Design Star

Episode 5: Now You're Talking!

Posted by – August 20, 2006 8:53 PM

The end of last week was a high point for me — being able to tell the designers that their work will stand alone from here on out!

I have to say I am still a little sad I didn't get a note from Temple last week but, oh well. And many of you were concerned about our homeowners' kitchen... rest assured we sent a crew in to finish the project! Now on to this week's challenge! The designers were thrilled to not only be working on their own concepts, but given just a single color as a stepping off point really left them to their own devices. I think they all loved it!

My favorite part of the challenges is usually my check-in, since it's a time when I get to see not only what they've accomplished under extremely difficult circumstances (these are called challenges, after all) but we also get to see more of their individual personalities shining through. They all have different strengths, and each could bring something unique to their own TV show.

The check-in was especially interesting this week, since I got to drop a little surprise on them. Now they have to present their finished design to the viewers as if hosting a show — ta dah! They each reacted positively, but everyone was still really nervous. After all, this is not only about being a good designer but being able to communicate to HGTV viewers. It was definitely time to see how they measured up in that area and it will be interesting to see how they grow (hint...there's more to come next week). I think they all did really well in their hosting turns, especially for their first time. It's not easy, particularly with so much at stake.

Things are getting quite tense as we approach the end of the journey. The stakes just keep getting higher and higher as they get closer to realizing their dream. Everyone that's made it this far has qualities that truly make them worthy of the title, HGTV's Design Star. It will be interesting to see who can rise above the others and stand out. I hope you watch closely, since you will have the final say!

And one final note: I want to thank everyone who reads this blog and writes such encouraging messages. I continue to be touched by your enthusiasm and support, and am glad to do shows that you seem to enjoy so much. I hope you keep watching as the best is yet to come! Next week's episode is not to be missed (can't say much more than that).

Cheers!

I loved every show - wow!!

A few suggestions for next season.

1. Give the designers more professional help. Who knows, maybe they don't know how to work with them, and we/you could see this.

2. Have us vote each week, show the ones that got the least votes (say the bottom 3) and then the judges get to pick which one leaves.

3. Give the designers more time to explain there work.

4. Give the designers more time, I'm sure in TV land, you get more that 16 hrs to find out what the project is, plan, shop, build, install and fine tune.

5. Show portfolio's of there work before the shop, or at least info on why they got choicen.

6. Finally link the voting to emails, not the computor, I share a computor with alot of people and we could only vote from it once a day. We had to have a vote on who got to vote!!

great show, there were some real egos on the show ...speaking of temple and donna, but glad were down to the final two, hope david wins...good luck!

Clive, First off, well done! You kept this contest fair, objective and entertaining. I was happy to see the bold challenges set before each of the challengers. I have to say that I am torn between David and Alice. I love David's contemporary designs, his brilliant compositions and his eye for art. I also love Alice's ease with people, her flexibility and her openness to other's opinions. She is so talented and humble. They are both so very very talented that I would be happy to see either one win! Good luck to both!

Thank God Temple is gone. She seemed fake and used her tears to make people feel sorry for her. Donna was protrayed as her foe but I think Donna was very classy in the way she handled Temple's attacks. Temple is inmature and caused a lot of grief on the show. She should have been kicked out on the second show.

Love the show - Love Clive! DTS is one of my favorite HGTV shows (imagine my surprise when I found out that Lisa LaPorta was the design coordinator on Michael Paine's Designing for the Sexes) - and when I win the lotto I'm hiring Vern and Candace Olson to decorate my new home :)

As for Design Star - I unfortunately missed the first episode - so I didn't see Ramona...I've got to try and catch it in re-runs, and I missed the kitchen debacle. I really liked Temple - I liked the apartment she did in yellow and I always root for the underdog. The fact that she wasn't "trained" made me like her all the more. I am glad that David and Alice are the final two even though it makes it extremely difficult to choose - both have great presence and style and even though in h beginning I didn't think that I would like David - he has definately grown on me. I think the best idea I have seen in all of the blogs has been a joint show with both of them, because they work so well together.

Anyway - keep up the good work. I love all the shows on HGTV.

I agree with so many others, that the two remaining "stars" should have a show together. They are great. I will miss whoever does not win.

David's designs show alot of originality, Alice's people skills show a lot of heart! It will be difficult to decide between the two. I would love to have David work on my outdoor Tiki Bar!

I am just glad Temple is gone.

In response to "Gloria" who posted the question about who was right (Temple or Tym) regarding hanging cabinets. Tym was right. Temple has no idea what is involved in hanging -even 'ready made' kitchen cabinets! even if they are ready to hang , there is a process for getting them to hang properly and "match" up. it may sound like it's nothing but ask any kitchen cabinet installer and they will tell you it doesn't take "just a second" to do it. Tym was correct on this one.

Posted by Jkarrow – August 30, 2006 11:54 AM

YES, David AND Alice co-hosting would be a great idea!

I also feel that the contestants were not able to shine when they had to work in a team so soon. I think individual rooms for at least the first challenge would have been better. Its hard to see someones style when they are forced to work with a team that may or may not share their vision. Obviously they will have to work in a team later, but for the competiton we need to first see what their individual vision is.

I liked Tym but hated his hair. I hope he gets a makeover.

I have to say also that while I like David overall, I felt that it was wrong to not "mark him down" for doing a "rug" from animal bedding. it may have looked good (it did look good) but it is NOT useable!! so in "real life" it would not have been a good design.

I propose a twist ending: David and Alice get to co-host their show!
They are both talented and adorable, and something about each complements the other. I'd just hate to see either one of these two lose.
HGTV, you've already found your TWO new Design Stars!

I have ben watching all week, and"Alice" has shown me the best of designs. She works well with others and she has such a charming personality I would love to watch a show in which she was the host and designer,I would welcome her to come and design my kitchen any day.David needs to try different approches twards implementing his designs, they all look alike, and I wouldn't watch his show because it would remind me of re runs all the time, and the "Hippi" remark "Peace"!
Alice is it in my book, show them Alice.
best of luck to Alice, the next; "Design Star"

I love Vern Yip and wish he was still Trading Spaces. He produced some marvelous designs that I would have liked to have in my own home if I had the same types of rooms. He made an interesting comment, though, about the use of red in regards to David's studio design. He applauded David's use of red in the room and he said that if you really tried to exist in a red room, 24/7, it would drive you up a wall. I distinctly remember two of Vern's early Trading Spaces rooms that were red or a derivative of it in design. One was a living room...the ceiling and walls were a glossy lipstick red, which exposed flaws in this older home's surfaces. The space was also dark and oppressive, even under the scrutiny of TV lighting. In this case, the homeowner did not seem to be too happy with the space. The other was a kitchen...the top half of the cabinetry was done in deep orange and the bottom half of the cabinetry was done in lipstick red; the walls were lipstick red as well. In this case, the wife loved it but she said she loved contemporary design and lots of color so the design fit her personality to a tee. The husband seemed less pleased but not unhappy. I think red has its place such as in David's focal point design, in a room with little wall space or in a powder room for drama. I think Vern's early experiences have probably shaped his opinions of today. I've seen pictures of his own space in a magazine layout and he has wonderful taste. I just read that there will be another designstar challenge in the future and I hope Vern will be on board once again.

I loved Temple's idea of the bed/sofa, and I liked her design. Just wish she had used more colors in addition to yellow.
I really liked David's colors, did not like way he had segregated tv area from the rest of the space. Think David is really good designer.
Why didn't anyone use drapes to hide bed? Tym was close to that.
Loved Alice, Tym and David presentation.

Posted by Nanette – August 27, 2006 9:19 PM

Of all 10 of the designers, I really only like Temples and Davids designs. I would never be able to get along with Donna, she thinks she is the only one that knows anything. Ramona only wanted to design with trash, I did not anything she had to design, I was glad she was taken out on the first show. The only ones I would have to design for me would be Temple or David, I believe that either one of them deserve to get their own show on tv. I would watch it all the time. Thank you for letting me express myself, about you tv show.

Clive,

A few thoughts for future shows:

1). I would love to see the designers get more time (and technical help) for their projects. Sleep is a good thing.

2). I would love to see the contrast between the viewers' votes and the judges' votes for each project. Perhaps unable to be viewed during the actual episode, it would still be fascinating to see as a follow-up. Viewer participation is a good thing.

3). I'd love to see a small portfolio presentation from each designer before the competition begins. Exposition is a good thing.

4). Clive, you are a good thing. Keep smiling! If you want to re-do a mess of a small galley NYC kitchen on any of your venues, I am up for the challenge!! Working kitchens are a good thing.

I have to say that even though I really like Alice, I did lose some respect for her when she implied that if Joe went, the whole team would have to go, and then minutes later, she did not keep her word. That said, I still think she could get the job done if she wins. Tym presents well, but I would not chose his designs for my home. David has an creative eye, but he's not very practical and doesn't present very well. Although I know a lot of people didn't like Temple, I really liked her. I thought she was an extremely hard worker, put things together in a livable and attractive way, and I found her quite likable. I did not feel put off or threatened by her looks, and I could definitely feel for her since she is a parent who was separated from her children.

p.s. Clive, you are hilarious and I wish you were a designer (or maybe you are?) because I would love to watch *your* show too!

Love the show, lots of personalities lots of ideas. David is too stuck on himself. Alice is like a breath of fresh air. I would watch any show Alice hosted.

Thanks so much for a great reality tv show! I can't stand the genre usually, but I'm a total HGTV and interior design nut. I'm also learning a lot about interpersonal skills and how to give critical feedback - useful in my own life! And thankfully I won't have to learn the lessons on national TV! Your judges are stupendous, especially doing it with the cameras rolling. Each has his or her own style. I appreciate their honesty and frankness. They are doing the designers a favor by being truthful with them. That's something they can take with them even if they don't become the next HGTV Design Star.

I am happy the three finalists are who they are. I really like them all. David has a strong design talent and seems to be a natural on camera (moreso in the interviews than his overly speedy presentation last week). I do wonder if he will be successful in executing a design style not his own. Could he pull off a traditional room? Or country? I would think that kind of flexibility would be helpful. He would be fun to watch.

Alice seems the most well rounded. She clearly is a pleasant person to work with, and knows how much of the success of her final outcome is based on the work of her team. (Good for you, Alice!) In that respect she reminds me of Candice Olson (love her!). However, Alice would need some voice coaching to even out her pitch. The comfort level would come with practice, I'm sure. She has a very good eye, flexible design style, and good business sense. I wish she had more confidence. She is really good!

I really like Tym too. He is bold, if a little rough around the edges. I think he would grow well into the position, once he got used to the flow of the work. He's got all the raw materials - great eye, skills, seems nice, comfortable on camera, interesting quirky look (thank goodess they got rid of the snotty beauty queen). His experience led him to understand that sometimes time is more of an issue than budget - he astutely caught the "catch" in that week's assignment. He also generously shared that knowledge with others, which I think is to his credit. A cut-throat type person wouldn't have done that.

Can't wait for tonight's show! Regardless of who wins, I think they will deserve it and I am looking forward to adding it to my HGTV repertoire!

Thanks for the summer fun, HGTV!

Clive: My family is on notice: Sunday nights from 9-10 are mine!! I look forward to each episode every week. I generally hate ALL reality shows and their much heralded back-biting animality. To me, they symbolize how low the American mind-set has sunk. But this show is different. I see true human compassion amongst the players, the judges, and [you Clive] the host. Please keep that aspect of the show alive--at all costs!

Clive, it is heartbreaking to watch you inform each candidate, "Your show has been cancelled." I see the sorrow in your eyes and hear it in your voice. The judges are kind as well. I appreciate how they always discuss each candidate's strengths before anything else. Good for all of you! I wouldn't mind seeing more of that humanity. Human kindness is something rarely modeled in today's world.

I also agree with a past writer: I would love to see Dave and Alice co-host a show. I cannot decide between them. They are both extremely talented and their strengths would complement each other.

I hope you keep this show going, but how will that work? Will each "Design Star" get his/her own show for one year? I think that could work very nicely and launch careers for many talented people.

Posted by Patti – August 27, 2006 4:40 PM

I think David's designs are sooooooooooo superior to the other contestants. His talent shines through each week. I really hope he wins the competition.

You are a positive comrade to these souls, they are doubting themselves, under stress and not in their comfort zones but they can count on you to be a fair and kind friend-mentor.

I am writing to say that and this:
When Tym and Temple had a difference of thought pertaining to the hanging of the kitchen cabinets
in the couple´s kitchen, I still wonder who ia accurate?
Temple said the cabinets were one piece and it was like hanging a shelf only it had to be secure on the wall because it would be heavy.
(As I think when seeing premade cabinets that areone piece)
Tym said it was much more complicated -like he was going to fabircate them from scratch.

The latter would have been asking the team too much but not the first-buying and hanging a ready made cabinet.

Why didn´t the panel address this logistical question -not only for the participants learning but for ours. I would have liked an experts opinion on this for all to hear.

BTW This show is lots of fun and I enjoy it!!!!
From a non-TV viewing person that is quite a compliment!

Don't think Temple should be gone. I do understand the judges have more experience than myself, but I just think she could have been the Next Star. She had natural talent and with the judges helping her she would have continued to shine. I like you because you seem natural, I seen that in Temple. Well, look forward to tonight. Good luck to all.

I was truly amazed that none of the designers thought to construct a platform bed, especially with a skilled carpenter at their disposal! They could have used the space beneath for a desk area and had much more room for the living/dining area. Don't they watch HGTV?

Posted by Barbara Jean – August 27, 2006 11:43 AM

Hi All, A very exciting show! I honestly would never watch the remaining three on a show of their own, but has been mentioned earlier in the blog that David & Alice would be good as co-hosting. I felt that way also except I at this point it would be more exciting to being Tym into the picture. The three of them are all so much fun in their very special ways! Their diversity, in design and wonderful personalities is key to a very exciting and fun program on HGTV. As one, not interesting but united they totally stand!!! This is one great program! Keep up the good work HGTV!! Sincerely, Dianne in the beautiful Carmel by the Sea, CA

While I am not a "Temple fan", I just cannot see what the judges and everyone else see in Tym - I must be missing something. I know one thing I missed was the show Sunday night, so I watched it tonight instead. I noticed that the judges were verbally most critical of Tym and much more positive with Temple. Even knowing she was out, I was surprised to see that she was eliminated after listening to the comments by the judges. ( I would have eliminated Tym solely on the basis of the sickening green bed comforter he choose, and I don't care what color was in his paint can!) Plus, I'm still upset by last week's show. Temple had a lovely plan, which the homeowner's chose. Tym and Donna just plain refused to go along with her plan, and kept arguing it "couldn't be done". They were reluctant to be part of the team. My husband and I do a LOT of home improvement stuff, including cabinetry. While the team probably couldn't have gotten the cabinetry scribed and leveled properly in the time alotted with their skill level, they could certainly have installed them. It certainly is easier to install new cabinets than to PAINT them if there are time constraints!! If the team had worked together instead of working against Temple, they would have done better. With the budget they had, there was plenty of money and time to carry off Temple's plan with 7 supposedly competent adults. I didn't think Temple was treated fairly on that show, nor on this one. Plus, Tym is always bragging up his building skills, except in that show, where he kept saying, "this can't be done, etc." It's always interesting to see what part sexism plays in shows like this, because, intuitively, most men and women have trouble following a woman's lead unless there's a long-developed relationship and trust. (Designed to Sell is a great example of this - except who knows if the ideas are really Lisa LaPorta's or someone else's- I assume they're hers because I've been following her since her stints on "Designing for the Sexes"?) Then, of course, it's the woman's "fault" when her lead isn't followed. I thought the kitchen make-over show was a great example of that dynamic. I also think if Tym had done Temple's room and Temple had done Tym's room, the judges would have dismissed Temple anyway. I thought personality came into play. I guess, though, that's fair, since whomever is chosen will be hosting a show. This show is worth watching, though. It's the first "reality" show I've ever watched. It doesn't begin to compare to Designed to Sell, or Redesign, my two favorite HGTV shows. Design Star is more in the line of Designer Finals, which I usually don't watch because the outside parameters are so silly. (Let's give some new designers a final assignment to give them a taste of the "real world": you have 50 bucks and 4 hours to make major improvements in a home after being allowed to look at it for 3 minutes. That's realistic!! Every designer I've ever known certainly works that way!)

Posted by Ann – August 27, 2006 12:37 AM

I love the show! I can't wait for Sunday evenings - I will hate to see the program conclude! There was never a single room that Vern designed on Trading Spaces that I didn't love so his critiques are so credible!

Clive, you're sweet - you have a streak of mischief! Your humor is welcomed!

I was so glad to see Temple go! Wow! Was she in love with herself or WHAT? She was so arrogant with a superiority complex! Alice is my favorite - she has such a sweet spirit with no backbiting, sniping when Temple was having it out with almost everyone but Alice!

Tym seems to miss the mark just a tad and David is good but I agree with other viewers . . . he is so generally similar with his designs, he's rather a one-trick pony!

My choice? Alice in Wonderland in her Tiffany Blue Box!

Posted by marilyn – August 27, 2006 12:06 AM

I thought it was unfair of the judges to knock Tym and Temple for applying their color all over the walls in their apartment, when Alice did exactly the same thing. I was surprised that David put up that horrible little wall around the livingroom area. It reminded me of an office cubicle. Temple's space looked more relaxing to me, but the dual purpose "full size" bed/sofa doesn't work for me. I don't understand Tym's work at all, regardless of his camera presence. Alice is the best in my book.

hgtv love love love the show i am addidcted to hgtv.
clyve you are great to watch and you have 2 of the best shows airing. love your humour and to hear you speak.
I have totally agreed with the dismissals.(Joseph was sad) Donna you got lazy on your last.(was rooting for you because of name) Temple yeah from utah, me too. I saw your addition tape while I watching episode 5. So when you got booted i was not sad. I was dissapointed in your style. Your decorating not selling sex!!?

I like Tym because he is able to do all and love the family. But Alice and David are great also. Cant wait to see next weeks

I read a bunch of the comments below, and hope I'm not repeating anyone since I couldn't read them all. My questions/thoughts:

I know that to make the show interesting and fast-paced, editing is going on...so I try not to put too much into everyone's facial expressions before the breaks (or anytime during the show for that matter)!

I would be interested to know how much time the judges and anyone else (Clive and the producers perhaps) take to come up with their decision. Is it truly done by just the 3 on-screen judges?

Do the judges look at clips/outtakes other than the "before and after" shots? I guess it would help them gain greater insight about individuals caught on camera, but again editing could harm or help.

How much time do the designer interviews take (in the blue room with the painted squares on the wall)? Does it bug the designers that they have to be taken away from their work to do those, or just know that it's part of the process?

I agree that the final three have done the best job overall. Will be interesting to see who's chosen, and what format his/her show will be.

I love HGTV channel!. I'm a person who likes to dream about interior design, and HGTV gives me that.Though I think the essence of Design star is missing something; even the production seems to lack some professionalism.
Clive the host is great but, the direction and content of his lines sometimes seem to be cut or missing something.
The judges, who I have heard little about them,(excuss my ignorance) seem like they are not the right choice for the job. Cynthia has been the only one to show not to be personally emotional about some of the contestants.
I like the competitions, but I think who ever is in charge of choosing these challenges, how and when they need to be done is not been realistic. Twelve or Twenty four hours, the use of only one color and the lack of help even to an experience interior designer would not be enough to perform a well put together project.
I don't know much about all these things. but I do see a lack of something. I look forward to see the rest of the episodes and see who wins.
Good luck to all!

David's use of color and space was head and shoulder above anyone else's. Temple's and Alices were average and Tyms -- that was just a plain nightmare.

I'm routing for David!!!!!

Posted by Tracy – August 26, 2006 9:36 PM

My only question is why it took so long to get rid of the truly arrogant, devoid-of-interpersonal-skills Temple?

Alice should have this, hands-down. She's talented and, most importantly, likeable.

Posted by Jack – August 26, 2006 7:28 PM

It seems to me that these contestants are all designing out of the same school - sleek, modern, clean lnes. Honestly these apts all looked pretty much the same to me. I really did not see much personality in any of them. They all did a good job but they were all the same and all lacking warmth and upon first stepping into their apts I was not feeling "hey, can I come in? It looks really inviting and homey in there!" Well, I guess it's easy to judge. But I'd love to see some more diverse and unique designs.

I. LOVE. THIS. SHOW!!!

Posted by MilkMaid – August 26, 2006 6:30 PM

I have watched parts of three of the episodes and I have to say that I am embarrassed for all involved. The "contestants" may have talent but none have the experience necesaary to be a "design star." Furthermore, I cannot believe that the judges would want to be a part of this nonsense. Would Mr. Yip accept a design project that had these kinds of constraints? Or a kitchen makeover in 32 hours? Not likely. Then why would he participate in judging projects like this?

One last comment. Critique but do not insult!

Posted by Robert – August 26, 2006 2:53 PM

I think this show is great, I watch HGTV all of the time, and I love this reality design star idea. It has been fun to see all of the talent and I really learn a lot myself by listening to the judges. I am disappointed however in the audition video's on this site to watch, I thought Temple's was completely out of line! How in the world did she even get chosen to be on the show? I hope it wasn't because of her "throw"! If that is the reason she was chosen to be on the show, I'm really glad she is gone, she used her body to get on the show, or at least that is what it looked like. I think the design talent is great in Alice and David, I think ALice has what it takes to be a "Design Star" Go Alice!!! The whole mess with Temple and Donna was rediculous, honestly, women, grow up! I was embarrassed by their actions and the way they treated each other. Looking forward to another episode tomorrow night!

Posted by LKremin – August 26, 2006 1:50 PM

Yea!! ... Sunday is almost here! You'd think I don't have a life (I DO!) wishing away my week until the next Design Star episode ... it's just so exciting! I agree with one of the postings below ... I am hoping the next challenge will impose a specific style instead of just a color on the designers. They all are leaning toward contemporary/IKEA tpye of rooms as they are the quickest and easiest to "manufacture". Let's face it ... a room full of white furniture, a can of paint and a few color-coordinated accessories and most of us could do just about as well. I think all the remaining designers have their own strengths and weaknesses ... David will no doubt work his on-camera persona up-to-speed with a little practice (look at all his show commentary to date ... natural, witty and love the facial expressions ... they speak volumes!!) Yes, I was really turned off by his cocky, "I'm pretty" attitude at first too, but now it kind of works with his personality (only certain men can get away with this!!) He certainly has the edge when it comes to vision, utilizing color and creating artwork ... again ... I'd love to see something traditional, rustic, etc., that would be a stretch for him! Tym is a very earthy, creative designer. His style is a bit spartin currently, but I think given a little bit more time with challenges ... we'll see him offer a more finished look ... always a little more eclectic than the others for sure, but more finished. His personality is a little intense, but he was soooo comfortable on camera. He would be a very different host than what we see on HGTV currently and that could be a terrific option????? Alice ... OK, I AM an "Alice" so I can relate to everything she has done so far and her personality. She is extremely charming, compassionate, considerate of others feelings without being sappy (I loved her comments re: Temples floor with the extra-twangy "We're not contractors!" She would blend in very well with the Joan Steffand, Michelle Torres types. We really didn't know what her abilities were in first few team efforts as she was more of a support person it seemed in that setting. I think we'll see more of her "range" in the individual challenges! SHOULD BE VERY INTERESTING!! ... and I hope all the talented designers get a great deal of exposure and work from their participation on the show. I could design a great room with a decent budget, resources and time frame, but in the circumstances these folks have worked ... I'm not so sure!?! Best of Luck Designers!

never thought I would get hooked on a reality show....but I did thanks to the marathon you did
with all the shows. Very interesting.

Yes..I could watch HGTV 24/7...I give all the designers so much credit to get on national TV and do what they do...it's very exciting to watch the challenges and see what the reaminding designers do...David annoyed me at first but I was impressed at every challenge with him, I love his style and would love for him to help me out with some design challenges in my home...I think Tym cries a lot and is suprised he's still here...Alice is good...think it'll be between her and David...Davind winning in the end. Can't wait.

I can only say one thing and that is I am glad to see Temple go.

Posted by DavidK – August 26, 2006 11:21 AM

I am very disappointed in the last decision. The judges need to get off their high horses and realize the contestants are not the "design for the rich and famous" type of people. They are normal every day type designers. Tym's designs have been horrible from the beginning, yet he stays on. I feel some consideration should be given for natural talent. Guess you have lost another viewer. Really don't like your version of "reality TV". I'm disappointed in HGTV as a whole. By the way, you need to take the "G" out of HGTV. We're not seeing it.

Posted by Kris – August 26, 2006 9:04 AM

David's has been most consistent in doing good designs in challenges. I like his work the most. I hope he wins. I want to see his show on HGTV! Alice's work are just ok, and she'd be boring to watch.

Posted by sandra – August 26, 2006 7:15 AM

Clive - really enjoy the show - now down to this idea of "Design Star" - don't think that is what you have here - I think what you have is a "Design Star Team". I think the show would be much more exciting and entertaining with Alice, Tym AND David - what a great bunch of creative voices for our homes. There's Alice that you can trust any room in the house to - just leave for the day and you can bet she will delivery something you will be happy with. Tym will delivery a creative thoughtfully planned space with the homeowner in mind - if you want outdoors - you'll get it - you get the idea. Then our cute David - I call him "circles" - he's great but can you image him decorating the average American's home? I can see Tym doing this over David. Anyway, they are all great - so give them all a run! They deserve it. By the way, I think all the designers deserve a BIG design star award - despite all the problems they survived. Gee, just surviving reading some of these comments is enough to anyone want to cry! Give them a break....could you do what they did?

Posted by Cindy Dowis – August 25, 2006 10:56 PM

I'm not surprised that Temple finally got the boot. She had an unrealistic idea of what it takes to redesign a room in the past and would not listen to anyone. It wouldn't have surprised me if she had asked Tym to remove a loadbearing wall on her kitchen project and for her to want it done in "a minute" because she has no experience. A pretty face does not a designer make. I like David's work.....his pet store room was wonderful.I think Alice needs to let go and just run with color and fabric. Tym is very intriging to me and I'm looking forward to seeing more from him I have not picked my winner yet.

Would most of us question or care if it turns out that "the vote was determined to be SO CLOSE that it was declared a TIE"?

I vote...for a tie vote!

Well I am in total agreement with most of you, the final decision will be a tough one. I am concerned, however, that Tym might be let go completly. I feel that would be a mistake. Although I am not convinced he is great design star material he certainly IS a powerful on-screen personality. You have many shows that the host or narrator is not necessarily a design genius but the shows are very successful. Clive himself is a great example of this. I think America could fall in love with Tym given the opportunity. Charisma is something that can't be taught.

I do believe that either of the other two would make decent candidates, but my final vote would have to be for Alice as I believe she is someone that almost anyone would be comfortable with having in thier home. She oozes with southern hospitality and refined interpersonal skills. Traits that David has not honed to as fine of an art.

Posted by Penny – August 25, 2006 7:42 PM

Watched a rerun last night - amazing how you see things that you missed before...

...like the mirror tiles on the back wall of Alice's apartment with the top one at a strange angle, and a shelf above the bed at the perfect height to do some serious cranial damage - WHAT was she THINKING?!?!

Temple's effort has actually grown on me - particularly since her apartment sadly had only one window down on the floor in the alcove off the kitchen! There was only so much the poor thing could do with that. It was clean and coordinated, which is much more than I could say for...

...Tym's apartment: It really was the worst - first for the clashing shades of green, the blue rug that didn't associate with anything else, and that framework that he built around the bed that served no purpose whatsoever: no fabric hangings or beads to break up the space, nothin. His furniture material choices were cold and uninspiring and his layout was drab and disjointed. A room from a prison, I think one of the judges called it.

David may seem like a one hit wonder, but think about this: You wouldnt call Kenneth Brown if you wanted an English Garden room w/ lots of chintz and florals, and you wouldn't call Mario Buatta if you wanted a sleek loft - so what's wrong w/ David having his certain style that he's known for? He was creative with the space planning - even if the result didn't work so well, at least he tried something original.

He's creative, fun loving and nice to look at: David is our Design Star.

(Where do I sign up for the next competition???)

Posted by BEP – August 25, 2006 7:34 PM

I must say between Design Star and Hell's Kitchen, these are more drawing (and to say the least fun) than Survivor or and other reality based show. I find the remaining 3 good choices and deserve their places. I hope Tym can pull it together at crunch time.

Posted by Nancy – August 25, 2006 7:23 PM

Clive is the star of this show. I only started watching because of Clive. However, the contestants have my interest now to the point that I watched the show twice this week, it was so good.

I really like all three finalists. I'm not sure who should win yet but I have a feeling it is between Alice and David.

I like Tym the best for on screen because I think his body language is relaxed and comes across really well for me. He is good at verbally communicating his design ideas even though I don't think they translate as well in the room. -I haven't liked his designs so far. They come across very cold and sterile to me. -On the other hand I did like the shades of green he used for the walls. The bedspread was not my color or taste.

I won't even guess at what's going to happen this week because the previews are so deceiving. But I will be glued to the T.V. this Sunday night again. Thanks Clive, you are the best.

Posted by Oblina – August 25, 2006 6:42 PM

Bravo to this show. I'm another who doesn't care for most reality shows, but this one is an exception. I was very pleased when the annoyingly egotistical Vanessa got the boot early on.

I love David's artistic sensibilities and vision. To my mind, he "brings it" every time. I agree that the wall in the most recent challenge (#5) was a bit too blocky. If he had lowered it about a foot and a half it might have worked better. But I've loved everything else about his work. I hope he keeps his shirt on from now on so that his talent is not overshadowed by his physique.

Alice is cute, and her designs are not bad, but they don't usually stand out as much to me as David's. I worry about her ability to lead a design team, since being an agressive leader is not her forte. I think she needs to improve in that area if she gets the show.

Cheers to the remaining contestants, and kudoes to everyone at HGTV. I am currently in the process of "Designing to Sell" my own house. I have learned a tonne of great things from your various programs. Can't wait to use them in my new house and yard as well!

David is really the only one that has any taste or talent. Tym is too off-beat; and Alice? Well, Alice needs to work on her people skills. A design school refresher wouldn't hurt either

Posted by Marker – August 25, 2006 4:24 PM

I truly believe that at the end of the day the judges know what their doing. The three that are left are truly the best all round designers. I hate to see any of these three leave. They all bring alot to the work. I really wish there was a second and third prize fitting these three gifted and personable designers.

Posted by Margaret Wilson – August 25, 2006 3:46 PM

I believe the judges are unrealistic and catty. I thought Temple's design was clean, fresh and very inviting. Of course, I love yellow. It certainly ranked above Tym's sea of green.

Posted by Cherl – August 25, 2006 2:00 PM

This is the only reality show I will watch, and since it is on my favorite channel, it's easy to catch. I have alreay picked my favorite for the star, and wish I could just vote now. Alice is great. She works with class and handles the interpersonal areas in a mature classy style. David is talented, but all of his designs kind of look the same. He would be OK as a design star, but he would need to prove that he can do different types of design. After all, in the real world, everyone doesn't want paintings with red circles all over the walls. I can't figure Tym out yet. I'm not even sure he has much talent. His designs never seem to have that "pulled together" look. So, I'll vote for charming, talented Alice, and hope that if David wins, you will pull him aside and make him learn some different styles of design, or I simply won't bother to watch his show much!

Does anyone know what the process is to becoming a host of a hgtv tv show? I'm up for the challenge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by rick – August 25, 2006 1:38 PM

Where and how in the world did these people get on this show? Too think that anyone of them has what it takes to be a host on hgtv is a insult to all in the design world! Tell me where and when,I will show up and go head to head with anyone! HGTV give me a chance! I am the one that can bring tv design land back to the real reality of interior design!

Posted by rick – August 25, 2006 12:29 PM

I remember when it was announced that HGTV was about to be born; I was so excited! I don't watch much except for the weather channel and your channel because I consider my time as a gift to be wisely and profitablt invested. I love Designed to Sell and House Hunters and anything with Clive or Joan Steffend or Kenneth Brown.
I think Temple had a lot of talent but poor interpersonal skills. A little classwork and she could become great. I enjoyed the twins but could see they didn'r measure up. I loved David's red challenge; he seemed to know how to use color for accents and highlights. I think Alice & Tym have learned a lot during the weeks of the show. I can't wait to find out who wins.
If I were going to hire one of them it would be David, beccause he isn't afraid of strong colors and doesn't slather the challenge color all over but uses it to make sparkle and exciting exclamation points in the story that is a design space.
You experts were great. Who couldn't love Vern?
Clive, you are a real class act. I love your concern for those who have to leave; I see it in your face every week. I also love your tads of sarcasm from time to time; a little vinegar actually sweetens up the show.
Great job all!

Posted by Budge – August 25, 2006 11:30 AM

Great show last week. All the weak designers have been weeded out and the best are left. I really hate to see anyone lose at this point as I think all three have great ideas/talent. I do have to say, Alice and David are the top two and if they could cohost a show, that would be the best. A show together, next one with Alice and then one with David, then start over. The only thing I didn't like about David's room was that wall around the couch. To separate the bed area from the TV/couch area would be good, but the then curving the wall around behind the TV did make such a small space seem smaller.

Great job everyone. Eagerly awaiting Sunday's show.

Posted by Suzanne – August 25, 2006 11:11 AM

It is down to my three favorite; I am so glad. I would place them as Alice, first, Tym, then David. Alice is darling and confident. Tym is realistic and sure of himself and just appeals to me over David. David is talented, but he seems to be a one-hit wonder with colored circles.
Summing it up and thinking of my home, I would trust Alice or Tym.
Oh, and I, too, noticed that Temple's presentation was slightly different from Sunday's viewing. Why is that?

Posted by tennbeekeeper – August 25, 2006 9:32 AM

I'd really like the designers to be given a style to work with rather than to incorporate their own. I like David a great deal but am unsure I would want to watch his show because all of his designs resemble one another. What else can he do?

Posted by Peg – August 25, 2006 3:30 AM

Can't wait to see this Sunday's competition! It is getting tougher on both the contestants and the judges!

I feel that David's talent is still the strongest of the 3 remaining contestants remaining... but I would be very interested to see if he can do something outside of his comfort zone...like traditional or cottage! He is wonderful at contemporary and transitional. I would think that versatility would a must in interior design show. His TV personality was a bit hurried, but he could easily be "taught" camera presentation... he has natural personality to draw from.

Alice has finally shown some of her talents. Like she stated in her profile, she isn't one to take charge in a group situation so I don't think she really had shown her talent until this last episode. Her camera persona is good and again she has a personality that would be very easy to develop for TV cameras!

Tym has lots of camera presence. You can tell he has spent some time in front of one! However, his design talents aren't as strong as the other two. His concepts are good but they just don't materialize visually. I think Ft. Wayne, Indiana is lucky to have a talented person available to them! This national exposure should give him loads of business!!!!

If it comes down to David and Alice for the final episode... America will have a really tough choice. I'm sure the judges will be glad that THEY aren't the ones to make the final decision!!!! I know I haven't made my final choice as of yet.

Good luck to all!

Clive,
My wife Cheryl and I are huge fans and have followed the show since the beginning. We are in the middle of our own move (Hawaii to California) and our first priority was to get cable so we could catch DS the next night, we were glad we did. We came into the final four with three favorites (Dave, Tym, and Alice). We too seem to be following the crowd and are leaning strongly towards David's spot-on talent. Though I must admit, the remaining three all could host a show, we think Dave is the strongest candidate in this first season. Regardless of the final outcome, PLEASE record our vote to repeat this show many more seasons - it is our must see TV. Regards,
Erik

Unfortunately I don't get to see Design Star until the rerun on Thursdays so I have to stay away from the HGTV site in order to remain surprised. It was definitely a surprise this week. I thought for sure Tym was out. I thought his design was way to cold. Maybe the judges are seeing something in him that I just haven't noticed yet.

Loved Alice's fabric, color usuage and her presentation was really the best. David's designs so far have been my favorite with the exception of this week. I think he's a consistently strong designer and the presentation will come with experience.

Temple's room was certainly livable but I agreed with the judges that it was a little bland--even though I liked her room better than Tym's.

So far David's my next "Design Star". Alice still has a shot. Tym lost my vote after the leash thing a couple weeks ago!

Posted by Elizabeth – August 25, 2006 1:13 AM

I am really glad that Alice is still in.
I was sorry, in a way, to see Temple go.
As someone said, she went with grace &
dignity & no whimpering or crying, etc.

Maybe it is just because it is my name too,
but Alice has been my choice to be the next
designstar from the get go.

David is showing us his very creative artist talent and is my current favorite to win Design Star. To quote him "I dont do good, I do great!" That really sticks with me...and I can see how that is becoming evident in his work each week. I wasnt sure I would like him due to his quote, but after watching him in action these past weeks, I tend to agree with him.

Alice is my second choice to win Design Star. I hope she comes up to the plate this week and wows us all with something fantastic. I would change my mind about her in flash if that happened! So far, her work has been good, but nothing that particularly stands out to me. Come on Alice, WOW US!

Posted by Dawn – August 25, 2006 12:41 AM

Alice... David. David....Alice. Not sure which is my favorite. I like Alice's designs, I liked the open, airy feel of her blue room. Besides, she's just as cute as a bug in a rug, and she's from Texas, y'all.

I also liked David's assertive use of red in his room, and his artwork, but not too keen on that wall/divider. But, he's a fellow leftie! As for the negative comments about him going shirtless too often, I never noticed it until I read all the comments about it here on this blog. Gotta admit, though, his bare chest is much easier on the eye than seeing my husband's every day (he never wears a shirt in the house!)

Yes, call me shallow.

I think Alice has the edge. In my book, anyway.

Posted by Jade – August 24, 2006 11:03 PM

First of all, I loathe reality shows of all kind (and everyone's obsession of them)!!!!! I did enjoy the first couple of episodes of Survivor though. However, my 15 y/o and I absolutely love this show. Imagine a teenager screeching with excitement, "Is that a new episode mom?" She seems to be more (if possible) enthralled than I am. You have produced a hit HGTV!!!!!!!!!! I would like to say that I enjoyed Temple's designs and I believe that the others (especially Donna and the Trash Lady) felt intimidated by her. I believe that she was not a natural leader, and she found it hard to get through to people. Yes, indeed, she needs more experience to become a star, but I liked her personality.

One of the twins always threw design genres around, but I'm not convinced that he really knew his stuff (I hope it wasn't the Harvard grad). Vanessa is good, but she lacks pizzazz. Tym is cool, but he lacks personality.

David, David, David...............................
I love his cockiness, expressions, looks, and most of all his refreshing and mesmerizing designs. His pet store design blew me away. I did not like the restrictive feel of his apartment though, but it was still magnificent if you agreed with the style. He's a genuine charmer that knows his stuff. I would love to meet him. Loooooveeee...

this is the only reality show i watch. i missed it sunday nite so i had to make sure i saw it tonite. very interesting challenge. my tastes run very much to what david designs, so he has been a favorite. however, i have found that alice has grown on me. partly because of her personality, but partly because i think that she has grown a lot since the competition began. i also feel that david and alice were not whiners or complainers, but just got down to doing what they needed to do. that is a great quality. so i am torn between the two of them. i continue to be impressed though with the quality of the comments from the judges. one can learn a lot by listening to that!!

Posted by diane – August 24, 2006 10:39 PM

This is going to be difficult! I love ALL three of the finalists. Okay, let us vote, but how about giving all of them a position with HGTV. They each have special talents...just different. This show has been so much fun to watch!

Posted by Nancy – August 24, 2006 9:57 PM

Give me a break! Was Temple's hosting bit re-edited? I distinctly remember her inviting us into her "crib." She used the word twice and I cringed both times. This evening she was saying "house" instead! What gives?

Posted by MaryFaith – August 24, 2006 9:52 PM

Clive,
If I didn't have to work I would watch HGTV 24/7. I thought you did great with design to sell but this has everything beat!! I am not areality show enthusist but will not miss this for anything on Sunday evening. I think judges have done well with eliminations thus far. Although I enjoy and appreciate Alice, David by far is my favorite. Not only does he have an appealing design style,he has handled each situation with an easy grace considering the different personalities as well as he is easy on even the older eyes with a charm to match He would definitly bring your ratings even higher. David all the way!!!!

Posted by Deb Haws – August 24, 2006 9:44 PM

The remaining three contestants have shown some talents, however, I believe Tym is the obvious choice for an overall star. He is extremely creative and thinks out of the box, manages his projects, accomplishes any task, and is by far the most alive presenter. He gives detailed explanations of his projects. His audition tape was wildly creative and he showed his gifts on soooooo many levels. Tym's life looks exciting and artsy. This contest is looking for a "designer" not macho eye candy or the sweet decorator girl next door. Tym is the solid choice for the "Design Star" and looks pretty darn good too!

Posted by Lisa – August 24, 2006 9:40 PM

Love the show, can't wait to see it each week, and I watch the weekly "reruns" to catch things I've missed. (Should I get a life, or what?) How can we vote for a "Design StarS show" with David & Alice? David's contemporary design needs Alice's cozy style. Both of their personalities are winsome and real.

Posted by Nancy – August 24, 2006 9:36 PM

Okay, everyone, the show is so much fun to watch. Even my husband is now hooked. I agree with everyone's comments about Temple... she just doesn't have what it takes. I'm still having problems with David and his macho'ism. Tym isn't right for decorating, and Alice is just plain sweet. So, what will next week bring?

Posted by Paula – August 24, 2006 9:25 PM

Watched the first 4 shows in a marathon session and am totally hooked! David is my prediction for the winner, but I'd love to see a co-hosting with Alice. He projects professionalism, but Alice projects an empathy in what a homeowner might be interested in.

Posted by Kathy – August 24, 2006 9:15 PM

I believe in Alice for her true personality and positive design appeal. She is true America. She is honest and you would love her to come to your home and work her magic. You trust her and believe in her. Alice is your new Design Star.

Posted by lynn – August 24, 2006 9:10 PM

I loved Temple's room. I think she has such natural talent. It might not have been her best work, according tothe judges, but I think she has proved herself over and over in the past. It was a shame to see her go. If she was a designer in my vicinity, I would definity use her to remodel any part of my house. I also think she has a wonderful personality and was definitely intentionally portrayed as a b----- on purpose to stir up the pot. David and Alice are wonderful too, but I believe the judges were totally wrong this episode. Thanks bunches. And I look forward to seeing who wins. How about giving Alice and David a show together? They are both so cute and talented. :)

Posted by Laura – August 24, 2006 9:09 PM

I thought Tym was the clear winner of the hosting part of the competition, and I liked his design the best. But I think that my tastes and Tym's taste aren't universal. He seems to like metal a lot, and people can see that as cold and stark. Personally, I'd like to take some metal ceiling tile and use it on the wall underneath my stairway, but my parents own the house, and they would kill me if I did that.

I thought David made the best use of his color, but I disagree with the way he divided up the room. I didn't think Temple's use of color was that bad, but the overall design seemed somewhat similar in tone to the kitchen she designed.

One would think that blue would be a soothing color, but the amount that Alice used seemed intense. I have to admit I speak from experience. I painted my living room a somewhat darker shade of blue than Alice used, and it's hard to find any furniture that goes well with the color. The other minor problem I had with her design was the shelves over the bed. I would be afraid I would hit one with my head if I woke up from a bad dream. But Alice is sincere, sweet and hard-working. I wish I were more like her.

But I'm more like Tym, and I'm sticking with him to be the next Design Star.

Posted by Debbie – August 24, 2006 6:34 PM

My Sunday nights totally revolve around this show! David is by far my choice. He's obviously quite talented and artistic, but what I like most about him is his personality. He's confident but not arrogant and is very laid back - perfect TV host if you ask me! Alice is my second pick. I was very happy to see Donna go a couple weeks ago! HGTV - this is the best reality show on television - hope to see many, many more seasons!

Posted by Angela – August 24, 2006 6:21 PM

Hey Clive, I am not at all fond of reality shows except for those on HGTV. Design Star & Designed to Sell are 2 of my favorites. Alice has the personality & David has the best & most consistent designs, they ought to have a show together!

Posted by Judy – August 24, 2006 6:10 PM

Clive, you are so charming! Let's get together for coffee! I am a realtor and redesign/redecorate/ basically fluff my client's homes for a quicker more profitable sale. Thanks for D2S, we all learn wonderful ideas and techniques. Design Star is fantastic! Congrats on another hit! It is creative, innovative, and dramatic! I believe Alice is sweet, cute and country nice but we have all seen that show. David brings a twist - he is unique and innovative. I believe his show would be full of fresh, new ideas, constantly changing as he would bring in the art world along with the design world. Fresh, creative, innovative - isn't that what HGTV is all about... HGTV needs David Bromstad - he has vision and creativity beyond any one of the other designers. He is a DESIGNARTIST. Each show his creations and designs stand out, the others just seemed to move things, paint things, and make them "pretty". I truly believe there are several other hundred designers out here and we can do the same things - isn't that why we watch HGTV! I believe David's nervousness from the last show proves that he is sweet and he is not arrogant. We've already seen that he is not afraid of the camera and the camera loves him! David is your next star!! Now about that cup of coffee??? What's good for you?

Posted by Lara – August 24, 2006 6:08 PM

David has so much talent it is amazing. He looks at a challenge with such a unique and fresh perspective. He is head and shoulders above the rest.

Alice has the personality. She seems approachable and comfortable however, eventually, the easy confortable feeling will subside if her designs don't have that unique punch.

Tym has talent but, really seems as though he would make a better assistant than a lead. Not particularly unique or noteworthy. Sorry.

So my vote is obviously with David. It has been since the second show.

Now talent (David) with personality (Alice) together may be an interesting alternative....

LOVE this show! LOVE Clive. Cannot get enough of Design Star, Clive, and Design to Sell, which is why it makes me so mad that I can't find any Design Star shows ON DEMAND. (Especially because I missed the first one.) The trailers say that they are there, alas, they are not. And there are only one or two Design to Sell episodes ON DEMAND, which is frustrating for a junkie like me. Back to Design Star, Please don't wait til next year, do one in the Fall, and the Spring ok, you get it. As for final three, the absolute right choices-- I like all for different reasons, although I felt Tym was definetely the most comfortable in front of the camera talking about DESIGN not himself. I like his construction cum designer angle, it's different and refreshing. I think I really would tune in. And yes Alice is sweet (too?) and I am ambivalent about her accent, is that a reason to tune in? Don't know if her designs are unique enough for me... And David, I do love his designs but boy was he nervous, but you gotta give them all a break as they were working like dogs and had this sprung on them at the last minute nearly. I like a previous poster's idea of teaming Alice and David together.
Regardless, they are all winners in my book, head and shoulders above the rest.

I love this show! I feel that David is overall the most impressive of the designers, the most creative and very much a person who can get along well with others without losing his own sense of integrity or back-stabbing (which was one of the problems with some of the others who are now gone). I really see his rooms having an overall cohesiveness that is very much what I would like to see in future shows and I can imagine that he will develop and grow as a true "design star" with a strong following for his own show. Alice's "Tiffany Box Blue" was lovely and her hosting stint was delightful, but otherwise she has not shown the consistency that David has week after week. He's my definite choice! Thank you Clive and the Judges for being straightforward but not killing the spirit of past contestants.

I am not usually attracted to reality TV. In fact, I avoid it like the plague... Except this show. I LOVE IT! I can't wait until Sunday evenings. I think the competition is really between David and Alice. I really like David a lot and hope he becomes the Next Design Star. I like Alice, but I don't think that she could really hold my attention in a TV show. I was Soooo glad to see Temple go. I think that Donna really didn't help in Episode 4, but she should have stayed and Temple should have been booted then! The Episode 5 challenge really would have given us the opportunity to see what Donna could do. Someone mentioned that Tym has great construction and design ideas. I think that is totally true. He should be supervising sites, and have others do the follow through. He should not be the Next Design Star.

My vote is for David!!!!

David, David, David.....need I say more?

Wow ... love the show! Can't wait each week for the new episode and watch the reruns to see what I missed the first time around! I try to remind myself that television editing can really depict a person in a particular light by only showing the "dramatic". You can tell this is being done somewhat (OK ... I know drama sells "tickets"), but thankfully, it seems to be in moderation. I am soooo glad this is being taken as a serious competition and the comments and decisions from the judges have been professional and very straight forward and yes, even compassionate ... YEA! Clive ... I love your sense of humor and progress checks. Just goes to show that a host can be witty AND YET still supportive of the competitors ... good for you! We didn't need another "Simon!" That is what is setting this show apart from other sensationalistic realty shows ... this one IS for real. Forthright commentary is fine, but please continue to remember that these are educated, talented individuals really putting themselves out there and they deserve respect for their efforts. These are not the bimbos and gigolos from Tempation Island! So proud of HGTV for finding an entertaining AND integrity based middle ground! You've won the respect and attention of your viewers!

Just SOOOOO thrilled Temple is gone!!!

I am enjoying Design Star so much that whoever wins, I think it will be a letdown after watching the race to get there! The fun is really in the contest, and I wonder just how many shows the winner will actually host. Has this been mentioned at all? One show? Three shows? Ten shows? Or just 'wait and see how it goes!'
Of course, the producers will be foolish if they don't do another Design Star selection again next year! This show is a winner and it is the suspense that has everyone captivated!

I think David is rising head and shoulders above the other designers. I waited this long to write about last Sunday's episode to see what lingered in my mind. I had a difficult time recalling just what Alice had done with her robin's egg blue color, and remembered many details of David's work. I feel David has what "can't be taught" and anything he's lacking in presentation skills can be quickly learned. In addition, I think his design skills equal those of the other designers on HGTV and complements those program offerings. I'm not sure Alice has the design experience needed to enhance the channel.

Posted by Mary – August 23, 2006 11:12 PM

Ok, So where do we vote!

I think it is between David and Alice. Tym, I think he can do alot but his taste is still very strong on the construction/contractor side of things. Maybe he can stick with helping some friends and relatives for a good price to make a little extera money. It just seems like he picked up design as a side issue and we all know that what you give yourself totally to you become and he has not given himself to design so how can he really be a designer. He is a contractor in the construction with a little bit of design talent that's all.

This is the best show on TV. I'm relieved to be rid of Temple. I could not have watched that spoiled brat who made excuses for every negative. I'd like to see a design team made up of Alyce & David. Tym is adorable but looks and talks like he is always frustrated. Is is too late to switch gears and do a "design star team". They look good together.

Hi, Clive:

I think the red room of David was the best. He has to have his own show. All the desings he all ready did it's just incredible. Good job for all of you with this show and Designed to Sell and the new show I love HGTV channel I learned a lot. Go, David Go!

Posted by Griselly – August 23, 2006 9:25 PM

I think you Clive are doing an outstanding job and its NOT an easy one. Tough to tell them their show is cancelled.

I am glad to see Temple gone and I really hope she reads some of these comments and realizes she needs to work hard on how she treats others. Her current way will never work and will not be good for the client.

I think David and Alice have styles that compliment each other and might be very good to cohost a show.

I do think that if HGTV decides to do this again that you might consider a new procedure. Give the designers a look at what their challenge will be, then segregate them (like a jury) where they cannot bouce ideas off each other. This might be better to bring out their talents.

The current format is shoot from the hip which is not what happens when they obtain a client in real life.

Just a suggestion.

I REALLY LIKE the show and I rarely like any type of reality show as most are foolish. This one definitely is NOT foolish.

Posted by Sandra Beene – August 23, 2006 8:45 PM

This show is great. What took HGTV so long to come up with this idea? I would much rather watch designers compete than below average entertainers do their thing on national t.v.

Posted by Kay – August 23, 2006 8:38 PM

I would like to say I'm not overly fond of reality shows, they seem to me to be lacking on the reality side and I've found myself wondering how much I'am being played. With that being said, I have watched all of the episodes. I really think that the remaining 3 are right where they should be. I do think that David stands out as the all around best designer, but can he relax in his skin and host a show? That is the question. Still, when I compare him and the others to lets say Candace Olson wow do they compare? Would I tune in weekly? mmm

Posted by Dee – August 23, 2006 6:52 PM

I am so glad that Temple, Donna, and Vanessa are gone. It makes the show more enjoyable to watch now that they are no longer on it. I think that David has talent but still do not care for his cockiness. Tym work is O.K., but Alice is the one that should be the next "Design Star".

Posted by Ellen – August 23, 2006 6:43 PM

I like Alice's work and her sweet personality. I think David is very gifted as an artist but his personality doesn't win me over. Tym is also talented but I see him as being the next one to go. It makes sense that the audience will have 2 different designers with different personalities to choose from. Alice is like the Paula Dean of design. I do miss Temple, she is a hottie!

Posted by Felix – August 23, 2006 6:31 PM

Alice has class, charm and so talented. Her accent and her design sense is so refreshing. She would make a great host.
David would be my second choice. His work looks good visually, but he hasn't shown that he is a designer. Who would want to live in a small so chopped up. He does seem to be stuck on the bold designs on canvas. He is stuck on himself, but not as much as Temple was. Thank God she is gone! Trouble with a capital "T."

Posted by Sarah – August 23, 2006 6:20 PM

I love the show! Can't wait for Sunday nights! Clive - you are a fantastic host on this and Designed to Sell! It was great fun this past week getting to see the "designers" on camera presenting their products...any one of the remaining three would be welcome on my TV!

Posted by Carol – August 23, 2006 6:15 PM

Wassup Clive?
I've read the other blogs and we all agree on one thing and that is Design Star is a great show! I'm a HGTV Queen and I must say Design Star is one of my favorite along with D2S. You are a great host and might I add handsome!
I can never wait until the following Sunday to see the next show I always look forward to doing so.
And now for my prediction...Drum Roll please, Ladies and Gentleman the host of their own design show is DAVID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Because not only is he extremely talanted but because he's a piece of "eye candy" well, besides you of course Clive. ;-))
I sincerely hope that this show will continue on forever.

Red is not easy to work with, but David made it work in this challenge. He didn't over-use or abuse the color assigned to him like the others did - if you have the right touch you know when less is more. Also I think over all David has shown the most creative ability and talent in the challenges and deserving of a title "design star." His work on the show has been very good and his official website shows designs that are star quality (Alice's official website shows plain and average designs - nothing special) HGTV can do an interesting show with David's style that sometimes fuses fantasy Art with designs and does carvings and sculpture too. And David has a likable personality and should be easy to work with. What Alice will bring to a show has already been done to death. David should win because his show and creations will be creative and inspiring - that's what HGTV needs to keep viewers and bring in new ones.

Posted by silvershadow – August 23, 2006 6:02 PM

It's interesting to observe the four players that remain. David still presents himself as a professional both in the quality and execution of his designs and in the way that he handles himself as a representative of the interior design community. Unfortunately many people are not aware that the Interior Design profession holds it's members to high standards, and that every member of the interior design community needs to try and uphold those standards for the good of the profession. The constant bickering between Tym and Temple was simply annoying to watch. I am happy to see the nastiness between the contestants disappearing. This competition should be about the quality of the designer's work, not about how nasty they can be in order to beat one another out of the competition.

Hi Clive! I'm hooked on this show. I want David to win, but think it's going to be Alice. I think Tym is a little too 'out there' for mainstream America. David has a great eye, but I just don't think he's got what it takes to make it with HGTV's style.

I could not stand Temple. And while I can't recall the name of the one young girl (she did the beauty suppy room)...I'm sooo glad she's gone. I got really tired of her eye rolling and face making. Alice needs to watch that...I think that that is something people catch, and if she's going to show immaturity that way, it might not come across too well with the judges.

P.S....Clive, my husbie won't watch D2S anymore because I once told him he reminded me of you, and now he's jealous cuz he's figured out my little crush!

Posted by Anita – August 23, 2006 4:02 PM

So very glad Vern quit supporting Temple and her "so called" raw talent(s). She has been truly obnoxious and deceptive thru out all the episodes.

My pick would be David.... His designs are eye-catching. Alice would be second but I can see me watching her show....too bland. Tim should go home.... He hasn't been very good at all.

Love the show.... Hope there will be more seasons to come.

I just want to echo EVERY WORD said by the poster above (identified as "Cindy"). She articulated well everything I have been thinking and feeling about the show and the designers. I've waited to see how the designers met the various challenges before choosing to put in my two cents, but now, well, HERE I AM! ;)

I'd have to add that while David's initial cockiness turned me off, he has consistently shown that he has the design sense and the ability to back up his sense of self. I can appreciate that. And as the challenges progress, an appropriate nervessness has started to peep through, and I can appreciate that, too.

As likeable as both Alice and Tym are, I don't think they have strong enough personalities to be solo design show hosts. I think they would each be great additions to THE RIGHT team mix (i.e., definitely NOT together).

Obviously, David is my current choice as the next Design Star, and I look forward to the final challenges.

Hi Clive,

I am glad that Temple is no longer a part of the group. She seemed to think it was all about her. It was quite easy for her to cover up with lies which was good at trying to cover herself. She spent too much time and energy being bossy and glamorous. She does not have the talent or knowledge to be a designer. Temple would not have had the total interests of the homeowner at heart.

Posted by RG – August 23, 2006 2:06 PM

This was a great show!
I am so happy Alice won this week!
In terms of the challenges, I really think Temple was thrown off by the color. Personally I would have wanted a darker version on the walls and done a Parisian pied-a-terre look; but if she's never seen this done on her favorite TV shows, maybe she couldn't visualize it.
Where is Tym going with his designs? I still don't get it. I appreciated his use of two tones to designate space use, but he didn't use his space. It looked like a college student lived there. I'm sorry, people have more stuff than that.
I loved David's use of an accent wall. I loved his brown wall and the reference to the cabinets in the kitchen. I hated his "living room area". It was cramped and claustrophobic looking. The furniture was too big for the space. It didn't strike me as a completed space for some reason. Generally great looking, but not complete.
Alice the room was fabulous. I loved how you took the doors from the cabinets and created framed pictures for the accessories. I felt like I was looking at a finished room. I only wish you and the others would have considered how to use the window spaces next to the columns. Perhaps a hidden closet? It was dead space in every room. In N.Y. city where you are charged by the inch for living, dead space is a commodity no one can afford. Nonetheless, my vote is with you Alice.
Again, Clive, I love this show. I am so glad to see new Design 2 Sell shows on the air too. Looking forward to next week and the countdown to voting. HOOOORRRAAAAYYY!!!

Wanted to say this show is awesome and I look forward to watching it every week. I wish that they had not had two eliminations 2 weeks in a row because it would have been nice to see how the other designers would have done the studio apts...the format as it stood allowed for no mistakes and everyone, no matter how good they are make mistakes...it would have been nice to see some recover in the studio apt setting and made for a more interesting competition not to mention, a longer series ;)

With that said David is incredible. I even liked his design this week that got so much criticism. Overall it rocked. I think he should have made the wall in the livingroom that held the tv a movable wall so that it could close off the bedroom when entertaining but still be moved to the living area when the occupant wanted to watch tv. I love his personality and think he is a talented artist. I think he is much like Kenneth Brown in style and a show could be made where his own designs were featured. I love that his artist background makes for great sculpture and each room is a true work of art.

Alice has the all around look, personality and likability that would work with a tv show although I think she needs to work on her shyness. She is modest which is appealing. I think her designs are okay but nothing that really wowed me. Still I think she has great potential for her own show. I don't think she would be good at a show that featured her own designs rather hosting a show like country style where she showcases other peoples talents. I think her hosting ability outweighs her individual talent as a designer.

I am one that finds Tym's work very interesting. I like that he thinks outside of the box and takes more risk then any of the other designers. I look forward each week to his work because I know it will NOT be your run of the mill design which is exciting. I really likes this week because his personality showed through for the first time. He is a likable guy and it would be fun to watch a show he hosted. I could see Tym doing a freestyle show where he used his unique creativity to use what the homeowner already had to make a room rock. That is the type of show that appeals to me the most because anyone with any talent can design a room with a monetary budget but few can do so with a minimal budget or no budget at all. One has to be able to think outside the box to pull that off and Tym could do that one with great ease.

So basically I think all three have a place on HGTV but in different venues where their strengths could shine through.

PS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad Donna is gone. She was a pain in the butt and whiney. Temple? I could not think of a more obnoxious host for a show. She is a legend in her own mind. Yes, there is some talent there but NOT enough to compensate for her OBNOXIOUS presence.

Lastly, Vanessa too was immature and obnoxious but I would have loved to see how she would have taken on the studio. I think underneath her awful personality there was some talent.

Posted by Cindy – August 23, 2006 10:55 AM

So glad that Temple is gone. All that whining and arguing. Very immature and makes you wonder how she is with clients and contractors. She seemed to have a distinct inability to hear anyone's ideas or suggestions other than her own. Then, all the talk about being a single mom, etc. The client and the viewers don't want to hear about that. They want to hear about the design and how it meets the needs expressed. She may have had raw talent but organization, diplomacy and teamwork are not traits than can be taught. You either learned them growing up or you didn't.

Posted by Nikki – August 23, 2006 10:21 AM

Great show! I approved of the judges' choice this week and also their comments seemed accurate. Personally, I don't choose what I LIKE best, but rather who does the thing that works that I never would have thought of. In that case, I voted for David to win this week, even though his design did have some obvious flaws. The other three created rooms that I would have been able to come up with, given the money and carpentry services. Just because you shop at IKEA doesn't mean your room has to look like a page from their catalog. The fact that Alice seems to understand how rooms FUNCTION is her great talent. Her comment about Temple's kitchen floor design was brilliant. Good luck to all three of them when they work with real homes and real families. And P.S. to Clive: love the new Designed to Sell promos!

One word: "David"

Better -- Three words: "David and Alice."

Going on vacation tomorrow and trying to figure out how I can manage to get back to the hotel in time to see the show on Sunday. Even called the hotel to make sure they have HGTV. Is that sick or what?

Posted by M from Alaska – August 23, 2006 4:26 AM

I neglected to tell you Clive that I really enjoy your work on this show and on D2S. You have a refreshing way with your delivery and I really enjoy it. As predicted, Temple went back to Utah and her kids. No more do we have to hear her contradictory statements about being a single mother, and about her children's father. YUCK!
Alice did a great job on both counts, Tym was so-so in design and great in delivery, and David was off for some reason; I too agree that the bed area should have been the one to be more enclosed. But, everyone is entitled to a so-so week. I think we will be saying good-bye to Tym this week, after that it's anybody's guess.

(ps, I have never written to ablog before in my life until I wrote to you. Says something about how I feel about your shows

Posted by ric – August 23, 2006 2:07 AM

I've been a faithful viewer from the first show and surely enjoy reading the varied comments from others. I'm an HGTV junkie, watching or, more likely, listening, all day long as I work from home. I even see reruns multiple times but learn something new each time. I have a BS degree in Interior Design and although I'm not working now in the field, I'm still always learning.

From the first episode, I thought Alice was the most professional, most tactful and most knowledgeable in your field of ten.

My questions are regarding what you are planning to do with the Design Star and whether this programming will be continued each year. I imagine you were trying to get a variety of personalities and experiences - 10 experienced practicing interior designers obviously was not your goal, but selecting Ramona as one of the top ten made me feel negative on the show from the start. What could you have been thinking of? If you want a design idea show, you need someone, male or female, like Candice Olson of Divine Design who thinks out of the box, can do all kinds of themes, has a team of craftsmen to support her and has a professionalism and quirkiness that is most appealing. I know of NO designer who is asked to paint, build furniture, lay floors and lay tile as you have expected your ten to do. Nor do they work with a team concept. Each is used to thinking on their own and coming up with real life solutions for their clients, not a team of judges. They've been asked to be creative with talents they have never tried, and their response to the challenges has been most telling.

If your goal is to develop a show like D2S (which I adore and where Lisa gets her hands in there,) Re-Mix, Design on a Dime, etc., which start with a very different premise, then your selection of artists, furniture designers, architects, etc., might be more appropriate. Interior Designers design and project manage; Design Craftsmen are a different animal.

I hope that if you continue this each year, your selections of finalists are more appropriate using professionalism, education and experience as a firm base.

Hi Clive,

Love D2S and DesignStar!

I'm very glad that Temple is gone. She should have left much sooner, whining is not an attractive trait for a potential TV show host. She was really good at passing the blame and not listening to her cohorts, espescially in the kitchen remodel. Tym, well Tym ain't my mug of beer. His designs are bOOOooooring! David and Alice both got it going on, so it's going to be tough for me to pick one as the winner.

I love the fact that Vern Yip is one of the judges. I've always enjoyed his designs, when he was on that other home show. He's knowledgeable,up front and is a rockin' designer....Hi Vern!!!

Alice won something from InStyle magazine in this epeisode. Does anyone remember what? And where can we see the results?

M. McCulley did write about Alice in her blog at instyle.com . Was that it?

Posted by MC – August 23, 2006 12:11 AM

Hi Clive,

I just wanted to comment on the fact that of all the designers that have left the show, Joseph and Temple did so in a more gracious way than some of the others. The twins also left graciously. I was not wild about
Temple, but when she left she didn't cry and make a scene. I wish her well and hope that her dreams as a designstar will one day come true for her.

I really think Alice should be the next designstar, but as one of the other posters said the last three would make a great Design on a Dime team. They seem to all get along quite well.

I look forward to next season for a new group of designers to show America their styles. I would also like to see different judges for a change, such as Joan Steffen (Decorating Cents), Michelle Torres (Country Style), Kenneth Brown (reDesign), Candice Olsen (Divine Design), Sarah Richardson (Room Service).

Thanks for reading.

Posted by Janet – August 23, 2006 12:07 AM

Sooo glad that Temple is gone!!! I thought her design in this challenge lacked any imagination. Actually a little disappointed over all the designer's rooms. Lots of options but almost everybody chose to just slap paint over the walls to introduce color? David's was different. Had a little more vision. Liked Alice's Tiffany Blue box look. Tym's wasn't horrible. It just lacked something-not sure what. I always think of NYC as being really hip and maybe on the cutting edge. I was hoping to see more of that.

Hope things heat up now that it is down to the final 3.

Thanks goodness Temple is gone.

Posted by zandraa – August 22, 2006 11:35 PM

This week's challenge made sense, the playing field was level and fair. I loved seeing the presentations and room outcomes for a more whole picture of each designer's talent. I must add my voice to the chorus of people who were sorry to see Joseph leave. I thought his departure was weakly supported and each week I wonder what he would have done with the challenges. I am curious as to the format of the winning design star's show--or is it dependent on who wins? Clive, thanks for the blog--are you going to host an episode with your shirt off?
