Bar is that the articles of inc. plus deed restrictions total 3 pages!! And it's well done. As an HOA, our biggest expense apart from insurance is legal fees!
Posted by: Sheila at April 7, 2008 11:34 PM
??? For Watson
Are we getting a chance to have a boat this year with the blog cabin? There are boat toys to vote on. Is that a hint for one?
Watson: Hey Carrie - indications are that there will not be a boat included in the prize package, but don't rule it completely out.
You know they have a nice big Bass Pro shop in Kodak, TN, which is right before you get to pigeon forge or seveirville, tn. Maybe diy can talk them into sponsoring one for the cabin. How sweet that would be for the fisherman in the winners family.
Posted by: Carrie Miracle at April 7, 2008 11:52 PM
Yippee, new choices. My choice for the lake toy, was the party island. My son would love to have the kid party trampoline thing though. lol. The only thing I didn't really care for were the Adirondack chairs. While I love the style, they are not great for those of us who are a little more round than others, and who have back problems. So I ask you all, please vote for the rocking chairs. Besides, rocking chairs are quintessentially southern. It's almost considered a crime not to have a rocking chair on your porch. lol.
Posted by: cindy at April 8, 2008 12:18 AM
Wow, I think I had a harder time with these than with the faucet finish or the type of floor I preferred! LOL
I went with the lounger as well. I figured that's a great family and friends activity right at the dock w/o a power boat.
I'm not sure I have a preference on the chairs as long as they are natural.
All the green feature are so great!! But I have a question on one of them Watson, if you would be so kind. Is it just a rain barrel or a more involved reclamation system?
This is so much fun to watch and be a part of. Thank you!!
Ahmed Hassan: Brenn I definitely agree that the wood should be natural, just to match the very natural look of everything else.
As far as the rain barrels are concerned, I voted against them and the composter and instead went for the solar lights. We'll definitely want some evening illumination and while I love using rain barrels I really dont forsee needing them for what's going to be coming in the landscape. The compost bin also. It would be great for a typical flat yard with plenty of sunshine but not this place. Just my opinion!
Posted by: Brenn at April 8, 2008 12:26 AM
i saw sooooooo many comments about a rain barrel but its behind in the votes by almost 200 already
so, whats the deal??
Posted by: ADAM bailey at April 8, 2008 12:59 AM
'Morning Fellow Bloggers,
Please give all of the natural wood furniture items serious consideration. Painted items need to be repainted from time to time - do you want that chore when you'd rather be enjoying the lake? Besides, wood just compliments the cabin perfectly.
I voted for the rain barrel, strictly because of the recent drought situations in the Southeast. Want to make sure that beautiful landscape Ahmed will come up with stays fresh and green. If, however, a lake pump for irirrigation would be permitted, the composter would be OK.
I'm with those who prefer the lazy-day approach to lake toys and voted for the multiple person float.
I can't wait to see the roof go on! Go DIY!
Posted by: Tingoat at April 8, 2008 7:10 AM
Hi everyone.......First time Blogger here.
I just wanted to say how BEAUTIFUL this home is going to be and that everyone working on this project are the BEST in the entire world. Someone is going to have a home that they NEVER could have even dreamed of. This is going to be down right AWSOME! What more could a person ask for, a beautiful home and an awsome view in a terrific state. I would say, "Heaven on Earth" or pretty darn close.
The lake toys are great, but I think that a boat slip or dock would be cool to. It would be easier access to the lake for fishing and playing with the water toys. After all, what's a lake home without a dock of your very own, that's just my opinion.
No matter what cool stuff gets voted on in this project, it's going to be spectacular.
Well enough of my rambling, I just want to thank DIY for giving us all a chance to help build The Blog Cabin of our dreams. Good Blogging to all, and please excuse the spelling errors.

ROCKING CHAIRS.
Solar lights just don't work very well. I HAD them and finally threw them away. How about just an old fashioned post light? Composters are great but how much use will it get at a vacation home? Rain barrels seem like a great idea. My question though is it a mosquito breeder? Can't wait to see the cabin in person. I am planning a trip south to visit family in the area.
Posted by: Jenny at April 8, 2008 8:15 AM
Yes, I am so excited! I look forward to the new voting features every 2 weeks and they all look like so much fun and yet so relaxing it was very hard to choose. Can anyone tell me what the rain barrel is for or what it does? I really don't want to sound stupid but I have never seen or heard of a rain barrel. Watson, do you know if there will be another Blog cabin after this one? and have you considered my suggestion about the log tree house? I just can't help thinking about how cool it would be and after watching the tree house episode on DIY last weekend I just know it would be great. I know there are to many restrictions for this cabin and most likely not enough time. I know not everyone has kids but between my husband and I we have 5 kids, one of them is grown and in the Army and the others range in age from 8 to 16 and we are always looking for a way to get them outside playing.
Posted by: Angela at April 8, 2008 8:23 AM
No solar lights please. I've seen them and they don't put out much light at all. The new choices are so fun!! Whoever wins this home will have a blast!!
Posted by: Kina at April 8, 2008 8:56 AM
We are fortunate enough to live on Watts Bar and with the weather was so beautiful yesterday we decided to take a ride on the water and see what all was going on at the house. The trees are turning green quickly now and the spring flowers are now in bloom. In the morning when the sun is coming up the water is like glass. It is a place that you really don’t like to leave as it is so peaceful.
It is really something to see - they were busy as bees working inside and out, and you can now see where some of the walls will go. There are a lot of windows and the view from the inside is really something. We took a lot of pictures – do you need to see the lake side view?
This is a great place to retire.

I'd just like to say that the adirondacks always look nice but believe me they are too hard for a lot of people to get out of. Including me. I loved the choices of the water toys. The composter is my choice; I really wish I had one now. What do you do with all that garbage? and leaves? Is there a septic system or what? Is there city water? One of the other messages made me start thinking about all kinds of things. Overall, this is just a great FUN thing to be involved in. Thanks!

hi gang,
hope all is well with all ! i just finished voting and what a heck of a time doing so. all were great choices, but the lake toys were AWSOME! WISH YOU COULD DO THEM ALL ! i spent a little more time on that one but i chose the cabana...never seen one like that befor...i choose it cause it was unique.the one with a place for a lot of people was cool too...and the gym set ....thumbs up on that one!
cant wait to see what its going to look like when its done....someone is going to be a very lucky person.

I just wrote a comment, for the first time, in this box. I was supposed to put the numbers, below, in a box, but I hit preview instead and went to a place where I could read my comment. I just wanted to enter the numbers, hoping that it wasn't too late to do so. This is beginning to sound very strange to me, but I'm going to enter the numbers anyway, and send this. I hope you don't put this message online, too!!!

I voted for the design pulls, the bar pulls are awful! I have them in my house right now and they catch on your clothes! They get soiled in the middle and are hard to clean, you don't want those bar pulls.
Posted by: DonnaDean at April 8, 2008 11:13 AM
TOO HARD OF CHOICES! (he he he) I did have a hard time voting. I voted yesterday then read some comments and changed my mind and voted differently today. Then I read more comments and I will probably change a few votes tomorrow.
I like the round cabinet pulls because they don't catch on clothing as much.
I will keep voting for the cabana because it has cover from the sun (I am allergic to sunscreen).
I voted for the Adirondack chairs but have changed to the rockers because I too have L4+5 back damage. I can't decide between painted or natural.
On the patio furniture I like the wood better BUT termites here in the south are terrible! We also have other critters that eat wood, just ask what is left of my Bradford pear tree out front(some type of beetle), or my porch railing (carpenter bees)! Then again, it gets very humid here also and metal does rust.
The choice between lights, composter and rain barrel is the worst for me. Apparently, the solar lights are all but useless. I have no plans to garden at vacation home and a composter would stink in the summer heat. Then there is the rain barrel. Can you say MOSQUITO nursery? Can we just throw this vote out and start with new choices? :-)
AHMED or WATSON or whoever manages the site:
Can we update the spell checker on here so it will know how to spell composter? Thanks!

I asked a physical therapist friend about the kitchen cabinet pulls as I had a suspicion that the bar design would be preferable for people with problems such as bad arthritis. She confirmed that this is the case. That people with some dexterity problems usually find bar type handles better. However the flip side is that 'T' shaped bars are about as bad a design as you can get for catching on clothing and ripping pants and sleeves no matter how smooth the ends are. Personal experience and that of friends on this point. Many workplaces ban them for this reason too. Also, they look like the sort of handles that should be twisted and are very easily broken off or loosened because of this. Kids especially have a tendency to want to twist them. If the round pulls are big enough the problems for people with dexterity problems can be overcome. If the bar type have to win please install those with fasteners at both ends, more handle shaped, with no extensions to catch clothing. There aren't many design features at this cabin to help people with physical handicaps but this is a simple thing to innclude that can help them.

Can anyone explain why a trampoline in a yard on land needs safety netting all around but one on water (deep or very shallow), and with about 3 ft drop into the water with nothing to stop someone from being right alongside, is considered safe? From experience this toy will need constant close supervision with kids playing on it.

More choices, I love it! I did not like any of the choices for the cabinet hardware however. YUCK! Hardware with any hint of intricacy should come with a warning "traps food particles, dust and dirt". For those of you who would like a composter, visit your neighborhood Sam's Club. I got mine for around $50. and they have them again this year. I agree that the solar lights are useless unless they are the newest leds. Rainbarrel it is for me [guess the greywater system is out]. This is the south, it has to be rockers, lol. Might find those others in the lake bottom if the locals spot them. I'm going with the teak outdoor furniture. Looks alot more inviting than the metal and resists rot from water alot better too. I live in an area surrounded by alot of small lakes. I wish I lived on a lake, but the cost of those homes is more than I could even consider. Until recently we did have a power boat and loved it. We took our kids tubing alot, so I can tell you kids will love those. However it does take a boat with substantial power to pull those toys. I see alot are voting for the lounger. Not me. I've seen every one of those toys in the lake and I'm going for the trio {slide, lounger, trampoline}. You can put a sunshade on them {available for purchase} and enjoy them with your kids/grandkids. You can lounge while the kids play or you can join in thier fun and they will remember it forever. A homeowner invited us on over as they were bbqing and we were fishing at the time. I think they could see the kids were bored {rule was they had to let us fish for a half hour and then we'd tube for the rest of the day} and that was an amazing water toy. Come to think of it, you could stand on the lounge part of it and fish off of it since its supported on both sides. People with epilepsy can swim, just not by themselves. However they cannot or I should say, should not, drive a boat or any motorized vechicle. This cabin is really coming along and looking just as gorgeous as I knew it would. Thanks Watson and Crew for keeping us informed!

Hi bloggers:
Another round of voting and I love almost all of them.
I chose the cabana since it has shade and will protect my friends from the sun.
I chose the rain barrel to catch the rain to water some plants. Only choice here I don't like is the solar loghting.
I chose the wood deck longers dont want to rock myself to sleep. I might miss something.
I chose the wood patio furniture, the other one looks out of place for a patio.
as far as the cabinet hardware I really do not like any of them so I chose the bar pulls since it doesn't look to fancy. All of them would be hard to clean.
I have a dumb question I notice people saying that if the cabin has a septic tank that you can not have a garbage disposal may I ask why thought i read on some of them that they are safe for septic tanks. I found this by searching correct me if this is wrong.
... A garbage disposal will not harm your septic system! In fact, it can be an advantage to helping your septic ... is that garbage disposals work just fine ...

This years house is Great!!!!!!!!!
My Husband and I have dreams of building a log cabin home someday and the floor plan of this home is just what we had in mind. The site is perfect with the water behind the house and all the features the voters have picked are going to look beautiful! Who ever wins this home is going to love it. I am hoping it will be me!!!!!!!!!!!
That truely would be a dream come true!

This may seem like an odd question:
Are there any bear problems in this area? If so, would a composter be considered an "attractant". Have been considering one...we live in grizzly and black bear country and plan to find this out prior to purchasing one. Does anyone know?
Posted by: Cathy P. at April 8, 2008 12:47 PM
I like the Green Features....but, while watching the Cabin Cam...I was thinking the front porch looks a bit small and out of step with the rest of the cabin. Why not extend it on both sides so that items could be placed on the porch/veranda/front deck right under the windows...such as window boxes for cut flowers or herbs for the kitchen, and then have easy access without opening the windows or screen...AND create a visual flow when inside looking out? AND this would make up for the side porch being shorter than in the original plans.

No adirondack chairs please! Rockers are better. Honestly I would rater have a porch swing. :o)
Posted by: racytay at April 8, 2008 1:12 PM
Mizie, I am with you on the composter. I think its a good choice. We gardeners need to forfeit the trip to the dump with perishables. A composter would really save us money on gas too (as news now are estimating that gas will be up to $4.00 a gallon by summer) Also with all the leaves.....Yep, the composter is the one to go with. Cabincraver and Erika, our continued prayers. Wishing you much sunshine your way.
:-) I don't care for the kitchen hardware, looks a bit tacky. However, I will not complain, and will be glad to win this cabin and be forever thankful for such a blessing. Sally, thanks for your peaceful picture that you gave us in your description of the cabin. I can just about picture that glassy water. Would be great to see those photos of yours. Happy Blogging!

Watson, My husband and I are crossing our fishing poles and rubbing our lucky baits for the hopes that a new boat will be included for the winners. We all still have some hopes for one, RIGHT! please sponsors come forward!!!!!! Since you confirmed it's not ruled out yet. We like the Tahoe ski and fish boats. (Hint) That's the one we want for family fun. The ski n fish boat is best for fishing and waterplay. And hubby saw one of the new bigger bass trackers bass boats a friend has and said it was pretty sweet too!
I think it would be worth a try for diy to go & talk to the Bass pro store in Kodak or even in Nashville. I'm so sure they would just love to get some free television and web advertisements in exchange for sponsoring a boat and maybe some fishing gear, life jackets and etc. This would be such an awesome addition to this wonderful give away. Our family loves going to the bass pros even if we don't intend on buying anything. Even though we always seem to find something interesting. The bass pro stores are fun for families to just go look at. With the fish tanks or animal mount displays. It's fun for the whole family. I like it decked out at Christmas time. Not everyone owns a boat. And if the new winner already owns one or needs a new one. (hint) Well, they could sell the old one to help pay the taxes for the new one. wink wink
I can't wait to see what diy & sponsors have in store for the viewers. (I'm already having a ball just decorating the house.) FUNNNNN!!!!!!
A. Muse : thanks again for the warning, you didn't scare me over the virus thing. But hey you know what they say. If you see a threat, then shout a warning for your blind friends.
How do you make the sun tea? I remember that as a child but had forgotten about it until you mentioned it.

Love all the choices. This is so much fun watching everything take shape. What a great retirement home. (I'm thinking about retirement more and more.) This loghome seems to have something for everyone. I love reading everyones thoughts because they bring up things that I never thought of. I'm voting for natural rockers too. I've changed my mind on the lake toy and going with the lounger. Makes more sense after reading all of the comments. The cabin cam is great this year. I love it. Keep up the good work.

whats With water Toys? to me it's waste of money to have them around all time. You will have pull them off the lake every day and store the some place.. Plus what happened to just swiming with out the junk like water toys. I like the rain barrels. That way you can save the water for watering all the plants. also it will help with the control of keeping water away from the cabin.
Good the see that someone is working now.
Posted by: Tracy G. Smith at April 8, 2008 1:37 PM
Still pushing for a good quality composter. One that can be turned easily such as the drum style. No smell, rapid conversion of organic waste into excellent garden compost and no place for snakes to raise their young.

Again Kudos....you have done a great job selecting
all the choices for us to pick from!! We can't
believe how nicely its coming all together and in
such a short time! How enjoying it will be sitting
on that beautiful deck looking out at the water,
very relaxing to anyone! Thanks again for putting
in all your time, sweat and imagination..perfect!

Forgive me guys if this is a repeat blog. My computer is having issues with the connections coming on and off. I hit post and it lost connection last try. Not sure if blog come through or not.
Sally, Yes, I would love to see or hear a description I can see the bright waters now. Have they started on all of the porches, decks & patios at the back. I bet it's so pretty from the lakeview. I wish I could see your pictures. I did see the veiw from the road in front of the house. It is a gorgeous place & view surrounding the house. Forget the retirement it's my kind of everyday town. Laid back and small, with big towns nearby. Whoever wins this house is just gonna be so lucky & blessed! I think it's time for a family fishing trip to Watts bar. So I can see the progress from the back of the home and have some family fun to. A 2 for 1 deal. My husband says there's pretty good fishing there! He's wanting to go I can tell!
Cathy P. I think you should call and ask your local wildlife manager or park ranger about the composter or possible bear bait ordeal. They would know if it is a safe idea for you to use one or not in your area.
As for the cabin it is close (1 1/2 hours) to the Smokies (there are bear there) they have bear proof trash cans at all of the tn parks we've been to. It is a mountainous lake area so there is the possibility of bear being in the area.
Maybe Helen miko or Sally would know if there are bear there since they live in the area!
Clive I agree the water park has the potential to be a danger, for injuries, as is all water activities/toys, if kids or some adults (drinkers), are not supervised and made to wear life jackets and if the water level is not paid attention to. Someone could get hurt! I like the water park toy, though, I thought it would be great for older teens and adults. I liked the idea of being able to go sit on it like a dock as well. When kids are not playing on it. Fishing off of it is a possibility but however better watch those hooks guys. Could cause a hole or air leak! We adults could fish the banks while supervising the kids all the activity could scurry a few fish our way. When the fish are heading for cover!
Posted by: Carrie Miracle at April 8, 2008 3:39 PM
I would still love to see the front porch extended to meet the masterbath and mudroom jut outs. I love bigger front porches. I do understand that the lakeside of the home is meant to be used mostly but sometimes one side of the house might be sunnier than the other and you may want to head for the cooler shadier side. Or the side where the rain isn't blowing in. You guys know what I mean. Anyway I love the house. If I won I wouldn't care if anything I voted for was in it or not. I would just be thankful to have a home given to me! And be pretty much debt free on it!
Posted by: Carrie Miracle at April 8, 2008 3:49 PM
Clive, you've changed my mind about the toy with the trampoline. Sure wouldn't want any kids hurt and turning a dream into a nightmare! And all the complaints about difficulties getting out of them have made me decide to switch to Rockers. Sure hope they are nicer like the ones in BlogginBob's link, though. The ones in the picture don't look as nice as the adirondacks.
Problems with the solar lights would be directly proportional to the quality of the units.
Now where did I pack my suntan oil?
Posted by: Connie at April 8, 2008 4:30 PM
Hi Carrie Miracle. The idea of fishing off the ‘water park’ toy and being careless with the hook is amusing. I suppose going down with the boat is the captains duty but what about a fisherperson? My first instinct is save the tackle!
My biggest concern, having seen this happen in a well supervised group of kids ages 10-13, is someone bouncing off the trampoline and on to someone in the water by accident. A 100lb person coming down from about 10 ft in the air hits the person below with a force close to 1000lbs. In our case the child on the receiving end had 4 cracked ribs and a serious concussion. The jumper had a broken wrist. They are great fun but I wonder at the wisdom of the design.
I'm guessing that on the towing toys everyone has to wear a life jacket by law. There are probably laws concerning the age at which a life jacket need not be worn while on an enclosed watercraft. I wonder whether there are any laws (as opposed to common sense) covering use of other water toys such as the 'water park' toy?
Greetings CabinCraver and Erika. I hope all is well with you and your strength is returning.

So the composter will help by eliminating hauling smelly trash to the dump in the car...(:
I think I keep reading that we can change our
votes or vote everyday....>?

Hi Watson,
I finally see a chimmey in the back of the cabin!!! Way to go - too bad you can't set up another cam in the back of the cabin so we can see that side. Unfortunately I cannot get into the videos - Chris & Simon or Ahmed. Webmaster did not help me either so guess I won't be seeing any of these so a cam in the back would be great - just a hint.
For those voting on the trampoline - injuries will happen and do you really want to be responsible for that especially a neck injury that results in a broken back in a child??? It does happen. Think again before you vote for this item. Not a good idea as Clive stated you will be spending all your time watching kids.
Water barrel or composter either would be great but like Clive solar lights are not worth it and if you want them that bad just go out and buy not expensive at all.
Take care all and have a wonderful "Spring" day!

I agree Connie , the site I pulled up didn't have the best designs for rockers. I was rather hesitant to include the site for the Gentleman who makes them in WY. As they are truly keepsake rockers, not production line. So, they are pricey as they are hand made and each different.http://www.garyweeks.com/rocking_chairs.htm I am not sure if he might consider advertising in an exchange as he was really back logged last I remember. I just pulled the first local site off the web before. I also know of a really good artisan in stained glass, but then again, out of the area. Denver. I know they like to use local crafts persons in most productions like this.
Carrie Miracle, I agree wholeheartedly with the boat . Thank You for your intuition with a reputable source to petition for a donation. Once Again, your shining brilliance. And a ski and fish boat idea too. Perfect !
When it comes time for furniture , I hope that some genuine antiques might be strongly considered. As often the cost is not that much different than buying new. If it is 70 to 100 years or older and still looks nice, then it is likely built well enough to last another hundred years and maintain its value. We have a few antiques like this handed down to us.
Thank You Watson for the rapid updates and your wonderful work on this site. You really don't get paid enough whatever your salary.

so glad i read the blogs because i changed how i voted. i voted for the cabana cause of all the choices it looked like the one that might get used the most . but still even with an air compressor how long would it take to blow this thing up?
i will now vote on rocker [dang im getting old]
i liked the trad round pull but if i won this would prob change out all to bin pulls just a neater look and they dont get caught on your clothing.
i have a septic and we have a garb disposal and this is actually good for your septic it creates good bacteria that brakes down the stuff.
liked the metal furniture less upkeep did like the look of the wood tho.
green feature composter- well bet they got coons down there. i have one and it spins much easier to turn. rain barrel i also had skeeter concerns altho really liked the look of it
so voted on the solar lites but i would prob put them in the garden.
cabincraver and erika - praying for you.
keight not so scared as just dont understand the meaness

Okay, guys!! I don't get it! What's with the adirondack chairs in the south thing? Why do neighbors dislike them in the south??? I have never lived in the southeast, so I have no clue as to what so many bloggers are referring to. I really love them. Please explain....
Posted by: Jan in AZ at April 8, 2008 9:16 PM
I sould love to have a jet ski as a lake toy selection. Did I see a boat dock in the drawings somewhere...hmmm. Cabin looks great, keep up the good work! It will be a wonderful place to live for someone who loves the water...oh wait, that would be me & my family! Thanks for letting us bloggers be part of the build.
Posted by: Jason at April 8, 2008 10:21 PM
So many good points to consider, let's trade in the "toys" for a downpayment on a boat---but then you have to have a boatlift dock (not cheap). Not awfully expensive, but a cost to consider. Will the "prize" include TVA approved dock structure, even if not built? It takes ages to get that permit if not established.
One thing about the geographical area, very early sunsets year round...Walden Ridge blocks the western view. It is beautiful, but the sun sets early.

Clive (and Lynne and Adam and Sheila).... Seems the question as to whether a rain barrel would be permitted by the A.C.C. is moot since it is so far behind in votes. Sorry to see the composter is not fairing any better either. I agree that the composter would be a great addition to the place and, perhaps the Cabin Winner will invest in one that is easy to operate and holds a fair amount to make the effort worthwhile.
Actually I was surprised to see the solar lights as the frontrunner. The ones on the market seem to be in need of some more tweaking before they will be a good investment.(personal experience) I agree Clive, LEDs would be such a better choice.
Couple of other quick notes: CONGRATULATIONS to Luci on becoming a Great Aunt for the first time! I know you have seen pictures ... will you be visiting him, too, in the near future?
Colleen ... So sorry to hear your little dog was attacked.... is recovery complete?
Jan in AZ ... WoW ... 3 good sized dogs ... do you think it is easier with more than one ... I mean to they play together and entertain each other or just get into mischief. And, I agree with Colleen ... there is always the chance that the A.C.C. may change the no dog runs rule. Maybe just before the Sweepstakes voting begins (I think I read that will be sometime in August), the things that are permitted in the Community can be clarified by Watson or DIY for all those with questions. That would be helpful.
And one final thought ... maybe, instead of Lake Toys, the money could be spent (or a sponsor could be found) for a DumbWaiter for the Cabin. Now that would be a real voting choice winner!
Posted by: Keight at April 9, 2008 12:08 AM
hi there blogging buddies,
i am VERY surprized that a lot more voting hasnt been going on....i kinda expected the numbers to be a lot higher...probably due to the choices this time...they are great ones...took me a while too to get through them.
in response to clive on the water trampoline...we should only hope that befor you let kids play on it that they know how to swim !...i live in maine and when we go swimming ,we swim out to a landing to dive or jump off of it....this would be the same idea only the trampoline is soft.
my kids are all water rats now but it was a lot of fun teaching them how to swim at the tender age of 2 months!
and there are 7 of them and all 11 grandbabies love the water to and are very respectful of it.
hey diy keep up with these great things cause in never even seen some of those toys for the water....lol
love your style
till the next blog

All the roads at the Lakefront Estates are paved and curbed and lighted with water and sewer. Underground utilities include telephone, electric, and cable.
The above info. is posted as written at the Lakefront Estates Website.
It is a bit unclear if the sewer reference is for storm water drainage only, or for actual sewer hook-up for the home sites, too. But, at least the questions about telephone, electric and cable(DIY!) are answered.
No mention about natural gas availability to the homesites either. I have inquired and will pass on any information that I receive about the two items in question above.

The lucky person that wins will have all of my favorites except that composter, which would attract bears but, I really think it necessary. This place is going to be a little mansion. WHAT is the virus talk about? That lake looks like it's full of fish, trout season opens this weekend. Took vaction time, love the sport.Keep on voting!! Congrat to the new grammy, give that little one a kiss!Night!!!!

Hi Carrie!
I have made Sun Tea in the past, and the “recipe” I used is included below. The Sunshine Tea I mentioned in the post to Helen is made with Instant Tea, Tang, Spices, and sugar. It can be served hot or cold. My version of SunShine Tea is also included in this post, along with a recipe for a sugar free version for those who must watch their intact of sugar, carbs, calories, etc.
In the lazy, hazy days of summer, when it's too hot and too much work to boil a kettle, SunTea is a great way to make tea. You put teabags of your choice in a large clean jar and fill with water according to the number of servings you are making. Screw on the cap, Give the jar a shake. Place the jar in a sunny spot. Wait a few hours, then shake it a bit more. You will know it is done when the color reaches the shade of a normal brewed cup of tea: dark for black teas, lighter for green. After the tea has steeped, it can be placed in the refrigerator to chill, but that may cause it to become cloudy. Ice, lemon, and sweetener by the glass or added to the finished brew is usually the better option. You could pour some of the Sun Tea into an ice cube tray, and when the cubes are ready, use them to chill the tea. SOME TIPS AND ADVICE: 1. Use a larger jar than needed for the water. The extra space allows room for shaking up the mixture and to get a more even distribution of ingredients. 2. Sun Tea tastes best within three days of preparation. 3. Sun Tea steeps at an ideal temperature for bacterial growth. If you see ropy-looking strands in your tea, or any other unusual –looking particles, chances are your tea has become a bacterial hotbed. THROW IT OUT and CLEAN the CONTAINER thoroughly before your next attempt.
If you are looking a something with a little orange flavor boost, SunShine Tea Mix may be perfect! It is usually served Hot, but is very refreshing over ice, too.
1 (18 oz.) jar Tang instant breakfast drink
1 1/4 c. sugar
3/4 c. instant tea
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
Dash of salt
Boiling water
Combine Tang, sugar, instant tea, spices, and salt. Makes 4 cups dry mix or enough for 12 quarts of tea.
For 1 serving, place 1 well rounded teaspoonful of mix in cup: fill with boiling water and stir until dissolved. To make 1 quart (6 servings) dissolve 1/3 cup of mix in 1 quart boiling water. Serve with a lemon wedge if desired.
NOTE: Use more or less mix if desired. The dry mix may be prepared in advance and stored in a tightly covered container.
Sugar –Free Sunshine Tea
1 c. lemon-flavored instant tea, sweetened with NutraSweet
1 tbsp. Tang, sweetened with NutraSweet
1 tbsp. apple pie spice
1 (1 1/2 oz.) pkg. lemonade drink mix, sweetened with NutraSweet
Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Store mixture in airtight container. For each serving, place 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 teaspoons mix in cup. Add 3/4 cup hot water. Stir well. Makes 48 servings. (3 calories per serving)
So, now you have three different ways to quench your thirst. But, I’ve got one more drink idea to share … Many people love Bubble Tea, but, for others, it is in the same category as BlognBobs’ Infamous Goeduck !
Bubble tea is basically like a smoothie or juice with boba (tapioca pearls) or jellies (lychee) in it. The essence of a perfect boba drink, the Boba (aka tapioca pearls or black pearls) is made from the starch of the cassava root. People often confuse the Boba as a fruit. This is because when cooked properly (about 45-60 minutes), they become sweet, jelly-like, chewy balls. All the needed ingredients can be purchased on the internet, and several shops have begun to spring up selling the ready made drink. You could check for a listing for a store near you if you are feeling adventurous!
Anyone out there ever hear of or gulp their fill of BUBBLE TEA?!?!?
(Note to Heading South: Don't know what is in Clive's Red Drink that you mentioned, but it sounds like it may also fit in this acquired taste category!)

Hi Everyone, I left a post earlier today on the other blog but it never posted so I figured I'd try here since it's the newest one.
Carrie Miracle so glad you enjoyed the monkey story, if you & your family get to Florida we'll be glad to take you to see them and the gators. Thanks for the good health wishes, I'm the one in the wheelchair (Misty).
For Clive, Bloggin Bob, A.Muse, Heading South & everyone else - keep the blogs coming you make my day reading all the blogs and I'm sure you entertain many others too plus the facts are great and the stories fun.
Keight & Helen - your help is so informative to all of us and greatly appreciated, you'll make great neighbors and, if we win, we'll have a rocking chair ready for when you visit (Helen, please bring your yummy sounding brownies).
Cabincraver & Erika - glad your out of the hospitl & feeling better. As another one who has spent too much time there I know it's no fun. Keep improving, each day is a step forward and I know we're so lucky to have such great family & friends helping us.
River Rock would be the perfect stone for the bottom of the cabin, fireplace, landscaping, etc., so natural looking and common in log cabins.
We already bought rocking chairs (wishful thinking one day for a dream cabin to use them on the porch) but since we only bought 2 I'll change my vote for more as I'm sure there will be lots of visitors whoever wins. I'm hoping a true log home lover wins and lives in it full-time and passes it on for generations to enjoy. We'd love to share it with our family & friends and I can just picture the memories our Grandchildren would have. The lake toys will be so much fun for families and water safety should be practiced no matter which one wins.
I'm still hoping the cabin is usuable for those of us in wheelchairs but it worry's me with such a high & deep kitchen sink we can't reach and the fridge/freezer is too hard to open the bottom & the top too high but I'm not giving up that the show will make sure it's usable by whoever wins.
On other blogs people were worried about Lymes Disease, over 16 years ago I was misdiagnosed and spent a year between 2 hospitals when we lived in Jersey. Finally an Infectious Disease Doctor realized I was bitten by deer tick but it was too late for me, it had already infected my heart & joints. We lost our first ranch due to medical bills but doing good now but my health was ruined. President Bush was treated for it last year and is healthy now but it's all about being treated correctly in the beginning stages. I'll write more if anyone has more questions.
The horse stables info was great & appreciated as we still have our horses even though we retired them (we showed Western) when I wound up in the chair due to my health but, like all our pets, they'll stay with us for life.
If we win, be sure to stop by for some sweet tea (sun tea is easy, just add your favorite teabags (about 8) to a gallon jug of water (hang the bag tags outside the jar when you put the lid on so they are easier to remove) and put by a sliding glass door or window with lots of sun all day then the next day remove the tea bags, add sugar & lemon to taste, serve over ice and chill in the fridge, enjoy. The amount of tea bags can vary depending on the strength you like your tea so adjust to taste over time.
Good health & good luck to all !!

Hi again.....
Weather was great yesterday with the river being really flat and good for boating, so we went out on Watts Bar for a ride and over to see what all was happening at the house. They were putting the roof on the covered deck. This is really something to see and it looks Great!
Someone asked how far it is to Crossville - 30 miles trough the mountains with a new view at every turn. Their is a valley between here and their and it is beautiful no matter what the season of the year. The log house is located about half way between Chattanooga and Knoxville. We are off to Chattanooga today and a trip up "Look Out Mountain".
Retirment is Great in Tennessee.

All of these choices are great to choose from a little hard but very nice. In response to some of the other blogs I think it would be great if you could get Dolly Parton to come check out the cabin she was born in the mountains in a shack and her story line is amazing. To diy if you ever have the time you should go to Dollywood and check out her replica cabin it is tiny. Also in response to the water toys some are for a boat and some are not since I don't have a boat and cannot afford one I will be voting for the stationary types of toys. I think asking for a boat may be a little much but if we look at all the other great offers we have been given it may not be. I am sure some of the things are corporate donations for tax purposes. The rockers are a tradition for the mountains and the fan on the porch somewhat is a tradition as well either way I have no preference.
When I sit I sit. If you do get the rockers when the voting is done there are some wonderful places that make the log furniture in rockers and other stuff. These would hold up for a very long time and I think would be a nice touch as well, check it out. Thanks again for everything we get to vote on DIY you are great. Wil
Ahmed Hassan: Wil, I too would love it if we could get someone to donate a boat to go with this beautiful lakeside log home. Of course you know that then we'll need a dock, which is permitted for our lot. Then of course it will be the complicated decisions like what kind of boat, what size, in board or out board, ski boat, fishing or bass boat, how about access down to boat dock, will the boat come with a trailer for towing, how about a truck to go with the boat , how about a dog to be a co-pilot, you see the kinds of stuff that snowballs into everything that decided on...

The voting is so much fun. I posted last time once, but it never went through, we will see if this one makes it!
Everyone has their opinions and I think that is great, so here is mine!
I am voting for the trampoline water park activity because I do have three kids who would enjoy this. And I know there is a risk of getting hurt, but kids need to be kids and play and learn how to be safe at the same time. Plus, it looks fun for adults too. And if you can't use something the smart way, then you should stay off of it!
I myself have had good luck with solar lights. And in fact just bought some more for our yard. Now, we have a lot of sun that hits our house though, so maybe this won't be the case because there are a lot of trees on the cabin lot, but I do not know where the sun hits. I just know that lights along a pathway and home make a home very inviting. The composter, to me just seems like a lot of work and bad smells. And the rain barrel is a good idea, but honestly, I am not a gardener and wouldn't use the excess water from it. Thus making these two items a waste of money for me or probably anyone who thinks like me.
I myself like the rockers, I don't find the adirondack chairs comfortable, and I think they should be natural, because I do not want to have to paint them again! I also love sitting on a rocker watching the sun go down. It is so peaceful.
I like the Ash lawn furniture also because it just looks more natural and comfy.
The kitchen pulls, that one I am torn on. I have been voting for the bar pulls. Round ones seem to get boring for me. The bar pulls seem to add a little character. But, the catching on my clothes is one reason I do not like them. Maybe they can find some unique bar pulls that curve inward toward the cabinet.
I am jealous of the poster who told us about the trees starting to bloom and the spring weather hitting there! I am in SD and we have yet another snow storm coming our way in the next two days!! I am crossing my fingers it is mostly rain! Is winter ever going to end??
Posted by: Cari at April 9, 2008 10:02 AM
It's good to see that both choices of patio furniture are 'green' options. The Ash Lawn is made from eucalyptus and is renewable and resistant to termites etc. The South Haven is aluminum with steel reinforcing so minimal corrosion and a long life. Some of the aluminum may be from recycled material also. So choice is down to personal favorites with no 'guilt' or otherwise over it's eco-friendliness.

Seeing as how the votes are going, it seems the solar lights are ahead, but as Cathy P. mentioned, the composte might draw critters, like that crazy raccoon (hee hee). But seriously, I'd much rather have the lights.
I love a good made rocking chair, so I'm going to keep voting for the natural ones.
Clive, I agree with the drawer pulls. I don't have arthritis yet, but very small hands for an adult. So, I can only imagine if I have problems, what people with joint issues must go through. I will continue to vote for the bar pulls.
BlognBob, love the Dolly idea! I can picture her now sitting on the porch giggling her giggle and sipping lemonade! The one thing I'd request would be a singing of "Coat of Many Colors".
Safe water toys gang! Trampolines are a heart stopper no matter on land or water, and as mentioned not only with kids, but overindulged adults too.
CabinCraver2008 and family, continued prayers for health and strength!

The water trampoline is alot safer than a land one. It needs no netting because the only thing you hit if you go off the side is water. All of the water toys that aren't towed are either anchored or weighted to keep them in place. They are not taken out of the water until the end of the season. They are in deep enough water that should you go over the side, you will not hit bottom hard enough to hurt. They are not meant to dive off [although I havn't seen a kid resist yet]. The rule is, if a person [no matter how big or small] cannot swim well enough to be left alone, they MUST wear a vest. It's that simple and safety is all important. It would be sweet to have a boat donated this year. I'd still vote for the same water toy though. I agree with Carrie, a fish and ski boat is ideal. Put a 225 Johnson on the back of it and you can pull the toys easily. :) A nice trolling motor w/a built in fishfinder and your all set. Family water fun at its finest!

Another thought was a "small" but well landscaped about patch for a private little owners garden area. Something quaint and presentable. with some nice soil and the sort already in place. Not sure if acceptable with the HOA ? but if landscaped in , it might be.
The composter seems to be a sealed unit. A compost pile would work nicely next to the aforementioned garden. But then, there are nearly always raccoons along lakes. Not sure about the bear around there? But I think as long as you kept most things under the dirt you might be ok.
And perhaps the rain barrel near by.
You know what would be really nice is a little fish and tackle room somewhere in that basement. Wouldn't have to be big or fancy. Some places to hand the rods. and some shelves. Maybe a small place for a cooler to keep night crawlers so Momma won't puke when she finds them in the wine cooler....LOL. Oh...just kidding!
Erin, I will do as I was told by my Pop. Never argue with a woman. If you say there are fireflies in WA. Then so be it.(But he never said I couldn't tease and joke a bit) I will not ask where your cousins live, but if you can ask them to where please they have seen these elusive fireflies in WA. , I would love to pass this along to my family. I have already taught my son this principle and he has it well memorized and can recite it. If Momma isn't happy , then nobody is happy ! Best information I can give to any guy person I know. I believe it applies beyond the boudaries of marriage as well.
But ,I still haven't seen them !

Hi all. We have always had rainbarrels at the end of our downspouts. We would put a small bullhead (fish) in the barrel to keep down the mosquito larvae. I love the wood furniture but I live where there aren't any termites. I assume they will use treated wood but...if you bring the wood furniture into the garage or storage area, would termites spread into that space?
I have not seen an answer about restrictions on the lake. Can the towables be used all over the lake (which would not please swimmers or fisherpeople)? Can the lake toys be left out on the lake overnight or would that be against regs and pleasing to thieves? Thanks. LLL

Oh my! Did you see the roofs on those side porches? GORGEOUS!!!!! o how would I love to lazy the day away on them. Just a swinging or a rocking it away! Drinking "sun tea" and eating brownies! Yum! Counting the boats passing by... or the geese flying by.... Oh yes now I got it just reading a great book.

I was wondering if anyone has found if this is trex decking or natural wood? The view is just not big enough to tell? But it appears to be some decking material in the very foreground of yesterdays cabin cam pics.
Are you permitted to tell us Watson?
Okay, I had to break down and research this a little on the web.
Firefly facts:
http://www.byteland.org/naturalist/firefly_faq.html#oregon
http://hymfiles.biosci.ohio-state.edu/projects/FFiles/frfact.html
On this second reference please look to the column to the right for specifics.
Yes Erin, You are right ! There are fireflies in WA. "But" there are reasons why I have not seen them flying around if you read thru these.

Solar lights? Why? They Will Not Put Out that Much Light. Becaues Of All The Trees & Why Do You Need They At A Cabin? It's Place To Get Away From Things. Like Lights Phones Tvs ect...
Just Keep It Simple & Quite. Composter Would Be Nice BUT!!! It's Bear Bait!!! I Know This Very Well. I live In Califoria And Have Seen This Happen A Lot Out Here....

Well, Helen Miko! you have made it to the big screen...Congrats! are in order. Perhaps DIY can have you as a regular on the show. Perhaps you can be our spokeperson and get DIY to make provisions for the $200,000 in taxes that the lucky winner will have to give to our beloved :-( IRS. Anything new that we should know? Fill us in .....we are waiting Helen.... :-)

Please don't vote for the bar pulls, I have them and they present a problem, your clothes catch on them, especially when wearing layers. I voted for the round design pulls but whichever you vote for, just remember I told you about those bar pulls and it seems that most are voting for those awful pulls. I also voted for the Cabana and trying to decide between the compost(I love to Garden and cook) and the solar lights, although, I have not had much luck with them in the past. Good Luck to all.

Question for Carrie or Helen or anyone else who has visited the Blog Cabin Home Site:
Did you have time to tour the two houses that are for sale in the development? If so, how do you think they compare in size and features to the Blog cabin?
Are there any other lots sold or houses being constructed besides the three we all know about?
Thanks!
Also.... my hubby wonders what kind of bait those fishermen were using, Carrie ... and did they appear to have caught anything while fishing ... how big were the fish? He was reading that there are several Tournaments scheduled to be held at Watts Barr Lake over the next few months, so he thinks the fishing must be pretty good for Bass, at least. Helen ... what gets caught most from the shoreline where you live? And how big are the fish that are landed by the locals? OK...Husband just mentioned I should say Thanks in Advance for any information you can supply....so..... THANKS in ADVANCE of your informative (as always) posts!

Since the front eve for the main entrance is not yet built, Might I suggest for open forum something rather grand.
Perhaps larger logs or timbers , supported by cement blocks covered with stone. and a huge Log or Beam to cap the said pillars.
I have seen it on some log style homes in our area and it is really dramatic.

Hi A. Muse. No, my 'red drink' would definitely not fit in anywhere in this blog. In fact I doubt it will fit in anywhere in the USA or even N. America. It's definitely a regional specialty and definitely not this region. Personally, it made me nearly vomit. Nuf said! Give me a good pint of English ale served at room temperature (or cooler in hot climes) any day.

Hi Muse! Regarding Clive's Red Drink.....well it is definitely belonging to the acquired taste category to say the least.
Clive, will you please describe your drink? :-)
I am just lost for words on it. :-)
Misty, sorry to hear about the lost of your ranch. I really like your spirit...you still have your horses. You are right that they stay life. I understand being hositalized, I too years ago was bitten by a tick, had massive dosages of intravenous antibotics, lots of pain and alot of residuals to live with for the rest of your life. Are you still able to go to the fence and touch them? Keep looking up.... Thanks for your input on the blog. We need your input :-)

Ok-- I'll try to answer everybody's questions here.
Muse-- as soon as Katie gets home from school today, we'll go over and give the cup of sugar to them for Watson. LOL
Rob- this place truly is Heaven on Earth -- whether you are working or retired. I sit on my deck each day and feel the calmness come over me just looking at the lake. I have a pair of Heron that show up each night about 5 or 6 and get their evening meal in the fish at my end of the lake.
Jenny- Let me know when you guys are coming south and maybe we can meet for lunch or something.
Kabby-- we get rid of the garbage here by taking to the dump ourselves. That's why almost every family eventually ends up with a pick-up. LOL As for the leaves --we burn them here, you just go to town and get the ok, and then you can burn them. I'm not so sure how that will work across the street though -- they have special rules.
Luci-- yes, we can have pontoon boats here. As a matter of fact, Matt and I are looking for a used one right now. We bought the house last year, and, since we own 2 acres, we also bought a ride-on lawn mower. So, the boat had to wait until this year. Even though we already had a covered dock when we bought the house. LOL
Kathy-- I've never seen any bear here, but we do have coyotes. I heard a rumor that they released some black bear and coyotes about 7 miles from here because the deer are overrun there. But, at this point, that is only a rumor.
Tracy -- water toys are pretty common around here -- especially the tubes that you pull behind your boat, and water skis too.
Angela-- my daughter is outside all of the time. (And she's SO hoping some people with kids will move in across the street as there's not too many her age here. She's 11.) She has already been outside fishing off of our dock the other day, and trying to catch the minnows in the a water, etc... the kids just love it around here. It's also a great place for them to ride bikes, as almost everyone that comes on the street either lives here, or is visiting someone who lives here, as there is no outlet once you come this far down the street.
Becky-- once you pass over the dam/power plant, we are about a 15 minute drive down 68. But, it is closer as the bird flies. (About 5 miles I believe.)
As for going into Crossville shopping -- it's about a 45 minute drive over the mountain from here. We are on Eastern time here, but Crossville is central time. That's how close we are to the time zone change. LOL We are also about a 20 minute drive to Dayton, 1/2 hour to Rockwood, and about an hour to either Knoxville or Chattanooga.
I hope this helps all of you!

Hi Muse-- just a little update--
When Katie came home from school, we brought the cup of sugar over for Watson. He wasn't there, but they said they'd get it to him. They did have a kind of strange look on their face when I 1st handed them the ziplock bag with the sugar in it. LOLOL So, now Watson has his 'sugar on top'.

OK I found the TVA laws regarding water craft and lifejackets etc. on Watts Bar lake. http://boatingcertificate.com/Tennessee/02_LawsAndSafetyEquipment/13_Personal_Watercraft.aspx
Here is a part of them: -
PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICES (PFD)on Recreational Vessels
No person shall operate or permit the operation of a vessel on the waters of the state unless the vessel has on board United States Coast Guard approved personal flotation devices.
Tennessee Child Life Jacket Law
All children 12 years of age and younger are required to wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved PFD, while on the open deck of a recreational boat, when the boat is underway.
More TN Life Jacket Requirements
In addition to the wearable Type I, II, III, or V for each person on a boat, all boats 16 feet and greater (except canoes and kayaks) must carry at least one type IV floatation device on board. Anyone onboard, or being towed by a PWC, must wear a Type I, II, III, or V PFD. Inflatable PFDs are prohibited.
A U. S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device must be worn by each person on board vessels being operated within specifically marked areas below any dam.
Tennessee PWC Laws
Personal Watercraft” (PWC) means a vessel propelled by machinery which is designed to be operated by a person sitting, standing or kneeling on the vessel rather than being operated by a person sitting or standing inside the vessel.
Everyone on a PWC must wear a Type I, II, III or V personal flotation device as approved by the USCG. Inflatables are prohibited.
PWC may be operated only between sunrise and sunset.
Persons under 12 years of age may not operate a personal watercraft unless an adult is on board who can take immediate control of the boat.
Towing: - Personal watercraft being used to tow skiers, surfboards or other devices must be equipped with 2 mirrors (at least 2 1/2 by 4 inches) or have a person, 12 years of age or older, to observe the progress of the skier. The mirrors must be mounted on each side of the personal watercraft (not on the handle bars).
Reckless operation of a PWC:
Any operation which endangers life, limb, or property. Maneuvers such as, but not limited to, weaving through congested vessel traffic, jumping the wake of another vessel unreasonably or unnecessarily close to said vessel or when visibility around said vessel is obstructed, or riding unreasonably or unnecessarily close to ramps, docks, or the shore. Jumping the immediate wake (within 100 feet) of another vessel, weaving through congested vessel traffic and riding close to ramps, docks, or the shore is considered reckless operation.
Carriage Requirements (wearing it is the best choice):
There must be a wearable life jacket (Type I, II, or III or V) for each person on the boat, USCG approved, and of the appropriate size for the intended wearer. In addition, there must be one throwable Type IV on all boats 16 feet or longer (canoes and kayaks are exempt).
(1) Vessels less than sixteen feet (4.9 meters) in length, and canoes and kayaks of any length, must have one Type I, II, or III PFD of the proper size for each person on board.
RECKLESS OPERATION, NEGLIGENT, OR GROSS NEGLIGENT OPERATION
The boat operator is responsible for any action that has the potential of endangering life, limb or property. These actions may be deemed reckless, whether intentional or not.
Bow riding.
Damage caused by the wake of his/her boat. Know the location of no wake zones and what minimum distances you are allowed to operate a boat near docks, piers, boathouses, boat ramps and people in the water.
Not carrying the required safety equipment.
Crossing hazardous inlets and bars.
Excessive speed
Reckless Operation in Tennessee is defined as any act which endangers life, limb or property.
Examples of reckless operation are:
Operating a vessel in swimming areas.
Riding on seatbacks, gunwales, transoms or pedestal seats while above an idle speed.
Excessive speed in crowded areas, dangerous areas or during restricted visibility.
Operating an overloaded vessel.
Towing a skier in a crowded area where a fallen skier is likely to be hit by other vessels or towing in areas where the skier is likely to strike an obstacle.
Using a personal watercraft to jump the immediate wake of another vessel.
Violations are punishable by a fine of $2500 and six months in jail. Additionally, the Coast Guard may impose a civil penalty of up to $5,000 and imprisonment of one year
Owner's Responsibility
The owner of a vessel may be responsible for any injury or damage done by his or her vessel whether the owner is present or not. This shall not hold true if the vessel is used without the owner's consent.
SPEED LAWS
Slow-No Wake
Vessels operating in areas designated as “Slow-No wake” shall be governed by the following definitions;
“Slow-No wake” shall be defined as a vessel traveling at or below idle speed, or at such speed that the boat or its wake (waves) is not sufficient to cause possible injury or damage to other persons, boats, or property.
Vessels may not be used, operated, or anchored in such a way that interferes with or blocks vessel traffic in designated channels.
Unless otherwise marked, all vessels operating within 300 feet of a commercial boat dock must do so at a slow wake speed regardless of whether or not the area is marked by buoys.
TWRA ACCESS AREAS
Additional laws apply in TWRA Access Areas. The following acts are strictly prohibited:
Disorderly conduct.
The use of intoxicants or other behavior-modifying substances.
The use of firearms except during regular hunting season.
Target shooting.
Swimming from or near boat ramps or in a way that interferes with boat launching or recovery.
There are many more laws I haven't posted. Most are common sense and common to many states. Interestingly, that there seems to be no mention of inflatable water toys other than the towables. However, I'll bet they have to be moored close to a dock or shore at night and during the day they have to be in certain areas only - not obstructing the main channel for example.

My last comment on the trampoline part of the water toy (not the rest of the toy). It is very common for homeowners insurance policies to forbid a trampoline in your yard. It's also a strong possibility that if you have a trampoline your homeowners insurance will be invalidated. Most people who have them never even consider this or check. If this is the case on land it's quite likely that it would be extended to water too. There's no reason why not. These 'toys' come with huge warnings, caveats and disclaimers so you can bet the manufacturers are aware of potential problems. How wise is it to offer this as part of the prize when other, less contentious, items could be offered that can be just as much fun?
Posted by: Clive at April 9, 2008 5:12 PM
I tried to vote today and the site wouldn't take my first pick. I reset my computer and came back to vote and was told that I had already voted today. Hmmmm..........
But, I'll never win anyway as I never have.
It's fun though thinking about the wonderful life on Watts Bar Lake.

Dear Keight, I guess my message was confusing. I have two dogs. They are sisters - a mixed breed of doberman, rottweiler, and lab. Tug of war is hilarious! They each got a leg of my husband's old jeans and split them right down the middle. Their favorite toy is...a cinder block!! Okay, I'll wait till later to decide on entering. Thanks!!
Posted by: Jan in AZ at April 9, 2008 8:30 PM
I love the floor plan on this one. I am having trouble finding things on this site. Where are the rules and prizes described? If I voted for the rocking chair am I entered? I know nothing about septic systems, but love garbage disposals. Where is this cabin? When does the show air?
Posted by: Dick Gruber at April 9, 2008 8:42 PM
Dear Bloggers: I'm learning lots from your comments. I, too, was not too thrilled with the choices for the cabinet hardware but voted for the bar even tho I know they are clothes rippers. The others were just kinda ordinary. Gotta go with the natural rocking chairs over the other choices. I love to rock on our front porch and watch our horses as they graze. It's just the right thing to do!!
I would like to see Cumberland Mtn. Stone used either at the foundation or for an outside feature. It is native to the Cumberland Plateau and I grew up in a home where the stone was used for a front wall and an outdoor barbecue built out of the stone. I really liked the outdoor fireplace from last year's cabin in the Smokies and hope that something similar can be done this year. Also, would love a screened in porch which could be used as a "sleeping porch" in order to experience the outside in the evening without the bugs and varmints getting too close.
One more thing, does anyone know (Watson?) where to get instructions on how to build a porch railing like the one used on last year's cabin? It was a branch and board design and I believe rhododrendon branches were used from the site excavation but don't know if other woods could be used with the same result.
I'm adding a website for a place in Rogersville, TN where they grow, mill and sell native Appalachian woods. They also build gorgeous items for homes. Their wood products are grown and harvested by them and the woodworkers, carvers and furniture builders in my family consider it a great treat to visit them in the old school house where their business is housed. http://www.sustainablelumber.com/

I agree with the person who reminded us that voting on the trampoline - injuries will happen and do you really want to be responsible for that especially a neck injury that results in a broken back in a child??? It does happen. Think again before you vote for this item. Not a good idea as Clive stated you will be spending all your time watching kids.
Safety and not show is the best way to promote a healthy environment.

Helen! Helen! Helen! (and Katie, too!)
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
What a sweetie you are ... in more ways than one!
Don't be too surprised if someday you hear a knock on your door, and look out to see someone standing there holding a cup of sugar and a jar of Sunshine Tea! That will be me!
It would be a real pleasure to meet you in person, but for now let me just say again, thank you so very much for helping me to deliver on my promise to Watson and for making the Cabin Blog so enjoyable for us all.
Wouldn't you just love to be in the room when the bag of sugar finally makes its way to Watson -- I imagine the presentation going something like one of those games kids play in the school yard where a secret message is whispered down a line of people and then, the last person reveals the message for all to hear!
Makes me smile just thinking about it!

Hi Clive..
Judging from Heading South's comment that followed yours, that Red Drink must have some pretty unusual ingredients. Sounds like it is in the same "not for human consumption" category that the drink I brew and call coffee falls into! I grind (yet somehow ruin)fresh, organic coffee beans from Whole Foods to produce it! Whenever there is a get together, everybody makes me promise NOT TO MAKE THE COFFEE! I am not even allowed to serve it, after someone else brews it. Cross-contamination worries, I guess!(smile)
If we all ever do figure out a way to get together for a 2008 Blog Cabin Bloggers' Meet and Greet Party and subsequent Reunions in years to come, I would like to try one of your good pints of English ale. Isn't there a popular drink called a Shanty(sp) that adds lemonade to the glass with the ale?
Kim Mc (haven't seen a post from him for awhile) has a writer friend/neighbor who makes some mighty fine home brew. Do you and Susan home brew?
Anyone else into home brewing or wine making? Or... does anyone have a "worst drink ever served" story to share with the rest of us?

Hello all, have been rather busy for the past 3 weeks and havent been on, glad to see that things are moving right along on the cabin.
As for the water toys I don't particularly care which one wins (not a necessity) what everyone would enjoy more is a small dock (am I right folks?) to sit on, fish off of or launch a small boat, canoe or kayak.
The green items are not very expensive, why not all of them!
I agree with most about the lights, they need (most of them) 8 hours of sunlight to fully charge and aren't very bright.
The rain barrel is nice but if you are really thinking green then a cistern would be way more beneficial (I've mentioned this in previous blog entries) although a pump would be needed to use the rain water but said pump could be powered by a solar panel, that would be 2 green items that would pay for themselves rather quickly.
Anyone into gardening or just conservation would love this feature.
Tumbling composters are very much worth the time and effort put into them.
Adirondak chairs or rockers, I think they would both work.
All I have for now, keep on blogging y'all!
Stay safe,
D.J.
Posted by: D.J. Smith Jr. at April 10, 2008 1:41 AM
You know Clive, that rain barrel might also be a good place to store crawfish for the fishing journeys also!
Something to think about for the fishermen?
Following Linda L's excellent comment of putting a bullhead fish in there to keep the mosquitoes down.
We must also remember George Jones is from around these parts. I am afraid when he comes to learn about his Tennessee Rocker is in serious competition with an Adirondack chair? ...well I don't want to know what might happen. Let's hope he doesn't bring his buddy George Foreman over to clean house so to speak. If you know anything about Country Music you will likely undertsand what I am saying.
Posted by: BlognBob at April 10, 2008 3:51 AM
Love the new green choices. We weren't sure about the water toys. They seem to be so big. Where would you store them? Or how would you get them in or out of the water? Just wondering.

Helen, Thank you for responding to my question. It is so nice to know there are other kids to play with and get to know should I be so lucky to win such a beautiful home. And also its nice to know there are friendly people that would make great neighbors. We live in Levittown PA and everyone calls it Leave it town. We currently are renting a 2 bedroom condo and don't have much room for all our kids and there is nothing much for them to do around here, but we are making do for now. My husband and I have been looking for a home but the housing market is not very good right now with the high interest rates makes it very hard. Thanks again and good luck. P.S maybe we could swap brownie recipes as my friends and family are always begging me to make my special home made brownies

What a blast it would be if the winner of this home had a party in which all the other bloggers were invited to attend. I can see all the people splashing around in the water and having a ball!

Are dogs allowed? I thought I read somewhere that they aren't.

You know what might add some more light and character to the Master Bedroom is to widen that door slot just a little more and add in a door with stained glass windows on either side of the door.
It might be a little nice to have some sort of window out that side for the Master bath as well.
And perhaps a small window in the Master closet along that side.
Viewing the photos of that side from the outside it appears odd and rather a blank wall. It needs just a little something else on that side to personalize the Master Bedroom area. I was rather surprised to see only a single door for that entire side myself. I think , it wasn't really so apparent until the pictures came afterwards.
I still think large log pillars would look rather nice out front for the cover to the entry. And that small deck might be nicer if it were tiered or multi level. Filling in that front area. Unless it is actually going to be back filled in as to the grade specs on the the blueprints. I might guess that front/ or street side porch is mighty small for the likings of most folks from TN who love having those rockers out to greet folks. Just ask a few locals.

Helen you sound like the kind of neighbor I want. Unfortunately your daughter wouldn't be happy because I don't have kids. You are welcome to come north to visit me. She would have a great time at our beaches too. We could fry walley over a camp fire and make rhubarb crisp. LLL

Helen,
You are a sweetie! I hope some families with kids your daughters age moves in soon. You truly live on a lil piece of heaven on earth. The bloggers are such a wealth of information and are very generous at sharing it too. Thanks a million for the info.
As for the composter, I have one rule I follow. If it comes from the ground it can be composted. No animal products or by products are allowed. Animal products draw animals to the composter. No eggs, meat, cheese or fats should be put into it if you don't want animals attracted to it. I learned this from hgtv's website. I hope that helps.

to keight; my katie is ok just sooo scared when dogs get that scared they smell like really bad b.o. i didnt know this. she must have had about 20 puncture wounds all over her body, but no teares. at first my husband said leave it and i did so about 6mo later 2 of those dogs killed another neighbors poodle. then i got serious and called animal control and the co sheriff finally they penned them up [they had 4 so they ran like a pack]the now we call them convicts row .
so im hoping the natural rocker wins
oh the composter geez guys you can only put plant stuff in there and eggs shells coffee some paper leaves, no fats no meat no plastic i dont notice a smell we pay a co to come out and get our garbage they also recycle the dumpster is divided actually is pretty affordable.

Personally I think all the water toys are a waste of money and time as part of this cabin. There is no dock or boat included so there is no way half of them can be used unless the winner has a good size boat (highly unlikely). The other three require towing out and anchoring by at least two lines. They must be off the water or alongside a dock or shore at night. This means the winner would need to tow them out (how without a boat?) from the shore (no dock included) every time they were to be used and survey a part of the lake to ensure it was deep anough and free of underwater obstructions. That again requires a boat with sonar. These are silly options without a boat or dock and compltely impractical.
Why not let us vote on ceiling fans, porch screens, porch lights, outdoor fireplaces or gazebos near the lake which would all be useful and a real bonus to the cabin?

Hey Clive....
You saved me lots of time cutting and pasting today! I was just getting ready to post the TVA laws regarding water craft and lifejackets etc. on Watts Bar lake from the same web source:
http://boatingcertificate.com/Tennessee/02_LawsAndSafetyEquipment/13_Personal_Watercraft.aspx
It is good to know safety issues are an important issue on the lake and hope they are strictly enforced for everyone's wellbeing.
That said, maybe DIY could exchange the water toys for that Dumb Waiter idea that has been floating around (!)the Blog for ages and seems like an add-on that everyone is in favor of having in the cabin. I agree that the lake offers a multitude of opportunities for fun even if there is not a big floating party barge in sight! I figure that this extended "family of Bloggers" that has formed over the last few months wouldn't even miss the inflatables .... not to infer that we are full of hot air (wink!) but rather that giving the slightest opportunity, fun times will surely happen!
And, speaking of fun: Helen and A. Muse --- that bag of sugar for Watson is sure to cause some! I, too, would love to know what is said to Watson when the package full of white stuff finally makes its way to him! I've played that game of passing on a message with my kids and the results are always gigglelicious!
You two are at the top of my list of fun mischieve makers today!

Dear Misty and Rich (April 9)
Thank you so very much for your kind invitation to the cabin if you win … I accept with much anticipation at the chance of meeting you, as well as Helen and any of the other Cabin Bloggers who you invite that find their way to your door the same day I plunk down in one of those rockers!
And, please, I for one, would like to know the signs and symptoms. You mentioned you were misdiagnosed (and, Heading South, don't you also have some physical limitations caused by complications from a missed tick bite?) Whether any of us win the cabin or not, vacations could put anyone of us in tick territory ... Like Carrie Miracle posted: If you see a threat, then shout a warning for your blind friends.
To BlognBoB (April 10) I was wondering about the MB wall with only the single door, too. Does anyone know if it is possible to make structural changes to the exterior walls after they are in place? I thought I read somewhere that the logs are prepared for the home and cut to size requirements and then numbered and labeled for building on site. I imagine it like re-building a giant jig saw puzzle with all the correct placement of the pieces essential to achieving completion. I guess my question is: Can the logs be cut off and open spaces be changed and still maintain the structural intregrity of the (load bearing) wall?
One final note: For all those posting with questions as to how to get to the link for the page to enter to win the Blog Cabin Sweepstakes. If I am reading the info correctly, that link won't be appearing until sometime in August. Right now voting is open only for making choices during the building phase of the cabin. Each vote cats counts towards a certain item being added to the cabin.
I am confident Watson will let us know when the time comes that a link to vote to enter to win the cabin has been activated. You will let us know, won't you Watson?

Well, you boys made quick work of getting that roof on and entry in place. Good Job ! Well, I guess that entry was part of the pre-ordered package. Sorry if I might have caused any hearts to race with my suggestion for the entry modification. That was not my intention. Just thought some larger diameter log pillars might enhance things a bit.
Posted by: BlognBob at April 10, 2008 1:39 PM
I'm thinking the front entrance looks a bit odd. It appears that there is going to be a small porch with steps leading up to it, no ramp for wheeled vehicles as yet anywhere. Then on each side there will be a sort of gap/hole before the mud room or the Master bath. I can't help wondering whether this space would be better used if the porch floor were extended to cover this gap. I doubt that anyone would want to plant trees in that space given the proximity of roots to the basement wall so it appears to be just dead space. A slightly extended porch on both sides, not even under cover necessarily, will allow planters and other things to decorate the entrance and add curb appeal, and give the winner space to add a ramp if they need without modifying the steps or adding extra decking to accommodate it. Please DIY do try to include design features that, with easy modifications, can enable the less ambulatory to enjoy the cabin without extensive alterations.
Keight, I couldn’t agree more with the dumbwaiter swap for the water toys. StevieT has stated very clearly that without a dock these are next to useless unless the winner is a boat owner. It’s more likely that a handicapped person would win this that a boat owner. I would add ceiling fans and a porch screened area as ‘musts’, or at least worth a vote together with the dumb waiter and grey water cistern.
Ahmed Hassan: Clive, you dont miss a beat. You're right these two spaces are weird I was looking at them the other day trying to figure out what a practical solution might be. I'll be back over there with another one pf the DIY experts and the twins and discuss what might be able to happen then let you know.
Maybe Helen will stop buy again with some sweets to encourage the brainstorming session.

Keight ,
I know in stick built homes as long as you can add the required support to compensate for the stress load , you can change a door or open a window. ie...framing in additional support.
Really , on a log home I have no idea. These guys are the experts. As far as knocking out or changing a support wall to modify a room. I would say NO! I would have to think impossible. But I would have to believe you could add a window or widen a door space as long as not on a spliced section above. And of course reviewing it with the architect first. Honestly it is just a guess for me. But, if it doesn't happen , then that is probably the answer.
Yes Clive, reading thru the boating restrictions at first I thought this was the work of Keight. You surprised me too. I am very slow at reading so I take a lot of time when there is a big blog or information.

Clive I think I will reconsider the waterpark vote. I should have thought that one through better! I am a mom after all! Safety first, always! I do like the waterpark for my child, but as we all know it would be a magnet for a kid's dare devils park. And we really don't want any broken boned & bruised up kids. I love my kids, nieces, nephews and their friends there would be no way I would want to endanger them in any way. I thought it would be a cool toy for them. But I never thought about the impatience that some kids have and the aggressive competitiveness that comes along with things like this toy would encourage. It appears to be a fun toy, but it really does need constant supervision & The company / maker does need to put a little bit more design thought into it's overall design to encourage and manage one jumper at a time, doesn't it? Maybe the company will see bloggers ideas and change it for the better. As for "captain" going down with the "waterpark". I can't imagine that any parent would let their kids on that thing without a life jacket, maybe they should wear a helmet too! Thanks for the lakes water rules also.. Good to know in advance.
My husband would go for the tackles and make me save the rods. He does love his fishing gear. He kids me all the time that his old boat, gear and trucks is his first loves. I could just see him out there with a scuba mask & tank on trying to save the gear! He's a pretty good gadget man, He would probably hook that rain barrell up to a aerator and make it into a bait tank too! just joking
Thanks for the encouragement and backup guys for a boat being included with the home. They do have the community boat dock, so a personal dock would not be necessary as long as you kept it parked in the designated areas. Bass Pro (kodak, tn & memphis, tn) or any boat dealership in the area. Just give it some serious thought. You could get alot of free advertisement on tv and on the web. Just for the simple act of donating a boat. And I just know alot of the diy fans out there would be ever thankful and would not forget your kindness..
Amuse thanks for the yummy tea recipes. I remember various family members sitting there sun-tea jars on the hoods of their vehicles. They had the jars with the little flip spouts and us kids would sneak and drink from it, when they wasn't looking. And we just thought it was such a hoot to get away with that.
Misty thanks for the invite and suntea recipe you keep feeling better now. Wow what a fun life you have, with adventures like chasing monkeys and gators and having horses! How fun! You are so much more adventurous than the normal person. "you go girl" have fun! Sorry about the tick causing you so much health problems. I also hope diy incorporates more wheelchair friendliness into the home with the future in mind. You just never know who will win or when and if something could happen to change their lives and when anyone is building a home people should consider & keep future handicapped possibilities in mind. Whether it be the homeowners or future homeowners in mind. What about taking care of elderly parents etc.
Just a reminder friends: People do need to check themselves, when playing outside, especially check their kids and pets regularly for the ticks, when playing in fields, around trees or at the lake. Because ticks do like these areas and they do dig into your skin right quick like. If you have one deeply attached you should go to the dr to have them removed or save the tick somehow. Just in case you could get sick from it.
Kate by the Lake's husband: Sorry, I was up in front of the house and they were behind the house fishing the lake. All I could think about was switching places with them so I could be nosy for the moment but I really couldn't see if they had a catch in their hands or not. It did look like they had flyfishing rods and waders on if I remember correctly. And yes they do have fishing tournaments there my husband was in a bass club at one time, a few years back and missed out on his watts bar tour because he had to work or was sick. He keeps saying everytime I mention the place. They do have good fishing there. But my mind drifts to decorating the house and I forgot which one he said.
I'd say Helen Miko knows which fish can be caught.
Miss Kate I don't live in tn. I live in ky, but we drove to see the blog cabin and I was only there for aprx 30 minutes. We did drive through the subdivision, quite a pretty place, It does have paved streets, I saw the underground electric boxes, I don't remember if it had lights. We did also drive by the 2 houses for sale, they are quite different in style, But quite nice. No we did not go into them. They had an open house that day in one of them but it was over before we arrived. I did see them on the subdvision website. They had pictures of them on there. I also saw a dark brown home tucked in the cove way over a few lots to the right side of the blog cabin. And you can see a few homes across the lake. That's the only houses in the subdivions I remember! And of course I saw the gatehouse coming in. And helen's house she confirmed that I saw her place before and their is home close to her. I'm not sure if I saw the community boat dock for the subdivision but it looked as if they might be trying to extend it some and then I saw a graded lot to the right of the dock. Not sure if that would be a parking lot for the dock or a place for a home. I'll try to look at the map again and see if I can figure the location out better...
Well the porches are looking awesome, I'm a little disappointed with the small front entrance porch. I really wanted it extended to make it a true wrap around porch. Don't get me wrong it is gorgeous. They may have something really special planned for the sides of the entrance there.
I am wondering if they are going to fill in dirt up to the front of the house or if there will be some gorgeous round arched, rocked steps up to the entrance porch.
I agree it would be fun to see the blog cabin series and on the winners show: find Dolly sitting on the porch playing her guitar and singing the winner a welcome home song. I've been to dollywood alot of times. I love it! I love her! I saw her log cabin and her coat of many colors she has it
