Design Star

Episode 3: There's Always a Catch...

Posted by – August 6, 2006 8:55 PM

Well, now we are on Episode 3. I think the designers were starting to get a bit too comfortable with the way things worked, so it was time to mix it up a bit.

Instead of going to meet them, they came to the location first. When they saw the eight "rooms," they assumed they would get a chance to do individual dream rooms. Not so fast.

I am really beginning to enjoy those paint cans. On the other hand, the designers seem deathly afraid of them! (I suppose that may be what makes me like the cans so much). The cans always signify a twist, and when the designers see them now, their eyes grow wide. This week's paint cans were especially devilish, since no one could have anticipated having to design a room from items purchased at automotive, beauty, camping or pet stores. How do you practice for a thing like that?

The time was shorter on this one as well, although since there was no discussion between teammates to slow things down, I think everyone was able to manage their time better. Everyone finished on time, although from some of the results, I'm not sure that all the time in the world would have helped!

At this point in the competition, it's important for the judges to see individual talent, and I think this challenge did an excellent job of showcasing the individuals.

Two weeks in a row, we've had tears in the Elimination Studio. I'm not sure anyone realized just how emotional this process was going to be, but they certainly understand it now. It's amazing even to me. I truly feel the electricity in the air when I tell them "Your show has been cancelled." They exit the studio, and when those giant doors clang shut, it shakes everyone.

The time is just flying by. It seems like only yesterday I was welcoming 10 designers to the competition. Now, suddenly, we are down to the last six and soon, quite soon, only two will remain. Then the challenge is yours, America. You will decide which of those two deserves to be the next HGTV Design Star. It's quite a responsibility. I hope you are watching closely!

Ilove this show, glad yo show it more than once a week as I can't seem to remember sunday nights. David is by far the best!!!!!!!!!!

I am so glad Vanessa is gone, she needs to grow up and realize there are other people around. Feel sorry for her husband, unless he is the same as she is.Good Grief. I hope Alice wins as she seems the most professional of them all.

Have watched the show from the beginning and thoroughly enjoy it. The eliminations thus far are right on target, although I think Vanessa should have gone right after Ramona - her arrogance was astounding, especially considering her lack of talent. Her back-stabbing, and blatant lying should have been unacceptable to all.

Posted by Jeanne – August 28, 2006 2:40 PM

At first I wanted David to lose because he appeared to be a bit arrogant. But he grows on you and I have to admit his work is far superior to the others. He shows real talent and I can visualize him on HGTV with his own show. My suggestion though: your great personality comes through without taking your shirt off. Look a bit more professional.

I absolutely lovvved the twins! They had personality plus! I was heartbroken at the way the judges treated them & the comments they made to them when their shows were cancelled. I would have loved to see the both of them have their own show.

Tym should have been cancelled. The dog leash hanging from the ceiling, was to freaky!

Posted by Marlene – August 25, 2006 1:57 PM

TELL TYM TO STOP WEARING THOSE (I BEAT MY WIFE SHIRTS) AND TELL DAVID TO PUT ON A SHIRT WE DO NOT WANT TO LOOK AT THEIR BODIES,IT'S OLD SCHOOL, BUT TRY AND LOOK LIKE A PROFESSIONAL WE WANT TO LOOK AT THERE DESIGNS. ALICE FROM THE GET GO HAS BEEN MY PICK !

Posted by MELINDA – August 24, 2006 2:25 PM

Just got into the show last week. Fortunately with reruns and DVR, I was all caught this Sunday.
I love this show because the format is very similar to "Project Runway", my fav reality/contest show. Some of these people actually have some talent and professional experience. Design star, project runway and iron chef have format that make for cult followings. I can't wait until next Sunday. Alice will win because she will probably demonstrate more versatility than the 2 artist with a real project next time.

Aufweidesein!

Episode 4 really did weed them out. I was sorry to see that both twins have been eliminated because together I think that they would be great potential in the Decorating/Design world. I can see how Temple is really struglling to win, she has good designs, but the pressure is getting to her and this will be tough to handle when she does get into the real world. David has a lot of it right on target...planning, direction, etc... Can hardly wait for Episode 5...

Posted by Ann/Texas – August 18, 2006 6:17 PM

Temple-Donna feud getting a little old!In episode#4 she was a very poor leader.Temple please get eliminated!!!! Temple- stop the tears we know the're fake.
Alice- your great!Your camping store room was awesome!
David!-Oh my gosh your first in line to win this thing!Keep it up.
Twins-well they were good, but I feel they would be better at designing together. David and Alice Will be the final Contestants P.S. David's room in episode#3 was awesome! What creativity! Love this show! I'm addicted.

I'm amazed that almost none of these contestants seem to realize that the 'Design Star' will not be working solo; but will be heading a team not necessarily of her/his choosing. I think the challenges are inspired!

Posted by Susan O'Connor – August 18, 2006 12:45 AM

I guess I am partial to Alice; not only because that is my name, but also, I read her bio & I
really think she is quite good.

I am pulling for her to win it all. Partly also, she has been sort of quiet even though she
had some things to say too.

I am glad Donna is gone. She got on my nerves.
I am glad, even though everything was not carried through completely, that Temple was picked for a leader & that she will be good someday.

As others have said, I miss the twins. Some of their work was good, & some was not.

I did like Vanessa, & in a way, hated to see her go.

Posted by Alice Craig – August 16, 2006 9:08 PM

What do the judges see/hear? I thought Alice's comment about the gaps in the flooring were pretty important. No one else seemed to pick up on that - even the judges! Like Alice said, "What if someone spilled milk on that floor?"

Posted by Paula – August 15, 2006 7:59 PM

I can't belive vanessa got kicked off. she was my favorite designer.... so now alice is.... later

Posted by Alecia – August 15, 2006 5:07 PM

Temple should have been the second person to leave!!! She is not a good designer and can't get along with anyone. Temple needs to go to college and take some interior designing classes. I'm insulted by her because my town is named after her! TEMPLE HAS TO GO!

Posted by Alecia – August 15, 2006 5:05 PM

Great Show, Great Host and Great Judges, I am very tired of seeing Temple's fake tears. She is trying to uses tears on the judges and cute tells of her children. That does not make a good disign show if Temple wins I will never watch that show I will turn my TV to Something else.

I absolutely loved this challenge. This is the type of thing I would do. Bravo!!!!!

I love the show . and watch hgtv at work and home and while on the computer jeje.. \having remodeled 2 homes in a year in a half .; I give credit to the programs; where I'v gotten a lot of great ideas .:)
I am going more towards David.. for his artistic talent and designs ; loved that bedroom and individual room .. Also liked alices green room . . I cant wait till next week to see what challenges they confront/

Posted by Betty S. – August 14, 2006 1:13 AM

Going to that little beauty shop was totally unfair for those two - I would like to see how the judges would have decorated the room with the same limited items available in that Beauty Shop Store - Though I am glad those two are gone - they were not good designers but they didnt have a fair chance on this event

Posted by NANCY – August 14, 2006 1:12 AM

First of all, I want to say that the ONLY television station I watch is HGTV. It is wonderful and very helpful in finding new decorating ideas for both my home and garden.

Now about Design Star. I think this is a really compelling program. The premise behind the show is good and realistic.

Like many of the readers' comments, I am glad that Vanessa is gone. Her arrogance was very irritating. I also dislike Temple's frequent references to being a single monther. I was also a single mother and did not feel the need to play on sympathy (or sex appeal as displayed in her tape) to advance in my career.

I also feel that David is a little too full of himself and his sex appeal. He made several reference to it during his tape, and wearing no shirt in the episodes does not speak to his professionalism. I have yet to see any of the HGTV hosts (even those in the gardening programs) strutting around without shirts.

Temple's and Donna's ongoing quarrel is annoying and detracts from the program.

However, I think that David and Alice will be the two finalists, and I am voting for Alice because she is compassionate, listens to others, and works well with everyone. She has good design ideas and takes the input of others to make them better.

Episode #4 just set them up to fail with the small amount of time to do a kitchen!!Who can do anything in a kitchen in 36 hrs!!I was really disappointed that they had to work as a team again as u don't see each individuals talent-just the lead-(Temple).Episode captured all of their individual talents-NO MORE TEAMS!!

how can you get a chance to be a contestant the next time they do this show???

Posted by bulet – August 13, 2006 7:53 PM

I am glad that vannesa got kicked off but i wish
someone else would have gotten removed besides one of the twins.

I am excited to see who gets kicked off on episode 4. I think it will either be temple and donna or just one of them.

IM ALMOST SURE OF IT

Posted by Makenzie – August 13, 2006 1:37 PM

I love the show and so happy that Vanessa is gone, she was getting on my nerves. I just want to say, that David will win this contest.

Posted by Van – August 13, 2006 1:03 AM

Glad Vanessa is gone. I realized she had little talent when she picked out fabric for the sofa in week 2. I can not believe that she was so proud of her room in week 3. She could really learn from some of the students on designer finals.

Posted by Angela – August 12, 2006 10:56 PM

Hi,
If all you Design Star fans want to know all the dirt about Temple and the other contestants, then go to the message boards. I have learned more information than I cared to know. Temple's family and friends are all out to help you understand why she is such a poor helpless beauty contestant.

Posted by Cindy – August 12, 2006 9:55 PM

this episode was my favorite so far. Vanessa was over cocky as usual and it bit her in the butt.

I really liked David's room BUT im starting to see a constant pattern in his work. I'd like to see a little diversity maybe.

Posted by Samwhiches – August 12, 2006 7:34 PM

I loved David's design. I think this competition is about design before function. Of course wood shavings are not functional, but it made for a great design. David has talent for days! And what is with everyone complaining about him working sans shirt? He is talented and hot! He can wear or not wear whatever he wants.

Posted by Benjamin – August 12, 2006 5:40 PM

Another thing, I swear I saw Joe before a while ago, could it have been a preliminary to this. There were only 3 designers featured if I recall correctly. Defiantly Joe with his moving wall things and possibly Alice and her fabric creations, and Donna? Weird.

Posted by Sue – August 12, 2006 8:52 AM

Favorite.....Alice - she doesn't lack confidence just the "in your face" gene? Her style most closely matches mine, would watch her show.
2nd.....David - definitely talented, got that with each episode. Said himself he uses his looks but backs it up with talent, true. He's so tongue in cheek, that he's likable. Not sure I'd watch if his show style were contemporary. Shirt on.
Joe - wish the show focused more on individual talent, he got screwed. When they first said 2 would go I thought they would bring him back, hey, it's not like it hasn't been done before.
The twins - super nice guys (different personalities, just can't keep names straight) can't say I saw their individual talents. BTW another channel has a design show w/female twins but they don't have the personality of these guys.
Temple - She seams to work well with others, just not Donna, takes 2 to tango. Don't see enough talent to sustain a show.
Donna - ditto, somewhere she said she's fine as long as she's the boss, but doesn't seem to have what it takes to be in charge.
Tym - talented, but would I watch? Some day we will all find out what the leash was. Someone suggested fan pull, I agree.
Vanesa - maybe it's like saying something nice about the awfully departed but she did give the blue room twin the tip about painting diagonally to help with paint coverage.
Ramona - this just wasn't the niche for her.

I used to look forward to new episodes of Desperate Housewives. Now, I'm looking forward to new episodes of Design Star. Since the shows are edited to get our attention, I'm not sure who will win.

Posted by Mary – August 12, 2006 12:32 AM

This has been the first reality show that "hooked" me. I love the challenges and can't wait to see the results. This week the I thought the judges were exceptionally astute. Temon was really floundering with this challenge and I think Vanessa missed the point entirely. Anyone could make a room look like a beauty shop with beauty shop items. Although I'm tired of watching David's pecs and his "cute-ness" he truly turned out a fabulous room this time. He needs to put more faith in his abilities and be less dependent on his looks. He's very talented. The Donna-Temple sparring matches are getting tiresome, but I was glad to see Temple put together a nice room this time despite her lack of training. Donna acts a little too superior and this challenge may have humbled her a little. You are the shining star, Clive. I love the show.

Posted by Sandi – August 12, 2006 12:26 AM

I have design friend who can take a piece of trash and make it a spectacular piece of art. She would put a few of these designers to shame for sure.

I would have liked to see Joseph in the individual contest. I have a feeling he had more talent then we got to see. He got a bad deal having Vanessa on his team.

As a graphic designer, I'm used to the ego trips designers can have. I saw it in Vanessa and knew she wasn't going to last. Others made her look better than she really was.

David has the vision and the talent. He's my frontrunner for the next Design Star.

Good for Temple for showing she has individual talent. She just needs to learn to work well with others. Part of being is a designer is making the client think it was their idea to get your own ideas translated.

Posted by Elizabeth – August 11, 2006 8:43 PM

So, maybe he needs to wear a shirt, occasionally, but he has way more personality than anyone else. More importantly, he CAN design, and design IS art. The pet store room was never intended to be used as a real room, but take his idea and transform it into a real throw rug, and you've got something. Same thing applies with the glass sculptures.

I agree with some of the comments made about Temple, but she also did some great work in her "Classic Auto" room, and who said it wasn't original? She may be putting herself out there as a sexy, single mom, but she's also always right there in the middle of things, getting her hands dirty and working like a dog. Donna, on the other hand, only seems to like shopping.

I also like Alice, but don't think she shows any real originality.

Please, stay away from the kitchens, particularly real ones. In such short periods of time, you can't do much more than clean them.

GREAT SHOW, CAN'T WAIT TO WATCH IT AGAIN.

Posted by M in Alaska – August 11, 2006 7:49 PM

I am sorry to see the twins separated, I would watch a show hosted by them!! Not sorry to see Vanessa go, I liked her at first but changed my mind by the 2nd episode!

Now we need to get rid of Temple who thinks she is really "something" I'm not impressed nor are many other people!

Donna needs to go also. I agree with others, she is a shopper not a designer!

I would NOT watch a show hosted by Temple or Donna!

David is really impressive and of course Clive is GREAT! I love Design to Sell!!

Posted by luv2shop – August 11, 2006 5:08 PM

I'm disappoint to see the twins split up; I was hoping to see Donna get the boot instead. For a designer with more years of experience than Vanessa has, her effort was so... abysmal.

The beauty-supply store could have been exploited more. Don't they carry towels and cotton balls? Turn those into pillows! (Yes, that would require LOTS of cotton balls.) Sew some towels together for a rug or covering for the couch! Maybe even use boas as trim for the pillows or whatnot; be more clever than hot-gluing a boa onto the lamp (where have I seen that idea before?).

I'm rooting for Tym, since he's from my home state, but I wish he would have bought paint. I know he use the dog-food bags for "color" on the walls, but Warhol or not, that just didn't look good. David is good; I'm looking forward to seeing more of what he can do in future episodes. Ditto for Alice.

Temple pulled off a pretty cool design (IMHO), but if she can't curb her Miss Utah/single-mom ego and keep her catty-ness in check, she just won't have what it takes to handle her own show.

Frankly I thought Temon's design (the camping store) was better than Teran's (beauty store). Teran's design was too dark for me. Temon's use of tape on the wall was at least creative for the stuff he had available. But I realize that the judges didn't want to boot both beauty-store contestants off at the same time. Why not boot Donna instead?

Love you, Clive.

The most telling things that confirmed the judges' decision to cancel Vanessa's show were (1) that she was so excited about getting to shop at the beauty supply store, and then (2) when she completed her design, she said "I'm so pleased with my room." The finished room looked like a display IN a beauty supply store--not like a room in a house, which was the object of the design test. I'm guessing that the judges don't see what the viewers see--the process the designers go through to reach the finished product--since until now they had not picked up on the fact that the creativity in rooms Vanessa was connected with was not her own. An additional comment to some of the previous statements that David's design was stunning but impractical. The test on this episode seem to be strictly for visual appeal, because if one were actually designing a room for people to live in, he or she would not have chosen to go to the particular stores available to the designers to buy materials. David's design showed the most creativity with the materials he had to work with. Good job on this one, judges.

Posted by MeB – August 11, 2006 2:00 PM

I actually watched the challenge again last night, and I have to say that though David was the winner (and did a brilliant job) I may, in retrospect, have liked Alice's room more - whoever said that her room had function as well as style was right. David's was a beautiful design, but I would have liked to have seen a little more function to it - like maybe the goldfish bowls could have had value as receptacles, or frames, displaying stuff, as well as sculpture - something like that.
I really would like to see the Twins get a show together, because together, they do beautiful work, from conception to final product (hmmm - what could their show be called...Dynamic Duo Design? One (room) by Two? Dioscuri Design)?
Was SO disappointed by their rooms - great ideas that just didn't materialize. Temple did a good job, but her constantly playing the "single mom with two little boys" card is getting on my nerves (don't get me wrong - it's admirable that she wants to make a better life for them, I'm just tired of her bringing it up constantly). I was also irritated by the fact that this card seems to work on the judges, as evidenced by Vern and Martha's comments. So far, I think David and Alice would be the best - I'm pretty sure I could watch either of their shows. Very glad that Vanessa left - in addition to being arrogant, she's extremely condescending to her fellow designers (which makes me wonder how she behaves towards her clients). Still remember the second challenge, where she talked about how she thought that "Alice learned something," ugh. And of course, her trying to dump all the blame for the plates on Joseph (another room I would've liked to have seen).
Tym's room wasn't bad, but man, was that leash disturbing.

Posted by HGTV-er – August 11, 2006 1:48 PM

As a second year design student I am quite intrigued by the contestants that were picked for this show. Each of them have brought their own pesonality to the table which I feel is just as important as their skills in designing. If you cannot connect with your client that could make or break whether you get the job or not. I realize this is for a television show but at the same time there will be others involved in this production and it would not behoove you to p-off the production crew. Vanessa rubbed me the wrong way. Her overbearing and arrogant way was very unappealing. I feel the "twins" are better suited at working together where they can bounce ideas off each other. Temple and Donna rate right up there together. Neither one has a personality that would shine on a interior design program. As long as they can keep up the pace my picks would be Alice and David. Aside from the shirt thing, David has a great personality, knowledge and a willingness to be flexible. Alice can be a bit timid but she shows (by shopping in a camping store) great strength in using her design talent to meet the needs of a client. I can't wait to see who wins and what style show they will be hosting.
GOOD LUCK to all the contestants!

Posted by Tammy – August 11, 2006 11:41 AM

I am totally turned off by Temple's audition tape where she is lying on the couch covered by a blanket and naked behind a big black star. She was not selling her design abilities. She needs to go. I am SO glad Vanessa is gone too.

Posted by Mary – August 11, 2006 11:01 AM

I watched the show last Sunday and tonight I watched the reruns. It's a great show. The challenges are really challenging and we've seen now how some people have clear talent at not only vision, but being able to pull together something with very little to work with and very little time. Working under that kind of pressure really narrows the field of potential winners. In addition to the design skills, I've been thinking since the beginning about who I would enjoy watching in a regular show and of the ones left:

Donna and Temple are obnoxious and not particularly talented.
The twins are terrific, likeable guys, but I think architecture is where they'd shine more than interior design.
From what we've seen so far, I think , Alice, Tym, and David (I don't share the distress some have mentioned about David's shirt - he's an attractive and personable young man) are the only ones I'd turn on the TV to see actually working as interior designers.

Posted by Emily – August 11, 2006 4:31 AM

This show is fantastic. I never watch reality shows but this one is different and leaves all the weird stuff out.

I think it would be fantastic to show, behind the scenes. Exactly how much to do the judges see. I wish we had more time to hear what the judges decide and how they reach their decision. Do they only get the small glance seen on each show? How about giving the viewing public a little inside information. I am so excited that there will be another Design Star Show for next season.

How long are the judges going to buy into the "I'm a single mother with 2 boys" line? YUCK!!!

Too bad David can't read these comments about wearing a shirt. I believe he will win overall, with Alice a close second. If David showed up at my house to work or go over a design idea wearing no shirt, I would cancel the job immediately.

Posted by Brenda – August 11, 2006 3:06 AM

I never watch reality shows, but I am totally enjoying this! Clive, you are great! On this show and Design to Sell & I adore Lisa La Porta too. These guys are all trying so hard, their efforts and heart are greatly appreciated. I like a different designer each episode. I so agree that Donna has not shown much of her own creativity, but disagree that David should put a shirt on!

Posted by Kathy – August 11, 2006 2:58 AM

I am soooo happy for temple, and i'm not surprised at all that she pulled off a great classic car room. a lot of posters keep saying she's trying to use her title as miss utah and the fact that she's a single mom to win the competition. i only remember her mentioning her title once, when she was introduced in the first episode, and that seems reasonable. what i really remember is donna talking over her and rejecting her ideas in epi 2. i love the way she antiqued the cabinets in that episode. it suited the style of the house and was the only good thing in the room! her room and david's were absolutely the best this week. i'm rooting for both of them. way to go, guys!

Posted by m bernard – August 11, 2006 2:29 AM

I just love this show! I love Clive and Designed to Sell! I would love to see David win this contest. He is hot, sexy, funny, and a great team player. His audition tape and his works on the last 3 episodes definitely shows his personality and talents. While, with the others, their skills and talents did not show in the episodes to match their character description in the audition tapes. I'd like to see Temple and Donna get eliminated b/c even though they have talent, they still need to learn about teamwork and positive communication style to have their own shows...

Juli

p.s. I don't watch much reality eliminations show, but this one has me excited every Sunday nights!

Posted by Juli – August 11, 2006 2:02 AM

I loved this episode. It just keeps getting better and better. The judging is excellent. If you look back at that first episode you'll see Vanessa take all the credit and David and one of the Twins (I can't remeber who worked on that room) looked at her like she was crazy. It was funny at the time but now I see she had no talent and no imagination. It was their work we saw not hers. In the second episode it Vanessas' idea to slash their budget. Bad idea. They needed every penny to pull off the makeover of such a huge room. This last challenge separated the talented from the untalented. You were on your own. You got to see their weaknesses as well as their strengths. This show is excellent. This is the only reality show I was ever hooked on. I love Clive. I think he is and excellent host. I can hardly wait untill next Sunday.

Posted by Michelle Bailey – August 11, 2006 1:33 AM

I think that donna should be removed although im glad that Vanessa already did. i think that Alice probably did the best room on episode 3. I like the bright green that she added. Usually the twins are very good designers, but this episode i think both of their rooms were way different then the rest.

DAVID'S WAS CUTE BUT NOT PRACTICAL(DID'NT HAVE TO BE) PLEASE GET RID OF DONNA I WOULDN'T WATCH A SHOW HOSTED BY HER ALICE HAS PROMISE LOVED.... DESIGN TO SELL. I THINK IT WOULD BE FUN TO DO A SHOW LIKE THAT BUT I WOULDN'T TAKE LOOSING SO SERIOUS

Posted by DIANE – August 10, 2006 11:52 PM

I'm hooked on this channel. Was upset to have missed the second episode until I caught it the following Saturday. I've been in agreement with the judges on every count. In each episode David has impressed me. Surprisingly, Temple is better than I thought she would be. Alice was not an attention grabber but is beginning to make a good impression as a designer. A better test of individual design would have been to have them all shop at the same store. When I think about possibilities for designing with purchases from the beauty store I, personally, am more challenged than from any of the other stores, within the time frame given. It's looking like David will have the winning show. I would like to see his work using colors other than orange and brown. David has been an attention getter, and looks like he will be the attention keeper needed to host a show, however it's not over yet. I don't want to reach a bias toward him until I see the remainder of the shows.

Posted by Fran – August 10, 2006 11:32 PM

I think that the designers who received Beauty were at an unfair advantage as you could tell from the products available in the store. If this show is on for another season and this challenge is utilized again, find a store with equivalent items available to the other 3 used in this season's episode. FYI: I did not care for Vanessa either since she took credit from others and pushed blame onto others that she should have accepted.

Posted by Lynn – August 10, 2006 10:44 PM

I really liked the paint treatment in David's room; other than that, I did not find it a truly useful room. Alice's room was very serene and well-executed. I liked Temple's room a lot; I am tired of the single mom stuff- SO WHAT? Donna did a good job with what she was dealt, considering she had no idea what anything in the store was used for. Tym's room would have benefited from paint and I really liked the coffee table. I thought I would be glad to see Vanessa go, but when it happened, I was surprisingly a little sad for her. I agree that the twins hosting a show together could be a very good move; I was sorry to see them split up, but they must have realized it was going to happen eventually (maybe there was a glimmer of hope that they would be the two left standing).

Just a thought - since the commercials do say "ten professional designers", maybe HGTV would consider a Design Star with non-professionals (like me!) who really love design but have no professional training or working experience, just what we have done at home. Hmmm...

Posted by Tomi – August 10, 2006 10:25 PM

Thank goodness Vanessa is gone! She was high on herself always bringing up what awards she won...please!!

David's room was the best-very creative for the time they had to spend on it.

Donna was a tad bit disappointing. Expected more from her.

Alice was good-she seems to have a difficult time being adventurous with her designs. Simple but nice.

Temple surprisingly had an interesting room. Her audition video was disgusting for a family t.v. show, and especially for a mother of two small children. Obviously she has no faith in herself and is trying to rely on her barbiedoll appearance to get by.

Tym has good ideas-he just needs to work quicker in order to execute them.

I absolutely love the show (& HGTV)! as a matter of fact, i just finished watching the 3rd episode for the 3rd time...i am also glad to see vanessa gone. i enjoyed watching her feel confident up until the end when she was told she was among the worst. the person i'd most like to see win this would be alice. i like her attitude & style. david would be 2nd choice but i could definitely do without him taking his shirt off all the time...i can't wait until sunday!!!

I'm Not happy that Vanessa was kicked off. I just saw the show, on Thursday evening, and am sad. I didn't like the choices made by the judges. I also see several differences I would have done in the rooms - I would have used the auto tape to make plaid instead of incomplete stripes. I think the twins would be great as co-hosts on a show, but this show isn't about getting two but rather about getting one :-/ I'm also disappointed that Joseph left. This household wants Temple off, and maybe Donna. Well, we'll see what happens.

I love the show! I stayed up till 1am. to watch the 2nd show replayed. I agree that all the designers should have been at the same stores. I would have liked to see more time and money spent beforehand. One hour is not enough to buy and plan.I love design to sell.

Without a doubt, this is the best show on HGTV at the moment. Clive is perfect.

I'm glad Ramona is gone, I'm glad Vanessa is gone. I would like to see Temple get the boot; it is obvious she has had no professional training (in decorating anyway).

David is so good it is amazing. Alice seems talented but a bit too shy to host a show. The twins, while adorable men, are not designers, just good team players.

I hope there is a follow-up to this show when it is over because I just love it. Good job HGTV.

I was glad to see Vanessa kicked off. Didn't like her from the beginning. I vary between the others but like David the most. I have liked his work so far but what appeals to me the most is that he is the type I would watch on a designer show. He approached the whole Donna/Temple thing well and he seems to work with others well. I think his personality would carry a show well...a show I would watch. I would watch a show hosted by Alice. Aside from these two, I think I would either not have a lot of interest in some of the designers (Tym, for example...although I do like him), but I would avoid a show hosted by Donna or Temple.

Posted by RD – August 10, 2006 3:18 PM

I also agree David's design was very visually dynamic. As an artist and designer, I really enjoyed his room, but I can't really agree that it was a good interior design. It was art! I believe that to be good interior design FUNCTION is a very important element. The art floor pulled the other elements together, (the duplication of the circles, colors, etc.) but was very impractical. I would have liked at least one judge to mention this point. I would love to create all my spaces based on art only---now that would make everything easier!

I just love the concept of this new and exciting show. However the fueding between Donna and Temple makes me want to shut the TV off! Temple obviously loves to be the center of attention and wants to play the sympathetic role as a single mom and Donna's opinion of designing is shopping. She might be a decorator but certainly not a designer! I personally think Alice and David will make it to the end. Both seem to be team players, have talent and are accepting of constructive critism. Vaness, Temple and Donna think they are ALL THAT. They are so focused on themselves they are blinded to what the show is all about. I knew from the first episode that Vanessa would not succeed. I am glad to see her gone. Clive is an excellent host and I love the show "Designed to Sell". HGTV is my all time favorite show.

Posted by colleen – August 10, 2006 12:27 PM

Whoa! Good To Go David! There are a Couple Choices For The "Top Two!" BTW: I Love HGTV but I have to say they should have a least one show being a kid designer! (I'm am 13 and I have great design skill) maybe they should try airing a Design Star Jr.! (It Might Be A Sucsess!)

David-85% Chance In Being The Design Star!
Alice-80%
Donna-Maybe a 50%
Temple-65%
Teran(I Think)- Without His Twin-45%
Tym-65%

Posted by Dean – August 10, 2006 12:02 PM

I think that David clearly won this week. The shirtless thing is a balance for the Temple boobs and booty thing, in my opinion. It doesn't bother me. I think David will be one of the last two standing, unless he really screws up on something.

Temple's design at least showed she could pull something together, even if it wasn't original, but I don't think she has the knowledge and vision to really design. The twins are great guys, but this week neither one could pull it together. I don't see Teran (I think that is correct)lasting to the end.

Donna is a decorator, not and interior designer. She can shop and spend someone's money, but I am not sure she has what it takes to start a room from scratch and be creative. I don't see her lasting.

Tym has some great ideas, I think, but has trouble getting them done. He needs to work harder on execution, but again, I don't see him making it, I think David will beat him out because of David's confidence.

Alice is nice, and I think she has some design skills, but not a lot of vision or imagination. I visited her website that was posted on the discussion board, and every room shown was pretty much neat and nice, but very much the same. I also don't think she has the strong personality she would need to actually carry a show, but I think she will be one of the last two.

Clive, you are wonderful. I live outside Chicago, and was thrilled when they stared the other Designed to Sell from this area, but the show suffers greatly without you. And while I don't think Lisa LaPorta has ever done a window treatment that didn't look skimpy, I much prefer her overall to the woman on the Chicago version - way too perky! But I'll watch anything you host - even with Ramona!

Posted by Les – August 10, 2006 8:58 AM

Is it design talent or is it personality? Have to admit, I've been paying more attention to Donna than any of the others. Got my daughter & son-in-law hooked on the show (had to watch while visiting them.)
Can hardly wait 'til the next episode. This is the first reality show I've ever followed. The others have been so incredibly stupid or revolting, but this is great fun!

Posted by Connie – August 10, 2006 8:04 AM

The last episode was the first that I've seen--definitely have to catch the next one--I'm hooked!
Clive is great (wasn't sure he'd translate over well from "Designed to Sell" (An top favorite of mine) and now this is my new fav show.
I loved that last assignment and all I could think was: I could do this!!! Wish I were on that show. I guess you really have to have a thick skin to take all the personal criticisms, though, right? David's room was awesome! Donna is trying to be "young" (hey, girl, we can tell how old you are so stop pretending; you are beautiful but don't lower yourself back to where you were 20 years ago!) and I just don't get all the posing that Temple does (Like she's trying out for a movie career?? her body language reeks of "sleeze" and not of a respected professional, although if she IS a single mom, I admire her trying to get a good job to support herself).
Super show--maybe they can go 'grass roots' and bring this idea out to the local Home Depots or Lowes'--would be a hoot!!!!!!!

Posted by Gilda – August 10, 2006 7:02 AM

So glad Vanessa is gone!

Temple is so immature. I'm so tired of her sticking her chest out everytime she thinks someone is looking. She pulls out the "my kids" card in hopes of gaining something with the judges but, she has no idea of how to get along with anyone and needs to be booted.

The twins are separated but not for long. Alice is down to earth, hard worker and a team player despite who's on the team. David has talent but needs to stay clothed if he wants respect. I wouldn't be surprised if David and Alice end up in the finals. I can't wait for the next show.

Posted by LeAnn – August 10, 2006 4:58 AM

First of all, I want to say that I'm hooked on this show but I'm not sure why. In my opinion, the challenges each week haven't given the designers enough time to think, much less DO a makeover. While I understand that it's important to work as a team, all of the other shows on HGTV either have one uncontested leader or a duo from others who have chosen to work together based upon their complementary strengths. They don't have to decide who is in charge or who has the final say.

Having said that, I want to say that I couldn't be happier that Vanessa is gone. In the very first show, she showed her true colors and acted like the other designers were nothing more than her lackeys...and she's just gone downhill from there. Now, I wonder if they are going to keep airing that commercial where we have to hear her repeat how she DESERVES to have her own show? Please, no!!!

I am not sure how talented Donna is or is not but I will say that I don't believe she was the one arguing with Temple. If you taped the show (I did not), I think you'll see that she is just being put in the unenviable position of having to respond to Temple's attacks. What's more, I think she has handled herself well in the face of Temple's public put-downs.

I do agree with others about David keeping his shirt on.

Last, I agree with others that I'd like to see the designers get a chance to do something a little more "real life" in a more normal amount of time.

Fantastic show of talent and no talent. It is great Vanessa is gone, her room looked like a store. David's room was fantastic. I would never have thought of that rug. very creative. I cried when the twins were crying and then one was taken out. Should have been Donna leaving, she has no talent. Temple showed some promise this time. Alice was awesome. She would be a great design star if she showed more confidence in herself. I hope the producers continue making new seasons. This is entertainment now!!!! I love HGTV. Can't wait until Sunday night to see what is in store for the contestants. Keep up the good work judges. Clive, you are the man! Oh. and David, Please keep your shirt on. It is very distacting and in really bad taste. You look better with clothes on...Glenda T.

Posted by Glenda – August 10, 2006 12:16 AM

Is anyone tired of the "single mom" comments? So what! What does that have to do with the show? It's not like it's a handicap that she has to overcome to do the job; or she's a cancer survivor. She is milking it; and even the judge fell for that tripe. she did a good job on #3.

Otherwise, enjoy the show. Sorry the twins didn't make it. Thought they had talent; but I can see how they didn't cut it on epsiode 3. Was real surprised at that. Twins and Vanessa did an excellent job on episode one. What happened? Who's talent was that?

Donna should have been gone. She is not that creative. Contrived I would say.

I agree. Put a shirt on..to David. Trying to get attention? Guess it worked; but It's a little much since it is all of the time. You are good I have to say however.

What a fabulous show! I was happy to see Vanessa eliminated. Her arrogance was off the charts. The sad thing is that I don't believe she will even learn anything from this. Her bragging in the exit interview showed that ("I make a lot of money!"). The fact that she started a 'design firm' at such a young age has hurt her -- she needs to be an employee or trainee where she learns lessons of teammanship and how to get along (as well as, perhaps, some formal training). Those will serve her much better than bragging, blaming, and finger pointing.

Posted by jacquih – August 9, 2006 10:15 PM

Finally got to watch the show! There is definitely some good talent, and it seems a lot of luck too. I am a designer at heart and would love to know when another season starts and how to participate! Clive, you are wonderful....

Posted by Paula – August 9, 2006 9:20 PM

I am glad that Venessa left.
She was nice at first, but in the second episode when she said the plaites were not her idea, i thought that was really low.

Posted by maddie – August 9, 2006 9:12 PM

So glad to see Vanessa go! I thought she was cocky from the get go and it turns out she's not as talented as she thinks she is! I like Alice and the twins - seem like good people. David's room was awesome but he seems a little full of himself too.

Posted by Nan – August 9, 2006 9:00 PM

I do enjoy the show, but did you pick the designers because of their talents or because of their personalities? It seems that you have created areas of conflict on purpose. Actually, the bickering is quite irritating and I would much perefer to see the contestants try to come up with good design ideas and implement them competently.

Posted by Jean – August 9, 2006 7:38 PM

First of all i love the show! but idon;t agree with the judges decision.I know vanessa might be rude but she's a good designer. The twin shouldn't have gone out.Temple and Donna should have gone out!

Posted by Lisa – August 9, 2006 6:45 PM

I think the twins were great but not strong enough to go it alone, together they would be awesome!
Vanessa was too full of herself. For someone who is supposed to have all these years as a designer, well she sure didn't put any of her training to use on the show!
David has a good eye for seeing the 'Big Picture' (needs to stay clothed though). As for Donna you could fit what she knows about designing on the back of a stamp. Temple is a drama queen, not much style either. Tym needs to soften his work a little and cater to women as well as men. Alice is good she is creative in her approach to design. David and Alice would make great finalists.

Posted by A.C. – August 9, 2006 5:43 PM

I love this show. I must admit I cried when the twins was separated, they really do have a lot of talent. I think Temple should be the one to go and Donna. They are so imature and need to grow up. All Temple worries about was her being Miss Utah, which has nothing to do with being a design star, and Donna likes to spend all the money and argue with Temple. I like David, he has alot going for him and I believe Alice does as well. I totally agree with the judges decision to let Vanessa go because she was so stuck on herself. I am currently attending Interior Design school and it is hard work and takes real talent, I just hope I can be as good as some of these very talented individuals. Keep the episodes coming I love it.

Posted by Crystal – August 9, 2006 5:38 PM

The one thing I cannot get over is the sleeping set-up for the group. Dorm style with only 2 bedrooms! I imagine they are not sleeping very well and that would affect the personalities and mood swings of anyone.

SO GLAD to see Vanessa gone. How could she diss
Alice about material on Episode 2 when Alice comes across as a true professional?

Can't wait to see what happens next. I'm hooked!

Posted by Mary Anne – August 9, 2006 5:33 PM

Glad Vanessa is gone, what a terrible 'tude!

Donna/Temple are so childish, get over it and get to designing (although Temple is the one who is the instigator most of the time)-

David- brilliance, sheer brilliance! But, yes, put your shirt on, we want to see your talent, not your physique!

Clive- you are the perfect host, LOVE you, dude! You ROCK!

We love this show, even my ultra-conservative husband (who hates tv in general!) wants to watch it with us....

Can't wait for Sunday night!

Posted by Donna – August 9, 2006 5:05 PM

So glad that Vanessa is gone gone gone! David, darlin'...keep your shirt on please? You look good, but, you're detracting from what you're supposed to be doing.....designing a room. *you're already well designed!* *G* Please, get rid of Donna. Please. I'm begging you! I've got a 3 year old granddaughter who can decorate *and delegate* better than she can! (granted, my granddaughter does use crayons on the walls)

I'm hoping one of the episodes shows them doing something other than contemporary. Not everyone is "into" contemporary. *me for instance* I find it too harsh and too cold. I say give them $1000.00 each, one room and just let them do with it what they do best. Let them shine shine shine in their own way.

I don't currently have a "fave", however, David is a bit ahead in my book. He's showing creativity at least.

Good luck to everyone on the show!

Posted by Heather – August 9, 2006 4:43 PM

I really don't mind David not wearing a shirt. It just seems to fit his personality. He definitley feels good about himself but not in a way that's a turn off. He just so darn cute that he can pull it off (literaly). And maybe he gets hot while he's working.... I would watch his show; shirt or no shirt.

One more time,
Kristin, I did check for the 2nd time and still do not find either of my blog comments listed, but I am going to try just one more time. If I didn't love the show so much, I probably wouldn't try anymore. Thank you for acknowledging my note about my disappointment though. I appreciate that you read and responded to it.

Episode 1: With all due respect to each contestant entering this competition, what were you thinking Ramona when you tried to re-invent that vacuum cleaner and worse than that, digging through the garbage?? I am resourceful, but not to the point of being ridiculous! So she was first to go. So be it, her mural was as unacceptable as her sculpture. Nice try, but not nearly good enough for a competition such as this. Having said that, both Donna and Vanessa have big, maybe huge egos. I'm afraid that they are going to have a great fall!! Was it Donna that wanted those hideous curtains in the hallway as a make-shift wall? Get a clue because they looked as ugly as could be and so did the kiddy-corner couch. I don't know!!

Episode 2: This was very interesting from the get go! It was fairly obvious who was going to get their own way with the kitchen design between Donna & Temple. Now, we already knew the big ego Donna had, but is Temple going to be another ego tripper too?? Too many chiefs and no Indians does not make for a very pretty site. I agree with David that staying out of most of their quarrels was in his best interest, but couldn't he have backed Temple up in her great idea about doing something with that ugly, out-dated floor. When we look for a new house, we feel the kitchen is one of the most important rooms and flooring can sometimes make or break what people feel about that particular room or sometimes even the house. Gosh, on Designed to Sell, Lisa is always coming up with good, cheap ways of fixing the kitchen floor if necessary. I think Donna is all boss and no designer. All she seems to want to do is "shop". Big deal, anyone can do that!! Between her bossiness and bickering for just about this whole project, I can't see the judges standing for much more. Thank God, next week she works alone!!! Now as for the living room, well Vanessa sure has a lot to learn about taking the backseat, as well as staging a room in selling a house, especially how to do just that. The room was just okay and what was the budget thing about? Vern was exactly right as to there's a time to go for it and a time not to. Why ruin a couch and spend all that time and energy, when you have a budget to buy a new one and perhaps still stay under budget. Her curtain treatments were good and sufficient for this makeover, but nothing exceptional for someone who keeps throwing her 7 yrs. of experience in everyone's faces. Let's see your stuff if you're that good instead of your over-inflated ego!!! I still can't believe that the heirloom table was messed around with. Unbelievable that they were able to make it spotless, without a trace!! Alice had every right to be upset with Vanessa and the loss of a good teammate, Joe, but I just felt that she was acting childish when the judges voted Joe's show cancelled and she refused to leave when Clive told her to go to the green room and wait. All of these women need to grow up and act like adults with some sense of maturity. The child-like behaviors have to stop, they are ridiculous and definitely not welcome. This is a television show for adults, not teenagers and dysfunctional behavior. Moving on, the bedroom was the best, but it definitely lacked a "punch" of color. They could have put color in window treatments or in bed pillows... Guys sometimes don't think about how boring colorless rooms look, but it was still a nice job guys!!
All that my husband & I could think about after this show was to ask the women this question, What goes before a "great" fall?? Perhaps if they all thought less about themselves and more about the clients they were working for, some of the shody work and childish bickering would have ceased to exist. Perhaps that is why Vanessa and Donna have their own businesses!! Food for thought!

Episode 3: This was an amazing show to watch from start to finish. I truly believe that the right persons were chosen to win as well as to lose. First of all, either Vanessa did not understand the directives of this project or she is not one who can think on her feet. Having said that, I believe that some people can work together very well as a team effort, but not do well on his/her own. That was what I thought about both Teman and Teran's work this week. Because they were only asking two to leave, Teran's was the best of the three contestants. David's room was very uniquely done and he used his resources very well. An artist he truly is, but design star only time will tell. Tym's room was just okay. I still don't understand exactly what those cages were about or that leash hanging. He commented very briefly about it being like a noose and I still don't get it, but he scraped by by the skin of his teeth and that's all that matters. Good luck on your next assignment! As for Donna's room, mediocre. She definitely cannot see outside her box and the judge was right on with her comment about the couch once again. Donna you need to come up with another idea for placing furniture. Your room wasn't all that for all the ego tripping you do! Maybe shopping is your best effort, too bad!! Alice your work was Grade A in every way. You also used your resources to show how elegant a room could look with a limited budget and supplies. I can see you going all the way to the end of this competition!! Good luck to you! Vanessa your room said it all. It was not a room of a topnotch designer and that's all I'll say. The judges spoke for the masses!! We should have been spared those crocodile tears as they were really about your broken ego. You are very young and obviously still have a lot to learn about people and your narcissism. Hopefully, your professional work is better than what we saw on this show!! Next week proves to be another challenge for both Temple and Donna as well as Alice and all the guys -- Good luck to all of you. Pick someone besides Donna to be boss and handler of the funds. Pick a guy to be in charge with a backbone and don't let Donna do all the shopping!! No arguing girls - remember this is a show for adults, not children!!

Posted by Karen – August 9, 2006 4:03 PM

I think it's very clear that David is the front runner so far, and as far the the material applications in his room, remember it's a conceptual space so a rug can be made out of wood shavings! Just one thing David, keep your shirt on!

Posted by Jason – August 9, 2006 2:30 PM

I'm glad David won. Most look at David's floor as impractical or an art installation, but concept was all the contestants had for this challenge, considering the lack of time and money. Conceptually the floor was great, if they had chosen to use the design in a practical application, other materials would have to be used. I'm not sure about Donna, she seems big on shopping and lacks design sense. Magic doesn't happen when you turn a couch at an angle! She's done this twice! Temple's drama (I'm going home!) reminded me of Tonya Harding's scene at Olympic competition about the laces on her skates. I don't think Donna or Temple will make it to the final show.
If I were on the show I would tend to keep myself in the background...it looks tough to be eliminated when you've built yourself such a tall pedestal in such a short time.
(hmmm, Vanessa?)

Posted by Ann – August 9, 2006 2:26 PM

Donna needs to go! She's a shopper not a designer. I think Tym is good but could do better; David was very good. Looking forward to seeing the next show.

Posted by Rose – August 9, 2006 2:25 PM

Love the twins, such warm personalities!! What about having them on Designed to Sell? The visual aspect of Davids room rocked!!

Posted by Susan – August 9, 2006 2:10 PM

I did not agree with the Judges' decision last week, but I definitely agreed with their decision this week to let Vanessa go, but not one of the twins. I think they would work really well together, but they are a little weak apart. I think they should have their own show, or at least host some specials.

Thank you for a great show, especially this time of year when everything on TV are re-runs. I am looking forward to seeing what happens this Sunday. Please get rid of Donna and Temple an get on with the design show. Please tell David to keep his shirt on. We do not watch HGTV to see someone take their shirt off or try to be sexy.

Posted by Betty – August 9, 2006 12:27 PM

Soooooo glad Vanessa is gone. I thought she was a nice, honest person at first, but then, boy, was I wrong! first episode: took all the credit!
She got a lot of help from David and Teran! second episode: Almost every decision in that room (like the ugly sofa, the emptiness, the paint on the coffee table,) was her idea! SHE should have been eliminated, not Joseph! She even denied the casue about the plates!Ughh! third episode: Her room was really bad! She was perky and bragging about it too. I guess it's just instant karma. She really deserved it! Alice and David's room really rocked! David is a great designer. I like Alice's personality and character, she is a good team player, too bad we couldn't see here talent until this episode. She was held back by Ramona and Vanessa!

The whole Donna Temple thing was exciting but childish. Temple's room this week was Gorgeous!
Booo Vanessa!

Posted by sally – August 9, 2006 11:48 AM

Another great show! David's room was awesome, and I really liked Alice's room, too. These two are my picks for the finalists. Every week, they are so solid. Temple's room was a pleasant surprise, as well.

I do have one question, though. Why is Donna still here? She can't budget, she can't get along in a team, and when she finally worked alone, her room was butt ugly. That was not a space I would want to sit down and relax in. It was harsh and just put me off. I agree that Vanessa's room showed a lack of imagination, and I'm glad to see her gone. And I expected better from the twins, but I still think Donna's room was worse even than both of theirs. I know, it's all subjective, but she just hasn't shown any talent to me.

Can't wait for next week!

Posted by DJ – August 9, 2006 10:28 AM

I just have to say this. Get over the "Temple has talent" thing. She was married to an auto tech--she probably saw those ideas in a auto magazine. She's pathetic--including the tears and "i'm going home" in the green room. PLEASE. She's an aging beauty queen who hasn't quite forgotten all the tricks to get the judge's attention. Don't think that's going to work on this show. To be a good TV designer you have to have vision, confidence and PERSONALITY. You don't have to be arrogant. So far it looks like David is the one with those qualities (although, surfer dude, you do need to put a shirt on when you are being filmed I wouldn't object to seeing your abs on the beach, but on this show it's too much). Joseph seemed to have those qualities also, but we didn't really get a chance to see him shine. Too bad. I think Alice lacks confidence and true vision. Donna has confidence and nothing else. Tym has potential. I think the twins should get their own show. Clive, maybe they could replace that chick on the Chicago "Designed to Sell" team. They would at least be more creative than she is! Sorry, dear. I love you dearly, but she needs to go!
Pat W.

Posted by Pat W – August 9, 2006 9:13 AM

Vanessa's and Teman's parting comments said it all. Teman left with grace, dignity and maturity well beyond his 26 years. Vanessa's comments seemed more like those of a 6-year-old than a 26-year-old!

David's design was, indeed, "genius"--a true silk purse created from a sow's ear! But the "rug" stands up only as an art installation, whereas Alice's design was as practical as it was beautiful.

I'm a Kitchen Designer, so I can't wait for the next episode!

Posted by Jill – August 9, 2006 4:42 AM

I am so glad Vanessa is gone! Hooray! But I was sorry to see the twin go. Unfortunately neither of the twins did much with their rooms - they both spent way too much time on the walls.
If there is a Season 2 (and I hope there is) I would like to see all 10 contestants compete throughout, and get a score each week. The person with the highest score would win. That would be more fair.
I too wish Joseph was still on the show.
Love you, Clive!

Posted by tara – August 9, 2006 12:57 AM

I love this show. It is so fun to watch, I just wish it were on another night, I usually have to tape it or watch it later in the week. Like almost everyone, I was sooo glad to see Vanessa go. She was a backstabber, annoying, arrogant. . .you see where I am going with this! Designers have to work with people, not just rooms. And, let's face it, her room looked like a beauty supply store, not a design from one.

Every one has said that the Beauty supply store was the hardest, but if you look at who did the rooms from there, we see why it looks hard. I thought the pet store would be the hardest, but David made it look easy.

I started out hoping for Temple, as a fellow Utahan, but after watching her audition (can you say tacky and sleazy) and all of her catfights I am ready for her to go. Also, as aforesaid, I am so sick of the single mom thing. You would think that if she wanted her boys to be pround she would have done a less sleazy audition!

I love the twins, and I agree they should be on a show together, but I don't think they have it in them to win it on their own.

I loved David's room, but must agree, it was definately look/not touch. That may be what they were after, but in the end, practicality has some say in design. I love Alice, I hope she can keep up the good work.

My one complaint is that so far only very contemporary designs get the applause from the jugdges. That is not my design style, and while I can appreciate it, I don't think it should be portrayed as the only acceptable design. Any thing else. . . oh, David, keep your shirt on, it is Design Star, not Porn Star. You look very nice, but what dows that have to do wiht design?

Glad to see Vanessa gone. Judges should bring Joseph back. I think he took the fall for his teammates. Like David and Alice; but wish David would keep his clothes on and Alice would take more of a leadership role.

Posted by Sharon – August 8, 2006 8:56 PM

I believe David will win he's works really hard and it shows. Alice seems to be moving along very well, each week she seems to let a little more of her personal style in the mix and she should keep that up. Donna is into decorating more than designing. And the whole Donna vs Temple thing is getting real old. If they worked more and argued less maybe they could win a challenge.
Temple has some good ideas but her attitude is to childish sometimes, I hope shes gone next.
I was glad to see Vanessa go she had the worst attitude when things went well she took all the credit and when things didnt work out she blamed everyone else. Tym style seems kind of plain and boring like he plays it safe, he's gotta kick it up a notch because he is talented. When it comes to the twins It seems like they work better together like they are kinda weak on their own.

I love the concept behind the show. I have to say I have not been overly impressed with everyone's design skills. Mostly all of the completed designs have been on the edge of modern/contemporary. Have the contestants think out of their comfort zones. Future clients are not going to be interested in only one design style. Loosen the purse strings and give them a workable budget so we can see some design skills truly shine.

Posted by Colleen – August 8, 2006 7:40 PM

Well, I might be a little bit bias as I live in Miami(smile)no talent is talent. David by far is the most TALENTED,he also comes through up to the 3rd episode as being extremely level headed and even tempered such a great attitude.
Amazing Show I sincerely hope it continues!!!!

I totally agreed with the judges on this one - David's room was definitely the best. I must admit that I find it annoying how he obviously tries to use his looks to appeal to the judges (why the heck did he need to spend the entire episode topless?). And it irritates me that Vern seems to only like contemporary design.

I actually disagree with most of the posters about Donna. I think she has talent that keeps getting overshadowed by Temple's need to be the center of attention (once again, another one trying to appeal to the camera with her looks). I actually thought Temple's design was pretty much exactly what she'd probably seen many times in the car magazines that have a female pin-up - no originality at all, very predictable 50's style red and chrome. I think she should've been booted first.

I like Alice and Tym, and their designs are good, but both are too mousy to be design stars. Actually, even though Vanessa was annoying, she was precisely the type HGTV seems to like for their hosts (kind of obnoxious and in-your-face).

Posted by Jennifer – August 8, 2006 4:47 PM

I have really been underwhelmed with most of the design or lack thereof that these mostly so-called professional designers have exhibited thus far on the show. That said I was glad to see a challenge where their individual talents would show through. I can't believe though how poorly these people manage their time & money! Glad I don't have to pay these guys! David definitely is awesome, and I found Temple's work to be surprisingly fresh and interesting. Never saw any talent in the twins since day one of the show, although they seem like sweet loveable people and would probably be good hosting some kind of show that doesn't necessarily rely on their design talents alone. "Glamalistic?" What the heck is that? Who cares as long as Vanessa's gone..now she can go home and decorate her Bratz dollhouse. BTW, does anyone remember that it was Alices's idea to cut the sofa down???

Posted by Lisa – August 8, 2006 4:12 PM

I was so glad to see Vanessa go. She was very much out for herself. She took total credit for the design in episode #1, blamed her teammates in episode #2 and was amateurish in episode #3.

Temple got lucky when she got the automotive vignette. It was only because she was familiar with those items that she did well. Please go to school and learn teamwork and design. Professional desingers call people like you "decorettes".

I love Alice. I would watch a show hosted by her. I love all the guys on the show. They all have great talent. I think this last episode would be a tough challenge for any professional designer.

Teron was so gracious when he left he will do well. I did like the final look of the room. I think forgetting the paint just threw him off from the beginning.

Love the show,

Debbie

Rather than focusing on the designers, I am focusing on the actual format for the show. It reminds me somewhat of "Designer Finals", which I've never watched much because it seems to be prone to failure: ie, too little time, too little money!

I liked the room format on Show #3 the very best. The other two settings I didn't like, because it seemed to be way too little money and time to give designers an actual chance to be successful. How was any team going to redecorate a castle bedroom, monstrous family/living room, or kitchen with the floor from hell with $2000 and 3 work days? These are designers, not magicians!! My husband and I do a great job with very little money decorating and designing our home and cabin, but we have time to find stuff as well as to make stuff. And, yes, these people are supposed to be professionals, but it has to be do-able. It would be interesting, I think, to have the judges have a template of what they would envision SHOULD or COULD have been done with the time and the money that the audience could see would look nice - ala Designer's Challenge. (We're all supposed to accept that these judges are great designers - let them strut their stuff!) Like, this is what you COULD have done with that money and time. They do make suggestions, "you could have covered the floor with rugs", "you could have done flooring, etc". Still, I'd rather see their ideas in a cohesive design. I can't say I'm yet a "Design Star" fan. I watch Redesign, and Designed to Sell. They're by far my favorites, and I prefer them to Design Star.

This show is design's answer to The Apprentice. It's a good concept with, I think, broad appeal. The in-fighting, the egos and the personalities just add to the drama. Many seem to be glad Vanessa is gone, but who will they love to hate now? And, if Donna and Temple start getting along? So much for all that delicious tension.

My only critique is that there is too little time spent with the judges. There is real talent there and we don't get to see or hear much from them. I would think they could include some mentoring in their comments to the competitors. Maybe they could occasionally take turns sharing a story from their early days.

Overall, love the show and hope there's a season two in the works.

Posted by Leigh – August 8, 2006 1:28 PM

Love David - glad he won! He & Alice are the ones I think will be the last two standing. Both should have their own shows. How ingenious - to have the twins on their own show - would love to see that. I think all three would be totally unique shows, more than anything currently on. Brilliant!

Posted by bd – August 8, 2006 12:42 PM

Loved Episode 3. The true decorators/designers really stepped forward. David is awesome! Temple surprised a lot of people, but she was no surprise to me. She pulled off something the designers with years of experience could not. Can't wait to see what she does next. If she could only ignore Donna and stop letting her get uder her skin. It's pretty obvious Donna is full of herself and is intimidated by Temple's looks and the fact that Temple is on that show with no design education. But I'm here to tell you, if you've got a natural talent and love for decorating, you don't need a degree to validate yourself. You go Temple!

I'm so glad to see Vanessa leave. All that bragging and she just never got it. Being a Design Star isn't just about how well you decorate a room. Sometimes you have to think outside the box and she failed miserably.

Way to go HGTV. Didn't think I would enjoy this reality show but I do.

Posted by LindaFaye – August 8, 2006 12:15 PM

Go Temple.....I was so impressed with her creativity on this episode. Her room, in my opinion, was right up there with David's. It was sleek, classy and right on target for her theme. That being said, however, if Temple is going to win this competition, she does need to drop the "Miss Utah" and the "single Mom" comments. Concentrate on her talent and not let Donna get under her skin. It's very apparent that she was the under-dog from the start and it got to her in the early episodes. I'm hoping that her success in this episode will give her the confidence to put all of her's and Donna's bickering behind her and give her the confidence to speak up and be heard. She has alot of natural talent and I look forward to seeing more of what she has to offer.

I can't imagine having to design a room from merchandise found in a pet store, automotive, beauty or a camping store. My compliments to all of the contestants for their efforts.

Enjoyed the show once again, but still would love to know how the judges and/or producers define a "design star." Without question, David should be in the final two...shirt or no shirt...who cares? Maybe "no shirt" is his good luck charm. I have to agree with elaine's comment about practicality though. Could one really live in David's room? Maybe all the sculptures were glued solid, but the rug seemed impossible. It nevertheless looked amazing. Such artistic ability he has. Here again, let us in on the criteria for judging. If reality had been a factor, then Alice's room had the beauty and livability for the win. I hope it comes down to Alice and David, but it will be difficult to vote because I think they are both winners. J

This episode (3rd) was a complete turn around!
David's use of his imagination proved to be brilliant! I loved the "sculpture made of twisted dog chews! It really looked like a piece of contenporary art especially with the color he chose. Great design and a good eye!
Temple was somewhat of a suprise only because she was "stiffled" previously. Her use of the automotive was a good design.
Alice is above all (in every aspect of each episode she did) is brilliant. She and David could be the two left. Difficult choice!
Donna also spurised me with her design because she did not know anything about automotive, but used her imagination to pull off the room. She has made every episode, barely, but she is still there.
I was not impressed with Tym's room until he gave his insiration "Andy Warhall" (spelling may be off there). Although not as good as Andy, the basic concept was there is a way. Hey maybe the dog chain hanging could be preceived as a "switch chain for a ceiling light"! No.
Vanessa was again a disappointment, but proved she does not have what it takes to be a designer.
The Twins, I hated to see them parted, but it is pretty obvious that they are a team that works well together (which is a rare thing).
I am looking forward to next week! A kitchen and team work! I hope they can pull it off.

I hope they can do it as I am biting my nails waiting for Sunday! Living in Alaska, no one in their right mind wants summer to go by fast!!!

I have NEVER watched a reality show, never liked them...LOVE THIS ONE ON HGTV!!!

Posted by Adrianna – August 8, 2006 10:24 AM

I loved the fact that Vanessa was booted. Like the previous bloggers, she was just too arrogant to be good. Although I got a HIlde Santos Thomas vibe off her. Maybe Trading Spaces is looking to replace their Dragon Queen. I really was blown away by David's room. Like Cynthia. It was genuis!! Too bad about the twins they are soo cutey. It will be hard for the one left to go on without his brother. Alice's room was very serene. It reflected her beautifully. Sorry I was not crazy about Temple's room. Donna is the doodad queen. I did like her lamp though. It was great. Tym, darling, COLOR. It's a beautiful thing. Vern is gonna ding you on that every time. Embrace the color wheel. Can't wait for next week. Have fun designers! We are all enjoying your work.

Posted by Diana – August 8, 2006 9:34 AM

Do you think they separated the twins because they depended on each other too much?

Glad to see Vanessa go....way too much ego.

Posted by Janey – August 8, 2006 8:33 AM

My tv is constantly on HGTV. So I watch all the designstar programs. I for one am glad VANESSA is gone. Too much arrogance.

David is my choice for design star.

Posted by IRMA – August 8, 2006 6:53 AM

David's design was definitely superior; he has
great potential as the HGTV design star. Not
only is he personally talented, but he was able to
endure last week's work with the bickering duo.
That, alone, is an achievement!
I agree that Vanessa needed to be removed. She
designed as if she was decorating a display window in a beauty shop. What a mess. With various capes, towels, headwraps, available, she might have created fabric art. She clearly has no imagination. I also fail to see Donna's versatility.

Posted by Eddie – August 8, 2006 5:40 AM

Love the show So far.
Sorry to see Vanessa go, Expected more of her. Really soory to see one of the twins go. I enjoyed watching them. I was not surprised by Temple. I knew that she had talent. Education does not make a designer; talentdoes. Davids room was the best, but I think a show with him as the host would look too much like what's on HGTV now. Besides, I wish he would keep his shirt on. Some of us find his partial nudity offensive. Mr. dog art should be gone and not Venessa or the twin. I much prefered both of thier rooms to his. Donna should have left the last episode. The southern chicks stlye looks to much like something I've seen on anotherchannels hit design show. Can we say Trading Spaces? Of all the remaing contestants I would rather see a show staring the remaining twin or Temple. But it looks like David will win. If the rest dont step it up.

Posted by Jacquie – August 8, 2006 4:35 AM

I really love this show.

I really was tired for all the Bragging Vannessa was doing and glad the judges saw though her. I don't think she really understood the project.

I am surprised that Donna is still around. I thought she would have been eliminated in show #2.

I am also suprised of the talent Temple has. She is not really a team player but alone she is good.

I would have voted as follows,

David, Temple, Alice, Tym, Teran, Teman, Donna, Vennessa.

Posted by Mary – August 8, 2006 1:30 AM

David was astonishing, the makings of a new Picasso. I could see him having his own design line of sculptures and new innovative and fun furniture. He definitely can think outside the box, and with out having to waste time on the two cats, he was able to strut his stuff. He is now my favorite.

Temple shocked me, shows that some people are just born with talent naturally, but her attitude stinks. The question was what was the vision for the room not why she wanted to succeed, the ?I?m a single mom bit is getting old.? Never the less if she would straighten up, she definitely has potential to be a designer, not a design star.

Alice?s room was great and very clean, although I agree with Vern; I wish she would have expanded her view towards the whole room. I give her credit for thinking outside the box, what she did with the book shelve was great and I would have never guessed that she shopped at a camping store.

Donna was like usual has some talent, but nothing impressive. Needs to be the next to go, still has no good budget managing skills. He blew it by not buying paint and the room looked cramped into one corner. Maybe she should have listened to Temple?s advice last week, now I know why that kitchen turned out so bland, Donna imposed her boring design style and did not take advantage of David?s art and Temple?s ideas.

Tym?s table was imaginative and very attractive but that is all I liked in his room, looking at it, I felt trapped inside a cage. I expected more out of him. He like Joseph is good in carpentry they would do well together, but not alone. Very nice guy though.

Teman made a poor job at budgeting and wound up paying for it dearly. I was sad to see him go, I definitely expected more out of him and Teran.

Teran has to get with it if he expects to stay longer, I agree with some of the comments about they work great as a team, that would be a good show, still is was sad to see my favorite twin go.

Finally, Vanessa is gone. I guess when it came time to put her money where her mouth is, it did not pay up. I guess the hot glue caught up with her hot head. I feel sorry for her students, and who publishes her work?!!! The comment that she pulled a Ramona was good but actually Ramona would have been more creative. My 13 year old can design a better collage with her eyes closed. I was waiting to see if on her own she could match her talk, guess not. Her face expressions was priceless, she loves to criticize, but can not take it when it comes down to her. Brenda Lee

Posted by Brenda Lee – August 8, 2006 1:13 AM

VANESSA is gone!!!!!! Her thin layer of "Me, Me, Me," was seen through and her room was a teenage joke. I loved the expression on her face when she was told to leave, Priceless. I would have loved to find out what other contestants should be gone, as mentioned by the judge.

I hated to see the twins parted and the love between them was felt by so many.

David did a great job and I feel he will be a finalist.

Alice has talent and I hope she shines more each episode.

Next episode, Donna and Temple again, at each other. I would celebrate them both leaving. Jealously and immaturity do not fit on this show. I feel sorry for the ones that have to be in the room with them and their claws sharpend and the cat fight beginning.

Clive you are still the best, #1 in my book.

Posted by Brenda – August 8, 2006 1:09 AM

Episode 3 reminded me of Design on a Dime. Everyone was given a a bare bachelorish room and had to bring it to life. There was no customer to deal with, so they had free rein. In some ways that was great, but in other ways, it wasn't realistic. If they had tried to make these rooms for a real customer, only Alice's would have passed. Everything else was too weird or too bland.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the bright colors of David's and the twins, and Tym and Donna had some great elements, imo. But would you want a room that looked like a garage, would you want a carpet you couldn't walk on, or would you want a couch decorated with eyeliner? Not me!

Posted by MC – August 8, 2006 12:59 AM

David's room was definitely the best -- he considered the whole room, not just parts of it. I thought the fish bowls sculpture was so GREAT! Tym's room was also interesting (minus the hanging dog leash) -- I wish he had budgeted paint!! I join the chorus: "I'm so glad Vanessa is gone!" Her ego and her "I won an award for that" attitude (or justification for crappy ideas) was too much for me. I still think Donna should not be there -- she belittled and ignored Temple last week and then whined that Temple insulted her. Donna seems threatened by the fact that Temple has no design training. However, Temple showed more talent in this individual challenge than Donna did. Maybe Donna should have listened to Temple's ideas more last week. Poor Alice has really had it rough -- Ramona and Temple the first week; Vanessa the second. She finally showed what she could do when working on her own without troublemakers. I would have liked to have seen Joseph's take on this...he should be there instead of Donna. Too bad about the twins being separated, but their rooms were terrible (almost as bad as Vanessa's). Either could have gone, but I can't help but like both of them. Great show...this is the first reality show I have ever watched. I usually can't stand them! Love you, Clive!

Posted by hook 'em horns – August 8, 2006 12:30 AM

David was stellar. Alice's was next best. So very happy Vanessa is gone. I felt after the way she behaved last week she should have been the one to get the boot, not Joseph. I'd love to see the Bottle Blonds gone next week.

Posted by Jennifer – August 8, 2006 12:23 AM

I love the show (and mostly everything else on HGTV) Clive is such an excellent host. The judges seem fair and very human, although I did think some of the comments to Tym were too harsh. So glad Vanessa is cancelled; the bragging is bratty and immature.
Personally I think Alice is a designing genius in her own quiet way. And David is almost a visionary with his work.
Super fun and neat show.

Love this show. Really dislike competition/reality shows but this one is short and interesting. Why don't we have Alice and David do a show together and the twins do another one?
Two more design shows with interesting and likable personalities. I would watch that.

Posted by Maureen – August 8, 2006 12:07 AM

David's Room was really amazing. Temple's was very well executed it looked very streamlined. other than that no one elses appealed to me. I was glad to see Teran and Vanessa go. I have no idea what Donna is still doing on the show. I seriously believe Joseph should still be on the show he made the mistake of choosing Vanessa to be on his team if it werent for that I believe he wouldve been the next design star.

Posted by Marvin – August 7, 2006 11:18 PM

Donna - you have the beauty & personality to carry a show - if you can only step up with some ability - just ignore Temple! Vanessa-it's good to be confident but unconscious competence is better. David - dude, put your shirt on - it makes me look bad. The twins are great - hard workers and just good guys. Alice - you are sweet and show great potential to win. Tym - ditto without the sweet. Oh and Clive - love to hear you say "cluttuh" and "furnichuh" and pretty much anything else ! Great show !!

Posted by Dennis – August 7, 2006 10:30 PM

I am hooked also. I watch the show twice a week...yes the same show twice(re-airing).

Glad to see Vanessa go. She was full of herself, and only won the first week because David did the work. I mean really...she took all the credit because she bought a pillow?

Sorry to see the twins split, but I didn't think either of their designs were good this week.

Temple did OK with her design...but bringing up the 'kids' was way out of bounds. I am sure the rest of the designers have familys too. I would have cancled her just for that. A designer needs to be proud of their work, not wimper and use guilt. Also the 'cat fights' with Donna/anyone have to stop! I almost turned off the TV last week.

Thought Donna did better this week. maybe she is better on her own.I can tell she loves to shop...but that is NOT what design is all about.

Just Loved Alice's room. I thought she was very creative with her materials...Didn't look like a campground to me.

Tym...well, I also didn't get the dog chain..but wished he would have been given a chance to explain it. The Andy W. type theme was very good, I thought and he did do some great things with the dog cages. Perhaps it is the design judges who are 'not with it'.I do not always agree with the judges comments...while they are very good at what they do...even they have their own 'style'. And I think the judges should take that into account with each 'want-to-be-' designer. I am sure not evryone would like each of their work either.

And david...ah vision! The room I mean. I could care less what he looks like...the show is about design, and his was great. Instead of filling a room with things from a pet store ...David created pet store things into something to design a room with.

Can't wait for the next show...

Oh and Clive...it must be hard for you to
say "Your show is cancled".

I am completely hooked on HGTV! The show great! I stayed up to watch the show (was sooo sleepy) and I was awake up to the elimination round but then I fell asleep:(.......... By now I now that Vanessa got the ax....YES!..... She was really getting on my nerves. No matter how talented you are a bad attitude will get you nowhere. I think Teman and Teron should get their own show. They're fabulous. The competition really remains amongst all except David......he is clearly a cut above the rest.

Posted by Dionne – August 7, 2006 10:15 PM

I was glad to see Vanessa go, also, as she was just too conceited and unethical. I do, however, think that it was not fair to have the designers pick different stores- they should have all had the same type of store to shop from. The beauty supply store doesn't give a person a whole lot of elements to choose from. I think Temple's room was very good, also Alice's. David is a great designer, but he is as full of himself as Vanessa is. He needs to keep his shirt on- this is a design show...we don't need sleaze to entertain us. If he will be the design star he will need to finish getting dressed in the morning! His audition tapes were so full of himself, it was embarrassing to watch. He needs to get a grip.

Posted by Jill – August 7, 2006 9:57 PM

GREAT JOB David....great room and great abs!!!!
Glad to see Vanessa go......too "cheeky" for me and her room design sucked........hanging a blow dryer for art? Even I, an ex -hairdresser would not do that!
GOOD JOB Temple, I like the chrome and red....gray was a good touch.
Too bad both twins did not go! Colbolt Blue with Gold circles? Come on, he could have done better.
Orange tape??????? Enough said!
Looking forward to another catfight next week. Keep your shirt on David, their claws will be coming out hard and fast.
LOVED the hanging lesh. Easy Vern!!!!!Nothing wrong with a little leather. This rice queen should know! Where is the "studded" collar? See ya in a week!

I think the Judges made the right decision for this show. David , Temple and Alice were clearly the best and Vannessa and the Twins clearly the worst, with Donna and Tym in the middle.

I really liked the challenge - but I think the concept that the beauty supply store was harder is off base. I just think that the Designers who got the beauty supply store were not as creative. It was the pet store that I really thought was tough and the Designers who got it were very creative.

The style of the show really amuses me

Episode 1 - Weekend Warriors maybe?
Episode 2 - Designed to Sell
Episode 3 - Design Remix
Episode 4 - Looks like it might be Face Lift

I wonder when the Designers are going to catch on and start guessing what show is next. I wonder what the finale will be

My daughter and I love your show (my son likes it too, but don't tell anyone)! We really want to see Temple go because of her childish attitude and her inability to get along with others. We think the twins would do a great show together. We also think David and Alice are great! Can't wait to see next weeks show!

Posted by Holly/Lillie – August 7, 2006 8:37 PM

The 3rd episode was the one that told the tale of who realy can design on their own. David's was fantastic; Alice was great; Temple was suprising but good; Donna was alright because in Episode 2 Donna "chastized" Temple on her use of Spray Paint...what type of paint did Donna use in this episode??? "spray paint"..real class Donna, real class especially after you broadcast it as basically "stupid" when Temple used it!
Vanessa showed absolutely no imagination; she missed the concept that it was supposed to be a "living area" and not a beauty supply store. The only item she got commented on was the "boa hot glued to the lamp"! Not an original idea. She should have used other items in the store; after all, beauty stores do not just sell lipstick, hair driers and wigs. But as she said in her interview after leaving, she has and makes good money so she is happy!
Next week, #4 Donna and Temple are at each other again; wonder which one gets booted. From the preview, I heard a woman in tears that said she did the best she could, wonder who and what that indicates! Can't wait to see, ITS ANOTHER KITCHEN MAKEOVER!!!!!

WOW!! What a show!!! I am so addicted that I can't stop thinking about it. Over and over,
in my imagination I have been making my own rooms from each of the paint can challenges. In my entire life there is nowhere that I would rather have been at more, than at that challenge. Not being there feels like I've lost the love of my life! Boohoo. :( I picked David out right away as a strong contender but I have one problem with his design - the "rug". I thought the pattern and colors were great and really pulled the design together but it wasn't something that could actually be put in a real room. To me a rug isn't something that you can vacuum up with a shop vac. I like Alice the best. She seems very real and sincere. For my taste, David is too cocky and too proud of his "pecs". David, for pete sakes put a shirt on! I only want to see your DESIGN talent.

Posted by Jannida – August 7, 2006 8:06 PM

First off - hooray Vanessa's gone. With no one to put the blame on this week, she really showed her lack of design skills. Clearly David's artistic ability was the reason the bedroom won in episode 1. In episode 2, she was willing to let Joseph be the "fall guy". (I think Joseph could have put together a nice room in episode 3. It would have been great watching him compete among the others. I still think the judges made a bad call.)

Both Temple and Donna really surprised me this week, but I think next week working together again will be another "cat fight".

Did not like the twins rooms or Tym's.

The two to watch are David and Alice. Both are very creative people who get along with everyone, however David's personality shines with his artistic ability. Alice seems more in the background. Come on Alice, show us your personality.

The suspense of waiting for another week is killing me. Maybe I should tape all the episodes so I could have a continuous show.

Posted by Julie – August 7, 2006 8:05 PM

Wow! Awesome show again. Like most everybody above, I am glad Vanessa's gone and her room looked like one of the nail salons you find at the mall...didn't really look like a room in a person's home, which I assume was the goal. Much as I don't care for Donna or Temple, they both surprised me. I didn't think either of them had it in them to do as well as they did in their rooms. I didn't like Donna's room at all, and the offset couch with those rectangles of color on the back wall, the rectangles of her displayed "art", etc., was giving me vertigo! But her wall came out really cool and was a surprise to me. I'm not a spray paint fan but she did get it to work better than I had anticipated.

Temple's room was clean and chic and really cool. I loved what she added to the couch (not that I know what they were). Its pretty hard to feel sorry for a woman who tells everybody she can that she's a single mom but was Miss Utah! But like somebody mentioned above, if this is supposed to be 10 professional designers, she should never have made the show. But I give her credit for some taste (Donna is a little over the top for me).

Tym's room was a bit disappointing without the paint and adding the wall art (though I understand he did it to add color), but I think he does have what it takes to be a great designer.

David surprised me; his room looked so awesome and it was hard to tell on tv that it was made from pet store fodder. Nicely done (and I think the purpose was all about looks; how can you possibly make a room liveable buying things from specialty stores?), David. And nice as your body is, I too would prefer a bit of mystery and a shirt! Less ego, more of that wonderful sense of humor I've seen in you!

Teran and Teman...I love your personalities, guys, but not sure if the design talent is there. I've not seen a leadership role yet and in your interview tape, I don't see much of note behind you either. But you are great spirit boosters and team players and have hearts as big as anybody could hope for. I wish you both luck in your future endeavors. I hate to say it, but neither room was too cool...I'm surprised you both didn't go last night (and trust me, I'm glad Vanessa is gone!)...

Alice? Such a lovely and serene room. I loved the color and loved the pillows and the work you did. I would have liked to see a bit more, but considering where you had to shop and the time you had to do your room, you also worked some magic. Good job, girl! And I never would have figured your supplies were from a camping store!

As always, Clive and Vern...you are both awesome and try pretty hard to be decent and respectful of these contestants. Hard not to always speak your mind, I know, but you guys are doing great!

David is the man! What vision! To this point, he far exceeds the others. I like that his work ethic and talent does the "talking", not his ego. He's great to look at as well! I'd watch his show.

I love show and there was so much to choose from in the beauty shop. I agree David's room was the best overall, he should get his own show. I can't wait for next season, just tell me where to sign up and Clive you handsome devil, it was nice to meet you in Palm Springs hanging out.

Thanks,

This show is so great. Glad Vanessa is gone.....the producers & judges should go over last weeks footage and admit the mistake of voting off Joesph which should have been Vanessa. BRING HIM BACK!!! Wouldn't that be exciting? Kind of a "Survivor" twist. Shake up the competition a little. I hope it comes down to David and Alice (just love her). GREAT JOB HGTV!!!!

I'd like to echo the comment that the twins would be great together on a show. Someone here suggested Design on a Dime and I think that's a great choice. The network needs an East Coast DoD, and they have the personality and creativity to pull it off. They show a lot of heart and communication skills in addition to ability.

As for this week, I would agree with David as the winner and Vanessa as the reject. Temple surprised me; she's more talented than I suspected, but her poor-me routine's gotta go! And I DO NOT CARE about her beauty pageants or her "baby-daddy."

I suspect Donna is being kept on the show as an irritant. She's a "decorator," not a designer and she'll tank eventually. I also agree that Joseph shouldn't have been eliminated so early. He had a lot of promise.

Posted by jukesgrrl – August 7, 2006 5:07 PM

Sorry everyone but I could've been happy with both the twins gone. They seem to work better not only with each other but with others. Did they say they went to design school?
Anyway, yes it was time for Miss Egolistic to go. Although that was a hard store to design with.
David's room did look the best but sooo not livable unless you think you can clean around the "rug"(did look pretty cool though).
Now as for Miss Temple, she has some great ideas and I would've liked to hear more of her ideas rather hearing her and Donna talk over each other the whole episode last week. Are they ever going to listen to each other? They are sooo each other!
CAN'T WAIT TIL NEXT WEEK!

David TOTALLY deserved to win! I loved the paint job on the walls-very unique! Temple surprised me! Her room looked really nice, but the whole "I'm supporting my family" deal was a cheap way to get to the judges. I am SO GLAD Vanessa is gone! At the begining I was like, "She's cool," but then she turned into this self-absorbed little "I'm everything" person. The whole "glamilistic" deal really annoyed me. She needs to realize that she's not the center of the universe. Anyway-props David!

Posted by Kelly Q. – August 7, 2006 4:46 PM

Love the show!! Obvious though that they made an effort to NOT eliminate both people who shopped at the beauty supply store so that it didn't look unfair. Glad to see annoying, self-touting Vanessa go.
I love Clive and Vern! I would love to hear more of the judges comments, it seems a lot gets chopped out in the editing process.
I like Alice and David, but I'm curious to see if Temple can continue to impress.

Posted by DeBeauvoir – August 7, 2006 4:42 PM

Love the show!! David's room was so amazing - I can't believe how great it looked with the pet store items! And how about that "carpet"?? Fabulous! Happy to see Vanessa go - didn't she think highly of herself? And while I'm not crazy about Temple's catty personality, I thought her room was very good.

Posted by Lisa – August 7, 2006 4:41 PM

David's design was awesome. I just wish he would get dressed. He has so much style, yet he dresses like he is at the beach, not on a TV show! If a designer came to my house looking like that, I wouldn't open the door.

Posted by Barbara -- – August 7, 2006 4:28 PM

David rocked! Loved the stacked fish bowls and the "rug". After that showing, he is the one to beat!
It is true that the twins rooms were not good, but they were not worse than Vanessa. Her room was just plain silly with that wig on a head and all of the curlers and beauty supplies lying around. Oh and lets not forget the blow dryer on the wall. You would think a beauty store would sell mirrors that she could have worked into the design -hmmm. So much for seven years experience and all that other stuff she bragged about. "Whatever". Good riddance.

Temple surprised me with her automotive room - very nice use of auto parts. The red and grey color scheme was a little predictable, but I think it was tied for 2nd best with Alice. Alice should have done more to complete the space and not just focused on the back wall. I actually expected more from her.
Donna's room was OK. Her concept was not bad it just seemed a little crowded and sort of thrown together and I agree with Cynthia Rowley that the angled sofa is tiresome not to mention it was all wrong for that space. She did show some creativity with her paint treatment and use of the car jacks for coffee table legs.

I hope that on the group challenges it is more clear to viewers (and judges?) who is responsible for what.

These challenges are very hard in light of the fact the these folks have to do all the work and under a very tight schedule. Most shows at least have one handy man around to help out. How many designers do all of the painting, sewing, building ect? These challenges are not a realistic representation of the design process. But it's fun to watch - I'm hooked.

David is "it"...let's start thinking of a name for his show now!

Posted by Angela – August 7, 2006 4:13 PM

Loved last night show..noticed however, it is going girl, boy, girl and boy to get kicked out..so its supposed to be 2 next week so it will be a girl and a guy ..can't wait to see who will go..but I bet it will be Donna and the other twin

Posted by Peggy – August 7, 2006 3:50 PM

Love the Show. What a great concept. Was so glad Vanessa got thrown off. She took credit for everything good and denied having anything to do with what the judges thought was bad. Certainly not a team player. Pretty sick of Donna and Temple bickering like two 12 year-olds. David is very talented along with Alice but I thought David's room was awesome. His artistic talent has shown through on every show. It's a toss up as to who will win. I love every episode and hope they continue the show after the final of this series.

Posted by Jez Naumann – August 7, 2006 3:49 PM

David's room was most definitely the best, and he does appear to be the one most likely to have his own show and I can see him being very successful at it.
I really think, despite the fact that their independent efforts were weak this time, that the twins should get their own show. It would be original for starters, since they're twins (Potential show names: The Design Duo? One Room By Two? Identical Design?) but also because they seem to come up with such great concepts and finished products when they work together.
As for the others: I agree that Vanessa was the right one to go, partly based on this episode, where her room definitely wasn't up to snuff, and partly because of her attitude - egotistical and attempting to pin blame on others for mistakes that were equally hers. While Temple did a great job on her room, I am both irritated by her frequent references to herself as a single mom who wants to make her boys proud (it's admirable, but to keep repeating it to try and have the judges' sympathy gets annoying) as well as the judges' response to it. I believe that Vern made some remark like "Well, I think you did make your boys proud." Please.
Other than Vanessa and the twins, everyone else did a pretty good job (and yes, the leash in Tym's room was one of the worst of the worst ideas - made me wonder about his extracurricular activities - not something you want to be thinking about with your designer!).

Posted by HGTVFan – August 7, 2006 3:41 PM

Oh, my! What a challenge. I would have freaked and failed, like Donna and Vanessa, I wouldn't have been able to design the space, only decorate it and how? Unfortunately, the show is about DESIGN, not decorating. I felt bad for Temon, he just got stuck on forgetting paint, and with the tape, couldn't get his room past it. Of course, he went because that showed an inability to deal in a tough situation. But, I was sad to see him go. I felt his brother relied too much on his paint too.

But, I was surprised to see Tym (the ultimate planner) standing with them and not Donna. Maybe since Donna wasn't going to go, they decided to give her blood pressure a break by letting her off the chopping block this week. She did show a great inability on her own, without people to boss or control. I suspected that would happen. But, what I finally realized (as with the wine last week) is that she isn't a designer but a decorator, hence the eternal shopping. She was ingenious using the automotive store to decorate the way she did though, so on to next week and hopefully it will be her last!

I expected Alice and David to shine, though David definitely outshined Alice. I was rather confused at the lack of usability of his room. But, it was television friendly. And without teammates, Alice was able to make hers television friendly and unique with her redesign of elements. She does hang back a bit in a group.

Temple was a complete SHOCK! I knew she had good ideas and was being held back, but I didn't realize how far back she was being held! WOW. I'm an auto tech's wife, and I never would have thought of using the parts the way she did. It was sleek, clean and elegant at the same time. Sure, she pulled a sucker punch with the family comment, but that was how she felt. More mothers need to feel that way and say it.

All in all the challenge showed who could design and who couldn't. I'm looking forward to Temple feeling more secure next week, and hope this week doesn't turn David, whose personality not body is a big draw for me, into a Vanessa.

See you next week Clive!!! Would love to be able to break this into paragraphs, but can't figure out how . . . .sorry.

Just a note to say that this is one amazing show. I love it and can't wait for all the future episodes. Whoever thought of this concept of a "design star" is pure genius. Keep it coming! I am a faithful viewer hanging on to every adventure of this series....

Hi, I enjoy the show, such edge of your seat, creativity,I anticipate the next episode. Clive, I so admire you. Excellent concept.I believe the judges to be fair and impartial no matter how much squabbling goes on between the contestants. I don't have a favorite yet,but i'm sure i'll pick one soon. avid fan Theresa

Posted by Theresa – August 7, 2006 2:56 PM

WOW! This is a great show. I think David did his homework. He was the only one who did a plan and stuck with it. That is the reason his room was excellent. One of the most and easiest elements in design is paint. Boy, did a lot of them forget. David and Alice's rooms prove the point. IF Tym had used color, and lost the collar, his would have looked better. I certainly hope that none of Vanessa's future clients read all of this or her "career" is OVER. I don't think Temple should have used the poor me attitude to plead her case. Her room looked pretty good. I love all of the imagination used. The twins did great in the first two shows and I guess they have to have someone back them up to get their ideas in place. Please start lining up the second season. Thanks for an enjoyable hour on the telly.

I've been addicted to HG-tv for some time! All the shows are great, but this one is FANTASTIC because of the anticipation & surprise. PS- I'm 57 years old & I say, David, keep your shirt off. You are HOT!! Really enjoy you, Clive!!

Posted by Linda – August 7, 2006 2:42 PM

Would have loved to have seen Joseph's work. Still think Donna should have gone and Joseph taken her place this week. I'm convinced his work would have rivaled David's. Besides, his thoughts, experience and creativity would be indispensable for the kitchen next week. Glad to see Temple finally got to strut her design stuff. She had good ideas last week but ridiculous Donna wouldn't let her say a thing. I agree that Vanessa had a poor showing with her beauty parlor items.

Posted by AM – August 7, 2006 2:04 PM

This show is AWESOME!!! I absolutely LOVE it! I wish it were on every single night, and I also wish I were on it too!! I LOVE to decorate and I am addicted to HGTV. The challenge last night was so much fun and I love what David did. His room looked 'finished' and fun, and COME ON GUYS...His body is SICK!!! He is so HOT and I feel like I could do my laundry on his abs!! David could get his own show and have his shirt off for the entire hour and I wouldn't get bored watching him watch his paint dry!!!

Posted by Paula – August 7, 2006 2:04 PM

soo glad vanessa is gone. I do not like Temple playing the my children are at home and I am trying to make a better life for them card. I am sure all the contestants have families at home that they want better lives for. I think David did a great job on his room. I also think Donna did a great job with spray paint. She worked with what she had and it turned out good. Tym's room was ok but the chain hanging from the ceiling had to go.

Posted by TAMMY – August 7, 2006 2:02 PM

This week, I was not surprised to see Vanessa go. My whole family watches this show and we all thought she was too arrogant and self-centered. Anyone can glue a blow dryer to the wall.
I felt bad for the twin who got eliminated. His room was better than his brother's. David did a very creative design. We all think he's got one HOT body, but he needs to wear a shirt every once in a while. I was pleasantly surprised at Temple's design-I don't like her as a personality, but she had some very clever ideas. The single mother thing was way cheesy.
Donna's was pretty good with the spray-painted wall, but she needs to be more creative to stand up against David and Temple. Dog Food Boy (Tym) had a merely passable room. If he had gotten rid of the dog collar and "art", it would have been better. Alice was creative with dissecting the bookshelf, and it definitely didn't look like it was all from a camping store. Can't wait for next week's show!

Posted by Ariana – August 7, 2006 1:55 PM

I'm hooked. 2 years ago it was Desperate Housewives, last year was Sopranos. Now this.

Last week, the fighting was so irritating and juvenile. It is difficult to believe Temple and Donna are adults and/or professional. Hard to picture either of them as host to a show, unless they're replacing Martha.

This week, David excelled. Loved his ingenuity. His room should be featured in a magazine. Whether or not he becomes the "Design Star" it is clear he is destined for success either on TV or in private sector.

Posted by May – August 7, 2006 1:50 PM

This is a great show, I'm hooked. Not only do I watch it every week, but I watch the rebroadcasts as well!

David may very well be the next Design Star!

I've learned a lot from the show, it's made me appreciate design a lot more, I especially liked the comment from the judge to Donna about it may have been beneficial that she had no idea what those car parts were for because she could focus on form.

I think this episode was stellar because it got everyone to think outside of their "design box."

When I saw Davids room I knew he was going to win the challenge. My mom was so-o-o glad Vanessa got kicked off and I was to. I didn't understand her room. I just feel bad for the twins, since one got out and one stayed.

I loved Temple's room. It looked great and pretty! She's my girl!

David really has a vision! To be able to visualize how dog chews, fish bowls and hamster litter could become such pleasing sculpture really takes talent. Vanessa was too immature for this show--glad she's gone. I was turned off by Temple from her promo. I think she was confused about what kind of show she was auditioning for. Donna is good at staging, but has to wait until things are already half-way done before she catches on--too little too late. Tym could pull it together and surprise us. Alice is nice--you have to like her--her room was cool, but don't know if she is strong enough to handle her own show. I love the twins. However, they are much better together than they are apart. I miss Joseph. Too bad he wasn't strong enough to stand up to Vanessa. I wish he could have another chance.

Posted by Pat W. – August 7, 2006 12:46 PM

David's room rocked! Temple's room was great, also. I think the twins should get a show together. They are such beautiful people, inside and out, and they need more time than this show allows, but have no doubt that with an hour or an edited 30 minute show, such as Design on a Dime, etc., they could really capture an audience and do some amazing work. I believe they are as creative as anyone. Please consider them for a show as a team, I'd watch it faithfully. (And no, I am not their Mama!) Joseph, by the way, should still be on the show.

Posted by Marian – August 7, 2006 12:30 PM

The third episode was really a thriller, it kept me sitting on the edge of the couch through the entire program. It brought out their individual talents oh so well. David was absolutely fantistic with his design, very very unique...GREAT JOB DAVID.
It is good to have this individuality like this because again they are showing how they would take a customer's ideas and present it as the customer would like rather than AS THE DESIGNER WOULD LIKE IT TO BE {that was Vanessa's problem from day one]
Keep up the good work HGTV and I can hardly wait until episode 4, next Sunday...Ann

Posted by Ann – August 7, 2006 12:19 PM

Like some of the commenters above me, I wasn't the least bit surprised that David's room shone above the rest. Even though the first show was heavily edited, I knew that Vanessa wasn't the only one responsible for those rooms that first week.

Speaking of Vanessa, I'm so glad to see her go. The tackiness of her room was surpassed only by the enormity of her ego.

The big surprise for me was Temple. I loved her color palette, and her room was the second best.

Donna's tschotkes and diagonal sofas, as the judges mentioned, are getting predictable. I hope she's gone soon, I'm so not impressed by her.

I thought Tym's room was totally innovative.

BYE VANESSA!

Posted by Lani – August 7, 2006 12:07 PM

VANESSA IS GONE!!! YES!! I'm glad for the other designers. I've been saying all along you can't trust her, and her arrogance finally got the best of her. However, (and I can't believe I'm saying this!), I do believe her room was better than either of the twins. I really like Teman and Teran, but was a little surprised at their work this week.

Donna is overrated. Her room was alright, but nothing spectacular. Temple was the big surprise. Although there didn't seem to be a lot there, she did a nice job with the materials she bought. My cousin is a mechanic, and she loved the room!

I was surprised about Tym's room. It came out a little better than I was expecting it to when he was talking about it during the show. The leash was a terrible idea though. It kind of made me think it would be something you might find in the house of a dominatrix. It was totally out of place.

Alice's room was very nice. I really liked the green color and how she took apart the bookshelves. I too agree that you could not tell she shopped at a camping store.

Now, granted I'm a little biased towards David, but again agreeing with the judges, his room was clearly far and away the best. His rug turned out better than expected and his fishbowl and doggie treat towers turned out very nice. Loved the color scheme too. I MUST disagree with those who are tired of seeing him shirtless. LOVE IT!! I actually wanted to see a little more of it, but that's just me. What a cutie!

Clive, you're the best!! Like one of the previous bloggers stated, it's great to have you on two hours in a row. You are HGTV's biggest asset! Can't wait for next week!

Posted by Collin – August 7, 2006 12:05 PM

David's design was stellar; I really enjoyed everyone's creativity with this challenge. Not something that a designer would face in the "real" world, but it did show who could think on their feet.

My only disappointment is that two designers were eliminated last episode & apparently the next episode - slow down! One per week is enough drama.

Posted by Jenny – August 7, 2006 12:04 PM

I love this show, it's very interesting to see all the talent and not so much talent. I was sooooo glad when Vanessa went, her attitude was the main problem, but she had such a childish design no one would be interested in that. I was sad to see one of the twins go, but they didn't have their act together on this one. I felt David was by far the best and Temple surprised me with her great design. I don't think Donna will last too much longer. Can't wait for the next eposide!!

Posted by Mel – August 7, 2006 12:03 PM

Hats off to all of them. That was a horribly hard assignment. David is incredibly talented! Amazing room!
Temple, That was wonderful!
I consider myself a pretty good amature designer, but had I been given that task, I would have just freaked and been paralized about it!
Bravo everyone!
Boy, Vern is a hardcore perfectionist! I'm going to go look for some of his stuff and see why.

Posted by Pat – August 7, 2006 12:01 PM

LOVE the show, can't wait to see what happens next. Sooo glad Vanessa is gone she just didn't understand she wasn't the star yet. There's a lot of hidden talent in Temple and if they can quite fighting both her and Donna could produce great work together. I have to say Tym.s work was of the Andy Warhol style and did come off very well, but I was a little disappointed in both of the twins. David's room and Alice's room both showed that they didn't look at their choses of items as what they were but what they could become--great job to all. Love Clive.

Posted by Audrey – August 7, 2006 11:49 AM

I was really impressed by David's artistic abilities, and VERY disappointed in Vanessa-(her bragging all the time about her seven years experience of designing, etc. and her claiming to be so "glamilistic" and excellent.)who needed to shine in this episode. (Well, that didn't work out, did it?) Vanessa is too young to handle this-immature, as well. David and Alice are the best designers, hands down.

Posted by ILUVHGTV – August 7, 2006 11:11 AM

I am a captive of the show. My schedule on Sunday nights revolves around "Design Star". I even got my husband to watch last night (I'm sure he'll watch next week). I was really touched by Cynthia's "heart". When she saw the reaction of the twins saying good-bye it broke her heart, and mine. I was very surprised at how well Temple's room turned out. She might have some talent after all. I think it would have been more fair if they all went to the pet store, or automotive store etc. I think the beauty shop was the hardest and most impossible theme to work with. I can't say I was sad to see Vanessa voted off though because it has always been "all about her". At first I did not like David because he liked himself too much. If he buries his ego I think he will make a great design host.

Posted by Carolyn – August 7, 2006 11:08 AM

David has it all to be a design star! Creativity, Looks, killer smile. He can redo my rooms. I would like to see what he does in a traditional type setting. Great show.

Posted by lupe – August 7, 2006 11:00 AM

I was thrilled with David's success - and it wasn't just a "You did less bad than the others" triumph either. Yay.

In the end, I was glad that it was Vanessa's lack of ability, rather than her poor attitude that got her canned. Funny how that works sometimes...

Posted by Frances – August 7, 2006 10:49 AM

I am glad to see Vanessa go, because I think she is not like out here in your audience. I think the next several shows are going to be amazing. I would have liked a more fair competition, e.g. take all contests to 8 different Pet STores, or 8 different camping stores, and see what each of them could do given the same materials. I think that would be have been far more fair. In some respects, it is the luck of the draw, because if you draw the beauty supply store, there is only so much one can do with potions and wigs. So I think to give them all the same materials and see what happens would be a far better way to judge creativity and ingenuity.

But all in all, it is such a fun show!

Posted by Isabella – August 7, 2006 10:32 AM

I was so thrilled with yesterday's show, as if I was one of the contestants! Definitely, I think David will be the winner, he is great, but it doesn't get to his head, he keeps his feet down to earth. Vanessa on the other hand was always so arrogant, she thought she was all that, but the beauty shop she did, could have been done by any common person, who is not in the designing industry.

Posted by Sonia – August 7, 2006 10:09 AM

I would love to know where they are shopping in New York city.

Posted by Amy – August 7, 2006 9:59 AM

I am so glad Vanessa is gone. Her back-stabbing attitude was so overpowering I could not have enjoyed watching her on a show, no matter how talented she (might) have been.

I was truly sad to see Teman leave. I would have loved a show with both twins. They are some of the few that leave strong negative personality traits aside, which is smart since we are voting in the end who we want to watch on a series. If I wanted to watch fighting and negativism, I would watch prime-time talk shows, which is why I only watch HGTV, to avoid that stuff!!

My 8-year-old and I love this show and have fun picking our favorites and guessing who will be cut next. I like Alice, David, and Teran best.

I thought last nights episode was so much fun! What an interesting challenge...who comes up with these ideas? I can't wait for next week.
I've never been a big fan of reality shows but this one is so well done! And could David be any cuter...his room was so creative! We love you Clive...keep up the great work!

Thank goodness Vanessa is gone. Very sorry to see Joseph go, I think he had potential. I don't think either the kitchen or the living rooms were all that great and since you had them working as teams, I think that should have been a big consideration and either Donna or Temple should have gone. Perferably Donna. Temples' room was really nice this week. I love Alice and thought her room was really great! Keep it up Alice! Why can't Dave seem to keep his clothes on? He can get by on his talent, I don't think we need to see his body every week.

Posted by Connie – August 7, 2006 9:30 AM

Once again I see lack of planning and also many but not all tended to use the store that they shopped at as the theme for there room. However there were a few who thought outside of the box and made there shopping spree into an art and true decorating trip thinking out side of the box. I never heard it said that if you shopped at a beauty store you had to do a hair salon room same with the automotive. I still would like to see more planning and budgeting along with people skills. I did not really see anyone asking for help and or advice from any of the store employees who would have been a bit more knowledagable on what they had to offer and where they could get there best bang for the bucks. Also how many forgot to budget there money for there wall color forcing them to have to spend more time and resource for wall color or lack of wall color. A simply easy design element forgotten using time and energies that could have been better used else where. There were a few that did shine. But more that showed lack of imagination, budgeting skills, and people and/or communication skills. They need to think outside of the box, use there resources, and realize that there are resources available that they are not incoperating. Also when not in a team the members are beginning to show there weaknesses. They need to step up to the plate and realize that the responsibility does not lie only in one area but through out the entire design which includes, design, building hands on, budgeting, people skills, imagination, and the ability to communicate there thoughts as well as there needs. Rethink there resources use them wisely and move it.

I thought the judges were pretty much on the money with this one. David, Temple and Tym had the most interesting (and finished) rooms, in my opinion. As much as I don't care for either Vanessa's personality or design style, however, I thought the brothers' rooms were just awful. Can't say I was sad to see Vanessa leave, though. I was most surprised by Temple in this challenge... and David's room really was "a rock star effort."

Thank goodness Ms. "I have 7 years of design experience" is gone. She took credit for David's art in episode one, contributed an ugly couch in episode two, and created the ultimate tribute to the glue gun in episode three. Do we get to watch some DESIGN now?

P.S. Dang, David looks good without a shirt. Is there a "Naked Designer" show in the works?

Posted by Debi – August 7, 2006 8:56 AM

This was the best week yet. We actually got to see individual abilities.
David with his fodder floor rug certinly put his design together best and deserved top spot. I had a feeling he would shine.
I was particularly interested in seeing what Ms. Utah had in mind, and she did not dissappoint. I was wondering what she was capable of, and now I know she can carry off some good creativity. I admit she was a real question mark in my mind until this episode.
The two that went tonight was not a surprise, and I think Venessa's room showed a destinct lack on creativity and imagination. Anyone can glue cwap on the walls and furniture. I think she pulled a Ramona with the beauty products. NOT sad to see her go.
It was rather sad to see one of the twins go. His efforts were sadly lacking. I think he hung himself by taking too much and having too much trouble painting his walls dark blue. The only thing that was kind of neat was the circles on the back wall. He simply ran out of time to do what he needed to do. I wouldn't even have tried to lable that room Victorian in any way shape or form.
Our little brunette gal(names are escaping me), did a very commendable job on her room. I knew there was going to be some tallent showing once she got away from Vanessa and Donna.
Speaking of Donna, I think she looked out of her element. Gee, she didn't have control over anyone, couldn't spend all her time shopping, and had only her own money to spend.
The twin going on to the next project will have to really shine if he wants to stay in the running.
From what I have seen so far in the way of ability and personalities, David and our little brunette show the most promise so far. Time will tell.
Next week should be very interesting, since I got the impression that they all will be working on one room. I expect to see the two blonds going at one another again. Their clashes will kill them off if they don't cool their jets with one another. Personality is right up there with ability. Having your own show means you better have a healthy amount of viewer appeal.

Last night's show was an excellent challenge, really showed who was creative. I would have loved to see what Joseph would have done with one of those rooms. He really wasn't the problem, Vanessa was and I am relieved to see her go. Her room last night looked like an 8 year old did it. One of the worse actually. While I didn't like Tym's room, it wasn't that bad. I think most of the designers were shaken by the task although David rallied. He admitted to not having pets and never having been in a pet store, but his room was brillant. I wasn't sure about him after the kitchen of the night before. That was aweful. But on his own room he shined. The behavior of both Donna and Temple... Donna ought to know better at her age and having experience in the service industry. I expect her to handle people better. It is obvious Donna is used to being "Queen" in her household and at work. She wasn't going to budge an inch for Temple. It would have shown better leadership on Donna's part if she had listened to Temple's ideas instead of brushing her off. It was clear Donna dismissed Temple. Unfortunately Temple chose to fight back making her behaviour no better than Donna's. I sincerely hope HGTV isn't going to keep either one of these women just because the camera loves them. Neither are particularly like-able. Alice would be a better choice. She is like-able, a team player, and beautiful. The twins are fun and like-able, but I don't think they can work without each other. They are better as a team, as most twins seem to be. You couldn't hire just one. Tym would probably better with a partner too. He is handy but doesn't yet seem to be able to pull it all together.

I just want to comment how much I am enjoying this Designer Star series. I wish it was on nightly and not just once a week. I sure do look forward for upcoming episodes. As usual HGTV is the best!

Posted by Cheri Hall – August 7, 2006 8:42 AM

I LIKE THE SHOW! But I suffer with the designers, as who hasn't failed at some competition. They are so seriously competing and each rejection is so hard as their dreams crash.

Posted by Mona – August 7, 2006 8:06 AM

I thought that Donna's design was weaker than either of the two eliminated. She's been a weak link all along and doesn't show much imagination. I thought that Teran's (the one with the tape) design used elements imaginatively and the overall room looked better, even though less was altered. Was the standard only how drastically the basic elements were altered? I thought that Tym's room, while wanting to be imaginative, was less put together than Vanessa's. I didn't like how she accessorized, but I thought the paint and arrangment in hers was professional and made sense. It makes me sad to see those two eliminated. I thought that David, Alice and Temple did the strong designs this week. I don't like Temple's manner and certainly hope that she isn't the one finally chosen, but her eye was good and the design sense with all of them was strong. I think that David and Alice show good signs of being able to work independently, work as part of a team, show a spirit independent of the structure but able to work within constraints and those are all desirable qualities.

Posted by Terry – August 7, 2006 4:08 AM

This was the best show so far--we really got to see each designer's ideas and execution. And I agree with the judges' decisions about the top designs and the ones who left. It was especially great to see what Alice and Temple could do, when they weren't distracted by disfunctional teams.

Posted by Carrie – August 7, 2006 3:34 AM

I loved Temple's classic, yet elegant automotive themed room, definately very talented. I want to use some of her ideas for my sons room. David's was a fun space, just not functional...more usable ideas would have been appreciated, but again very talented.

Posted by Claudia – August 7, 2006 3:09 AM

They let the wrong twin go! I think the judges were confused

Posted by Greg – August 7, 2006 3:09 AM

Donna & Temple need to grow up.
and, though his audition wasn't too great and i'm surprised it got him in, I think David's show will be something to watch.

Posted by J – August 7, 2006 2:33 AM

This episode ended emotional with the seperation of the brothers, but the challenge, was excellent.
Each Designer was accountable, using their own talent, and imagination...
I enter a store now with a different eye, like how I could use that kitty-litter, hub-cap, or dumb-bell as a center piece...

Posted by Gail – August 7, 2006 2:30 AM

I think the beauty supply store offered the least options for designing a room. Both the worst and a next to worst room were from that store. The other stores at least had larger objects that could be manipulated. I could almost feel sorry for the two who pulled it. However, Vanessa showed no ideas at all and for me it was a toss-up between Teman and Teran - both were very poor. This time I certainly had no disagreements with the judges.

Posted by Patricia – August 7, 2006 2:28 AM

When are they going to stop wasting Temple's time and tell her to go home? Are they only keeping her to add tension to the show? Her attitude to the other designers shows she will be a pain for her staff to work with, her solo effort was blah, and her explanation of her design was cheesy! I can't imagine anyone watching her show, unless they are related to her.

Posted by MC – August 7, 2006 2:27 AM

I was delighted that Vanessa was sent home this week. I can't imagine tuning in every week to watch a show featuring her. She seemed all along to really just want to show everyone how cool she could be personally and doesn't seem to have the maturity to relate design skills to what a client would need. Vanessa really just wants to be a "STAR" and not really so much a designer, and I would think she'd approach every project as a teenager decorating her own bedroom.

David clearly deserved to be declared the winner here. I've loved everything he's come up with so far, and I think he has the personality to carry a show of his own, too.

Posted by Emily – August 7, 2006 1:28 AM

Honestly Tym should have been canceled, no one in their right mind would put framed dog food labels on the walls as art.

Posted by Ross – August 7, 2006 1:15 AM

I am truly relieved that Vanessa is out of the competition, her design style might work for 11 or 13 year-old girls, but I don't think anyone else would really want that in their home or office. I am very interested to see how the rest of the competition will go, I can't wait for next week!

Posted by Luriena – August 7, 2006 1:13 AM

I was glad to see Vanessa go - good riddance! I was surprised to see the twins do so poorly, and was sad to see one of them go and the other left standing there in tears. But design is what it's all about, and neither one of them did anything special. If Vanessa hadn't done such an amateurish and silly design, I think both of them would have been eliminated.

David, on the other hand, is awesome! Who would have thought of making a rug out of reptile bedding! He has a real sense of style and originality. Plus, he seems to have a good sense of humor so I think he'd make a really good host for a show.

Temple surprised me - she has more talent than I would have suspected, but I think Donna is still walking the edge. She seems a little clueless when it comes to original thinking, although she seems to do fine with more traditional designs. I'm looking forward to watching the cat fights between these two!

Alice and Tym both have talent, and I'd probably watch a show with one of them as host, but quite frankly I don't think they're going to make it, especially if they have to go up against David. He rocks!

Love Clive, and love Vern - give that man a show!

Posted by Patty – August 7, 2006 1:00 AM

I hate reality shows--never watched any of them more than 5 min. (boring!) Until this one! I love your show and want to know if "Design Star II" is in the works. Please don't tell me "No!"

Posted by Nancy DeLisle – August 7, 2006 12:49 AM

I thought David's room was awesome! Temple finally got to show her stuff. I thought her room was very sharp. Alice made some good decisions, breaking things apart, and she's right, you couldn't tell that she had shopped in a camping store. I liked Tym's ideas. It turned out better than I had expected. I was glad to see Vanessa go. Her attitude, immaturity, despite her training, really made her not deserve the win. I was disappointed in her work. The first room she did, while taking a lot of the credit, was great. I started to not like her and her work last week. The twins really do work well together. I'm thinking that the challenge to shop at specialty stores kept them from showing their best work. Donna did okay. You could tell that this was not her comfort zone, yet it wasn't as bad as some of the rooms. I teach Interior Design at a high school. I learn something new every year that I teach. I really understand Temple's approach with no formal training. I have an interest and the education, but no formal work experience. Watching this show has given me ideas to use in the classroom. Keep it going. I wish we didn't have to wait a whole week.

David needs to keep his shirt on ! He should be judged on talent not his body .He must not have confidence in his designs and think he needs to show off to get noticed! I like Alice but she needs alitttle more confidence and break out of her shell. Tim is good. Temple and Donna need to stop arguing.

Posted by Connie Scott – August 6, 2006 11:34 PM

Wow, what a show! We were glad to see Vanessa go, although she has talent, her arrogance and lack of respect for teammates made us sick.
David totally rocked, what a fabulous idea to make a rug out of pet bedding...

My entire family is hopelessly hooked on this show, even my ultra conservative, non-tv-watching husband! You've got a winner in this show! Rock on, Clive!

Posted by Donna – August 6, 2006 11:33 PM

So very glad Vanessa is gone! I can't even begin to express just how much! I agreed with the judges' opinions of her room; I'd made similar comments to my DH as we watched the program. So much potential at the beauty store, but she was so caught up in her own thing that she didn't see the raw materials as raw materials for design.

However, I didn't think David's room was the work of genius that the judges did. Of course, I suppose it depends on the criteria you're using to judge -- is this a space where someone could actually live or even spend an hour or two; or was it just supposed to look "pretty" or "cool"? Because, if it was supposed to be the former, then, in my opinion, he failed miserably. After all, how long would a rug made of mulch stand up? What's the value of a doggy chew-treat "sculpture"? And how practical is it to create dual towers of glass fish bowls? Isn't someone worried that would fall over...?

I thought that Alice, Tym, and -- surprisingly -- Donna showed the most creativity. They looked at items found in those unlikely stores and thought about how they could be used for design. They even re-designed the original pieces in the room. This wasn't really the case with the rest of them... Sure, Tym didn't paint, but given that he did a "gallery-style" space, I thought the white walls worked. And, frankly, I thought his space appeared more cool and inviting than David's. Certainly a room I could've spent time in. I did like some of the ideas in Temple's room, but I don't think she went far enough with finding creative uses for the pieces already furnished in the room.

Finally, I was embarrassed for the camping twin. His room was a complete mess... The sad thing is, a good designer can make a thing of beauty from unlikely sources. At that, he failed miserably.

Posted by elaine – August 6, 2006 11:25 PM

Interesting show, there should have been at least 4 designers leaving the show instead of just 2. The challenge was interesting, although I think they could have done much better. I though Dave and Alice's rooms were the best. Temple's room was ok, the story about her son's and their Dad being a mechanic was lame-o. I can't believe the one judge bought into it. Having Vanessa bragging on how great her design was and having the judges think it was crappy was great, I think they were just getting as sick of her as we were.

Posted by Cindy – August 6, 2006 11:23 PM

I loved tonight's episode. The two designers with the worst rooms were eliminated, although I hated to see the twin go. However, I was happy to see Vanessa go. I watch each rerun of the show and look forward to next Sunday. This is a great show. I think tonight the best man really won.

Posted by Cosmicgirl – August 6, 2006 11:14 PM

After viewing Episode 3 the choice is clear to me who should get their own show (But I don't wanna ruin it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet). Despite my current opinion I'm still lookig forwrd to seeing the next round of challenges.

This show is awesome, thank you & HGTV for bringing it into my home every week. This program brings out the design star in me (at home).

Posted by Eva – August 6, 2006 11:10 PM

It was very obvious this time who the winner and loosers were. David did a fantastic job! It was time for Vanessa to go. She took her beauty items too literally and used no imagination with them--way too girly. It was a toss up as to which twin was the looser. Temple was a real surprise! Donna's room was very mediocre. I enjoyed seeing their individual work. Good show.

Posted by Nancy – August 6, 2006 11:07 PM

I thought this week's challenge was great - it really put everyone on the spot and it shook the tree a little harder to see who can think creatively on their feet.

When David isn't wasting time refereeing and can concentrate on a project, he excels, as demonstrated this week. That rug, although not practical, was ingenious! I also felt he was the only one who delivered an entire room.

I also wasn't surprised to see Vanessa go. Her ego finally got her.

The surprise of the week for me was Temple. She delivered a solid themed room but playing the single mom card again is getting old. That may get her to the next round but I think her "shows" are numbered. What bothers me most is that the commercials say 10 "professional" designers and she makes it a point each week to say she isn't one. So... why is she still here?

I still don't see Donna's talent. Her room seemed disconnected and I have yet to see all those years of experience come out. All I know for sure is that she's a shopper except when it comes to automotive stores!

Tym's room was creative. I thought using the dog food bags was a clever way to get color on the walls, but I have to agree with the leash. It looked more like a doggie noose to me! I also think the judges were a little too harsh on him this week.

Posted by dd – August 6, 2006 11:07 PM

I am SOOOO glad to see Vanessa is GONE!!! Her room tonight along with her scheming and conniving in the first two episodes finally sealed the deal. Her effort tonight was pitiful and she was so confident that she "had it in the bag". Well the only bag I see is the one bagged her from the show. BRAVO to the judges!!!! My money is on David. His room was FANTASTIC tonight! He has shown all along that he is truly a talent and a good person. Enough with the shirt off and showing his body all the time though. The show is about design, not fitness. Other than that, I think he is the best so far.

Posted by Michael Baessler – August 6, 2006 11:02 PM

I have seen all the episodes so far and every episode gets even more interesting. 1st episode, ramona had to go. You can't say that the style is personal to a "customer" and expect them to even hire you! It's all about the customer!
2nd episode: Yeah the arguing was very annoying and i'm sorry to see joseph go but he really shouldn't look at it as a total loss. What he's gained is "exposure". Many people now have seen his work and how much talent he really has and he can use that to boost his own business and gain more clientelle. HGTV may say he isn't a design star but in his local town for those who watched, he is a design star to them.
Now for episode number three: Despite all the arguing and back stabbing in part 2 everyone has shown their true colors. Noone could say I didn't do it, not even Vanessa!! I'm actually shocked that she got eliminated but at the same time i'm glad. She was too cocky but she didnt understand the whole concept of the project. I'm really sorry to see one of the twins go :( I liked them together. David is actually my favorite because hes smart, talented and not to mention good looking :) But his room was really awsome! Of course I can't forget Clive, my favorite host, gotta love him!! Can't wait to see next weeks episode!

Posted by Danielle – August 6, 2006 11:01 PM

Tonight I agree with the judges' decision on who was eliminated. David's area rug out of cedar chips was amazing. Why didn't I think of that for a room when my boys had their many hamsters?
But David can leave his shirt on. Not that he's not built and handsome but the flaunt can go. Clever having to buy supplies at non home improvement stores. Next week's show with all of them doing a kitchen should have some fireworks. As always, great to see Clive. I love the two hours back to back of the 2 Designed to Sell shows and then Design Star!

Posted by Debby – August 6, 2006 10:50 PM

This is the first week when I've really seen some GREAT design! I can't wait for next week.

I really felt for the 2 who left tonight....they obviously are extremely talented, but only 1 can win in the end.

Keep up the great work, HGTV.

Sincerely,
Your BIGGEST fan!:)

I wasn't surprised. The best man won this one!

Posted by Debra Niesen – August 6, 2006 10:43 PM

I think David is the BEST! This episode really showed who really has vision and talent. I was soooo disappointed in both the twins. I'm glad Vanessa left, she was just too cocky for her own good, I don't think she "GOT IT". But Temple is my girl I am so proud of her.

It was amazing to see how talented some of the designers were when given very stringent paramenters. They had to almost think on their feet as they began shopping for items in a one hour spree to transform their rooms. I really agreed with the judges totally this time. The two chosen to leave should have been. For having 7 years experience, Vanessa left alot to be desired, especially in imagination. Perhaps she just doesn't do well under pressure. As far as Temon's room, it just wasn't up to snuff, not for a designer who should have his own show. Unfortunately, it really did not resemble his vision. Felt bad for him because he was a hard worker on the other 2 episodes and was easy to get along with. Next week's episode should prove to be very interesting!!

Posted by Karen – August 6, 2006 10:28 PM

Please tell David to put on a shirt!

Posted by Beth – August 6, 2006 10:23 PM

I am loving the show!! I think the judges have been right on for the most part. Vanessa's room was weak, but it was better than the other twin's room. I thought they should have both gone out this week. I am hooked on the show and its clever concept. You have found the perfect judges and host. Will there be a season two? How will people try out?
Thanks,
Karen

Posted by Karen – August 6, 2006 10:15 PM

I KNEW it would be david that came out on top in this competition. i feel as if the entire reason vanessa won the first challenge was due to david's artwork and vision that vanessa passed off as her own.

david is the only choice for design star.
