Hi Superfans! I'm sure you have noticed I am inundated with your posts. (which is awesome!) And, some of you have been asking questions...and you want answers...NOW!!! :o) So, I'd like to address some of your questions right NOW, if that's okay with you! I HOPE I can answer all of them with this blog!
Okay. First, let me reiterate that I am NOT an HGTV EMPLOYEE! I AM A FAN...JUST LIKE YOU! And, I love this network just as much as you all do. Believe me! So, let's get down to it!
#1. I LOVE HGTV. I LOVE that there is a channel on my television that my daughter and I can watch together and both of us are happy! I LOVE that she actually knows what "crown molding" is and that the last time we were in our local hardware store to buy paint, that she talked the sales guy out of his "color wheel fan thing" so that she could go home and pretend like she was on DESIGN STAR! (her challenge was to decorate the beautiful loft...all true!) I mean, come on...HGTV rocks!
#2. I cannot believe that if the "powers that be" didn't care about your views and comments and desires, that I would even be here! HGTV has given me, a NORMAL FAN, a place to talk with other normal fans! They haven't censored me ONE TIME. And, I am pretty sure the reason is because they WANT to know what we think! Which leads me to...
#3 For goodness sake! Don't quit watching the best show on television! WATCH THE SHOW! GET YOUR FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES TO WATCH THE SHOW! Better yet...If you want to get what you want...WATCH THE SHOW and then get on this blog and tell them what you think! If hundreds and hundreds of people write in and express how much they love Josh or Will or Christina or Scott, or...(you get the drift), I have a feeling they might notice it! HGTV, I feel sure, WANTS to keep their viewers and to KEEP THEIR VIEWERS HAPPY!
#4 Again, I'm just a fan, but...there is NO WAY that HGTV would rig this show! That doesn't make any sense! Because the goal for the network is to have HAPPY FANS who watch HGTV as often as they possibly can! They don't want to make their fans angry! That just isn't good business! I encourage you not only to watch, but send in your tape to be a part of season 3! Then you can see for yourselves exactly how everything is done on this critically acclaimed design reality show! (the show has already been renewed for a 3rd season!) Yea!
#5 Watch the Hawaii episode! All may be revealed during that episode! (I have a feeling there will be some fabulous surprises! I wonder if any of our favorites will show up to "assist" our finalists?) And, on that note, be sure to watch the finale! ALL of our favorites will be in the finale for sure! And...they will all have a chance to speak! And, THIS IS BIG...I've heard that Clive MAY have time to ask some questions from the viewers! So, please send your questions in to this blog! I will find a way to get your questions to Clive! (How exciting! My question is going to be something like..."Sparkle Josh, do you like redheads?")
#6 I have one blogger who keeps insisting that I explain why I said that "Both remaining contestants are so deserving in completely different ways!" Okay! Here is my explanation...Umm...Because they are! No matter what you think about either of them, out of thousands of hopefuls, they are in the top two! There is something special about both of them!
Todd is energetic and unintentionally comes off as arrogant. I've heard that he is a really great guy. And, I think we are beginning to see that sweet side of him shining through! He lives life to the fullest. He wants to push the limits. He wants to enjoy every second of every day. Is that so wrong? I admire anyone with energy! And, you know there are a lot of different kinds of design. Maybe he could have a really cool Exterior Design show? I know I could use some serious advice regarding the exterior of my house! Remember, he is an artist! Hmmm....I seem to remember another guy who was on Design Star...He was an artist too...Had never done interior design before Design Star...Beloved by all...What was his name? Yes! That's right! David B. And, what is one of the recurring themes on this blog? None of us would EVER miss David's show! So, hopefully this explains my position regarding Todd.
Now, Kim's turn! Kim is as honest as they come! She openly admits that she is a "design enthusiast" not a professional. But, look at Rachael Ray! A few years ago she was standing in the corners of grocery stores, showing housewives how to make 10 minute meals. Kim just may be design's Rachael. I don't know. I do know that she works hard and does good work, she seems to be as sharp as a tack, and has great taste! I can see her doing a show where she teaches us how to (for instance) make that great coffee table she did for her individual challenge. She could teach us how to get a high end look on a shoestring budget. (my kind of show) And, the judges definitely see something in her. Which leads me to...
#7 You guys! Lay off of the poor judges! Vern Yip is the most professional, sincere person on television! And, I can't imagine that Cynthia Rowley and Martha McCully got where they are in life by acting like giddy school girls! Remember, Martha runs a hugely succesful national celebrity and design magazine. And, Cynthia runs an extremely succesful fashion business...she's considered a fashion icon! And she also has a succesful HOME fashion design business with products in Target stores. For all we know, when Martha said, "I'd watch his show." she was talking about Sparkle Josh! We don't know. EDITING is an amazing thing! I really think the judges are honestly TRYING to do the best job they can with the information they've been given. And besides, judges are meant to give their opinion, aren't they?
#8 In case you've missed it...I AM JUST A FAN. But, I'm no dumb dumb. It's pretty obvious to me that out of this DESIGN STAR show, we may 1. Get a Fabulous Design Star. and 2. POSSIBLY get a couple of other "stars" out of the deal as well! (if we keep voicing our opinions) If you ask me, it's WIN WIN! Keep watching the show. Keep writing in. I think everybody may be happy one of these days!
#9 The reason that Will Smith doesn't have his own blog heading, (like Sparkle Josh), is simply this...he hasn't asked for one. He just wrote in just like everyone else. He's never contacted me or anything like that. NOT that Sparkle Josh asked for his own blog!!! Don't start thinking that! But, truthfully, I just thought it would be an easier way for Josh to communicate with his fans. It was my suggestion when I GOT TO TALK TO HIM ON THE PHONE! :o) Seriously, though. There is nothing more to it than that!
And, my final reason I'm blogging tonight...
#10 Regarding your blogs being approved before they are posted on the internet...Your blogs are very important to me. But, lots and lots and lots of people read them. I have to make sure that what is being said in your blogs, is 1. true. And, 2. decent. It isn't personal! I'm pretty sure that most blogs are managed this same way. I want your blog online almost as much as you do! (or more!) Seriously!
I hope this helps. You truly are Superfans! I love you guys! Now, I better get back to posting your blogs!
Be the first to comment! Enter your comment in the form below.
I was confused by the judge's comments about Christina Ray...did she decide to leave the show, or was she voted off?

YAAAAAHOOOOOO! Kim is the next Design Star! Loved her from the beginning. Can't wait to watch her show.

Hey thanks IWakins, for all your blogs.I had no idea who you were or why you were more or less in charge, not that anyone is,but it helps to understand now..You have done a great job with your keeping this going an all of us..Yes, there were alot of us that have been disappointed this year an almost didn't want to watch til the end..I sure want Kim to win because I feel she deserves to win..Todd just isn't (most of us) "our cup of tea", he sure isn't for me..He does have some ability to do stuff, but to be on t.v.speaking as a host ,well he doesn't have what it takes.I feel Will had a better way of explaining his room than Todd did an I sure got upset with Vern when he told Will he didn't have what it takes to be on T.V..He(Will)looked so let down when Vern said that..Will did a great job on his last show an the judge(s) stole it from him..What a shame..I don't know about the women judges an all that has been said ,but I really don't care, they both are very well respected women in their field of work..I doubt if anyone with HGTV will read or hear how we all feel so it doesn't matter..I do like both of them, an Vern he just gives off a certain way about him..I do know he is very gifted, his rooms are the most beautiful ever..I just hope the next DS3 will be much better than this one has been ..I do have to say we sure are lucky to have this site to vent all we do an I thank HGTV an Iwalkins for that..
AWWWW!!! Thank you so much, cat555! What a nice thing to say! And, it has been my pleasure to facilitate this blog! Seriously! It has been a real honor to help you all get your thoughts out there for others to read! Thanks again, so much! lwatkins :o)

It's all over and now we wait for the grand finally. I see by the blogs that Sparkle Josh and Will are still number one in the viewers eyes. I sort of lost interest when they were eliminated. I have seen some designers such as the bad bath thing who are such show offs and believe the show is all about them. I am so glad that is gone. Some peoples personalities are a turn off even if they are good designers. I too would like to see Will and Josh have a show. Both in my opinion are wonderful designers. Todd maybe a nice person but all those acrobat antics frankly gets on my nerves. I watch the show for the design not to see if the designer has a wonderful personality. I love the way Candice Olson has fun with her team but doesn't focus so much on herself. Vern Yip doesn't do a lot of crazy things either but he is a wonderful designer. Why does he expect the Design Stars to be nuts? Kim has a real good way about her. She seems sincere and doesn't do crazy things. My vote is for her since I can't vote for Sparkle Josh. Very disappointed, hope he will get his chance at some later date.

Well, the show is over, thank goodness. It was such a let down, I have told everyone in the past that Design star was a show worth the time to watch. I will not be mentioning it again.
The show should be about talented designers, their designs and abilities to design under challenging conditions. The judges should have a different set of guidelines and certainly should not show they have favorites.
So dissappointed, Linda

I wish I could have voted by phone. Couldn't find the right address until tonight. Would have voted for the gentleman. Hope he won.

Well, have to say, I am a HGTV addict.
I have it on 24 hrs a day, (well, when i'm
home, and not at work), and shows like design star, and 24 hr design inspire me to do things
around my own home, which i think happeens to us all. I actually sucked my husband into design star last season, and now this season, he watched the entire season recap with me on labor day weekend! He's a contractor., funny, huh?
I did pick kim from the start, so that makes me feel like i have some good taste! The truth is,
all of the designers have thier own style, and its just a matter of personal taste., but you have
to be able to meet the needs of your clients.
And about that room kim did., well, ya, maybe the chair was out of place, but LOOK what she did
with the dining room., is everyone forgetting,
that she saw that, that room was connected, (by sight), and that she had to make that money go even further. I think the needs of her family in
virgina, were very basic, and she didnt need to razzle dazzle., know what i mean? She just gave them a pure simple honest design. i think anymore than what she did, would not have matched
the rest of the home., and thats why she is smart, and right on the mark. So, that suite in Hawaii, was FANTASTIC!! Loved it., it was done very
tastefully!! Lisa

No, I don't think the judges rigged anything. I do think Yip's obvious bent towards Todd's off the wall decorating is in direct contrast with the commercials where he talks about designing for real people. Who in the world wants a dangerous lazy susan in their front room when a swivel chair accomplishes the same purpose? How many of us even have the space for something so ridiculous? did you EVER want a skateboard quarter tube in your home? How about broken tables? Come on!!!!!!!!! Will's designs took into account space, practicality, and goals of the owner as well as good colorand design. The judges did not give us the best two finalists. I hope that DS#3 has a lot better slate to work with. Meanwhile, I'll watch David, vote for Kim as the lesser of 2 evils--yes, I'd rather have a hair dresser than an immature surfing beach boy with the emphasis on BOY.

I really enjoyed reading all the blogs and agree with most. We the viewers should have more of a say. The Vegas wedding was so hard to watch and to let two people with with no design skills AT ALL let Christine go was SOOOOOOOOOO WRONG. Whose bright idea was that? Please bring her and Sparking Josh and Will back next season and let us the viewers vote, after all, we are the ones that will be watching the show. This year I don't know if I'll watch either show. I love Daivd's Show. He truly has talent, but this year was a disappointment. PLEASE DON'T LET TWO PEOPLE, THAT AREN'T JUDGES OR DESIGNERS HAVE THE POWER TO TAKE SOMEONE LIKE CHRISTINE OFF. SO SO WRONG-THEY WERE NOT JUDGES. I KNOW I'M REPEATING MYSELF, BUT THAT REALLY UPSET ME. LET US THE VIEWERS VOTE PEOPLE OFF. IF YOU HAD DONE THAT IT WOULD OF BEEN A BETTER ENDING.

Both final contestants are great! On the final, I vote for Kim, as she designed 3 seperate areas! Her colors were great, she listen to the judges on their suggestions..Todd is to focus on bring the outside in with his colors, all you have to do is open the drapes to bring the outside in! Way to much blue!
Posted by S Childers – September 10, 2007 1:26 PM
First of all to Terri... I don't think the fact that Todd just now revealed he has a wife really has anything to do with whether to vote for him or not. That's personal information and the contestants are not politicians that will be running our country. The show really doesn't have anything to do with the contestants personal lives. Personally, I do prefer Kim's style over Todd's but my opinion is based on their style and hosting abilities not their personal lives.
Second, lwatkins I think you are doing a wonderful job with the blog. Thank you so much for all your time and hard work. There are always going to be people who make negative comments and find fault with things. At the end of the day though I think we all need to remember Design Star is just a tv show and entertainment for us. Voicing our opinions is great and fun, but I don't think there's any reason to get nasty and mean with the judges, contestants, or our blog host, lwatkins.

Comment in response to Nicole Duke, I think Will did not change the bed out for Bridget had to do with issues relating to her handicap, that were not elaborated on. It would have been like changing an reordering her wheel chair in two days. He had to probably consider what size bed was needed for her to get into and out of independently. There were a lot of limitations placed on furniture, size and height because of her handicap. It probaby needed to be specially made and that required more than two days, and probably required research for what would work best, it could not be done in the time alloted so he made the smart decision and just painted one that he knew worked. Everything is not as simple as it seems. Being the gentleman he is he did not feel the need to showcase that information to the world to make himself look good. His criticism of Rob's Vegas design was constructive criticism, all critism is not negative, he was right it made the design look better to cover the chips, also Kim and Todd criticised the design as well. I really never saw anything Will said about Todd's lazy susan in the Wayne Newton Room as negative he went with the flow. The only designer with great presentation skills was Kim. Neither Todd, or Robb were any better on the camera than Will, they were just louder. As for Vern he is the most fair and diplomatic of all the judges, tough but fair makes the best judges, teachers and parents, he also can design. Martha and Cynthia were emotional and I do think the show could benefit from a visiting judge for balance. I do believe Martha tries to be fair once she gets rid of the people she detest even if they can design. As for who did the first room Will or Josh it was Will, as the judges said he had a certain style and formula and you can see it. That first room matched the style of Will's individual rooms, also if you can find Josh's web site on previous episode blogs and see samples of his work you will know without a doubt it was Will, just be honest and give him his due, he can design. I think he will prosper in his future endeavors, because of his great spirit and his talent. I think Todd is gifted and fun and will gain from his exposure on the show, once Kim is crowned the Design Star. I loved sparkle Josh and would watch him on TV he has what I call personality plus++++, I hate that two other potential stars Scott and the punk rocker chick did get more of a chance to showcase their talents, I think the show needs to be a little longer and the first episode should go on without an elimination. Also they need some more ideas to showcase individual styles from the beginning. Love the show but do see need from improvment in the judging areas. I did not like the fact that someone was eliminated by people with questionable taste after the Vegas wedding presentation. Cannot wait until Sunday, I got my husband hooked on this show.

I'm so glad that Kim and Todd are left in the finals! This is my first time I've ever signed on to a Blog! How about that, it took HGTV and Design Star to get me motivated and talking on my computer! But seriously, I can tell you every show that's on HGTV and who hosts them and I'm here to tell you...it's time for someone new to step into the scene. Someone, like Todd! He has ideas that are refreshing, exciting, and on the cutting edge! He's proven to be skilled and reliable. I know Kim will do very well in her designing and I wish her all kinds of good luck and fortune. But, Todd you win my vote. Now, make sure you don't let me down!

Ok. Todd just reveals he's married and has a son. He's deceiving...I'm voting for Kim. Her design was a lot better than Todd. Hey Todd, not everyone likes surfing as a design.
Posted by Terri – September 9, 2007 10:10 PM
This comment is for Nicole Duke. You mentioned that Todd has never said anything negative about the designers or their designs. If you look back at the Vegas Wedding episode he was agreeing about Rob being a rookie about space planning and he made other remarks throughout that episode.
Just want to keep us honest.

I've been reading through the blogs; clearly those of us who write in are passionate about design. We're also self-selected, but probably each opinion you read represents the opinions of about 10,000 other people (assuming HGTV has an audience of millions of viewers). I've read some excellent comments. What would make "Design Star" a better series? Take a note from Bravo, and add an extra judge--a designer or artist, etc., for each show. I thought the comment that Martha should have excused herself as a judge might be the fairest idea, re: the Kim situation, but it isn't clear to me whether she knew of the relationship between the InStyle magazine executive and Kim, or not. It wasn't Kim's fault that Martha was a judge, so I think I was wrong in saying Kim should be disqualified; she isn't an employee or relative of anyone at HGTV or InStyle magazine, so those aren't disqualifying factors. Further, elaborating on some bloggers comments about how short this series was: I'll bet the show draws a good audience, so why make it so short? I'm such a fan, I know how many reruns HGTV runs, and it's way too many. So I'd make the series longer. We never got to know much about each of the designers in this year's series; the double eliminations seemed almost like flipping a coin. Who could tell? I was alarmed to see the contest designers leaving before I even knew anything about them. And how about a little more creativity in the design challenges? How about designing a treehouse? I have a website featuring how we built our treehouse, www.foxpawpress.com and it's popular all over the world. I get hits from about 200 different countries! People seem to love treehouses. I'll bet literally millions of people secretly have always wanted a treehouse. And why not add a landscape design challenge? Give each designer a Baltimore or Washington, DC or NY City rowhouse with a postage stamp sized stoop or back yard that's the size of two postage stamps! I'd like to see more landscape design in general on HGTV.
Another comment: And this stems from Will's elimination. Gentle and soft spoken personalities are ok--they actually lend themselves to the media (go back and read Marshall McLuan. TV is a cool media, very up close and personal. The affable Walter Cronkite was so popular because he presented himself as so unflappable and laid back. Clive does so well not just because of his British accent which we Americans do love, but because he has mastered the art of understatement.) And, for example, why do the producers of the craft series insist that each artist make an ass of him or herself, making faces, etc. in each segment. I find it degrading that these designers are required to do this. Someone apparently doesn't have confidence that filming them making their craft is interesting enough or entertaining enough. Remember, we don't have to sit around and wait for the kiln to cool off, like you do. Also, the craftsmen have personalities of their own, and I'd like to see you work harder at letting us get to know them better, instead of watching them act like clowns for the film crew. Well, obviously I'm a superfan of HGTV, or I wouldn't be so aware of your imperfections. Please ignore my bluntness, required by the necessity for brevity, and take my comments as intended to be constructive. You're one of the few channels in the vast TV wasteland worth watching. I pray daily for your continued success!

I do not understand why almost everyone is so sold on Will. Not replacing Bridget's bed, that she called her baby bed, was not good design and not good thinking, in my opinion. Even with training, Will cannot improve enough to be a TV host. He does not have the charisma needed. His designs are always the same, very simplistic, and his decorative ability is lacking. Also he was critical of Robb's design in the Las Vegas wedding and of Todd's ideas in Mr. Newton's guest house, tattle-telling to Clive. I still have no clue as to who did the most in the first episode, Will or Josh?
Kim is good on TV and is cute as she can be but has no design or decorating capacity unless it is someting frou-frou. The design in West Virginia was AWFUL! There was nothing for the little girl, not even a small chair she could call her own! The table she chose for the dining area was too big and not at all rustic, and why the dark colors in an already dark place? I won't go into the placement of the furniture or the light carpet. She also grumbles quite a lot when things get hard or unpleasant. However I have to give her A-PLUS for the way she dealt with Robb.
Todd is a little showy but is fun to watch. He seems compassionate and knows how to ask questions. As for his design in the firefighter's house, what's wrong with the red wall? The" before" picture shows a huge red rug on the floor! Besides, Todd did ask about colors and if the owners had not wanted red, that is the first thing they would have mentioned.
He did give them what they wanted, for the adults and the kids. He has tremendous abilities and can problem solve, a very important asset in a designer. Yes, a carpenter can be assigned to any designer, but the designer needs to come up with the idea! His talent as an artist was show-cased in his "wave design." That was full throttle artistry! That particular space was not supposed to be functional! He nailed it! Every one else did a version of a living room.
I have also remarked that Todd never said anything negative about the other candidates or their designs. A big plus. He does have charisma, and can hone his presentation skills and will keep his shirt on if the network requests it.
I look forward to tonight show. Unless Kim has hidden talents in design and decorative abilities....

I love HGTV!! i only wish they didn't sign off at 1am in my area as i work graveyard and would love to watch late at night. As for the show, it rocks!! I love the fact that these people are not fresh out of design school, I want to see what real people come up with on their own and not what some teacher told them would be design material. Kim has the sense of family and function as for Todd he seems to have a sense for function and fun, i am just not too sure fun should always be in the mix if you were constantly designing for a profession. As for the dime store desing show I was not impressed. The rooms looked great if to be pictured but never copied in real life...I want real life, something I can copy or extract from and not have it look dime store.I almost turned the channel that night. Best wishes to both final contestents, they are both fab in their own way. I can't wait for the final showing!!! Joy

Hmmm...I'm enjoying reading the Design Star blog more than watching the last few episodes of season 2. Now that's pretty sad, isn't it? However, I'm still watching so don't scold me for stating my opinions.
Now that I've had a chance to reflect on what's happened this season, I think there are some serious design flaws in the competitions. The bottom line is, tv viewers want to see good designers compete and show off their talent and they'd like to see a deserving contestant win. As Alice put it last season, we don't want the winner to be the loudest and most obnoxious person in the group.
Team competitions are a good way of determining how well people work in groups so if you're going to have them, please let the judges see exactly how the designers work together in a group. I'd love to hear their comments about how this contributed to the success or failure of the project.
Since individual competitions are a much better indicator of abilities, I'd like to see the designers fly solo earlier in the season so we can see for ourselves who has talent and who is marginal. It would also give viewers a better chance to "bond" with competitors.
Finally, it will come down to either Todd or Kim as the winner of DS 2. They both seem like nice people although they are not among my top 4 or 5 choices for Design Star. Be that as it may, here are a few of my tongue-in-cheek suggestions for possible titles for a new Design Star show.
Wild And Dangerous Design ... Shopping For A Design ... Dude, Lets Party ... Anything But A Kitchen.

Thanks for your explanations, lwatkins!
OK, everyone has an opinion and that's what makes us all have a different take on how this season of Design Star has played out.
While I think that Will & Josh are amazing, I think that we really missed out on someone who has an innate sense of style,...Scott. Have you checked out his webpage?...wow...you need to google it and check it out! In the individual challenge he even admitted that he was feeling that he needed to edit some of the items in the room. So, along with Will & Josh I'd like to see Scott back as well in some capacity.
I'm rooting for Kim in the final two competition. I'm not a fan of Todd...I too, think that the no-shirt-thing is his way of trying to imitate David (ain't happenin').
Posted by lwight – September 8, 2007 8:09 PM
lwatkins, this is the first week I've read the blog and the other bloggers, I've really messed up by not reading them. I agree with a lot of the others, this season wasn't as good as last year. I would have quit watching if Robb had made it to the final 2. I really liked Will Smith, his personality just isn't overly excitable, but I think he could be a great host, he showed a lot of talent.
As for the 99 cent store episode, what was with that? I shop there for little gifts for my granddaughter who I see every day and that's it , I wouldn't decorate my home from there. I didn't care for anyone's design that week.
Kim is a very fast learner and she has shown great improvement each week.I don't know if I will vote for her or Todd, but I will vote, based on who does the best in Hawaii.
I think Design Star should come to Phoenix or Scottsdale next. We have retirees from all over the U.S. here.
I, too believe we should be able to vote before the final two, maybe halfway through the season. I hated seeing Christina go.
I really LOVE HGTV. My favorite shows are Designed to Sell and Design on a Dime. I think Lisa and Clive and Brooks and Steave. They are a good team. I like Divine Design too.

I can't wait for Sunday night!
Posted by momsthumper – September 8, 2007 7:27 PM
Hi IWatkins, Thank you for doing the blog for us fans of Design Star!
This has been a very interesting read. Many are disappointed as I. It is sad to see the Design Star series this year be a frustration instead of a joy. Last year I was completely consumed and especially by David and Alice as they did their final competition. This year I don't even want to watch on Sunday night or next week, simply because I don't have any interest at all. I feel bad about that but it's true. I find Todd Davis and Kim Myles to be mediocre. They have certain qualities but nothing like Will Smith or Josh Johnson who have great design skills and talents and people skills.
Who is to blame? Isn't it the judges?
Last years contestants were not as good as David. This year the pool of talent was much better - several more qualities but perhaps that is the problem. I think we viewers would prefer having a "shoe-in" from the beginning as David was last year. Yet, this year we have the same judges (well accept David was a judge because Cynthia couldn't attend on the preliminary part) but I sincerely feel the judges this year made serious errors. I even think the facial expressions by Cynthia Rowley were indicative of her not wanting certain ones to leave (noticed in reruns).
Perhaps next year the elimination process could be strengthen to bring about a better show? Perhaps the judges could view the show footage prior to elimination? Perhaps the public could vote as well as the judges (such as, Dancing with the Stars)? Or perhaps the Judges could tell us a score number (pop up card) so we know what judge wanted what person off or on?
Something needs to be done to improve upon the format in order for Design Star to continue because this past season 2 was really quite bad. In fact, very bad and not pleasant viewing or learning at all. Aren't HGTV shows supposed to be educational, informational and then entertaining third?
Personally, I watch Design Star to learn, to get creative impetus in order to bring about better designs in my home and business (I design for a living). It is a great premise but not a great format. Many things need to be redone, remodeled and refurbished for the Show to go on, in my home anyway. It is sad. I wanted to jump for joy for the winner but now won't be watching it any further. I wanted Will or Josh J. - or Christina - or Scott. (Christina being eliminated by two very tacky clients was so wrong!)
This season 2 had too much drama and not enough design ideas. Think it over - I know I will
before watching next season. This season is over because it is boring, mudane and just plain awful! Sorry but it's true. "Flop" comes to mind.
Next year if the series is judged in the same method -- I won't watch it at all.
Thank you for your time and I have enjoyed reading this blog.

Funny mine was lost. hope design star makes it to number three

I think the Design star contest limits what some are capabile of doing. Because of partly the contests and judges ideas about design. I am afraid that soon no one will want to be on it. Only the wannabes and inexperinced. I think criteria has to be changed.
Scott had real talent and his was eliminated for too much detail. Some shoppers saved the projects, but were sent home. The budget of hgtv and time were the contributers to the downfall for lets say the loss of just as good designers as any other. And why does the person have to be such a good host. If other shows have hosts for the designers, why necessary in this one.
Their has been some good ideas presented here in these blogs.
We need variety of styles of shows on Hgtv to represent all of us very different people. There are two sides to a coin. One side design stars and other side which I belong to. I have noticed that those who come off of design star are of one kind. On the other hand there are those of us who are fond of designers like Candice Olson and who are seen in Decorating Cents. Prhaps you can design another show to bring in those kind of Decorator/designers that would please us as well. For this new show we would need a whole new set of judges who are like Candice and some other Designers in ideas about design/Decorating.
I have enjoyed Design star for the drama and story line as any other drama reality show. I do not deny that.I know there is nothing serious about it. The more they try the worse it gets.
I do not think having the contestents vote each other 'as weakest link' out is going to work. So I hope they do not pursue that.
Great entertainment. Great job getting in as many viewers at this time when interest in this channel has been fading fast. I sincerely hope you find solutions for next year.

funny someone brought up the Food Network after i posted last nite, and the Next Food Network Star. there's another situation that turned into a mess this season.
and i was thinking last nite, "What if a just-starting-up-in-teevee Julia Child were to come along TODAY and enter such a contest?" Would she be dismissed as undesirable because of her presentation style, her seeming clumsiness, her mistakes, her lack of "prettiness", her height? afer all, any jerkwad can make an omelet, right?
WRONG.
is this kind of contest over at FN and here on HGTV really just a dismaying reflection of a change in trends as to what people purportedly want to SEE? is that part of what is going on here, how the culture has changed in the intervening 45 years since julia's first appearance on teevee?
i personally have a high opinion of David Bromstad because of his work and i ignore antics which do not amuse me - i've been doing that with Candice for years and am an expert at it. but how many people voted for him not because of that skill but because of his looks and antics and personal style?
we see our sweet William headed out the door because he just isn't "exciting" and what do we have left? another cute guy "performer" whose personal style is similar to David's but whose design skills, once one peers around the corner, and many have here (i love the remarks about the child safety issues of the kid stuff he put in that room), are not particularly up to snuff in a lot of ways.
if i'd paid to watch this series, i'd be demanding a refund. an influential teevee network has two choices - go with trends or set them. i thought until this year that HGTV was setting trends with knockout stuff like the original Designed to Sell and Clive and Lisa, both very talented people who know how to do it right in a straightforward, charming, and simple fashion.
NOW look at Design to Sell. Two new teams, one of which is only adequate, and the other of which seems to think that dancing in the street has something to do with design.
HUH? comeon, HGTV. you were right the first time.

I haven't blogged since the the beginning of this season and am still amazed at how many comments there are! It's like a DS Support Group! Thank you, IWatkins, for allowing us an outlet to purge our weekly feelings! I am a devoted fan as well, and am so impressed by the fact that Josh, Kim, Todd and Kim's dad have all posted on here. I have to look for Will's comments, haven't found them yet, but am eager to see what he has to say, love him! As for Kim's dad's post; You can see where she gets her diplomatic approach from - well done dad! I'm very proud of her as well - this Sunday's gonna be tough!
As for Josh and Will; I miss them both so much! I agree that they are both true talents and, as an added bonus, completely gracious gentlemen! I have undying respect for each of them and KNOW that great things will come from this exposure, so in a way, I'm happy for them. Now they can "get their style on" in the private sector - go get 'em boys!
I agree with much that has been said about the ways in which to improve the next season. My favorite suggestion, that a couple of people posted, is:
The idea of a challenge where a particular style is chosen (cottage, tuscan, victorian, etc.), and each designer has to implement that style into his/her design - that would make for great TV and yes, would be an excellent way to judge each designer's strengths/weaknesses. An actual challenge! Great idea guys - hope it makes it to marketing!
I also wouldn't mind switching up the judges a little - or having guest commentators, as more that one of you suggested. Candice Olsen and/or Kenneth Brown would both be excellent in this regard.
Clearly there are tons of DS addicts out here, waiting, wondering and sharing their views....what will we do when this season's over? I hope HGTV gets Season 3 underway right quick. I think they know they've got a winner here, so I don't want to have to wait so long for the next fix!
Great job everyone; Designers, Judges and bloggers alike!

When is HGTV going to get it's act together and squash this rumor campaign that is going around about Kim Myles? Someone is behind it and must have a very strong motive to see that she loses and Todd wins. It is criminal what is being said; all of it totally untrue. To imagine that this is the work of ardent fans is to stretch credulity. Someone is working very hard to destroy her chances and HGTV should make some effort to find out who and where its coming from and defend both Kim and HGTV.
Posted by Bob Hawkes – September 8, 2007 12:46 PM
Addendum to my previous blog: Send Kim to design school; a great show for her might be to follow her through classes at a formal design school to see what it is all about and hear her commentary. One of the best challenges from season 1 was when each designer picked a different color from their paint can and then did identical apartments in their color.
Thanks.

Todd's not licensed in the state of California, so he can't call himself a landscape architect.
Don't the producers check a contestant's credentials?

I am new to Design Star this year - to be truthful, I picked up on it because I have watched all three seasons of The Next Food Network Star.
After watching this year's competition and reading the comments attached to this blog entry, I too have a few opinions.
First - lwatkins, thanks for the blogging effort. You and the site have certainly provided viewers with the ability to applaud and vent as noted by all the posts.
In this competition, much like Food Network's, I will vote with a number of other people who mention the elimination format.
When a person is "canceled" after the first show, we haven't had the opportunity to get to know them or their particular style AT ALL. If this is only going to be a "seasonal" show - someone mentioned 6 to 8 weeks - then start with fewer contestants.
I think each person who has been selected deserves at least one attempt at an individual challenge and one attempt at a group challenge before elimination.
The judges should be privy to the footage we viewers at home see - I cannot believe that any of the judges would have moved Robb as far up in the competition if they had observed his crase, over-bearing, crude and overly boastful personality. Would any of them choose to work with this guy given his attitude?
I love Vern and for the most part thought his comments were good - I disagreed on a few things, but he's the professional designer and is working with professional knowledge rather than a (in my case)personal preference.
The audience judges both on design quality and personality, so we do not need judges drooling over contestants. I, like a lot of other viewers was put off by the fawning over Todd by Cynthia. (And yes, I would have found a male judge fawning over a female contestant just as objectionable.)
Having said this, if the judges are not going to have the opportunity to see the interaction of the contestants, then the voting should be more along the lines of the Dancing With the Stars - 50/50. That way the influence of the pros are taken into consideration as well as the preferences of the audience. (This also lessens the American Idol popularity contest factor.)
I don't have a problem with the "untrained" participant. There haven't always been schools for designers. Designing is a blend of influences - art, architecture, form, function, color, space, climate, needs, tastes, desires and funding to name a few. I think there exists the possibility that a "natural" is still out there waiting to be discovered. And how exciting would that be to see someone without formal training blow past all the "pros" and steal the show?
I also agree that more than one show can come out of the competition. To this end, I would love to see both Josh and Will considered for a combo or individual shows. And, since I didn't see last year's show, but from the blog I gather David may not have been the strongest presenter, I think Will was underrated. With a bit of coaching, he would have found his presentation style.
And quite frankly, I thought Will did the best room in his final challenge. He designed for the client and isn't that what it's all about?
I am looking forward to the final tomorrow evening. It will be interesting to see the results, but so far, I am leaning towards Kim. She seems to be able to be a bit more flexible than Todd. Now, maybe Todd will surprise everyone and design something totally fabulous with absolutely no homage to his "extreme" lifestyle - no window displays, no surfing motifs....I'll wait and see. Good Luck To Kim and Todd.
WHEN WILL JOSH JOHNSON AND WILL SMITH GET THEIR SHOW(s)?

I love this show. Love It !!!!!!!!!!!!! My husband doesn't understand why I would rather watch this than a movie, I was trying to rate the shows, but was not able to. I logged in and went to that page but, there wasn't a comment box like what I'm using now. I believe that kim has the best chance of winning the challenge. She really has come along way. I just bought my first house in January. It was built in 1997. I just don't have the finace at this time to do anything with it. All i can do at this moment is dream. I hope that this show stays on the air for a long time. 229111

LWatkins, thanks for keeping this blog. I have been a little disappointed this year in the show, but reading the blog has been a lot of fun. It is nice to know there are other folks out there with the same feelings. So, thanks again and good luck to Todd and Kim.

Not sure who I will vote for just yet but I am leaning towards Kim. She shines almost as much Sparkle Josh.
I don't think I can take another good looking guy who likes to puff himself up by showing all the world what his pecs look like or how young he'll always be; then again I'm not the one who has to answer for the ratings of this show :o)
Will, Scott, Sparkle Josh, were all unique and talented, sorry to see they've gone. They went with grace and humility, thank you guys, who ever raised you did right.
Thanks HGTV for another show which I've enjoyed over all. Oh, by the way, don't let Lisa LaPorta go; she and Clive make a great team!

Yes, chuckle, please no more Las Vegas wedding designs on future design stars. Talk about watching in pain !! It just descended into utter madness before they were done. Poor Sparkle Josh, being reduced to twirling ghastly feather boas around chair backs - what a waste of his developing talents.
The more I think about it, the more I really do want to see a judges panel consisting of dedicated working designers who have current experience in home interior design coupled with actual television experience in the field. The challenges being given to the contestants, after all, largely focus on those two issues, so why not have expert judges from the same field?
Vern Yip appears to have done a fine judging job for two seasons in terms of at least those of his utterances that we have heard, and little wonder with his background and experience - he knows exactly what to look for, he's been there and done that work. Sure, the three judges will disagree on some points, but at least they'll be on a level and familiar playing field with each other. And the contestants deserve to be judged by possible future peers in the trade. This is serious stuff affecting future possible careers, so let's give these contestants the best judges we can.
As it is, the judging setup was flawed from the start of Season 1, and I think the only reason that Season 1 actually worked was because D.B. was pretty much a shoo-in from the gitgo from every angle. He was an easy choice to get to the finals, as was his lady "opponent" and friend. And then it was all in our hands.
This year, the weak setup broke under the strain of no individual talent and personal style being really standout, with no major flaws. This season has tested the judging panel's ability to deal with much worse conundrums and puzzles all the way up to and including the selection of the two final candidates. And it hasn't gone consistently well.
If it's true that "pop" is what they are looking for, HGTV may need to rethink its position and take another gander at Kenneth Brown, for example, a generally quiet and peaceful almost zen guy with a sweet modesty and low-key sense of humor, and the ratings for his show. They may not be reading their audience correctly thinking that we need all this "pop". I'm a regular watcher of Divine Design (including reruns of shows I've seen before as I myself learn more about design as the years pass and see them differently each time) because I think Olson is just a crackerjack designer, but I have to confess that I sometimes positively wince at Olson's antics. They're just not necessary and detract from the work at hand.
If we look at some of the new HGTV shows/casts, we see a lot of "hyper" in their stars - the young designer and her crew in Design to Sell (DANCING?), the excitable designer in Spice Up My Kitchen, etc. It just seems like some of these folks can't settle down.
Don't BRAVO your network, HGTV. Don't give priority to "personality". Don't make the mistake of thinking that your audience can't enjoy a quiet extremely competent guy wending his way thru the design of the week.
Give us the peaceful sweet Wills and their quality work and we'll be there every week. Only minor smoothing out of "hosting skills" was needed for Will, and he would have been just dandy. No one has to be a "personality". This ain't show business, it's interior design.
:)

I love HGTV and I love Design Star. I love to see how all the different people come up with their ideals. Maybe next year I can be on Design Star. I love Todd's designs!!!!!!! Hope to see his show soon.

What a mess. I don't care anymore who wins. I won't be voting or watching the new show. As someone wrote, it's not easy to change loyalities. It's even harder when you know what you're left with is not the people's choice or the most talented people in the competition. I do hope HGTV changes it's format next year. They need to get a better overall group of people. The similarity between some of the people last year and this year was weird. Who didn't know the strange designer Lisa would get booted first??? We don't want a FORMULA show. The one that got booted first last year was stranger, but do you see a pattern? Maybe if we had time to get to KNOW the contestants it would be easier to root for others. Maybe if the judges were CONSISTANT in there critiques they would receive less criticism themselves. Last year Todd would have been shot down for all that RED in the room. Kim would have been told her design was uninspired and impersonal. One of them would have been eliminated. As for Kim being friends with an Editor at McCully's magazine, Martha should have disqualified herself from judging. Right or wrong ANY appearance of favortism in a contest leaves a bad taste in people's mouths. As for people complaining about the negativity, when you have a site that says RATE MY WORK, you can't expect it all to be positive, but there is a way to say certain things. I do like many other Hgtv shows and will continue to watch them. Love Color Splash.

My first blog, so be patient. Being an avid HGTV fan, (I watch way too much - Divine Design, House Hunters, the whole gamut - okay I LOVE HGTV) I too could hardly wait for the season to begin. This season was entertaining with its coloful characters but a bit disappointing because my favorites did not make it.
However, my biggest disappointment with this year's show was more about the judges and that is sad because it should not have been. Along with many others, I believe that any judge, for any competition, must maintain a modicum of impartiality and I hope HGTV recognized that one of the three did not!
Another blogger suggested Candice Olsen and Kenneth Brown as potential judges, so instead of voting for Design Star, I vote to replace one of the judges. How Divine!
(Candice - I love your style. Will you do redo my place? smile)

My biggest complaint about Todd is that he seems to have decided that David's sex appeal was what gave him the winning edge last year. Therefore Todd takes off his shirt every time he's given any chance. Do I think it has anything to do with his metabolism? No way! It's a very transparent ploy. Sure he has a good body, but that shouldn't be what gets him his own show on THIS network.
Posted by Marcelyn – September 7, 2007 10:24 PM
First, I think Kim is great! She seems to be a very sincere and genuine person. Having said that, I think if Todd doesn't win it is going to be because he has a very cocky attitude. Kim has been very gracious about "wow, I can't believe I am in the final three"...Todd, on the other hand, says "I'm going to ace this one and I'm going to ace the final one".
A personal note to Todd: 1) you are NOT the best looking man on the planet...not even close and 2) there is a HUGE difference between being CONFIDENT and being COCKY! Confidence is a very attractive feature, cocky is just plain obnoxious! Tone it down or you may lose on that basis alone! You DO NOT have a lock on this competition and the viewer's are going to decide who wins .... most of whom don't have any design education and will vote STRICTLY on whether or not they like you....I truly believe if you lose this competition it will be because you have been TELLING all of us that you ARE going to win from the beginning. The viewer's may just not vote for you out of spite!
Posted by Terri – September 7, 2007 9:57 PM
TODD...TODD...TODD...what are you thinking? Why would you build a toy box with no safety slide hinge on it? As soon as those little children open that box, the lid is going to SMASH their fingers. I really can't believe the JUDGES didn't catch that. Safety is foremost when designing and building for children. Todd, I really hope you build for the REAL WORLD per this Hawaii challenge, and not build for HIPE!!

The marketing department might consider that they wouldn't have to sell us on something that we already want. I state this to be constructive, not destructive. Since the top rated rooms thus far have starred Will alone or involved Will, he's the winner with your major audience. He also is very admired for the goodwill that he created by the most gentlemanly and touching exit ever. The two finalists cannot be altered, but there is nothing to prevent HGTV from creating another program with Will.
I also think that HGTV did very well in preparing
the program, "Deserving Design," as the concept was often proposed by your audience last year
when they were commenting on Design Star I.

I really do not like “reality TV”, but I love Design Star. I have never blogged before, and have sent in only two; but this is really entertaining. However, I have not enjoyed this Design Star as much as last year . . . perhaps there was more talent this time and therefore, more likely for viewers to second guess the judges.
So, here is my second guessing.
It was clear that Martha McCully did not like Will Smith almost from the beginning . . . “I’m least impressed with Will “ . . . . etc. First, she said his hosting lacked energy; then, when he was more energetic, she said he was trying too hard. I used to work for someone like that . . . I quit at the first opportunity. (Apparently the competitors read the blogs, because Will picked up on someone (or thought of it himself) who said “Where there’s a Will there’s a Way to good design.”) I loved that; would have made a wonderful tag line or title for his show.
While, it does appear that Will seems to do very similar designs . . . according to Ms. McCully and Ms. Rawley (“very formulaic?”) Vern noted that one could argue that was his signature; I have noticed that many designers have a “signature.”
I still say that both women judges are just infatuated with that blonde surfing Adonis; nothing wrong with good looks, but this is about interior design, not “America’s next top model.” Todd seems more suited for taking off his shirt and designing Abercrombie & Fitch store windows.
While Kim is very good in front of the camera, her design skills are just not professional enough for a really high quality design show.
Very, Very disappointing.
I still say that Will and Sparkle Josh were probably the best. I think that Scott would also have been better had he lasted past the 99-cent fiasco.
Have recently watched Candace Olsen, Kenneth Brown, and Homes Across America in the middle of all this Design Star thing. The difference between true professional design and the Design Stars is striking. The Design Star rooms have been very “amateurish” by comparison. Seems like last season the completed rooms were better, but I may have some memory loss here. Of course, Divine Design and other similar shows have huge budgets and unlimited time to complete.
My suggestions for Design Star 3:
Next season, I would really like to see the contest restricted to people with formal design experience (a real job in the interior design field for 2-3 yrs minimum) and /or formal design training through accredited programs or universities. Enough with the “self-taught” design enthusiasts with a “passion” for design! I am a “self-taught design enthusiast” (although my mother was an interior designer by training, so I have lived around good design); I watch HGTV for professional ideas for my home, but would no more try to do someone else’s home than I would surf the English Channel.
Am not sure training as an artist is really applicable either . . . David Bromstad is an artist, by training I think; his rooms are okay and his use of color is certainly appropriate to his artistic training; but, he insists on doing some artwork for each of his clients which is kind of a gimmick. (Full disclosure, I rarely watch Color Splash.) So, given that Todd is another hunk (like Design Star 1) and is an artist (like Design Star 1), it all seems a bit too repetitive and boring.
Try out some new/additional judges: Vern Yip offers helpful advice and commentary. Would like to see Candace Olsen, Michael Payne, Joe Rugerrio (Homes Across America), Kenneth Brown, for example. If not as judges, as guest commentators.
Also, reduce the number of double eliminations. And perhaps, no one should be eliminated on the first show; give everyone at least one more chance at it.
One or two less teaming competitions; one or two more individual competitions.
An excellent challenge would be to test on different design styles; have each contestant randomly draw a style from their paint can (Victorian, Country French, Contemporary, Asian, British Colonial, Arts & Crafts, Cottage, English Garden, Mediterranean, etc. etc. etc.). Give them some time to do some research and then design identical individual rooms in a specific style. (Giving the contestants some research time might prevent a disaster like the fake-looking Tuscan kitchen.)
I really liked the “Designer’s Challenge” from the first season, but the same format for the wedding was a little weak. I also thought it interesting that Scott (the professional wedding planner) was eliminated just before this challenge. Did anyone else notice that?
At any rate, I love HGTV. If any one at HGTV cares, my favorite shows are Divine Design, Homes Across America, Kenneth Brown’s show, Designer’s Challenge, and Spice Up My Kitchen (probably because I am re-doing a kitchen in a 1939 house). I always liked Michael Payne in Designing for the Sexes, but it doesn’t seem to be on anymore; the new show that is similar is not nearly as good.
My other favorite is Double Take, which is not on much anymore. Re-creating very expensive rooms on a budget is very, very useful to normal people; although you might try a slightly larger budget for better results; i.e. say 10% of the cost of the designer room. ($5,000 for a $50,000 room? $2,000 for a $20,000 room?) This also might make a good Design Star challenge; recreate a very expensive designer room on a budget.
But no matter what the final outcome, I will still look forward to a third season of Design Star.
Thanks,
Jane Also in SS,TX

I have not enjoyed this season's Design Star. First of all, I really hate the Las Vegas setting. I hope it is that setting that has created the tone of this season's contest: uncaring, glitzy, ugly.
We have not really been allowed to get to know the contestants this season. I remember all the contestants from the first season, and wonder what has happened to all of them since the show. This year:
I can hardly remember the contestants' names;
the person I felt had the most charming personality combined with design chops has already been voted off by the judges;
the competitivness has been unpleasant to have to watch because from the viewer's point of view there has been no bonding between the contestants;
the design challenges seem to center around who can make something palatable out of sheer ugliness.
I don't see a David Bromstad among this crop.
The competitions have been hideous to watch. Ye gads, that Las Vegas wedding was ghastly!
I hope HGTV learns that the pleasure in watching Design Star is the same as watching any of their other programming: It is viewing beauty being created, executed, and bringing joy that brings us pleasure--not nastiness and glitz.
I am not sure I really care who wins this competition. I am disappointed about that because last season we got a chance to really care about the contestants.
Please, next season, find some less ugly setting with less ugly temperaments competing to create less ugly design. So far, it is difficult to see how several of these designers would translate their vision into someone's living room. What is HGTV intending to have the next Design Star create: amusement parks?

I have been watching these "head in the clouds" designer wanna be's and they need a good lesson in what it really takes to remodel a home or a space. If you want to disqualify some of these "bohemian" types quickly, put them on a work crew building a house. Make them lay a carpet, put down stone or install real tile, or put together plumbing and see how long they last. I was a floor covering and tile installer for 14 years and put myself through school that way. Trust me, you learn a lot when you can spot real problems in a home and not just cover it up with "froo, froo"! Redesigning and remodeling is a lot more than Latte's and sleeping late. It's splinters, broken nails and yes sometime a knife stuck in the hand or a nail through the foot. Reality is often painful but you will get better designers.

This blog is great. Thank you Design Stars all for your hard work and living through this wild ride.
What can I say? Bring back Will and Sparkle Josh - what inspiring talent, class and heart. There are no two better deserving talented individuals!!!
Last year we cheered David onto his own fantastic show.
This year I started out routing for "Scott and Adriana". What great talents, creativity, and warm real people. Love your personality Scott! But TV is all about "PRESSURE" so we lost them. MISS YOU!!
Right from the start Will and Josh wowed us all with their wonderful, tasteful, dorm - they are a fantastic team to watch. We want to watch them!!!! Their cubicles were great, Josh's dining room was so warm and elegant. Will will shine on in that fantastic bedroom/studio!! We were blessed to be able to meet both Josh and Will.
There is "NO" reason that Will couldn't have tutored in hosting as David was.
Now we have no investment in the people remaining talent/personality wise. It seems like we lost it ever since Todd's "disaster cublicle" was deemed acceptible. Hello? What kind of show is HGTV wanting to create here?? We can't tell.

I am hooked on Design Star and cannot wait for Sunday's final challenge! both Kim and Todd are very deserving but for very different reasons and styles. I have hated to say good-bye to so many of the competitors. Best Wishes to Kim and Todd. I will be watching and voting. Mare

I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL SUNDAY TO SEE THE " HI " DESIGN STAR SHOW . I HAVE A FEELING IT IS GOING TO BE SUPER ! I WANT TO WAIT UNTIL I SEE BOTH TODD AND KIM'S DESIGN BEFORE I PLACE MY VOTE . I THINK IT IS GOING TO BE VERY CLOSE .
I THINK IN THE FUTURE SHOW'S IT WOULD BE INTRESTING IF EVERYONE HAD THE SAME ROOM , GIVEN THE SAME COLORS AND LET ALL DESIGNERS GO FROM THERE AND SEE HOW EACH ONE DESIGN IS DIFFRENT .
EACH IS GOING TO COME UP WITH SOMETHING DIFFRENT AND INTRESTING AS EACH OF US SEE THE SAME PICTURE OF SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFRENT .
I AM ALREADY WAITING TO SEE NEXT SEASONS SHOW
BUT HOPEFULLY THEY WON'T HAVE DIFFRENT ONES LEAVING SO FAST . " THE DESIGN STAR IS MY FAVORITE SHOW ON T.V. AND EVERYTHING AT MY HOUSE COMES TO A HALT WHEN IT COMES ON .
I DO WISH THAT WILL AND SPARKLE JOSH ( I LOVE THAT NAME FOR HIM - IT FITS ) WOULD DO SOMETHING TOGETHER .
I THINK ALL THE DESIGNERS HAVE HAD SOMETHING SPECIAL TO OFFER TO ALL OF US IN HIS OR HER OWN WAY .
I AM WISHING GOOD LUCK TO ALL AS I FEEL THAT SOMETHING GOOD WILL COME OUT OF THIS FOR EVERYONE CONCERNED , I KNOW THAT I WILL SEE YOU IN SOME SHOW SHOWING OFF YOUR TALENTS MAYBE NOT DESIGN STAR BUT SOME OTHER WAY OR SOME OTHER SHOW .
ONCE AGAIN GOOD LUCK TO ALL !!!
THANKS FOR A WONDERFUL SEASON OF DESIGN STAR
A BIG FAN , GERRI

The blogs go on and on about the personalities, contestants and judges. Design Star is not about design - it is about ratings. HGTV management must love all of the blah blah that won't change anything. RATINGS RULE the outcome, AKA Todd wins hands down. Just ask Martha

This is my first cntribution to comments about the Design Star contestants and finalists. I found that I agreed with at least one comment in each blog. None of us is afraid to say what we think!
I must agree with Helena's observation about Todd offering his web information. I read both his and Kim's comments and thought Kim was taking an opportunity to thank viewers and express her excitement about participating in the show. Todd offered his recap of events, experiences, and personalities (as he saw them) of the other contestants in what seemed to be an effort to amuse us but also to solicit approval (and possibly a vote?). I did not see gifted storytelling or the ability to paint vivid pictures of the other people in the penthouse. Instead, his effort to be humorous seemed unnatural and strained. This convinces me that he used the space more to preview himself (and his show?) as a funny, vibrant, articulate personality who would entertain us while coming up with great design week after week.
I agree with all who recognized that Will had the most to offer. What a gracious departure. If anyone wants to view the results of how each designer fared in each episode, you will see that Will received 4 of 5 stars in nearly everything he did, with the exception of the wedding reception - the highest total number of stars for any of the contestants. We will hear from Will again -- it's in the "Stars."

I have enjoyed this year's Design Star, just as much, or more, than I did last year's. I love David B's Color Splash and agree that he has improved his hosting skills. This year's two finalist are talented and interesting and I'm looking foward to seeing their Hawaii challenge. I agree that I was rooting for Will to be one of the final two and although Sparkle didn't really distinguish himself as a designer, he is definitely entertaining and talented and I would enjoy seeing him host a show. My vote will go to Kim, since she has natural grace in front of the camera, as well as a good design eye, even though she messed up by not replacing that mobile home door and flurescent light fixture. I live in a mobile home and those would be the first obvious design re-dos. Actually you can put wood floors down on an older mobile home (I have) but time may have been an element or accessibility (being stuck out in the country). I still liked her design over Todd's. I am so sick of Red walls. Every designer on HGTV is using Red for walls - talk about predictable! And... the furniture placement was terrible. That family specifically requested a room geared for TV watching. Look at that room and you'll see that half of the family would have broken necks if they wanted to watch TV. Will's room was not spectacular, but he was designing for his client not the judges and he hit the mark. I think Will is a success in design and in life. He has my admiration. I love the program, but maybe some new judges would be refreshing.

I think Kim would be the best TV personality for HGTV. Josh seems to try too hard. Kim has done great work in spite of several "obstacles." I really like this show. In a previous comment I suggested that there be MORE individual challenges. I do hope the format changes next year so that we can see individual work. Clive, if you are reading, thank you for being such a great host on this program. Judges (YEA Mr. Yip has a program and I can't wait!!!!!) thank you for your honest opinions about the work and the importance of "stage presence." Also, Color Splash is great and David is his absolute wonderful charming self. I am so glad you put him with a partner - now he seems to have a team! Thanks HGTV for having great television. Lynn

I forgot to add something in my other blog to Josh. But I just wanted to say I truly admired the way Will handled his elimination compared to Robb...The difference between a gentleman and a egotistical big mouth. I only wish he had been eliminated sooner. I sure wouldn't watch a show if he was the host.

I have really enjoyed the competition this year. So much talent and personality to choose from...I'm glad I'm not one of the judges. Todd's imagination is out of sight, but Kim has been my pick from the very beginning of the contest. Her design style, her warmth and her easy manner in front of the camera make her a pleasure to watch. I doubt she'll need all the training that David endured.
But no one who competed should feel bad not to have made it to the end. The bar was definately raised this year. In my opinion, they're all stars!Good luck, Kim.

Thank you lwatkins for this post. I'm sorry that it looks like some still did not get the theme of the post and insist on being negative anyway.
Todd and Kim all the best to both of you and good luck!!
As for you asking for suggestions for HGTV here are a couple that I loved from the message boards. Someone did a Poll with things people had said they would like to see HGTV implement. It was titled "If you had the power to change Design Star". Here's a copy:
"Everyone seems to have a gripe (or several) about this year's show. If memory serves, I think there were a few about last year, too.
So, let's pretend that the management has put YOU in charge. Careful, don't let it go to your head, but use your power wisely!
Question:
So, if you could make just ONE change that you think would improve the show, would you choose...
Choices:
1. Do at least one individual challenge before the group and team challenges
2. Find a better source for candidates (like design schools, maybe?)
3. Make it a rule that all candidates have either design education or sufficient experience
4. Weed out the obvious losers, jerks, and overly-wierd (hey, this isn't the Gong Show!)
5. Do away with double eliminations
6. Have more judges
7. Do away with judges, and let "we the people" do that job
8. Find better judges (Candace Olsen? Michael Payne? etc.)
9. Never, ever, do a wedding reception in Las Vegas
10. Make more interesting challenges--how about different design styles, for instance?
11. Let the judges see the same footage we see, so they know if someone's cheating, juvenile, or otherwise not behaving well
For myself besides letting us the people make all the elimination/ winner decisions (or at least like one person suggested 50/50 with the judges) I would also suggest that all candidates have either design education or sufficient experience, and maybe Do at least one individual challenge before the group and team challenges. Some of the suggestions (like the weeding out of undesirables) would be taken care of by having viewers judge or better judging where the judges get to see what we do as viewers. All the suggestions have merit I think. Just some thoughts for HGTV to consider.
Thanks again for letting us have this forum to voice our opinions.

I cancelled my recording of the show after Will was eliminated. I don't care who wins now and won't watch either of the final two in a design show. I won't vote because I don't want either of them to win. Kim is very sweet, but the energy, vibrancy, talent - the whole package - just isn't there. I wouldn't miss one of David's shows - he's unbelievable. What a disappointment after last year with David and Alice. Oh, for the good ole days! I still miss Sparkle Josh and Will - what decent human beings they seem to be, and what a combination they would make on a show together.

While it probably is hard for the contestants to hear criticisms, some of that is the nature of these "competitive reality shows" (which is why I think it takes someone with a lot of guts to enter one). I think that the editing and emphasis of this season's format on the drama and less on explanation of design drives the focus towards personalities, rather than the content. I can't believe that talented editors can't change that, esp. with hundreds of hours of tape.
The other reason IMO is that being a competition, that anyone might naturally have favorites and be disappointed when those favorites are eliminated by judges since we don't have a lot of background on the whys of the elimination (again an editing issue). It may not be that easy or reasonable to expect the viewers to transfer their loyalty or likes to someone else, even though the network or the remaining competitors might think so.
A question is whether the input that is registered for "Rate This Room" is considered as part of the decision-making process? If so, that would be nice to know. If not, might that be one way for viewers to feel like active participants in the process before the final 2?
Best wishes to all the contestants this year and for their future endeavors as designers.
Thanks for the opportunity to comment and for the blog posts.

Regarding Todd's picture holding the star- These are all old pictures - taken before we ever viewed one second of the show. If you go to the "designers" tab at the top of the design star page and click on it, you'll see that ALL of the contestants have had 10 "design star" photos taken. ALL of them are holding a star somewhere in their ten pictures. And, over the course of the show, it looks like HGTV has used these different pictures of the designers in many different ways. KIM is holding a star in her #2 picture.
AMERICA chooses the winner. If more people vote for Todd, then yes, Todd will be the winner! If more people vote for Kim, then I'm guessing HGTV might want to get that picture of Kim and put it on the website! It's a cute picture!
And, while I'm at it, haven't guys been working and building shirtless since the beginning of time? I am a heterosexual young woman and I even think Todd is attractive, but, I don't even notice when he is shirtless or not shirtless. He's a guy. Guys do that.
You all are so funny!
Good luck to both Todd and Kim! Both of you seem like very talented, lovely people!
Have a HAPPY day design star lovers!

Somebody has to win and unfortunately, it has to be Kim or Todd, eh? Otherwise HGTV would probably be facing a lawsuit on breach of contract. Like another blogger noted. We already know who is going to win...look who's holding the [design] star on main page.
Posted by EX HGVT fan – September 7, 2007 4:18 AM
Why isn't there a selection for "NEITHER" on the voting screen? I think Todd has done some cool designs but is too much like the "image" HGTV has portrayed in other shows. So why the overkill with the hot young shirtless etc. etc male. Kim...well after her last challenge I'm not sure of her talent and decision making. Very poor. I'm suggesting a great new show for next season. JUDGE STAR.
Posted by EX-HGTV fan – September 7, 2007 4:12 AM
todd definetly has more talent than kim. the last chalenge made me think she was a total amateur. THE MOST VIEWED ROOMS EVERY TIME HAD WILL AND ITS A SHAME HE IS NOT THERE, HE NEEDED WORK ON HIS SPEAKING SKILL BUT HIS TALENT IS FAR FAR BETTER THAN WHO IS IN THE FINAL CUT

I too waited and waited for this years season. But I guess you can't catch lighting in a bottle twice. I hope the producers take note from some of the postings I've seen here. I really hated the early and often double eliminations and overwrought group challenges. No ones design ability really came through. And Cynthia's drooling over Todds unlivable concepts were beneath her. Even Todds shirtless scenes felt gratuitous in the wake of Davids pure likability.
Maybe it was the cast but I don't think so. I suspect HGTV was attempting to keep production costs down by these tactics and it showed. Better luck next year. Sorry Kim, I think you've got more talent but I'll bet we have another "hunky" star. Even if he's not too bright.

Todd and Kim it must hurt you to read all the bad comments about you.I guess that is what happens to all celebrities.Cheer up you have done GREAT work along with the other designers on the show. I would really like to see more of the time in the penthouse. HGTV is GREAT

threemeats, before you call anyone maroons or morons, read this from the Design Star site about the judges at the bottom of the home page:
Martha McCully, ... judge on HGTV Design Star, has been the executive editor at In Style since 2002.
Martha, as editor of the magazine, is certainly a "worker" there.
Now read this from InStyle.com by James Patrick Herman, InStyle Senior Entertainment Editor:

America's Next Top Design Star?
Is this the face of America’s new Design Star? I have no idea because even though Kim is my friend and neighbor, her lips are sealed. She’s also my hairdresser, by the way—and I think she must be the only hairdresser on the planet who refuses to gossip. So I guess we’ll all have to tune into the new season of Design Star (which airs this Sunday on HGTV) in order to find out. I’ve resorted to some sneaky tricks for getting Kim to reveal who wins (like bringing over a bottle of Patron) and even that didn’t do the trick. Damn, this gal is good! If that design stuff doesn’t pan out, she should consider working for the FBI.
People are not being dumb. They have a legitimate question about Kim's eligibility status in the Design Star contest.

I have looked forward to this year's Design Star ever since the premiere season last year. I enjoyed watching the different challenges...picking my favorite room makeovers - and being able to "critique" them along with other people just as passionate about which rooms were their favorites, their least favorites...etc.
Having said all that: this season was disappointing. Some of the things I didn't like in season one - still here this year. Too many group challenges, too many multiple eliminations too soon. I barely saw one hopeful and they were gone.
I love talking decorating and designing but it was upsetting to see some of the soap opera drama taking precedence over the actual challenges, and the character assasinations - unbearable!
And ( I am sure this is just MY opinion)...I wish the contestants were barred from blogging in here or on their own websites until AFTER the whole season has aired - it was just kind of a spoiler for me.
Anyways, looking forward to seeing Sunday's show...and still haven't decided on who I will be voting for - after all, I haven't seen the final challenge.

I have enjoyed this year's Design Star, but am disappointed at the judge's choices. Will had more going than Kim and Todd who are okay. Both have really presented their same flame throughout the competition with no WOOW! ...Todd is attractive to the lady judges with his "Beach Boy" look. He has little to offer but surfing and I am not sure he is all so sincere about what he does, yet he plays it up to make you think so. Remember he came to win and will say whatever it takes. He always flirts with the lady judges. I agree with Vern. The ladies just like to watch Todd, but he probably is a "one night stand". He doesn't have much beyond what you have seen. Kim is great on camera but her "angles" were poor and not very well thought out, I think if you went back this week to the West Virginia folks' home you will see that they have positioned the furniture to be liveable and family oriented, not distant and isolated. Since she is great at hosting, maybe she can do Clive's job next year? David and Alice both had more talent than these two in design and more genuineness. I hope you are brave enough to print this for I bet lots of others totally agree.

People keep comparing Kim to Rachel Ray, but that's like comparing apples to oranges. None of us really know what Rachel Ray's food tastes like, but we get to actually see Kim's designs. How do we really know Rachel Ray's food is as good as it looks on tv? I love them both as hosts, but no real comparison can be made based on talent.

I can only hope with the rest of the fans that they do bring Sparkle Josh and Will back. If we all watched carefully they were the BEST team. They really worked great together and remember that room. What a team they would make on a show. Come on HGTV you saw the chemistry. BRING THEM BACK!! WE LOVE THEM!!

Thank you to Todd, Kim, and Kim's dad for writing in. I sent an e-mail to Will tellling him I think he is a class act and to keep doing his good work and he wrote back! He wants everyone to keep watching the show! I intend to see it to the very end. I don't know who I'll vote for yet. I'll decide that night and it will be based on design first and personality second. Anyone can be taught to speak in front of a camera. Kim has natural talent there and would be a pleasure to watch. I'm anxious to see what she does in Hawaii (my old stomping ground!). Like me she has no formal training but she has a good eye and a natural talent for putting things together. She can be taught the rest. Todd has magnificent design talent and as for hosting, like I said, anyone can learn that. Don't sell him short. I wish Will could have stayed because he has sooo much to offer and he is an amazing talent. Being from the south (Tennessee) I understood every word he said!! Love you Will.
I beleive every contestant on this season had alot to offer but unfortunatley with the double eliminations and all the team challenges we had no way of seeing them develop. Hopefully next year, if there is one, won't be the same. This year was a bomb in that regard.
Watch the show to the end everyone. We've hung in this long what's one more week?

HI Super Fan-From EX-super fan- This season is just such a dissapointment all around-so boring in design, personalities, the way HGTV handled it-shoddy compared to last season. SORRY-but I look to HGTV for superior design-not Kim with her tacky paper plate diddies (a so-called sophisticated New Yorker ??????) The HORROR!! Todds OK-but they already have gonzo dudes Steve Watson and the cute blond guy. Do we need another??????
PLEASE HGTV dont do another season unless you can commit to some QUALITY-Im out(of this show)

I'm mad I know, Tod is gonna win because since the interview with the judges they liked him I liked Will's work I thought he used the most of his creativity and just because he doesn't look like a male model was eliminated we r looking for talent someone we can relate to not somebody that looks like a movie star! Tod is always with his shirt off!!! They were looking fo the next desing star not the next Male model!!!for real. Another thing his first room all blue and broken tables I know I'll be mad if somebody leaves my room looking like that..LOL and that skating board thingy in the middle of a living room whats with that? What kind of a desing star is this??
Posted by ladybug – September 6, 2007 7:21 PM
Vicki - thanks for setting the record straight on what was on Todd's blog. It just worries me that HGTV could give Todd an assistant like they did with David B, and if Todd had any influence, then it might end up being Rob. Oh well, its not like my TV is stuck on HGTV 24/7 - I could switch the channel for 30 minutes...but JUST 30 minutes :) Seriously I'd like to wish best of luck to Kim and Todd - I've already written Will to express my dismay and he so graciously replied. He said he had lost nothing, but gained much. Gotta love that guy :)

Well, they finally got rid of Will. I thought that would happen. He did a fabulous job designing that room for that disabled person. Kim is a very sweet caring person but doesn't have designing talents. Todd has some talent as a designer but didn't make his last assignment pop. I believe that Todd will be the next Design Star however because I think that is what the judges have been working on the whole show. Will could have been coached on his presentation abilities just as David was after he won. The judges bragged on Kim but what is she going to talk about when she can't come up with a design. I am very disappointed in the way this has gone. I know HGTV don't care what I think but I hope they will consider the two best designers on there Sparkle Josh and Will.

Thanks for doing this. I am really hoping for a better Design Star next year. I really hope HGTV is listening to us. They have removed so many shows lately that I believe really speak to the normal person, such as Design Remix,Freestyle and Get Color. It's hard for me to relate to shows where designers are spending thousands of dollars to create rooms. Does the rest of America really do this? To get back to Design Star-- I was so upset when they let Will go. I loved that room, and the girl loved it, Vern was wrong about the personal items, most teens would love to put their own touch on the room. Also I felt that Martha had it in for him, every time on a group challenge, she would say, "And what did you do in this space", like he sat on his hands. Kim's room was unfair, in the middle of no where and I think she did a great job, those people needed help the most and she did a lot for them. I think they are the people who watch HGTV the most and get ideas that are simple and cheap to do. I'm voting for Kim, I'm hoping she will have a show that will appeal to the "average" person and I think since she isn't a trained designer, she will be able to show us how we can incorporate those ideas into our own homes and rooms. I hope next years show will stop with the double elimination since we've waited so long for the show and the hype of it and now it's over! I also agree that next year the challenges should be of different styles, so we and the judges can see their true abilities. I could go on and on, but---Thanks for letting me sound off!!

I am really enjoying the show this year but none of the contestants has caught fire with me. Last year I was so eager to vote and have my choice win. I don't think I'll vote this year and probably wouldn't watch a show hosted by either finalist. That said, I hope the winner ends up with a show as enjoyable as "Color Splash" has been for me. Best of luck to both.

I love both Todd and Kim's comments. Todd your personality is a breath of fresh air. You are just a great, personable and funny person and you are a joy to watch on TV. I am 63 years old and I would watch any show you are on. You have my vote.

It is very hard for me to understand the degree of vitriolic feelings people seem to have for the show, the designers and the judges. I'm Kim's Dad. I hope she wins, of course. But I don't harbor any ill feelings about any of the other designers...and she doesn't either. She is honored to have come this far and I am very proud of her.
Unless you have had a chance to sit with and discuss the experience with any of the designers, you have no idea the stress, difficulty and pressure they had to endure. Even if you did, you'd find it difficult to grasp...only they know what it was like. I hope you realize that the show you see is the edited version of hundreds of hours of tape. We see a tiny percentage of what really happened. An opinion based on only a brief peek at reality is one not based on reality
I realize that everyone has an opinion and is free to express it. We are all entitled to our likes and dislikes, that's why there is such a wide variety of art, music, restaurants...and TV shows. When we don't care for something we don't have to hate it...we can ignore it. (I don't like cucumbers but when they pop up in salads I don't go balistic, I just don't eat them.)
So relax, enjoy the Hawaii challange and sit on the edge of your seat with me for the final results a week later. I know I'll be there and look forwared to meeting and congratulating all of the 11 designers. They all deserve my respect and I hope you'll give them yours.

To Iwatkins, I thank you for all your hard work on these blogs. You are doing a fantastic job. Last year Clive had the blog, and if I remember correctly not only did the fans write about DS but they also commented on Design to Sell, especially the Chicago team and how uninteresting they were. Well next thng you know Clive is doing the introduction and a few other voice overs on the Chicago episode. My point being that HGTV does listen to it's fan base and does care what we think.
We are all entitled to out opinoins, unfortunately for some it means being quite rude and judgemental about people we don't really know and see only for a fraction or what goes on during the show. I will admit that I have been disappointed and have had my dislike. But I've tried to keep an open mind and kept watching.
I also agree with some about seeing more individual challenges. I understand the need for team work and finding out who can work with others. But I would like to see what they can do on their own. Someone came up with an idea that they design in different styles. Great suggestion, just leave Modern out of it, as that is the judges favorite. It would'nt hurt to have the judges get out of their comfort zone.
I have a few ideas for challenges--so here they are..
1. Let's skik kitchens - on both seasons they have been totaly disasters. My idea would probably be just as distasterous, bu it is different and outside the box. This could be a team challenge or the presentation. An outside patio living, eating area. Possibilites are endless, I don't have to mention what they are.
2. Individual challenge - throw a curve ball and make a bedroom. The space is small so it would have to be a toddler or nursury or maybe an eat in area off the kitchen with a bistro set.
3. How about window dressing in a furniture store that has a large bank of windows. Bring out the paint cans and each has to do a different room. They would have to use the furniture in the store along with lighting and accessories. Of course they would have to shop for other elements that the furniture store did not have like rugs curtains art.
These are just a few ides, I'm sure the fan base can come up with more. Maybe HGTV will take a look at them. Thanks HGTV rocks.

It is so nice to hear from Kim and Todd. I loved to hear your views on the show and about each other. You both obviously really bonded with everyone and it is nice to hear. I loved all the "behind the scenes" commentary too! I agree with Todd, we need to see a "Design Star" DVD with all the fun things that happened behind the scenes. Great job to both of you. I can't wait to see this weeks show! Good luck!! You are both Winners in my book.

You've both gone through this competition with positivity and grace. You should be commended. Thanks for bringing some class to the show. I appreciate the high energy and passion for your work that you both bring to the show each week. I am eager for next Sunday. All the best to you both!

I decided early on that Robb was allowed to stay on the show because "the powers that be" knew he would rile viewers and create a fitting bad guy - unfortunately, he was able to stay so long that people with real talent were let go before him.
Robb reminded me a lot of JAG on this year's Next Food Network Star - he was abrasive, blamed others and that came back and bit them in the butt.
If there is only a six or eight week schedule for this type of contest - then cut down the number of participants. I hate it when after challenge someone is sent home. Viewers have no time to get to know that person and the range of his or her talents can't even be imagined. There should be a minimum of two shows - one group challenge and one individual challenge completed by all contestants before anyone is sent home.
I also am one of the home viewers who doesn't need to have a hyper active, over the top personality as a presenter. I CAN'T watch Rachel Ray - she makes me tired.
I think Josh J. and Will were dismissed way too early and vote that they are reunited on a series of specials.
Of the final two, I will most likely vote for Kim - it will be interesting and I'd like to see her after a few months of prep. Todd, I am afraid is too much of a one trick pony for my tastes.

I watch HGTV from the time they begin airing until the end, when they say good night. In my neighborhood they air 21 hrs a day. I enjoy the majority of the programing, only a few that I do not.
I was sorry to see DS end last year it was so exciting. This year was a great disappointment, and surprisingly, even angered me (something hard to do).
It would behoove the judges to watch what we see, at least. I do not know why they don't watch, but believe that is unfair to the participants. Observing only the final results excludes the real essence of the individual. One might get the answers correct on a test, but that should not be the entire evaluation.
In a Human Resources perspective, I would think it would be extremely important for the judges to be informed on every level of activity the audience sees, since .... well, that's what the audience will be "judging". Along those same lines, HR requires appropriate testing of an applicant. I think the test fell short this year. It did not cover the full spectrum of desireable qualities. Since hosting skills are one of the three qualifiers, more opportunity should be given to grow in that area during the contest.
Because of what I've learned on HGTV, I was able to start my own business a few years ago. I was general contractor, designer, decorator (interior and exterior) and retail display person. Quality and class were the adjectives I heard from most people.
HGTV gave me the confidence to "jump", because they had already taught me how to swim. Thank you HGTV !

Really not sure, if this is where, i say what i want to say, But really i agree with they don't have enough time to show there selfs, Also i watch HGTV everyday all day. I know almost everyone by their names, And i watched Design star last year and voted for David, But this year i have a problem with the show. I think that Martha is a bit racist, If you watch the show as i do, and more then once, She's always picking on Will, He can't do nothing right, and batting her eyes at Todd!! The last show you could see the look she gave Will i knew he was a gonner, and how she's laughs and smiles and say's sure i'd watch Todd, It makes me so mad i almost don't want to vote for Todd, but thing is, it isn't his fault. I think we should vote every week, we don't need judges. We should be the judge. Ok guess i feel better, hope someone else seen what i seen. Thanks

Om my gosh! I am so sad that Will is gone...however, I think that the remaining three were all great! Kim's passion is awesome! I love HGTV and this is my first Design Star experience and I can't get enough of Design Star...I am on edge with anticipation of next weeks show. Go get em!

I truly live for Sunday night's Design Star. I was amazed that some of the contestants don't seem to realize that even if they don't win their own show, sometimes HGTV actually hires them in other capacities such as Alice from last year. How you exit is very important. When Robb uttered "Fools", I was blown away. Will's exit was so beautiful. What a heart! I hope to see some of those gone come back. Just not Robb and Naraja

I anxiously, as in with baited breath, await Sunday's show. I am rooting for both of them and think it would be great if both Todd and Kim could either have their own shows or co-host a program together.
If I had to pick one of the tow it would be Lady Kim as she didn't clobber Robb when he tried, unsuccessfully, to make her into his version of a lesser than equal design partner.
throughout kim's fairness, honesty and maturity have graced my viewing experience.
Of course, Kim is a very talented newbie. How refreshing! Thanks Kim, thanks everyone!

How cool is it that Kim and Todd have written here? You both are awesome! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings! I am looking forward to Sunday's show.
Inspiration comes in many forms - you two are an inspiration to all of us who have dreams of stepping out and trying something new.

It's amazing the 'hosting' mumbo jumbo is so emphazised. Are today's technology abilities such a secret? And what are we fast forwarding on all the design shows??? Not the design results. All the annoying 'hosting'.... ps. I love Will!

Just to comment about the blogger who said that this is TV, not real life. I disagree. This is a show about a "real" HGTV design star. It is "real life" design, not pretend TV. I don't think these are actors....these people are really competing for the opportunity to become the next Candice Olden or Vern Yip, so to speak. In the "real" world, the ultimate success of a television show is measured by ratings and ratings are determined by viewers. So in reality TV (Design Star), the formation of a television show is being done in reverse. The viewers are saying what and who they like and want to see in a TV show before the show happens. Like I’ve said before, it’s unfortunate that we have to see all of the behind the scenes antics and be asked to pick a design star based on his or her talents and the judges don’t but, those are the rules and this is the feedback, like it or not.
I guess I’m saying that I agree with the comment about how people are getting to involved and ridiculously rude but this is what happens when you put up a blog and ask people what they think. Has anyone ever heard the saying, “Be careful about what you ask for…..you just may get it”?

i think todd is multi-talented and very innovative, his is gorgeous, and well spoken the perfect package. kim is enthusistic, smiley, and her smile would lead you to believe bouncey but her sylte is cleaner but she just need time this is a good venue for her talent. Joan stephan commentates and has other designers, the devine diva has electricain and hunky capenter so all is possible for kim. this is a good final 2 very different fdoing the same tasks. i do hope the final task will be egal. kitchen for kim and then a trailer in the mud.. really very challenging.

Hey lwatkins and the rest of you DesignStar fans! This has been an uncommonly interesting competition with such differing design styles and personalities. We saw amazing creativity and unique concepts. I'D REALLY LIKE TO SEE TWO DESIGN STARS IN PARTNERSHIP CO-HOSTING THEIR SHOW TOGETHER: WILL AND TODD!!! Think about it...Todd's over-the-top structural designs and Will's fabulous eye for color and detail! They have such a comfortable working rapport with each other too (not to mention their sincere personal demeanors). It would REALLY work. Maybe Kim could be a guest designer on their show. Listen up, DesignStar producers...A show starring BOTH Will and Todd would blow the lid off the ratings. What about it??

I've loved 2007 DEsign Star - always have, and will continue to watch HGTV . . . BUT, I won't be voting!

WILL! Will! WILL!I think Will was the best designer and he should have won. He seemed to be very down to earth and genuine. I would have enjoyed his show. Next year I hope the judges will consider good design work over presentation skills. I'm sure HGTV could have given him a presentation coach.

******Debbie, check for your posts under the "Episode 6" blog. I think you will find them there! Thanks for blogging! lwatkins :o) *******
I have posted to this blog on two previous occasions and have never been able to find my comments. I will never stop watching HGTV. I have taped your segments before the technology of the DVR on VHS tapes.
Everyone had so much to contribute in their own design personalities, depending on what type of program they are to host. Todd could very well handle a "Sweat Equity" with his energy, but I do believe from the first picks Martha may have put a nasty taste in our mouths when she affirmed she would definitely watch his show even before the final eleven were chosen.
I definitely believe that Robb's attacks on his team members, especially Will, had an impact on their creativity and confidence.
Josh and Will had it together from the very first episode. If you take a look at each episode's synopsis, Will and Josh have had their names in the top designs. Will has worked well with every team member and I have never seen Will and Josh complain.
Wayne Newton's kitchen was not done by Robb, his mistakes were astronomical as far as I am concerned and given to his carpenters to fix. Sorry Todd but that rotating platform was not design. Will saved the episode with his design. Kim could have done much better if she wasn't running around crazy for Robb.
Overall, everyone did great with what they were given. Candace Olson is the greatest but she achieves this with the time to gather fabrics, paint colors and her inspiration on paper before she tackles a project. No one had this opportunity but Josh, Will and Kim did achieve good design with what was given to them.
Good luck to Todd and Kim. Will and Josh, please come back. Your personalities are the greatest. Who could not feel comfortable with that big smile of Will's. There had to be a reason he was included from the beginning.
From one southerner to another, down here in South Louisiana, we may have many college degrees, but the "South" has people with the biggest hearts from Paula Dean to Alice Fakier to Will Smith.
Will be looking for you on HGTV. I am sure of this..

"I agree with most that it was difficult at the begining of the show. This season's pick of designers was hard to get excited about. But as the show went on it became obvious who had the passion, creative talent, personality, integrity, character and ambition. TODD. I took the time to check out Todd's website and really get to know him. What a guy! So diverse in everything he does. I think most are indimadated by his genuine flair for life and his God given talents. I would give anything to spend time with him in hopes that even half of who he is would rub off on me. I don't believe Todd is in this for the competition as much as he is there to take the opportunity to succeed. Todd will succeed even if he does not win. He goes after everything life has to offer him and certainly does not need a TV show to be a "Design Star." I believe the judges see this too."

Hi Everyone
We are down to two "designers." I really loved Will, but he sort of did the same design over and over. Even though I liked what he did, he did not have experience and/or education, to be inspired with new ideas. But, my hats off to him. Without any other design experience, he'll do fine if he has a client that likes blocks or horizontal strips of vibrant color. Will is great with color. His clean designs are very geometrical and weren't always warm and cozy. I think he's a great guy. About the two that are remaining,....Kim has more design experience. She really listens to her clients. Her project was for a family in WV....She knew how to "educate" them enough without getting out of their comfort zone. People are different; doing appropriate design using form and function and color, she hit the bull's eye. She does however, needs to know more about space design. But, that can be said about Todd. Todd is vibrant and not afraid of stepping outside the box. I think his main problems would be that he will go way over the top...not all designs have to be "Awesome"...e.g., he needs to focus more on function and also determine focal points of each room and tend to design around it. I think that every project should start with an inspiration piece; a vase, painting, a piece of clothing, colors from their garden whatever. Think if there was more time with the clients and designing the room, the clients and/or the designer should have one thing from which to jump. I think for the both of them...they should produce a space planning .... using computer software or sketch/rendering and a simple color/fabric board would be wonderful...The most important tool is a space plan with all the dimensions with proper scale and clearances.

I adore Will's designs, and more than any of the 11, I would want him in my own house more than any other. I also *LIKE* the way Will hosts, and would *never* miss a show that he did. He comes across (to me, anyway) as more real and genuine than any other TV personality I have ever seen. From a design standpoint, I neither like Kim nor Todd's designs, however I would kind-of like to see Todd doing really some strange and novel things with spaces indoor and outdoor. Maybe only 10% of what he does would actually be useful, but for the person who WOULD find it useful, it would be a good thing to have available. Finally, I am no big fan of negativity or personal bashing - but I am going to share my honest opinion. I love Vern and like Candice. However, to my mind saying that Martha is biased is like saying that the sky is blue on a cloudless day. I do not like to make "I will never watch again" threats, but my honest opinion here is that if Martha returns to judge season 3, then I will not watch it. Every time the camera pans on her and she opens her mouth, it is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. I just don't need the annoyance in my life. I love DesignStar, but I'm sorry, in my opinion Martha needs to be canceled! GIVE A WILL SHOW!!!

Kim and Todd ~
Wow!!! Thanks so much for posting! Kim, you shared thoughts that just seemed really sincere and confirmed what I have felt all along...you are as classy and fabulous as you are talented! Todd, your stories were absolutely hysterical! Thanks for taking the time to tell us a little bit about each of the designers.
Best of luck to both of you! Thanks again for taking the time to write in.
Sincerely,
Russell

What a prince of a man Will is!! He was eliminated and talked about how his life has been changed by meeting and working with Bridget. Not a word about the judges' decision. Wow!! I don't know many people who have that level of humility. I am so impressed with him, on that point alone.
As for the final two, I have to admit I'm voting for and rooting for Kim. I agree with all the comments about her being HGTV's Rachel Ray. Todd's designs are just too far out for me, and I suspect for most of mainstream America.
HGTV, please cut out the double eliminations. We viewers hardly got a chance to know some of the designers. This season went far too fast for me.

Hey, lwatkins!
I wanted to write to you to say 'thank you' for running Design Dish, and for your kind words about this season of Design Star. I've been reading your blog and thinking about all of this so much that I felt I might as well just write in and share my perspective. This season has polarized so many fans, and as a fan myself, I wanted to tell you how I'm feeling about it all.
What to say, what to say... that hasn't already been said on these boards! ;)
First, I'd like to say 'thank you' to all of the passionate design fans, the cast and crew of Design Star, and of course HGTV! It is just a tremendous honor to have participated in this competition with a group of hugely talented designers, and I can't help pinching myself each Sunday as I watch our experiences together unfold for America. I've learned so much from my fellow finalists (and not just design insights either -- ALL 10 are truly amazing individuals), and I feel blessed to be in the final two! There really aren't words to express how much this means to me - living out my dream is thrilling, overwhelming, bitter sweet (seeing friends get cancelled), nerve-wracking, and just plain amazing!
Obviously, this year's show has been very different than last (those were some BIG shoes to fill), and we've watched some of our favorites go home, but I think that it's safe to say that all eleven of us did our very best all along the way, and gave it our best shot. I know that I put my heart and soul into this competition, and having been a huge fan of last year's show, I will always be honored and proud to have earned my place amongst my fellow designers!
I'm so thankful to all of the fans who continue to tune in each week, and I really want to encourage them to watch the final 2 episodes as well. Todd is a genuinely good guy with an amazing 'out of the box' approach to design, as well as life. I'm honored to be in the final 2 with a man who is fearless about going after his dreams, and lives life to the fullest each day. As for myself, I came into this competition as a wide-eyed enthusiast, and I've been able to learn and grow with each challenge. I've always believed in my own creativity, and I've never subscribed to the theory that a lack of experience equals a lack of talent! My belief in myself is what lead me to apply for season 2, and I hope that my experience inspires others to do the same for season 3. I can tell you that putting my capabilities and passion into action feels absolutely incredible -- If you have a dream, go for it, no matter what it is. If you want it, you gotta' put it out there -- I did, and I'm in the final 2! Never, ever give up on yourself!
I'm deeply proud of my work for the final challenge in Hawaii, and I hope that it makes those people who've been supporting me proud as well. I can't wait for Sunday to come, and to see what America thinks of my vision. I can only pray that it marks the beginning of an amazing new career for me! (I want to tell you that I am so heartened by your reference to Rachel Ray, since I actually talked about her in some of my entrance interviews! She wasn't a professional chef, but she had drive, spunk and talent. She has been an inspiration to me, and I've kept her in my mind throughout this experience. I'm honored that you'd liken me to her, and I can only hope to be able to to follow in her career footsteps!)
Thanks for letting me share my thoughts, and thank you again for all of your hard work on this blog.
Long Live Design Star!!!!!!!!! :)

Behind the Scences!!!
I have to tell you folks that, HGTV should put together a two hour episode of behind the scenes Design Star footage. So much comedy and one of a kind moments took place that I wanted to give you guys some idea of what actually took place behind our 30 story Penthouse Bungalow. What a better way to do this than tell what my favorite moments were from each contestant and possibly some crew members as well.
It all started when we all pressed the penthouse button in the elevator, we reach the top of Vegas and walked out and into our new home. This place was located in the Las Vegas Country Club Estates and dominated the skyline. It was actually in my opinion better than being on the strip itself..we were approximately 1/4 mile from the strip, so we could see the whole thing, end to end...and looked down to an elite golf course.
There was seven in one bedroom and right off of that one the other four shacked up. Nobody was sure how it happened but, Sparkles, Christina, Adriana and Robb shared that one while the rest of us crammed into the other. These were not normal bedrooms..plenty of space yet when you have seven in a room, everything gets exaggerated.
Where do I begin the comedy???
The first night, according to the rules, we could not sleep in our beds if they were not made..once "time" was called for the challenges we could not alter our designs in any way...period. Yes even our beds. After we realized that we could not make our beds, we didn't have any sheets anyways, we slept on the floor with our clothes piled on top of us. Pretty interesting for our first night. At that moment, 2am, we became a solid team of eleven. Within seconds we new that we were all in this together and that it was going to be a team effort. I felt that in this moment we all became really good friends, regardless of what was edited for good television later on.
It was like any other large family household, water supply goes way down, no hot water, people snore, smell good, bad, and miss being..well...home.
You could tell that every single person in this home deserved to be a Design Star for numerous reasons. All had amazing personalities and came from very diverse backgrounds with a full list of life achievements.
My first feeling that I knew I was no longer home is when I tried to fall asleep. Cute little adorable Kimmy, who worked really hard that day, (thankfully because she was on my team), fell asleep first. What I realized within seconds of lying down, is that that woman snores like a lumber mill just opened up four feet away. I was sooo jealous that she could just shut down like that, obviously comfortable in her new environment. For the remaining weeks in the home I had to gather small soft objects to throw like hand grenades at the metal dragonfly winged sculpture next to her to get her to stop snoring in the middle of the night. It was quite hysterical. She was always polite, apologetic in the morning and asked that I just get up, walk over to her and gently shove her to stop and that she would be OK with that. Well folks, that lasted about a half hour before I started to plan my assault on that wing sculpture next to her midmorning..getting up at 4:45 am was becoming far to difficult as the days passed. Kim was always puzzled in the morning when she would find Wills clean socks, or wooden nickles, and shrapnel from the days construction next to her every morning...poor sculpture never had a chance.
Will...He was soo funny and always had random hilarious stories that made us all laugh for days on end. Yet his natural ability to bring us all together through his talents of cooking and story telling made us all surround him constantly. One night while we waited for his award winning marinated steaks to be done cooking, he joined a few of us hanging around on the half pipe for a glass of wine. He was all excited to jump into another story and just walked up and said.."Man..I have never been on one of these half pipes before" and just walked up in his penthouse socks holding his freshly poured beverage and just ATE IT on the half pipe slipping with the first step he touched trying to climb up and landed on his back hard...the whole time he was smiling and NEVER spilled a drop of his fresh juice. He jumped up not expecting this, of course, and slowly made his way to the top to join us in our little camp. Sad thing is that he went down right in front of a camera and they never showed it...please HGTV..shows us this bail..no one was hurt and it was quite comical, even for Will...Funniest home videos is fairly successful, give him the chance to be on two shows.
Sparkles...well Sparkles didn't always have his famous name folks...and in fact he didn't really like his name either until later on. It was not because "Robb" called him Sparkle first either. He just wasn't sure of it and I think he may have thought for two seconds that we were making fun of him. Well I asked him politely once in front of everyone, if he liked it or not and he looked up and slowly said ..yeees! Sparkle you are! He just kept bringing the hardcore bling and it stuck.
When Sparkles came up last into that first room where we all met for the first time, I thought and felt we were all pawns in his new DS show. He had Luis V bags piled ten high and walked in with his witty humor and said "Am I in the right place"? nuf said...we were all in the wrong place, he owned it.
We then looked over to "Scott" and said is that all your luggage? (pointing to an espresso maker).
He thought he would be nice and make whoever needed one in the morning....well I'm not sure how one can possibly fit seven shots into one little cup, yet Scott made the strongest tiny cup of coffee mankind could ever create. The military should patent this and use for self defense of alien war craft. I made the mistake of downing one the first morning and was so high on caffeine for three days I could not comprehend what was happening. It was hard to believe that Scott slept like a baby at night. Yet how could this be?! I understand now that his only mistake in the competition, was having six of these shots right before the 99 cent store challenge. America needs to know that he couldn't stop folks..you don't stop when your running on jet fuel and god given talent.
Jet fuel...hmmmm..kinda reminds me of "Robb".
Does anyone remember that guy? I know only four people in America who liked him, yet I have to stick to my guns folks...he is really one of the nicest, most sincere, caring guys in all of downtown, side alleyway Winnemucca , Nevada truck stop. No seriously...I talked to "Robb" for hours on end and had life altering/enhancing conversations with him. Then I found out his down fall. I jumped into his van by mistake on the Wayne Newton challenge and looked down as to why my feet were not touching the floor and noticed over five MONSTER energy drinks on the floor. Yes the 32 ounce ones...and this was just from the trip from our home to the ranch. That means he must of had over 160 ounces of nuke bomb caffeine by 9 in the morning! nuf said...his problem wasn't being a team player, his problem was that he was not human. No one...can call themselves a human being after consuming that amount of 7 eleven crack drink. He has since gone into monster rehab and is slowly crawling his way back into our civilization and talking to people nicely for many weeks now...good luck Robb and we look forward to the new you!
Lost civilizations...what about "Lisa"?
It is really too bad we did not get to see much of our dear "Lisa". She was a design in herself..did you know she made her entire wedding dress out of wax paper and it looked better than most wedding dresses I've ever seen. Lisa was also great at putting her outfits together in the morning. She would put layers of different fabrics and textures on and looked like a rock star before most of us even got up. She has so much energy and wild ideas that it would have been nice to see her blow up something other than a penthouse garage door. Only the good go young.
"Adriana", while kickin' butt and making things happen on the show, had a young one at home waiting for her. Adriana was just too good for her britches, and a tool belt was holding them up most of the time. I don't know what her Austrian husband does or is into yet, he has no worries about fixing, or calling anyone to fix anything in their house, that's for sure. She is such a stellar craftswoman and she hand builds and makes almost all of her designs in her and other peoples homes. I was actually very surprised she didn't move on through the 99 cent challenge. I felt that she was calm and quiet around the house so that none of us could snake her good ideas and way of going about designs. She was truly very creative.
Hmmm calm and quite... does this ring a bell? Yes our lovely "Christina". I almost couldn't believe how nice she is. She would, at the start of everyday, read a letter from her husband about how much he loves her and how wonderful she is and that her two boys missed her dearly, especially her youngest one who wondered the house slowly saying "mommy,...Toddrampin1 mommy" all the time. Her husband was obviously as nice as her. Christina represents love and respect in the most caring way possible. She is a true, genuine and sincere person. Keep on wake boarding Christina!
Go green and stay green"Josh". When you almost removed my head with your table saw antics, that was my favorite moment hands down...No wait...it has to be the time when we played frisbee in the house, while skating and just tearing apart your hot pink pillow collection on the kidney bean lounge. I had soo much fun talking about how you made the nationals team and just rapping about college experiences...It was a cool segment of video shorts of you and I playing in the house and having fun. I am looking forward to seeing you save this earth of ours with your go green mentality and design style. Fifth gear full throttle huh...what? no more motocross airs?
"Neraj" America is waiting to see your pictures of your model daughter...where can talent scouts find those? She will have a good time in the summer Olympics dominating the water polo scene. There was something about your "I don't care attitude" that made me want to care more about not caring...What I do care about is the next Club experience you are going to design for America to enjoy. Where is it going to be? What heavy style are we going to see? I want the the mother-daughter team representing the Palm Springs area to bring us some House...(house music). Is your music playing loud out there in the desert? Your personality was in Vegas. I look forward to seeing you In da club.
Please, HGTV, give us our Penthouse comedy skits that unfolded on the Vegas skyline with all the contestants unedited goodness in a solid two hour DVD. Give us our House, as it was, in all it's unfiltered comedic genius. It would definitely be entertaining...

I just wanted to say how much I LOVE Vern Yip. When he was on Trading Spaces, he was usually the only designer who got it really right and did a fabulous job every time. I instantly had to look him up on the internet to find out more about his work. Each time I hear what he has to say on the show, I have to agree with him. I'm sure someone out there doesn't agree with me but that's the way it is...how would it be in the world if we ALL agreed on EVERYTHING??? Whatever happened to CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. I sure hope all your bosses out there don't give criticism the way you do! If you get that bent out of shape over how things are done or are so unhappy with the show...nobody is making you watch it. PEACE!

Todd needs to keep his shirt on. He tries to portray being 21 years old and what is he 48ish? You have got be to kidding with the skate board ramp in the one room. What a joke? I am sorry but he is not a teenager anymore and Kim seems to be the professional and better designer. Hey Todd be cool and back to the beach DUDE. Kim best of luck and congrats on your new show.

that kind of message is usually an automated response disguised to look like a real email from a real person using a standard text and signature. then the email one sent gets dumped into a queue for a possible read and a low-chances response.
businesses that get a lot of email do that all the time.

Thank you for all the work you've done in managing the blog! And thanks to the folks at HGTV for creating this opportunity for the fans! That said, I'm glad to hear that the HGTV folks are paying attention. Reading back through the last blog and then through this one, the overwhelming positive feelings and support for Will is incredible. He certainly deserves it. I also agree with many who think a pairing of Will and Sparkle Josh would make a great show.
I'm very disappointed in some of the 'judging' though. When Cynthia hung her head at the end, I thought she should be ashamed. Each week, she and Vern made strong points about functionality, yet on seeing Todd's 'TV' room, she stated that it wasn't that important not to see the tv, even though that was the entire point of the room for the clients. Todd seems like a decent person with lots of enthusiasm and creativity, but his designs are not great and lack color balance and functionality. I'm still not sure about Kim, but think she may have what it takes, and will continue to improve.
On the way to work this morning, I thought that the designers, judges and fans would be better served by more individual challenges and better planned contests. I was thrilled to see another blogger wrote in with the same idea I had-the contestants have to create a similar type room in a specific style each week. Then we'd really see the best of the best and the designers would have a level playing field.
I'll be on vacation in the coming week, but am hoping that I can catch the last challenge while on the road. Can't stop now! Go Kim!
HGTV - PLEEEEEASE try Will in his own show.

Sorry, you lost my vote when Will was booted out. He truly had more talent for design than Kim seems to present. The mobile home was the tip of the iceberg. My father used to sell mobile homes years ago and some of them were absolutely beautiful inside! Maybe next season I will tune in but I've lost that design star bug for now.
PS. I do believe that Todd would do well overall. He is talented and adds "extreme" life to the show...

I agree with Chular that some of the folks posting on this blog and the the threads need to take their passion and energy and focus it towards something really important. As much as I enjoy this show, it is only a show and the world is not likely to change because of it. There is no need to hate any of the participants. Everyone who participated in the show was a winner and (with one exception) they all seem to realize that. They received a tremendous amount of publicity for each of their careers. The two individuals (Sparkle Josh and Will) who people seem to be so angry about their elimination have both written in and said how much they enjoyed it. Neither of them seem to be angry or bitter. To me, Will enjoyed the designing much more than the hosting part so maybe this was God's way of enlarging his business. And if someone doesn't offer Josh an opportunity to "Sparkle" I will be surprised.
So, please, please, quit posting nasty things about Kim and Todd. Do as our mother's said, "If you can't say something nice, say nothing at all."
My best wishes to both finalists.

One of the criticisms I have of this year's show is the inequity of assignments among the contestants. Will and Todd each had easy access to city stores and modern furnishings, but Kim is lucky she came up with what she did shopping in such a rural area and that could be some of the reason her rooms seemed sparse. I hate to see all the citicism about how she furnished the house when the shopping is so unfair. It was the same situation when they were competing by designing a living room vs. designing a kitchen -- not equal in any fashion!!! Last year I knew before the final show that I was going to vote for David. This year I still don't know who I will vote for because I don't have a feel for what Kim and Todd can do under equal conditions. I hope the person in charge of production of next year's show learns something from this year's show -- IF NOT, MAYBE HIS SHOW WILL BE CANCELLED11111

To Delilah: The rumor that Todd will have Robb on his TV show if he wins is NOT TRUE. I read Todd's blog on his website and he asked Robb to help him with a different project altogether, AND he also asked other DS contestants. Robb was the only one who had agreed to do it at that point. Honestly, Todd will not have THAT much say about who will be his helpers, should he win.

Good work in your blog this evening. "I loved your 10 ways I am blogging" My Family has talked me into trying out for season 3 myself. I am working on my application as we speak. You never know unless you try. I love HGTV. Remember one mans trash is another's treasure. We all come in diff packages.

The winner of the Design Star competition will be given their own TV show, but there's nothing that says HGTV can't add another show to their line up. I suggest a seasonal special once a quarter, with 4 or 5 fan-selected designers from seasons 1 and 2 provided with a gradiose challenge that no one else is doing -- like taking a huge vacant space and designing a home for child war victims. Something that is worthwhile and not a fluff assignment. I'm sure just asking HGTV fans for project suggestions would be a huge success and would build an even larger fan base because what these fabulous people would be working together as a team would be in support of something that really MATTERS in real life (unlike reality TV). While I did not watch the Design Star show last year, I'm sure there are just as many fan favorites from that season as there are this year. HGTV could have a field day screening their huge fan base for recommended designers. At this point, Sparkle Josh, Will and Christina would be my top 3 choices. And of course, Clive would be the ultimate host to pull it all together!

Dear Lwatkins:
Thanks for the passion and the blog.
Dear Helena:
We're a nation at war, so we need an even tempered designer who will elevate our behavior (I'm paraphrasing)? While I admire yor patriotism, and deeply appreciate your husband's service, that statement was way over the top. It's a design show, not C-Span. That said, I agree that Dancing With the Stars voting rules would serve this show well. I also support the idea of rotating at least one judge.
Dear Potteryfarm (responding to a blog about 4 shows back):
I never said I liked Kitty Bartholomew's design; I said she'd make a good judge because she's actually been a star on this network (along with Joan Steffend, Chris Casson Madden, Susie Cohello, and some others you don't see anymore that I think would have made better judges)... and yes, I like tool box shows, although my HGTV fav's are "Buy Me", "What You Get For The Money", and "Dream House."
Dear Todd & Kim: Good Luck!

I've watched shows on HGTV for several years now. I have my favorites and there are some I don't watch. It's a matter of personal choice.
I have enjoyed Design Star during both seasons and I know for sure that all of the finalists, 10 last year and 11 this year, are far better at design than I am. That's one of the reasons I like the show. I also enjoy trying to predict who will be eliminated and who continues.
Now...the real turn off are the bloggers who choose to chop up any contestant that is not "the" one they have decided should be the winner. Ther were many who wanted terrible things to happen to Robb. Even some carried it to Todd. I'm sure Robb is a great person, he made a big mistake in his decision on how to approach the competition. He chose to approach it as if it were a sporting event where domination and intimidation is the path to winning. I don't believe he runs his life that way.
Todd is true to his lifestyle. He lives it to its fullest and truely wants everyone to enjoy it with him. He is gifted with true creativity.
Kim comes across as a very considerate and caring person who is design savy.
Sparkle Josh is a real class act who I would like to call a friend if given the opportunity. Will comes across the same way but not as funny.
These people have worked their tails off in this contest. Give them credit for trying something you wouldn't do.

I think this blog is great. It gives lots of people a chance to state their opinions. I reviewed last years show and there were as many double eliminations as there were this year just in different sgements. I noticed too a vast similarity of personalities and I was wondering if anyone else did... At the beginning I wrote down who I felt were similar and guess what I picked them right on it was weird. For each personality I picked to match they were eliminated at the same time. I picked will who was similar to Tym so I felt he would be cancelled and he was. Kim is alot like ALice in her personality too and guess what she is still here. And of course the shirtless wonders... well what can I say.....PS I compared Temple to Robb anyone else agree....
thanks

I'm a fan! Woo hoo! What a fantastic show! Go go go! All the contestants are class acts and all contributed uniquely to the show!
I hope for a Design Star 3. It would be fantastic to see a "pre-show" look at what the Design Star 2 contestants are doing after being "cancelled"... have they leveraged their experiences? How did Will's life change after giving the gorgeous gal on wheels a fabulous new bedroom? Will Sparkle Josh have Sparkle appearances on HGTV shows honing his endearing compassion towards good cause work? Is sweet Christina keeping in touch with any of her new found friends? Feed our addiction please!!!

A big yes to a Christmas special hosted by Will & Josh. No, I do not think that it is to late for this year! If HGTV is really serious about making and keeping the fans happy then bring on
"Make Christmas Sparkle, hosted by Will & Josh"
HGTV we know that you can make this happen!

Please - I hope someone from HGTV is listening. Bring back all of these incredible designers on future episodes of my favorite show "Designers Challenge" (where 3 designers present their ideas to a homeowner). Many of these people deserve a spot on upcoming shows - I would hate to see them do all that work on this competition and not be heard from again. Each one is so creative, but in different ways that have been very entertaining to watch.

I dont believe that it is rigged, but I think that the judges need to see more than the finished products. Rob should have been gone in week one or two instead of making it to the final four. He was a user and abuser and covered his own rear by putting others down. I dont have anything against Kim or Todd except that I do not connect with Kim whatsoever. She just does not come across well to me. And Todd may be a talented designer, but I will not watch a show with him. He sounds like a male valley girl circa 1983. It grates like nails on a chalkboard. I feel that any number of the other designers would have made far better choices and that at times the judges are more esoteric in their judgements than what the common public would care for. Sorry, I have watched both years of DS but I will not vote next week and I will not watch a show with either of these people.
Posted by Janie – September 5, 2007 7:41 PM
I haven't read all the blogs or comments so apologies for repeating what I'm sure has already been said.
If the goal of Design Star is to choose one star, there shouldn't be so many group projects. Those, combined with the double eliminations, did not give the viewers or the judges a chance to see enough of the contestants' skills.
Robb's appearance was a waste. For all of his bragging I never saw much talent from him. He thinks way too highly of himself and has no people skills. Not a good candidate for hosting a show. Nasty people are not entertaining; he should have been booted sooner.
I don't think it would be a good idea to let viewers vote weekly. Not enough have sufficient knowledge about design skills to make good choices. It would just become a popularity contest.
And anyone who bashes Vern really doesn't understand what design is about. He sounds judgmental because he really knows what he's talking about and isn't easy on the contestants. Otherwise, they wouldn't learn anything from the experience.
I hope HGTV finds a way to incorporate the Will and Sparkle Josh combo into a show. They made a great team.

When Todd wins, I have a great idea for his show
Extreme Design, perhaps focusing on cutting edge designs for loft space since that is so hot now. He has such innovative designs and vision, I would watch and I'm 60 years old.

I love ths program. I like Todd and Kim. I think Todd would make the better TV host/designer, but I am totally turned off by men like David and Todd who won't keep a shirt on. Maybe I am not "hip" on what sells, but even David on his little video today HAD to show off his abs, tatoos and muscles. What's with this? Is this a California thing? I don't think I need a design show based on acrobatics or body shapes, sizes, etc. Will had the most heart, but needed a voice coach. No one but Paula Deen can use that southern accent. Grammar must be concise and the host needs to sound literate. I don't think Kim could convince me to watch the show! Better designers next year?

I have never commented on a Blog before, but had to step in to say something about all these nasty blogs.
I have really enjoyed watching the show and think that all the designers are really talented. I have to say that I can't believe the comments of some of you viewers/bloggers. The amount of anger and judgement you have toward these people is ridiculous and there is obviously deeper issues than "Design Star" in your life.
I am actually writing because I have known Todd most of my life and am getting very upset with some of the comments some of you have said about him. I feel like I have to stick up for Todd because he is one of the most sincere, honest, humble and incredible people I've ever known. He has a heart of gold and treats everyone with so much love and respect. It's sad to see that some people have taken his love and passion for life the wrong way.
I was a professional athelete until I became paralyzed 5 years ago. Todd, being the incredible friend he is and not seeing any obstacles, continues to take me out hiking, biking and surfing again. I am so grateful to him for that. His innate enthusiasm and passion for life is contagious and wonderful to be around. I am proud to be his friend.
Todd works hard for everything in his life and deserves any and all good things that come his way. HGTV would be lucky to have him as their next "Design Star".

First, I am so THRILLED that Vern is coming back with a design show. I have not seen one of his designs that was not absolutely beautiful. I love his clean lines and uncluttered look. OK, now back to Design Star. I agree that Will was probably the best designer among the three, but unfortunately, his nervousness as a host did him in. Kim, I look forward to seeing your show. I just know you are the one to host your own design show. Todd is innovative and with each challenge goes over the top with one element. However, not everyone has his daring and most would prefer a little more conventional design. And, I think I would tire of his overenthusiastic demeanor. Kim, I'm rooting for you, girl!

WOW, rosie flores blogs for WILL and SPARKLE JOSH. that's tremendous. you are such a great musician, lady! as for design star, I would have to leave my vote for KIM, however. Fact is, she is in the FINAL II. That is reality. She has the presentation skills. True, carpet and fabric don't work in a coal miner's lifestyle, but that's what the family wanted. plus, they live in a mobile home. how does one install hard wood flooring on particle board? she DOES have a budget, and hgtv does edit. Anyway, that's my feeling about the FINAL II. Kim, you deserve to win now that you have made it this far. and, to rosie flores, say "hi" to DAVE ALVIN for me! sorry I missed the trainride into Mexico.

Thanks for your great comments. I agree. People need to stop commenting such Rude and Mean comments about people they don't even know. Todd has only been extremely nice to everyone on the show, then entire time, and has proved to be an amazing designer, whether you like his style or not. He's NEVER gotten into any of the drama and doesn't deserve to be bashed by rude viewers. Also, Kim is a really nice person too and maybe she doesn't have the best design skills, she's still really good.
Both Todd and Kim deserve to be in the Top Two and they deserve everyone's respect.
If you find the show and life so unbairable, then don't watch it and save us from your miserable thoughts. NO ONE wants to hear a bunch of Bitter Viewers.

I wrote a comment on yesterday, but it was not published. I didn't use any profanity, did not make any untrue statements, but I never saw my comments posted. I was thoroughly disgusted with the obvious bias of Martha toward Will. She consistently blasted him from the first show on his "lack of communication skills." I disagree with her - his communication skills were very clear - he is a genuine, caring and yes very talented designer. No, he is not a "pretty boy", but his presence is what the average viewer wants. If you look at the ratings of the designs, his was rated #1.
I was so happy to see Robb get booted off. He was the exact opposite of Will. And, he tried to make it appear that Will did nothing on HIS tacky wedding reception design. If it hadn't been for Will and Todd getting the room set up and trying to make the adjustments for his lack of measurements, he wouldn't have even gotten as far as he did.
I would hope HGTV powers to be recognize that it's time to change judges - especially Martha. She's not too intelligent - she let her biases be very obvious. That's not judging, that's being petty.
I'm sure that Will will be okay. I'd have him design for me any day. And, I hope that this time my comments will be published.
Barb, I never received your post. Technology isn't perfect! Hope this one posts for you! Thanks for writing in. lwatkins

I am an avid HGTV viewer. I followed last year's Design Star with bated breath. I am TERRIBLY disappointed with this year's contest. I wouldn't watch a show hosted by either finalist. I thought Sparkle Josh was one of the few that had a chance at a show worthy of watching. Todd may have talent but who is the target audience? He drives me crazy and makes no connection. He'd be about like that hostess on 'Bad, Bad Bath'. Can't stand to watch it! Kim seems very sweet but, for me, lacks any carisma and has questionable design skills. Bring back Sparkle Josh!
Posted by Robin – September 5, 2007 4:37 PM
Will was so sweet when he lost. He is a good person. Kim to me is the next design star. Her personality just blooms when she is on the air and she seems to feel so comfortable in front of the camera. I personally liked her rustic design probably because I come from a rural part of Maine. I would have loved to have had my living/dining rooms redone with the same colors and style Kim used.
Posted by Char – September 5, 2007 4:02 PM
Sigh, thanks for the cheerleading. Now let's get down to business.
I stand by my opinion that Will should have been kept and that Todd and Kim are not fit to have their own design shows, yet. They each have some serious "growing" to do, Kim as a designer and Todd as a quieter calmer more professional personality. I don't want to see them doing that growing on camera and would not watch either's shows, and I'm clearly not alone in this opinion.
That doesn't mean that I don't wish them well. I do, but they're not ready for prime time, yet.
Always "yet".
And I stand by my opinion that stylists and fashionistas should not constitute 2/3 of the judging panel for an interior design contest. I don't care how important these ladies are in their trade, and I'm not impressed, BTW, as a lot of that is politics. What I care about is the appropriateness of the presence of this kind of person on this panel, which I and others, apparently, believe should have been staffed by designers with pertinent interior design AND television experience.
Kenneth Brown, Lisa La Porta, to name only two. Don't be fooled by the latter's coincidental "staging" concentration with Designed to Sell, she's a fine designer with remarkable camera presence. She knows the interior design and hosting drill. So does Brown, to say the least. Either would be a great judge. Those two with Vern would be a really good panel. And they're just the first two who came to mind. There are others.
And let's face it, it hadn't been for David's clear runaway skills, charm, and brilliance, and endless future 'possibilities' (this is one worth watching grow from a start position of "outstanding, it's like watching like a great novelist whose first novel was jim-dandy), the "fans" would have been in a complete fit LAST year because of iffy choices. He wasn't one. He was an easy choice, and an obvious one, and even a badly setup panel could see that. THIS choice was not an easy one from the gitgo, and the problems with the panel member choices have revealed themselves with considerable vigor. They've got to unplug this setup and rebuild the series before they start season 3.
So do the folks who run Top Chef and The Next Food Network Star. This particular kind of contest is bound to have problems. There's nothing in the least wrong with that unless they are not identified and resolved.
:)

OK,,,,wow great blog. thank you.
Does ANYONE out there not get it yet that the judges DO NOT see all of the drama we see? If they did it would make their jobs soooo much harder and would make the outcome a lot less fair. Just the fact that Robb managed to last so long....right up until he revealed his ugly nature in front of the judges...kudos to KIM for pushing him there. They only see the finished product each week and that is what they judge on.
I think this show is far superior in every way to all of the other "reality contests". I think the judges are fabulous warm caring people...I can't wait to see Vern's new show. Yes some of what goes on is edited in ways so as to generate some kind of suspense. Whatever.....it IS TV not real life. I think Todd is a strange but very good person and KIM, as you said is in the Rachel Ray category of real life down to earth people. I think the contest is right where it should be and I LOVED Sparkle Josh,,,,but finally had to admit to myself that he is a world class shopper with great taste but has
problems with an actual design....or maybe he just does not work well under pressure. He will be around somewhere you can bet on that...HGTV...they are smart people.

This my first time blogging but I have enjoyed reading all the blogs this season. Seems like all the HGTVer's have spoken. They are not happy with how the elimination process was done. If you have your loyal veiwers telling you they will not watch a designers show, as alot have said about Robb and Todd,...well hello...get rid of that designer. Kim will probably win because she is the lesser of two evils..not that they both aren't talented in their own way. Kim can change the looks of a room with paint, funiture and accessories but doesn't change the DESIGN of the room. Anyone can do that. The carpet in the trailer in W.V., bad choice! And the placement of the furniture was neither cozy nor functional, although I'm sure the owners were very happy to get their living and dining areas "spruced" up. She has a great personality and is very personable on camera. Maybe she just lacks experience. Todd on the other hand is off the wall! A ramp in a main living space, funiture smashed and nailed to the wall, furniture put on a lazy susan in the middle of a narrow room (which Will did not agree with). PUHLEEZE!! This is design?? I think not. Not for normal everyday people anyway. His room for the fire fighters was awful. Red walls(very relaxing...not), VERY large couch down the middle of the room, couldn't walk around the coffee table, couldn't see the television, and the only real change to the room was two bookshelves, paint, furniture and an unsafe play area. Toyboxes should not have sharp corners and should have safety latches on them to keep little fingers from being smashed, and you NEVER turn a little kid loose with something they can hang themselves with (the hammock). Todd needs to act like an adult instead of a "skateboard dude" I have been to his website and am not impressed with any of his work.
Now for Will. He did a very good job giving Bidget a room that was pretty and functional for her. As to the personal touches, I'm sure she would like to add those herself as would any teenager.I think he is a very good designer and listens to his clients and should have been in the top 2. What he said after his show was cancelled shows you what kind of caring person he is.
Will and Sparkle Josh saved the day on all of the group challenges they were in. I also think Scott was a very good designer. I think he got nervous and over accesserized but take those jars and plates out and it was beautiful. His rug and painting were amazing!!
Sparkle Josh, I think, can be very versatile. He can glitz and glitter it, if thats what you want or he can do a very warm elegant room. Look what he did in the dining room of the kitchen challenge. They would never have got it done if not for him. He has a wonderful personality. Warm, witty, funny and intelligent. Look at his website and see for yourself what a very talented person he is. He is mulitalented.I also think Will and Josh should have a show together. It would be totally entertaining.
As for the judges. Vern Yip is the absolute best in design. He also has a very warm personality. I loved watching him on Trading Spaces and am looking forward to his new show. Didn't agree with him on Todd's room with the furniture stuck to the walls but I'll forgive him this time.
I think the next Design Star should let America vote on every challenge with Vern, Alice, and of course my fave, David B. as critics.
By the way, I would love to see Edward from Trading Spaces host a show. He is great.

I just am enjoying the show. I am excited for whoever makes it to the end. I don't hate either top two. I didn't hate any of them along the way. They all bring different strengths to the table. I am just enjoying the whole thing. I love all the episodes and enjoy watching them over and over.

Hasn't anyone figured out yet that in an economically depressed area (also like mine) in which Kim had the biggest challenge - We're lucky to have a Wal-Mart!? Impractical? Putting a table & chairs instead of a skateboard ramp in a dining area IS good design, folks!
With probably the least available resources as well as the least experience - she went far beyond the "extra mile" to give this family a priceless gift - a very pleasant, warm & comfortable place to come home to - that blended well in the older mobile home it was in. That made her a Star in their eyes - & mine, too!
I wonder how Donna & Shannon Freeman would have judged Todd's room. I can almost hear them saying "Too much furniture! And those red walls! Are we in a wine vat?" His room failed even the most basic principles of design- especially for a family of 8 with small children. Design Star potential? He'd make a better stunt man!

I agree that the group projects have frustrated viewers. Perhaps, though, that was a decision made to help the judges (who appear not able to view all of the backstage unpleasantness) find out about ugly personalities that surfaced through group dynamics. Though I'm rooting for Kim, I miss Christina, Scott, and Will.

I love the show!!! I just wish the judges gave more credit to the non-professional designers they have on the show. It seems like if there are 2 just okay designs then its the non-professional that stays? Seems to me if the homemaker is standing next to the pro. The pro should be the one to go. Afterall the pro had training, they probably won't get much better as where the homemaker might learn as they go and shock us by their quick learning?? Just a thought.
Posted by decor8 – September 5, 2007 12:08 PM
I read similar comments from upset fans of other shows. Kayne got "Aufed?" I'm not watching Runway. Marcel???? No SAM?? I'm done with Top Chef.
Please.
That's like me saying I'm not going to watch anymore of the NFL since the Bears lost the Super Bowl.
It's a contest. There will be one winner and numerous losers. The nice thing is the losers can use their exposure to jump start their careers.

I have really enjoyed reading all the blogs and thanks for the explanations. I am definitely hooked on Design Star and would never miss a show. However, I still feel that the final two should have been Sparkle Josh and Will. They have both the personality and design skills necessary for a successful show. HGTV, are you listening? We would love to see them together in many shows. Let's start with a Christmas Special (probably too late for this year). "Christmas Sparkle" is an idea. Anyway, this "Design Star" show is taped 5 - 6 months in advance of viewing so the viewers could not voice their opinions prior to the final episode. But I agree that HGTV show listen more to their loyal viewers.
Posted by Kathy – September 5, 2007 10:06 AM
First of all, thank you for being so honest and for all the hard work you are doing. Second, I do think that the blogs have gotten out of hand however, this is what happens when you ask people for their opinions...maybe it's not what you want to hear but it's just that....people's opinion. When you have a reality show and there is alot of editing involved, it leaves holes in some of the stories leaving people to form their own conclusions. For instance, on Kim's blog she said that the owners did not want laminate flooring, and leather couches and they wanted to keep the ugly wood bar(sorry I couldn't resist). HGTV did their editing and had us (the viewers) believe these decisions were all Kim's, which is unfair to her. So what else do you expect us to say? Nobody I know in their right mind would choose carpet, cloth, or even microfiber for that matter, if their husband was working in a mine all day bringing home all that dirt. It's brutal...but they wanted to know what the viewers were thinking. I offer no apologizes just suggestions for future shows.
First of all, I think that we the viewers should be able vote much sooner. We know what we like to see as far as design goes. The viewers obviously don't have a problem with camera presence, because we (the viewers) have concluded that camera presence is something that can be "fixed" (i.e. David B.), with training or with a side kick with a bubbling personality (hint, hint). So just because Martha is some sort of professional with an extensive background, she is obviously of the mark with this one. Everyone is entitled to be wrong at one point or another.
Second, cut down the number of group challenges. We've screamed this so loud on this website, I hope they at least change this one. In order to effectively vote for someone, we have to see what they are capable of in different circumstances, individually. How about having the hopefuls do different types of designs each week (Tuscan, contemporary, traditional, transitional, etc.)? Because every client is different and they should know how to do different types of designs.
Third, make the challenges even. No more...one group design the kitchen and the other group design the family room. That challenge was not fair.
Forth, NO MORE DOUBLE ELIMINATIONS!!!!!
We (the viewers) hate those.
Lastly, for the record, I love Vern Yip. He is America's favorite designer and very good at what he does and has accomplished alot. I'm not a Vern basher and I think he has been unfairly singled out in this competition as a judge just because he's intelligent. If people listen to him they'll learn alot.
And last but not least....I'm still a big HGTV fan!!!!!!!!!

i agree soooo much with those who suggest that Kim is no designer. Sure, she has a cute personality but that WVa room was so NOT professionally decorated! My biggest complaint will always be that we never really got enough of Josh Johnson. A room with 300 $.99 items? Stupid challenge. Tacky Las Vegas people send Christina home? Unbelieveable! Josh's only decision is place setting for the table and they send him home. I am not bashing the judges but I can state my opinion in a blog, and that is that Vern needs to be replaced by Kenneth Brown (He can do more than Asian inspired linear designs) and Miss Instyle can be replaced by Candace Olson. Cynthia Rowley at least acknowledged that Robb's drama was unpleasnt to watch. We knew that when he was ugly to Organic Josh in the first challenge.
Sorry lwatkins, but the judges have made big blunders this seaon.

I have a feeling that Sparkle Josh likes blondes, brunettes, redheads and gray hair - basically anyone with great hair! You are exactly right about Todd and Kim. Both are creative...in totally different ways and as a surfer...I have to say I did like Todd's skateboard ramp and his ocean inspired individual room. Kim's design shows raw talent, but that is what is kind of cool. My mom and I compared her to Rachael Ray - the same as you -after the last show. But...if Sparkle Josh had a show...please, please, please HGTV...I would be in heaven! He's such an angel and just glows. How can he not be on TV?

lwatkins, I just noticed the "design star gives back"blog is messed up again after the first few it shifts way to the left.
Thank you. :o)

To: HGTV producers and executives
1) If it is against policy for a non-eliminated
contestant to write to the official HGTV blog,
leaving his business website address,
then Todd would need to be eliminated. No
other contestant has tried to use this type of
influence, prior to his/her elimination.
2) If the judges are looking for a contestant to
be a design star in a particular type of a
program, it would only be fair to notify all
of the contestants about that goal. As it is,
many viewers blog that they feel that the
judging decisions have been illogical. In one
instance, the contestant with no design
concerns was eliminated, while other
contestants with serious design flaws were
continued. This seems illogical to viewers.
3) Please recognize that this is a time when our
country is at war. Because of this, we need
a designer who is very stable, even-tempered,
compassionate, and highly skilled. We need
a design star who will INSPIRE all of us to
elevate our personal conduct, as well as to
improve the appearance of our homes. Of
course, I am thinking of Will, perhaps paired
with Sparkle Josh. There is enough stress
and unpleasantness in the world for us to
come home and watch men behave like children
or engage in rude behavior toward others.
Your viewers were extremely unhappy with
Robb's behavior. I would hate to think that
this would be necessary for adults, but after
this season, perhaps a code of conduct should
be provided.
4) There have been many requests for a new
panel of judges for next year. Perhaps
someone who appreaciates classic/traditional
style, such as Candace Olson, should be
included.
5) lwatkins should continue managing the Design
Star blog.
6) Judges and contestants should be required to
take child safety/design classes, which are
often offered at many hospitals by Emergency
Room staff, to show your viewers the PROPER
way to design for babies/toddlers/young
children. My husband and I took such a
course and were shocked that no judge,
whatsoever, made any comment about the
unsafe items that Todd incorporated into his
last room. [a hammock to be used by a
toddler; toy boxes without safety hinges or
even finger wells] Truthfully, most of
these issues are usually just a matter of
common sense. i do not think that HGTV wants
to be irresponsible in showing such improper
examples to be used in homes.
5) You should consider allowing the judges'
decision to count no more than 50% fir each
episode, with the viewes' votes making up
the remaining 50%. I was told that this was
done on a program called "Dancing with the
Stars" and they had checks to prevent
cheating. You could consult with them.
6) For the final challenge, I do not believe
that the viewers should be shown any
comments made by the judges to the
finalists. Please credit us with some
intelligence. The final vote should be
totally the viewers' personal selection, with
no influence by the judges.
7) There is a strong belief, by the
preponderance of the viewers, that Will and
Sparkle Josh should be given their own
program on HGTV. They have massive
appeal and would surely have a strong
following. Their very personalities make
them STARS.
8) I have worked with special needs populations
in my professional life. I have seldom seen
anyone respond so sincerely, and so quickly
to Bridget, as Will did. He treated her with
RESPECT that she deserves. She has written on
the message boards that she loved his
work.
9) I have not heard of any viewer yet who
wants a quarter-pipe installed in his
living or dining room for use by ONE
skateboarder. Please ask your contestants
to create more practical and functional
designs.
10) Inasmuch as my husband served two tours in
military combat, with his life on the line,
I do not think that it is too much to ask
our "he-man" designers to keep their
shirts on when they are belng filmed for
TV or for a blog. Beyond that, it's very
unprofessional.

I read on the message boards that Todd asked Rob to be on his show if he won. I never read that myself because I couldn't find it, but that is one reason I won't vote for Todd. I read Rob's blog and hoped to find one shred of humility or appreciation, and found the same person who exited the studio with his bitter speech. As for Kim, I don't think I could vote for her either after seeing the WV family make over. That lone chair looks like a time out chair. She also wished ill will on her competitors during that make over. So the answer is what?

I really appreciate your blog and HGTV allowing us a place to express our opinion. I understand that not everyone will have the same opinion on every designer, but my issue is Will getting cut because of his presentation skills. As much as I love the Kristen Cunningham and Candace Olsens of the world, there is a place for a sweet humble gracious host such as Will. It just seemed a lot of people could identify with Will. HGTV needs to get in touch with who their audience is. I would never be able to identify with albeit a pretty Todd just because I am not into extremes, but that is just me. Thanks again.

lwatkins...Thanks for all that you do running this blog! You should be getting paid. I love what you said about Todd and Kim. I had actually just been thinking about how Kim could very well be the Rachael Ray of HGTV. I really enjoy your thoughts and your writing style.
I felt the need to comment on how strange I find the bloggers/ message boarders who seem to be designer and judge-bashers and have an endless list of ridiculous conspiracy theories. Seriously, who ARE you people? I simply refuse to believe that most of the millions of viewers out there share your views. I think it is much more likely that most people tune in each week and simply watch and enjoy the show. It probably never occurs to them to blog or read message boards. I have many friends and co-workers who watch this show and we usually talk about it each week. All of us have our favorites and are bummed when their shows are cancelled, but we continue watching and enjoying the show anyhow. It would never occur to any of them to write pushy and mean-spirited things online to try and persuade "the powers that be" to make things go our way. You know why? Because, as much as we love the show, IT'S JUST A SHOW!!! I would like to encourage those of you who are feeling so impassioned about this to harness that energy and use it to try and solve a real tragedy. Find a worthy cause: genocide in Darfur, global warming, childhood obesity. Find something worthy of all this time and intensity and then use your spare time to watch and ENJOY television. :)

It does not seem fair to me that Kim is openly supported by InStyle Magazine's senior editor. (For those of you that do not know what I am talking about, go read the message board postings under "Kim in the News") One would think that they should remain neutral, considering one of the judges is from that same magazine. The problem I have with the judges is that they let Will go because of his 'lack-of' presentaion skill. But they let Kim stay despite of her obvious lack of design skill. Last year David B did not have a great presentation skill either; why were they so tough on Will this year? HGTV needs to do something to save the show. Last year there were die hard Alice and David fans. This year there are die hard Todd and Kim haters. That is sad.

lwatkins, I also watched the entire season to date on Labor Day & Martha did say "I'd watch Todd's show" That is the truth. That was not edited by HGTV it was for real and it was during an elimination that Josh had already been gone. That is the truth. I not only saw it come out of her mouth but I heard it.

O.K. Super Fan. I just spent half hour looking for my 2nd blog on the last show and it is definitely not there and I didn't swear, etc. However, I did suggest that people blog in their design star choice (choices) simply by name, after the last show. Afraid to print that? If people want to vote for Kim or Todd, fine. But for the many many people who feel that they shouldn't be the last two standing, we should have a say. Blog in your vote after the last show people - pass the word. You suggest there may be surprises - I hope so - or HGTV stands to lose a lot of viewers.

Thanks lwatkins for explaining alot. Helps to know those things. I'm sure Todd and Kim are deserving to be in the finals....they are just not the ones that obviously the viewers would have chosen.
That's why I really wish HGTV would let the viewers vote each week like they do on Dancing With The Stars, American Idol and such. That way HGTV could be sure that their viewers would be getting the Design Star that we really want to see.
After all...isn't that the whole purpose? Don't they want to air a show that the viewers want to see and don't the advertisers want viewers watching their ads?
HGTV really needs to let the viewers vote from the beginning and only let the judges give their opinion.
Thanks lwatkins for all the time you spend on this blog. Thanks for listening to our comments and letting us communicate our thoughts, ideas, concerns, frustrations and hopes about what we want to see on HGTV. I really hope you are right that HGTV does care and wants to know what their viewers want!
Hoping for great shows in the future with HGTV. And also hoping for a better Design Star 3 next year.
Still missing Sparkle Josh, Scott, Will and Christina! But I'll keep watching hoping for a miracle! By the way, did Sparkle Josh not comment this week on the blogs? Couldn't find his if he did!
God Bless!
Cindy

I think you are doing an amazing job!I just started watching HGTV this year and got HOOKED. Were the blogs like this last year? I mean were people excited and stirred up like this? No one could have beat David that's for sure. But this year it seems like we have really fallen for some of the designers like Josh and Will. The bully personalities are a BIG turn off Robb/Todd. I guess that the viewers what to watch a design show with truly good hearted people in it Josh/Will.Thanks so much
