Sorry guys, this is the most dissappointing series this time around. There is nothing exciting or innovative. Boring, boring, boring.
The reality of the show should be no one qualified to be "Design Star" this time around and start over. That would wake everyone up. Too bad that it is pre-taped.

No contest the Jen and Trish are gonna be the top 2. If not I'm taking Clive's air horn and beating the judges with it. LOL

sparkle josh! excellent addition as always
unfortunately, i don't see any outstanding talent at this point...perhaps matt eventually
definitely not as exciting as prior seasons

(Alright, last night was the first episode I’ve seen so keep in mind we didn’t know the history or contestants)... OK, Are we the ONLY ones who thought the emotional/psychological meltdown of Michael was a tad disturbing or shocking in a troubling sort-of-way?? During the judge’s design reviews he was crying uncontrollably... working up to his breakdown, sobbing repeatedly “I’m Sorry!” over and over to the judges like someone pleading for his life. It was like being a voyeur to someone’s psyche you weren’t intended to see publicly. Then there came the climactic Mom-thing. He was distraught, repeating “I want my Mom!”......?! Woooaaahhh! His response felt distortedly or disproportionately out of context. If this was a small frightened child, or the response to a truly tragic event, the response could be instantly recognizable but this was nowhere near that.

I don't think that Scottie should have been kicked off at all! I don't think that the judges, when contemplating who to kick off, take personality into account. Scottie would have made a GREAT host, D. Paul,I think he deserved to be kicked off, although he is a good designer. I believed that Michael would win!! Sure, he was a little rude in the first challenge, and I disliked his attitude towards Tracee in the third challenge, but he would have been a great host! Michael was my FAVORITE. I thought his Spanish design was the best. Tracee's was SO tacky I can't believe she stayed on. Are the judges JOKING??? I thought that Tracee should have been gone by now, and Stephanie too. She is very nice and I like her designs, she has a good personality, too, but she's not a STAR. That video on HGTV.com of her trying to host was (I hate to say this) HORRIBLE! I like Matt, too, and he has a lot of talent, but I don't believe he will win, though he will go far. Mikey V is very talented too. I think Mikey V will win, now. He has good karma.

Great to see you back Sparkle Josh, what a goood feeling to see you back. As for the show this year, they said they were raising the bar, I havent seen it raised at all only lowered. I havent seen one room I have liked yet.

Sparkle Josh, so happy to see you again, and your comments have been so gracious. I disagree with the Judges this year, sorry Vern, because I love your designs. Scottie, I felt his room was nice, very retro and I thought the idea of space planning putting the beds together to make a long day bed was ingenius and he should have been given another chance. Tracey needs to be more of a team player, I realize this is a competition, but have some consideration. D Paul was also talented and should not have gone. Stephanie grow up honey, no one wants to see all this drama from you, bad choice painting the table it was beautiful on its own. Matt keep up the good work, I think you will be in the final two. Michael and Mikey V good work so far. Jennifer and Trish get your act together girls.

I'm so thrilled to see Sparkle Josh again! I truly loved watching the interaction last year between Will and Sparkle. Hope you get your own show!

If the judges are going to be so unfair in who goes home, the show is going to become unpopular. Scottie should not have been sent home. Neither the guy in the second episode. Please get "it" right.

I was very disappointed by all the bickering this season. Is this what viewers want to see. Is Design Star the Jerry Springer of design shows? There was only one good room and that was done by Michael Stribling and the other guy. Loved that room! As for Kim Myles, she won because she is good before the camera. Her designs have been horrible! Get rid of her and give Sparkle Josh and Will Smith a chance. If David Bromsted can improve his speech so can Will. Get him a voice coach and give him a shot. He can't be any worse design wise than Kim or Angelo Surmelis. Vern also needs to do better. He was actually better on Trading Spaces.

I thought it was weird that Vern made such a big deal over "no one wants to sleep to to toe" and then liked the 4-beds-in-one-frame idea. Hello! If you hate toe to toe, why would you like toe to toe times two? Plus, it was amazingly ugly...
Posted by sue S – June 24, 2008 2:45 PM
scottie should not have gone home. he finished on time. was very likeable and did the room all by himself.
stephanie, it was a crime to paint that gorgeous table. and personally i feel could have warranted your elimination.
but the elimination should (Hands down!) go to Tracee. Do we really need that drama? I don't. Plus everyone is going to hate her so much I think it could really do harm to her reputation. Nip it in the bud before everyone smears her name all over the HGTV site - including me.

this season just isn't as good or exciting as last year. I'm not seeing any real design talent...where's all the cool and different elements that should be there...very disappointing. I don't really care who wins. Sparkle Josh you rock!

Josh it's great seeing you. I've missed you. Of everyone that has been on Design Star you are my absolute favorite person and designer. Glad to see HGTV realizes we all love you, now, I'm wondering where the heck is your show. I'll be right there along with all your other fans when that finally happens.
God Bless, so happy to see you.

I'm so glad Sparkle Josh hasn't been forgotten. He's such a love and it's wonderful to see him being used on the HGTV website.
The first challenge produced very little of interest except that bedroom with the beds in the middle. What imaginative thinking. FABULOUS!!! As for the livingroom/sunroom: nice, but pretty Ho Hum. I could have done that well and I'm a nurse.
Why, oh, why did they paint that beautiful table? and then put that horrible finish on the "fireplace"? Steph seem sweet, but so far not much creativity coming out of anyone but the bedroom designers.
As for the retro - I hated it, but then I hate orange and retro. Toe to toe - no big deal. I think his design was good, overall, if you like retro.
I think the judges are great (Vern included), but they don't seem to be judging very sternly yet. They seem to be trying to be nice to some, but are unfair to others? Steph's partner in the diningroom was the one with the idea to paint that great table, but Steph is the one who got criticized so harshly. Both were responsible for the unfinished room. What gives? And why not dump that broad who lied?

Hi Josh!
I am enjoying your take on this season's mayhem! Egad, this is honestly a tough room this time! I think if Matt can stay focused and not get pulled down by the sniping going on, he will definitly be in the top two. Not sure yet who the other one will be!
Posted by Tessa – June 23, 2008 1:35 PM
Sparkle JOSH -- you are THE BEST!!! You are a personality that needs your own show and HGTV is missing the boat by not having you on the air weekly! That being said -- what's with this year's Design Star? Where are the wonderful designs, the surprise elements, the real stuff? Those 4 living rooms tonight were too huge -- just painting the walls was a whole day's work. Bring in painters to paint the walls, let the designers design! Let the designers manage the crews to do the actual work, let them work out time lines to finish. Give the designers time to plan and shop. I want to see real design -- not talented, creative minds hanging from a ladder.
Doing the grub work is too tiring and grates on everyone's nerves. This is Design Star -- not Fastest Paintbrush in Town. Give these people a break -- let them do what they are supposed to do -- DESIGN!

First of all, I love DESIGN STAR and can't wait for Sunday night when I rule the TV so I can watch. I just finished watching Episode 3 and I have to say Tracey should have been sent home. I like to be positive about people but Tracey can't seem to get along with anybody, plus her teammate basically did all the work while she wasted time. If the room had been left to her it wouldn't have been finished. Plus the stuff she picked out was ugly - those chairs, ugh! I didn't think that De Paul's crown molding was the best plan and he even said that he realized that once he started but he did finish and it looked very nice. The room probably would have looked better without it but it did look nice. I was very surprised that he was sent home and not Tracey. I agree with many of the comments - get rid of the DRAMA QUEEN and send Tracey home. I would like to see the fighting end this season - that is not what we watch DESIGN STAR for. Thanks!

What a very wonderful surprise to check in and see that my FAV Sparkle Josh is here! I so wish you could have stayed last year and won and I wish your opponent would have been the lady that got kicked out due to the "Tacky Couple"...Kim just isn't a design star in my book (she borders on tacky & her excessive talking...gets on my last nerve). David Bromstad will be hard to beat. OK Love you Josh now on with this 3rd season.
1st episode: The Living Room rocked! Loved the color, and the silver leafed bookcase and everything about the room was pulled together. (so glad the "extravegant drape idea" got thown out for the simple side panels) who does those Funeral Parlor drapes anymore in the home anyway? Yuk and ewwww.
The Sun Room...Hello...why would you ever paint a "Sun Room" chocolate?
The dining room...I "got" why they Painted the table white and I agree it was a good idea but... the fireplace...on my gosh...it was horrible and too many little chachka's scattered all over the room wasn't smart either. But even with it's little faults (I can't believe Vern thought a little painter's tape made the room incomplete-Harsh Vern...very harsh.)the room still came off way better than Mr. 70's Room.
The worse design EVER on DS was that Rusty/orange "throw back" to the Seventies...bedroom...it didn't look good in the 70's and it does not bear revisiting. He deserved to go if that is all he had. (and I would NEVER want to sleep toe-to-toe...Vern called that one correctly)
The "big canopy bed" was ingenious but my pick would have to be the Living Room.
The girl crying doesn't bother me, at least she cares, but "Ms. Throw Everyone Under the Bus"...does bother me...but I want to see something she can do on her own.

LOVE HAVING SPARKLE JOSH BACK!! HE NEEDS HIS OWN SHOW - LAST YEAR I THINK THE WRONG CONTESTANT WON. i DON'T THINK KIM HAD/HAS THE TALENT TO HAVE BEEN THE WINNER. THE SECOND PLACE WINNER (TODD??? - I CAN'T REMEMBER!!) AND SPARKLE SHOULD BE PAIRED UP FOR A SHOW TOGETHER.
Posted by jeanne – June 22, 2008 8:19 PM
Are you all serious about scotty? this show is a designing show and so I could care less about the personalities and the drama...scotty's room is HIDEOUS! The color, the obnoxious tie-dye sheets, the lack of art on the walls...why in the world did he deserve to stay? His room was the ugliest and boring, all he did was paint and put the bedding down. No design.
At least Stephanie and jennifer designed and took risks, you may not like the design but it was bold and I think it turned out beautifully.
And tracee/michael bring the excitement...come on people, stop acting like this isn't a reality show first, that happens to be about design 2nd. Tv needs drama!
Posted by James – June 22, 2008 5:53 PM
This show is about design, not who is the most emotional. I am sick of the crying too, however I think that the retro 70's bedroom was a horrid plan. Would I have painted the table? No, that table could have worked very nice with the rest of the room. The natural beauty of an item doesn't need to be destroyed each time in the name of design. I do agree that the bedroom with the connecting beds was absolutely inspired.
Tracee needs to speak up next time she hates an idea, and not just compromise all the time. Throwing her teammates under the bus because of her lack of communication skills shows that she is out for number one, which technically during a contest you should be; however not in the way she did it.
This is going to be a great season I think. Good luck to all!

I am looking forward to tonight's show. I would like to see more sophistication and the contestatns act like adults. As for the desgin I liked both bedrooms. Sleeping toe to toe seems more comfortable than two inches away from someone. I look for D Paul to shine. The men seem more enthusiatic and fun to watch. Ladie's please I hope you shine this week. I do not have a favorite yet. I like Mikie V and D Paul.

I wish Design Star would take a clue from American Idol and let the viewers choose who goes. I agree with so many who have express a dislike of the judges. Vern could have taken lessons from some of Season two's designers. I like Kim Myles, she is very likable, but lets face it - THe show was fixed so the "untrained viewer" would win- I guess they thought that would bring more viewers - but If the viewers were given the coice from the beginning, Sparkle Josh and Will would have been there for the finale - and I would have cared more about watching it! Take a clue, Design Star execs - who are you trying to please, here? The viewers or Vern? If it is Vern, just do us all a favor and send him flowers and maybe take him out for a nice dinner - and keep the show to yourself! This show has so much potential - viewers want to see a design competition - but with the current way the show is run, just leaves a bad taste in so many viewers mouths.
Posted by Joy Randolff – June 21, 2008 12:16 PM
I agree that no one should be eliminated after the first show. Maybe they will consider changing this for the next season.
The guys did a great job on designing and laying out the bedroom and they finished, amazing. All others were okay, but not really special.
And with everyone trying to go "green", to paint a beautiful wood table, not good.
Love the show, can't wait for Sunday!

I am so happy to see Sparkle Josh doing this commentary! What fun!!
Onto the bones of it. I think that Tracee kind of got the short end of the stick in the judging and the "slamming" in the green room. I don't know if anyone else noticed, but that Michael is a sneaky little dude. he never seemed to do a lot of work, but spent an awful lot of time putting his 2-cents worth into everyone else's room. I know we don't see but a fraction of what goes on, but he seems to be incapable of articulating himself and his design style.
It should be interesting to see how long the judges put up with that kind of inability.
Posted by Vicky – June 20, 2008 8:02 PM
I almost have decided not to watch this season because of the back-biting. I personally like it when people act like mature grown-ups and get along. I am in total agreement with other opinions posted regarding the painting that gorgeous table - that could have been the crowning glory of the room (and I didnt like the faux treatment of the mantle either). I felt sorry for Scotty - he should have had another chance. I am hoping the next episode will have some maturity, or else I will proably abandon this season until the final episode... (Remember how gracious most of the contestants were the last 2 seasons? They hold the bar)
Posted by Gaby – June 20, 2008 2:44 PM
If anybody should go, it should be Vern. I am
so sick of him! I agree that maybe no one should go home after the first challenge. I just don't see that quality in these designers. And I really don't enjoy the drama, I want to see designing happening!
Posted by Genna Mueller – June 20, 2008 12:18 PM
Hi Sparkle Josh. It was good to see your friendly and smiling face when I opened my HGTV email. I thought your comments were very kind, as I would have expected from you. Obviously, the designers have talent or they wouldn't have made it to the show, but I'm not feeling the "love". Maybe it's still too early? I was surprised that Vern called the dining room a failure and then cancelled Scottie. Painting the table was much worse than the rust color.
Posted by Joellen – June 20, 2008 10:22 AM
I am a HUGE fan of HGTV and an even bigger fan of DesignStar. Probably the best reality show on TV. However, this years contestants don't seem to be of the quality of the first two seasons. I believe David (season 1) was the best designer and his show ROCKS. I believe Kim's show (season 2) is great too. Maybe Vern has stretched himself a little thin this season by hosting his own show (Deserving Design) and judging? I must agree with 99% of viewers and say that Scott's design was not bad at all. In fact it had a retro look that a lot of people love. I do hope they bring him back at some point this season cause I think he didn't get a chance to show off his stuff. Drama Queen's GO HOME!! I think the guys bedroom was an excellent design and they will definitely keep the others on their design toes. The living/sunroom was really nice....but there was no imagination..same ol stuff we've seen over & over again. But the girls that painted that beautiful wood table must have lost their minds. They were my pick to go home!! I still think its a little to early to pick a winner but I'm pretty sure it will be a guy this year. The women don't seem to be up to the challenge this season. Maybe they can prove me wrong. Good to see you again Sparkle Josh....whatever happened to the season 2 runner up guy (can't remember his name SORRY)? I thought he'd end up with something on HGTV like Fakier did from season 1?I still think HGTV RULES!!!!!
Posted by TeTe – June 20, 2008 10:13 AM
yeah! Sparkle Josh is back. I think you're the perfect former contestant to bring us commentary. excellent. I LOVED the boys bedroom with that huge bed they built. I hope we see more great 'out-of-the-box' thinking this season. (i bet there was a big fight over who gets to sleep on the top) Otherwise i think design by committee turned out some OK designs...very safe. What's up with everyone being "traditional chic"...at least last season the house was a little wackier looking. And OMG if that girl with the boobs cries one more time! hold it together lady, it's only the first challenge! can't wait for next week :)

I am highly disappointed with this year's show. Very unprofessional. What is with the special treatment that has been given to Josh. During the interview on the very first show Vern should have let him walk out and stay out. In real life I don't think the interviewer would run after the interviewee and bring them back in. I don't think the judging was fair on the second show. If two people do a room both should be held responsible not just one. Vern you have more class than what you are displaying this year.
Posted by LM – June 20, 2008 8:39 AM
Josh, I so enjoy watching you. You would do well on TV. Your design style is a litte out there for me, I don't do bling, but I just love you. My daughter loves you and your bling.
As for this years designers, I really like the two story bedroom. The living room was very nice, but the two story bedroom rocked.

Sparkle josh, I am so glad HGTV keeps you with their blogs. I think they should give you some air time to strut your designs. As far as this years Design Star...I wanted to slap that "blond Michael". He was being so 2faced and Tracee should have been more mature and just tuned him off. He'll fall on his face real fast! He just doesn't have the "stuff" to make a star!
Posted by Carol – June 19, 2008 7:35 PM
Everyone loves Sparkle Josh, give him a show. I love HGTV, I watch so many different shows on there. However, I have no interest what so ever in Kim Myles show. This year pick someone with the personality to carry a show, entertain an audience, create fans as well as possess talent. And PS...Its never to late to give Josh a show, dont you see we love him as a tv personality.

I was sad to see Scottie go. I think he would have had some great designs in the future. I would like to see that whiney blonde boy GO!!!! I thought the dining room was great (except that fireplace paint job).
Posted by shea14shea – June 19, 2008 6:16 PM
I was very disappointed with the first designing show. Vern himself said an unfinished assignment was not acceptable, so why are those 2 bimboos who did the dining room still there? And what good designer would have painted that beautiful table. Scottie got a raw deal and I really wonder why. His room was not that bad and it was FINISHED. I don't think anyone will match David"s talent, but at least give each chosen contestant a true chance (and Scottie did not get one)!!!!!!!
Posted by Del – June 19, 2008 5:22 PM
Good to hear from Sparkle Josh! Even though I'm not much into "sparkle" I think he had some great comments. Scottie chose to work alone and that was a mistake. His room looked like something out of the Montgomery Wards catalog of 1980. There was nothing on the walls and were those pillow cases on the valances? A design star should be beyond the bed in a bag thing. I agree that no one should get cancelled on the 1st show. Boot 2 on the 2nd show. Given a 2nd chance, I think Scottie would have given some seasoned experience to the group who seem a bit over confident. Painting that gorgeous piece of wood was a huge mistake. And yes, let's cut the drama and concentrate on professionalism. That's why we watch- to see what the pros would do!
Posted by LouAnn – June 19, 2008 5:07 PM
I agree that no one should go home the first show everyone needs time to shine and one time does not cut it. And please please please stop showing the tears just to fill up time that could be given to showing more of what was done. And I was very shocked to see them paint that beautiful dineing table if I did that I would be shot on sight.
Posted by Gwen – June 19, 2008 2:27 PM
Oh I just want to kiss you Josh! You are such a sweetie. As for the first challenge, I really was not impressed by the designers' abilites. Maybe it just takes time for them to warm up or something. Although I was shocked at Scotty leaving, I believe that the judges know what they are doing. I adore Vern's designs and Love Kim's use of color, and David's art. I hope we are able to retrieve another element of design from this new crew. By the way Josh, I happen to love anything shiny too.
Posted by Brenda Torres – June 19, 2008 12:39 PM
OK then ruin a table and fireplace then cry - you get to stay. Be a brat and impolite - you get to stay. Turn on your team mates - you get to stay.
Do your room in rust mostly by yourself - YOU GOTTA GO. Makes no sense to me. I'm a little wary of the rest of this season, not sure I be able to handle it without throwing a brick at the TV. I did not get to watch the other seasons but those winners are some of my favorite shows, so I will try to hang in there.
Posted by Cheryll – June 19, 2008 11:53 AM
At first I thought I was watching "Project Runway" or "Hells Kitchen"-I expected better from HGTV! Get the drama queens off and make way for real designers. That's what this should be all about. If you can't play nice with others-get out of the sand box-and whats with the rude name calling: "Mommy Dearest"-he needs to go back to junior high school! I may watch one more times-if some of these people aren't eliminated soon, I may not watch again. I want to see fresh design talent and someone who could be a real asset to the "HGTV Lineup", If I want to watch crappy drama there is always "Tori & Dean", Deon & Ms P" or "Jessica & Nick"- come on - step back up to the plate-don't get down in the trash -remember what this network was created for and why people watch! And Vern, if I wanted to watch some snippy judge I would tune into "Idol" and watch the original-Simon Cowell.
Posted by dlee – June 19, 2008 11:38 AM
Well, actually my group of women who saw Scotty's room thought it was almost fine. We can't see the toe to toe arrangement, but we didn't think the color was that bad, and we thought the other rooms also had some minor flaws. Painting that slab of wood dining room table almost seemed sacrilegous, and if the mantle was to be painted they should have done a better job. The paint tape - big deal, it takes two seconds to pull it off. Anyone who would fire a designer for something like that would be an idiot. The living room overall was nice, not a 100% meshing, but still quite nice. The pool table play room needed some help. The mommy dearest thing....please, if that's going to knock your socks off then they've had an overly indulgent life. I couldn't have thought of a whole lot more exciting choices to use. Let's face it, they all want to be the best and win, which means they want their choices of design used, who wouldn't? Yes, you have to stand up for your opinion, but for the group efforts, you need to go with the group ideas - or come up with a compromise if you want to stay on the show. People don't normally (Scotty being the exception) get cut from the show if they work hard and cooperate for group designs, it's usually that their individualistic ideas that kill them. As designers, I think the prima donna is a given - work with it or go home. Speaking of which, too bad Todd couldn't come back - he had at the least very interesting designs and would have been an entertaining host. We like David, he's pretty cool. I think it's too soon to pick a season three winner yet.

Josh,
I am a student in an interior design program and some things about this show concern me. You ask these designers to form teams and then you have them turn on each other by holding them individually responsible for aspects of a team design. That doesn't work in the real world. The design team succeeds together or fails together. Someone should be "project director" and give assignments. That is more along how a senior designer of a project would do it. If you will "cancel" them individually, then they should be given their part of the design, and then they will know they are responsible for it. Thank Josh, I loved your designs.

I am glad that Sparkle is back. He is fun. I was disappointed that that Scottie was the first to go. Not that his room was that great but his personality was such that he would have been a better team player than Tracee or Michael. His mistake, I believe, is he tried to do the first challenge alone. That was hard & foolish. The design stars thus far have been teamed up with a crew for their shows, so he needed to work with someone this time. He would have had another chance to work alone later. I have thought about the sun room situation & the whole idea was to have a relaxing get-away, not a sun room. The team worked harder on the living room but did not have time to spice up the sun room/get-away. The green bar was an after thought & didn't fit in. Tracee & Michael had better clean up their act. They need to work with others better. The dining room was not my taste at all. Painting furniture looking good to begin with, is a big no-no to me. Distressing the fireplace with a fake wood look is taking an over used technique & ruining a perfectly nice feature. I liked the winning design for the other bedroom. It was very creative & solved a problem of too many beds and too little space.

I so disappointed in that anyone would want to paint tha beautiful table. What has happened to the idea that nature is pretty. I also don't like the idea that dark colors are everyones ideal color choices. Red just makes me angry.I would love to see one designer that thought light colors are nice. (pastels) I'm still waiting for this years star to shine.Who will think out side the box? Who will have all the skills, and not want to be slap-happy with a paint brush and a glue gun.

I am disappointed that Scottie was sent home right off the bat.He showed a level of maturity and experience that seems sadly lacking in the rest of the designers. Tracee makes me sick, her whining, crying and not accepting responsiblity , blaming everything on the others shows an appalling lack of abilty to be a team player. blonde Mike plays up the "camp" a bit too much.He needs to settle down and get serious.

Sparkle Josh is awesome and he's right on the money with his comments. I've been a huge fan of Design Star every season but the contestants on this one are a huge disappointment. They seem selfish, childish and not very talented so far. While I didn't like Scottie's room, he finished on time, he worked well with others and was polite to all. He truly did NOT deserve to go this week. I wish they would set up Design Star so that nobody gets booted the first week but two people get kicked off the second week. That way everyone has two chances to design before getting eliminated. We don't always get to see what the first person can really do. Thanks Josh. I'll be looking forward to your comments next week.

I have been a fan of this show since the beginning. Was so disappointed in the first episode. I also agree that the wrong person was sent home, but really the judges had to make a choice and this first episode it could have been anyone because not anyone really stood out at all for decorating ideas or show hosts. They have a lot of learning yet to go. Personally, I did not see any room that I would have in my home.
Posted by lynne – June 19, 2008 7:38 AM
I agree with most comments about Michael and Stephanie, it is amazing that they made it so far.
As for Scottie, that room was really something out of a bad 1970's IKEA catalog, and the worst out of all of the rooms, however the judges said that the dining room was unfinished and disqualified because of the painter tape left behind, so they should have let Stephanie go.
In the end the judges contraddicted themselves, and screwed up the results, almost making me think that they wanted to get rid of Scottie from the start.
As for Vern, I see the other side of the Diva now, and I don't like it.
Posted by Marco – June 19, 2008 5:37 AM
I thought Stephanie should have gone home & I think she was crying so much because she knew she should go home too. I was shocked that Scotty was the one the judges chose. My husband said they had to keep Stephanie or none of the men would watch the show since she provided the bouncie boobs & butt entertainment. I was appalled when Trish & Stephanie painted that awesome dining room table & agree with the blogger that said it was a furniture atrocity but it was also a furniture faux pas. I really think that Scotty is a classy guy that got a raw deal. He seemed very at ease in front of the camera during some spots I saw. I think they should bring him back at some point for another shot & a surprising twist in the competition.

Absolutely no one can top David Bromstadt. And
this group isn't even coming close. Send the cry
baby home and Trish can go with her. Talk about
unprofessional! I've never been thrilled with Vern and am even less so after this episode..I'm
sure he is Mr. Perfect. I still can't believe they painted that gorgeous table.
Posted by Cindy – June 19, 2008 1:51 AM
I agree with all who thought Scottie should have stayed. I was anxious to see what he would bring to the table. I hope that some of Tracee's comments to her team concerning the design of the rooms were not aired. She does come off as a diva, but to out ant out lie...? One of the girls working on the dining room should have gotten the boot - like the one who cried at every little thing!! The nerve, painting that beautiful table!!
Posted by Nita – June 19, 2008 12:53 AM
Well, it seems unanimous--Scottie finished, recall him. It wasn't fair to dismiss him after one project when he finished and just because Vern didn't like it. Tracee was kept because she adds drama, but the viewers want justice, and she is a whiner who could have stood up for herself with the team. Stephanie and Jennifer's judgement is in question for painting the table and the fireplace. Taking down the tape was a sad reason for them to fail, but the crier should have been the one to leave.
Posted by Sue Ann Armstrong – June 18, 2008 11:49 PM
I felt Scottie was just too old school in his design. Tracee is selfish and self centered not a team player. She was given the ability to speak up and didn't, because she was being shut down, oh please she can mouth off when she needs too. She chose the brown walls that Vern hated. Natalie is way out of her league. Michael is in training. Matt has the ability to think outside the box and apply style to boot. I agree with Vern you have to push the designers your looking for their best in all areas not mediocrity after all some one is going to sponsor your new show. Tears and boobs oh brother, one's pimping and the other well..........these ladies need show their talents not their boobs and stop being babies and crying. I don't want to see tears I want to see their ability. Frankly I do a better job, but then I have an artistic background. Common contestants kick it up several notches your still falling short.
Posted by Lechatboote – June 18, 2008 10:33 PM
Josh,
Your designs were outstanding last season.....good to see you and very happy to hear your opinion of the first show....hopefully, we'll be hearing a lot more about you and your design business....maybe a show of your own real soon!
Posted by Dianne – June 18, 2008 10:32 PM
The living room was the best and had an air of sophisication with a soft but dramatic color palette. As far as the dining room, he fireplace looked horrid painted like distressed country or something. The table shouldn't have been painted.
The 70s brown and rust room was kind of dull, but I thought the long sofa as a day bed look-was impactful and different.(who's toes are going to really touch, vern?) I wonder if the
chick really did try to give her opinion in theLR?
Posted by katrina – June 18, 2008 10:28 PM
I think it will harder for some these contestants to compromise since they have had their own businesses for years. And that is really the name of the game, assert yourself but if the majority decides otherwise do your best to make it a success.I think some of these contestants aren't going to be able to do that. I guess I like it when someone has the attitude that "they are all good at what they do just different" not the attitude "they are great and the rest are inferior". I'm a big fan of Design Star but I really hate the bickering. I like it when they do individual challenges to show their talent. But to be a good host they have to be able to work well with a team. I like the guy in the white hat to win and he sure did in 06 and she did in 07. Good luck to them all.

I watch HGTV daily but this season of design stars to say the least are talented yet spoiled.Personally I do not care for Stephanie, she is not a team player.Though Scottie's color choices for this show were not the best,I recently watched a hosted show who used that color for walls in the bedroom but did add some elements that made the color appear brighter.I know these shows have to be edited but I did not see anyone working with the one voted off.I agree that the dining table did not have to be painted,so much they could have done with the raw pine look and made the table stand out.I did not like the stools used with the table, mabe a benchlook instead with a 1,000 lb table, then dress the room and table .At any rate that table was over the top. This is going to be interesting this year and I would like to see more team work.
Posted by CM – June 18, 2008 8:09 PM
I think the dining room was weird. The faux painted wood on the fireplace was just ugly, and then they ruined the perfectly gorgeous slab of wood dining table by painting it. Would've saved them time to just leave both as they were, with maybe a fresh coat of paint on the fireplace.
I thought the sunroom was just boring.

I LOVE SPARKLE JOSH!!! Oh my goodness, where have you been hiding??? YOU should have been the winner last season. Unfortunately, your time was cut short by an obvious mistake by a red-neck vegas couple! UGH, I hope they don't repeat last years mistake and let the non-qualified make the decisions again. I love you and ALL your sparkleness!!!
I lost all interest after you left the show, NO ONE sparkled as much as you did! And certainly the winner last year was merely "luck of the draw"... just my opinion!
Good luck vloging this years talent and not so talented. I look forward to hearing more and more sparkle from you!!! Keep shining on, with as much spray on tan as you can handle, I mean opinions. Now that YOU are included, I just may tune in again...
Posted by KJ (aka little sparkle) – June 18, 2008 7:47 PM
Personally, I believe that there probably were a lot of things said that we did not get to see in the edited version. With that, I believe that Tracee probably did make suggestions that were tossed out. None of the living room designers cooperated with each other. As for the person who said that Tracee was representing Louisville and better get more friendly.....get a clue. She represented Louisville and herself fine. I only wish that, like Josh, she hadn't exited the room crying. Stand your ground, state your opinions and design. As for the blonde boob bimbo decorating the dining room, stop setting women back about 50 years....either get somewhere on your talent and brain or stay at home in the bedroom. That is where you flaunt your boobs...not to get a price discount.
I don't even have a name for Michael, but if I did it would not be nice. Learn some manners! Calling someone Mommy Dearest isn't funny it was just plain rude. I have no idea where you feel your design talents lie, but I assure you that we did not see them in the first episodes.
Good luck to everyone!

I agree with most of what Josh had to say, especially about the dining room. I've painted rooms and not noticed the tape still there for hours. It was a very lovely well thought out room and they were that upset about tape? I also thought that Scott's room was well done and that they chose the wrong person to go but then they couldn't very well get rid of the troublemaker right off the bat. Where would all the show's drama go? She was probably wise to stand out like that just so the show would keep her. I didn't see anything she did design wise that said she should stay.
Posted by Ann – June 18, 2008 4:22 PM
I agree with most of the comments...Matt and Mickey V will be the last two standing...but how did that blond Michael and Stephanie ever make it past the interview stage...ugh! Both of them are children and should be dismissed as quickly as possible...can't imagine watching a show hosted by either one of them in the future...and WHY would ANYNE paint such a beautiful table...Stephanie and Jennifer need to go to school and learn about value!. While I'm a fan of terra cotta and brown...thought Scottie's execution was much too simplistic and didn't have the WOW factor! Since it was a bedroom, I would probably have put the brown on the walls and used the terra cotta for the accents! Tracee should have spoken up more in their discussions as the room was being designed and NOT after the fact...felt the living room and sun room should have related to each other more...though I didn't mind the dark brown on the sun room's walls because there was a whole wall of windows so I don't understand how that color would have made it "cave-like"! Will look forward to Sparkle Josh's future Vlog's on the show as it progresses week to week!

Is this Design Star or Dr. Phil? If they think America is going to watch that crying bimbo then they are mistaken. What happened to requirments for hosting a show???? Tracee is full of herself and must be crying to daddy about now. Its not fair daddy. boo hoo.
Posted by Terri – June 18, 2008 11:05 AM
Sparkle Josh is a great commentator as he knows design! No one really knew what happened to him after the last show. He has the industry knowlegge it seems to "rat" out the contestants as to whether they shine like silver or should be dumped like dirt.
Posted by Rhonda – June 17, 2008 9:54 PM
I've been a fan since season 1 and so far it looks like most are a bunch of prima donnas. The previous designers seemed to be far more professional and worked at the task not trying to one up each other. Somehow I can't see any one particular one actually being able to host a show by themselves.

Posted by mandykn* – June 17, 2008 4:13 PM
I agree with so many of the comments that have been made to date so I don't want to duplicate what's already been said. My husband & I have been watching Design Star since Season 1 and we love it. There are definitely some losers in this group of designers, but maybe they will turn themselves around in the assignments to come, hopefully so!! Tracie needs to become more of a team player with a stronger voice when making decisions with her teammates. Trish & Mike need to allow others in their prospective groups to help make decisions and have more say without all of the obnoxious comments... They seem to be a bit bossy and loud! The guys, other than the blonde Michael seem okay and hopefully won't try to overpower other's that will be in their groups because they can build... Jennifer & Stephanie meshed for their first assignment with their ideas of painting items that needed to just be placed in the space but as they begin to be with others they may find that their ideas... will be challenged and then what?? The crying that Stephanie does is a little bit of a turnoff. She seems like a very sweet person, but she is going to have to buck up under the pressure... if she wants to survive in the competitions yet to come! Poor Scottie, I think he got a raw deal and the judges let go of the wrong person. He finished his room and did it by himself. Perhaps the color and style wasn't mod and the judges cup of tea, but it wasn't a complete washout either! Oh well, water under the bridge now! Looking forward to next week's competition, looks extremely interesting from the previews I've seen.
Posted by KarrieAnne – June 17, 2008 2:20 PM
I just think it is going to be extremely hard for anyone to outdesign David Bromstad...but, with that being said, I am enjoying this season's "offerings" so far and I look forward to the upcoming challenges! I have read & heard that the hours are grueling and that there is little sleep, so I'm sure that emotions are very high. I do agree that Scotty should not have been the first to go. He seemed very mature & that aspect will be greatly missed! I believe we would have seen great designs from him further on. Blue bedroom gets my #1, then the living room; can't say much good about the sunroom, and the dining room was a "nightmare"! Oh well, ON TO
CHALLENGE #3!! May the best man (or woman) win!!
Posted by Pam C. – June 17, 2008 1:36 PM
I am from Louisville, but now live in Las Vegas, and I can't believe that Tracee is representing Louisville this way! She is not "down home" friendly, and her attitude was very negative. Since she got to stay, she had better clean up her act. I think that the orange bedroom was not so bad, he should have been given another chance.
Posted by Amagical1 – June 17, 2008 12:50 PM
Josh,
Please The Dining room is great.
SCOTTIE Did Not Do the room by himself. It Was shared.
Stephanie is great she will relax.
I don't know about Tracee.

Why on earth is sparkle Josh back? Who is this guy??? Is he really any more than a "Barbie wann-a-be" with bad taste? I am disappointed that his show hasn't been cancelled!!!!
Posted by mary – June 17, 2008 11:22 AM
Sparkle Josh at his finest! The world loves you and wants to see more of you. These teasers by HGTV every week for 3 minutes is simply not enough to gives us the Sparle we need. HGTV, listen up, Sparkle Josh rocks! He could be the Sparkle and Shine HGTV needs to put the network over the top. Apparently HGTV realizes how much of a draw Sparkle is, thus using him to "SELL" Design Star 3. Sparkle, you were the reason for tuning in last year and the ONLY reason I am tuning in this year! I love you.
Mikey and Matt are the best designers on this season. I believe they may be the final two, but I will reserve that until future episodes. Vern, you shouldn't be so hard on the contestants, time management is important, but have you ever been under such pressure and time constraints where you could not run back before the episode airs and rip a piece of tape off of the wall?
Posted by Keeley Marie – June 17, 2008 11:10 AM
Josh, I love your vlogs!! I agree with the judges' first show cancellation. Scottie wanted to do his room alone, to give himself a chance to shine above the others, but he failed to step up. If that was his best effort, then he had nothing more to show. The room was awful. The dining room was disappointing. Stephanie and her partner seemed to be working without an idea of what they were doing, kinda scattered and chaotic. I loved Matt and Mikey's room the most; just perfect! Michael is talented but also young and undisciplined; he thinks it's all about him. He needs to consider others' opinions and ideas. Tracee didn't handle herself well with her room partners, but perhaps the judges see something we don't. The future episodes will reveal more about all of them. I can't pick two finalists at this point, but I believe Matt should be one of them. I can't wait for Sunday night!!!!
Posted by Iris – June 17, 2008 10:58 AM
The dining room was horrible! Anyone know what store they were shopping in? I soooo want to go there (and not to paint that gorgeous table!) The fireplace looked like a kindergarten finger painting project.
Maybe if he had put a divider between the two beds instead of having them connected it would have been better.??
Posted by Mandi – June 17, 2008 1:34 AM
I didnt like Scottie's room either but I felt that cry baby Stephanie should have been the one let go. Vern said it best"a incomplete room" is not acceptable. So Scottie should have stayed and Stephanie should have left. That dining room table was beautiful until they painted it. I think in the coming weeks we shall see Stephanie painting everything in sight. That will be her downfall. Also that Michael thinks he is more than he really is.

Mikey V and Matt should without any shadow of a doubt be the top 2. Although I am leaning more to Mikey V as the winner I think he is a good designer and would make an interesting host. No dount looks good on film which is important!

Enough with the tears and back stabbing; need something new and refreshing - fun!! Loved the bedroom! Mikey and Matt are the best talent, doesn't mean they'll win - right Sparkle?

I look forward to DesignStar every year, but this year I am disappointed. Tracee's theatrics are unprofessional. If you feel strongly about some part of the project, let it be known. (which really wasn't shown in the discussion.) Stephanie's tears are just too much! I agree there are too many commercials! And how can you be a judge on design when you dress like a 20 yr old and show no personal taste yourself?
Posted by A.M. – June 16, 2008 9:22 PM
This was a very interesting episode, some good points and some not so good points. First off, I was quite shocked at who was voted off. Scottie's room wasn't all that bad. I actually thought he did a pretty nice job by himself. At least he finished what he started which is more than the girls in the dining room did! The guys in the upstairs bedroom did very well with their design, they actually had the WOW factor. As for the team in the living room & sunroom, well I thought they did leave Tracie out a little, but she's an adult and should have spoken up like a big girl. You don't compromise your thoughts and input when your competing for a prize. I definitely think she did the wrong thing with turning in her teammates and crying "oh poor me", but she reaped the consequences of her unjust complaints. You have to be a team player in this competition almost to the end. I would have given her the boot and let Scott prove himself in the next design episode. Thought the judges really goofed on this choice! At least Scott took it better than most and was a good sport about it. As for Jennifer & Stephanie, I don't know what to say except I hope they have learned from their horrendous mistakes now that they have a 2nd chance. Why would anyone wreck a beautiful table & fireplace like they did?? No WOW factor here! The only other annoying person that I hope is soon to go is that blonde headed Michael who drove me crazy on his interviewing skills, or lack of them. He's a baby and acts as though he's designing all by himself. He also has a few ADHD characteristics that are just so hard to watch. He's so hyper and obnoxious! I hope he can calm down in the next episode so others have a chance to control some of the designing... Trish needs to calm down too because she likes to control the show as well. Fighting and arguing doesn't win favor with teammates or the judges as we all saw this past week! Good luck to you all and may the best designer win!!

The choice of who was sent home was sooooo very unfair, he did the room all by himself, came in on time and completed although i do agree that the design was not the best, it was the first episode. That woman who tried to blame eery one but hersel for her mistakes is still there imagine that, but i supose that the producers need to have some drama so we will have to expect to have her on board for some
time in order to bring some spice to the show. I am begining to think that she could be a plant.

I am so glad to see you here Sparkle Josh!!! You made the show for me last year!!!!! Matt and Mickey were brilliant on their room! The dining room was very nice too and I agree that they were a little harsh in judgement. The brown in the sunroom was a bit too dark. I would not have made that choice. Look forward to seeing and hearing more of the Sparkly comments as the show progresses!!!!!

I think that Tracee should have gotten the boot. She totally lied about what her true statements were while working with her team. Sometimes people who are use to running the show as it were, cannot handle learning from others. I loved the rooms as far as the paint, some of the furniture and the pool table was unexpected and brilliant.
Posted by Cindy J – June 16, 2008 3:31 PM
It's so nice to see Sparkle Josh again. I believe Scotty should have stayed and the girl who blamed everyone else should have gone. I agree that I was disappointed in Vern last night. Even when the blame-passing girl disagreed with him, she still got to stay. She was bossy and annoying. Scotty's room was not as bad as the judges said it was.
Posted by Maria – June 16, 2008 3:16 PM
Those two women should have both been sent home for what they did to that beautiful wood dining room table. I couldn't believe they painted it--that was a design atrocity. Their second atrocity was what they did to the fireplace--disgusting. They should have been sent home for crimes against furniture.
I didn't particularly like Scottie's room, but it was a complete design. Maybe if he had put three vases on the wall instead of one, Vern would have liked it.
Posted by San Diego – June 16, 2008 3:05 PM
I am very disappointed it who got cancelled! Scottie did the room by himself and got it done on time and it was finish! He was the only black person, enough said. I love to watch the show but not anymore. I can't believe a person that finished the room alone was booted and the dinning room had two people and was not finish! Hummmm

I have 3 issues:
1) Another poster said this regarding Scotty > Exactly! Design, skill, and talent have no "race". To continually put forth this opinion only perpetuates the mindset and ignorance.
2) Just as "there's no crying in baseball" (Tom Hanks, A League if Their Own), there's no crying on a job interview! And that's what this is. A job interview.
3) I applaud Cynthia's confidence in herself for her chosen style.

I agreed with Tracee that everyone was ignoring her. And likeable as he is, Litte Mr. "It's Official, I'm awesome" was goofing off a lot. I find Trish a lot more annoying than I anticipated; almost as annoying as Stephanie. There's no one that seems to me to deserve their own show. I say when it comes down to the vote, we do a write-in and give the show to Sparkle Josh! He has the talent, the looks and the showmanship!

NO she would redo it and suck it up, its what the client wants and to see someone sniveling all the time would put me right off.Scotties room was not that bad, i think Tracee, is it?? should have gone, she flat out lied and blamed everyone but herself, then walked out cos someone said they would not pick her to work with. Nor would i!!!!!!!!!!! Great 2nd episode though.

It's unfortunate that the rooom done alone cost him. He should have listened to the 2 other guys that said pick another color and spacially he could have been more original. I am with vern on the end to end bed since they are at the house full stage. The lounge concept would be great further down the line. I also didn't like the woman that cried about not being heard. Her ego will be her downfall if she doesn't learn to work the team angle. They went with her chocolate brown paint idea and she still tried to pin her choice on the other team members. Seems like that pool table saved the day. Can't wait for the next episodes to see how the "builders" come out.

I liked Scottie's rust and brown 70's style room. I'm not sure why the judges had a problem with the color. I thought it was beautiful, though it didn't have the sophistication of silver leaf or copper paint. Should a dorm room setting have the same sophistication of a formal dining room? I don't think so. It was a sleek, fun design and concept with a 70's punch, and I think there were others who should have gone.

I was very disappointed in the judges on this first show. I do agree the bedroom was not to my taste, but he accomplished a completed room alone that was at least presentable. I am a big fan of Vern but was disappointed in him tonight.
He is usually so fair. That dining room was a disaster and all the tears were a little inappropriate for the first show. I am a 60 year old grandmother but give me a finished pulled together room anytime over that mess.
