Design Star

Anticipation...Anticipation...Is Making Me Wait

Posted by Design Star Blogger – August 2, 2007 10:16 PM

Hi Superfans! Well...I just watched episode 1 again. After reading all of your comments, I thought, "Okay. I HAVE to watch the first show one more time and see if I notice anything different. Maybe I'll come away feeling like some of the other Superfans have." So, I did it. I just finished it. Here are my thoughts...

The CLEAR standouts at this moment are Sparkle Josh, Scott and Will. I've always liked these guys from the start. But after watching the show for a second time, these three just seem to radiate off of the screen! (and that might be a good quality, for say...a host of a show!) Have you all noticed this? And, after my second viewing, I saw hints at a camaraderie between Robb and Todd. Maybe the producers of the show are just having fun with us, but, I'm thinking those two boys together would be a good way to get a headache! I also saw a vulnerability in Neeraja that I hadn't seen before. I wonder if she is just going to "wow" us in the next competition! And, I don't remember who said it, but whoever you are, you are right...Christina is a classic example of a Southern Lady. So, it will be interesting to see if she decides she can or cannot live with being outwardly competitive! Anyway...all that to say, if you all have a chance to watch it again, do it! To me, the show was even more fascinating the second time around!

Also, I am still sad for Lisa. But, as my seven year old just wisely pointed out to me, "Mom, it's a competition. Someone has to lose...every week." So, I am trying to be strong and be happy in the knowledge that Sunday night is almost here! Who do you think will be the next designer to have their show cancelled?

Our family has enjoyed all the episodes BUT think that WILL SMITH is the best designer by far. He should not have eliminated from the competition last week. WILL SMITH is the best designer!!!

Personally I disliked Robb from the start. I think I would have had to get rid of him and his car door right away. Neerja would have been doomed the second week. I took her as just plain lazy. No bar stools. Good grief!!!!!!!! Lisa's phone book beat Robb's car door all to pieces. No pun intended. 136604

I actually moaned and growned over the lack of creativity that Lisa came up with, but would have elimiated Narraja first, Lisa does have vision and wasn't carried away by her own talent as was Narraja. I think the "hunks" are great carpenters, but haven't seen ANY Design Elements at all. Sparkle Josh in incrediable and is a personality to compete with. I LOVE this show!!

I've watched both episodes and I think Narraja should have been the first to go. Vern was right. What does it take to buy barware and bar stools. After the second show it's hard to believe she offered her own designs to become a contestant. If you are measuring tape challeged ask the tile person for help.

LISA LISA!! I somehow hope that Lisa can find this comment. It has been sitting hard on my heart that you were eliminated first. Your point of view was strong and so commendable. Your use and choice of color was awesome. Yes, you could have made the space more useful, but you took a chance and really went for it. There are so many reasons to eliminate someone, and having a strong point of view shouldn't be at the top of the list. They obviously have never been to the MOMA. It was rock and roll!! You can give me design advise any time you want. And by the way, I DO know what I'm talking about. I am the Creative Director of a business specializing in dedicated home theatres and an Interior Design student by night at F.I.T. in New York. Good luck to you and hold your head high!

When I watched the auditions, I muttered under my breath of Sparkling Josh, "Uh-oh." Now my reaction is, "OH HO!!!" He's great...as a designer, and personality.

I cannot wait to see the designers work on individual projects. After watching the episode where they picked the 11 designers, I really thought Adriana would have been more of a "force" than she has been. The same is true of Kim... is has been a follower and not a leader. She hardly voices an opinion. I believe they both have talent, but who would know?! Come on girls... strut your stuff!!! Not a big fan of Christine... too predictable and trendy. I have been totally surprised by Sparkle Josh... I thought his previous work looked like it belonged in a brothel, but he has blown me away in the first two challenges. And Will & Scott haven design skills! Everyone else is either a carpenter or an ego-maniac!

you'd think that out of all the people that tried out the judges could have avoided even giving Rob, Todd, and Neeraja. I also think Lisa got a bad deal. I'll be watching next sunday. Later!

I watched design star last season. Really enjoyed it. But you know its like when they make a sequel to a movie, its not usually as good the second time. I've always liked Vern I even met him in person at QVC. He seemed really down to earth. But I think he was comming off a little harsh at one point. I dont think Narraja should have even made it on to the show. Shes soooooooooo bossy and snotty she should have been the first to go,shes gone now so good riddens. Todd is all into himself and your right the shirt off thing just makes me dislike him more. He needs to go and so does Rob.

I cant believe ROBNOXIOUS is still in this competition if he does not get kicked off this week I will quit watching!

Posted by mike – August 6, 2007 3:41 PM

I watched the second show with great trepeditation because of the bad judging in the
first show. Surprise!! The judges were right in
getting rid of Narraja because she is not very
personable but should have gotten rid of Robb because he is just blind to his lack of ability!!
Still, they should have made an exception and gotten rid of one more "TODD". His attitude is
very eogistical!! Do a recall and give Lisa another chance!!

Posted by Mary – August 6, 2007 12:53 PM

Last week Lisa got a raw deal. Just finished watching episode number 2. I think the judge's got it right this time, had it been me; I would have sent Robb packing. And maybe hyperactive Todd. Notice how they both have first names that end in dd and bb! That has nothing to do with anything I just thought hummm birds of a feather.... Clive did say, "Josh and Narraja were the team managers," a fact that they choose to ignore. Sparkle Josh is amazing. I loved his work last week and this week. He has a sweet disposition too.
I wonder if the two female judges have interior design degrees? Or if they have ever picked up a paint brush?

I'm in sparkles fan club. He knocks your socks off with his way out ways than you just can't get enough of his wonderful sense of the world which this Grandma throughly enjoys.

Comments on Vern stuck on himself?? I've watched Vern for many years and he's such a earthy no nonsense person in both his designs and personality. He has a good eye and they couldn't have picked a better judge.

I look forward to Sunday nights to see Design Star. This year's contestants are a good mix. Scott needs to stop crying and start designing. It's too soon to do any predictions, I'm waiting for them to design something alone. One thing I do know, Rob says he can do anything, but so far he has only managed to annoy everyone. His attempt at Tuscan style was a bomb. sparkle Josh did a beautiful job on the dinning room. Can't wait for next week's show. Love Vern and Clive.

vern is so stuck on himself, he should have eaten that phone book design by lisa.......

he acts so above everyone else.......

keep david, at least he is "real"

Looks like this season is off to a great start! I can see lots of potential in a few of the contestants, but it's too soon for me to venture a guess. Can't wait to see what week 2 is going to bring. As for poor little Lisa going home, I think her design was fun, and interesting, but I have to agree with the Judges, what purpose did it serve? I don't think too many people come in the door and want to "sit for a glass of wine" as she tried to explain, looks like she just had a "mental-moment" and got lost in making an impression. On a seperate note, anyone know if there is anywhere that you can get a preview of the upcoming week? I'll take another look, maybe I'm just clicking too fast! LOL

I can't believe Lisa was the first to go. She made an attempt at a design, while others simply painted and decorated or blamed the person they worked with on his/her design instead of doing any real design work. I didn't love Lisa's design, but I think Lisa has heart, confidence in her creativity and courage to try something different and fresh. I'm quite annoyed with Vern -- Lisa wasn't designing a living room or bedroom but an entrance to a room. Her space was not "a failure."

Looking forward to the next episode. Last season, I was voting for David and Alice from the first episode -- it tore me up to choose between them in the end! But I don't have a favorite designer for this season . . . yet.

Posted by Barbara – August 5, 2007 12:29 PM

I think sparkle Josh seems to have a good sense of design and presents well on the camera. To have their own design show, they need to present well and feel comfortable. Definitely Neeraja or Organic Josh needs to go next.

Posted by Victoria – August 5, 2007 10:33 AM

I look so forward to each and every Sunday. I think David is doing a good job on Color Splash, but I think Sparkle Josh will outdo him this season. I think he has so much more to offer and I can hardly wait to see it! Pat

Posted by Pat – August 5, 2007 12:14 AM

I think "Organic Josh" is in way over his head. He may be into "Green" design, but I doubt if he really knows much about Sustainable design or products. He looks like a lost-in-the-sixties hippie. I believe his days are numbered.

I hope the first show jitters are over this week and the contestants can get on with some serious design work. I think the wide open penthouse was a more difficult project than last year's townhouse because of the openness. Maybe they should have taken more time to discuss a cohesive plan that would incorporate where they are. Narraja was very lucky to have squeaked through on this show. Like Vern (my very favorite designer since trading spaces days) said, this is Las Vegas and she couldn't find any bar stools or one of those high top tables with barstools that might have had a deck of cards on it. I like sparkly Josh and Will's combined effort and the fact that each appreciated the other's talent. Christina has to be more assertive and her partner has to learn what "class" is. Disappointed with Robb and other Josh. What was that supposed to be????
Kim and Scott had fun and did a good job, as for Todd, seems very talented, but a skate board ramp in the middle of a living area, I don't think so. Plus, please tell him to leave his shirt on. Is he designing or auditioning for a model's job. I hope I've covered everyone, but as of now I think the first design search had more talent, except for Ramona. I hope Lisa finds an avenue for her talent, but it surely isn't in interior design. I couldn't even tell what the phone book scupture was supposed to be.
I am 66 and consider myself pretty "hip" but my traditional self keeps coming up. What's wrong with purchasing furniture from a store?? It seems that other than Kim's project, there was no formal area to sit around and just talk, that is if this was a real penthouse apartment. I have probably said too much, but I couldn't wait for this season to start as it is such a great concept and I enjoyed season one so much. I knew it was David all the way. I watch all the design show HGTV, DIY, Food Network, A&E, etc as I am retired with not a lot to do. I admit though, I am afraid of color. Good luck on the following episodes, I'll be watching!!

We've already been given the name of the next style star show...Ebony and Ivory aka Will and Josh. I'm ready to watch a show featuring them right now! Their personalities, their style, those southern accents...I'm sold! Neeraja should have been the first to go. She couldn't find the "right" bar stools...nothing on that huge wall on the staircase...couldn't finish the paint job. Plus she controlled the money and picked the space because she is soooo much in control and superior to the others. Puh-leeze!
Maybe I'm just old but to me the quarter pipe was not brilliant design...it was selfish and narcisistic. AND the shirt off thing was endearing with David...it is just plain irritating with this guy. The other "handyman" is obviously perpetrating...I hope the show has good insurance. Please, please, please don't reward folks for being mean. It's one reason I don't watch other reality shows. I love HGTV...don't ruin it for me with King/Queen of Mean winners.

I am new to DesignStar. I am so happy to have something fun to watch again. I agreed with the judges on episode one. Narraja is definately going to have to prove herself on the next task. I'm a born and bred Californian but Todd is even getting on MY nerves, I would think non-Californians must find him especially obnoxious...but I liked his design okay.

I just saw one of the first episodes of last years "Design Star" winner's show, "Color Slash w/ David Bromstad". They love to show him driving from place to place, but take a look, it's not even the vehicle he won!! It's a VW! He won a Mercury Mariner........

Posted by rshaw207 – August 4, 2007 6:20 PM

Okay I had to pop in to say that the table saw incident was SO seriously dangerous that the guy should have been kicked off IMHO. And no, I'm not giving him any slack because "it is an unfamiliar saw that perhaps functions a little differently than the one he uses at home". Please, a professional wood worker dude would NEVER have let that happen.

I was really excited to start watching the new Design Star in Las Vegas, with more talent, etc., etc. Well, after watching the first couple of episodes, I'm done watching! Last year it was fresh and new. This year, I'm watching 3 snotty, rude designers TRASH the efforts of the contestant's circles, squares, and "hip" junky decorating. I've got better things to do with my time!!!!!!!!!! To me, all the design looks bad, (do we ALL have quarter pipes in our living rooms?) and the judges are sad, judgemental, snobs. I still, however, like Clive.

As I am in the Design field and also in Design school, I have a great interest in this show.
Please......Narraja HAS to be the next one eleminated. Design above all should be fun. Watching Narraja makes me want to quit school.

Posted by Carrie – August 3, 2007 8:16 PM

IS there a date for the final show? Last season they invited viewers to come to New York. Will they do the same this season.

Posted by alcook – August 3, 2007 6:02 PM

I was surprised that Narraja made it pass the first episode. She doesnt impress me as a designer. she put a few pieces out and painted a wall half-way up....Good gracious, I could have done that!!!!!

Posted by Rosemary – August 3, 2007 4:34 PM

You know what, I know the accident with the table saw was really bad..he seriously could have taken someone's head off...but that is why onlookers should not be around power tools they aren't using. You have to keep in mind that accidents can and do happen. It doesn't make him incompetent or dangerous to the point that he should be removed from the show. I have a scar on my leg that I got when I was redoing our kitchen...did you know the laminate sheeting for countertops is like a razor blade after it's been cut? Neither did I. I set it on top of some paint cans while waiting for the glue to get tacky, walked by it too closely, and it cut so deep I almost needed stitches. My boyfriend walked in the room when I was cleaning it out and he turned ghostly white when he saw all the blood! But it was an accident! It doesn't mean I shouldn't be allowed to work in design anymore. His accident doesn't mean he should get kicked off the show. It is an unfamiliar saw that perhaps functions a little differently than the one he uses at home, so he just needs to be a little more careful and not assume it will work the same.

Quote: "Who do you think will be the next designer to have their show cancelled?"

It's hard to predict, as Kim, Will and Christina are still to be seen by themselves. I believe there'll be 2 eliminations this time, and another team project to complete( probably a kitchen, from what I hear). Based on this being another team project, I put my elimination bets on Josh and Christina; the less handy one and the less assertive among the ones who scored poorly the last episode. I think that Robb and Narraja will stand a chance because of their talent, skills, and personality (Yes,a bad one, but it brings drama and dynamics)Plus, QueenMean has some talent/potential, and I believe she'll continue to annoy more viewers. Same, I think that Robb will do much better if he learns to go with the group, and not against it. We'll see.

Posted by Dee – August 3, 2007 1:37 PM

@ MaryLynn – I have to agree with you about Josh and his table saw incident. If I were a judge, I would have voted him off just to make sure he doesn't kill any of the other contestants.

As for the front runners, I'm still pulling for Will. He is very smooth.

Posted by Steve-orino – August 3, 2007 10:15 AM

I'm very much looking forward to Sunday and the next challenge.

I hope that the attitudes battle it out early and we get to see some real design. I get frustrated with the lip action and sometimes turn it off. Let's hope I can tolerate Neeraja's superior persona and Robb's "I'm too sexy for this show" dip-finger point pose (oh for gosh sake stop that, it looks idiotic! And take that stupid cabbie hat off. It does nothing for you.) Gee, can you tell I'm not impressed? I know this show not live by any stretch of reality, but take some advice for the future, this is not a persona that sells you or ingratiates you to anyone. If it is only nervous energy, I hope you get over it. If it's your true self, I hope you get over it.

I'm want to see what Scott, Will and Josh have for us next and I would like to see if Kim really has it on her own without Scott. I think maybe she was the execution and he was the style.

Posted by Beth – August 3, 2007 7:40 AM

I watched last season's design star and knew David was the best designer in the very beginning. The problem was that when it came time to vote between him and Alice my internet system was not up and running. I was soooo happy to find out he won! I have a feeling about this year's star. I have to give it a little bit more time though. I just love design. By the way; my daughter is a Graphic Design major at Millersville Univ. Keep bringing it on HGTV.

Posted by Cheryl Smalley – August 2, 2007 10:44 PM

I was in such shock at the way that guy handled the table saw. He is a disaster waiting to happen. I have seen accidents with a saw and they are NOT pretty. I hope the other contestants stay out of his way. I'll have to get over this before I can actually talk about the contestants.
