Hi Superfans! Where to begin? Where to begin? Do I begin with how Todd and Robb forced...I mean "voted" Organic Josh's team into a tyranny...I mean "democracy?" Do I begin with Neeraja's insatiable desire to be IN CONTROL...even if this means that she loses the competition? Or...Do I begin with the fact that cutie pie Scott BAWLED through the ENTIRE episode? Or maybe I should begin with Will...who, throughout the entire competition, HAD to be muttering under his breath, "GET ME OFF OF THIS SHIP OF FOOLS!" So much to cover! But, my little fingers can only move so fast. So, let's just dive in. Shall we?
TEAM NEERAJA started out with QUITE a design challenge. And, on that note, I need to add that Team Neeraja was actually the team that WON this competition. (this is important to no one except Robb and Todd. Did you notice how many times they proclaimed themselves the winners?) Anyway..Team Neeraja left the homeowners with a MUCH smarter, more tasteful kitchen. And, absolutely left the homeowners with a much more beautiful dining room! (What I don't understand is why neither team used granite tile? The black tile was retched. And, I know for a fact that you can get granite tile at next to nothing, if you find a closeout. Anyway...just a thought.) Let's break it down...
Neeraja, Neeraja, what are we going to do with you? (nothing, now! I guess!) It was actually painful for me to watch Neeraja tonight. She would rather try to act like a "tile expert" and put her team in jeopardy...and put HERSELF in jeopardy...than admit that she doesn't have all of the answers. Can you even imagine going to buy tile for a counter top without measuring? And, I didn't see any regret, (regarding putting her team in jeopardy), throughout the entire show. Can anyone say, "Issues?!" How about, "Great T.V.?"
Let's talk about Scott! The producers of the show didn't let us see very much of Scott's ideas. But, it was so obvious that he is such a true professional. He was always the one concerned about the finished product...the big picture...the time limitations. And, even with back trouble, (what a bummer!), he really not only tried to do his best...he did! But, bless his heart! He IS so emotional! He warned us though...remember when he said that 'with him you get all the passion and the drama and the emotion and the love...' Well...I think we really do! I'm not sure how this would all translate to a show. But, I would certainly let him to have his way with my house!
Josh Johnson...You don't have to be a STAR baby, to be in my SHOW!... (Just a little shout out to Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr.) I've said it before and I'll say it again, he is a STAR already! Not only could Josh Johnson get in there and rip paneling off of the wall...he can take us shopping and help us find the best deals in Las Vegas! All the while being his delightful, charming self! I will be shocked if he is not our next design star. Josh Johnson is fabulous!
Adriana seems like an OKAY carpenter. The bar that led out to the dining room was gorgeous. I'll giver her that. But...I don't know what I thought about that island in the kitchen. It kind of looked like plywood. My immediate reaction is that I hate it. I need to see it again. Maybe she could be sort of a smart-alec, really-full-of-herself, female Ty Pennington. But, I don't think she has what it takes to host her own show. Two words...egotistical and difficult.
Kim. What is Kim's story? Is she talented or is she hiding behind the right people? I cannot tell. And, I think the producers of the show are doing this on purpose. But, I will say that she does seem to have a really good head on her shoulders. She seems to be the voice of reason...a lot. We'll have to see what she can do when she designs a room by herself...next week!
UGH. Somebody please pass me an aspirin...It's time to talk about TEAM ORGANIC. Team Organic would be the LOSERS of this kitchen competition. Everything in this makeover looked as cheap and as tacky as it could possibly look. The faux granite countertops? The "crackled" cabinets? The dining set that looked like it belonged in some scary castle somewhere? (...but, not a castle in Tuscany.) The "painted" brick? How about all of the fake plants? The lion "statue" taking up room under the bar? The list is endless! But, the part of this kitchen that I hated the most? That HORRID FOUNTAIN!
Attention Designers...If you EVER take away my pantry to give me something like that...watch your back!
There is so much that is bad about this group that I am afraid I will never finish and be able to post this blog! First of all...Why, in the name of sense, didn't Will and Christina do the shopping? Clearly, Will is the ONLY member of this team who has ANY taste whatsoever! I know, you are thinking, "What about Christina? She has good taste doesn't she?" Need I remind you of the FOUNTAIN? I am all for fountains. But, here's a thought...wouldn't it have been lovely to put it OUTSIDE the kitchen window? It could have been, (and should have been), something beautiful they could look at while standing at the kitchen sink! And then...STILL HAVE A PANTRY!
What about this strange and (most assuredly) dysfunctional friendship between the two arrogant children? Yes. I do mean Todd and Robb. I can't remember the last time I referred to anyone as a "bully" but, the term applies to both of them! And, what about their terrible taste? It is time for both of them to go. Both are immature, off-putting, annoying brats. I can't imagine anyone watching one of their shows! Bye bye, Todd. Bye bye, Robb.
Speaking of bye bye...Organic Josh had to go. It was way past time. And, was it just me? Or did he look like he never took a shower the entire time he was there? Gross! Clean up, Mr. Green Jeans! You are on T.V.! I don't care how much of a tree hugger he is! If I were a tree, I would want people hugging me ONLY if they showered regularly! And, besides that, he was so far out of his league. He kept saying that he had a democracy going on. But, all that was going on was Todd and Robb taking over...just because they could. And, the plastic grape vines that he thought were "so Tuscany?" Enough said.
Christina. I think she probably has good ideas in there...somewhere... But, I think she is so overpowered by everyone and so intimidated by everyone that she is just fading into the wood work! I fear that Christina will be returning to Georgia soon if something doesn't change...immediately.
And, then there's my man, Will. This man has more talent in his little finger than the entire, rest of Team Organic combined. I was amazed (and a little repulsed) at the disrespect he got from the other male team members regarding his ideas! He was the only one with ANY good ideas in that group. Thankfully, Will, this competition is over! Just pretend like it was a really bad dream!
Scott, Will and Sparkle Josh are looking a lot like STARS tonight! I'm excited to see what next Sunday's challenge holds! Okay, Superfans...these are (just a very, very few of) my thoughts about Design Star! :o) I can't wait to hear yours!

I know this is late. But I found the judge's comments interesting. Pooh poohing faux tuscany when you have the exact same level of faux design on a variety of HGTV shows. Design Cents, 24 hour design, Design on a Dime to just name a few. Slap it up, slap some paint on it, who cares about good design or craftsmanship. It's DIY and crafty time for the masses.

Okay, The suspense is killing me! I can't wait to watch the show tonight! I'm totally hooked ( As I was last year too! I love David B!).
Najeera needed to go! although to her credit she appeared truely concerned about Scott's poor health. I can give her that!
Robb needed to go over my "O'Josh" in my opinion but this makes for good TV drama! Poor Josh, got steamrolled by "Starsky & Hutch"....Sad !
Will, I think Will is totally under-rated! He tried so hard to be professional and get his idea's across about the hidious fountain (MY GOD, I'd have killed someone for doing that to my kitchen!), then the poor guy had to work with the Testosterone based Robb & Todd (Yikes!). I bet Will shines this week.
Sparkle Josh, I LOVE Sparkler Josh! Obviously his talent, grace and poise is shining through. I'd hate to see him on a team with Robb & Todd (SCARY!!) WINNER ALL THE WAY!!!
Scott, I think he has great potential. The first week knocked me out! I'm not sure if the Zen room was his idea or Kim's. If it was Kim's then she may be holding an ACE in the Hole!
Speaking of Kim, I want to see her work alone, see if the girl's got game.
Robb, What can I say? I couldn't figure out what smartallic comment he said to Najeera during the judging phase? Does anyone know? I TIVO'd the show but couldn't make it out. It appeared that everyone was taken back by his rude and cocky comments and behaviour. And what's with the Diesel Truck shirts on every episode? ADIOS MUCHACHO!!
Todd, Surfer boy needs to go back to the beach and get eaten by a Shark! Yikes!
Adrianna, Very talented and Resourceful! But wait and see?!?
Christina, Sorry honey..... boring!

If I had wound up with either one of those kitchens in my house, I would have been very upset. Having said that, I think that by himself
Sparkle Josh could have done an amazing job. I'm really looking forward to seeing what else he can do and I'll be really surprised if he isn't the one who gets his own show next year.
Posted by Joyce – August 12, 2007 5:17 AM
Did others notice that Robb knocked down several
paint cans when he wasn't picked to be on a team,
but was placed by default? With that kind of
attitude, my wife would never allow him in our
home, for design or anything else.
Posted by Eddie – August 12, 2007 2:30 AM
I agree with Vanalinda. If all the contestants were judged at the end - Lisa would still be in the running.
Posted by Cheryl – August 12, 2007 12:48 AM
The call for eliminationing Neeraja and Josh Organic's show was right on. Seems Robb was in the running for one of the positions too.
I'm looking forward to seeing the next competition and seeing the designers shine as individuals.
While the individual spaces decorated from the 99 cent store seems out there, after the first competition I thought that would be the ultimate challenge for creativiy. As a designer who wanted to see what might happen, I went into the store and designed a space for myself. I came away with a good laugh. I came up with decorative inventions such as paper towel swag drapes, hanging lamp from round white nylon holloween candy collection bags, table runners sewn together for a throw, accent pillows made from clothing and decorated with belts, real plants in glass containers with decorative rock for starters.
Just wonder what the budget is going to be? The ones with true creativity for Design will be staying on and it will be a good.
Whoever chose the people for this competition and the last really knows that real personalities are much more interesting than any script. Way to go, you've done it again.

I wonder, It seems to me that the constraints of time, and having to do many projects that are not in a designers repertoire are sometimes eliminating people that may have strong design skills but lack in cabinet building or faux painting, etc. Where in the real design world one would hire the appropriate craftsmen to do what is needed.
Design a wallpaper pattern, A bathroom, a couch,a table setting, etc. but let the experts bring it to life. I applaud all of them for being in this tight spotlight.

This is the most juicyest design show. It made me mad when it took them forever to do the kitchen. You figure out your floor plan, you never do tile in a kitchen if you don't have time. You can do tin spray painted copper with some upholstery nail heads or with a faux finish; even bead board would have been faster. think about your clients!!! The one that was soooo messy.
Josh is really sparkling and hes a real team player. Adrianna has got skills more than any of the girls- hgtv may have the first hispanic design star. There is only one David, so the rest of them need to keep on their shirts. Will and Sparkle need to work together. They are the best out of the boys.
Those three will be in the finals

I love the show and could not wait for the season to begin, but I honestly am not seeing the same talent and selection criteria that was present last season. I like the fact that they included folks who were not performing as designers professionally because there are people who can do the job without the title & vice versa (when looking at Rob and skaterboy). I don't think homemaker chick's style is as universal or adaptable as are the others - she's too stuck on girly, pastel stuff. I think Kim is going to show her stuff at the end and I love Sparkle and Will. Rob & and the skateboard guy should be thankful they made it this far - they're worthless to me. I miss David!!!

These people are suppose to be designers, not decorators. I think the panel has gotten it right so far except for Robb. Robb may surprise us in Week Three. But, he doesn't have the personality to have his own show. Who I love so far are Will, Sparkle Josh, Adriana (because she can do space planning and she's organized). Christina may do a great job this week. But, she has to be more assertive. They will all work alone this week, so the star should be easy to pick. Vern is doing a great job; he's a true professional
Posted by Sharon – August 11, 2007 5:25 PM
it's sparkle josh and will at the end. You watch.
Posted by Karen – August 11, 2007 1:18 PM
I couldn't sleep after the last show. Who, in their right mind, leaves a formica backsplash in place and tries to tile around it? It was just plain awful. Even if they had enough tile and enough time, that tile job was going to be awful. Neeraja, what were you thinking?
Love Sparkle Josh!

I can't believe after reading most of the comments that no one has anything to say about the design of the studio "set"! Every time I watched an episode last season, I cringed when it came time to watch the judging. Why, oh why was it so bleak, dark, and depressing? And this is a design network? Where was Vern and his comments when he had to spend how many hours there each week? Where was his design creativity, philosophy and principles? Maybe one of the first challenges each season should be for the "stars" to design the set! It would be hard to imagine they could do any worse than what's going on now.
My other issue is how in the heck can you judge workmanship, craftmanship, color choices, etc. sitting in a studio watching it on a TV screen?
Please pick people/judges that are available to observe at least some part of the process. Have them on site to view the before, at least some part of the process and certainly the "after" or finished project. In the case of the kitchens, I'd want to see how they flowed with the rest of the house and would want to examine the craftmanship.
My last comment is about the 2 non-designers? Who are they and why are they judging this show?
Posted by carolinagirl – August 11, 2007 10:57 AM
I can't believe how emotional some of you viewers get:) And I am truly astounded about the attacks on Vern Yip. People - he IS an actual designer as well as an architect. His responsibility is to pull out the best in people as well as demand that the contestants do their best. And come on, when it comes to designing a room for an actual family, a $10k budget PLUS 5 designers should be able to plan, execute and implement a sound design within 3 days. As for the idiotic comment about Vern Yip scaring the poor contestant who needed a break - she could not clearly state her design skills and experience, she instead chose to "tell a story about her process" using pictures of other designers rooms and she could only focus on her cat yoga books. Vern's questions were simple and direct - are these rooms yours, have you ever designed and what can YOU do? And as for the person who asked when a kitchen remodel was ever timed - I guess you've never had a professional quote from a contractor with a time of completion expectation that costs megabucks for an overrun. Vern, and the other judges, have a responsibility to filter the best out of others, not hold hands. David Bromstad worked hard and listened to the advice of the panel each week and look where he is today. Reality check, people. This is not a search for your inner self moment with hugs and sharing. Its about learning, exhibiting and being the best. As a viewer and designer, I would hope the next design star is selected based on the same merits as Season One. I believe he/she will be.
Posted by Carolyn – August 11, 2007 10:26 AM
I watched it for the first time. What's up with the other two judges? THey are giving the guy dirty looks and rolling their eyes. I don't like the two girl judges.

TO: EDDIEALBANIA,
kitty barrrr---ffff what are you thinkin? if you stop at every yard sale, I'm sure you can collect every book and spend a whole quarter.
Hometime, are you for real? is your t.v. still stuck on the spanglish channel?!?!just in case you didn't remember hometime was on for a million years and did't you get enough of it? People are sick of watching bob villas! maybe your t.v. is of the same era, might want to update to a lrg wall unit or ask whats there face if you can be a guest and maybe fetch there nails and hammer for them, maybe they'll even let you wear their tool belt.
Posted by potteryfarm – August 11, 2007 1:05 AM
Something Vern said to the designers really struck a chord with me: "you guys get to leave the space; these families have to remain and actually LIVE and FUNCTION there." Therefore, in my mind Vern does not deserve any of the criticism he is receiving here. Isn't this the recognition of "design" versus "decorating" that you all have been asking for?
I was SCREAMING at the television - not tile! not tile! you don't have the time or money for tile! So long Neeraja, and I hold Kim accountable for this disaster as well.
Robb - did you SEE the looks from the other contestants when he walked in as having survived to the next round! But is he getting a bad rap? He seems smug, and he doesn't play well with others. But is there more than meets the eye? Maybe we'll get to see him shine in the individual competition.
Sparkle Josh - I would watch your show any day!
Will, Christina, Scott, and Adrianna - I'm beginning to wonder about you guys.
Todd - isn't your website named getoveryourself.com?
Addicted to the show and can't wait until Sunday! Actually, the Saturday rerun of last week! Maybe my website should be getalife.com? :)
Posted by ktsmom – August 10, 2007 10:44 PM
So far no one stands out for me. Fun to watch, but last year from Week 2 David was the one. Not seeing that in anyone yet this year but I'll keep watching and hopefully we'll have another star.

Ok, first I have to comment on wowdidyouseethatbird. I saw your posting and almost fell out of my chair laughing! Your screen name is the bomb! And YES, I saw that same bird!
Sparkle Josh is great! I can see him being the next Design Star. He has an awesome personality and decorating sense. I do like Robb though too. I think he got a bad rap in the beginning because of the OTHER Josh. His carpentry skills scared me. You can tell when someone knows their way around a drill. That boy DID NOT! I'm sooooooooooo glad Neeraja is gone. That woman needed an attitude adjustment. You cannot go into something like this and just try to burn everyone around you. The way she snatched that paint can with the money in it from Kim that first day was rude. Right now they are not only trying to win for themselves, but working as a team to achieve their goals. I can't wait for Sunday! I think I'll join wowdidyouseethatbird and have a glass of champaigne and cheer Josh on!!!!

Thank goodness Neeraja's gone. She was giving me a headache! What a b*tch! I have my own interior color consulting business and I could never be like her! On the other extreme, Sparkle Josh seems quite popular here. He is funny, personable, creative, talented but he scared me a little at the audition - I could just see silver and crystal everywhere! But he's since shown he's more versatile and creative than that. I loved seeing him actually tearing paneling off the wall. Todd - how many more skateboard ramps are you going to incorporate in your 'designs'? Act a little more mature - PLEASE! Organic Josh - nice boy but I couldn't see him carrying his own show anyway. Adriana - please show more humility AND quality in your work. Kim -I'm looking forward to showing what you can really do with your own 'room' this Sunday night. Christina - ditto. But please, not another fountain. Kitchens, by the way, do not really need decorative fountains in them. It's kind of redundant with the main sink, (and a veggie sink too). Will - I'm hoping your 'room' isn't too much of a bachelor's pad but I'm looking forward to seeing more of your creativity!
And Robb - being that you are as annoying as Neeraja, I'm hoping your 'show' is cancelled because - creative or not - you are definitely NOT TV host material. You should take some people-person lessons from David Bromstad. Now that's somebody who rocks!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Sparkle Josh! He is IT!

the overall presentation of the challenge i find is more of the same old same old....i would have loved it had HG offered a new concept of design..
present challenges about the environment...about
geography...maybe about particular materials[out of the the box]..i would love to see more re-defining of the idea of 'design', 'interior spaces'invent not just decorate[the part pipe dining area was a start]...really challenge them...don't play it so safe and comfortable

I was hesistant about Sparkle in the beginning but I have to say, he is definitely a star! Of all the contestants, he's the one I can best picture hosting a show. He has style, flair, pizazz, personality galore, you name it. Go Sparkle!

Hey Todd, aren't you a little too old to pretend to be a hip teen? I guess we will have to get used to you, since they will keep you on as long as you keep your shirt off.

Loved the last eopisode but was alittle confused why no one measures or draws out a plan before they go shopping so they don't waiste time going back and forth to the store.Jiosh Sparkles dining room was great, they should listen to him more. We have a few good design stars that need to step up and let there selfs heard before they get nocked off. Can't wait untill this sundays show.

How many more hours until Sunday night???!!! I can't wait! The Josh Sparkle fan club,(my friends and myself) are meeting at my place for a bottle of Chardonnay and to cheer on Josh. GO JOSH!!! YOU SHOW THEM, BOY!!! Whatever will I do until Sunday night??? I KNOW!!! Shopping! See you all Sunday! *kisses*

We decided to check out this blog tonight to check on our Nashville boy, Sparkle Josh. It thrilled us to see so much support behind him. Just know that he is just as personable, funny, and fabulous in person! The Lipstick Lounge loves you, Josh!!

I am very curious about the budget. Both teams had an amount of money to spend - - how much did they use? I feel like this should be an issue brought out on the show. How close did the teams come to the budget amount? Did they go over? What happens if they do? Does the team (or person) who comes closest without going over (sounds like "The Price Is Right"!!) get "bonus points"? In a real-life situation, the budget would be an extremely important issue. I would like to see it brought out more in the show.

Can't wait to see this weeks challenge...I love when the designers have to rely only on themselves and can really shine!! It certainly shows who has the ability and who doesn't. Remember David's first solo room last season? Incredible...it was sooooooo obvious he had amazing talent. I am waiting to see what Josh Sparkle does with this challenge. I think he has beautiful taste, judging by his dining room this past week. Also can't wait to see what Will does. I hate to say it, but I almost hope Robb takes a dive...he has SUCH an attitude with everyone...it is painful to watch.
I love this show!!! Sunday's are my favorite day of the week!!! : )

I LOVE JOSH SPARKLE!!! What a personality...lol...he really does seem to have it together though. Crying Scott,,,someone said "another over sensitive gay man", SO? OK, so he crys a lot...I'm a photographer, I pitch hissies, cry, pace around and then get serious and get to work. I do my best work right after a good cry. Let's give Scott a chance, I think we'll see some good things from him.
A fountain in a closet!!!??? OMG, what were they thinking? To desecrate valuable storage room for a tacky fountain...someone was insane. And yes, we don't EVEN need to talk about the crackle finish cabinets...*finger down throat...gagging*
I would not have been happy with either of those kitchens...all I would be able to say is "HGTV better get someone over here right now, OMG."

I'm new to this blog but am enjoying all of your comments. I agree with most of your observations about the characters in this episode and I think the right choices of 'cancelling their shows' was made. Nature Josh should have been the first to go but we all knew that Lisa's show was cancelled before it even began, right? For those who are question marks, like the bullies, Christina and Adriana, this next week should be the test when they EACH have to design something. Can't wait for Sunday evening. I LOVE this show!

Watching a design show is like spending the day with my best friends. Good ideas, high energy, a few laughs, and mutual respect. There might be a few of those traits emerging from this years design stars, but so far I'm a little disappointed.
Sparkle Josh has all the traits! Great design and a delightful personality. Adrianna, Christina and Kim have shown bits and pieces of design talent. I'm anxious to see them develop more substenance. So far they're all one deminsional to me. Scott and Will - not so bad -I'm interested enough to watch them again. Todd and Robb - get over yourselves! I have enough annoying people in my life - I don't need any more.
Posted by Pat – August 9, 2007 4:39 PM
OK....so, Cap'n Crunch and Natasha are gone. Quelle suprise!
I really find it hard to beleive that there weren't a thousand other applicants to the show this year that had much more design potential than these two. (and a few others left on the show). If they didn't, then I am signing up for next year!
When I want drama...I'll watch "Law and Order". What I want as a long time HGTV addict is to see an outstanding design competition. Not minimal talent. Not surfer dudes. Not bullying. Not crying and whining. PLEASE, show me something I've never seen before. Not faux brick. Show me style with substance. Show me original ideas. Show me something I haven't seen on a hundred other design shows. Find the new Candice Olsens, Vern Yips, etc. They must be out there. Then have a competition with those folks. You can learn how to be in front of a camera. David Bromstad did. They aren't pretty enough....give them a makeover. I really don't care what they look like if they can show me something fabulous.
I have an idea for next years competition, if they have one. Don't eliminate anyone week to week. Pick 10 amazing design people and give them a new challenge every week. Then grade them accordingly. Grade them on style, oringinality, team skills, instructional abilities, whatever. Then whoever has the most points at the end of the season is the new design star. We could all vote. You have your judges grades and the viewer grades.
Then we should see a competition. Then we should see people step up to the plate and give it their all.

Ah, B-bye Neeraja! It was in the cards when she couldnt find a barstool that she liked from last week...WHAT WAS SHE THINKING??? Then we had to go get tile for the kitchen counter, and didn't buy enough??? Did anyone take measurements and do some calculations on the way to the 'tile mart'??? (Kim was sucked right in, but I can't blame her - just know that she has to step up next week.) Guys...don't bite off more than you can chew - you know how many hours you have to complete your project, do a little time management, and if you need to do something 'simple'(yet tasteful) for the sake of time constraints - wouldn't that be a better choice than NOT finishing a project?
Robb...Robb...Robb - I just haven't found a way to get on your bandwagon yet. Not impressed with your skills, definitely not in love with your attitude - change it or be ready to go home.
Adrianna....thank you for taking some of the lead on the kitchen project. NOT in love with that island-thingy in the kitchen - you would have done better to make some additional under-counter storage and called it a day! You're awesome though...looking forward to seeing you do more!
Christina, honey, your sweetness is going to be the death of your "show" if you don't step up some. Stop standing in the shadows and letting the 'stupid boys' make all the decisions.
Hey...Half-pike - Yeah, you know who I am talking to... You have some really great design ideas and can build your little surfer butt off - props to you, dude! But you need to be able to appeal to a broader audience, and like, I just don't see it yet! 'nuf said.
Kimmy, Kimmy, Kimmy... A good haircut lasts 6-8 weeks, hopefully you will last a lot longer on the show. You are the level-headed one -- don't let other people sucker you, ok?
(Sparkle) Josh... I just love you. You have the appeal. You're NOT obnoxious. And most of all, You are a value shopper! It can LOOK great and be INEXPENSIVE, and it's easier for the 'average' JoAnn to like you because of that mindfulness! I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST!
Big Will... If you can't say anything nice to someone...then please, by all means, come and sit next to me! From Episode 1, I liked your style. You have the potential to still be standing at the end!
Scott... I just love you too. I want you to do really well with this. Your initial 'interview'/presentation was the best and I think this is why the panel of judges put you in the running. Looking forward to seeing your solo project this week!
hhmmm, If I didnt mention you - I'm sorry. Obviously you have not struck my 'design cord'.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

I really thought that this was going to just be a repeat of last year - the wacko and the "glamoliscious" repeat and some shopaholics in the mix - the jury is still out on the shopaholics - but Sparkle Josh was really a surprise from the first show. He definitely is NOT a repeat of last year with the nutsy glamor design girl. Too bad Lisa was eliminated first; she didn't do as bad as last years oddball. Remember last year when challenge 3 was to design by using items purchased at the beauty supply store, auto repair store, etc - come on now, no designer in their right mind is going to purposely go to any of those places exclusively and base a room on what they can find - but that was the challenge - come up with something that actually looks good using an unusual source. This is where the rubber will meet the road for several people and I can't wait to see what the individual challenge brings out. Can Robb buy a car door for $1???? The dollar store will never be the same ever again. Remember Alice - she was a quiet force in the background until the trash was taken out, then she was able to come forward - Kim seems to be Alice - and Sparkle is definitely David in that they both jumped out front from the beginning. Also - being a whiz at contstruction does not make a good designer - it just means you know how to build something and won't cut off your fingers doing it.

Adriana and Todd; how about a little respect for the other designers on your team? Neeraja's fate was written on the wall in the first episode!Poor Lisa forgot that the judges were her "clients." I really enjoy Will and Sparkle Josh; both their designs and personalities. My "beef": the "triple threat" should be design, hosting, and execution of the design plan. Inevitably, one team or solo designer does not finish in time...this to me is worse than not being able to build a "quarter pipe" (which by the way belongs in the backyard, not the living room)!

I think I may be having a flashback to last season...yes, Josh may have been a bit passive but it looks like more than a few others are, too. Why pick him out unless Rob adds so much to the show in terms of conflict? Hand painting brick? Please...it hurts to even type the words.
Humility and talent can co-exist. And probably create a likeable host. But may not create the friction for the next few episodes.
The producer's need to realize that us viewers aren't so stupid. If there isn't more reason that we're not seeing on the show to eliminate these designers in the early stages, then please help us out. All we get is what they give us.

I like Will...he may surprise us...I see hints of his taste I hope its a promise fulfilled.

This is my first reality show and if these finalists are the cream of the crop I have serious concerns about the future of design. They need to watch more HGTV to learn some of the basics.
However, the show is interesting show business; very entertaining!

I'm a huge fan & have watched all the shows, including reruns! Adriana really knows her stuff around the power tools! You go girl! Hopefully she can design as well. I can't wait to see what Sparkle does on his own. This next week will be interesting. I picked David early on last year...having a really hard time this year though. I must say, so far I think the right ones are cancelled.

So glad Neeraja and Josh are gone....so painful to watch. I'm liking everyone else so far. I think Scott needs to stop crying for two seconds to do some work though and Will should stop complaining and just do his job. What a complainer. He's worse than Robb. If Robb would stop getting in fights with people, he's got some good talent to show, as well. My favorites are Adriana, Todd and Josh. Can't wait to see what they do next week with their own designs.

lwatkins- you have no idea what you are talking about. Get over the shoes and all the drama. We want a design star who can actually design, build and has leadership skills. The only ones I've seen so far with all of those qualities are Josh and Todd. I think they stand out because people actually respect them and listen to them. That is called good leadership, not being a bully.
Posted by Brian – August 8, 2007 9:32 PM
The only design stars in the group are Todd and Josh. I could see both of them having their own show and they would be really exciting and fun to watch. All the others don't have enough skill or creativity to pull it off.
Posted by Lesley – August 8, 2007 9:26 PM
It makes me sick that you all are demonizing people for actually not gossiping and not taking sides and for being nice to everyone. The comments about Todd being a bully is soooo unjustified. He is the ONLY person who hasn't said a mean comment about anyone and who is actually friends with EVERYONE. Good for him for supporting Robb. I think it's completely RUDE of everyone else to make Robb the enemy and skapegoat!
Robb may have a strong personality, but so do MOST of these contestants. I find Neeraja, Scott, Will and Josh to be more annoying and ridiculously dramatic than anyone.

I hated both kitchens! A Fountain...what is she thinking...WASTE OF SPACE! That would have been ripped out right after the camera was off. Crackle...how original...has he walked into the cabinet department lately...crackle is NEVER done to that extent...Now do we even have to comment about the tile...I do not think you have to be a designer to know you better know how much surface you have to cover...HINT: free paper in tile department that tell you how to measure to determine what you need...Lord help us if we actually do some multiplication...they have the calculator feature on EVERY cell phone.
I LOVE Sprakle Josh! He realizes his personal tastes are his, but when he designs he considers the space and the owners, as well as the fuction...Keep up the work Sparkle Josh!
Kim...who R U?...What can you do?...Let's see something...anything!

Several people have complained about Vern's being too harsh in his comments. I disagree. Expectations are extremely high for the contestants who made it this far; it's expected that they meet very high standards in design, execution, and meeting deadlines and budgets, as well as carrying out the criterea for the task. When Vern has been critical, it has been because a designer fell short of those high standards, often very far short.
I think Vern's comments are usually right on the money. He doesn't strike me as someone who enjoys hurting people's feelings at all, but he is straightforward in his critiques. It would be a waste of everyone's time to have a judge who tries so hard not to hurt feelings that he just comes off as wishy-washy.
To the person who didn't think it was fair for Vern to complain about the black-tile team not finishing -- finishing was the whole point of the challenge. They had a certain amount of time and a certain amount of money. When one of the teams didn't meet the deadline, should the judges have just let it go? It WAS irresponsible of the team to leave the kitchen unfinished. Real people live in that house and use that kitchen.
I enjoy Design Star and am looking forward to seeing how future episodes unfold.

Are the judges and producers at all worried if they have a Design Star in the group? I agree with others that Sparkle Josh, Will, and Scott have demonstrated talent at this point. Regarding these kitchen makeovers. I was wondering if any one of the contestants watch as much HGTV as I do--especially Designed to Sell? They are always redoing cabinets and countertops, and carrying out simple, tasteful, and functional designs on a budget. After watching HGTV I knew enough to use 1 foot square granite tiles--with no grout lines! They are cut with a rented wet-saw and a jigsaw. I probably could install formica countertops and do the sink cut-out as well. Instead of the ugly (and likely to collapse) island, I would have torn it out and purchased an intersting piece of furniture that could have supported a butcher block top. Anything would have looked better than that top. All of these ideas would have been in budget and easy (or easier) to accomplish. Again, from watching Designed to Sell, I would have changed up the look of some of the top cabinets with glass inserts. The judges, I'm sure would have noticed if the teams had tried to coordinate finishes on the lights, handles, curtain rods, and faucet. Did either team change any of the lighting--under cabinet lights, pendant lights. More light of any kind? The biggest disaster was the faux Tuscan kitchen. Robb has to have his show cancelled soon!

Wow I can't believe all you people have so much time on your hands to be blogging about this show. I love it love it love it

No one is outstanding in this group
Posted by L – August 8, 2007 6:35 PM
First, my take is that you may not like the Tuscan kitchen and you may not like Todd and Robb, but the challenge was to redo the kitchen for $10K in a very limited period of time. The accomplished the goal; the other team failed. Scoreboard, baby!
Second: Honestly, I think this thing is rigged (remember, it's a "reality" show -- and isn't held to the same rules as a "game" show). However, if there is any shred of real judging, then I'd like to echo the sentiments of many who have suggested rotating judges. I'd like to see one judge rotated each week to bring some perspective to the show. I think it'd be great to bring in some "old school" HGTV stars, like Chris Casson-Madden, Michael Payne, Joan Steffend, Susanne Whang, and Kitty Bartholomew, and put them in the judges seat. After all, their hard work built HGTV -- they know what it really takes to be a design star.
Third, who died and made Vern Yip design king? He is annoying, arrogant, and a pathetically bad actor. His little "I was nauseous..." speech after the kitchen tile fiasco left me unconvinced.
Fourth, can anyone tell the folks down at HGTV that Clive is getting a wee bit overexposed? I swear, it's like turning on ABC in 2002, when you couldn't watch for an hour without seeing Drew Carey. Alton Brown has somewhat the same problem on FoodTV, but at least he brings some knowledge to the table; Clive is nothing more than a narrator. I don't think he's designed or built a thing in his life.
Fifth... Sparkle Josh....puhleassse??? I'll say this, if you put them together, I'd watch a Todd & Robb show -- I think HGTV needs more practical, "how-to" shows. They work well together and they have good project management skills. I'm sorry Will and Robb have developed such bad chemistry, because I could see him in that same role as well. I could also see Adriana in a role like that. Maybe take Todd and Adriana, put them together, and do a new take on the old "Hometime" show; that could work really well, as it could be done in a Spanglish format to reach a crossover audience.
Sixth -- echoing other sentiments here -- enough with the crying, teary eyed men! Scott, Sparkle, listen up -- the next time you feel yourself tearing up, just imagine Vito Corleone slapping Johnny Fontaine yelling, "BE A MAN!!!"
Finally, I hope that whatever they get out of this season is better than Colorsplash. I like David, but I've stopped buying Ambien since that show came on.

In spite of telling all of you last week that I was not going to watch, I watched a bit of the beginning, and the very end of this snow. No more!! I'm done!!!! First of all, I'd like to see Vern Yip do all his own decorating and construction on a kitchen for $10,000 with 28 work hours. He is Yip the Pip!!!!! Who in their right mind would ever tackle a kitchen with that time and budget? They need to all be given great credit for even trying!!
Sigining off for good, PLUS I'm writing a complaint letter to HGTV!!

not that it matters what we think since it is already down to the last 2 awaiting our vote...... I desparately hope Robb leaves soon. Cannot stand his personality. Walks right in to the traps set before him. doesn't work well with others. very immature and unproven design abilty.

Too much petty squabbling is going to be the reason some of the designers are going home. Organic Josh was nothing but a cry baby - he couldn't handle tools and opened himself up to being critized by Robb. When Robb demanded good workmanship - Josh cried to anyone who would listen - Will, Scott, Sparkle Josh and Neraja - each one of those who is worried about popularity rather than design. Will, Scott and Josh, wake up! Robb isn't the enemy, requiring those working with tools and building things right does NOT make a person difficult! The three of you will be next to leave if you can't start to appreciate a person's strengths and let them play to those strengths! Demanding perfection is a positive attribute! The three of you just want someone to kiss your butts. Neraja and organic Josh deserved to leave. BOTH of them were incompetent and lacked any design skill. They were knick knack buyers who were ready to blame all of their failures on others instead of assuming responsibility for their own failures and incompetence.
Your reaction to Robb remaining indicated your complete ignorance of what this competition is about. Design, competence, excellence, leadership. You let organic Josh's complaints about Robb suck you into his petty world. And Neraja was just as bad because Robb wouldn't suck up to her, so she slammed him.
The three of you deserve to leave next because you're sheep, you lack vision and you lack the ability to read people. I'm tired of hearing nasty comments about the other people in your competition.
Christina is included for this next comment: EACH ONE OF YOU THAT WANTS TO BADMOUTH ANOTHER DESERVES TO LEAVE IMMEDIATELY! If you can't focus on design then get out!!!! Instead of finding fault with another person, present your ideas - compromise isn't a bad thing - but you didn't have your own ideas, just criticism of others. In a team setting - stand there and own up to the final product instead of blaming someone else. If you did a space, you ARE responsible for the final outcome. Standing in front of judges saying you compromised or so and so did this and that shows you're weak and incompetent!
The first show, when Robb and Josh were in front of the judges, Robb showed class and leadership. Regarding the pillows, he told the judges it wasn't what they wanted, but they ran out of time to get the right stuff. It was Josh who started crying "Robb did it". Robb was willing to take the lumps, and stand as a team. Each of you could learn from Robb instead of tearing him down.
Will, Scott, sparkle Josh, and Christina - I would NEVER let you work in my home - you're NOT designers, you're BLAMERs. Instead of finding solutions, you find fault. Instead of being creative, you critize others for their vision and efforts. If any of you were my employee, I would FIRE you, because you AREN'T doing your JOB!
I hope each of you are the next to go! Robb has creative ideas and he works his butt off. The four of you want to shop and gossip! NOT design star material! NOT even designer material! Not even gopher employee material!

I was glad to see Naraja & Josh both out of there. I wasn't sure that I cared for Josh Sparkle much; however, the diningroom was beautiful. I liked the mirror & the round table.
I still like Will though, if he can hold up.
Kim is also kind of good. Hooray to Andrea for
her carpenter ability.

Wow! You guys are harsh!!
I have worked in the television "reality" world for 5 years now, and just so you all know, the producers and editors are creating the drama, not the contestants. It's all about ratings so give these folks a break. You all have some pent up hostility! Wow!
Posted by Matt – August 8, 2007 1:05 AM
Can people stop criticizing for 1 minute to realize that all of these designers are on a SHOW and you are seeing 15 seconds of each person during a 3 day period. The show is also edited from 3 days of film to a total of 40 minute air time. I'm sure the producers are trying to fit in any "drama" they can get their hands on.
Judge their work, not them. They are all trying to WIN a contest remember. They only way to stand out is to show your intensity, leadership and passion.
Posted by Dan – August 8, 2007 12:57 AM
Do any of you actually know what it means to be a "designer". I have run my own interior design company for over 20 years and the only people I would like to have on my team are Todd and Josh(sparkle). They are the ONLY ones who are not involved in pointless drama and who actually have great ability and design sense. I can't believe that leadership and creativity are seen as negative to most of you people. Yikes. I'm embarrassed for all of you.

Forget about the drama on the show, all of you who are blogging are worse than them. I can't believe that most of you are judging these people on the show like you have known them forever. You've seen 2 minutes TOTAL of all of them. Grow up people. Who are you to talk. Who are the real immature bullies?!

Wow...lots of wordy, wordy blogging goin on..just wanted to see if anyone agreed with me that, yeah, those kitchens were really baaaad, and yes, that kitchen island looked way out of proportion - and yes, not structurally sound either..have to agree with the majority, Sparkle Josh seems to be a standout at this point..didn't think Lisa should've gone last week either..thought her space was not bad...
Note to Shari from 8/5 re where to buy that kind of dining room with comfy leather chairs? Try looking just about anywhere..they're all over the place!

If this show is demonstrative of what professional designers will do to your kitchen, I am sorely afraid. I have never used a designer, because one, I never thought I could afford the service and two, I was afraid I would not pick a good designer.
I felt extremely sorry for the families in both houses. Will was the only one with the sense to know that a pantry will be sorely missed especially when the fountain has mold growing on it. And those cabinets were awful. I hated them. Rob was a chemist, not a designer. He took great cabinets and turned them into waste products (to put it nicely). If I were the owners, I would have been happy to see the Josh dining room but I would have cried when I entered the kitchen. I hope the owners did not pay the $10,000. It was not a professional job and I am not sure if I would be willing to "try out" a designer at my own risk, especially if it would be the inept tile lady who didn't measure. If I want to do tile incorrectly and go to HD twenty times, I might as well do it myself.
Keep up this show and you will make all of America afraid to put their houses in the hands of "professionals" who do not have their own shows.

I think Robb needs to go next - he is too consumed with insisting he is better than anyone else! Where is the design? Sparkle Josh is my pick so far as the next design star. I think Scott has a good design sense but cannot take the crying. Will - need to see what he can do. Todd - good carpenter not sure about his true design skills. The ladies...Need to see what Christina can do, she present well on the camera and seems comfortable. Adriana and Kim - not sure if they will succeed.

I wanted to read everyones comments, but I just couldnt wait to write my own. I cant wait to see everyone design their own room then we can see who articulate in delivering and communicating their choices. I agree that Will and Josh are on top! I think Scott miht be too but I cant decipher just yet. and I have this strange feeling Kim might last longer than we think. However SPARKLE Josh is the winner in my eyes. He talks to the camera,he is a great team player and is funny, interesting, captivating and has Talent! I think Will does to on another note because he explained how to paint that wall in the kitchen where as I can just go and create that myself....and he was THE voice of reason in the stupid Tuscan team...its a shame they walked all over him...(who comes up with Tuscan of all things anyway?)
I love how Clive described the cabinets ats fauxed and crackled to death! It was hilarious (because he was right!) and when Robb came back in after almost getting canceled for the second time (I new his inconsiderate self would jump up and down like a fool when he entered the room) jumping up and down with carpenter Todd. That was so so so just plain horrible, someone gets canceled and he laughs like a circus clown not even realizing that his decisions and attitude were really the worst of the bunch.
But Thanks HGTV for making a show like this for people who are designers everyday! (now where is the show for specifically graphic desgners...maybe one day....:-) GO SPARKLE JOSH! GO WILL!
Posted by Halle – August 7, 2007 9:48 PM
Perhaps the goal here is exciting TV. Maybe Robb Mariani is a plant, secretly put there by the producers with the instructions to act as horribly as he can until all of America hates him so much, they have to tune in just to see if he gets eliminated.
Posted by Jeffrey – August 7, 2007 5:57 PM
This is a show about design and I think that should be the basis of all decisions -- NOT "production." If viewers want artificial "production" suspense, there are lots of options, e.g., Big Brother and Survivor. I watch Design Star for design, and decisions should be only those of the expert designers. There is no place for artificial "production suspense" based decisions or skewed summaries of untelevised hours. I expect this level of integrity from HGTV, believe I'm in the majority on this, and hope that the producers recognize this and deliver it--at least in future seasons as this one is in the can and already leaving an artificial aftertaste. (I also wish they would stop presenting David Bromstad as beefcake: it cheapens him and his show and detracts from his talent.) People are HGTV viewers because they want to be. HGTV does not need ratings gimmicks and can only lose viewers by employing them.

Okay, now the fangs come out. As I said last week, I think Lisa got robbed. Not that I think she would ever have her own show, but I probably would have elimated Neeraja, Josh (not sparkle)or Robb before Lisa. This week the judges made the right choices and if they could have elimanated 3, it probably would have been Robb. Maybe next week. Adriana does not work well with others ( a little too full of herself?). Christina is like a little mouse and I don't see her lasting too much longer. Kim is grounded, but not assertive. Todd looks to me like this is some sort of a game to him and doesn't seem like he's taking this seriously. Scott, Josh (sparkle) and Will, final 3; now that would be a contest.
Posted by Julie – August 7, 2007 3:45 PM
What's with wearing sunglasses inside the house, Todd? Majority rules and fake greenery? A lion statue and fountain replaces a pantry? Just sad to hear so-called adults shouting down a team-mate who expresses what every viewer was saying "don't lose the pantry!!!!" Todd and his beret-wearing sidekick were downright creepy. I can just imagine the family digging their old furniture out and demanding that their ruined cabinets be replaced. Meanwhile Scott and Sparkle Josh were total heroes. I am so hopeful that I see Scott, Will, and Sparkle Josh in the final four. I can already see how those 3 can actually do the show, I'd hire any of them to redecorate my house.

I find it quite interesting how reality shows can make most of America feel however the program wants them to feel about people. For instance, I have read most of the entries and most seem to have a concensus on each person. Does ANYONE other than me wonder what REALLY goes on? These hour long programs are hacked and cut drastically from the actually 20 hours or so of work. Who is doing this cutting? Who decides what "fights" to keep and what great design choices one person makes over another? Please realize that the makers of this program are already "programming" most of America to like the person they want chosen in the end. Granted, I do have my own personal opinions about each person, but I also realize that those opinions are from several hours of a show that was created by cutting and pasting several blips of time into an hour long show.
I hope this all makes sense. I just see such harsh comments about people from others who don't even know them. I don't know a single one of the 11 contestants and, again, while I do have an opinion about each one of them, I realize they are formed from a snippit of the true reality. I would love it if HGTV would run the whole 20 hours of the challenge on line so we can truly see what goes on instead of having to see it through someone else's eyes. Not that I would watch the full 20 hours (I do have a life), but at least when I see the 30 seconds of a fight on TV, I could come online and get the beginning, middle and end of it for myself.
How do we know that Kim and Christina don't give alot of input? Or that Todd just took over from Josh instead of Josh making that decision? Or even if those we think are just angels really are? We only know what we are shown for an hour each week on TV. And hey, what we are shown may be the complete and honest truth. Maybe Robb really is a jerk, but I would just like to know for certain before making snap judgements about any of them.
Just my thoughts. Good luck to them all. They each have a dream and are doing what it takes to make it come true.

The only female that stands a chance is KIm.
Adrianna's ego is too big, like a female Todd. If I had to watch a show with Christina every week, i would throw up. Too much sugar and whine in that Georgia peach and while most designers are trying to create storage, she takes it away for a useless fountain??? Insane. maybe she would do okay on designing for the rich and famous. Go sparkle Josh, Will, and Scott--you go boys!
Posted by donna – August 7, 2007 2:12 PM
ROBB MUST GO AND SHOULD HAVE NEVER MADE IT PAST CHALLENGE 1. The Tuscany kitchen may have been complete but the unfinished kitchen was much more functional as a kitchen. Who puts a fountain in a kitchen, I can see the kids coming in from outside taking a drink and rinsing their hands in it. Organic Josh was bullied by Robb in the first challenge and then like a fool he picks him for his team, organic Josh didn't get cancelled he was never there. Josh and Robb should have been long gone and it would have at least been interesting to see what Lisa would have come up with in future designs. Josh Sparkle is the shining star.
Posted by roe – August 7, 2007 1:13 PM
At the beginning there are many to choose from who could have their shows cancelled. I think the judges have been right. No one has been eliminated, in my opinion, who could carry a design show. I'm not sure why Lisa has so many supporters--big family, small town star?--I liked her (minus the funky glasses) but it really looked like middle school art class stuff to me. I really like David B. and think he's very talented but as someone else mentioned, HGTV has not given him a good show. Tired by the 2nd week of the owners oohing and ahhing over how they can't believe they have "the design star." But HGTV must have someone shaking up things with producers and not to the good as far as I'm concerned. Watched a late night episode of Designed to Sell last night with a new (at least to me) couple. Basically they put in a granite counter, painted the kitchen, living room and dining room and added cornices and chair rail. It did look better but it sure wasn't a half hour's worth of TV--seemed to mostly be about goofy shots of the female designer (sorry, don't remember her name). I used to love HGTV but right now I'm not enjoying it much. Oh, well, more time to do my own projects.
Posted by merryhaha – August 7, 2007 12:43 PM
My opinion, and that's truly what it is, is that I think Todd is going to win. Yes I know he's a bit arrogant, but face it he's confident in what he can do. The first challenge I was a bit skeptical, but he made it his own and owned it. The judges understood and loved it. He's a great carpenter, but I'm wondering about his design abilities. I'm looking forward to seeing what he comes up with for this weeks show, I hope he proves me right.
You also have to think about marketability. For both women and gay men who are the main viewers of these type of shows, Todd looks fabulous without a shirt on...think about it?
Like I said this is just my opinion for what it's worth.....commence the blasting...

If we're looking at design talent, Rob and Adianna need to go next. Once we get to the final four -- the designers with true talent and skill -- the show will get interesting. Right now, it's still like the American Idol auditions. I'd love to see Sparkle Josh, Scott, Todd and Will in the final four. I prdict another make design star this year -- the girls just don't have it!

It's very sad to read a statement that someone posted when they referred to someone crying is a sign of weakness, insecurity and failure! Wow! What a cold and uncompassionate thing to say and have that kind of view on life. Crying and showing emotion is NOT a weakness!!!!! It is also NOT a sign of failure and insecurity!!!!!! Viewing life in with that opinion is very cold and depressing. NOT being moved to tears at certain times is a sign of a very cold and uncompassionate heart. Scott has such a kind and compassionate person. I felt so sorry for him trying to do his best to compete and then being crippled with back pain and not being able to do his best. Those tears were out of frustration (and stress of what he needed to do), pain and how he was so moved that his team was trying to help him. Everything combined was where the tears came from. (Those tears were a release from all that frustration and disappointment that his health was affecting his talent). Completely understandable from another compassionate heart who is very secure, stable, successful, happy and VERY strong because of all the things I've been through in my life. A warm and caring heart makes a strong and more meaningful life!!
Take a look at Scott's website and view his talent, his TV appearances on Extreme Weddings and on a talk show where he was the featured designer. Very impressive! Very talented and comfortable with the cameras. Very lovable and people oriented!
I really don't think it's fair that Scott is being judged so unfairly because he has shown some emotion (and very understandable considering the situation). He didn't cry on the first show and he had wonderful ideas and a successful area. Sparkle Josh was shown shedding some tears as was Christina, Adrianna, and Neeraja. Showing emotion shows me how compassionate and caring their personality must be which goes a long way in life. I wish this world had alot more people with warm and caring hearts!
The three that impress me the most is Scott, Sparkle Josh and Christina. They are the most passionate ones whose talents and personalities shine the most to me! I think they are very likeable. Will, Kim and sometimes Adriana are also.

Watching anything on tv is generally depressing these days. However, when David Bromstad's "Color Splash" comes on, I know that I will find a great designer who truly cares about pleasing a client. David Bromstad has 'heart.' This trait is refreshing. The relationship among David, Danielle, and the clients is always positive. The client has a need. David and Danielle fulfill that need...in a way that the viewer feels that they aim to please. And they succeed.
I find some of those charming, caring, thoughtful, sensitive, traits in SPARKLE JOSH, WILL, and SCOTT. All of the others have "I" trouble, big egos! Their focus seems to be on themselves, not the clients.
So, HGTV, please give us another "positive" show to watch. A blogger suggested "Ebony and Ivory." That would work. But, I'd hate to see Scott eliminated. So, how about "Ebony, Ivory, and Quartz"? Ebony, Ivory, and Crystal? Ebony, Ivory, and Malachite? You get my drift.

I find it odd that I generally don't care for reality TV at all and typically only watch home improvement shows if i can relate to the actual project. However, I really enjoy Design Star oddly enough. The personalities they've selected for this year's cast are about what I would have expected on a 'reality'-ish based show. A mix of many personalities, styles and demographics.
I've enjoyed predicting which contestants will be getting the hook and am 3 for 3 so far. The last show was tough to call though.
My thoughts so far...
Neerajah was the easy choice this week. After last weeks offering ("you decorated, you didn't design") and this weeks dismal attempt at project management. Who doesn't take 2 minutes to determine the material requirements for a tiling job? Um, twice, especially when under such time contraints. Buh bye.
Synthetic Josh was also my pick this week, but with some carried over bias from last week. I struggled with chosing someone from Neeraja's team due to their complete failure to finish the project. His leadership was hijacked by Todd, and my initial impression is that the rest of the team can thank Todd later. The 'democracy' may have shouldered aside some good ideas and valid points, but with such time and budget constraints and 5 people eager to leave their mark on a project it still seems like the best way to settle issues. Josh, you chose invisibility over leadership, and for a few moments I thought it may actually save you.
Scott, hmm, seems genuine and likable, but he really needs some safety goggles so he doesn't keep getting sawdust in his eyes. And I'm still trying to recall what his contributions were to the kitchen project. Hope you can perform on your own Scott. Wouldn't want my perfect record to include you next week.
Kim is another person destined for ambiguity. Aside from being Neeraja's partner in crime on an ill fated shopping mission, what have you done again? Hair styles?
Adrianna is trying sooo hard to prove herself. Too hard. She's billed herself as being skilled in construction, but I'd like another look at that counter she built to see if it can support the weight of my cup of coffee and slice of toast. Aside from the room she did with Christina, which I really did NOT like, I'm still waiting to see some design ideas.
Sparkling Josh was the only person on Neeraja's team that I didn't consider booting this week. He got his hands dirty, on day one, doing some demo. While on day two he had to go shopping, all by himself. I did like the mirror and table, but was that enough to win the competition? The room he did with Will was my favorite from week one, but don't rest on your laurels.
Will was good week one when teamed with Josh, and I moaned when the 'democracy' out voted him when it came to the fountain over pantry space. Yet, I'll have to wait and see if he can do anything besides paint and pick out pillow covers.
Todd really threw me with the quarter pipe in week one, but his no nonsense work ethic and construction skills carried the day. Week two showed me another set of skills that he's cleverly hidden behind his surf punk demeanor. Leadership and project management. Many have called him a bully and I'm not sure why. A huge void was created when Synthetic Josh was made team lead. Rather than stand by and watch them fail as a team, he seemed to take the reins willingly offered up by Josh, and complete the project ahead of schedule. When I need work done at my house, Todd's the one i'm calling based on what i've seen so far. After checking out his website I found that there is some artistic skill that the show hasn't been able to capture as of yet. I'm putting my 100% record on the line and saying he'll be around for several more shows. Finalist?
Christina is someone I can't figure out. Her week one performance was bleh, and I didn't like the way she seemed to blame it all on Adrianna. Week two showed me nothing other than a broken nail. Hiding behind other cast members won't get you far despite your beauty.
Robb, everyone's favorite topic. The drama he's created is one of the main reasons I find myself liking the show. Taking the day off week one to find a beat up car door? Didn't work for me, but the animosity you created did. He deserved to stand in front of the judges facing the hatchet. Week two? I wouldn't want you near my kitchen cabinets, but I did understand that you were under unforgiving time and monetary constraints and made the best of it. Your people skills on the other hand need serious work. You've apparently bonded with Todd, but I think he'd bond with anyone. I'll try to keep you off my ballot for the hilarity, but time to step up AND shut up. Wait, I take that back, don't shut up, maybe work on your delivery.

First let me say that I am enjoying this years Design star just as much as I did last year!!
I look forward to it every Sunday!!
I think the judges did a good job this week, letting go of Neeraja and Josh, though I did feel sorry for him. Todd and Robb really pushed him to the curb on the last challenge.
I can't wait for the individual challenges next week and see what everyone does with their individual spaces! I am pulling for Kim right now since she got slammed for having not impressed the judges.
Posted by calaska – August 7, 2007 4:58 AM
I think Josh Sparkle, Will and Scott have the most talent so far. I would watch any of their shows! I think Josh and Will made a wonderful team in the first episode. I thought Kim and Scott did, too. I think Kim has a lot of personality, but I would like to see what she can do on her own. Robb and Todd are so annoying. I cringe everytime they're on. I hope they both leave the show soon. Todd has a lot of talent, but he's so egotistical. I really liked Adriana in the episode where they were picking contestants, but I wasn't really impressed by her or Christina in the first episode and their inability to work together. I really liked Lisa, and I would have liked to see her continue for a few more episodes to see what she could do. I thought she was really creative and had a fun personality. I didn't think the foyer was that bad. I'd give her points for working by herself and coming up with something original. As for "Color Splash," I LOVE David's show. He is absolutely brilliant. His sense of style and his artwork is amazing and inspiring.
Posted by Sue – August 7, 2007 3:14 AM
I believe that "Glitter" Josh saved the day for his team and he deserved to win the special prize. When I saw his audition, I was concerned that he would employ excessive glamour, but his actual work is family-friendly. He has a rare talent for making the perfect selections in a small amount of time.
Robb appears to be very impulsive, both in his critical statements to his competitors and in his approach to decorating. I believe that he owes sincere apologies to the other contestants and
most definitely to Will. His attitude is unpleasant and I cannot imagine his becoming the next Design Star. Viewership would suffer if he
doesn't quickly learn to apologize.
Posted by Sara Anne – August 7, 2007 3:08 AM
I agree with Sparkle Josh and Will. But I want to say that if there is a problem with David's show it is the vehicle that was chosen for him. He was outstanding last season and maybe he should have more input into what he would like to do. As talented as he is he deserves a better showcase for himself. Looking forward to the rest of Design Star and hope it is as good as last year.

At first I was very disappointed at the chosen crew for the new show. I thought these designers were Jerry Springer "leftovers", until it started to slim down. I bet a lot of very normal great designers like myself were never chosen for a reason...it's T.V. In the application was a section of the training/schooling the applicant had to fill in. Half the contestants on the show have no experience of designer traits. I believe these were the "fill-in" contestants who didn't matter and were going to get knocked off quickly. It made the show look and feel a little uninteresting this year. I hope next year, the pickings go a bit more real. As for the winner of this years' show, I've chosen Sparkle Josh. He has already captured the audience with a gimmick, has some sense of design and he seems to be comfortable in front of a camera. It's exactly what a show needs. A strong young man, unusual, talented man with a sense of humor. Or I could be all wrong and people will choose a female this year with a hard-to-understand accent. Those are your runner ups, I hope. HGTV needs to clean up all the cry babies now, it's not what we as fans want to see, nor a producer want to produce. Weakness is the sign of failure and insecurity. Who needs that when they are about to shoot a whole new show, and the new host has to pop a prozac in order to say, "Hello, I'm Whimpie, the new chosen designer of my new show - Slippery When Wet". Gesss. I can only see Cleave ripping his hair out. Anyways, hope to see a better response and direction from next years choices. Good Luck to All, and to All...Good Luck!

The right choices were made in this weeks eliminations of Neeraja and organic Josh. They did not lead or contribute. As everyone thinks, Robb should be the next one to leave. I am so excited to watch next week where true design skills are individually tested. I like the premise of a 99 cents store. Sparkle Josh should do real well as he proved himself as a smart shopper this week. I really enjoyed seeing someone go out and purchase everything necessary to complete an attractive dining area and staying within the budjet. He is a thrifty shopper as Vern was on "trading spaces". It's ok to make and create some things, but I think rooms look much nicer with store bought goods. Good luck to all the contestants next Sunday. I'll be watching!!!!

I cannot understand in all that is holy, what the judges were thinking when they decided to keep Robb over Joah Foss. I would have prefered to see Josh stay even if he had slept through the entire show.
Mr. Robb is WAY too big for his britches and needs to be taken down a few levels. He certainly has a high opinion of himself. Did everyone see the look of angst on the majority of the other designers when he returned to the Green Room? He can't get a long with anyone - why put the other designers in such an uncomfortable position - to teach them how to work well with difficult clients?
I totally agree with the decision to send Neeraja home. At the very beginning of the show, she bragged on how she had installed 6,000 some square feet of ceramic tile and how it would be like second nature for her. Obviously, she was the grunt person who did the work AFTER the tile had been selected, purchased and delivered! They (Neeraja & Kim were gone for what, six hours on day two picking out tile. Didn't purchase enough to complete the job the first time, sends another person out on the third day for what should have been the balance of the requirement, only to find out that she still didn't have enough to complete the job. How much did HDTV pay that second couple for not losing it the moment they walked into their kitchen? I'd have picked up the phone and called my lawyer!
PS - Scott has got to give up the tears! They don't do anything to endear himself to the viewers.

I think the two canceled shows should have been from the losing team. The team that didn't finish the project should have lost two members. Why should Kim be allowed to stay b/c she's a team player on a losing team & Organic Josh be sent home when he was a team player on the winning team? All of this crying rubbed off on me during this 2nd episode. I cried when they canceled Organic Josh. He may not have made it to the end, but should have made it past Kim or Robb.
Obviously Robb is only there b/c he encourages drama. He should go along w/ Kim next. Kim hasn't done anything memorable except for assist w/ the unfinished tile project. The faux finishing & crackling was terrible. They family obviously liked it b/c they already had some above their doorway. I would have been disgusted if it were my kitchen (right along w/ the terrible fountain, sorry Christina).
I'm beginning to like Sparkle Josh. I originally thought he was only chosen for his personality & to create interest. I like his budget shopping & his confidence. I think he would make a VERY interesting show for some people & maybe not so much for others. He's just so BOLD & over the top. I would watch him.
Christina has great style & can stand up for herself based on what we saw in the 1st episode. I hope she shows us some more of her style & personality. I really like her, but she needs to pick it up. I think she could make a good show. I would watch her.
Will has talent as well. I'm looking forward to seeing more of his work. I think he could make a good show. I would watch him as well.
Scott cries way too much. He's seems really nice though.
Adriana appears to be a great carpenter. Great work on the 2nd episode all by yourself! However, her designing/decorating style was horrible in the 1st episode. Thank goodness Christina stepped up a little, but wish she would have more.
Oh, I almost forgot, Naarajah obviously needed to go after that 1st episode bar & the 2nd episode tile project. She was very tough though.

I am amazed at some of the comments posted. . . I guess people really enjoy watching a bunch of insecure, overly emotional people who enjoy throwing each other under the bus. Todd is the only contestant who doesn't get involved in all of the unecessary drama, he is a team player, has a mind of his own, makes decisions and sticks with them . . . how is that considered arrogance? I find that great TV and I cannot wait to watch his show when he WINS!!!!! TODD IS MY FAVORITE TOOL!!!!

This season has been such a disappointment. The group of people involved in the first Design Star challenge all had outgoing personalities, talent and all worked well as a team. Not one of these new contestants has stood out like David Bromstad did right from the beginning. This group, in my opinion, has very little talent and spends most of their time blaming each other for their failures. Unless something changes, I don't think any one of them come close to being a Design Star.
Posted by Cathy – August 7, 2007 12:30 AM
So far I have pretty much agreed with the judges so far in each case(especially with the "weighted" factor of "you have to leave some of the most hated until close to the end- for drama). I chose the worst in every group so far- poor planning etc, and when it came down to the worst of ??- you eliminate the one who has a meeker personality. If you're not a winner-be obnoxious!! It will keep you on the show longer because you're needed for drama!

Please, please, not another Sparkle Josh host of the latest new show. HGTV is stamping these out like cookie cutters already. When does the voice of reason get to be heard among the masses? Give WILL a chance! Great shows of the past were hosted by smart, logical, practical, talented men the likes of Bob Vila, Norm, Michael Payne, Henry Harrison from Help Around the House - men who would never put a skateboard ramp in a living room, paint faux bricks on a backsplash, or use up valuable pantry space with an ugly fountain. What design school is putting out these people and who on God's earth told them they had talent? Someone please send in Dr. Spock with a shot of logic for the management of HGTV!

Didn't you want to strangle Neeraja when Kim was saying that the tiling should have been done the first day and Neeraja answers, "Now we know!" Did she think she would get penalized if she bought too much tile? Like you can't estimate something even without a ruler? Begone!
Posted by janek – August 6, 2007 10:09 PM
What drama this week! Wow. Glad to see Neeraja go, but Kim should have gone with her, since she didn't do anything at all, but the tile. Green Josh was nice, but boring and had nothing to add. I liked Green Josh's group the best though because they actually did a lot of work in a very short time and their workmanship was well executed. I think the next design star could be Todd, Sparkle Josh, or Scott. Everyone seems to want Todd on their team so that says a lot, and Sparkle Josh is just fun and funny, and Scott has that dramatic side.

This show is great entertainment..I have to agree Sparkle Josh has great shopping skills..I need him for my home..

What's up with all the crying~! All the cry babies need to go. So far my favorites are Will, Todd and Josh(sparkle). They all have great personalities for camera and could all do really well with their own shows. All the other people haven't showed anything in regard to individuality, creativity or good design. What have Christina or Kim done? Nothing. Both are really boring to watch too.
Posted by Rachelle – August 6, 2007 9:15 PM
I love Sparkle Josh!!!He is a Design Star.Hands down he is the winner this year!!!!Everything he has done so far is outstanding!!He is so cute and funny,he is the star of this season!! Carol,Pittsburgh,Pa.

Whew! The team challenge is over. I despised both rooms but trying to achieve anything like a reasonable design that is well executed in such a short time and demanding some kind of group consensus is tough. It's not quite the real deal, so I should not expect a 1st class result.
However, some of the decsions and execution were pretty bad. Black tile???? No, no Najeera. Bye. Good decision by the judges. She seemed pretty egoistic and unschooled in the basics ( like measuring.)
I have a personal dislike for trendy design and Tuscan has been done to death. So, I felt bad for that team. It was a very cheap and tacky looking kitchen by the time they were done. The fountain was the worst choice and that confirms my low opinion of Christina. No imagination.
Najeera and Josh were ok choices to leave. Robb could have gone, too.
I am enjoying Josh. He gets it done, is confident and is clearly having a ball. He is my current fave. Will has the basics down and is calm and reasonable in a high pressure situation.
The show would be boring without the drama so I am sure the producers and judges deliberately chose some "goofs" to be on the show. When the goofs are voted off, we may have a fun show to watch.
I see Josh, Will, Christina and Kim in the finals.
I can't wait for the individual rooms next time. Then we will see who can cut it.
It's fun. I like Vern Yip's talent as a designer but he is too caustic.
I hope the get better judges next year. I would like to see Kenneth Brown, Candace Olsen and maybe Summer Baltzer (she is underrated in my opinion).
Also, the direction could be better. We never get a good enough look at the rooms and it all seems very rushed. Not sure how to fix that b/c 2 hours would be too long.
Anyhow, it's great fun.
Posted by Posh1 – August 6, 2007 7:56 PM
Neeraja is gone! Whoo Hoo!!! She just irritated me to no end...what was the comment she made in front of the judges about her and KIM wanted to do the tile...I never heard Kim speak up..Neeraja wanted to do it and didn't plan very well AND it looked like crap...well, so long as the homeowners liked it. Josh(green) he really didn't do anything for me anyway..the way he was walked all over last night just showed he was not up for this... Scott and Sparkle Josh are still my favorites!
Posted by Luigie – August 6, 2007 7:34 PM
I was so happy to see Neeraja go...finally. What a disaster from the beginning. Josh (green) showed no talent whatsoever, so I'm glad he's gone too. Robb could have definitely gone, as well as, Kim. Robb is obnoxious, but at least has some skills. So far Kim has showed us nothing! She just hides among other people and doesn't do anything. I think she put some tiles down and that's it. She's got to go.
I actually really liked Todd. He is the only one who gets stuff done. He doesn't cry, complain or whine either. Yay!! We definitely don't need a design star who cries all the time like Scott. Get over it.
Posted by brian – August 6, 2007 5:53 PM
I was really sorry to see Josh F. get cancelled. I think he had potential, but was totally rode over by Todd and Robb. He didn't take control of his team, but his first mistake was choosing Todd and then ended up getting handed Robb. Can you visualize how different it would have been if he'd selected Scott and Sparkle Josh? Sincerely hope Christina or Robb get axed next. I find them both abrasive.
Posted by sandyschu – August 6, 2007 5:48 PM
Too bad 3 people couldn't have gone home last night! Robb should have gone also. The crackle finish on the cabinets was awful. Really--Organic Josh fawning over fake vines and grapes! Did he lose his head or just forget that he was supposed to be the "green designer?" And dumb, dumb Nerraja not measuring for tile and then choosing black...no taste! I find it hard to believe she left with "new friends" (well, probably Scott and Sparkle Josh because I don't think either one has a mean bone in his body) but that's probably it. I'd love to know whom Vern was referring to with his "your personaility is caustic" comment -- must have been either Robb or Nerraja but they never showed enough of the clip to tell. Robb will probably be gone next week. Todd should stick with designing outdoor spaces and will probably go after Robb which will most likely (and hopefully) be next week. Kim needs to step up and show us if she really has any talent other than being a peacemaker. Will, Scott and Sparkle Josh are the real standouts in this group. And yes, David's show is getting boring, very quickly!
Posted by vegasgal – August 6, 2007 5:26 PM
Everyone keeps ripping on the fountain in the kitchen, and granted it did take up a ton of storage space, but it was the only true organic element in the entire space!!!! "WATER"
I don't know if most of you are aware but Vern Yip has his very own HGTV show premiering in September. It will be called Deserving Design. I can't wait to see how Americas favorite designer does himself. Also, I wonder why they are not promoting the heck out of the his show yet. Conflict of interest maybe Vern???
If Patrice was talking about Sparkle Josh & his pet tigers maybe he should bring them on his first show! What a howl. LOL I LOVE HIM TO DEATH
Posted by MICHELLE PITTSBURGH, PA – August 6, 2007 5:12 PM
I would be highly upset if they put a UNUSABLE FOUNTAIN IN THE MIDDLE OF MY KITCHEN! Outside in a garden would be nice but not in a kitchen.
Will is a smart man and stated early in the planning stage that it was a bad idea to take away functional space for the fountain but everyone wanted something soooo big and glamous they out voted against him.
I'm looking forward to seeing Will shine on the next show. He can make his own design choices and show us what he's all about.
My favorite design was Josh and Will's design of the room. They worked well together. I also liked what Josh design of the dining area of the kitchen.
I would like to see Josh and Will battle it out in the end.
Posted by Yvonne Craig – August 6, 2007 4:42 PM
I'm with the consensus in loving Sparkle Josh. He was deliberately campy and over-the-top in his audition to get noticed, but he showed last night he's got substance, too. And you HAVE to love someone who can line up those kinds of deals!
I felt awful for poor Will ... the only voice of reason among the "Tuscan" Kool-aid Drinkers. Will will shine in the next solo challenge without the dead weight -- and the hooting apeman calls -- of Todd & Robb (more on them farther on).
Adriana is a ferociously hard worker. I'm curious to see her solo design work.
And let's hope Kim gets a chance to show her stuff.
Scott: you're an emotional, bighearted sweetie, and here's hoping your back gets better.
Now for Christina. She's is not at all shy or unassertive or reticent. Christina's very passive-aggressive, as we saw from the first challenge. For the future, I predict some whispery Southern Belle bitcheries, continued pageant-queen-teeth-baring, and when her show gets cancelled, many teary assurances that she really wanted to be with her children anyway.
Organic Josh ... one less aging white suburban boy on television throwing fake gang signs at random is all for the good, don't you think?
One of my favorite moments of the episode was the appalled side glances the judges shared when the proud owners of the "Tuscan" kitchen were gushing over that tacky fountain ... particularly when the wife said she always wanted one, but had only dared hope for a fake one.
And the horrified glances the remaining designers (with the exception of Todd, of course) shared when Robb came walking in -- uncancelled -- was funny in a heart-rending way.
Robb & Todd ... okay, those two are getting really creepy together. You CANNOT keep me from watching next week's episode to see how far they take it!
Posted by Liz – August 6, 2007 4:39 PM
I think the right two went home last night. Even though I don't care for Robb...Organic Josh just let he and Todd take over. Hopefully, Robb will bomb next week in the individual room challenge and he will be gone.
My 13 year old daughter and I watch it together and we LOVE Sprarkle Josh!!!! He is hilarious. I wish they would give him more air time. I laughed out loud at the purse comment too....and the first show when he said the 3 pieces of luggage he was dragging in were just his hair care products!! He is from the other side of TN but I saw an interview with him on a local TV station just before the season started. He of course couldn't say anything about how long he lasts but he was just as funny in the live interview and said he got along with everyone there. Too cute. I love it that he not only owns who he is but celebrates it!
Posted by Kathy in TN – August 6, 2007 4:17 PM
Here is what the end result should be: Sparkle Josh and Will, with special guest star Scott. That would be the perfect Southern Design Stars with a Twist.
And someone above was right, David is getting annoying. The 'Color Splash' show is hard to watch. It seems now that it is just two of everything with one of David's signature paintings for everyone to ohhh and ahhh over.
Get new judges HGTV!!!!

I agree with most of what you said. I do, however, like Todd. I think he has some very good skill and may have some quirky style; time will tell. For me, Robb has to leave,... Quickly! He has no talent, is rude and obnoxious! Yes, he and Josh last week was a disaster in the works; neither has a clue. Put them together and you get what you got... crap! And Robb is so busy telling his teammates how much skill he has. Well, Robb, guess what? You don't!
I agree with you that Kim is going to have a very rough time going it on her own. She works well with others, but I think her skills are lacking. Similarly for Christina. I want to like her, but she is so overpowered by the other personalities and the fountain in the pantry was insane!
I don't like Adriana. I don't think she has good taste. The stuff she picked out in the first episode was gastly. Maybe she has carpentry skills, but they are nowhere even close to Todd's skills. I don't think she will last very long.
Sparkle Josh is awesome! I can actually see watching his show. He has so much personality and it seems he has good design style too. He has been on two winning teams in two weeks; the latter he did all by himself. He'll be here a while.
Will is also good. He has a quiet confidence about himself, but he too gets lost in the "noise" that is Todd and Robb. Once Robb is gone, and I'm hoping that's next week, Will will stand a better chance to hear his voice and his style. He will stay on I think.
Scott is a mystery. I do feel he is a professional, but there is so much drama, and he is so emotional. I think he has good design sense. He'll stay on, but he needs to demonstrate his talent.
Predictions: next week's loser will be Robb, Kim or Adriana
Posted by Gary – August 6, 2007 4:16 PM
The only good thing about the two kitchens was Josh's dining room. Otherwise they were both pretty disapointing if you ask me. Like David said "this show is supposed to inspire the viewer", nothing about those kithchens was very inspiring.
Can't wait to see the individual rooms next week. That will really show what they have to offer. Although I'd rather see them have a real store to shop at then the 99 cents store. But it may prove interesting.
I still think Scott, Josh and Will are the ones to watch.

I realy love this episode, at this tme you can realy see who is the next design star and is name is Sparkle Josh, definitly he is the only one who can make real diference in all place, remenber the bedroom with Will, how easy to acept diferent ideas and shopping with real ideas in mind and visual future project? realy, i need change my guess. Josh i will prayer for you all time and I will watching you show always.

Let's talk about the judges first. Vern should go! He has a huge head, is nasty and obnoxious. He is certainly not America's favorite designer in my book. I'd take Doug Wilson or Laurie Hickson Smith over him any day. This is not The Vern Yip Show and he should remember that. Martha is a smiling zombie. She seems to look to Vern before saying anything. Cynthia I think is a good impartial judge that gives both praise and constructive critcism. Cynthia Rocks!
It's obvious from all the comments I've read that the people at HGTV never read these and learn from them. The same comments were made last season. Also, I feel there should be a different set of judges for each episode. Why should these three decide who I get to vote for in the end?
Now for my take on things. I am one of the few that actually liked the Josh Team's kitchen excepting for the stupid fountain. Take away my pantry for a piddler? Not in this life. I like the cabinets but not the fake brick. I think they did a good job - not a great job. The Neeraja Team was screwed from the beginning because their team captain didn't know what she was doing. Considering the time constraint, we don't spend 22 hours out of 28 hours allowed, shopping for tile and then not even measuring to see how much she needed? What a dunce! They should have gone with granate look formica and tiled the backsplash with whatever the first store had that worked colourwise. Total lack of planning. Without Sparkle's dining room it would have been a total disaster.
As of today, I see Sparkle, Will and Adrianna competing near the end. Scott may have some good ideas but he needs to turn off the water works. Robb is cute but too arrogant as is Todd. Christina is the token airhead. Kim is too reticent, not assertive enough. I'd watch a show with Sparkle & Will easily with Adrianna as the next Amy Wynn Pastor. Now that would be a great trio. But alas, that will not happen and only one will win. My money is on Sparkle as of now. Next week may tell a different story.

Sparkle Josh was fun to watch and it is clear to see that he has presence on the show. I liked his choices for the dining space and applaud his money saving shopping skills but it clashed with the rest of the design space.
I was disappointed in Neerajah's design execution on both episodes and agree with the judges decision to cancel her show - she has no talents as a team leader and does not perform well under pressure.
Organic Josh - how can you call yourself environmentally friendly and not bring anything organic into your design? Tuscany is all about interacting with nature. Man, you didn't just miss the mark but I find it truly incredible that you admitted a Tuscan theme was out of your league! To the contrary - this was your opportunity to shine. Good riddance - I think you have learned a lot about yourself and will be a better designer for it in the future.
As far as the Tuscan kitchen - goodness gracious guys - a lot of natural touches, keeping the perfectly good kitchen cabinets and a very few, but well selected pieces of Tuscan influenced decor would have been so easy to do. Overdone and lacking the warm feel that a Tuscan style exudes!
The unfinished kitchen was a disgrace and I dare say that given ten thousand dollars, 28 hours and five people I could have done better!
Christina may or may not find her way - I think she has the talent and the drive - but will her aquiescent personality keep her from succeeding? I will be interested to see how she does on her own.
For that matter, I can't wait to see the dollar -budget decor episode just to see what sparkle Josh will come up with - if he aces that, then he has true creative talent and he has my vote for a possible design star.
I also like little Miss 'we're not going home' and am looking forward to see her in action on her own room designs.
One last note on this years show - it is a bit more provocative and shall we say sparkling than last year.
However, Vern's critiques have kept it real and on a professional plane.
My own critique - I liked the Tuscan water fountain, the designers could even have taken it one step further in that the fountain could be dispensing wine at the next party.
The large Tuscan kitchen dining set could have been great if it had been rescaled/reworked a bit.
On episode one - I fully agree - there is absolutely no reason why N. couldn't find the time to locate a few cool bar stools and I did not like her color choice of salmon/red.

BOTH Kitchens sucked in my opinion. Neeraja's was lousy and Josh's was lousy. They both should be re-done The dining room in Neeraja's was the best and I loved it that was the only good work done other than the construction by Adriana. Adriana did a good job in constructing the bar and center island for the kitchen.

I got more respect for Naraaja, as she was more gracious in loosing the competition, than anytime during the competition itself. I've seen some spark of humanity and sense of fairness throughout this last challenge...but, unfortunately, she still lacked planning skills and that sense of urgency to fulfill her task. Sorry, Naaraja.
Organic Josh, was a disappointment. Definitively he left no mark on this show, good or bad. Just a mediocre input, and personality.
Sparkle Josh: I'd be happy to see his show on HGTV. He's funny, versatile, and resourceful. Besides, I'm growing tired of home sale safe designs, cheap makeovers, or record time kitsch transformations.
Will and Scott: same as Josh, they seem to have what it takes to succeed. It will be an interesting show with the three of them left in the competition.
Adriana, she might be the last female designer to compete with the male trio. I see her enthusiasm, passion, and skills taking her there. She might not have the perfect personality, or the talent to be a Star design, but I think she stands a good chance to find a spot on TV, later on.
Christina: I would not like her as a host, period. She's not an engaging personality; she sounds precious and fake. As for her design: one day it's null, from "compromising", other day it's just overboard, and tacky... not to mention "unfunctional" (Sorry Lisa, your area must have lucked the Tuscan "appeal" :)
Robb and Todd, gosh, what a combination! Not less louder than KABUM man himself, and ridiculously proud of their role and accomplishments: a tacky kitchen, on a $10,000 budget! I've seen better kitchen jobs on Decorating Cents and, yes, they ARE allowed to crackle and faux paint all they want, with a $500 budget!
Kim, she's a darling...but still unheard/unseen in this competition. She might turn out to be a revelation, or the next one to go. We'll see.

Well, well, well.. I absouletly love the show. It's absoultly a mind blowing experiance to watch. I love Sparkling Josh, I feel he's about the only one in this show, with some true talent. Not to mention he's so easy to get along with everyone else. I feel he will get his own show by the end of the season. I love the show a lot thanks HGTV.

josh organic good riddance! He was so obviously a sexist, with his all male choices, only making an exception for one female who happened to be the giggle cutesy kiss up to males type. He even stated he had to pick one female. And Josh organic is a wimp, and NOT organic! He stated he was "sort of " or "kind of" green. He only used it as a hook, he isn't green for real.
Why do people like Christina? she is obviously a two faced kiss up. She totally dissed Adrianna the first challenge to try to make herself look good. Her slimy smile and saccharine voice are as phony as her design talent.
I love Scott, the cryer, he is so sweet! He is caring and sensitive about designing to make a good home for the client. That is important.
Robb is arrogant, abrasive, a braggart, annoying, volatile and a no-talent.
I'm glad neeraja is gone.. she is not a designer, but a stylist. She overestimated herself and her skills.
Josh sparkle is so much fun and so talented!
I like Adrianna.. she is talented, a very hard worker, what do you mean arrogant!!!! Yes, she stood up for herself to Christine's fake weak act so Christine plays the passive victim and doesn't take responsibility, yes she said she did all the carpentry work on this last challnge, BUT SHE DID DO ALL THAT WORK HERSELF!!The other team had three carpenters, she was the lone carpenter for her team! She SHOULD be proud of herself!!!
Will is great, we all know this!
I'm looking forward to seeing what Kim does on her own, lets see what she really can do.
Half pipe guy, what's his name, as arrogant as robb, ick! but has some talent, not so much for design, but carpentry skills.
Okay, who's left?
Posted by Frana – August 6, 2007 12:56 PM
I was sort of happy with the ppl gone this week, but ROBB HAS TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!! To me in this episode both team's kitchen wasnt at all good! For the Tuscany one, as soon as they left I would have gotten my kitchen makeovered again! ANd TEam Neeraja's kitchen, if it wasnt for the awesoume dining room, I would have gone ballistic on what they did to my kitchen!!!
Neeraja: HAD to go. She didnt even finish her work on the tiles! ANd she doesnt take responsibility for her actions, and Lets not forget her snobbish personality! ANd above all, she had no design taste whatsoever! REmember the white groute on black tiles? Im Glad she's gone!!!!
Kim: Kim seems like a great person. SHe's nice, able to work with a team and has a good personality. But we havent seen much of HER designs so far so I bet we're all looking forward to see what she can do in the next challenge.
Scott: I liked the way he still wanted to help out his team even though he had a back injury. And even though he was a little bit to teary he warned us about being emotional. He has great taste in his designs.
Sparkle Josh: Needless to say, He is a STAR already! What he did to that dining room, saved the whole project from disaster! HE ROCKS!!!! Why dont they just give him and Will a show together? I know most people would watch it!
Adriana: She may be bossy but I like the fact that she proves that women can do carpenting and all those kind of stuff too. If she got her own show I would watch it.
TEAM ORGANIC JOSH:
Josh: HIs design wasnt great but hey cut him some slack. He had two snobbish, arrogant, bullies on his team who forgot that he was a leader and established a "democracy" where everything had to go their way!!!!! But he seriously had to stand up for himself and if had another shot, he should have put his foot down and established control!!
Christina: We havent seen her design style that much yet, and the fountain should NOT have been there, but she's so nice and sweet that u can't hate her. But if she doesnt stand up for herself, she'll go the same way as GReen Josh.
Will: I like Will. ANd I will definitely say this mans got some talent. HE WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT SPOKE REASON IN TEAM GREEN JOSH. I mean he kept on telling them that the fountain was a bad idea but nooo... no one listened!!!!!! If he's the next design star, I would definitely watch his show!
Todd: He and the other bully need to be booted off immediatly!!!!! I mean, he totally took over Green Josh and look at his FAux Tuscany!!!! IT HORRIBLE! He has no great taste and is not David no matter how hard he tries! he needs to grow up and flatten his ego before the judges do when they cancel his show!!!(WHich I hope happens soon!)
Robb: Saved the worst for last!!! RObb is the most SELF CENTERED EGO MANIAC that ever walked TV that I for one have seen. All he does is whine and sell himself as a great designer when he cant design a thing! HE HAS TO GO!!!!!!! No one likes him and no one ever will if he keeps this up! And his cabenits wore horrible!!! I actually liked the way they looked before compared to the after!! HE wasnt the leader and he and Todd r the only ones who like each other!!!! He should have been kicked off instead of Green Josh!
If he doesnt go, I bet half the people who watch design star r gonna stop watching it! I know I would never give that arrogant toerag of a monkey a show!!!!
Im cheering for Scott, SParkle Josh and Will!
I cant watch wait for the next episode and I hope Robb and TOdd FINALLY LEAVE!!!!!!!

I never watched the first season of Design Star, and am now sorry to have missed it. I can't compare this season to last, but can compare it to other reality shows. This one ranks pretty high, although to me not quite the best.
The consensus of many seems to be that Sparkle Josh (now "just Josh") so far shows the most potential to be the Design Star and have his own show, both for his design skills and his personality/charisma. And there are no arguments here... I'm looking forward to seeing him each week.
I'm really wondering about some of the people's individual skills, because they haven't shown much yet. These include Christina and Kim, and also Todd. So, next week's show should be very interesting.
So far I like Josh and Will the best. I would include Kim on the list, but don't have any sense of her personal style yet.

I agree with beth I don't have a problem with his sexuality Did any hear his comment when he his was picked for Neerajas team & he grabbed the paint can & said "should I bring my purse?" I hadn't had a good laugh like that for days. They are also looking for a great show stopper personality like him. Oh, by the way don't tell anyone but he does own a few tigers as pets. LOL

I can't believe they didn't get rid of Robb this week (or Todd). I guess the only thing that kept them on was their actual skills, because they sure didn't show much in the way of teamwork. I thought organic Josh was steamrollered. I'm not sure there was much he could have done--did you see how Robb had a tantrum when Josh tried to calm him down in the car? He was like a two-year-old, and you can't argue with two-year-olds. I'm not sure anyone could have dominated the two overgrown children, but Josh had to try to work with both Robb and Todd, who was the second steamroller. He probably would have made the cut had he not been the team leader. I would have liked to have seen what he could do individually. Todd was annoying in the first episode; I didn't agree with the judges that a skateboard ramp was a good thing--he could have come up with an activity ALL of them could do on their off-time. He's like a 19-year-old kid, which is excusable in a 19-year-old, but not in a 30-something. Grow up, please! And Robb is the most obnoxious person I have ever seen on TV. Now that I've gotten that out of my system...I agree that Sparkle Josh has far exceeded expectations after watching his audition video. He really does a good job and is so likeable. I also like Scott and Will. Christina's audition video was just gaggy, so she had nowhere to go but up. But that fountain idea was unreal! When she suggested it I couldn't believe it--and I couldn't believe her team actually took her up on it. Will WAS the voice of reason in his comments about did a family of four need a fountain in the kitchen? I was interested to see how much the family seemed to like the whole thing, so I guess the team met their expectations. Neeraja probably should have gone, I agree, but not because of her personality. I thought she actually did a good job on keeping calm and not panicking. But not measuring for tile was an amazing mistake to make, especially coming up short on tile twice. And black tile is so impractical. They had all these lovely choices, and I'm not sure why they seemed to think that the home store's choices were like settling for something inferior. Neeraja had two incomplete projects in a row, so I'm not surprised she was eliminated. I am looking forward to the next show--please get rid of Robb; he is an embarrassment!

I think Josh Johnson should be Design Star!
He has talent like David Bromstad.
Posted by Sarah Strehl – August 6, 2007 11:48 AM
I'm shocked at Josh's show being canceled Robb should have gone!he brought in a car door and completely destroyed the meaning of tuscany by making everything look fake!however I liked your choice about making Neeraja go she acted like the boss and was not repeat not a team player. She didn't even finish the poor clients countertop!Josh was a team player and canceling his show was big mistake!I was screaming at the top of my lungs to my very unsympathetic friend Mr.Pillow!
Posted by layla – August 6, 2007 11:37 AM
I anjoy watcing last year's show so much better as it seemed to have more raw talent. However, this year is a bit hard to say that. Josh and Will seem to have far more talent and good communication than any of the rest. They both have my vote. Best of luck to both of you.
On the other hand I do not understand why Robb is still on the show. Is it for showmanship? Bad idea! He has absolutely no skills in any area of design. Poor communication, no creativity and no team effort. I can tell you from personal experience as client of his, I would NEVER work with him again.
Posted by orlandofriend – August 6, 2007 11:28 AM
I'M mad! Neeraja was a good choice but not JOSH. ROBB should have been canceled. He's so annoying I don't know how he got on the show in the first place-- except for DRAMA as earlier poster said. I don't believe he has any talent. He hung a door on a wall and painted some cabinets. BIG DEAL. At least Organic Josh was a team player and had some kind of vision. DESIGN STAR we are not happy about this! ROBB must go next!

Christina is one of my favorites. BUT: Please don't compare Christina with Alice. Alice has a degree in design. Christina does not. I looked at Christina's favorite styles. European was number 1. That concerns me with some of the suggestions she made and what is accepted by default as design of the room.
Posted by Teresa R – August 6, 2007 11:20 AM
Well, it's unanimous; everyone agrees that Sparkle Josh truly shined thoroughout both of these last two competitions, and I too agree, he SAVED Neeraja's (who I referred to as "Neurotica") team in this past challenge. Thank God the owners got to walk through his well-designed room first so that they got the big picture from the prettiest spot. I also agree with what blogger Reesa said; I bet the countertop that Adriana built was intended to be covered with tile as well, but I'm actually glad they didn't attempt it. Even if they had enough supplies (inexcusable), making the rounded cuts for the tile could have proved disastrous. I agree with several other comments that the whole thing could have been finished faster, cheaper and with an overall more functional result had they gone with solid pieces of granite or even slate to add dimension and interest. I HATED the Tuscan kitchen, the whole thing was horrible and poor Will, he was the only one to say "this is a family of four, you wanna take away storage?", and he was completely shot down. That fountain was tacky as was it's matching lion's head stone sculpture - NO,not kid friendly at all, and did they only refinish the top cabinets and leave the bottom cabinets in their original state? The worse thing is that they thought they finished their room adn rocked it! That's not teamwork. Furthermore, Rob, Todd and Organic Josh shopping together with that "majority rules" crap just made me angry. The only thing I've heard Christina say that I agree with is that they should have laid out the design so that she and Will could have gotten started on SOMETHING while they were off high-fiving each other; Todd and Rob that is. O-Josh was just a deer caught in the headlights, I can't say I'm sorry he's gone, bad taste and he's lazy. I'm really surprised he didn't get reamed for that "carpentry" mishap in the last episode; if that skate ramp hadn't been there, not only might that large piece of plywood taken someone's head off, as someone else had noted, but maybe flown through one of those windows, can you imagine? That thing shot off with FORCE and the judges said nothing of this, probably avoiding potential lawsuits. I, too, am sitting on the edge of my seat awaiting the next episode; can't wait to see what they can do individually. I know that Will, Scott and, of course, S-Josh will get a real chance to shine, maybe Christina too, she better, not impressed so far. Kim I hold high-hopes for, they chose her to begin with because she's a dreamer, and I pray she can make her ideas come to life. Adrianna's safe, though her attitude needs a little softening, not very approachable. And frankly, I'm worried about this new Todd-Rob union - two egos like that, coming together? Bad news. It's too bad because I liked Todd in the beginning. His can-do attitude with execution made him a Design Star candidate in my book, but he really disappointed me this last week. As for Rob, he's a finger-pointer with bad taste...did anyone see David Bromstad's video blog after the first show? I agree with what he said - those colors chosen for their "lounge" were the worst; the word putrid comes to mind, and yet, he was able to blame the whole thing on O-Josh's misrepresentation of his carpentry skills; he was right - but still, step up and fix it, not make it worse! You couldn't find any other pillows? I'm with everyone else one the fact that he probably won't make it through the next round - I predict he'll thow a temper tantrum when he can't get it done the way he wants and then he'll have noone to blame, and his show will finally be cancelled. Until next week!!!
Posted by dsjunkie – August 6, 2007 11:20 AM
Scott's emotional status last night and even a little last week doesn't bother me. He does care about the design/execution of the design that he is associated with. He kept on asking questions. "I have no idea how this is going to get done". He was concerned all along about time management of his team. If you have ever had back problems (as I have), you know where some of his crying/feeling sad came from. He appreciated being able to stay in the game and the acceptance by the other contestants on his team.

It was so time for the "expert" Neereja" to go! So thanks to the judges, especially Vern, for cancelling her show! After watching Vern a long time on Trading Spaces I know that he is very concerned about the quality of work that he gives to the people he is working for. He always accomplished the task of improving the living spaces for the people he was working with--thanks for bringing that to the judging pool! I am looking forward to seeing what these people can do on their own! I think it will give us a glimpse of who will last to the end!
Posted by DPOWELL – August 6, 2007 10:23 AM
Good riddance to Neeraja! I think she should have been gone in the first episode. Her bar area was a complete failure and I blame her completely for the unfinished kitchen in this competition. Facts are that even unfinished, it was more successful than the 'tuscan' nightmare.
I would have liked to see Josh stay over Robb. Robb is abrasive and has dubious taste. I feel bad for anybody who has to be on a team with him.
Posted by Cheryl G – August 6, 2007 10:06 AM
Okay, I’ll start with the two who SHOULD have been kicked off:
Neeraja: - Yippee! She’s gone! Apparently, all she knew how to do was lament over buying JUST the RIGHT thing – to the point that she ended up with nothing or not finishing the job! Horrible!
Robb – Crackle … or SPACKLE?! What in the WORLD did he do to those cabinets?! They were HIDEOUS!! Nice white paint on the bottom and then hideous and horrible WAAAAAY over crackling on the top?! That may have been the worst looking thing I’ve seen on Design Star so far (well, maybe it ties with Vanessa’s ridiculous collage last year. Ugh!) HEY! NOW I know who TODD AND ROBB, resident Design Star bullies, remind me of – SKUT FARKAS and GROVER DILL from A Christmas Story! (So which one’s Skut and which one’s Grover?!) Someone should have stopped them from ruining that family’s kitchen – tacky!
Organic Josh – Too bad he couldn’t step up to the plate and not let Skut and Grover, er, Todd and Robb, push him into that ridiculous fake Tuscan thing. Guess we’ll never get a chance to see if he had talent or not.
Kim – Seems like she’s got some talent and reason, but she desperately needs this individual challenge coming up. I’m looking forward to seeing how good she is.
Adriana – Same with Adriana. She seems like she’s got some good carpenter skills, although I do think that thing she made last night was awful – was it the bar? Didn’t look good.
Todd – (“So help me God, yellow eyes!”) Well, Todd, you may have some talent, but you’ll never be voted Design Star – no one wants to watch a show starring a bullying jerk. But don’t worry, no one would watch Skut Farkas’s show either.
Scott – Lots of people seem to have a problem with all the crying tonight, Scott, but you actually endeared yourself to me with how emotional you got over how kind people on your team were being. I’ll say this for Neeraja, it was great that she made sure her team watched out for Scott while they were carrying the heavy stuff. He looks like he’s got some talent, but we’ll find out on the individual challenge.
Christina – She DESPERATELY needs the individual challenge, ‘cause the only thing she’s done so far is that hideous fountain!
Will – Now this guy looks like he’s got some real talent mixed with a good feel for what the client wants and needs. Wasn’t he the only one who tried to stop the hideous fountain from robbing a family of four of a much-needed pantry? Okay, maybe the family SAID they liked the fountain, BUT think about this – if YOU were getting a FREE kitchen makeover, how comfortable would you feel saying you hate it? I’m betting they took a sander to those hideously crackled cabinets and a chain saw to that fountain!
Sparkle Josh – CLEARLY the winner of this challenge! He’s got some real talent for design! His dining room was BEAUTIFUL! Tasteful, elegant, and modern but classic. Wonderful job. It may be too soon to predict, but my guess is that Will and Sparkle J will be our two finalists! Again, great job, guys!

Vern is just HGTVs attempt at Simon on American Idol. I don't like that show, so I agree that he shouldn't be there. Sparkle Josh is pleasant and talented, but didn't he win last year and have his own show...I was a big David fan, but I can't even watch Color Splash anymore, it's a little too "festive". Aside from that, I can't see a clear cut favorite. Todd would make a good carpenter on another show, but couldn't host his own, however, I am interested to see if they have an outdoor challenge where he could shine individually.
Posted by Mike – August 6, 2007 9:45 AM
Okay, I really had to cut Neeraja some slack after last night's episode. I did not like her the first episode, but I think she did show integrity as team leader Sunday night. Now, yes, the tile project was a fiasco, but I don't think we can put the blame entirely on Neeraja -- HELLO -- someone on the team could have been measuring or offering up the possibility of ordering a "little extra" tile. The team leader can't do everything and I think Neeraja tried to because no one was stepping up. Neeraja took responsibility even though the team quietly let her down. She showed good, solid character and she earned my respect as a designer.
Yes, what about that fountain? I think the housewife was probably daydreaming before the competition even started and thought, "gee, I think I'll put a fountain in one of my designs" and for lack of any other idea, she stuffed the daydream into the kitchen closet without giving thought to the client's needs. Enough said.
I don't think Adriana is egotistical. I think she loves being an American and is giving it all she's got -- going for the dream. You go girl!
Organic Josh was a little "green" (young in attitude) for this competition. I think the judges made the right decision but I also think anyone would have had a hard time managing Todd and Robb. Robb should have been booted too instead of Neeraja -- because he should have been keeping a low profile but still came across as obnoxious and hard to work with. What was his contribution to the faux kitchen? The faux faux cabinets??
Josh Johnson does have a good eye for what works and what doesn't work in a room and he is quick on his feet. Maybe I'll start cheering for him because I live in Tennessee, but I don't know -- I'm still watching the personalities unfold and don't have that clear favorite.
Oh, one final thought, is Vern trying to audition for Simon Cowell's job??

You know it's funny, as I read through the posts that so may of us agree on so may points. However, don't be too harsh on Scott's emotional ventings. He said in his original interview that he takes design seriously and gets emotional about it. I can also feel his pain (literally)concerning his back. Having suffered years of back pain myself, if your willing to have someone stick a 5 inch needle in your muscle and still go on with the show, a few tears are understandable.
Josh; now that we can drop the Sparkle, is the one to beat. I don't have a problem with his sexuality and I don't believe anyone else should. A good designer is a good designer. He reminds me a good bit of David in that he seems to love what he does, has a sense of humor about it and relates his ideas to us in a palatable way. I see this quality in only two designers so far and I want to see them both at the end. Go for it Scott and Josh.

The word TACKY, TACKY, TACKY comes to mind when I think of the Tuscan kitchen. Over the top faux (fake) was a waste of a good 10k. On the other hand the waste in kitchen two was not in the money but the effort. Neeraja didn't seem to like the work part of anything and if she had done some measurements she wouldn't have run out of tile; twice. Come-on what happened to the basics? Can anyone see that I'm doing the Neeraja is gone dance? It could have been sweeter if it had been the Neeraja and Robb are gone dance! Man, is that guy a creep or what?
I think the testosterone levels on the faux kitchen team was making everyone ill. Confession: I was getting annoyed and was flipping channels to get away from it. Todd and Robb need to get a room. I absolutely loved the reaction when Robb walked into the room after elimination. Hysterical to say the least. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he is gone next week and we can get on with design.
The only comment I agreed with all night from Robb (I believe) was that Organic Josh was just lucky enough to stand in front of the can with money. He has no leadership skills and didn't even put up a fight when Todd took over. Josh needed to go. Todd on the other hand showed his colors when he steamrolled Will's ideas and they actually took Christina's (waste of space) fountain idea. This week had so many twists that we can go on forever.
I'm looking forward to next weeks show. I think that we will finally be able to see if some of these people have talent or not. I wish this had come earlier so I could have gotten a better feel for the individual instead of the team aspect. Since the show will be an individual show and not a group show, there is no real relevance to the demand to work together or collaborate on a design with other designers and for that matter design on a time clock.
One last comment on this post is that I totally agree with all who said that there needs to be guest judges. Vern is getting annoying and I would love to see comments from carpenters and other designer styles. Who voted Vern as America's Favorite Designer? No body asked me.

ROBB SHOULD HAVE BEEN VOTED OFF SUNDAY AUGUST 5TH
HE'S SO RUDE AND HE SITS ON HIS TASTE. I WOULDN'T LET HIM DECORATE A OUTHOUSE IF I HAD ONE.

Last year you had some good competitors. I love David Bromstad's show and think Alice would have done equally well. What happened this time...only dorks applied ? Whatever were the producers thinking ? If it continues like this I can't watch much more. The only ones who have shown any talent so far are Will and Sparkle Josh and he needs a personal make-over. Please not so in your face with his apparent feminity. He looks like he should be taming tigers on the Vegas strip. Kim seems nice. I think she might make a good hairdresser. Christiana is so sweet she is syrupy but I haven't seen any leadership or sensible design there yet. A fountain instead of a pantry in a kitchen. Give me a break! Does this woman store food for her family or would she be letting her toddlers splash in the fountain?
It is a shame you couldn't vote off more than 2 tonight. I'd have gotten rid of the bully who brags all the time and does Faux Tuscany as well as the shirtless skateboarder ! Thank goodness the rest of those you cancelled are gone.

On the first show I wasn't sure about Josh Sparkle, he's a bit over the top, but on the second show I could see the Sparkle, he was all business, quick thinking, good judgement and showed a lot of Design Star potential. His sweetness becomes him. I also was impressed with Adrianna's hands on carpentry skills, no talk, all work, good girl! Unlike Neeraja who was all talk and no work. Like the saying goes, "put up or shut up." As a mother of five and grandmother of seven, the ability to get along with others is still my strongest value. I don't feel Scott will last much longer if he doesn't stop crying. All and all, I love the show!!! I wait all week for the next episode.

I wonder why the other members of Nerraja's team didn't veto the bad tile choice or Adriana's ugly and structurally unsafe island design. Both were very poor choices especially for a family with children. The same goes for Green Josh's team. It would seem to me that teams of 5 designers would be able to come up with much better designs than these two teams did. A great room must start with a great design!

I think the right people were OFFed tonight, Josh just let them take over, he had no sense of leadership and Neeraja wanted to seem as though she could really be the "Leader" AND handle the budget, but it was clear that she cannot do 2 things at one time if she wasn't able to estimate the time it would take to do the tile, or how much tile was needed....."HELLO" what happened to taking measurements and bringing back the right amount of materials

My impressions so far ...
Neeraja ... bye-bye ... don't let the door hit ya in the butt on yer way outta there!
Organic Josh ... sorry ... not impressive in any way, but probably not the WORST ... slouchy demeanor and messy appearance didn't help.
Robb ... forget it ... he's the next one gone ... hasn't shown either talent or charisma.
Todd ... geez ... good-looking and probably talented ... BUT ... wayyy too self-centered ... I'm not too impressed.
Christina ... I'm thinking "Shades of Donna" from last season ... not seeing any talent, but dang, she's just too NICE not to like! Don't see any star-quality from her, at least not yet.
Adrianna ... kinda abrasive ... maybe talented ... jury's still out on her.
Kim ... SHOW me what you can do!!! I love her willingness to work with a team, she's got personality to spare ... can't wait to see her step up from the crowd. She might be the one to watch!
Will ... seems so level-headed ... bet he shines on the individual challenge ... so far, he hasn't been given the credit he deserves.
Scott ... I love what I've seen so far ... being emotional isn't a fault! Great design, good work-ethic ... star quality! Can't wait to see more!
Sparkle Josh ... OHHHH yeah ... creativity ... excellent design sense ... charisma, personality ... so far he's the standout!
Just a footnote for Lisa ... I wish she'd been given more of a chance ... I admit, her design in the last episode was, um, underwhelming, but I LOVED her personality and magnetism! I think it was a mistake to let her go so soon.
Looking forward to next week!

I want to echo the comments about Vern. He is so mean spirited and hateful in his remarks and who says he's one of America's favorite designers (probably himself). I do think he's a good designer, but very tactless in his remarks. Maybe he just needs to go back to Trading Spaces he was likeable on there. I mean look at the girl who ended up asking for a break during her audition. I mean she was nervous and probably felt like she wanted to stick to her presentation, but Vern kept interupting her until I'm sure she felt like maybe she didn't have anything to offer. I wish we could have seen her presentation. She may have pulled it all together, but we will never know thanks to Vern. What if he had done the 11 finalists the same way? I know some who would have probably buckled. He's so egotistical! Kind of reminds me of Robb. Probably why Robb is still on. Go Cynthia- she can critique without being hateful and snobish.

The execution and some of the design (?) of the challenge by both teams tonight was not very good. Each made unfortunate mistakes. Kitchens make-overs are really hard and make for great drama. I sure hope HGTV redid the Tuscan kitchen. It was HORRIBLE! The owners truly looked pleased but wasn't that for the tv?
I felt that Organic Josh and Neeraja needed to go.
Rob, Todd need to go ASAP
I like Christina but I am afraid she does not have the spine to host a show. She is going to have to step it up. Sparkle Josh and Will are great! I still like Scott. He has a good designing sense and will shine next week.
Posted by Teresa R – August 6, 2007 2:36 AM
I certainly agree with the Neeraja outing. Her design skill has been questionable in my mind since I saw the selection show. As a graphic designer--I really don't know what credibility a photo stylist has with INTERIOR design. God knows, even graphic designers wouldn't pair black tile with white grout. That alone justified her exit...
As for the second choice. A young organic Josh needed to show his stuff. I think he has some talent that he was too timid to show. Robb likely should have gotten the boot. He has a great deal of personal self respect--something that doesn't bode well with a team effort... nor will it go over with a real world client that doesn't agree with his design recommendations. I will say that I have to give him some credit that he stands up for himself and isn't afraid to do so... Josh needed to do the same.

Robb and Todd remind me of two adolescent boys. I saw nothing from either of them that vaguely resembled "leadership." They are school yard bullies grown up, and I hope they are eliminated soon.
Posted by Elaine – August 6, 2007 2:16 AM
One of the above comments made me re-think the whole design star thing -- I disagree that last year's designers were better than this year's designers -- in fact, if you think about it:
The whacky vacuum cleaner woman from last time is Lisa, Neeraja is Donna, Christina is Alice (at the beginning) Sparkle Josh is Alice (at the end), Adriana is Temple, Organic Josh is the guy who came in third (can't remember his name) and so on and so on -- HGTV can start writing for their new show "SPARKLE with Josh J." or maybe change the recipe a bit and put Will and Sparkle Josh together -- either way -- Those are shows I would watch (and tape)! PS. I like Scott too and did anyone notice on the first show how he made that "swimming pool" area into dining area WITH a DINING BOARD (like a diving board) -- BRILLIANT!
Posted by S. B. Long – August 6, 2007 2:14 AM
I think you're right on the money about Will. Honestly, I never expected him to be the voice of reason on the show and he's totally impressed me both challenges so far. It's a shame that the competitors can respect Scott's injury, but not Will's opinion. Yes, they're all trying to beat each other, but seriously, people, you're on national television with your own show on the line. Grow up a little and act like professionals.
Speaking of which, Robb? I felt bad for everyone -else- when he showed up again. Think maybe he'll learn this time after having his butt on the line? Nah. But I bet Kim will.
But by far, Sparkle Josh has knocked my socks off like no one else. I never, ever, EVER would have picked him after the "making the cut" episode, but now he's my top pick. And what gets me ever more is... he's succeeding OUT of his comfort zone ALREADY. No one else has been able to design beyond their own styles and tastes yet. I can't imagine what his HGTV show would be like, but I already know this... I'd watch every single episode.

I agree with some of the comments-Josh Sparkle is the standout for now. I loved his room last week and the dining room and mirror this week. I'd like to see what Will can do and Kim as well.
Crying Scott can go at any time. I can't stand the crying and I didn't care for him before all the crying. I am scheduled for back surgery and have several herniated discs and I haven't cried half as much.
Christina can go home. Seems a bit outclassed. And the fountain in the kitchen-I would have thought she of all people would have understood storage needs versus a fountain. There were better ways to induce style in the kitchen.
Vern's comments were right on target. And I thought the tacky flowers and crackled cabinets looked odd. The cabinets seemed way too light for the rest of the room.
I can't wait for next week! Decorating the individual rooms will separate the men from the boys. Who can forget David's (first season) knockout room made from the pet store!
Posted by Sue – August 6, 2007 1:57 AM
The judges should actually walk the designed rooms. To make a judgment of a 3D design using a 2D TV screen doesn't result in providing the perspective of the client. As the episodes progress, hopefully the judges will do a live evaluation----as they did with the first season that David won.

Tonights show was enlightening, however Robb should have been the one to go, but he will be gone before the end of the competention. Kim and Todd will be the next two to go..Don't be surprise if Will and Adriana end up being the last two on the show.
Posted by GEEG – August 6, 2007 1:41 AM
OMG -- When I first saw the promos for the show I thought that they had inadvertently shown us the last two designers left in the competition (I think they probably purposely did that sneaky thing) ROBB and Organic JOSH...however, as we found out tonight -- that was just the end of the second challenge. Thank goodness. There was no way that I could believe that these two would still be in it anywhere near the end of the competition. In fact, now that Josh is gone Robb or Todd are closer to being out the door. The next challenge -- individual rooms -- will show that those two have no real DESIGN skills. From the beginning, when they were choosing competitors, I thought Sparkle Josh and Will were going to be stars -- I was really surprised that Will was like an afterthought!!!! Anyway, I think the indiviudal room challenge will give KIM and Christina a chance to really shine. Kim is very talented and we haven't really gotten a chance to see what Christina can do. So, I predict that TODD and ROBB will be called to the carpet at the end of the next show. I further predict that Sparkle Josh and Will will be the ones to beat in this competition ------ WILL, you have got to steer clear of that no talent bag of hot stinky air (ROBB) and remember what you said at the beginning of the show -- YOU have talent and you do not NEED to put other people down to show your greatness...... AND SPARKLE JOSH, you saved team Neeraja from total ruin -- you are awesome! I love this show!
Posted by S. B. Long – August 6, 2007 1:38 AM
The faux Tuscan kitchen was a nightmare, especially the horrible crackled cabinets and the awful fountain. It reminded me of one of last season's "before" rooms--the bedroom with the castle mural. Oh, the horror.
I have to agree with the first three departures--they were the three weakest last week. Robb will be next unless he pulls off something brilliant on his own.
Sparkle Josh, Will, and Kim seem like nicest people in the competition. Sparkle Josh definitely has charisma.
Posted by Eleanor – August 6, 2007 1:29 AM
I agree with Carla's statement that each person should have been given the opportunity to showcase their individual work FIRST before being put into teams. But, then maybe that was the purpose of the audition process. I'm just left hanging when someone is eliminated before I've seen what their individual designs might have been.
I believe Sparkle Josh is making the greatest contribution to the projects he's a part of. He takes his area of responsibility and runs with it while staying within the budget, without sacrificing quality, adding much greater value to the overall design in the process.
Posted by Ilene – August 6, 2007 1:28 AM
The person I want to vote off is VERN! Despite the fact that Neeraja failed to provide effective leadership and Organic Josh allowed his team to steam roller him into some poor decisions, both teams did passable work. Both worked extremely hard; neither came up with STAR quality design. That said, Vern needs to learn how to critique the designers with substance instead of snottyness. Least we forget, designers are artists and we need not disrespect them in the process of reviewing their creations. While Simon is harsh on his singers, he is truthful. I can tolerate a tough judge just not a prissy one who is inarticulate at best. Producers, get Vern some writers and some prozac or perhaps you could trade him in?

I love HGTV. This is the first competition show that I have taken the time to watch and I am sitting on the edge of my seat for next weeks show! It must be as frustrating for the Judges. I do have to agree with another comment; just because the Judges taste do not like the project, Most people do not have the money or ideas for the dramatic inspiration that They might use in Their designs....You are working with MUCH MORE MONEY! MANY OF US HERE IN VEGAS are working hard for a living. Not everyone drives a rolls or lives in a mansion. The Owner's were happy and excited. Sad that one project was left unfinished; but, that problem is now solved. I look forward to seeing Kim and Scott show more of Their influence. Not too excited about some of the egos painting, bottom line is TEAM WORK! The true DESIGN STAR includes the Team for over all shine....not just Their glory. Something Every occupation needs to remember! YOU ARE ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR TEAM!
CAN NOT WAIT UNTIL NEXT WEEK.

i am so glad Granola Josh is gone. he was so annoying and wanna be 'green.' Todd and Robb have to go also. they are super arrogant and abrasive. what is with Todd always taking off his shirt? he acts like a wanna be X Games skater punk all the time. grow up, act professional. he is not that special and needs a good beat down. Robb is condescending maybe because he is bald and so tiny. i like will and sparkle josh.

OK, folks:
What about a design show with Sparkle Josh AND Will? The most fun I've had watching this season was the two of them designing the big bedroom. Laughter. Unexpected interaction. Good design. Can't you see it? The two of them tearing into middle America? Set the thing in the "fly over" states - not the coasts or Chicago, but the center of the U.S. What about Kanas City? Ft. Worth? St. Louis?
The Ebony and Ivory Design Show!!
And finally HDTV would have a truly FUN show to watch.

My thoughts on who I like hasn't changed much since the first episode. Scott, Sparkle Josh and Christina are still my favorites. I felt sorry for Scott because I know first hand how it feels to be involved in a project and then be down in your back where you can't do what you really want and need to do. It's very frustrating and upsetting and I wasn't in a competition like he was. I'm sure his crying was a mix of frustration, lack of sleep, pain (from his back), nerves (because he can't do what's is expected), etc. (Besides...I saw tears from several of them tonight!) I think he would be a great design star. Just take a look at his website to see he has a great TV presence (from shows he was on in Houston) and he know design (view his columns he regularly writes for a magazine). He has what it takes so don't judge him to harshly on his emotions. You can tell he is a guy who has a passion and love for design and has so much talent to offer HGTV viewers.
Sparkle Josh is also very talented. I love his personality, his style and his TV presence. He is always kind, does his work and doesn't complain. He has what it takes also and I'm sure he will be a finalist (at least I hope!) His website is great too and he has many talents! He has so much style and likeablity!
Christina is charming and has great TV presence. I would watch her show. I always love the idea of fountains BUT not in place of a pantry and NOT that fountain. I love the idea someone wrote about putting the fountain outside the kitchen sink window! That would have been great! In spite of the fountain...I still like Christina and I'm thinking she might shine next week when she's on her own like I think Sparkle Josh and Scott will also!
Robb and Todd have got to be two of the most obnoxious men I've ever seen! I agree with what most everyone else is saying! I sincerely hope they will be the next two to go!! I don't care how they do in the next competition....I can't stand hearing them or seeing them in action! I would never watch any show either one of them were in. They are both so self-focused that they are sickening! Did you see the look on everyone's face when Robb walked in the room? Everyone was just shocked and sick looking except for Todd! (Those two are 2 peas in a pod!) Todd is the only one who likes Robb!
Adriana is irritating to me. She doesn't seem like a very happy or easy going person. I don't think I could watch a show that she would star in. She didn't seem as bossy in this show but she also didn't seem too positive either.
I like Will and I loved him and Sparkle Josh in last week's episode but this week I was bothered by Will being so affected by Robb. I know it probably would have been very difficult to do but instead of arguing with Robb...Will should have just blown him off and not let that obnoxious behavior of Robb's get to him. Will seems too classy to get involved with that bickering. Will needs to go on and do his best and not let the behavior of Robb affect him so much! Hopefully Will won't have to put up with Robb after next week.
Neerja HAD to go! This was the second competition that she didn't finish! There's a pattern here. All these designers know that there are time restraints and they must plan that way! Last week it was not finding barstools and not finishing painting. This week is the same song...second verse...not finding tile (timely) and not finishing the tile work! She prided herself about being in charge but she didn't do a convincing job in last week's or this week's competition. She didn't have a good personality for TV either.
I felt bad for Organic Josh. I don't think he should have gone this week but I do think he would have probably gone next week or the next. He seems like a nice guy but he should have taken charge of this project. He was overwhelmed with the take over of Robb and Todd! I just don't see a polite bone in Robb or Todd's personality. I agree with someone else who said they are both so immature and self-centered. Those two are really painful to watch!
We'll see what happens next! My guess who will win next week's competition is a toss up between Sparkle Josh and Scott. I think they are the most talented two of all the designers and that they will really shine and show their talents and personality in this individual competition.
Posted by Cindy – August 6, 2007 12:46 AM
Sparkle Josh was the shining light in his group. The dining room decor he created is not exactly my style, but it was beautifully detailed ... he knows how to put a room together and entertained us the entire time! I'm liking this Josh.

I would like to be able to watch the episodes online like other shows on abc.com, nbc.com, cbs.com you can watch the FULL episodes online. I can not watch them on tv when they air. I have a weird work schedule. Please HGTV have them air online so I wont miss them. not everyone has Tivo! Thanks.

Not surprised that Neeraja is gone. In addition to the fact that her personality was....shall we say...as course as a horse hair door mat, she never finished either of her two projects.
My only disappointment was that Cry Baby Scott is still there. I-can't-stand-watching-a-grown-man-cry-over-nothing-and-over-everything! AGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!
Please, please, PLEASE dump that thin-skinned, blubbering, cry-baby!

Well, thank goodness we're through with the team assignments (I hope), I'm eagerly awaiting the individual challenges. I want to see what Will and Kim and (even Christina) can do. So far they've been great team members (except for the fountain! come on people!) I've seen Scott's work on line and it's beautiful..I love Kim's rock steady attitude; I think she'd do great as a host, but let's see some style, honey!
Posted by Andrea Lorton – August 6, 2007 12:11 AM
I have to say that I agreed with Vern on the responsiblility of a finished job. Neeraja grabbed the money last time and lucked up with it this round. The show was about making choices that could be completed in the time given and she can't manage time or money. I knew she wouldn't last long. Josh astonished me last week with the accident that could have taken off someone's head, Can anyone say "SAFETY FIRST" Mr. Carpenter? I think Robb has the ability to do some first class carpentry and it is great he can faux finish, but I'm not sure about design and his attitude stinks. I think many of them need to humble themselves a bit. Todd also has some issues with cockiness, but may prove to have some talent in design. I thought the idea of the fountain was great, but not at the expense of storage. I don't care who ya are, that is important. I just built a house to make sure I had enough space and I still could use more and I have a huge kitchen with a walk-in pantry. Kim she is lost in all the mess. She and Will are going to have to prove themselves with individual chalenges. Adriana is teetering; she can definitely do many things, but that island left my mouth open, ugh! Sparkle Josh I can't wait to see what he comes up with on his own, he has a lot of potential. I don't know what to think about Christina, she has ideas but it boils down to seeing what each person does individually and she would have to wow me. So far, I think the judges made the right decision with who they had on the chopping block. Kim and Robb better step up next week. I hated it for lisa, but what she did last week was repulsive. Thank goodness paint is inexpensive. I did'nt see last years show, but I love Color Splash. David Bromstad's show is wonderful. I am wondering why there are not more people with obvious design talent on this years show. Was there a drought at the tryouts? It seems like Ego is what gets you on the show.
Posted by Helen Johnson – August 6, 2007 12:05 AM
Hiya! I do not agree with the comments saying that this years designer arent as good as last year-do you remember Ramona, the twins, give me a break! BUT I do agree the women so far are very weak-Christina, Adriana, Lisa-have they shown us anything so far but a tacky and cliched fountain in yet another TUSCAN kitchen? (Have any of these people seen Tuscany??) Not many fake flowers there! Im up to here (chin) with Tuscan kitchens anyway!! Lets find a new motif please. Also I dont want to hear the words eclectic (indecisive), or pop anymore. Basta!! AGHHHHH! Scott- I love you but quit crying and design. Will-I love you too but assert yourself already. Josh (thank God we dont have to call you sparkle anymore) I love you Fabio-Keep on keepin on!
Posted by chris – August 6, 2007 12:02 AM
I cannot believe that the judges let "Organic Josh" go!! Robb is not a team player, all he does is complain about everyone else and he is the problem. As you can see from the expressions on everyone's face when Robb came in the green room, he is not very well liked!!! He needs to GO!!!!!!!!
Posted by Theresa – August 6, 2007 12:01 AM
I agree with Designer2be, except I disagree that Will is too practical. It is impossible for a designer to be too practical. Interior design combines function with style, and it's got to be within budget, also a practical matter. When I was young, I sacrificed function for style in my own spaces, but that definitely made life complicated sometimes! I believe function vs style is the biggest challenge a designer tackles.

I also thought the same as Lwatkins that Neraja's team should have bought 12X12 granite tiles for the counters. They would have taken less time to install and less grout and would have looked better than black tiles - UUGH - have you ever had to clean the grout between all of the tiles in your kitchen? - never again!
Neeraja had too go - she was scary. The only person I would watch for a whole show would be Sparkle Josh. He is much better that I guessed after his initial presentation during casting. He and Will designed a great bedroom. I also think that Will has a lot more talent than he was allowed to show tonight. He was the voice of reason against putting the fountain in a pantry. Rob needs to go next - I thought that the crackle cabinets were awful. He reminds me of the obnoxious (full of himself) sports DJ on Frasier. I'm axious to see what they all can do individually next week. Maybe some were chosen for their talent and not personality after all.

Am I the only one who thought Todd & Robb's treatment of the talented and delightful Will smacked of racism? I was horrified watching and listening to them. Also, let me say I am ashamed to admit I hail from the same part of the country as Robb, who is NOT representative of Floridians. Todd has been saved by his building skills, but building skills alone do not a designer make. I can't wait to see how he does in the individual challenge. Adriana may have skills, but so far her design taste has struck me as very suspect. Neeraja's ego far exceeded her skills. I too was appalled she refused to take responsibility for her total mess up on the tile project in her conversation with Kim the last day and before the judges. Green Josh should have been called invertebrate Josh. The faux Tuscan was appalling, and then there were those pillows he and Robb put on their seating the first week. At least it was a tacky Las Vegas family so they loved the over-the-topness of it all. I could not eat in a room where I had to look at that faux cabinet finish (strangely reminiscent of runny vomit). I love Scott, but Scotty, buck up. I didn't cry that much watching Franco Zefferelli's Romeo and Juliet!!!! Sparkle Josh, you little devil, you are the dark horse of the season. After all of the glam and sparkle talk, your taste is actually exquisite as exhibited so far. Kim has a great personality, but I don't think being a hairdresser can carry her through to the end on this show. She lacks too many basic skills. As for southern homemaker woman, I am waiting to see. My concern is that what I have seen of her design work seems too unimaginative and pedestrian. I look forward to her work being revealed in the individual challenge.

I love HGTV. The designer competition is wonderful.
Will, Scott and Sparkle Josh have impressed me the most.
Will has a level head, and personality. He knows what is talking about. Scott is The Man, he fights thru the pain. Sparkle Josh is Fabulous and good designer, who knew!
Todd and Robb need to be eliminated as soon as possible. Why are they still on the show? Did someone mention bully.
Kim, every hair stylist I know can decorate any space. Show me what you got girl!!
Adriana, wow a women with a power saw, but what else can she do!!
Christina is very nice. Stop comprising. Nice guys don't always finish last.

Glad to see Neeraja gone, to bad Robb is not gone too. He needs to go as well as Todd. Face it Todd you are not David. I am disappointed with the DesignSTar show this year. I would like to see one of the women win, but I have not made up my mind yet.
I really think you should have gotten other judges this year. All these judges think about is their own taste in design. There are other designs out there and when someone tries one if it sin't what the judges like the contestant is shot down. What do the judges think about say country?
I hope the DesignStar show improves.

I felt the judges where right on in their decisions this week. I felt the outing of Lisa was to soon. Neeraja should have gone last week. She was the tile expert???? I hope that Kim and Christina shine next week. I love Will, Scott and Sparkle Josh. Sparkle Josh can surely shop. Organic Josh did not have much of a backbone. Will is good but unfortunately he had to fight for any recognition. Someone said that Will and Sparkle Josh made a good team. They would play off each other well in a show together. They where the surprised of last week. It seemed on the preshow that some of the designers they showed where better than three of the designers they chose. To bad Alice wasn't in this years competition. She was good but David was so much stronger.

Great show - LOVE IT. After viewing styles and personalities. Josh is your design star. The rest don't have enough personality or style - they're followers - Josh IS a STAR - he sparkles. Judges should have let Attitude Robb go. He brings the show down a notch.
Posted by J-Austin – August 5, 2007 11:28 PM
I am so glad that Neeraja is out of there. She is an idiot that has no talent and wants everyone else to do all the work.
I love Vern! He is the only judge that speaks the truth. Keep telling it straight Vern.
Sparkle Josh is surprising me though. Last week and this week, he has turned out the best designs.
Kim should go though, she has no idea what she is doing and is relying on good designers to get her through.
And, the fountain in the kitchen--very stupid idea. Who wouldn't want an large walk in pantry instead.

I'm really enjoying what Sparkle is shown in design. I look forward to seeing what he will come up with in the weeks to come as I have a feeling this is going to be really good. I saw David as special early last year. I really enjoy this competition a lot it's so very entertaining and have always enjoyed Vern as a judge as he is spot right on as a very tasteful and experenced decorater. Been a fan of his a very long time.

I just love this show. Sparkle Josh is a standout so far. The Kitchen challange was so horrible to watch with the awful fountine i the kitchen. I ran away to get icecream. I like Scott and think he may have a trick up his sleave yet. Will is a sensible person and I would love to see his solo work. As for Scott, please! I know that he has a lot of emmotion and passion but is he an artist and can he swing a hammer? I want him to show off next week. So far the girls have fallen short. I want a design star at leas at good as David. I loved him and watch his re-runs over and over! I have 2,000 square feet that he can carve up when his TV run is over!

I am so glad black tile girl is gone, i could not stand looking her joan rivers-esque lifted eyes. I felt bad for Green Josh, he hurt himeself when he picked skater boi. Rob is so rude & needs to stop high fiving everyone! Gosh, I'm a beotch tonite. sorry. This season is not nearly as interesting as last. I hope we see Christina sail off soon, her fountain idea would scare my younger son.

Hi Superstar! Teamwork!!! Teamwork!!! Teamwork!!! Organic Josh's team nailed it! In this challenge only two stood out for me, Sparkle Josh (Design Style) and Adriana (Skills). Sparkle Josh has got the charm, the style and could pull off a design show with personality but only for shopping for style on a budget. What other skills does he have? Adriana hasn't been given the opportunity to shine. She has got it all and the longer she stays the more confidence she needs to get. She could win if she would take the challenge to heart. Remember, she was the only one with a floor plan in the making the cut. She wasn't in charge of tiling just building and she did a fantastic job.
As we saw with Neeraja holding the money and leadership were not her strong point in either challenge. She was too full of herself and I was glad to see her go. I could not watch even on episode of her if she was to get her own show.
Adriana could host a very good show and a appeal to a wide audience of DIY enthusiasts. It is always enspiring to see a woman do so many things. I hope she gets up more courage to overcome my perception of what appears to be is an inferiority complex to the other designers! She needs to bring out her style and show us what it is! She has the skils. HGTY needs a star who can lead others to DIY. That is what it is all about. If I were there I would be her cheerleading squad.
I am not as poetic a writer as some superfans but I can say that Neeraja never won me over. She came in boasting of her skills and style and went out in shame. She seemed to have no regrets, almost like she realized somewhere in the first competion (decorating -- Not Designing) that she was in over her head. She demonstrating no skills at all.
One thing I know as an HGTV addict is that designing is all about elements, project management, functionality, budget, style, cohesiveness, balance, etc. and Sparkle Josh seems to be the only one with it in his head! He should learn how to use tools to motivate DIY enthusiasts. Anyone can do demo. Anyone can shop if they have style and of course, money!
Team work and implementation are just as critical. Picking who will go home is tough because some people shine in different elements of the competition. Again, Sparkle Josh and Adrianna shine tonight.
Let's continue because it has to be said. Todd and Robb took the leadership in design and ownership, delivered on time, within budget and the customer loved it. True champions. The team didn't lose. If I had to pick either team to come into my house it would have been Organic Josh's team.
The elements of the TEAM NEERAJA that were a success again were ideas of Sparkle Josh and Adrianna. If you put these two together it would be an amazing show. The island was made of plywood but the bet would be that is was supposed to be tiled like the countertop and we all know who failed on that one, Neeraja! Go home Neeraja. Organic Josh trusted his team and that was his only failure. I am not sure why he went home.
Hands down unless I see miracles in designs next week my picks are Josh and Adrianna.

I enjoyed the truthfulness of the judges. However, their pick to send Josh home was probably not a good one. Josh was so out numbered with Todd and Rob, even if Josh had an idea he was already out numbered. Todd was such an A__HOLE, and Robb should have been gone doing the eliminating phase.
Watch Out!!! These guys are trouble.
I love Will, Sparkle Josh,Scott, and Adriana.
Will Smith is the most leveled headed member of the Design Star even if he does not win he can design anything for me. Smart Guy!
Sparkle Josh is the BOMB! I was on the fence with Josh, but he has proven to be a force to be wreckoned with. You go girl!
Who doesn't love Scott. What a man! What a man! What a mighty might good mand!!!! Love him. Thru the pain, he is still a teamplayer.
Adriana, a woman that can use power tools! She's great and an inspiration to all women that do not know how to use a power saw.
Christina could be the diamond in rough. I don't dislike her but she needs to STOP comprising. Nice guys finish last!!!
Kim, every hairdresser I know can decorate any space. Show me what you got, girl!!
Neeraja, sorry to see her go, but the despite the unfinished kitchen, probably a great designer. She'll be alright, tough lady.
My predication of the next Design Star is up in the air.

Personally, I thought that Neeraja and Rob should have left tonight. Neeraja because she did not complete the tile and was really stupid for not measuring to get enough (ugly as it was). And Rob has not shown me anything that I would ever even consider having in my house. (A car door on the wall, give me a break.) And his attitude stinks. I like Josh "Sparkle" and Will so far.
Posted by carolyn – August 5, 2007 11:00 PM
I can not believe they didn't eliminate Rob. I think Rob, Organic Josh and Neeraja. I think the producers are keeping Rob on for "TV DRAMA". My two favorites are " The Country Faith Hill and the Urban Queen Latifah" aka Sparkle Josh and Will. I think they could really have a show together and it would be a hit.

Moral of this episode? Team captains get canceled UNLESS they take control of their team, their time, and their budget.
While I agree with the judges' decisions (though not necessarily their comments), I can't wait to see Rob and Todd get canceled.
I can't wait to see each individual's talents showcased on the next show. I still have no idea what to think about either Kim or Christina. I love Sparkle Josh and Scott. Adriana always has a sour look on her face.

Truly enjoyed tonight's show, but not the kitchens. Those poor homeowners -- wonder what they said when the cameras were turned off and they took a close look at the quality of the workmanship that was left behind! I do enjoy the personalities (and the conflicts) -- I think that's what makes reality tv so much fun. So I wasn't surprised that Rude Robb has been kept around for another week to aggravate us all. Good grief, was that fountain the best idea Christina could come up with? It was 1. ugly and 2. useless.
Posted by lemonadene – August 5, 2007 10:52 PM
This year is not as good as last year. Too big a build up I think. And why don't they have them do a competetion by themselves first to see who really has talent and then go on to team challenges?
Robb should definitely have been eliminated. It's like they are keeping him for his drama element. Sparkle Josh is my favorite.

I have to admit this show is growing on me... and only after two episodes. The unfinished kitchen was by far and away the better of the two, design-wise. The other kitchen looked absolutely terrible, and anyone who voted for an indoor fountain instead of a pantry should be kicked off of ANY show on HGTV. Even the new table picked by Todd, Robb, and Josh looked worse than the old one. The only reason I can think why the family liked it was that they were wanted by the law, and needed to get the TV crew out of the house as quickly as possible. I agree that Will got screwed on that episode - he seems to be the most level-headed and design-savvy of that particular team. It will be interested if the Tony Hawk-wannabe will last much longer. His construction skills aside, he seems to have no design skills besides being able to build a skating ramp.

LOL, totally with you on the pantry conversion to fountain. I think it was hard to declare a winner on this one... although Sparkle Josh proved that you can never underestimate the power of good shopping skills! Not so sad that Neeraja and Organic Josh are gone... they were both kinda milquetoast anyway. Now, we're starting to see personalities emerge ... and some are personalities that I don't think I could stomach on a weekly basis. Can't wait til next week to see who shines.
Posted by rocksandhardplaces – August 5, 2007 10:48 PM
Robb Mariani should have been GONE!!! He's very arrogant, definitely NOT a team player. He'll be gone next week, I hope?
After next week, I'll let you know who I would like to see win.
Posted by Michelle – August 5, 2007 10:46 PM
I think Robb is an idiot! He has a big mouth, obnoxious, annoying and thinks that everyone else is beneath him. I'm surprised he's still on the show.
Neeraja and Josh were canceled because they weren't in control of their team. Unfortunately, Josh allowed the two big mouths to take charge. When anything bad happens, it's usually the leader that goes.

The right people went this time. Our first boot-ee had a darling personality, but these people have bugged me from the jump. Not only do they come across as abrasive and egotistical, they demonstrated themselves less than competent on several levels--twice now.
Robb and Todd also annoy me, but they both have real merit as designers and craftsmen. If either of them wins, which I doubt, I will not watch their show. Their attitudes make me want to throw produce at the TV.
I'm betting it'll come down to Sparkle Josh, Will, and Scott. They have the personalities *and* the good taste and creativity that the new show is going to need. I still haven't made up my mind who's my favorite, but Sparkle Josh got some Major Points with me tonight!

I love to see all the different aspects of what makes good design, and the comments of the judges. Liked the idea of the Tuscan kitchen...but not how they implemented it. Even I know its a big oh NO to use fake plants! Wasn't that "Green Josh"? Good riddance. I think they want the new Design Star to be Adriana (they need a someone to speak to the minority population and she does carpentry) but I don't like her primitive taste in paint choice (episode 1) and rustic wood counter (episode 2). Scott's too emotional to get thru an episode, and Christina has good taste and good looks if she can up her presence on TV as much as Sparkle Josh and Todd. I would cheer for Will but he is more practical than they need, but I could be wrong. I like him. All the others I would write off already. Do you think I am way off...? Speak your mind!

I thought the elimination segment was so funny
when Clive said you fauxed and crackeld the Ktichen to death..lol The Green Team did a terrible job and the other team had a decent
outcome. The show is not as good as it was last season I think the contestants last time were better.
Posted by Kitty – August 5, 2007 10:40 PM
It's obvious to me that the only reason they are keeping Robb is for "drama" and ratings. Maybe we'll get a Donna/Temple thing going with Robb and Will? Is that what the bean counters have in mind? They had to vote Neeraja off because she was such a terrible team leader and her design (black shiny tiles on a REAL family's kitchen counter top?? Can you say water spots?) was horrendous. This year's show and designers are so inferior to last year's. Very disappointed.

Yes. Let's talk about CRYING SCOTT! OR NOT! [I'm over explaining to my straight friends that he's just another overly emotional gay man on national TV.]
Josh "Sparkle" will proceed ... he's good, but might not win.
Robb just might make it to the end, but it would be good to see him define his TV persona.

Sparkle Josh is the next design star in my opinion. he has the personality and the the ability to work well as a team or on his own. His design style is on right on target., GO JOSH. They should have kept Organic Josh and got rid of Todd or Christina or Robb.

Vern needs to calm down. This episode does demonstrate that it does not pay to be selected the leader!!! I agree with nanabear that Robb and Todd are some of the most annoying people ever seen on Design Star (except possibly for Temple last year). Todd is clearly getting by on his looks. I couldn't believe he received praise for building a skateboard ramp in a dining area in a penthouse, where you could skateboard through a window right down to oblivion. Robb, well, should never have made it to an audition.

It's got to be frustrating to try to get your own ideas to shine thru & be individualistic when you're working with a team so yes it will be great to see them each design their own room. This way everyone can also take personal responsibility of the blunders made without the excuses & blaming their team member; They can showcase their own talent which will at least allow them the dignity of showing their style without having to Christina-compromise-o. Did you see everyones face when Robb came back in the room? I think they're all sick of him. The 2 left standing in the end...my opinion..Sparkle Josh & Scott. Poor Scott cries so much bless his heart. I'd want Sparkle Josh to win...he just goes & gets it done & has a sense of humor each week.
Posted by Sandy Tepper – August 5, 2007 10:32 PM
I agree with you. There is no way I would ever watch any show hosted by Robb. I am not impressed with any of the women designers this year. Where is Alice when you need her???
Will, Scott, and Sparkle Josh are my favorites,too.....so far.
Posted by Dianne – August 5, 2007 10:29 PM
I agree I think Scott, Will and Sparkle Josh were the definate standouts though I think Christina may surprise people once she gets the courage. Fun episode, I couldn't believe they took away a closet and put in a fountain, and REALLY was surprised when the family loved it, I guess storage was not an issue. Todd was less obnoxious in this episode, I actually respected his leadership qualities this time. Will Robb make it another week??
Posted by Becca G – August 5, 2007 10:26 PM
Vern comments are so inane , HE is the one who makes you nauseous. The only thing he could do was to comment on how "irresponsible" it was that one team left the tile and hardware undone. As some one who has done a lot of remodeling both by myself and hiring others, this was the most ridiculous comment and basically ruined the show for my wife and me. When is a kitchen remodel EVER timed?????????!!!!!!!!! How ubsurd! DO workers set a timer and then just walk away? Give me a break. What a let down this show was.

I just sent a email to Design Star and said that I felt that HGTV is not about BLING ANYMORE BUT they need to get with it-regarding sustainability and conservation of our natural resources. I thought Josh Organic should have remained until at least the 3rd episode where he would show off his individual design talent.
So I told HGTV that this landscape architect many year watcher of HGTV-"HGTV YOUR SHOW HAS BEEN CANCELLED AT MY HOME".
Posted by Marilyn Parker – August 5, 2007 10:20 PM
I cannot believe they chose Robb over Josh, Robb AND Todd are 2 of the MOST annoying people Ive ever seen on any Design Star challange.... ever! I do though think that Josh should have stayed back at the house and done some demo work instead of going shopping. I also think Nerraja was to picky about the thing she wanted to do.
Posted by nanabear – August 5, 2007 10:12 PM
I can't agree more!!! Josh Sparkle is my guy to be the next Design Star - even thought I'll bet he'd rather hear that he's my girl! His charming personality and design choices are terrific to watch.

I WAS FLIPPING CHANNELS WHEN I CAME ACROSS DESIGN STAR - I COULD NOT BELIEVE THE DINING ROOM ROUND TABLE WITH THOSE "LEATHER CHAIRS" I NEVER SAW ANYTHING LIKE THAT FINALLY A DINING ROOM THAT LOOKS COMFORTABLE TO SIT AT. PLEASE IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO GET INFO ON HOW TO BUY SOMETHING LIKE THAT- I WAS THINKING AN OAK ROUND TABLE WITH THE LEATHER CHAIRS
