Design Star

Welcome to Design Star Dish!

Posted by Design Star Blogger – July 16, 2007 9:45 AM

Welcome to DESIGN STAR DISH -- the blog about Design Star, for Design Star fans! Which means I am the fearless, er lucky, fan who will be leading the discussion on this blog! I am not just a Design Star fan...Nay, I am not just a Design Star Super Fan...I am THE ORIGINAL DESIGN STAR SUPER FAN, baby! (Just think of me as the Janis Dickinson of Design Star. You know, that former model who tells anyone and everyone who will listen that she was the first Super Model! I'm just like that except that I'm not scary and I just really, really love design. Anywho...)

Now a little about me -- then we'll get to the dish. In addition to my new Design Star gig, I am a counselor at a private high school during the day. I am a mother to the most wonderful 7-year-old little girl ever. I have a real home that I am constantly using tips I get from HGTV to improve and make more beautiful. I work out. (Truth: I worked out today, but who knows? Today could be the first day of the rest of my life!) I have a wonderful family, wonderful friends, wonderful life, blah, blah, blah... You get the drift. And...for better or for worse, I have been asked to lead this blog!!!! Somebody pinch me! So anyway, as my girl, Pink, would say... let's get this party started!...

For me, it all boils down to shoes. This is the story of my life. Have you ever seen that sign that says "Cinderella is proof...New shoes can change a girl's life?" Let's just say that this could be my mantra. And, if any of these designers came to my house, they will probably want to paint that on a wall or something...

Okay. Here's the thing. I'm not sure I can trust a designer to do a room in my home if I can't trust that he or she can pick out the perfect shoe for the occasion. What am I talking about, you ask? Well...I am one of those crazy fans who gets on HGTV.com and REALLY reads every word about the designers. And, true to form, I have already done this for the Design Star contestants. I have watched all of their interview video clips...I have read all of their Q and A's...AND...I looked at every picture in all of the designers' photo shoots...this is where the trouble began and I started thinking, "what is up with that shoe choice?...who would wear white socks with black shoes and pants?...I'm not sure sensible shoes are the answer when trying to look like a Design STAR!" But not all of my thoughts are on the negative side...sometimes I thought, "Okay then...there we go...effortlessly perfect shoe choice." or once or twice I even thought, "Now that is a fabulous shoe!" These are the things that keep me up at night. That said...

Great disappointment to see Kim winning! She's not a designer, she just tries to be a decorator, and, a boring one. No imagination, no creativity, zip, nada. Todd is the man! Great ideas, totally out of the box. If you are going to call an interior designer, why would you call Kim? What can she do for you that is not the typically , predictable look? Todd takes challenges, creates, innovates. that's what design is all about! She said: "The hairdresser who could" and I ask: "Who could What?"

i like the finale show and good luck kim

Kim has very, very little talent. We’ve seen her work, and her lack of talent speaks for itself. HGTV viewers were robbed. Todd radiates talent, creativity and stage presence. “Something is rotten in Denmark.” Ask all the other designers who they thought should be the next design star. Other than Will (duh) – they would all say Todd! Todd! Todd! HGTV and their viewers lose.

i could not believe Kim won. This is the person who put white carpet in a country home of a coal miner with kids. she did not finish the tile. what kind of show will she host? an unfinished, let's not think about it, shopping and stick it there show?

Congratulations Kim, I voted for you and thought that you did an outstanding job. You had great taste and a eye for color. You have a very sophisticated style. You might not have had formal training in design but you rocked it. Everyone else on the show has talent as well, they just need to do some tweeking. Sorry Robb but your attitude did do you in but in the end you took everything in stride. Keep working on your communication skills and getting along with others. Listen to their input and you may one daty be great. Sparkle Josh, you are a good designer and being that you live in Hendersonville, Tn and I live in Franklin, Tn. we are not very far apart and if i had oppertunity to have some designs done i would be more than happy to have you do them. Keep up the good work. Again CONGRADULATIONS KIM, you are great.

I HAVE WATCHED EVERY SHOW SINCE DESIGN STAR STARTED THIS SEASON. I AM THRILLED THAT KIM WON TONIGHT. I VOTED FOR HER. SHE HAS AN EXCELLENT
FACE FOR THE CAMERA. SHE IS ALWAYS SMILING.
SHE ALSO HAD THE BEST DESIGN THE LAST SHOW AGAINST TODD. HE WAS JUST TO WILD. GOOD LUCK KIM. SO GLAD YOU WON.......REALLY ENJOYED THIS SEASON OF DESIGN STAR.

Someone mentioned Rob.. What a jerk, I would not watch a show with him on it .. now Sparkle Josh is another matter he was so sweet .. pleasant to look at and actually had a personality, not just a few grandstanding tricks and same tired surfer boy retorts.
Sparkle on Josh you are a natural, you dont need HGTV to succeed .
Us girls from Middle America love you!

I am disappointed in the show this year. I DID NOT understand why two designers were eliminated each show. What was the hurry?? I would have preferred to savor each show with one elimination.
I do not feel each designer had the opportunity to show their talent. As a result, you have a winner who really had very few challenges to overcome. Which only asks the question...."Did the Winner really deserve the HGTV Design Show?"

I am rooting for KIM. She has more talent than Todd. She is versatile, listens to the client, not afraid to use other colors besides Blue [TODD!!], and she has a nice calm, yet, exciting personality for the show. I will watch the final show; however, I hope you will go back to the previous show format for Design Star 3.

i love digin star and colorsplash and design to sell and buyme and etc................. david bromstad is my favoite person. i am only 10 and i love HGTV.

Todd is interesting BUT I like Kim's designs better and think she's more flexible with different designs. Kim's designs are more livable and she has a more comfortable TV presence. I'm 12, and I have two classmates who watch this, too. I voted for David last year!! Anyway, I hope Kim wins.

To Will: Thank you for the gracious manner in which you accepted your cancellation last week. It was heart-warming to know that you were inspired by the young girl whose room you designed. While I'm sure you wanted to win, I'm glad that you used the Design Star experience to re-dedicate yourself to being designer and being the best you can be. I loved watching you on the show; you have a great sense of style. If you're ever in Oakland, CA, come on over and design my house! Love ya!

I'm a BIG FAN of this years Design Star. I think both Kim and Todd are both so incredibly talented in different ways. Kim is so comfortable with the camera and Todd is such a creative force as a carpenter. I wish you would find it a tie and have them both as co-hosts & co/designers. They both have so much to offer, but if I absolutely had to pick one over the other for only one spot on a show, it would have to be Kim. Her designs are beautiful. It's hard to believe she doesn't have any formal training, because she has a great eye for design. Good luck to them both.

I have been watching Design Star since Session One, David was my choice. Because of this program i took on a love for design and is now seeking on taking classes and have been doing some projects at home myself. I wanted to enter for Session Three but need more experience, i believe I can become the next design star. If David,Temple and Kim can do it, I know I can. Thanks Design Star for adding another chapter to my life. Now I am interested in Vern Yips' designs as well. Thanks again and God Bless.

Thanks HGTV for such good clean, interesting
and entertaining programing.
God's blessing to all at HGTV.

I've been a fan since David and Alice. This is the first time I get to vote. Kim you're great,love...love...love...your talent.
Go girl!!! I like Tod's youthful talent...But when it comes to glamor and sophistication, you've got it... I do believe if you needed to come up with something on a youthful theme you would be able to exicute...

Some tasks were uneven and unfair e.g. a kitchen for one and livingroom for another= not comparable tasks. The constant pressure of the clock does not necessarily enable the best designer to emerge. The judges should not have interferred in the final hotel suites design. If Kim wins I will not watch because she was almost as obnoxious as Robb in any of the "teamwork " sessions. She rode her way into the final because the judges liked her presentation skills and they found Will lacking in that skill. I thought we were seeking the best designer!! Will had better designs than Kim and 100% a better personality. Sure he needed some work on Presentation, but he was likable, friendly and has a great smile. Todd should win, but I think the competitions were poorly designed and resulted in unfair judgements.

I love design star, couldn't wait until this Sunday. They are both very talented but...I think Kim will win. She is so great with her designs. She has great people skills for TV.Great personality! She is so cute! I really enjoy Clive.. he is delightful to watch. He also is funny. I never miss designed to sell.
Good luck to you both, may the best person win!
I voted for David last year and was so happy when he won. I hope Kims dreams come true!

I thought the show was absolutely fantastic. In chosing Kim and tod for the final two desingers, the judges were on the money. I think Will is very talanted and may have a shot of being a host on HGTV with a little guidance on acting in hosting, but his design are fabulous. Rob ability for design is awsome he has great ideas, but he is not a people person. Too cooky. Wheather you like it or not we live with people. Can't we all just get alone lol. I also thought shows like this were fixed, but maybe not. Anyway I am voting for Tod

Thank you for giving me this opportunity to voice myslef

TEAM IS HILARIOUS....THEY TELL IT LIKE IT IS!!
HGTV NEEDS TO WIN AN OSCAR/EMMY AWARD....YOU HAVE MY VOTE!!!

Design Star is a great show, love it. I love Kim and I hope you select her as the new winner. I miss Will his designs were great. I wish it was Kim and Will I had to vote for. I miss Sparkle Josh he was great. NOW, you should have gotten rid of the fake David Bromstad/Todd who does Todd think he is; his designs are awful who wants a skate board ramp in their home or blue splash. I am so upset Todd made it to the finals. Do yourself a favor cancel Todd's show.

Posted by Karen – September 9, 2007 1:45 AM

David is so down to earth and great ideas, lets you know what's going on and why!Love his colors!! Kim is great. she is the next star. She has great hosting abilities..Does not get too ruffled and is great a natural!!Todd has trouble because he always wants to blow you away.Soooo
KIm is the winner!!!

Posted by Shirley Cusey – September 7, 2007 8:35 AM

I can't believe Kim is in the finals. She lacks talent and decorating ideas. Her show should of been cancelled l0 weeks ago.

Posted by Rosa Linda – September 5, 2007 11:38 PM

I just feel that this whole contest was fixed from the beginning. First, I was shocked that the judges didn't send Todd home after the skate board ramp, but then after they gave him the big prize for his hurricane painting, I knew that they wouldn't send him home for any reason. Even if he committed an ax murder on camera, they would have commented on what a lovely shade of red the blood was. I knew he would be one of the last two standing -- and he is. So, he will be the next Design Star. I don't even have much against him, except that he has acted like a spoiled child that knew he could do anything he wanted and get away with it. Here is something nice about him -- he is an excellent carpenter. If he got a show making fantasy back yards for 12 year olds, I would probably watch it.

I know this will never make it to the blog, because I am criticizing the judges and that is a no, no, - but at least the person who decides if comments are accepted or rejected will read it.

Well, this is my first year watching this show and I loved it!!!!!!it was like I was living my own dream(been a designer). Honestly the ones that I have selected are the ones that you have chosen so far. Both Tod and Kim are strong candidates, but I see Kim as a winner;because she has a classic, but yet modern way of design.

Posted by Lilly Rentas – September 3, 2007 11:31 PM

I wonder if HGTV does read the comments. I faithfully watch Color Splash and David gets better every week. This years stars don't seem to compare to the one we picked last year. Will and Josh had their shows cancelled and they were the ones I wanted to win. I don't think either Todd or Kim will last. Let's find some more Davids.

Posted by Marge – September 3, 2007 9:37 PM

I,too,am a big fan of Design Star. I agree with most everyone's comments about Robb. I would not have watched a show Robb would be on. I also agree that last year's show was much better, I love David! He could come to my house anytime! I love will also. I think his designs are very good and, I also think that with practice his hosting ability would have improved. I would much rather watch someone that is genuine and sincere than loud and cockey. I wish we could have seen more indiviual challenges. How can someone be chosen if you never really see their ability. I wil be pulling for Kim!

Hi, this message is for Will, Todd, Kim, David, and all the design stars out there, you are an insperation to me . I am 13 years old and I want to be a designer some day. I want to thank all of you and the judges because I have gathered a bunch of good tips off the show. I have drawlings of my own designs and hopefully I can show them to you some day. LOVE DESIGN STARS!!!! ONE OF YOUR YOUNGEST AND BIGGEST FANS LYDIA!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Lydia – September 3, 2007 4:34 PM

Will should have been allowed to go to the next level with Todd and Kim. His design was on point but his presentation needed work. Kim and Todd had design issues but good presentation. This should have been a 3 way tie. All 3 should have advanced and America should be allowed to pick the design star winner after the last challenge. That is what I expect to tune in to on next Sunday. If I don't see Will in it, I may not watch. I don't feel the judges made the best decision.

Posted by E – September 2, 2007 10:45 PM

Oh, how hard that sixth episode was...Will was absolutely huge in his defeat...what a wonderful person he is. Contrast that to Robb, that pathetic excuse for a human being, if it doesn't make you sick... I am happy for Kim and Todd, and wish Will all the best. They were all wonderful, and it's a shame that someone had to lose.

Posted by katvanatt – September 2, 2007 10:05 PM

I am so glad that robb is gone, he is such a hateful. i could not stand him. They should of gotten rid of him long ago.He has about the worst attitude i have ever seen on a program of this nature. So GOODBYE Robb, grow up and go take some classes on how to be a{atleast} a half way decent person

Posted by Lynne Rhea – September 1, 2007 11:23 PM

Dear lwatkins, great thinkers think alike! I'm a shoe maven myself, and you couldn't be more right about those shoes on those Design Stars! I think that the Judges should secretly base their decisions solely (pun intended) on the footwear selection of the star hopefuls!

Seriously folks, if a designer can't make appropriate footwear selections, they can't make good decisions...period.

Another thing: Clothes:
KIM: Why does Kim just wear SAFE black all the time. She is NOT a standout, she is hiding a lack of confidence. She is a whiner who is hiding a lack of personality in flat black just like her clothes.
TODD: "Hi, I'm Todd, I wanna-be David Bromstad." NO shirt has already been done Todd, and keep your sweaty arms down, I'm tired of seeing your armpits!
WILL: Very cute in a teddy-bear sort of way! Clothes fit nicely and with COLOR! Tasteful, appropriate, sensible, just like his approach to design! Five Stars for Will!

I LOVE HGTV DESIGNSTAR!

First time on this blog. I don't like any of the contestants this year as much as last year. Even though David was the stand out talent from the beginning, I miss some of the other personalities from last year. Temple, the single-mother beauty pagent queen, Alice, the southern sweetheart, the twins. Everyone this year seem kind of blah. Except for Robb, of course, who was just annoying.

Watch the Season 1 reruns on the website and see if you all agree! Watching them again, I realize that David was not only chosen for his incredible talent, but his awesome personality! He never put anyone down (even tried to play peacekeeper between Temple and Donna), he had respect and admiration for everyone he was competing against, and he was CONFIDENT but not COCKY! Something that Robb could have learned from if he wanted to win!

I don't think this year's winner will create as interesting a show, but I guess we'll see. My money is on Kim, but more for her level headed and warm personality and not her design talent.

Posted by L. Wille-Swink – August 30, 2007 3:48 PM

How can you keep Kim and let Robb go? Whoever would have been matched with Kim, she would have pulled down with her butt kissing up when she has truly been outdone, then back stabbing her first opportunity. You told Robb he had to learn to get along with people he works with. Did you even look at the video clips of the two of them? In the car, Robb made an overture to make up from her pout and she just kept her nose in the air and the silent treatment going. Kim knew that Robb was her strongest competition, so she had to try to discredit him. And the three of you fell for it. If you all let Kim wim, I will never watch any of her programs. And I am an avid viewer - watching from about 6:30PM to 12:30AM every night. Nita Reed

This is the first show in literally decades that I've had any interest in watching. Furthermore, my kids watch it with me! Cool! So glad Robb was asked to leave. An overdue decision, definately.
Unprofessional to be so unkind. Very encouraged to see Will and Kim still there. Good luck!

The old saying is: "those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. Those who can't, and can't teach, are critics." Man, let's all take a deep breath and remember this is at base a TV show, and as such is entertainment not a cause for shreiking outrage. Personally, I thought Scott had the most innate talent, and demonstrated ability of the eleven. But if I were in a position to just hand it to him after the introductions, wouldn't have been much of a show. I think the interest is actually higher this year, so HGTV can take a bow on that one. I've heard old men (like myself?) in gas stations discussing the difficulty of some of the challenges. I asked them, and they told me, they never heard of the show until this year. I guess this has turned into my own rant, but I have to say hats off to all three judges.!! I wouldn't put up with the poisonous public critique of every difficult decision. David said it best, maybe: "Competition, it gets Creepy.!!" I have fun with the show, that's good enough for me.

Posted by John - English, like Clive – August 28, 2007 11:51 AM

I am VERY DISSAPPOINTED in the show this time. Does anyone else feel this way??? We have only seen ONE individual show. All the rest have been team! AND, the Double Eliminations----YUK! Has there budget shrunk that much???? How can we judge a designer when its a group effort?I know that having a show means working as a team. And there are artistic differences BUT..if you have to fight as much as these contestants have then you have a Huge management problem. I loved the show last year! I feel like this year it was just thrown together. And if that's because of its in VEGAS, then please go back to the DESIGN Center. I am routing for Kim (I think). I can't wait to see the next show with individual homes.

Posted by Shellie – August 27, 2007 11:58 AM

Oh my . . . where to begin?? First of all I was glad to see Robb leave BUT . . . I think he should have been cancelled weeks ago! He was abusive, arrogant, egotistical - in a word OBNOXIOUS! I thought if I heard him brag one more time about how many kitchens he had done, I was going to scream! If you're as good as you're proclaiming, you don't leave a fridge out in the yard and a counter measured so inaccurately the hired worker has to patch your mistakes! I think he remained the week of August 19 because he'd pleased the "clients" with their ideal "Vegas wedding"!!!!! I thought the whole scene was Tacky Plus but it wasn't my wedding!!!!! Okay - the judges probably were obligated to put him through another week, however disappointed I think MANY were after reading blogs posted last night!

I think Todd is a "one-trick pony" - he apparently only knows how to produce over-the-top, one-of-a-kind jaw droppers but are his designs living-practical? I don't think so - he reduced the "living area" of the room last night to a few square feet, wasting much space! I can only imagine a game of charades being played on that small square living room! I see broken bones or worse! As I think back I can only think of one of Todd's actual designs I can only remember the skateboard thingy and the blue waves! Beyond that . . . what? He's a Malibu beach boy with an imagination run amok!!!!! Pleasant enough but arrogant too!

Will!!! I think Will has a real sense of "usable, yet beautiful design" and he's a worker bee! No, he hasn't gotten the camera time (at least not at the editor's hands!) but he's the one who actually makes a design pleasing to the eye! Contempory, yes, not my preference but his final designs are very very good! He has been totally over-shadowed by stronger personalities such as Robb and Todd but he's been the one who enabled them to shine in the result room!!!! I like Will - he's a more genteel personality and some coaching could make his presentations more "punchy"! His work impresses me a great deal!

Kim! I like Kim! She's a worker bee as well! I would like to see the designers have more opportunities to work their magic alone - not on a team! Robb was a TOTAL jerk throughout- and not only to Kim! He had been terribly rude to Will a few weeks ago! It was way past time to go - he stayed too long at the party! Judges fault, however difficult I know their deliberations must be!

I read one blogger who thought a show featuring Will and Kim would be good! I agree!!!!! He likes the more crisp linear lines and she likes a softer look - a compromise of styles could produce some interesting programming. They both are congenial, polite, and pleasant . . . the best team players on the entire initial roster!

I think the format should have included more individual assignments! Yes, ability to work well with others is important but not the highest requirement! They were chosen to exhibit their design abilities!

"Josh Sparkle" was an interesing player but I think his exit was timely! I liked the way Clive put it as Sparkle was eliminated - a "good shopper" but apparently lacking in design skills!

I admit to being disappointed this season and I have so looked forward to this series! I think Vern Yip is frustrated with some results as well! I think Vern is the quintessential expert! I can't wait for him new program. On Trading Spaces he was BY FAR the best designer. And it was obvious he was not happy with the slap-stick, hurried work they were forced to do on that show!

Posted by maumeemommy – August 27, 2007 10:35 AM

The show is totally entertaining to watch but I agree with comments about the actual talent the contestants have. Todd is a goof! He is NOT HOT and I wish he'd keep his tacky shirts on--so hilarious that he thinks chicks dig him. As offended as I am by his Skin shirts I rather see that than none at all. YOU ARE NOT DAVID BROMSTEAD!! DAVID is OFF THE CHAIN!!. He has more talent in his pinky than all these people combined! My favorite is Will because he is talented and genuine but he better amp up the charisma fast and show some leadership.

Posted by Espie – August 27, 2007 12:39 AM

I love Design Star. If Robb won I would not watch his show because he is such an ass. I love Kin, she would make a great host, I could watch her anytime, and I think she will really show he talent given a chance on last show. Todd is not interested in what the client wants - just what he wants to show off. Show Off, thats him.

Posted by Diann Halbert – August 27, 2007 12:01 AM

Thank God Rob is off the show, he was so immature and arrogant, calling Kim lame(grow up). I am not enjoying this year's competition as much as last year. there needs to be more individual projects,it becomes an injustice to someone that has to work with an unreasonable person. But the way it is surely showed everyone how arrogant Rob was, I know I never would have watched his show. My favorite of this season were Christina & Kim, Kim is talented and did a great job on her hosting presentation. Last year I picked David as 1st and Alice as 2nd. David has a great personality and boy is he talented & a great artist. I am looking forward to Vern's new show too.

I LOVE HGTV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been a fan for years. I am a self taught designer/decorator.I love seeing all the different concept people can bring to the table. I love David B. show. I think that Todd will win and present a great show.He is easy on the eyes and a great designer with great imgination.I really like Will but I do not know if he has what it takes to be a host. But I can tell that he knows what he is doing. He seems to be a sweet person. Can not wait to see the next show.

Posted by valeria ruth – August 26, 2007 10:36 PM

In the kitchen,I probably would have used a better grade of countertops--perhaps granit and there did need to be more accessories. In the living room I would probably have added two couches back to back instead of the stage affect. It was creative but not very functional. I do think that Todd will win in the end. It was a wise decision on the judges behalf to let the gentleman go who never saw his flaw as a leader and that is that you lead by example and not by dishing out orders.

Posted by linda – August 26, 2007 10:30 PM

Just watched Robb get dumped. I'm surprised but relieved. He was an ASS! After reading many others comments its obvious that had he won, no one would be watching his show. I think it will get down to Will and Kim. Todd is a bit over the edge. Cant wait to see the next episode!

Desin Stars is the best show on TV I love it And Watck Color Splash every week Rob is a know it all and thinks he is the only one that knows anything I hope The judges don't get rid of the last girl because if him.So she never done a kiychen that don't mean she doesn't know how it should look after all she is a girl

I will not be watching Design Star again. I will see who the last two are and if Kim or Will is in the finale, I will vote for them. A vote against Todd or Rob.

Another ex-fan of Design Star expressing my disappoint over the direction my ex favorite show has taken. I wouldn't have missed an episode last year, but won't watch another one this year. The tasteless Las Vegas wedding turned me off as well as my television.

I too have to jump on the Interior Design band wagon. HGTV should do a much better job in pre-qualifying their contestants and or anyone that is on any of their many facets to the general public when it comes to using the words "Interior Designer" as to describe one's title. As many have said in regards to this subject, thus I don't need to repeat in full detail, the Education, NCIDQ Exam (Passing), and Continuing Education is required by many states; some of which some of the current contestants on "Decorating Star" are from, in order to use the title "Interior Designer" legally. By not doing proper research, HGTV is just as liable to fines from the State boards which monitor the Interior Design professionals, and should immediately correct any and all usages in which they misrepresent Interior Designers and the Interior Design profession. In doing such, HGTV and their shows will not only represent the Interior Design profession correctly, but also give much needed creditability to their shows and themselves in being one of the largest venues to the general public in the arena of Design. I like the concept of Design Star and would like to apply to be a contestant in hopes of having my own show one day on HGTV; but not under the current "casting" and formating that is represented. Vern Yip of anyone being an Architect (If he is truly licensed???) should understand and stand up for not only his profession but also the Interior Design profession, licensing exams and what it truly takes in the combined years of Education, Experience, and Exams to get to the level of a true Design Professional. I too would like to hear from HGTV on their thoughts to my comments along with my fellow Licensed Interior Designers voicing their opinions.
Thank you for this opportunity to "hear" my voice...

Robb is totally obnoxious. If he wins, I certainly will not watch his show. His designs are cheap, tawdry, and downright tacky; that's why he was able to please the wedding duo - they, too are tacky. That was the most disgusting display of "trashy" I've ever seen. I wouldn't let him in my house to design for my dog. And, his attitude toward Will is ridiculous; Will worked very hard on that mess even though he didn't really buy into the design.

I'd like to see the final come down to Kim and Will. Todd doesn't have a very good persona either, and his childish antics are ridiculous.

The room that Robb did was impudent; it looked like he was making fun of some charismatic here and now Christian Church. Why choose a huge cross?

You've had no one on Design Star this year with the talent and class of David and Alice. The only ones (outside of Kim and Will) who did have class have all gone.

The show leaves much to be desired this year. And, definitely, Robb is not quality or class.

Posted by Margie Martin – August 25, 2007 4:14 PM

Is it just me or does anyone else notice that Robb looks, sounds,
and acts like "Bulldog" on "Fraser"? In the beginning I thot it was!
Guess everyone has a clone somewhere!!

I love Design Star!! I wouldn't miss an episode. I watched every single one last year and this year I don't intend to miss either. However, I am really disappointed that Sparkle Josh is gone. I think the next episodes are not going to be as fun as the previous ones without him. I think Will is very professional, I'm pulling for him. Kim has suprised me and I like her too. You can dump the other two. Todd is too matcho and Rob is crass and abrasive. I double he will win because everybody hates him.

Posted by Linda Wilson – August 22, 2007 12:33 PM

There were so many good designers last season, although I picked David as the standout from the beginning. I am not nearly as excited about the designers this time, but also some of the situations have been not nearly as "real world". I am having a very hard time discerning the real talent in the contestants and sometimes that is due to the challenges and sometimes it is due to the wierdness of the designers.

Posted by Linda Pidgeon – August 21, 2007 11:24 PM

What a disappointing season. I can't believe they let Christina and Sparkle go. The judges look like they are more interested in sports areas and what a home looks like after hurricanes. Our beach home looked exactly like Todds room after a hurricane. I never realized that was good design. Christina had great taste. I would never put a skateboard ramp in my home and call it good taste. Robb does absolutely nothing and leaves it up to everyone else to execute his ideas so his design is not his. It is how everyone precives his designs. I am very disappointed in this year designs assignments. No one decorates completely from the $ store and every bride has her own ideas. That was a tacky reception we would have made fun of it for years to come. People with poor tast picked a designer with poor taste. There really isn't much left. Both Todd and Robb have won individual records and will be the two finalist. I will not watch their shows, Rob presonality leaves a lot to be desired and Todd designs are for the outside. I cannot believe that Sparkle Josh was cancelled. He was the life of the show. Todd is a cocky bore and the other show-off has such a limited appeal. Now I sure hope that Will stays on. I would surely watch his show!!!!!

Hello!!Some wedding. A wedding is a huge undertaking. The colors that the couple chose were way out.But not my call. Why is everyone crucifying Mr.Robb??? Since the first show most of the contestants have been against him.Last night however Rob meshed with the couples desires.I was so delighted to see everyone working together as a unit.Except Will.Like it or not Will has a huge chip on his shoulder. How can he ever have his on show?It would be a true injustice for the network. HI! You know, it is so refreshing to come in here and see my thoughts 'mirrored'. I truly thought that I was dismayed by myself. The first episode where the designers had to design their living space I figured was a fluke--you know, Robb blaming everyone but himself for all the mishaps, but it seems to have become common practice. And the .99 episode in which he HID push lights from his co-designers? My mouth hung open. This says many things to me, though: 1, he is not confident in his own skills so he feels he has to win by trickery and deceit; 2, he is not a trustworthy or reliable person. I would be concerned with him being a regular designer with his own show--his morals and values seem to be skewed; and 3, why didn't the judges or the host call Robb to the carpet on that? It seemed to me to be a violation of what should have been basic rules of the contest--and I agree, with the several bloggers who said that they would not watch his show--I'm with you. HGTV might lose money on this one, if he wins. Who wants to advertise on a show that no one wants to watch because no one likes the person? That's 'advertising suicide'....whew, I feel better!

Posted by Mahweat – August 20, 2007 12:38 PM

If this space could reflect how I feel about the last show there would be flames and this space would be red!!!To say I am dissapointed it this Design Star is the understatment of the year. Josh "Sparkle" was the best you had and you kept Todd and Robb. Someone hit the cancel button and lets start over somewhere other than Tacky City in the middle of the sand.I will not be watching next week,I just received a copy of the new Harry Potter and will be making better use of my time.

I think the judges are biased. Todd and Robb should have been gone a long time ago. Both are arrogant and have yet to impress me as designers. I have never seen such poor character in a person as Robb. Those two can certainly learn from the other individuals on the show.

Posted by P Alexander – August 20, 2007 2:26 AM

I hate that they are eliminating two designers on each show. What's their rush to end the show?

Each week I pray that Robb (the ultimate jerk) will be eliminated. He is so irritating. He lies and blames everyone else for anything gone wrong, and claims everything good done was by him. He obviously had it in for Will. He certainly lied about Will being the weakest link on the bridal reception show. He obviously was not pleased when Will wasn't sent home.

I don't care how good his designs are, he is despicable and I hope they consider that before they give him his own show. If Robb happens to win the show, we will definitely not be watching it in my home.

Posted by sherryb – August 19, 2007 11:35 PM

Rob is arrogant and extremely offensive. The
CEO of a project leads by example and takes responsibility for his design when things aren't going well. Instead he hangs his crew out to dry. I've not seen one design that has classic longlasting appeal or even one that I would
consider for a second much less want to live with.
Todd is way over the top. Josh should get a job
designing bathhouses. I've yet to see any classic
design. Its all flash in the pan glitter and
I'm surprised the judges are going for it.

I will just say this, if Rob wins they have lost a viewer. Any one else will be fine but this man makes me so angry I want to turn the darn TV off.

OK, I enjoyed the first show. I voted for David and I thrilled that he won. I like his show and I think he will do well as the 1st designstar.
But, this year it is a JOKE. I believe they could have chossen Will Smith and sent the rest home. And saved us and them alot of trouble. I watch alot of the shows on HGTV. The new ones they have on this year show are not of the same calabur. This is my thoughts on the ssecond season.

I watched the show where they all did their little rooms, and I don't know what the judges were thinking giving the big prize to surfer boy. I thought the idea was to do a room that someone would like to sit in and feel comfortable. Would any of you judges feel comfortable sitting in that mess? I was sure Christina would win. Her room was beautiful. Are you going for the halloween look this year?

IT takes 11 to tangle but only one to rumble.
after see all the episode, so far i have a very good perspective about whos gonna win this competition. I know we're on the tight spot now cuz all the designers left are good still but there're bout 2 that will weaken and then then get eliminated. Am sure that Will Smith and josh j. will be one of the last ones in the competition.
!!!!!!!!! but if you want to know who'll win you gotta watch the show!!!!!!!!!!!

Love and admire Vern Yip. I was quite disappointed with this week's Wave Winner. Can't wait to see when he has to design a real room. It was a hard choice for the Judge's this week. Almost everyone brought their game. 99cent stores can do it.

Christina is trying to be another Temple and succeeding. Let's hope she leaves soon. I don't ever see her with a show. Her grammar is so incorrect that every word on a tv program would have to be written for her.

You sent the wrong person home.Adriana has more skill's than any one there. She was the next David B.I know everyone else can hire someone to do their dirty work cutting' sawing, measuring and cleaning up.But Adriana had all the skill's to do these thing's and still design a beautiful home.I am so unhappy with this. Not all of us want to live on the edge.I don't want one side of my space to look like a hurricane hit.Onley leaving one table.No.And I don't have anything against Mr Srarkle from Tennessee personialy. But!If I could bring Adriana to the Atlanta burb's myself to help me finish our remodal I sure would.I knew David was the one last year the minuate I saw him.And I know Adriana was the one this year.Guess I will just go home with Adriana.Edythe Smith.

Ok I Just finished watching the Dollar store show and I am so disappointed at the way they tossed off the wrong people this week Tim should have gone that room was a wreck I can believe anyone would ever hire him to do a room in there house ever since the show started he has done something odd or far out and I just cant believe not only didnt they not kick him off they reward him god and someone needs to tell him to put his shirt on he isnt David not in anyway in talent or body or class .And then Last week they Tossed off Poor Josh who has more talent in his small finger the Rob has in his whole bald head if he had then one of the true talents ANDREA wouldnt have been tossed off tonight she did a great job tonight but instead they abused her told her room didnt make sense but they rewarded Tim I dont understand the Judges this year I am starting to think maybe I am wasting my time wating this show and I loved the show last year this year I dont see a clear winner right from the start last year it was clear that David was very talented but now nothing its strange we shall see who will be the winner maybe TIM hmmm ? he seems to be the judges favorite anyway . GOOD LUCK WITH THAT SHOW .

With interest I read some of the postings. I have to agree that David Bromstad, last year's winner has shown to be a shiny star, I watch Color Splash with interest, for he is a awesome designer, with great ideas for the owners, he at least listens to their needs BRAVO for another season I look forward to watching him, as he has style. This year's Designer Star is interesting to say the least, and watch with great interest to the new designer, for so far only a few have caught my interest. Looking forward to watch and see who will shine as David did last year.

Posted by DDJ – August 12, 2007 2:46 AM

I see that I'm not the only one who thinks the designers were more talented last year and I can only imagine one or two of these having their own show--wouldn't you want 11 people that could all be polished enough to have their own show? From what I'm seeing, not many are well rounded enough to be designers with their own show. I'm also a little disappointed that while we see them interact together, I haven't seen each one really showcased with enough of what they can do. Little snippets aren't enough. Show them putting the room together each part step by step and less of the crying/interviewing. I watch for the "design" and the ideas - not the drama!

I live on HGTV, and I love Design star. I can't stomach that stuck up, domineering, over-powering, Neeraja (the Temple clone), and I saw right through that fake-whiney, self-glorifying, Christina (the Vanessa clone)!

I wish "4" contestants could had been eliminated the first time; Neeraja, Christina, and that AGGRAVATIN' Robb! Though, Neeraja bluntly stated that she didn't want to work with that "difficult" Robb, she was just like him.. But, she was mighty right! I agree with her calling it like it is, and with Will bringing it on home! everybody else, except those two, sat up there (behind the scenes) and kept quiet. But, after Will chimed in with the whole truth, to Robb, about himself, he (Robb) wimped on out.. Trying to, then, sound dignified, innocent, victimized, and pious!

..After he'd said that (paraphrased) "he's representing a real man.. Because, we know that men who do home designs and decorating, aren't men's men!" And let's not forget that number "4", Todd! He wouldn't even defend his buddy, because, he used and out-smarted him, to gain his loud assistance in scaring oJosh half to death!

Josh, from the Midwest, and (surprising) Kim, of NEW YORK! need to get some balls! He was scared of that sickening, bullying, don't give a hoot, Robb, and that know-it-all, manipulating Todd! And she was sucking up to Miss Snobgrass, Neeraja, in trying to keep the peace with her overextending boss! (But, Josh; the green artist, was just eliminated, by getting his Show CANCELED, so forget him (the Joseph clone)!

And it's bad and sad, because, he probably has great design ideas. However, you can't be Powerful & Pitiful at the same time. Those other 2 guys bullied him, while he visibly showed discontent & fear, through smiles and shutting up! They were even all up in Hechinger, Home Depot, Big Lots, or some store, still threatening greenJosh: "It's 2 of us and just 1 of you, and the others aren't here. So, the majority rules!" That was terrible!

I guess Po' green-TwinCities-organic-JOSH felt all alone, and had no other choice! Sheeeshhhh! I'm a woman, and I would have had fear of those two bullying men possibly physically harming me, too.. But, Lord knows, they would have HAD TO! Because, ain't no way in hell, would I had let ANYBODY take over my spot, that was officially entrusted to me, with my being held responsible! They were on national television.. what were they going to do??

organicJosh had his big chance of back-up at the very beginning, with his other 2 assistants there to stand with him. But noooo; he takes off shopping with those same two take-over guys! Then, at the judges' line-up, Robb actually lied, and responded to Judge Vern, that Josh was actually giving the orders!
And oJosh still stood right there, with his head cocked to one side, and let that "man's man" (Robb) tell that great big lie-- and HE was the one who got Canceled, while Robb (AND) Todd remained!

That is one thing that I did admire about Neeraja.. ..She didn't let NOBODY boss her around, even if she did mess up! (Though, she did take babyboy Scott under her wings and petted him up. I suppose she knew that those others weren't going to kiss-up to her.. while "she thought" that faking Scott was! His facial expression was of a quick "relief smirk" when her show got canceled!)

..But, anyway, back to brave Neeraja.. She was in-charge, she stayed in-charge, and she accepted full blame for being 'her own' stupid! But, come on now, how she gone -half paint- a big ol' wall? She used the most glaring colors alive, then stopped'em 3-quarters of the way up a huge wall, behind long winding stairs, that your eyes will pop-onto, 30 minutes before you'd even AR-RIVE at the house!

THENNNNN, she went out and bought a whole bunch of bright, glistening decorations and just plopped'em all around that big beautiful bar, at the foot of the stairs! But, the woman wouldn't even buy not ONE bar stool for the people to sit on! By the time they get dizzy from looking at that big loud partial paint job, while descending all of those stairs, they're gonna need SOMETHING to sit on.. DAMN!

Okay, Neeraja did say that "her mother" is her biggest fan. But I wonder, did "her mother" tell her that "there will be days like this!" Well, Alright Then.. Anyway, they sent her packing, right along with organicJosh! Being tough is one thing, but, you've still got to know what you're doing! She hit it on being tough, but she missed it on knowing what she was doing! As for organicJosh, he missed being tough, and "missed-out" on knowing what he was doing.. Only because, he didn't even get to do what "he" wanted to do!

Scott really needs to stop groping for attention, by doing all of that pity-party crying (FAKE)! --My back hurts, my finger's bleeding, my nose is about to fall off, everybody understands and is relieving me of hard work, MY HEAD IS JUS'A SWEAT'N, OOOOHH I CAN'T WALK, when is the doctor coming, Wahhhhh!-- Ooooh, I was just REEEEAAL sick'o him! And, it's funny, but, that guy who looks like Ed Begley, Jr, (you know, Todd) just doesn't stand-out on "any" level (to me), except, when his old self stuck a youth-oriented skate ramp in a dining area- how ignorant! Oh yeah, please, just GET RID OF Adriana, another rock-throwing (Vanessa, Christina, & Robb), -pick me, pick me- (sounding like annoying Meredith, of "Grey's Anatomy) bully! A real SICK'N combination of Temple "AND" Vanessa)! But, like Temple & Vanessa, she too was talented in what she did, (all of that individual carpentry (even if "it was" cheesy)! ..But she isn't Show Host material.

If I could choose, right now, (on EVERYTHING), the last two standing will be sparkleJosh & Will Smith!
Besides CLIENTS loving their work, friendliness, speed, confidence, enthusiasm, and camaraderie, TV AUDIENCES WILL BEG FOR MORE! Both of them are friendly, but self-starters, yet, team players. sparkleJosh kept his mouth closed, but showed disbelief in Neeraja's unattainable plans.. While he just went right on and shopped & saved, and created his part of his team's design, to be the best of both teams! Will Smith verbally expressed himself to OrganicJosh's self-made bosses tagteam (Robb & Todd), that their large family needs pantry space more than their elaborate faux decorations! While OrganicJosh, their official boss/Team leader, stood right there and heard the whole thing, but wouldn't speak up!

He (Will) showed concern for pleasing the client and fulfilling their needs, as well as making their space eye-pleasing. In fact, both of them (Will & Josh) should win "DESIGN STAR", and get a Show together-"Will & Josh SuperStyle!" Let each of them (as the boss), alternate shows or alternate weeks.. You know, like "The Junk Brothers!" These two are a joy to watch, and their works, so far, have shown to be the best yet!

P.S. I believe there's a strong audience & market for Lisa's style, as well as for her exuberant personality. Her quick thinking, for designing an almost cast-off area; A DARN GARAGE DOOR ENTRANCE/EXIT!: may have been "an initial" visual confusion.. But, it demonstrated her on-the-spot Delaware Valley/New York City "Shabby-Chic" flare! Everything wasn't perfect, but the space really did turn out to be functional. Besides there being some place to actually sit (and probably have a cigarette, in the fresh air, without smoking up the whole house), the view was very interesting and quite relaxing, while waiting for your ride!

I hope HGTV won't just forget about her. Send her across the way to work with Joan Steffend or Gail O'neil, because, the friendly, sunshine lady does have colorful, youthful, and bring-it-on talent!

But hey, that's Reality TV and I still simply love this show. And, regardless to all of the negative, but honest, remarks that I've made about some of the contestants, I still admire their courage, spirit, and contributions. And, I admire the judges, because their job isn't easy. And, I LOVE Clive (& Lisa LaPorta)LOL!

I have to agree with a lot of the people that are posting their opinions. Last year's group was more qualified than this year's contestants.

Was it so difficult to find young, competent talent for this show with at least some design credentials?

Posted by RRkershaw – August 8, 2007 5:02 PM

I tried watching Design Star upon the recommendation of a friend but became irritated quickly when I saw that the "designers" were expected to know how to lay tile and finish the job in an unreasonable time frame. Professional tile installers spend years honing their craft and I have yet to see an interior designer show up to a job and take over the tile installation. Who came up with this premise??? Designers are just that. Not tradesmen.

This is my first time posting here so bear with me. I watched the show faithfully last year and will do so this year. I agree with a lot of the comments posted as regards to leve of talent with this group of contestants. I didn't understand Lisa's concept for the entryway but having seen her portfolio on the fist episode (Making the Count) she does have talent and should have been given a second chance. Robb I disliked from day one. It's all about him and he knows it all, done it all, and is better than anyone else. Neeraja blew the time table on the kitchen re-do but should have been given another chance. Sparkle Josh and Will make a great team! I live in Tennessee so I'm partial to Sparkle Josh and think he is very creative. The other three ladies I'm not too sure of. Maybe with this week's episode where they have their own space to design, will show their talents. Or lack of.

Vern does seem to be a little more critical this year. Perhaps because these contestants are supposed to be somewhat "professional" and he's disappointed in what he's seeing from them. Only time will tell.

Last years designers seemed to be more qualified to be HGTVs Design Star than the group selected for this year. I can't believe that ALL of these people make a living as Interior Designers. And I can't believe there was not ONE quilified Designer in Las Vegas selected for this years show.

I don't know how much more of the crying I can take. These people need to get a grip and grow up. And Scott, Oh my god...This man can bearly speak without breaking into tears. What a Cry Baby.

Thats not to say that the show is a complete waste. A few of this years contestants , at this point, have shown a glimmer of design style and ability. I like Todd, Will and Sparkle Josh. They seem to be the most talanted and professional among the men. I hope that Robb is the next one to have his show cancelled. He has no class, arrogrant and does'nt work well with others. At this point, I think that Christina and Kim are the most talanted among the women. We will see...

I know that HGTV had more than 2000 applications for this season and I was one of them. I know that my talant and professionalism far exceeds most of this years contestants. I hope that next year HGTV selects mature Designers that are talanted, professional and most of all respectful. Otherwise, they will loose a lot of viewrs because most reasonable people are not interested in the DRAMA all the time. We want to see Talant, Design Style, Professionalism, and Stars.

First time to write in, but had to say this. Last years show was great never missed it. Backed Alice until the last show. David clearly out did her. This years show is the worst. No need to watch anymore. Will should win. Josh is good Will is better. The rest should have stayed at home. The producers clearly went for the drama and not the talent this year. I expect better when I watch hgtv. Shame on all of you. If you do this again next year please get qualified people. They don't have to be designers but stable mature people with the simplest ideas of color form and function would be lovely.

I am addicted to your show. My only regret is that the show contains too many young contestants. I would love to see some older contestants. I want to be a new contestant on your next show.

Sincerely,

I watched last year Design Star, and I can say that the designers were more competent than the ones that they have this year. You had some good ones, Of course David B was by far the most talented of them all.
This year they are lousy. in general. no wonder that the judges are loosing their patience with them and seem rude.
I would too. I would cancel all of them

Posted by Rita Kershaw – August 6, 2007 2:33 PM

Oh yah, I forgot to mention...
What was that Tuscan kitchen supposed to be...it looked like a bad theme motel. Obviously these people had not idea what Tuscan style looked like for real.
I just read some comments about the judges being hard on these contestants...I am sorry they are a being extremely gentel. I would be yelling at them to go home and do some research.

Posted by Mary Ann Salomone – August 6, 2007 12:43 PM

WHERE DID YOU FIND THESE BOZOS???? Last season, at least I had respect for the candidates and it was clear they all had talent. Not one of these contestants have as much talent in their whole being as David Bromberg has in his left pinkie. They are all crying all the time...no strength of character!!!
WITH ALL THE TALENTED PEOPLE OUT THERE...YOU CHOOSE THESE WHIMPS!!!!

In general, it seems to me that something has changed in your programing department...because the high calibar of this channel is playing down the lowest common denominater.

COLOR CORRRECTION???? Come ON...this woman is not a designer...she is an actress who is reading lines. SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!

Very disappointed,
Mary Ann Salomone

I think that last year was good. It was smart to choose David Bromstad. If you want to impress me,
choose Josh Johnson. I watched the second episode and he did an excellent Dining Room.
Choose Josh J.

i am so excited. i love will smith he has what it takes to keep the viewers watching i am amazed @ how down to earth he is and doesnt act like he is the bomb digady!!. i think he will win as long as he keep up the creativity. he is different and HGTV needs different.

How about turning the tables and BOUNCING Vern Yip in lieu of the designers? He's self important and arrogant. It's astonishing because he is an actual designer! One would think he would have a sense of empathy and sensitivity when doling out constructive criticism. He sits up on his throne, judging like a petulant titan - implying that HE is perfect and never ever made any mistakes. Yes, he is there to judge, but must it be in a such a nasty, offensive manner?

When the home owners actually loved their newly designed kitchens and dining rooms, Vern Yip, who painfully disagreed, was angry with them for complimenting the designers. He deigned to keep his mouth shut - lest he offend them. Yet, his body language said it all - his arms were crossed on his chest in a judgmental manner. He was actually LOOKING DOWN on the home owners for "their lack of taste." The designers satified their clients - which was the goal of the challenge.

I would suggest that Vern tone it down and show humanity. After seeing him in action - I would never buy any of his products and I'm sure others feel the same way.

As for Vern's designs - they lack warmth, like the designer himself. They are remarkably effective, but they do not have an "inviting" quality.

I have been a loyal viewer of HGTV for years.
I did not watch Design Star last year but began
watching David Bromstad's show and based on his
talent decided to watch the competition this time around. Of course I love Clive Pearse.
The judges are great and the overall classy way that the whole thing is handled is wonderful.
The first night of competition????.....WOW...great fun but definitely no big surprises. The judges were correct...completely...Lisa's work would have been great in a gallery showing as artwork and
I am certain would have many fans...but as a functioning design of a living space???? Well is was just ridiculous. It was probably a toss up between her, Neeraja and "Green Josh" and you can rest assured that these last two will be gone soon, because unless a miracle of talent and creativity is bestowed upon them.....please they just are not all they believe themselves to be. Neeraja...a word of advice...if all you can do is decorate a space...for goodness sake make it spectacular...this is national TV and we are all watching. However if you want to learn to design a space try partnering with someone who knows how to design and then.....LISTEN TO THEM.
By the way I am a resident of LAS VEGAS....that's LAS VEGAS....not VEGAS....love this show......glad you came to our city this year.

ERROR IN JUDGEMENT: I would like to say that I saw the first design episode for a second time, and really looked at all the designs.

I made an error giving a quick judgement regarding Lisa's design. Once I was able to focus on the "design aspect" of the show, I realized Lisa had a lot of great details. I especially loved her moss rocks, and how she painted the names backwards on the wall, and her color choices. The dark wooden sticks on the wall, etc.

The camera sometimes doesn't show the details especially when they are smaller. Though I felt it wasn't functional, it was very inventive!

So Lisa, I apologize for making a quick judgement about your design. You definitely didn't deserve to go.

Design is always in the eye of the beholder. It is art, it is creative, it is the personality who creates it. Lisa definitely was all those things.

Posted by Joel – August 4, 2007 4:05 PM

I just didn't feel the love for this seasons pick of designers.I knew that Lisa would be the first to go, then Neeraja, then josh, then Robb.I preferred last years format. I had to really strain to see the video reults of the designs. And, are these people really designers? I don't think I would hire any of them. Why can't this show get qualified, registered, Interior Designers to compete and show us what real designers can do.

Posted by Carolyn – August 4, 2007 3:22 AM

Dear Chris:

Do you know Neeraja? No.
Do you know the specifics on the show? No.
Do you judge too quickly? Yes.
Do you take it for granted just because "what you see on TV" - you think it is true? Yes.

I am not making any excuses on Neeraja. She did work "ALONE" on her project. Unlike everyone else except for Lisa who lost.

What did you expect Neeraja to do by herself? Demo the bar in (probably in 3 (8) hour shifts she had to work!

Some people had "3" people working on their project, and one of the winners for that challenge made a skateboarding ramp in the middle of the living room. Whoooopppppppeee! and built a table in the posh pit which covered up the WHOLE DESIGN AESTHETIC of that area. Which I think Vern was completely wrong on this area.

Chris, lets see you pick out the right accessories, right color choices and right placement. Neeraja did! furthermore accessories are hard to look good on television, AND NEERAJA MADE THEM LOOK FANTASTIC!

Lets see you do it? You have no idea what they are going through, or probably their time limitations or anything.

ALL YOU SEE IS WHAT THE EDITORS WANT YOU TO SEE.

I cannot stand people who make quick judgements on people they don't even know.

There are some personalities I do not like on the show, but I am not going to say rude thing about their personality or who they are. Because I do not KNOW THEM!

One more thing on a positive note to (Josh Sparkle)---you are a doll!...and love your outlook on the world and design!

Posted by Joel – August 3, 2007 11:22 PM

Mr Patrick, as far as I can see your e-mail is doing nothing but making excuses for Neeraja. Perhaps this, perhaps that. The woman is a talentless hack with a superiority complex.

Posted by Chris – August 1, 2007 10:44 PM

I am tired of hearing the negative comments regarding Neeraja. Especially the personal ones. Do you know her?...Do you know her passion?...NO! You see what the editors of "Design Star" decided to leave for the airwaves.

Lisa did deserve to get kicked off. Her space was a joke and not functional. It looked like a Army boot camp, and furthermore what was with the telephone sculpture?...It would look great in a 500 sq. foot studio in SOHO, not in a gigantic entry way to a 4000 sq. ft. penthouse.

Neeraja had a great color choice for the bar and her accessories and placement were wonderful!

There were no stools, but you don't know why she didn't get stools, or the reason behind it. My possible assumption is that there were a lot of shops that didn't have the creativity or design that she needed for that bar....Trust me in my town where I have lived now for 7.5 years I STILL CAN'T FIND STOOLS FOR MY HOUSE. Because there is so many shops with bad taste.

Commenting on her paint job - Was great color choice, where she didn't finish it was probably because she didn't have a "professional firemans ladder to get up there!"...and she didn't want to break her neck.

By seeing so far what I have with Neerajas apartment on "Design Star" and her photostyling, etc. she is very, very talented.

Give her a chance....and to you Neeraja! grabbing the money in the paint can to take charge of the budget. 'YOU GO GIRL'...this ain't a popularity contest, this is a competitive show where you are going for it all.

Neeraja, is real, raw, and is there to do the job! and not pussy foot around.

Posted by Joel Patrick – August 1, 2007 5:32 PM

I can't believe they actually kicked off Lisa and not Neeraja. I personally loved Lisa's space. It was fun and original (normally I don't even like modern design). If it happened to be a little too "sculptural" and not functional enough well so what! The space was basically a HALLWAY! Lisa made it into something fun and there was seating incorporated into the place. What exactly did they want a dining table in the middle? a TV against the garage door? Puhlease!! Now, can we talk about Neeraja? What exactly did she do to the space? All I could see was a bad paint job and a mirror to the left of the bar? Where the h___ were the chairs? I'm still in shock over it and if the judges continue to show such poor judgement I think I might just change the channel rather than get hurtburn from their unpalatable decisions.

Posted by Chris – July 31, 2007 10:32 PM

What in the world were they thinking?! They kicked off Lisa ... and let Neeraja stay?!! What did Neeraja do? ANYTHING? NOPE! NOTHING! First, she seems to be the chachky (spelling?) queen of the second season (remember season one?). I mean, all she did was BUY things! And did y'all believe she said, "There really wasn't much I could do with the space." HUH?! How did they let her get away with that?! That space was one of the BEST in the challenge! Soooo dramatic! She's awful! At least Lisa DID something! And her space was, as has been pointed out, nothing more than a pass-through! I'd much rather watch Lisa's designs each week than some chachky queen who does nothing -- and can't even buy a friggin' bar stool, for God's sake! Who can use the space without bar stools? And, I'm sorry, but the dude who did the skate board ramp -- what in the world is up w'dat?! Did he even think about anyone but himself? Who else can use it? All he cared about was one person - me me me! And he didn't design anything. And Robb? Did he even do anything either? Oh, yeah, he hung a car door and barked about his partner the whole time. Wow! What talent! I liked the pit, but I must say that the room designed by Josh (sparkle) and Will was wonderful! Good job, boys! My advice to these two guys is - stay as kind as you can be, try to get along with everyone, and just design your hearts out! STAY FOCUSED! You'll make it through to the end!

Posted by kathy – July 31, 2007 12:02 PM

This only the 2nd show, but I already know Neeraja WILL NOT get my vote. She has a bad attitude and she was rude grabbing the money paint can from Kim.

Posted by Judith Dyson – July 31, 2007 7:11 AM

Just want to say that I love David Bromstad and the format of his show, Color Splash. I hope David has a long future with HGTV. His personality and mannerisms are a pleasure to watch. He is one of the few that takes the homeowners into consideration when designing the space and that makes his show feel genuine. There have been a couple of missteps but all in all I think he is doing a terrific job. I watched the sneak preview of Color Correction last night and it is just another show where the host makes all the decisions and the homeowners are just cheerleaders, and reluctant ones I thought last night. I did not like that kitchen redo and I don't think the homeowners liked it either. Thanks for letting us vent our thoughts.

Posted by Denise – July 30, 2007 11:41 PM

I am not sure how the judges are making their decisions but obviously creativity is not one of the categories. I thought Lisa's design was wonderful and new. I've watched hgtv for years and it's all getting pretty basic. I'm ready for new ideas and talent. Lisa's design to me was one of the best. Yes some of the designs were pretty but anyone can go into pier one and buy matching products. She was one of the most creative and I was actually looking forward to seeing more of her designs after I saw her first. I guess I'll have to go to the restaurants she designs.

Posted by AMBER – July 30, 2007 11:29 PM

Please someone tell me why the format of the show has been changed? The judges viewing the rooms via a TV screen is ridiculous, we as viewers do not get to see enough of the finished rooms this way, because the camera shots are not as good, It was much more intriguing watching the expressions of the judges and wondering what their reactions would be when they sat on couches, opened drawers etc. It was also interesting watching the nervousness of the designers as their rooms were being examined. Still love the show but prefer the old format. Why change something when it works.

Posted by Beverly – July 30, 2007 11:29 PM

Am I the only one who thinks they kicked off the wrong designer Sunday night? Lisa had a pass- through space to design for Pete's sake. No one would hang around it anyway, but they would get a fun show on their way through. I think she deserves another chance. Certainly above Neeraja who put pink bulbs in the chandelier??? and couldn't find ANY bar stools? Puleeze. Lisa sure put more work into her space than Rob who criticized his partner's work while he hung a car door (???). What is up with that!

Posted by MaryO – July 30, 2007 6:35 PM

I'm glad to see that Design Star has returned, but I can't help like this season reminds me of a "Real World" cast. Although the stakes are higher along with the budget, I have yet you be blown away by any of the designs. I'm still looking for that "WOW" factor.

Posted by Joseph – July 30, 2007 5:16 PM

I to am a big fan. Especially when I knew that Vern would be judging. He is such a great person. I cannot be disturbed during this show. My husband knows that we have to eat dinner early on Sunday so that I can clean my organized kitchen and enjoy my favorite show. SO glad it is back.

I can guess but I'm sure everyone know and I'm going to shoot my sister for talking to me on the phone so long.

The show is now set up on my DVR so I will never miss a show!!!!

I am glad that some of the people they picked have no formal back ground it gives us creative people a chance to shine or fall. As a student I would love the chance to design. How else do you get the chance to experiance a chance of a lifetime.I applaud HGTV for giving these people a chance and we get to watch and learn . I wish the show was on a little earlier though, it makes it hard to get up at 3:45 am. I'm hooked thought and have to watch. Good luck to them all.

Posted by Joy – July 29, 2007 7:44 PM

I think the cast this year has some potential winners, but until we see their designs, all we are talking about is their personalities. I think some of the cast are irritating already, John Johnson and Scott are at the top of this list. Then, we have those with quirkiness, this will be Lisa, who looks like a gal from the sixties, but gone bad... Then we have those that look like they will take this competition seriously, but have fun, this will include Todd, Neerajan, and Josh F. So, let the games begin!

Posted by Mark – July 29, 2007 1:59 PM

David is hot, boomers are not? OK we get that. But, just to go out on a limb for a minute, I'd bet that a large number of HGTV's viewers are 45 and older. We love young and hip as much as the next guy but it would be wonderful to see some mature, seasoned designers with fresh ideas on the show (older does not mean old hat, or old shoe for that matter.)P.S., David is hot by the way. And oh, a tiny HGTV suggestion overall, my head thumps all day, and I figured out why. Every single show has a thump thump thump musical bass undertone, can we come up with another background sound maybe? Thanks, love HGTV overall though, it has saved me sooooo much money and my house looks great.

Josh F and Adrianna should have their own show-
then I'd watch regularly.
Adrianna is THE ONE, and Josh F is a close 2nd, but I have a crush on him, so I'm biased.

Posted by g – July 28, 2007 1:32 AM

I watched the program where the 11 stars were chosen on July 26, 2007. I was shocked that you were chosing people with NO design training but that appeared to be there as comics or as a lark. I dont know about most people but I watch design shows to get ideas about the right way to decorate, not how to do some goofy thing that no real decorator would ever do. Some of these people appear to be everything but trained decorators. I wont watch that kind of junk, there is enough trash on TV now.

Posted by Gail – July 28, 2007 1:12 AM

I agree with Emily's comment (from 7/24) regarding David's show; he's o.k. but not as great as it seemed on the contest. His show seems to be limited to a certain style and certain colors.

Also on 7/23, Karla asked HGTV is the designers are NCIDQ Certified Designers, very good question! I also got the impression that they are not; I think the show would be a lot more interested if HGTV looked more at the credentials and not so much at how they look........I thought the slide show of each designer would have some of their work.......but it's mostly photo shoots of the person as for a magazine cover. I REALLY LIKE THE IDEA OF THE SHOW BUT WOULD PREFER TO SEE WORK FROM DESIGNER WHO HAVE TRAINED PROFESSIONALLY AND don't care so much on how they look as long as they can speak.........I'm getting tired of the cookie cutter reality t.v. stars.......not at all like real life.....HGTV, you've got to brake the mold of these reality shows, or the show won't make it.

Posted by sony – July 26, 2007 4:27 PM

I watched the show with the 11 contestants for the first time. I have been watching David Bromstad's show, so I have to say of the 11 contestants no one compares to David Bromstad! I'm not one to comment much less write about anyone in television, however I have to say David is the greatest & designs are fabulous, just wish he could do my house! So whoever wins this time will certainly have a big challenge compared to David's show!

Hey everybody! I know it's probably too early to pick favorites but Josh Johnson and Christina Ray looked like the kind of people I would want to see be the next design star. Also I think David's show is kind of...well, not that great. He isn't the big artistic/creative person he seemed on the designstar episodes. (Sorry David, keep trying.) Anyway I want send a congratulations and a whoo hoo to everybody who made the show and for everyone else who didn't I want to say better luck next time. Peace everybody.

I heard somewhere that David’s show Color Splash would be back for another season. I find his show unique because he really questions the home owners on what they really like and would enjoy to have presented in their homes. David is a class act with his warmth, talent, and attention to “the big picture.”

The big picture is a dynamite design that fits the client’s needs and preferences. David is really setting the bar high in this area, by working one on one with his client. I look for the next Design Star to embrace the same abilities. I think most viewers are tired of showboating and know-it-all designers. We want to see talent and teamwork combined.

Big improvements from lasy year's cast. Looking forward to another year. Scott is quite a character. Adds some much-needed spice from last year. Congrats, you have entered the top of my reality TV line-up two years straight now.

I was shocked to read (in the designers' portfolios) how many contestants referred to themselves as interior designers. No one mentioned having passed NCIDQ. In the states represented a designer must pass NCIDQ (National Council of Interior Design Qualification) and complete annual CEU credits to maintain the title of interior designer. I would like HGTV's response to this.

Karla
NCIDQ certified designer

No favs yet. I'm still wondering if David will be back for another season. If HGTV cancels his show, then I just might have to re-think HGTV!!
That young man has more talent and he's nice to boot! Love his laugh.
But enough.
Here's to an interesting second season.

The show was great! I must say, it was even better than last season. The cast was amazing….especially Scott Corrdian, he was fabulous. I loved the fact that he said with him you get the passion and love with his design. I think that is a rare quality in designers these days and it’s nice to see that it still exists.

I’m can’t wait for their first challenge…all the challenges at that. It’s going to be an exciting season!

I must preface my comments by saying I love watching the food network and many of the "chefs". I would be remiss if I did not comment on Giada's wardrobe! Is she sharing her cooking skills or is she sharing the outcome of her implant operation? It was very obvious when the group was at Fort Dix she did know that the neckline down to her waist are not suitable. I read in the TV Guuide several weeks back that the viewers were trying to figure out if she was trying to share recipes or impress the camera man. I remember last season when Guy won (I personally think he looks like an unmade bed - so sloppy!!) The judges made the remark more times than one to the female conestants, watch your jewerly while on camera - why is there a double standard for the women? I must give you credit for taking Guy away from the preparation of food - he does not make a favorable impression that would lead to sitting across from him to enjoy a meal. UGH!!

If someone could clean Guy up and raise Giada's neckline on air things would more than adequate to raise the ratings - so many of my friens have stopped watching and it makes me sad. Everyone pretty much mades the same comments regarding these two individuals.

I am sure I am not the first one to comment on Giada's necklines. She's old enough to know better.

Thanks for reading this - I will continue to watch the FoodNetWork!!

I loved the show last year also, David was my pick to win. I like his style and personality. I think it takes both to win. I realize you have to have confidence in yourself, but you have to "play well with others" too. In viewing some of the videos I can see there are some diva's in the running this year and I hope they go quick. I think they get caught up in how good they think they are and the truth comes out... all hype and no style. We'll see... this is just the beginning!!

I can't wait to watch the show tonight. It's fun playing along with other people on this Fantasy Design game--I've never done anything like this before. I have a decision-making hangup, so it's therapeutic to watch design shows where the designers are required to make snap design decisions. Now, if I had someone else's money to make design mistakes with...my decision-making issue might go in another direction.

I love Design Star. It was exciting watching the entries from last year being spontaneously creative and trying to figure out what I would've done in their situation. I would've chosen David and I believe his last project was the icing on the cake for him. He is a sensational designer. I love watching his shows. I can't wait to play along this year. I think I have the winner picked. What a creative person to begin with.

last years show was just great. David was my favorite from the beginning ,so, I am so glad he won. I now watch him every week on monday nights in my area. I would hate to miss it. He has had some fantastic rooms. My only wish is that his side kick is so cute and wonderful I wish she had a little more exposure on the show. I know he is the star, but, they have the chemestary to make this show super .

I'm sorry to rain on the parade. But an interior designer is qualified by education, experience and exam (certification exams)....I just read through the profiles and biographies, I only read 1 that could actually legally be called a designer according to the NCIDQ.....this show should be called decorating star not design star....and the contestants should be called interior decorators not interior designers. It is actually illegal to use the term interior designer when people aren't licensed. Plus it makes certified designers look bad and ruins our credibility when millions of people see individuals who are "practicing interior design" and aren't actually qualified to, and make poor design decisions that don't show consideration to health, safety or welfare of the users (no, interior design isn't just picking paint colors and pillows). It would also be great for them show us the contestants drawing construction documents, electrical plans, elevations, or anything like that. I wish they would address these issues so the public knew about them and what interior design actually is.

I thought last year's show was terrific. Looking forward to this one. Haven't been through all the bios yet, but it should be interesting. (Did you watch TOP Designer on BRAVO? I thought that was very good also.)
I have to say, I don't like it when they team them up. I don't think that is a good statement of who they are. Or how they would run their own show. If its your own show you don't have your own staff working against you. Everybody wants the next paycheck.
And having said that, I did like the first show last year when they designed their living spaces. Beyond that, I think they should always work alone.

I, too, am looking forward to this season’s show. HGTV’s Design Star is alluring on many levels. By evoking the viewer’s imagination into the exciting possibilities of each design’s outcome, the viewer learns to appreciate all facets of great design techniques. Watching eleven designers reach for their collective dream is not only entertaining but inspiring.

I also appreciate the judges because they are polite, honest, and constructive with their remarks which give the program its sense of fairness. The host of the show, Clive, was an excellent choice for his wit and charm, as well as the kindness and respect he extends to each contestant.

I am so pleased HGTV is doing the program for a second time. I can’t wait for the show to get started; I expect to be enlightened and entertained again this year.

I Love the last show and ready to watch the new season. So far after viewing all the new cast I'm afraid of Lisa's hair. Sorry but it is bad.

I love the show. I am a stay at home Mom with a 10 year old son. I have been happily married for 30 years (7/16). I would love to have the designer from Georgia come design my master bed/bath and family room. Her video designs of her home are absolutely wonderful.

LMAO lwatkins... This year's designers are definitely worthy of some dishing, and it looks like you're gonna be a good one to get that started. Can't wait to see what shoes they choose once they actually start WORKING in the design challenges! Looking forward to dishing with you after Sunday night.

Looking forward to the new season. I think they missed the boat last year. I think Alice and David would have worked well together on a show. They were just so good together on the last couple of episodes. David has great design talent and Alice has a wonderful personality. I think they should still have her come on as a guest host on his new show.
I can't wait to see what happens this year.

I will be a new watcher this season. I have been intrigued by the trailers for the show. It also appears, by this blog, that the fans are "spirited", so I can't wait for the party to get started. To lwatkins...I totally get the shoe critique. It's all about the "kicks". I will be sure to look to the bottom of the screen as well. You made me laugh!!!

Shoes? How could you get past some of the, uh, I don't know.....hair? I am really looking forward to this season, but I feel kinda old when not one but two of the contestants are named Josh. I don't personally know any Josh's. In my day they named kids David and Paul and Barry.

I thoroughly enjoyed the last Design Star. David is fantastic and his choice of Danielle shows he has confidence in himself.

I muted all the commercials before the future stars gave their comments. Really, I won't listen to commercials when I am on my computer.

I just loved Design Star last year & I look forward to another year of fun. David Bromstad is the best first year winner & Alice a great runner up. Good luck to all of the contestants. May the best one win.
