Submit names for Blog Cabin 2008!

Hello Trusty Blogcabinites,

In the spirit of Blog Cabin 2007's naming contest (remember the Rocky Top Retreat?), we are now accepting suggestions for the "official" name of Blog Cabin 2008.

Please comment below with your entries and feel free to include a short explanation of why you think your suggestion should be selected (not required however - sometimes the names speak for themselves). We'll take nominations through May 18th, then choose the Top 5 and open up the voting beginning Monday, May 19 through the 31st.

Cheers,
Watson, DIYnetwork.com Manager

Editor's Note: Our friends at Lakefront Estates have a special announcement they'd like to share concerning their Grand Opening (this link opens a PDF file)!

Nameing your home is SUCH a personal thing. Perhaps something simple like hillside hideaway? Also, I see that the shape of the fire pit is up for vote but the site wouldn't let me vote on that one? It all looks too wonderful for words! Today is my birthday so I wish we were to the entering stage, perhaps I'd be lucky :-) Continued congrats on a great job ~ well done to all!

How about Lakeside Retreat?

Posted by: Mary Owens at May 3, 2008 3:25 PM

I'd Love the cabin to be named "Shore Livin" or second choice "Shore Nuff". It just seems cabinish?

Posted by: S Mallow at May 3, 2008 4:44 PM

Lakefront Dreams is my choice for the Blog Cabin. It would be my dream to live there and to have a place for our entire family to enjoy. I visited Lakefront Estates before any signage was posted in January and fell in love with the location. I have watched the building progress every day and have dreamed of winning. We have many friends in Chattanooga and our grandchildren would love to have their Nana and Pappaw on the lake.

A name for the cabin - now you're making us work! How about -
Resty's Acre since it will be restful once the work is done. Or maybe -

the Sunset Sonata since retirement (the sunset on a career) will be graceful yet stirring in such a beautiful space.

OR -

call it MINEownLUCKYplace if I win it!

Ok, I'll keep working on it! But what's with the voting? - after I voted I got an option result that wasn't on the voting ticket - the shape of the fire pit! I didn't get to vote on that item yet there it was in the results??? There are some VERY clever people in this blog - I'll be very interested in reading their ideas for a name.

Posted by: Therese at May 3, 2008 7:44 PM

Hi Watson! I think that the blog Cabin 2008 should be called "The Fishing Hollow Dream Home"
It's great for Fishing, it's in a Hollow, and it's certainly a Dream Home.
The slide presentation is really beautiful.
I did notice that the fireplace flag stone apprears unleveled on the left of the hearth.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Cabin Fever
Would be a great name for this home.

There is no place or prescription that could cure a case of cabin fever quicker than our big beautiful log home. And who wouldn't just love to be stuck there during the snowy winter blues or in the summer storms & heat!

Cove Castle or
Lakeside Mansion
It sits on the cove and looks like a castle perched on it's little hill from the lake.

Dreams Do Come True:

self explanatory for the winner

Hellllooooo DIY!

I thought of a name for this lovely home... how 'bout....

"The Watts Bar Homestead"....or just "The Homestead".

Keeping with the log cabin theme :))

Not surprised on the wonderful craftsmanship ~ pat yourselves on the back!

Happy Logging!

This is for Ahmed, diy crew
The house is looking great with the awesome windows & stacked rock on the basement walls. Really love it! It'll match those tall fire places beautifully. I'm looking for a great big mantle to be placed on them for the stockings or garlands at christmas time.

Yes! I knew there would be one and I'm so excited about the fire pit vote coming. I can't wait to see our options. As for the Shapes, well I don't know till I see the examples. I often think round , like a campfire. But, I would like to know where it will be located before I decide!

If it the pit will be gas or wood?
Obviously if it's on the lower patio Then I'd most likely vote round, to fit in the middle of that round patio voted in. But I'm hoping it will be down closer to the lake with a nice rocked patio and those adirondack chairs circling it! Fish later in the evening and dry out too!
I'm still hoping for rockers! You can put the winning rocker choice on the side porches please!

What's happening with the front porch?

I thought is was under discussion for a possible change...
Is it going to be creatively extended out or lowered some for easier access?
You are putting the rock all the way down, to the ground, on the front basement walls so I imagine you wouldn't be doing all that work if you were intending on putting in alot of fill in dirt to raise the ground level there.
The porch is really high off the ground and a small platform, so I worry about people coming in the door loosing their balance. Especially when the kids are shoving mom or papa out of the way to be the first in the house!

I was just a wondering have you stained the logs yet?

Posted by: Carrie Miracle at May 3, 2008 9:40 PM

Could it be my Lakeside Logia??? Or perhaps the Cabin by the Lake....or Home, Sweet Home!

OH, boy! I hope so!

Posted by: Becky at May 3, 2008 10:05 PM

Golden Sky Haven....is the name you should name the cabin

Posted by: Christine Mahon at May 3, 2008 10:12 PM

... CHAMOMILE CABIN ....

Breathing in the fresh mountain air and sipping our chamomile tea...And rocking on our back deck (even if we have to bring the rockers with us)... I think just about everyone has pictured them~selves in this beautiful setting!

Posted by: Susan (from OH) at May 3, 2008 10:23 PM

Ahmed;
I think "Homestead Hollow" would be GREAT! I picked that because...#1. The cabin is kind of in a hollow and....#2. Because it's the kind of home I would've built if I was a Homesteader way back when....ONLY this is SOOOO much nicer!!!

Posted by: Becky from New Mexico at May 3, 2008 10:28 PM

Ahmed;
What is the uusual length of time to see your blog online once it's been posted? I'm sure you get this ? alot, I was just curious.

Posted by: Becky from New Mexico at May 3, 2008 10:32 PM

Yippeeee!!! A FIRE PIT!!!! Those Adirondack chairs will look great down there. Thank you Watson, Ahmed and whoever else needs a thank you. Thank you also for the updated slides. Just one big THANK YOU. Still thinking about a name for this humble cabin. Taj Mahal ....Oh wait that's already been used.

Posted by: Jenny at May 3, 2008 10:50 PM

Goodness, How do you describe such a beautiful home in only a few words? "Lakeview Paradise" feels good to me but really it is such a beautiful home just a few words can not possibly do it justice.

Posted by: BlognBob at May 3, 2008 11:27 PM

First I want to say. Rest in peace Eight Belles. May you now run wild and free in heavens endless green pastures.

Thank you for the slide shows of the cabin. I found myself daydreaming about lazy days on the porch gazing at the beautiful serene lake.

Name~ Serenity. :0)

How about "Waters Edge" or "Shady Rest"?

Posted by: Art at May 4, 2008 2:03 AM

Can someone explain why 3 people so far have been able to vote on the shape of the firepit, yet it isn't on the official site of items to vote on? Just wondering.
As to a suggestion for a name, how about something that uses the word "volunteer". Tennessee is the Volunteer state, the bloggers volunteer their ideas, etc.

Posted by: Becky at May 4, 2008 3:27 AM

WELL I WAS NOT ABLE TO VOTE FOR PAINT COLOR AND NOW I AM NOT ABLE TO VOTE FOR THE SHAPE OF THE FIRE PIT. SOMETHING IS AMISS IN THE VOTEING CATOGORY.CAN IT BE FIXED OR WERE THESE NOT AVALIABLE FOR VOTEING? THANKS

Posted by: GINA at May 4, 2008 5:48 AM

I have a few ideas for the Blog Cabin name. I hope this is the right place to submit them to, as I'm new.
1) THE POINT
2) THE VIEW
3) CONCEPTION POINT - for conceiving the idea to build the newest and what looks to be the best house here.
Thanks

Posted by: sandy at May 4, 2008 6:25 AM

Dear Diy Friends,

This cabin would be my "Lodge On The Lake", for sure. The word "lodge" always makes me think of a substantial yet homey dwelling, such as what many indian tribes lived in.

I've also always loved the name, "Glimmerglass" which is very suitable for a lakeside home.

Keep up the good work - I love what you've done so far!

Tranquil Lake Cabin.............just looks tranquil to me........

Good morning Watson, Ahmed and the whole

Incredible Blog Cabin Team! ( including all you

humble, hardworking interns~ ( you know who you

are!!!)

Yes, we fondly remember ol' "Rocky Top

Retreat" !

And hope the lucky winners of last year's Blog

Cabin are truly enjoying their cozy retreat :o)

Yes !!! We all get our chance to suggest names

for this year's awesome, amazing beautiful log

home!

Here's our idea..." Lakeside Lodge "

We look forward to reading everyone's suggestions

for bodacious names and to seeing the results of

the voting !

Good luck everyone !

Love,

Goldilocks and The Three Bodacious Bears :o)

ps. How's that canoe kit coming along guys ?

What?? You haven't had time to get to it

yet ??!! heheh.

Food For Thought...( and this is just tongue-in-

cheek humor, so Bloggers ~ take it as a fun

comment, no ruffled feathers, pleeze :o) We

wouldn't want any " Terratorial- Robin- Window-

Crashing-Behavior " !! hehheh.

( If Ahmed were to build all the Bloggers'

suggestions ~

He would be ninety two years old, and ALL the

Blog Cabin Team would have beards down to the

ground!

The Blog Cabin would never be finished...it

would be the longest project ever, and cover at

least three homesites!! Deck slides, dumb

waiters, laundry chutes ( probably not allowed

due to fire risks and building codes!?) outdoor

shower, fish gutting table, RV and boat storage,

boat pier, sauna, walk-in pantry, fishing gear

room, workshop, gardening storage, greenhouse,

stairs from all sides of the Blog Cabin to the

lake, elevator, handicap ramps, extra-wide

driveway, tube "lights" for covered porches, hot

tub, work-out room, laundry room, recycling

station, solid gold mailbox, ( okay, I made that

last one up, I didn't actually read that request

in past blogs !! heheh.) Did I miss anything

here ?!!

D'y'all see a recurring theme ?

We bloggers seem to want the "biggest fair share"

and we want everying twice !!

It's good to have a wish list and to dream...but

let's be fair and not make it Ahmed's

nightmare !!!

Happy Building,Happy Blogging and let's hear a big

cheer for everyone who is doing their level

best on the build site and for the continued

spirit of fun on the Blog Site :o) YEAH !!!

Watson, I noticed that there are 3 votes for a fire pit already? I am guessing that it will be one of the next voting features? And who voted on them? Just wondering.
I think you should call it the "Luxurious Lakefront Cabin" or Luxurious Lakefront Home, after all it is not just a cabin and it is a place to live in luxury and its on the lake. I love it no matter what we call it. There has been so much time and effort and love put into this cabin. I am just so excited with the progress you guys are making.

Posted by: Angela Fletcher at May 4, 2008 9:16 AM

Let's see now. I would suggest BAR NONE (just a little play on Watts Bar) or ROBIN'S NEST (thinking of all the birds you would see off the great decks of the Big Beautiful Log Home). I'll have to work on this a bit and get back to ya. My husband suggests "BIG BROWN" but I think he has the Derby winner in mind. That's understandable, we had disagreements on what to name our 4 kids and you can see just why:0) Have a grand day, all!

Posted by: Tisser at May 4, 2008 9:33 AM

Just wanting to ask about the fire pit. I see 3 votes for it, but have not seen the voting for it. I would probably go along the the circular pit anyway.

Thinking about it this morning, makes me think maybe ... MAJESTIC MOOD ... would be a better choice! Or even ... MORNING MAJESTY... with an American flag facing the sun rise!

Posted by: Susan (from OH) at May 4, 2008 9:59 AM

My favorite: Lakefront Lodge

or - Lakefront Lodge at Watt's Barr

or - Log Living at Lakefront

or - Water View at Watt's Barr

Posted by: jac at May 4, 2008 10:04 AM

Thank you, Thank You, Thank you for the slideshow of the cabin so we can see the whole picture of what is going on with the progress!! This was wonderful. I have not been able to get into the video section of the website (webmaster did not help) so this was such a great surprise to be able to see all angles of the "Lake House!" I love the stone going on over the cement on the cellar portion - looks elegant. Disappointed thought that the half oval windows in the front are not stained glass - that would just add to the beauty of this home.

Carrie, it looks like that back porch isn't too far from the lake so I think that slide would work! lol At least a firemen's pole would be great. If you get down for the open house check it out and see - it might be a rather large slide but that means more fun.

Ahmed and Watson how come there are three votes for the Fire Pit but yet this has not been opened to everyone to vote on yet????? It doesn't seem fair that others get to vote before it is opened to everyone. I voted and then saw this area yet I wasn't given the choice to vote on this option. Come on fess up!!!!!

Helen M. is there another cabin being built next to ours on the left looking from the front of the cabin or it that just our crew taking up more than our area??? And if we have new neighbors what type of home are they building on that lot?

Wish I could come down for the open house - that is going to be so cool. Helen you have to let us know the progress and the prizes that were given out - hopefully you will be a winner. Carrie if you get to go as well we want to hear from you and hopefully you will be a winner also. Maybe you both can take pictures and send then so we can see them - how about it Watson and Ahmed if the ladies take pictures will you post them for us to see?????

As for a name for our cabin - put me in for "Tennessee Lake House or Watts Bar Lake House" or "Lake House" for short.

Been raining all weekend so have been busy with work. But suppose to be back in the 70's next week - can't wait just hope next weekend will be the same with lots of sun.

Cabincraver2008 hope you are doing better - prayers are with you. Say "HI" to Erika and wish her well.

Take care all. Going back to work!

I hope I get to go too to the open house. Not sure yet! Hubby sounded interested but didn't confirm. But yes we would defintitely take pictures. Alot of them. I'd describe it to you as well as I could. You're right maybe that slide will work since that was what Ahmed thought I was talking about originally. (LOL) That firepole would be nice when running late for work at the garage end porch. (LOL) I want to remember every inch of This house. I may not win, It's gonna be a long shot, for sure! But hey, dreams do & can come true right. In case We don't win at least then I will know what my dream house is when we build someday .

And I love your cabin name

~~~~ Lake house ~~~~~
for the cabin, that about says it all.
Loved the movie too!
I have more suggestions my first suggestions were kind of lame!
~~~Tennessee homestead~~~~ Or
~~Homestead Heritage~~~ because of the story behind the home how it was built and given away.
would be a good name to consider too! I
combined the suggestion of Unspoken Mitzie and Becky.

~~~~~~Family First~~~~
~~~~~~Lure Lodge~~~~~~~~~~
I feel like the fish, I'm enticed by the bait. I'm hooked on this cabin.

Gotta go

Posted by: Carrie Miracle at May 4, 2008 2:25 PM

My suggestions are "Lady of the Lake" or "Lakeside Legend", to borrow from Arthurian legends. What a beautiful home this will be, no matter what it is named!

BEACON HILL RETREAT

We all have come to sense the unmistakable pull that “our” big, beautiful Log Home possesses. Like a Beacon, it stands, overlooking the Watts Barr Lake, and guides us all to its rustic good looks, beckoning porches, and outstanding views.

Once inside, the undeniable spirit of camaraderie, good times and the promise of cherished memories seems to echo and warmly embrace everyone. All who gather there seem to sense that this home is extraordinary. I wish the best for this special dwelling .... may it always be like a beacon, guiding family and friends, new and renewed, to its safe harbor of contentment and harmony.

I submit BEACON HILL RETREAT to be considered as the name for the 2008 Blog Cabin Home in Lakefront Estates.

What a fun idea to have us pick out a name
for the "Blog Cabin"! Since I am a big fan
of helping mother nature....here are a few.
1. "Earth-Friendly Lodge"
2. "Eco-Manor"
3. "Ever-Green Dream"
4. "Green Lodge"
All of you are doing a great job of showing us
how to save the earth...just a little bit helps!

Re:The Three Votes,
I noticed quite a few comments as to the 3 votes listed for the firepit. So, in defense of those whom I have never before met but still I call friend.
Watson, Ahmed, The Twins, and all those who work on this project are permitted to vote along with us for the items going into this home , even though they do not have this most fortunate opportunity to enter to win as we do. I think it rather nice to know their opinions.
They do not have to give us a clue as to the next upcoming selections ,so this is a rather nice way to give us a sneak peak as to what is coming up next. Thank You for the hint guys !

Half way to heaven!!! Should be the cabins name . It would be such an honor to be blessed with the chance to live there till we reach the real mansion that is waiting on the other side. This was always our dream that you are building , But my husbands accident made it impossible to carry it out. He has a fishing buddy who moved on Watts Bar along time ago, Thank all involved for making the world a better place to live. And good luck and god bless us all!!!

I like Comfort Cabin, Blogged Cabin, Tranquility Cabin, and Serene Retreat.

Posted by: Shelly Hanneman at May 5, 2008 12:40 AM

I've been looking at those wonderful slides again and I want to ask exactly where the cabin sits on the lot? The lie of the land on both sides is lovely, but how much of it belongs to the cabin site?? Could you maybe mark it off with some flags so we could see it on the cabin cam?

I've more name suggestions:

Slew of Dreams
Tall Timbers
Cabin of Choice
Hopes 'N Dreams
Rockin' Robin (so much discussion of robins on the blog just had to throw that one in)
Sleepy Hollow
Luv 'N Dreams
Luv 'N Stuff
Cabin Cruising

Is there a winner in there??

"Lake Reflection"

After all isn't that what you look for in the lake. The morning sun reflecting off the water or the final flicker of light as the sun goes down.

That is what I look for in a lake.

It is also a place to reflect on life.

This home is a reflection of DIY's personalities and a quite nice one if I do say so myself.
I do love watching the DIY personalities do their projects even if I know I can't afford to do the project myself.

Posted by: Richard Gallaher at May 5, 2008 12:57 AM

maybe, "Lakeside Reflections" or “Reflections on the Lake"?

Anyway something that reflects the people that put a part of themselves into the cabin.

Good Morning, Ahmed and Watson and all the workers:

This is my first time writing regarding the Blog Cabin, although I have visited the site daily for over two years, now.

I have a fantastic idea for the name of the 2008 Blog Cabin. What about La Mirage? I know it's my idea of a lakeside oasis. This cabin is my dream. I cannot wait until the contest opens.

You guys are awesome!

Hello one and all,

Before you vote again for the firepit, give this idea some thought........the square or rectangle shapes (my favorite is rectangle) give you the most flexibility in the size and shape of the logs, etc. you can burn. There will likely be brush, small trees etc. available in the area and you can cut larger, longer pieces to burn.

Larger pieces, longer burning fire, less getting up and down to feed the fire!

Think about it.

I like the "Homestead Hallow" suggestion. It's cozy sounding and not as ostentatious as some of the other suggestions. I know the cabin's VERY upscale...but it needs a cozy-welcoming kind of name.

Soooooo Beautiful, thanks for ALL the new photos & videos, it's been so much fun watching this log home be born.

Our choices for names are:

DIY Lodge (Dream It's Your Lodge) for the DIY gang & bloggers

or

"Dreams Come True" (perfect for the lucky winner)

or

"Almost Heaven" (it's as close as we can get here on Earth)

I have enjoyed every moment watching this beautiful log home be built, many nights dreaming of living in it, reading all the fun blogs from EVERYONE, making new friends, and appreciating all the twins, Watson's, Ahmed's and all the crews hard work into building and making this such a beautiful home for whoever is lucky enough to win and for all the joy & dreams to those of us who don't.

I wish we could go to the opening but those of you lucky enough please have a great time and remember to thank everyone from all us bloggers, we'll be there in heart.

I think the official name of the 2008 Blog Cabin should be named "LAKE VIEW RETREAT" or "WATERFRONT RETREAT". It is such a gorgeous log home built on beautiful Watts Bar Lake it is truly a waterfront retreat. Seeing the sun rise and set from this home would be a DREAM come true to a very lucky winner.

Posted by: VT Charlene at May 5, 2008 11:11 AM

Hi bloggers;

How about Lakeside Log Manor

It sure isn't a cabin, from the views of the construction pictures it appears close to the lake, wanted to add log because the logs look beautiful.

If I won I would call it "unable to access" (laughing out loud)

I have to add one more variation on my previous suggestions.

Cozy Cumberland Cabin

I think that, just like last year's cabin's name reflected the area it is in, that this year's cabin's name should do the same. Remember that there may be many more cabins to come. In that vein, I think "Cumberland" should be part of the name. That is my two cents.

Robin Update- Birdbrains is still doing his thing. From my office window to the bedroom, back and forth. I'm half tempted to let hubby blast him with the water hose to scare him away. He's taken to screen walking now that we've opened the windows. {its been in the mid 60's here in MI during the day} He needs to find a female and fast. The helium baloons have no effect other than to entice him to other windows. Don't waste your money. They worked for a day or two and thats it. The only thing that seems to have any effect is the trees bursting into bloom. Oddly enough he stays away from that most often. I think he's tiring of this {I did after a few days} and hopefully he finds a mate soon.

Name of Cabin

1. Serenity Now - Yes, it's from Seinfeld, but after working in the noisy city, once I get to the cabin it will be Serenity Now!

2. Dew Drop Inn - As a teen I spent a summer working at a Youth Camp. This was the name of the cabin I lived in. Alot of the kids would come by because we made them feel at home. That's what I would do with the cabin. Invite everyone to Drop In.

3. Golden Dreams Cabin - This is where I want to spend my golden years dreaming in the beautiful cabin.

Thanks guys!

sorry had to do it..

Hi all...

Just a thought about all the great names being submitted.... It is going to be so hard to narrow the choices down to only 5 and then cast a lasting vote from May 19th through the 31st.

Here is just something to consider. I have been saying each name entered out loud, and adding the Community name or street name along with it. Just the way you would do it if you were inviting someone to visit for the very first time. I discovered that....

Since the community is called Lakefront Estates, any name that contains some form of the words LAKE or FRONT could cause our big beautiful log cabin to just blend in rather than stand out as it surely should, in all its splendiness!

Think about it... "Lakeside Estate in Lakefront Estates" OR try saying it with any of the "lakeside" add-ons: Retreat or Mansion or loggia or lodge or dreams or haven or chalet ---- They all sound a bit generic and/or redundant when paired with the Lakefront Estates location. While the names would do, they do not seem to address the unique spirit of the Log Home project.

Try saying this outloud: "My place? -- Oh, its Lakefront Lodge in Lakefront Estates". Or "Lake House in Lakefront Estates". ---- I guess I just want MORE in a name. I mean, really...Where is the heart...where is our "big beautiful Log Home's soul in any of these names?

Also... since the street name is 'Shoreline', entrants may want to reconsider names for the DIY dwelling with the word shoreline repeated. Try saying Shoreline Chalet on Shoreline Road three times fast.

Anyone of the choices above could become the final name for the 2008 Blog Cabin Home. It just seems to me that we all have the opportunity to reach deep, think carefully, and then, choose the name that conveys the spirit of this remarkable home. The actual winner/owners may never even refer to their place by its "Blog-Given Name" but voters will always think of it that way.

There are a couple of suggestions that I believe really seem to capture the fundamental nature of this remarkable build. I will not single them out in this post because I fear they will be rebuked by those who find this message not to their liking. This would be unfair to those who suggested those names .... I would never wany any of my comments to reflect upon or cast a shadow on their efforts. And, I want to add my intent was not to offend anyone or the suggestions of anyone. My reason for posting today was because I was leaning towards a couple of names and then realized I needed to rethink the whole naming process. So, if you still like Lakeside This or LakeFront That or Shoreline Anything, or if you submitted them .... that is terrific. Everyone will have the chance to vote in a few weeks and your submission may be in the final 5. To that, I say, Way To Go!

This post only serves as a cautionary tale for anyone who is open to considering what I discovered after reviewing all the choices so far.

BUT, please, go back and read through all the choices again. There are almost 125 already entered for your consideration and comments. My initial favorites have fallen at the wayside as others now seem much more appropriate. Maybe you will find this to be true for you, too.

Posted by: Jenn at May 5, 2008 2:35 PM

Hello Fellow Bloggers

I have thought and read and thought some more

still don't have a name for the log home! You all

have came up with some wonderful names but I just

can't put into words yet what this home would be

to me or who ever wins. I pray who ever wins feels

as strongly as we all do. I keep thinking I would

like something with retire or retirement in it but

describe this fabulous home and welcome friends

and family also. I need more time and I am most

likely wanting to much in the name.

Still dreaming and thinking.

Well, I would call it something as simple as "Haven of Rest" in honor of my grandmother, Enid, who used her "haven of rest" as a retreat for all of the kids they could drive up there.

What I wouldn't give to hear their recollections.

so liked the lighter palet for the bedroom. also liked the green in that selection. as far as the fire pit they all would be cool but liked the round the best but maybe will change to the rectangular, can use larger logs.
as far as a name how about "DIY no.5" thats the lot number. short and sweet. also cont to like chamomile cabin, and southern comfort. i think it should be a name that makes you laugh, and not too ordinary. i agree with jenn.

Thoughts on the name for the new Blog Cabin: How about the "Raising the Bar Cabin"? "Raising" is what brought communities together in the olden days when someone needed to build a home. This cabin will be a great place for family and friends to gather in community. Obviously, the cabin is on Watts Bar, thus the "Bar" part. And DIY has certainly raised the bar above standard for a cabin in this project: its's going to be a beautiful home in a gorgeous setting for the fortunate winner.

Hi …..

Yesterday we took a walk over to see the cabin and today a ride on the water. What neat changes have taken place since our last visit. All the windows are now in and the walls are up to show where all the rooms will be – so you can now see what the foot print really looks like. With the stairs all in now you can get the full view and the view from the second floor into the great room is very nice. The fireplace will be the main focal point that is for sure.

The brick work on the fireplace (inside and out) and areas around the out side really make a statement. The beams on the front deck are really something and it seems like the house just goes on to the outside without stopping. No - it is not dark in the house or on the deck during the day as we were their in the early afternoon.

We have a question about the master suit. In the bathroom what is the room next to the water closet – shower? I ask because if it is a shower it is “small”, really really small. What size bed is the master to have and with all the doors where do you place it.

Today via water we could see that they have started to put up the railings on the porch and were grading part of the lot. We really enjoy watching the cabin grow.

Retired in Tennessee,

Sally

P.S.
Lakefront Estates is really excited about their Open House on May 18th. See you their….

Watson, since you encouraged us to share a story about the name we suggest, here goes:

I lived for a number of years on the south shore of Long Island NY. There is a pretty area there called Brightwaters, where you can frequently see the sun shimmering on the waters of the Great South Bay, especially in the spring and summer months. I would sometimes park in a lot at lunch time and enjoy the calming effect of these "Bright Waters" before returning to work.

Since so many of us would use the cabin as a retreat...please consider "Bright Waters" as a name for our Blog Cabin '08.

Hi Fellow Bloggers.
It's your Michigan connection. I've been gone for a few days and there's just sooo much to catch up on. Now it's paint colors, fire pit shape and "Fantasy Come True" names.
For me, any name would be fine. All of the suggestsions are perfect and would fit "our home"
.
Off the subject, but does anyone know any cures for a strained/pulled knee in your dog, other than surgery? It's been a real painful week for my black lab and we're trying everything shy of surgery.

The "fantasy home" looks absolutely perfect. I'll be anxious to see the top 5 choices. Then it will feel more like a home. Thanks again guys for letting all of us be a part of the "crew"!

p.s. can we add anything to that lemonade? The last 2 weeks have been more than rough.

Posted by: JoVina at May 5, 2008 11:36 PM

Hey Jenn....how about Cabin Crusing on Shoreline Drive at Lakeside Estates hmmm??? LOL

I still like Lakeside Logia on Shoreline Drive...

The paint choice is back, but with a difference, last seen I don't believe it was limiting the palatte to the master bedroom. I still like the Fork in the Road choice, the colors are just beautiful. At some point everyone should check out Sherwin Williams additional info on each choice. Where is the firepit going? On the circular designed patio? or somewhere closer to the shoreline? How big will it be? Someone mentioned that the rectangular shape would accomodate larger logs, but seems to me that would depend on the size of the firepit.

Now for some more name suggestions:

Mystic Glen
Cabin in the Mysts
Happy Daze (If you win it)
Happy Days
Island View
Hogwart's Retreat (It must be magic.)
Fairy Tales (They can come true)
Hocus Pocus
Fireside Retreat

That's all folks!

When I win it I'll let you all call it anything you want as long as the deed is in my name and I'll only charge $20 apiece to look at it and $50 to actually touch it.(I will have to get money to pay the taxes somehow.) How about Ahmed's Masterpiece.

Watts in a name?
Perhaps "Lakewood Lodge"

"Firefly Landing" :@)
"Lighting Bug Landing"
"Firefly Cove Resort"

Hi: this is my second time to put down my thoughts on the Blog Cabin. I have voted almost everyday. It feels good that most of my votes were echoed by others. This Blog Cabin is the best ever.

Someone in this blog mentioned the front porch and how high it is. What are the plans for access? Whatever you decide to do, please remember that it will dramatically affect the whole view of the cabin. I will be looking for your solution.

There have been many fantastic names recommended for this cabin. All seem to be well thought out and could easily be chosen. While I was strolling through the names, I wrote down the ones that "jumped" out at me. My favorite is:

BAR NONE (just a little play on Watts Bar)or
WATTS BAR NONE

I like it because it could become a local moniker that people will be talking about for years to come. It is catchy, would make a good diy television intro when you start putting it on TV, and is easily distinquished from the Rocky Top Retreat. These are my thoughts and I hope to write again in this space.

I plan to continue voting and monitoring the Cabin Cam everyday. This year's Cabin Blog is so much better than last year's. I enjoy every minute I put into monitoring the site and reading the blog.

Thanks,
Lynn

Hi all! I just wanted those of you who have the name Cumberland in it, that we are not in the Cumberland county. We are actually in Rhea county. Crossville is in Cumberland county, but Crossville is actually about 45 minutes from here.
I do have another name to add--
SPRING CITY SERENITY

Posted by: Helen Miko at May 6, 2008 9:55 AM

More names from me for the cabin:

And considering Jenn's idea of thinking about the name & meaning of the cabin, subdivision and road names. I think these names could fit into the estates existing names which are Pinhook Rd, lake harbour, waterfront way, and I couldn't read the last one..on the link to the Lakefront Estates subdivision map.

In my choices for naming the cabin (another post earlier) if "Lodge" is not wanted then just make it:

DREAM IT'S YOURS (DIY) for all the bloggers & crew involved who made it possible.

or

Dream It's Yours II (for DIY cabin #2)

Posted by: Towny at May 6, 2008 11:29 AM

Some of you are really good at coming up with interesting names. Personally the only thing I want to call it is "MINE" :-)
Why do we only have three (very ordinary) choices on the fire pit. Couldn't you find any pictures of an oval pit or hexagonal or different? Is it because we didn't pick the unusual paver pattern so you thought we just wanted ordinary choices? Bloggers better get voting on the good colors or the blah pastels will win. Could have had a better selection of pastels too. grump, grump, mumble, grump. LLL

My suggestion for a name:
Waters'Edge Abode

Posted by: EJ at May 6, 2008 12:35 PM

I'm not really into naming houses, however, my kids don't follow my line on this at all so their choices are: -

Whip-poor-will cabin
Great blue heron retreat
Turtle bay house

Our family like birds and birding and these birds are especially significant on Watts Bar. The whip-poor-will is under increasing threat and is listed as a 'Bird of Conservation Concern'. This lake is one of their remaining havens in this region. Also who can forget their haunting call in the still evening air. It evokes peace and tranquility. The lake also has one of the largest concentrations of Great Blue Herons in the country. This is significant as in the 1960's and 70's they almost disappeared from the region. Turtle bay is because they think there have to be turtles in the lake and that they would love to sun themselves on the bank in front of the cabin.

Okay guys, this is to everyone with style, creativity, boldness....Let's not let "seems like home, yada, yada" boring paint scheme win. Everyone voting on the other palettes needs to concentrate on one of those and we can defeat the "homely" people out there!

I've been voting for "fork in the road" but its not doing well, so I'll change to one of the others. How about "around the world?" Lets just concentrate on that one and defeat the evil "homely" people!!

Thanks

RE: Luci --Your Post about your Black Lab...

Ooops....Sorry --- First off have to say: Ahmed -this is a fact post.

You probably have already had your Black Lab to the Vet and know it is a knee injury/leg sprain.... But.. you might also want to check the pads on her (his) feet. Not the Vet --- your black lab (wink).

Sometimes a dog will limp or 'favor a leg' and the cause behind the initial 'injury-like-gait' is actually the result of a thorn or cut or ingrown nail into the pad. Sometimes, depending upon the color of the pad, just wetting it well and looking at it with a magnifying glass will result in an 'off-color' (lighter or darker) area and that is where the thorn or cut may be located. An ingrown nail or injury to the nail is usually pretty easy to see, without wetting the pad.

Just a thought. Additionally, if you have an opportunity to do a search, you may come up with Reflexology (touch therepy) informtion for pets that may calm your Lab while the injury heals.

A name for the cabin - A piece of paradise is difficult to name, to say the least. I think I would call the cabin Sonnet - it is as perfectly constructed as a well done sonnet, it has rhythm, grace, beauty, and is a haven.
As for the firepit - although I like the round shape aesthetically, I voted for the square practically as I was thinking about pushing a lawn mower in summer. I think it is easier to mow a square than a circle.

Posted by: Pat at May 6, 2008 5:36 PM

I'd call it: "A 'Lil Peace of Heaven" Yes, I meant to spell peace, not piece.... The mountains of Tennessee are truely peaceful.

Posted by: Jim G at May 6, 2008 5:47 PM

I like 'Watts-Bar-none" and "Whip-poor-will cabin". They both work well and are easy to say. No long names please as they simply don't work.

Posted by: SusanD at May 6, 2008 6:01 PM

The 1st name to come to mind was "SERENITY" because it seems relaxing and peaceful. To live in that kind of space would mean peace of mind and focus of heart and family.

Blog Cabin Name ~Lake-N-Logs Hideaway~

Posted by: Debbie at May 6, 2008 7:27 PM

Hi Fellow Bloggers,
It's Michigan again. All of the names posted thus far are great, but I'm partial to DIY Lodge or FIrefly Resort. I also LOVE the stone work at the base of our "fantasy" home. I can't wait to see the landscaping wonders that will soon start.

A. Muse - thank you so very much for your response in regards to our Jacob. We did take him to our vet and were told that it's the ligament in his knee. My husband and I have rescued at least 7 "fur-family" members. Jacob was going to be used for research and we saved him when he was 8 weeks old. I'm going to research Reflexology so that I can help him as much as possible.

Watson and Ahmed - thanks again for giving me a little bit of heaven away from the real world.

Hi, Fellow Bloggers!

I have a few names to offer for your consideration for the Blog "Cabin".

My suggestions are:

Sylvan Nirvana (means "wooded ideal condition of rest, harmony, stability, or joy")

Inglenook Manor/Lodge (means "fireside cabin/house")

Xanadu Shore or Retreat (Xanadu means "an idyllic, beautiful place")

Heaven's Reverie

Celestial Chalet

Those are some of my suggestions.

To Carrie Miracle, who suggested "Lure Lodge" . . . It's a great name - and did you know it's the name of the KY state park lodge at Lake Cumberland, by Jamestown, KY? I used to live there and we'd have dinner many times at the Lure Lodge restaurant. Great food, if you're ever in the area!

Posted by: Cyndy S. at May 6, 2008 8:30 PM

HEY! I take offense at being called 'homely' just because I like the pastels! :P I happen to think they are very refreshing colors that would brighten any home! We don't all have the same taste and I respect that. But don't call me homely because of my paint choices! That's certainly NOT the reason I'm homely! LOL

The cabin is sure looking awesome! And the names you all are coming up with are great. I think the guys are gonna have a tough time just choosing 5. I'll try to come up with a few more besides the only one my brain could conjur up which was Dreams End Manor. I keep wanting to do some sort of play on words like...Iwannawin Inn! LOL

Also, I sure would like to thank those of you who live close and keep us posted! I love the eye witness accounts. Thank you sooooo much!

Hello all,

Here are a few names that floated to the top of my brain tonight...after looking at the names some of you have submitted--it will be tough choosing a set of five to vote on. Most all of those submitted are great!

1. Sand Pebble

2. Island View

3. Morning Mist

4. Serenity Shore

5. Rustic Retreat

6. Morning Coffee

7. Blogged Cabin

8. Lakeshore Serenity

9. Serenity by the lake

10. Waves

The Big Beautiful Log Home is looking so nice ! I absolutely love all the exposed wood inside and under the roof over the deck. I am guessing that the railing is already pre-stained? I wonder if the rest of the cabin will be that dark too?

For those so fortunate to attend the open house on the 18th , could someone Please ask what type of wood this wonderful home is made of?

I am "really" wondering about that first step off the front porch ? I mean it looks exciting and all but probably a good thing rockers didn't win I suppose ! It would bring a whole new meaning to the term rock and roll.
You know, For some odd reason I have this overwhelming desire to grab my carabiners , ropes and climbing harness??? hmmm... Go figure !

Looks like the earth moving has begun ! So, we of course will be excited for " Ahmed " to make his Grand creative statement to the world. And Oh, that wheelbarrel does brings back some haunting , back aching memories. Especially looking at that huge mound of dirt. Ahhhhh

Paint? I am not picky. Whatever the final choice I have every confidence in Ahmed ,Chris and Simon. You guys are my new heros. Awesome Work!

Firepit? I hope the firepit might be something created by the crew , as opposed to a prefabricated item. The absolute quality of your guys work means far more to me than the shape.

Names? There are a lot of them ! "WOW" and a lot of good thought into is going into this effort. I am really surprised at how many blog entries there are already for this particular event.

I am curious as to who will be providing the music for the Open House? Given it is on May 18th The Day Mount St. Helens blew , I am supposing it will be a blast.

Also, I agree with the rectangular fire pit. I've had both, & the rectangular is much more user friendly.

There have been some great suggestions for names and I do have a few favorites that have been mentioned. Take Care and "keepemcomin."

Whyyyyyyy!!!! Would anyone want to put those blah greys and outright whites on the walls of the master bedroom in this beautiful cabin? Come on folks, there are only 2 walls for color, the other two are logs! Every wall has a door in it, how big is the room?? I really like the Fork in the Road colors, please let's not choke in the home streach by opting for the (are you really as old as grandma now??) ghostly colors seen in so many homes. This home is going to be so rich in detail, don't wimp out on the colors!

OK, so (deep breath) now that I've gotten that off my chest I'll move on the some more name suggestions! LOL

WELL COME HOME

Hi Patty,

( Ahmed ~ this blog is not about the Blog Cabin, so you can skip reading it if you prefer ~ We know you're busy !! )heheh.

This is a long reply, Patty, but I hope it helps with your pet !

Sorry to hear your Labrador has an injury. Labs have such high pain thresholds and when you see them limping, you know they have really hurt themselves.

Okay ~ I'm guessing that your lab is holding up one of his hind legs and " standing on the other three legs". I'm also surmising that this is a young dog, less than 2 years old ?

Was this injury evident after a long walk, running after a ball many times, or running / swimming at the beach ?

Having worked with labrador pups for many years in the Guide Dogs for the Blind program, and having had up to five pups at any one time, I suggest you try the following supplements, ( please don't give your lab "human" painkillers like aspirin, Ibuprofen, etc, as there is a risk of liver damage.)

Supplements with no side effects, and that do work well:

Glucosamine

Chondriatin

Shark Cartilage tablets

All available at health Food stores, Walmart, Sam's Club, etc. Look for the best prices !

You can give all three supplements, ( cover the tablets with a dab of peanut butter to get your dog to eat them ! )

I know it's almost impossible to get a labrador to
rest and take it easy, but I would limit long walks for two weeks, and no ball or stick throwing, tug-O-war games or anything that will stress the leg.

Depending on your breeder, your labrador could indeed have a genetic predisposition to osteo chondritis dessicans. ( simply put, it is the hock joint ~ the equivalent of a human knee joint.
The bones in the hock start to crumble and the little granules inside the hock joint rub together and create friction and intense pain for your pet.)

Your veterinary practitioner may suggest a visit to an orthopedic veterinary specialist, and surgery to open the hock, scrape off the crumbling bone and then you have to keep your dog immobilised ( very hard with active labs!) for approximately six weeks. The surgery is very expensive, approximately $3,000 . )

Do have faith in the supplements I mentioned above, they really DO work.Your dog will not need surgery.
Administer the tablets 3 times a day for two weeks and you will see! You can always keep your Lab on a preventative dose of tablets once a day when he is no longer showing signs of pain.

Give him a big ol' hug and a kiss on the nose from us !!

Watson & Ahmed: Great job guys, you're the best but this blog is mainly to catch up with friends so enjoy your time with your families and don't forget Mother's day next Sunday. We understand how busy you are but Mom's & families come first!

I posted on another previous blog but it hasn't shown up (we understand how busy these guys are) so I figured I'd try to catch up here:

Carrie Miracle: I really hope your Hubby takes you to the opening for Mother's day, you'll have a blast, I'm sure. You'll get to meet Watson, Ahmed, the twins & crew plus Helen, Sally, and Keight, lucky you. If you win this beautiful log home you could call it "Miracle Manor" or maybe one of you will win a prize while there, please let us know if you do (and sneak one of Helen's brownies to mail me, hee, hee). If your Hubby promises to take you then tell him (if we win) we''ll lend you our horses to go on a trailride with Tisser so you can show her the area. Since I can't ride anymore I'm sure you'll have fun for me and tell your Hubby he will only be sore for a few days (ha, ha).

Susan (from Ohio): tell your Hubby not to feel abandoned, there are many mates suffering from us having BC~OCD, it also exlains why you won't get a job until after the winner is announced (also, it will start up again when Log Home III begins), at least we're hoping there will be another one.

Helen, Keight, & Sally: hopefully you'll win a gift at the opening and be sure to look out for Carrie, everyone's hoping she gets there to join you. We'll be awaiting all the details, have fun and maybe suggest they put all the bloggers names in a bowl to win some prizes too, that would be fun for all of us.

BlognBob: I wish there was some way to pack you & your little fammily up so you could go to the opening too - Geoduck and all! You deserve to be there too.

NoelB - I enjoyed reading about your camping trip, sounds like you had lots of fun. I camped all the time while my son was growing up and now we'll be going with the Grandkids, oh, what memories we'll have forever.

Clive: your whip-poor-wills remind me of many a night tenting when I was younger, you sure brought those wonderful dreams back just thinking of the sound I loved and others got annoyed by.

Towny: everyone's names are under their posts so don't worry and stay safe with all the tornadoes and bad weather Arkansas is having. We're praying for everyone experiencing this weather.

Jenn: your ideas made sense, thanks, I'd also like to add that there are so many log homes in TN with similar names so we need to make sure we come up with a really special name so this home won't be named like any others. I posted my suggestions earlier and enjoy all the different names everyone has.

Carrie, oops, almost forgot, glad you liked the name we entered (Dream It's Yours - DIY) and I was thinking about your idea of a back porch slide and thought it would be great for me - I could slide down to the lake but I haven't figured out how to get back up if there's no ramp (maybe a pulley rope)ha, ha.

Good Luck & Great Health to ALL !!

Bill at May 6, 2008 1:14 PM "this is to everyone with style, creativity, boldness"
Sorry to tell you, I am not with you and I do have style, creativity, & boldness.... I like my bedroom to be restful...in wall color... I accent with rich bold colors.... & that way I can change it by the season from cool to warm or from bright to dark.... I use color to lift my spirits..
but I like to change with the season's to reflect what I need my room coloring to do...
But I don't repaint my room every 6 mos....or more
so I would pick a calming, restful color as my backdrop for the master bedroom....

Your opinion on what color you would prefer is YOURs and mine is mine... I have stated why I choose what I did... can you do so without cutting me down for my choice... and tell me your reason for your choice?????

Hi All!

I see lots of creativity in the names so far for the cabin... can't wait to see the final five and vote! I took a point made by poster EJ about the bird population in the area for one of my own ideas. Bob's note about saying the name out loud with the community & road names really helped too. I instantly thought of the first name on the list when I looked at one of the overhead pictures of the lake with the all the colors of the trees... absolutely beautiful!

"Kaleidoscope Cove"
"Beautiful Bay Lodge"
"Heron Hideaway"
"Hammock Haven"
"Stillwater Lodge"
"Hideaway Haven"

Well that's it for now... I'll post more later!

"Shangri-La", It's a mythical place where there is no illness, sadness or anything negative. All Dreams come true there. Everyone there is "swaddled" with Love.
It is Heaven on earth.
I know my Husband would be so happy there, we would be away from all the cares of home. (I have periodic battles with Systemic Lupus & it is so much harder on my Husband Bill, than me. He worries so.)
I see him there, content & worry free, smiling with me as we watch the Sunrises and Sunsets.
I meditate on this cabin. It gives me peace and has helped me get through this last flare-up, MIRACULOUSLY! It was a really bad one, Hospital, and physical therapy 4x a week, but I am getting better quickly and I will soon be better than new!
I see my Sons, Neices & Nephews, Honeymooning there. It would be the "Honeymoon House" which is another name that I think of.
You have all done such wonderful work. You Guys are really "The Dream Team" Oh, oh... another name... "The Dream Scene"!
Okay, I'm done for today.
God Bless you all, Gloria Cagney

BlognBob, if it's any help Barna say they use mostly Southern Yellow Pine for its high-tensile strength and it is the most popular species used in Barna log homes.

They also offer White Pine, Hemlock and Western Red Cedar. The White Pine is lighter in weight and ideal for lateral applications. The Hemlock is available in limited log sizes and profiles. The Western Red Cedar is naturally resistant to disease and insects and is typically used in lateral applications but cannot be hewn.

Looking at the log I would guess they are one or the other of the pine varieties. They don't look red enough for cedar and Hemlock is probably not applicable for the long lengths needed for this cabin.

Golly Gosh! The names for the Big Beautiful Log Home just keepacomin. I'm totally confused at this point, but, since BlognBob had to bring up the Tennessee insect (I learn something new each and every day), the firefly, I just had to add on some of the other Tennessee state designated symbols as suggested names:
Iris Cove, Iris Lodge, Tulip Poplar Lodge, Mockingbird Hill. What about Honeybee Haven? OK this is all BnB's fault! http://www.netstate.com/states/symb/tn_symb.htm This is the link to those symbols and many more. I was amazed at what I found on this link. I didn't learn that in my Tennessee Civics Class in elementary school. Oh, but that was a few !! years ago and things have certainly changed.

Thanks to Misty & Rich for the offer of a horse to ride. Carrie M and I could have a blast. Mine is a Tennessee Walker and they have such a nice gait on the trail. Hilary: I plan to look into those supplements. I have a 10 yrs old 115 lbs lab "pound (shelter rescued) puppy" who shows much the same symptoms. I already give some of those supplements to my 25 yr old TWH mare.
Let's all have a good, hardy laugh today.

Clive-- tell your kids that we do have quite a few Blue Herons here on the lake. I have one pair that comes here between 5 & 6 each night to get their dinner off the shore in my backyard. I expect that I will see their young with them soon when they are able to fly. Tell your kids that we also have a nest of hawks 2 yards over from us too. It was really funny last year when the young hawks were learning to hunt on their own--one of them dove down and picked up a plastic toys from the yard next door. It wasn't until he tried to eat it that he realized it wasn't food. We also have lots of whippoorwills here. I have a wooded area next to our land, and I hear them loud and clear at night. (I also hear the owls & see the bats flying around eating the bugs too.) As for the turtles-- Matt has to be very careful not to mow over them when he is mowing the lawn down neat the lake. Katie gets the marker and writes 'Miko' in the bottoms to see if any come back. So far, we've had none that we saw before.

John- yes, there are lots of goslings here. When I got up this morning, there were 3 pairs of geese in the yard, and each one had 5 or 6 goslings with them. They grow so fast-- just last weeks they were just little balls of fluff-- this week, they are much larger.

And I forgot who asked-- but the road they probably couldn't read on the map was Wolf Creek Road. I could be wrong, but I believe that this section of Spring City is called Wolf Creek. Or, if the map went further down Pin Hook Road, it splits and there is a road called Hidden Lane.

Barbara-- I want to thank you for what you said about how nasty some people are just because you like pastels, instead of earth tones. I have actually been quite surprised how mean some people have been about that. Personally, I am with you on the pastels. My view on it is we are at a lake with WATER in it-- blue is not a stretch for that. But, whatever anyone wants is fine with me-- after all-- that would be the easiest thing to change if they didn't like the color on the walls.

Thank You Misty and Rich for your kind words. Actually I hope Xihns Restaurant will bring some Geoduck for the Open House buffet. That would be fun and perhaps something new for the country folk to try.
It would be so nice if the whole gang could be there on the 18th. That would be a lot of fun! It would be nice to try your brownies too Helen. Maybe some rhubarb pie. (With or without strawberries is fine either way) To go fishin with Clive. Or kayaking with Ahmed.

MY DIY BROTHERS,
I believe you would be doing yourselves a grave injustice not to invite everyone to add a pot luck to this events buffet on the 18th.
With all the great cooks and chefs heading your way. I know I wouldn't turn down them home made eatins. Perhaps you should have a contest for best three recipes...Hey Guys, That is what I would do ! Never turn down home cookin. ALSO "PLEASE",
We Hope you will include a Vlog and or photos of the Open House event for the site , as some of us may not be fortunate enough to attend or to afford DIY on their tv yet. And the site may be all we have to go on.

I liked your thought about the Blue Heron Clive ! Perhaps "Blue Heron Inn" and if perhaps there were to be any murals for the Master Bath, or stained glass, It might be appropriate for a Blue Heron in the picture.

Ahmed-
I forgot to answer you on how we keep the deer & rabbits out of our gardens. There is something called Deer Off that can be purchased in Lowe's, or Pennine Farm Supply. You just spray it on the plants, and it's supposed to keep the critters away for 2 months. (I found this out the hard way, as rabbits ate 4 of my tomato plants before I bought the deer off.) The only drawback, is that you cannot use it within 2 weeks of harvest. But, by that point, I will have a fence up around my garden (or, as Katie calls it -- our salad bowl). Most people around here have fencing around the garden. I'll let you know how it all works out, as this is my 1st year planting here.

Misty and Rich
Thanks for the support of encouraging us to get there for open house! I really want to go, I think he does too! He knows how interested I am in this diy project. And trust me, that lake, is calling his name just like the whippoorwills call us in the sweet summer nights. I'm not sure if he's decided or if he's making me sweat through it till Mother's day! I told him that was all I wanted though! I would look so forward to just being there onsite. Meeting everyone, But the truth is: I love this diy blog cabin and it's location. I would really just love to be there working on it and deciding what goes where, what color here, Solve this problem, change this, does this go with that, can anyone now or in the future reach this thing, use that with normal or physical problems. I'm a dreamer I guess. But I think my favorite thing would be to just sit on those fantastic porches. Or just fish off the bank. Read a book in the quiet night on the porch after the kids go to bed. I think I would be outside as much as inside. They had better include a maid for me if I do. Sorry Ahmed I'm not much of a gardner, Maybe that's because I don't know alot about soil and fertilizers. But I do appreciate and love every growing thing. They are so beautiful. The truth is I could learn and probably would if I had a good start at it. I just would so love to have a home like this of my own. Whether I won or didn't, It's just my dream home & location. We live close to a lake now but to actually live on it. Oh it would be a dream come true for my family. I would love to meet and greet with everyone and especially get ahold of some of those famous Helen brownies. My favorite desert in the whole wide world....!
And for them to have a "special" blogger drawing for surprise gift packages, That is a very cool idea. That would be exciting to win something even if it was something small like a piece of artwork they use in the cabin. Or a towel set like in the master bedroom. Misty you are giving me the big head with suggesting the home be called Miracle Manor for me boy wouldn't I feel like a queen there. (loL) You might want to throw me off the throne when you come for your visit if I win. And yeah I think we could rig up a pulley system for me or you if I win. Cause they would have to fish me out of the lake when I sink to the bottom. Where I can't swim. (lol) Trust me that wouldn't stop me from getting in I would wear a life jacket. Especially on a really hot day! I never learned to swim, Don't like the water over my head, and you never know who's up above you. I had mean cousins, You know what they thought was fun, Dunk the little cousins. (he heee Lol :).
Riding horses, My daughter would love you for life. She has always wanted a horse! My hubby sore, you mean me, I haven't done that in years and that is something I've only done a few times on trail ride N stops. I love petting them and seeing them I would definitely take that ride with Tisser. But I would probably have to borrow the tub and powershower for us riders. I would be so sore, I probably couldn't ride the swing afterward. (LOL) :}

Yes I know Lure lodge is @ Lake cumberland state park. The name (~~Lure Lodge~~)could still be used for this blog cabin, Don't you think? Because look at how the blog cabin is luring us all in.....one blog one commerial at a time.... And yes we know Jamestown very well. We live nearby there. Our family loves Wolf creek Damn, Kendall camp ground. We take the bikes and tricycle and make the rounds at the campground and play on the playgrounds there. And have ate and hung out at Lake Cumberland State Park as well. Awesome little town. My hubby and I were there on Monday (so what a neat surprise! When I found your comment to me on the subject) I don't know how far away from home you are. But, They were starting to dig up on the damn for the repair work on the damn leak with a big digging tractor. And they have redone the dock area across the damn bridge at WCD added a visitors center & we just love the trout hatchery, & fishing stream area we have been going there for years. Especailly in the fall time. Just beautiful.

Blognbob:
That's cool I didn't know the firefly was the state bug for Tn and Don't worry! We know you wouldn't go there with the blogs. That guy behind the tree was just resting against the tree, we all know it! looks can be deceiving..

AS for the other BOB: may 5, well, shame on you! You should be sorry, for that comment. I get the humor you found in him standing there, but suggesting the name,GROSS! Well I guess you just have a dirty mind, You had better wipe it clean, please! your mind, that's all. Who would want to live in a house called that! That ain't funny unless you have an outhouse to live in! (hee hee LOL)!
p.s we try to play nice around these blogs.... come n blog nice next time ok...

Another name idea: Rainbow's End

This cabin is truly the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for the winner!

I'm anxious to see what is in store for the front porch.

As fast as things are going on the cabin, I'm really surprised it will probably be August before we can vote or the programs will be aired. Do you all realize how hard this is for us? LOL

Someone who is going to the Open House...could you takes lots of pictures and put them on Photobucket with a link so we can see them???? That would be so cool! :)

HELEN MIKO:

I think that I am the only one to have used Cumberland in my name suggestions (at least as of the time of your blog). I just want to clarify that my choice of using "Cumberland" has nothing whatsoever to do with the county. I know that it is in Rhea County. Geographically, the Big Beautiful Log Home is located on the Cumberland Plateau just south of the end of the Cumberland Range. The area is also know as the Tennessee Valley (though often referred to as the TVA- this being a misnomer, because TVA is actually an agency). I originally wanted to give it a name with "Smokies" in it, but when I researched it, I discovered that while it is very near the Smoky Mountains, the BBLH is not really in the Smokies.

I hope this explains my line of thinking. By the way, thank you for all of your wonderful insider information about the BBLH. If gas wasn't so expensive and my schedule so packed, we would drive up to see it ourselves. I also live near the TN River, but in Alabama.

Ahmed....the ground is so close to the porch on the left side of the house, would it be possible to put some steps over there to get down to the lake? It seems like it would be an easy thing to do and would make access to the back patio from the kitchen much more convenient!!

Hey The Blog cabin Looking Good!
Oh I See The dumper Being Dumped Good Was looking Bad.. Mybe Keep it out of veiw?

"Serenity" or "Serenity Cabin" get my vote.

I also have a question now that I am seeing the pictures including the driveway. Will the drive be paved or gravel?

Since I have never had the joy of living somewhere that is not almost totally flat I have many concerns about the driveway. Does that area of Tennessee ever get much snow/ice? How does one drive (or slide ;-) down a steep driveway with ice or snow and not crash into the house? How does one get up a steep driveway with ice or snow without a 4-wheel drive vehicle?

Please excuse my ignorance, Florida native here...

Thanks for your patience, Candy

An interesting cabin-cam shot today. So, railings on the front of the front porch. Looks like one or two sets of steps up the side onto the front porch. Nice idea Ahmed and the twins. And it stops me from roller blading straight out of the front door and down the steps to the front drive. No chance of an appearance on 'Jackass' with that design. LOL.

Ok, I do not understand how some people can write pages of unrelated blog and I sent two words, to answer the question of this thread,, I sent it four times,, still not posted in three days..
Is there a membership requirement to post here?? I am really confused.. must we register somewhere on this site that I have missed? Could somebody (Ahmed?) please help me with this? Thank you in advance..

Last time for this blog: I like clean and simple things,, my SUGGESTION for a name,is "THE LODGE",, straight and to the point.. a gathering place in the woods to retreat and relax, get away from it all,, the description of a lodge,,,

WOW, bloggers, my head is spinning from all the wonderful names you have come up with for our cabin! This is a really creative bunch!

I know it is the motto of West Virginia, not Tennessee, but how about "Almost Heaven?" If I was fortunate enough to move there, only Heaven could be the next move I would care to take.

I already put in my two cents worth about the firepit (rectangular) but as far as the colors are concerned, each group of colors is exactly that...a group. I think there are worthwhile choices in each, which makes it hard to choose. Will the winner have any additional input as to which colors in each group would/could be used?

Have fun, folks - we're in the home stretch on this project.

Ahmed or Watson
Hi guys, I'm curious as always, I can see what looks like a platform or alot of lumber laying to the left side of the house in the back yard. Mostly: I'm really really want a know, if it is a dock being built there? If not: what is it for ?

I have a couple more suggestions for the name of the BBLH.

Cumberland Serenity

Cumberland Cove

Posted by: Earalav at May 7, 2008 5:06 PM

"La Bella Vita"
a beautiful life....

that would pretty much say it all

Posted by: Vickie at May 7, 2008 5:11 PM

How about "Sweet Serentiy"?

Posted by: Jackie at May 7, 2008 5:22 PM

Ravenseye
Water Logged
Nevaeh (heaven backwards)

but the name I would like to call the log cabin....
HOME!!!

Posted by: Vickie at May 7, 2008 5:29 PM

I'm not sure how I got the name "A. Muse" but maybe it's because there are other people named "Pat" and variations thereof.
I love many of the names as well as my own offering - Sonnet.
I also like just simply Camp. When I was young, we would go to my grandmother's camp on Sabattus Pond in Maine. I'd swing on the front rocking sofa (the kind on metal slides) - do you know what I mean? The old style sofa popular from the 1950s? There were always tons of musty smelling three-D comic books, boxes of Ritz Crackers, and a beach store right down the road that sold delicious ice cream. For me, "Let's go to Camp" has many wonderful memories of childhood.
(My grandmother's camp had a red hand pump for water in the kitchen sink - do you suppose? Naw, I guess not. Still, it would be romantic to have a working well outside with an old-fashioned hand pump - painted red, of course.
I love many of your ideas!

Question: Is the firepit log or gas fuelled?

I went with rectangle as it fits log shapes better and is in keeping with the rectangular shape of the plot. Fairly geometric reasons on offer today.

lin:

They did post your suggestion. See the entry on May 5, 2008 at 4:47pm. You have to read through the blogs to find your entries. That can be hard. I write down where I left off each time. I also write down the time and date of my posts. It often takes several hours before our posts appear. I believe that Watson and Ahmed approve them in large batches when they get a chance to read through them.

CLIVE:

I am glad to have it confirmed that there really are railings on the front of the front porch. At first I thought it was my imagination. It certainly isn't part of the 3-D rendition. I guess they are giving us a hint at what they are going to do.

Candy in Miami:

Yes, Candy, there is some snow and ice in Tennessee, though not a lot. I am from the northern edge of Indiana and have lived in North Dakota, so I have seen lots of that stuff, but in the north we have the sense to not build steep driveways because you cannot get up and down them very well at all in icy conditions. I now live in northern Alabama where, when it gets icy (once or twice a year), everything just shuts down. One solution is to put salt on your driveway, but I think that if I lived in this cabin, I would just build a fire and curl up with a good book until the ice melted. By the way, a 4x4 is not really helpful in ice. You just have four wheels slipping.

Posted by: Earalav at May 7, 2008 6:43 PM

You people have such sharp eyes. I don't see the steps Clive saw. I have to bounce back to the picture to see half the stuff everyone else sees, then I have to reread the blogs to figure out where I was cause I don't want to miss someones comments. I don't think "Fork" carried over all its votes from before. How could it get that far behind?
Guess we have to use your rhubarb for pie. My rhubarb is about three inches high today. Not bad for a being under a foot of snow a week and a half ago.
Was out raking and forgot the gloves for the first half hour. Left hand blistered and popped before I remembered. So I got out the rider and did some yard vacuuming instead. Guess what old lady can barely move today? ;-) Today I would rather win the Yard Crasher than the Bloggin' Home. (But in August I'll feel differently. lol) Everyone stay healthy and wear your hat in the garden. LLL

Clive,
I was so obsessed with trying to figure out watt's up in the left back yard that, I didn't even see the entrance porch rails. I think you are right about the front porch the railing goes all away across it so I think they will be "Twin" stairs off the front also. That will be nice. I can't wait to see which way they go and how they land at the ground! As for you rolling out of the house with the rollerblades & landing on ja, I hope it's your feet instead! jk
