Sleepless Nights.

Guest Blogger: Design Star  Guest Blogger: James Bolosh, VP, Event Programming HGTV

Can you imagine what it must feel like to be Jennifer and Matt right now? For a moment, try and imagine yourself in their shoes. Both have put everything on the line — and their lives on hold — to follow their dream of becoming HGTV’s newest Design Star. I spoke to both season one winner David Bromstad and last year’s winner Kim Myles during this time, and I know the pressure they felt during this period was intense. Then, add to this the emotions their family and friends are experiencing, and this makes them a tightly wound bundle of emotion. Heavy stuff. A big congratulations to both Jennifer and Matt on their success and for giving our two New Orleans families, the Gowlands and the Oleagas, beautiful spaces they can now call home.

The Oleaga and Gowland families with Matt and Jennifer in New Orleans.

As much as we all get caught up in who is going to be the next HGTV Design Star, our hearts and prayers go out to the many folks still struggling in New Orleans. A big thank you to everyone we worked with in this amazing city to help make this final episode a reality. And, to quote Mr. Gowland, we hope we were able to help bring the struggle to “get their families whole again,” back to the forefront and remind everyone that the people of New Orleans still need our help.

The Design Star Bond.
Jen and Matt have forged an amazing friendship and bond. Both represent the true integrity, character, creativity and talent that represent an HGTV Design Star. I suspect the vote will be very close this year and it will be hard to see one of them go. But in the end only one person can be named HGTV’s newest Design Star.

Matt or Jennifer? Your vote decides who will be the next Design Star!

On a personal note, I’ve been with the show since it was just an idea floating around in an e-mail. Seeing it grow into a national phenomenon is incredible. This season has been another huge success and a show we’re all proud of it here at HGTV. A big thank you to all of our viewers for tuning in each week and for all your thoughtful comments along the way. I don’t think everyone realizes what it takes to put on a production this big, and we always hope to both entertain and inspire you. Your passion for our network inspires us to do what we do on a daily basis.

America, the decision is now in your hands. I look forward to hearing who you’ve chosen.

Thanks for watching!

I can not believe the comments some of you make. Jen's teeth have nothing to do with design. This wasn't a beauty pageant. These people were there for their design talent. And every one knows Jen is talented. They all were. MikeyV too. And he got treated very disrespectfully. I liked them all, but get over it people. Only one person could win. I do hope that her show is better than Kim Myles' tho. She seems to do the same design every week, and she has a fixation with green. But I couldn't do that good. I do know that whoever makes the comments about Jen being able to chew thru a picket fence has never really seen protuding teeth. I love her smile. She does have a whiny voice, but it's not like we have to live with her....

What happened to Mikey V? No mention - except "he is not with us"? Just curious?

Posted by Anne – August 6, 2008 6:41 PM

The outcome of DS III seemed rigged. What melodrama! Mikey V desrved better treatment and acknowledgement, too; what claptrap!

Posted by Salem – August 6, 2008 3:37 PM

I can't believe all the mean things said about Jen and Matt too, especially about Jen because she won. America voted ... bottom line. You don't like her teeth, her laugh, etc. I think she's a genuine non-superficial person who's passion for design is refreshing. Yes, Candice Olsen is tops for me too and I hope that Jen would stand shoulder to shoulder ... which they physically can't do ... but as for her show I hope that her show will be equally as good as Ms. Olsen's. I'm rooting for Jen to bring something new here where she makes a statement for herself in her design unlike Myles of Style. Colour Splash is okay however there is room for improvement. I liked this season the best of all 3 Design Star shows. I liked all of the contestants and I think they should bring them all back to do a "Special Reunion Makeover" show with all of them. I think that would be a hoot until then, if it ever happens, I look forward to Jen's show and who knows maybe we'll be seeing Matt and Tracee and even colorful Michael on tv somewhere. Ending on a good note here I'm also looking forward to Design Star #4.

I can not believe the snide comments being made about people. Don't you all really have anything better to complain about? Jennifer's teeth? Please people, can't you play nice?

Posted by Deb – August 5, 2008 12:56 PM

I would just like to know what happen to Mikey V. Their was no mention of him no nothing ,how disrespecful why couid'nt the show have Clive say he's working or something. He made it all the way to episode 5 .Whether he wanted not to be or could'nt be there something should have been said in recognition of his contribution to the show. that's all I would lie to know.Other than that great season.

I began to question the DS show intentions during DS-2. What does design mean to you and your staff? It appears that the drama is more important than presenting to the viewers the individual talents of each contestant. Kim was a hair stylist. How did she become the new DS? How was she even a contestant?

Even if one didn't like Matt's style, viewing his website shows how talented Matt is as a designer and a very skilled carpenter. Wow, to say that Matt could be Kim's and/or Jen's carpenter, and that IKEA has better designs than Matt can create, shows a lack of knowledge about good design.

I congratulate Jen, but I'm not convinced that Jen will bring anything different to HGTV viewing.

If DS-4 begins like DS-2&3, I won't be watching.

Posted by robbin – August 4, 2008 6:24 PM

Trish should have won, not Jennifer.

Posted by EK – August 4, 2008 4:37 PM

Watching Jennifer is tantamount to watching Roseanne Barr when she first started in standup. They share the same nasel voice, overuse of the word "like" and the self contratulatory habit of laughing the hardest at their own jokes. That said, and besides the fact that I don't find her the least bit photogenic, (that girl could eat apples through a picket fence with those teeth), what she fails at most is innovative design. However, she is a winner when it comes to being even more annoying than Kim Myles. She's got that "in the bag." So congratulations, Jennifer. Looks like we will have one more show on HGTV to lower the bar. And it's really too bad, because there is a lot of a talent and personality in the design world today. HGTV just hasn't yet mastered the ability of tapping into it. In MY most humble opinion, that is!

Posted by Axelle – August 4, 2008 4:24 PM

What a big mistake! Jens' voice and laugh are so irritating that she will not keep viewers interested in her show. She tends to laugh her way through everything and that gets old very quickly!Matt was more sincere, talented and would have kept viewers interested in his show..

Posted by Susan – August 4, 2008 4:03 PM

I voted for Matt so I was a little disappointed that Jen won, although I had the feeling she was going to do just that. Her voice irritates me so I probably won't be watching her show. I've watched each season but for some reason I don't watch the new shows created for the winners.

Posted by Becky – August 4, 2008 1:31 AM

I think that HGTV picked Jennifer to win many weeks ago. I just don't get it. They continued to think that her T.V. hosting was better when it was not. She seems like trailer trash to me. Matt had better designs and is a carpenter as well. I just don't feel like America really had a say in this after all.

Posted by Lorey Seals – August 4, 2008 1:18 AM

Matt's designs were very simple and he has no style at all. IKEA is more stylish! Less has to be classy too. Jennifer has real promise. Her designs were thoughtful and sometimes unique. No one on HGTV comes close to Candice Olsen though. Somehow all the Canadians are far superior. I also like the designers on My Parent's House. They really incorporate what their clients are like as poeple and make it personal. There ar no American designers who do this on their shows. David is all about his artwork and too much color, Vern about candles and too dark rooms. Candice always surprises with new and innovative ideas, fabrics and products.

I missed the first few minutes, Why wasn't Mikey in the finale?
He was a major contestant and very talented.

Posted by max – August 4, 2008 1:14 AM

Andy Greenberg,

To answer your question about the chandelier, it is a Geometrix (by Schonbek) chandelier. It was bought at Shelton's Gallery in Metairie, New Orleans. You can visit the Schonbek website to find a Geometrix dealer near you, or you can contact Shelton's Gallery! We would be glad to help you with one!

Posted by lindsey – August 3, 2008 11:47 PM

My family is so disappointed that Matt didn't win!!!! He was not only talented, but so much more articulate than Jenn. We wish Matt the best of luck with his career!

Note to HGTV: This is one family that won't be watching Jenn's show. . . just like we're not watching Kim's show!

Posted by Suzey – August 3, 2008 11:45 PM

I would have been happy with either contestant/designer winning, but I did prefer Jennifer just slightly. I am sure Matt is going to go on to great things, too. Congratulations, Jennifer! And, Matt, all the best to you!!

Posted by Luv2decorate – August 3, 2008 11:38 PM

I am so dissappointed. Matt is a much more better designer. Jen will be great at hosting a show and decorating, but I would call on Matt to design my home. I'm so sorry that you did not win Matt. You said that you may come back, well if you could, please return to show America that you were the true Design Star!

I was so tired and stayed up to watch the show what a dissappointment.

Posted by Michelle B. – August 3, 2008 10:56 PM

Congratulations Jennifer. I voted for Matt. Her voice is very annoying but that's just me. I can't watch Rachael Ray either, her voice is annoying to me also. Jennifer can be and will be successful even with the horrible sounding voice. I like both ladies but whenever I hear RR on my TV the channel gets changed. I will try to watch, perhaps if she's really good I can mute the sound.

Posted by Loren – August 3, 2008 10:36 PM

so what the heck is wrong with the sound on the finale????????? digital is out on comcast local tonight, so we are watching on the analog hgtv station. wow, the distortion and production factor (pause, laugh tracks sounding similar to old three stooges episodes, clives predictable set ups for commercial breaks) reminds me of our local fox news at 10. did we give the assignment of the design star finale to the 10th grade yearbook class at farragut high school in knoxville?? if "screaming clive" hosts next year, i'm done. i'll watch the first one to see if "but fuhrst - clive" is on and if so, I'M DONE!!! and if matt yells woohoo again i'm screaming yoohoo as i turn it off. with all the quality shows produced by hgtv i'm astounded at how the budget was pulled from this one half way thru the season. surely "woohoo" won't have his own show next season.

Posted by don – August 3, 2008 9:50 PM

To truly decide on the best designer the show needs to be re-vamped! I'd say no one should go till they are seen in 2 individual challenges and 2 group challenges. If someone is going to host a show they do need to show ability, leadership and the ability to use feedback from judges. By kicking one person off each show we get no chance to see them grow.I'd love to see a challenge in which each person designed an identical room and was directed to take a risk. If there was no one kicked off after the show we'd see more of what each designer is made of come out. Rating the designers on risk taking, creativity, listening to clients, opperating under pressure, group dynamics etc. would be great. I do not know who to vote for, was out of time so missed the show and wasn't home in time to catch the re-run.

Posted by Bonnie – August 3, 2008 9:07 PM

Matt won in my eyes during the first show. What he lacks in some areas, he makes up for in ideas! Jennifer surprised me with her final design but I think her personality and appearance is to sloppy for TV, on the other hand she has good energy. Matt is nice and thoughtful, which shows when he wanted help for Jennifer with her kitchen design.

Matt just shines, is warm and inviting. GO MATT!!! I'd love to see him win tonight. I read some comments that they should work together, I like that idea.

Posted by Gwyneth – August 3, 2008 7:12 PM

Of course the voting button is flawed. They don't want you to vote for free, but text message your vote, because that will make money for ?????
So many of the shows are doing this, including my two favorite dancing shows. Just put up a panel of judges who critique the entrants and let the viewers vote. Shows that don't do this are Project Runway and "please pack your knives and leave". I respect them so much for that. HGTV, I loved when you let the fans vote on the color of the Master Bedroom for DH07 and the color for the exterior of the Green Home.
HGTV, hope you will listen to your fans and make Matt and Jenn co-hosts on a show. They are great. Ooohh, but there's those votes?

Posted by HGTV FAN – August 3, 2008 7:01 PM

I want to congratulate both Matt and Jennifer. They both are fantastic designers. On the last show they both did such an amazing job that I did not know who to vote for. I would have had to vote for them both. Congratulations to whom ever wins. You both are fantastic!

Posted by Ann – August 3, 2008 5:47 PM

I was very fond of BOTH of them. They both deserve shows. Both are very genuine, charming people. I voted for Jen because I think she executed the final challenge better--I LOVED the red cabinets and I think the family loved the seating in the living room. But Matt is a sweetie too. I'll be watching!

Posted by Marcia – August 3, 2008 3:51 PM

I would like to see more individual challenges as well. With so much work still to be done in New Orleans, and with all the flooding in the midwest this year seems like the show could use this to showcase the designers and help our nation at the same time. What a waste of time, effort and money to "design a cube".

I am sure many of the paint, floor, appliance & furniture store would be willing to donate to this project as they receive some wonderful advertising in exchange. Many other people I know patronize the companies we see helping people instead of just worrying about how much PROFIT they make.

And please lose the "drama", if I wanted to watch that there are 100s of other channels to choose from. I want design!

Posted by KimmyD – August 3, 2008 3:51 PM

Many have suggested that Matt and Jen be accepted as a tie and share a show. Doesn't anyone remember how Jennifer and her husband auditioned together hoping to be a team? Do you really think she would want to team up with Matt INSTEAD of her designer husband if she were to win?

Both did great jobs in many of their efforts this year. I was blown away with Matt's last hosting presentation--so much better than what he did other weeks. He got my vote, though I will watch either show. This year was more of a class-act than last year.

Posted by Carolyn – August 3, 2008 3:30 PM

Like a lot of others I had a hard time choosing between Matt and Jen. What I'd really like is for them to co-host a show. Wouldn't that be a perfect solution? Good luck to both of then!!

Two words, contestants - TINTED PRIMER!

Posted by Kathi – August 3, 2008 11:44 AM

After reading several posts, which I love reading all the diferent opinions,I guess it's my turn.I to am a HGTV addict, one of my TVs are always tuned in!.
First off I think that the different challenges are to see different things about them like seeing what they can do in a pintch by going to the dollar store, craft store etc.I liked the idea I read about the flea market that would be fun.
I to had a hard time choosing, I voted for Jen, that is after I saw the black on black dot under there pix. When it got down to four I was going for Trish. I was sorry to see her go.
I'd love to see a reunion show with some of the favorites like sparkle Josh,Trish,And that girl,I cant remember her name, from last season, who didn't listen to clients wishes for that wedding reception presentation and was the first of two who went.I don't think one mistake makes you a bad designer.Give some another chance.
As for this season, after looking at both designers web sites, I hope I voted right. Matt had a lot more pix and they were very good. I guess we'll see sunday.

Posted by Krissy – August 3, 2008 1:28 AM

I voted for both Matt and Jen. I couldn't choose between them.
I do think this was the lamest season. No really exciting designs. The previous seasons I knew exactly who I wanted halfway thru. If the judges keep a troublemaker next time for drama I will be a dropout. There was no reason to keep Tracee. I thought she should have the first to go with a brown sunroom.
I think it would be interesting to give each one a house to work on that's for sale. Even better not the new houses, but old ranch houses in developments. Real design for regular people.
Jen's design for her sister was realistic. The judges complained about the carpet. This is so funny. When I bought my house in 1986 people were stunned by my hardwood floors and not one person liked them. I need them for my allergies.
Now it seems wall to wall carpet is taboo for designers. Millions of people like it! That is especially true for families with small children who play and crawl on the floor.

I tried to vote. The buttons did not work.

Posted by DD – August 3, 2008 12:14 AM

I have been very disappointed with this season's show. I thought there was some interesting contestants, especially Mikey V., but never felt any really had a chance to exhibit their talent. I hope the producers will take a real hard look at this show and revamp the format. As I read thru the above comments I see that I am not alone. I think it would be fun to bring back some of the more interesting contestants from previous scenes and give them another chance. I also thought that the majority of the contestants this year really lacked personality! I will watch the show no matter what, but it really was a yawner this season. Thank you for coming to New Orleans and helping out these most deserving families. Why not set up shop down here. There are tons of spaces that need to be redone. And we have lots of cool sources of interesting furniture, accessories, art, etc. I loved the idea about using the flea markets as sources of furniture, etc. Also, would like to see more individual challenges. Come on down!!!!!!!!

Posted by Martee – August 2, 2008 9:41 PM

I went back and reread Betsy Brewer's post of July 28 and completely agree. We watch to learn. We are people who seek out this information. If we wanted drama we would watch another channel. I was appalled to see Tracee grabbing things off the shelves as they caught her eye and calling that shopping. And Matt couldn't have looked more impatient to get out of the store with the game table. He didn't even notice it needed high chairs and the style was all wrong for his room. Speed kills. And its not good for design either. What a ridiculous deadline to do a kitchen, a living room and a dining room. It is not fair to the family or to the designer. HGTV should listen to the people who care about improving the show.

Posted by MsTab – August 2, 2008 8:31 PM

I did not vote this time-both were good-have them
share a show

Posted by LAB – August 2, 2008 7:51 PM

These comments are GREAT! The last four designers were fabulous! Gladly, I would welcome each of them to work in my home! I would have had them all to my home and given each a room – they would have had to work around the same style and maybe colors, but each could have added their own touch of style! Still somewhat a "team" challenge; yet, individual as well.
I love the idea posted about a housing development and giving the designers each a home - there are PLENTY of new housing developments in WA! Come on up!!

Posted by MK – August 2, 2008 6:35 PM

I prefer Matt to Jennifer. Jennifer is great and all but shes just like everyone else. A designer who designs!! Matt builds amazing things that sets him apart!! But they both did a great on the last challenge!!!!!!!

Posted by Lou – August 2, 2008 6:09 PM

Jenn's designs are so beautiful and more to my taste. However Matt plays to his client's taste. Form follows function. I am not a minimalist person though I would love to design a room out of my realm of "cottage" design. However I think Matt is a master of minimalism and the rooms he designed in New Orleams were phenomenal. I LOVED the chandelier, though it is not something I would have done for myself. I knew from the first week he would be a contender. Very charismatic, but not in a flashy way. The likability factor is strong. Jen has a fantastic smile and great talent too. It is a win/win situation.

Posted by Linda Hoppe – August 2, 2008 4:10 PM

How about the "Matt and Jenn" show - or the "Jenn and Matt" show? They click so well together - and each have strong talents that complement one another. I think a co-host deal would be the best. It would be a fun and wonderful show! Besides, I can't decide to vote for because I really really like them both - and for very different reasons!

Posted by Carol – August 2, 2008 1:49 PM

Both Matt and Jenn did a wonderful job and have such gracious personalities! I voted for Matt as often as I could remember as I prefer his problem solving/contemporary designs which have much POP and glam!! He is kind, humble and just draws you in to what he is doing with design. While Jenn is artistic, I feel her designs are too traditional and I'm not into the flowery things on walls. I would watch either one however! David is my second favorite designer after Candice - their designs make me cry they are so great!! I've never watched Kim - just don't like her style or personality. Thanks HGTV for such a great show!

Posted by Susan Perkins – August 2, 2008 1:37 PM

OH! Its amazing how soon we forget. I went back and viewed some of the episodes. And it was clear that Matt and Jen almost blew it, more than once. I was thinking it was Trish who put that leather sofa in Sara Evans suite! MY BAD, it was her team that did the best, and Jen and Matt were opposite, and it was the worst! So Im going back to my original stance, it should have been Trish that won this. Trish, Dont give up! You looked great on TV and I admired the way you handled every situation! My husband and I really thought you would win. You should have aleast made it down to the final TWO.
Best wishes to Trish and Micky V!
Love ya!

Posted by Deborah B – August 2, 2008 5:41 AM

Ok - Jen and Matt are adorable, but did you notice that if you pluck matt's eyebrows a little and give him a Jen wig, they are the same person? The same for their designs - red, simple, etc. I can't tell who did what; they looked the same. I think three rooms was too much for them to have a voice. Let's make it Design Impossible rather than Design Star. I have no interest in watching either person's new show because I can be more creative than what they showed in the end. It was like visiting mobile home show rooms.
And, what is going to happen this year with Vern Yip's show's gimmick of we surprised you by doing two rooms? I see some mad poor person beating him up because he only did one room. "what - you weren't faking us out and only did the bedroom???!! You ^%$%##@!!!!"

Posted by Justyn – August 2, 2008 1:16 AM

I enjoy both Matt and Jen. I go back and forth on who I would enjoy more. I wish they both could get a show. Actually, I wish Trish and Jen could get their own shows and then Matt and Mikey V could do a show together. I thought they complimented each other very well and worked fabulous together.

My only issue is with Matt. Please someone tell him to stop wearing a t-shirt on his head!!!! OMG!!! I wan't to slap it off every time he does it. He is a handsome man and that is soooo distracting and detracting. What about a ball cap or bandana???? Come on...If Matt get's his own show, please make it contingent on no more t-shirt head gear!!!!!

Posted by Cittie – August 2, 2008 12:53 AM

I was unable to watch the show after Matt's show got cancelled and there was just Trish and Jen....
Then all of a sudden there IS Matt and Jen?????

How did Matt get "back in the running"?

Posted by Nancy – August 2, 2008 12:02 AM

In Design Star IV, doing away with the group challenges isn't a good idea for one reason. There isn't the time nor resources to give everyone clients during a show. Group challenges show the judges whether or not an participant can work with others- a skill which is crucial to a designer. If a designer can't show others the value of his/her work then perhaps that designer isn't a "star" or if one runs roughshod over others then he/she might not be someone the studio wants working with homeowners on a weekly basis.

Posted by Julie – August 1, 2008 10:24 PM

My vote goes to Jen. She delivered what she promised to the family. Her kitchen was great, not to mention the fireplace! Her colors are always good, and she understands tones, textures, layering and window treatments. Her only problem was the size of the couch, and in real life, she would have returned it for another.
Matt, on the other hand, always over promises and underdelivers. His designs usually have only one good detail. In this challange, he didn't use his own designing skills at all. He shopped, and not well. He doesn't even know what "minimalist" means in design language! Minimalist is always done with very modern funishings and a great amount of modern architectural detail. The judges didn't seem to realize that. "Plain" and underdecorated do not equal "minimalist." And finally, that chandelier, though pretty, would not fit the bill. The living room looked empty and dull. His window shades were all wrong and cheap-looking. And that mirror-like wall piece looked ridiculous with the TV under it. Did I say "finally"? No, there's more: I hated the ugly brown of the kitchen cabinets.
I wonder if HGTV goes back to really finish those rooms. I hope so. Contestants just don't have the time to complete the job. I believe there were ugly flourescent fixtures on the ceilings--more lamps were needed in the living room and spotlights in the kitchen. Oh, at least I hope someone went back to give both families tile backsplashes to make their kitchens shine. These families deserved the best.

The Design Star lake house was furnished with a work area for the designers. Did they ever use it?

This whole season was a bunch of "fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants" challenges. No one designs that way. The client's desires and needs need to be incorporated into the design as well as the designer's thoughts and style. None of these were apparent on this season.

I would have liked to see these designers actually design. What a concept! (Yes, that was sarcasm.)

Like last season, too many group challenges and not enough individual challenges. The challenges are so predictable now. Design your living space; divide into groups and do a living area; here are so many identical cubicles, design using only this store; down to two groups and do kitchens. YAWN!

(BTW, no one can do a kitchen properly in a few days. It's not fair to the client when done that way.)

The same judges for three seasons. YAWN!

Matt and Jen? I think they played it way too safe. I think that Matt has lots of innovative and problem-solving talent that we never got to see fully. Jen has artistic talents that we never got to see fully. Why? No time, playing it safe especially after the judge's criticisms, not enough back-up support.

Instead of setting the contestants up to bomb out, give them a chance to shine and show their best.

Instead of shopping at a dollar store, specialty store, or craft store for their little cubicle challenge, set them free for a morning at a 10-mile flea market (lots of states have them) and let their creativity fly.

As a nice bonus, I would love to see the judges compete with the contestants on the same challenges and have the contestants judge the judges' work.

Posted by t – August 1, 2008 4:45 PM

I loved the final show. Both designs were great in their respective styles. I don't care for minimalism, but for those who do, Matt's designs really set a strong example. I loved Jen's space, espcially the red cabinets (again not to my personal taste, but just right for the family who's needs she was meeting).

I had to vote for Jen, but I like Matt's work, too.

I agree with everyone saying there should be more individual challenges for DS4! I know part of the problem is finding loctions and funds, but you are supposed to be a network devoted to creativity! Surely that includes creativity in producing DS4. Best wishes for the new season, and BEST WISHED TO BOTH JEN & MATT.

Im still confused as to why, when anyone left the show, they were interviewed, but not Trish. Whats up with that? And very surprised to see her come back to help. Seemed to me, there was some chemistry going on between her and Micky V. Anyone else catch that? I think she leaned on him heavily!
I think it was a great design show and my best wishes to whoever wins. Next season, lets not let this fun show turn into a Jerry Springer show!
Glad that Tracee had to go, and Michael! They were the worst! Personality had to play into this, and theirs was BAD. So it gets down to the two nicest ones, Im hoping for BOTH of them to get a show, or co-host. They both have style, just different. I only voted twice because I couldnt make up my mind, in the end, I went with Matt, because of his design and his humilty. Jen should never stop though! Maybe a little less "drawing". Not my thing. Whoever gets it, I will be watching their show! Which would not have been the case if Tracee or Michael had won.

Posted by Deborah B – August 1, 2008 12:26 PM

Jen should definately win! She has a great sense of style and I love her designs. Matt is a sweet guy and a good carpenter, but he has no sense of style. People confuse his lack of style with a minimalist viewpoint. His rooms are nice, but boring. They have no life. Best of luck Jen!

Dear HGTV -
I love both the final designers but prefer Jenn's styles. But there is no getting around that Matt is certainly gifted in his craft. I would be for a show with both of them now and then if a project was big -- I am also all for Mikey V being the carpenter as someone mentioned above.

I watch HGTV, look at the website for craft ideas, and make it a point to learn something new there almost every day there.

I really love HGTV's "start at home" theme. It is really about the people -- all of us. Way to go HGTV with all the differences you have made all over the place!! I am a BIG BIG fan!

THANK YOU!

I love Roxanna's comment on july 30. What a brilliant idea. DS4 should go to a new development and find identical houses and let each designer do a room for each episode. Very unique and would showcase each's creativity. I'll bet the developer would pop for the cost of furnishings just to have the exposure. Or the furniture could be returned to the store as long as it wasn't damaged and the designers still work on a budget. I also love the idea that the designer are assigned a certain design style to do and all are designed the same style and we can see each one's interpretation. Sorry, I forgot who had that idea. These ideas are so much better than any this year. And no stupid, time wasting jokes on the first episode.

I agree with all those people who thought it was a really hard decision to make between Matt and Jenn. However after checking out their respective websites, I was really impressed with Matt's work. Minimalism isn't my taste, but I can still appreciate amazing designs and innovative ideas. I think part of what clinched it for me was that Matt has created entire buildings and designed everything from custom lighting to curved wooden walls and everything was so cohesive(sp?). Some of his designs may have seemed under accessorized, but isn't that what minimalism is about? I think his personality matches his designs.I believe one of the judges said he had a very calm and zen-like hosting style which seems to me to match the uncluttered spaces of his designs. I do think the judges were a little unfair to criticize Jenn for always painting big artistic designs on the walls, because that is part of her style. I don't remember them criticizing Matt for doing everything too minimally. I think Jenn is an amazing artist and incorporating that talent into her designs is just a given. I wish the best to both finalists and look forward to seeing their show - whomever wins.

Matt Can't win.

He is the consumate Rube Goldberg designer. Utilizing everything up his arsenal, the simple becomes - mundane. He comes out... flat.

Give the girl with all the style a chance.

The guy can't even come up with a decent chapeau to cover his cueball. 'nuf said.

I totally agree that I'd like to see more individual challenges next season.

I love Davids show. He's real, he's fun and has a great personality. Kim, has a great personality but she does come up with some strange things I wouldn't want in my house.

I watch HGTV every day all day long. I have learned so much and love most of the shows. I would like to see the auction show be on a little later because it's a lot of fun.

I too would love to see Jennifer and Matt both win. They would compliment each others talents and have an awesome show.

As for the judges, mostly the female "design star". This woman needs a major attitude adjustment. I cannot believe she was one of the judges on this show. Her hairstyle totally fits her personality...a spoiled teenage brat. I don't recall ever seeing her design anything.

Also I feel like the eliminations were unnecessarily cruel. Wouldn't it be just as easy to say something kinder?

I was confused by all of the negative feedback from all of the judges and then suddenly all of the nice things said about Jenn and Matt? They certainly deserve it but I just feel like totally "beating up" up on the contestants isn't very professional. Surely there is a better way?

Vern dear, when you made the comment to Jenn about a horse with only one trick I nearly fainted. I love your show and the driving force behind it but really, please find something besides candle chandeliers, candles all over the place. No one wants to climb ladders to light candles. There are other alternatives.

Good luck Jenn and Matt. You're both great.

I voted for Jen right after the show and as many times as I could! I always loved all the designs she did on the walls and her color choices. Go Jen! Please win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mon. I voted for Jen and Tues I voted for Matt. Could not vote for one and not the other. Seems like a lot of viewers felt the same. Put them on a show together. They get along well together and can add to each other's many talents. 884527

I thought the final 2 in all 3 episodes were great and could have co-hosted and complimented each other for a fantastic finish on any project. In fact I think that the first year was the hardest decision I had in voting. They are all good, and have made a lot of people happy.

Posted by Cheri – July 31, 2008 3:10 PM

I really think HGTV will be missing the boat if they don't give the show to BOTH Matt and Jen, they would make a dynamite duo. MUCH better than prima donna David who think he's giving America a thrill by showing off his muscles and cutesy smile, GAG!! And KIM, she needs to go back to doing hair. If this is what we have to look forward to from HGTV rather than genuinlly talented people then I'll just have to go watch something else. ENOUGH with the amatuers. I'm THAT good.

DS show staff...it is your responsibility to inform the viewers/voters of DS contestants fairly. You have projected your personal opinion By labeling Matt the Master Carpenter and Labeling Jennifer the Master Artist. If you were really reading what some of the thought provoking intellient comments expressed in the various message boards, you would have changed the way that you refer to Matt and Jennifer. There are actually people expressing that Matt should be Jen's carpenter. Apparently, they have not looked at his website. Have you?

Posted by Robbin – July 31, 2008 1:11 PM

Please don't label Matt as Master Carpenter. He graduated from an Ivy League Univ. isn't it-Princeton Univ. His website proves that he is a skilled designer. Someone refferred to him as design engineer in one of the threads in the message board. He is not a carpenter. He is someone who has visions and skill in designing and building. That is not carpentry IMO.

Posted by otro – July 31, 2008 12:33 PM

Ev, I agree! I was very surprised when a viewer wrote in one of the message boards about being tired of hearing about New O and Katrina. Compassion? It makes all of this DS stuff...a little silly.........

Posted by Robbin – July 31, 2008 11:31 AM

Why is DS still labeling Matt as the Master Carpenter? It would bring more clarity for people who don't understand the difference between a carpenter, designer, and decorator to remove these descriptive labels. Referring to Matt as just a or a master carpenter when he is a skilled designer with incredible carpentry skills is misleading coming from the mouth of Design Star. All you would have to do is look at his website to see that Matt is the full package.

Watching the Design Star's last episode, I was appalled at the conditions of the housing. After 3 years of trying to get their lives back and the money that this country has given to Iraq, you'd think that we would take care of our own.

This is just another reminder of how little has been done to help our own. It's a crime! And it's time that our higher powers start to deal with our own problems instead of looking for defending some other country. Iraq war is draining us in more ways than we can count!

IT IS 7;50 AM AND I CAN'T VOTE OR EVEN FIND THE VOTING AREA ON WEDNESDAY MORNING. I UNDERSTOOD THE VOTING WAS TILL 10 AM EASTERN TIME. AS FAR AS VOTING IS CONCERNED, I THINK I VOTED, BUT NEVER GOT A CONFIRMATION THAT I HAD VOTED. VERY POOR DESIGN OF A VOTING SITE.

I DID ENJOY THE SHOW THIS SEASON, BUT AGREE WITH MOST THAT INDIVIDUAL WORK WAS HARD TO JUDGE AS WE ONLY HAD ONE SHOW HIGHLIGHTING THEIR TALENTS.

Posted by JEAN – July 31, 2008 8:59 AM

Overview: This year was NOT good. Give us design, not drama. Solo efforts can only tell what each can do and the show goofed on that one big time! The best was Sara Evan's suite and guess who was most responsible? Tracee and Mikey V.! Not a great designer in the bunch. Nobody like Kim or David. Better luck next year!

I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN SEEING BOTH MATT AND JEN WORK TOGETHER ON THE SAME DESIGN SHOW. THEY ARE EQUALLY TALENTED ARTISTS AND BOTH HAVE NICE PERSONALITIES. I FEEL THAT THEY WOULD COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER ON A SHOW.
I PERSONALLY LIVE HGTV AND IT IS MY FAVORITE CHANNEL. I LEARN SO MUCH FROM ALL THE SHOWS AND HAVE EXECUTED MANY OF THE IDEAS IN DECORATING MY OWN HOME. VERN HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF MY FAVORITE DESIGNERS. I DO MISS TRADING SPACES AND DEAR FRANK. LOVED HIS DESIGNS TOO. WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO HIM? WOULD LOVE TO KNOW. PAIGE I COULD DO WITHOUT BECAUSE I ALWAYS THOUGHT SHE WAS UNDERFOOT AND INTHE WAY. CUTE THO.
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK AND I HOPE BOTH DESIGN STARS WIN

Posted by Myrna Coan – July 30, 2008 9:35 PM

I can't decided between the two. They both have such excellent and unique qualities that fit so well together. Matt is hard-driving, practical with clean masculine thoughts and designs, and Jenn makes a beautiful warm place, with more feminine touches. I'm not voting because I like them both so well. I'd like to see them both work together to create spaces. Please give them both the show and lets see what they could create together. I know it would be 10X better than some of those other people you have on your channel.

Posted by Marcia – July 30, 2008 7:32 PM

This by far was the worst Design Star that could happen. As a fanatic HGTV viewer for many years, I watched a few episodes and gave up! the final show was terrible, because the designs were terrible! TOTAL WASTE OF TIEM!

Posted by Sheri – July 30, 2008 6:59 PM

I'm with others who think Matt and Jennifer should both win and host a show together! That would be great. They have both shown themselves to be above the rest when it comes to talent, ability to shine under pressure, and compassion.
Go Jen and Matt!!!

I have watched Design Star since the beginning and I also enjoy Color Splash and Myles of Style. I think it would be a nice change to have both Matt and Jennifer work and host a show together. They get along and work so well together that I think their show would be fun.

Posted by ellen – July 30, 2008 5:36 PM

I seem to recall that the runner up from season one ended up getting a show several months after Color Splash premiered. No matter who wins this one, I hope that the powers that be will find a place on HGTV for the runner up from this year's competition. I felt that both Matt and Jennier did wonderful work and either would make a great host for a new HGTV show.

I don’t care if Matt or Jennifer wins as I won’t watch either’s show given the same formulary we see week after week. However, if there was a show on how to cut up lumber, rearrange cabinetry or lay flooring, then I might watch Matt’s show if this was his premise. As for Jennifer, if she had a show which showed how to paint on walls giving the walls a 3-dimensional look; I’d watch her show for tips. But as a straight design show, neither can pull that off, week after week, after week. Trust me, they are no David Bromstad.

As for the judges, please. Vern ragged and ragged week after week. He criticized both Jennifer and Matt on several occasions and now he says these are the two best contestants we’ve ever had on Design Star? What a hypocrite! The producers probably won’t loose Vern as I bet he has a monetary stake in the program. If so, don’t allow him to take over the commentary next year. His snitty and snide comments are unkind and cruel and certainly not helpful. All his comments did was make the contestants play it safe. And please producers, loose the other two women. Get fresh blood pumped into the judging. Neither woman contributes anything useful to any of the designers; nor, if they do have any comments, they are overturned by Vern’s insidious remarks. By the way using past winner won’t work as was suggested in several of the blogs below. The past winners (David and Kim) would be too intimidated by Vern to really speak their minds. Besides, David and Kim are way too polite to ever “criticize” another’s work.

PRODUCERS: read Betsy Brewer’s blog (July 28 at 9:09 p.m.). She says what need to be said in a nutshell. I agree with everything she says with one exception: I don’t think Kim talks down to the viewer but I do think some of those “creative” lamps she has her families do with feathers or glass beads or some such stuff are hideous.

Producers make Season 4 your most sensational to date. Do a glass design as you did for the finality in Season 1. Give each designer the opportunity to design their own specific rooms rather than doing “group” as often as you did this season. Lastly, don’t settle for that Survivor approach of pitting one another for ratings as you chose to do this year. We the viewers tune in week after week because we are interested in design, tips and seeing creative ability but are turned off by the nagging and ragging which went on this year.

Posted by Linda Puzio – July 30, 2008 2:24 PM

This was the most disappointing season of Design Star. Comments like "They've really stepped it up!" and "These are the best designers EVER!!" have me baffled. The season was too short with only one individual challenge before the final three did their family member's rooms. (Who needs an entire episode to meet the contestants?) The group efforts always end up a muddle where no one's aesthetic is really clear. When designers all are assigned an identical box and work independently you get a better idea of what they're made of. Some of the very best designs of the past seasons jump out in these solo efforts.

Posted by Daniel – July 30, 2008 1:21 PM

I feel that Jennifer and Matt each did an excellent job on the final challenge. Going back to the starting point - the ruined homes - I believe the designers laid the groundwork for these family to return to their home and personalize the spaces. I mention this because both final designs used few if any acessories, and this altered the impact of their designs. This may have been due, in part, to the size of the projects, but I feel it was a good thing to allow the families to add the final touches.

Looking at the entire series, I felt that many of the challenges were poorly chosen. The challenges appeared almost gimacky - especially the tag sale piece. I also feel that involving the designers' families was a generous touch - each family was left with a lovely new space - but I think it involved too many non-design elements to allow real design showcasing. It would be more effect to provide challenging spaces, assigned colors, etc. This was what worked so well on the first Design Star series.

Finally, I was totally put off by Tracee - certainly as person but also as a designer. (I hope HGTV went back and replaced the brown paint on the kitchen backsplash with some lovely tile.) Tracee diminished - physically and emotionally - everything with which she was involved. Certainly there will be competition and conflict, but this was real personality disorder scale.

I have loved HGTV's next design star from the very first season...and this season was no different...My husband and I have faithfully watched from the very first episode...I'm very unhappy with this whole on-line voting thing...I've tried mutiple times and it won't work...and from all the blogs, I guess it's not just a matter of operator error on my part. We wanted very badly to vote for Matt...and I feel it's very unfair for both contestants at this point when you tally the final votes, if a big HUGE part of america is trying to vote, but can't!!!! How will it be a fair vote? I think something should be done...so that the contest is fair for both contestants...and all those that are trying to vote - get heard!!! We shouldn't be forced to pay to vote via text message

Posted by Shelly – July 30, 2008 12:03 PM

I think Matt's enthusiasm seems forced. His dining room was way over done for that house. Rooms are not just spaces, they are parts of a whole. These people do not live in a New York high rise. I think if you were just judging the designs produced in the final episode Matt should win. If you look at the whole picture-- cohesion of design with the house and family, hosting ability, originality, then Jen should win. I voted for Jen.

Posted by sky – July 30, 2008 11:52 AM

I don't think Matt was trying to do Jen a favor when he let her have Mikey. Mikey had wanted to tile the kitchen project and Matt totally objected. In the end, the kitchen backsplash should have been tiled. I do not think they got along that great, and they had the same skill mix. I think Matt did not particularly want to work with Mikey. While he was doing Jen a favor, he was doing himself one also. Acting generous about it appeared to me to be an act.

Posted by sky – July 30, 2008 11:25 AM

After reading all the comments from the viewers I'd like to comment on previous winners. I, personally, do not like David or his designs. He gets on my nerves! I hate the muscle shirts and tatoos. Also. I won an art scholarship to the University of Kansas in art and have won many contests for my work. His paintings are not that good, folks. I've seen better work from highschoolers. Kim is a real cutie but I do not like her designs. As one viewer commented, they verge on tacky. I do not watch either show. As to Jen and Matt, I liked Jen's room better although she could have carried the red into the living area. I didn't care for Matt's living room. I felt it was blah. I liked both his and Jen's kitchens. I would prefer Jen's kitchen in my own home as it looked more homey. Both designers have good screen presence and personality. Either are good enough to win. I voted for Jen because of her artistic abilities. I'm sure that if she had larger budgets and enough time she would come up with fantastic work. However, I will watch the first episodes, whoever wins, to see if they truly deserved the win. Good luck Jen and Matt. I hope you are ready for the hectic life of a television star. Oh, by the way, Jen DID have a dining room big enough for the family - it was behind the sofa. The small round table WAS NOT the dining table. Also, there can be ONLY one winner and that's the way it should be!

Posted by Eleanor – July 30, 2008 11:13 AM

To get a much better idea of Jen's and Matt's qualifications, experience, and design abilities, review their bios on the HGTV D.S. website, and even more important, take a look at the websites for their real-world design businesses -- Matt's at mattlocke.com and Jen's at bertranddesigns.com. Both candidates are much more accomplished than was demonstrated on this year's poorly designed D.S. show, in my opinion.

Posted by Mildred – July 30, 2008 11:06 AM

For the next season, I would like to see some more realistic challenges where we can really see the differences between the designers. I like the challenges where they are starting with identical rooms--that way we can see the strengths and weaknesses of the individuals. How about giving each designer a whole (small) new house and let them do the whole thing, room by room. The show could focus on one room per episode. Forget the hokey things like whole room from a $1 store, but reward those who go out and use unique sources.

Posted by Roxanna – July 30, 2008 10:38 AM

The one thing that stood out for me in both designs was Jen's kitchen cabinets. Seeing those cabinets was a great selling point for someone to look at it and say "I can have red cabinets" because red is a color that people are afraid to use. Matt's cabinet would have been nicer if he had been able to use the red stain that he wanted but arose to challenge and came up with something else, a chocolate brown would have been better since he had to use paint but they came out pretty nice, The dining room was beautiful a table setting with that wonderful chandelier would have been nice or letting it stand on it's own. The vase was out of place. He was calmer and more focused when he hit a wall in his challenge and it had to be very hard work for both of them. I hope the best for them both and there can only be one. I will accept either.

Posted by Corinne – July 30, 2008 10:07 AM

After much consideration, I chose Matt as the next design star, because he has integrity, which reminds me very much of Vern. His small gesture of thinking of his oponents needs in the last showdown convinces me he's the right choice. Add to this Matt's abilities as a carpenter, and designer, makes him a perfect choice for the next HDTV Design Star show.

Posted by Alexandra – July 30, 2008 9:59 AM

Thanks to everyone for the voting advice--I was having trouble also.

As for white leather, I have had it for years. I raised five kids and have seven grandkids and it cleans like a dream. Go Jennifer for the great choice in upholstery.

But what happened with that arrangement??

And how is it possible that she has never done a kitchen before? Maybe it's because she has no training in design at all. She was an elementary teacher, not an interior designer. I think in many ways Jennifer is the real design star because she comes up with these things on her own.

Posted by Mimi – July 30, 2008 8:04 AM

Matt all the way for being selfless in giving Jem
Mike V (could she have done the same) her Red Hot Kichen was good , but not the other rooms they lacked color and these people are not afraid of color.Matt kichen was beautiful, LIving& Dinning breath taking!GO MATT! YOU HAVE MY VOTE.

Posted by chiko – July 30, 2008 7:51 AM

Please don't vote thinking Design Star will choose two. You will be wasting your vote. Neither will want to be second banana and it will cause tension that Design Star won't want to deal with. I vote for Jennifer because of her unique art talent. No other show has that. Matt has some great ideas but his execution falls short in function. For example the for poster with no ladder to get to the fifth bunk on top, the Thai room with nothing there or anything else, the dark leather sofa in the Shabby Chic room and having no dining room draperies in the last challenge. That dining room really needed them. Jen's show could demonstrate how to bring art into your home.

Posted by MsTab – July 30, 2008 7:34 AM

Day 4 and I still cannot vote. I am sorry Matt that you did not get my 4 votes and all the others that were not able to vote.

Now the judges. I cannot believe they think this years shows were better than the last two years. This year was boring and no imagination. The judges kept saying one thing and then holding it against the designers if they tried to do something out of the box, which was not often. I think the future shows should be judged by three designers from past shows. You all thought they were good enough to try to win so they should be good enought to judge future shows. I do believe that if a person runs from the interview in tears or self doubt, let them GO. Also if a deisned is in the bottom three times, it is time for them to go. In fact I feel they should be voted out the secone time. There are to many good designers out there to run after someone you know cannot make the grade. I think they should also end next year as they did year one. Making a room in a glass house was terrific and David did a GREAT job. David should be insulted by what the judges said and I hope he said so. I would not have voted for Jen but she is not "a one trick pony". I believe that if someone wanted drawn art on their walls, they would hire Jen.

Also do you believe that the designers have complete say so as to what happens on their shows? They do have producers and directors. So GO DAVID!! Vern I will not be watching you show.

OK, I dont know what changed, but I had no trouble seeing the vote button. If you typed it in like they said, it was right there, unless they changed it before I finally made up my mind who to vote for. I voted twice, and it was such a hard choice! Id love to see them both win, but both my votes went to Matt. Jen was awesome and I loved her Kitchen! Ill be happy for either one of them. Both of them made the best team players thru out, and I believe that played heavily on them being in the two finalist. I actually voted on the way they worked with others, as well as the design. Bad attitudes were NOT getting my vote, I dont care how good they were, I think the final thing for me was, how humble Matt was to give Jen the stronger partner when they brought back Trish and Micky V. I personally didnt care for Micky V's attitude. Seemed more like a leader of a gang or mob to me, not a designer. So for Matts humilty, he got all my votes.

Best wishes to BOTH who deserve!! I cant wait to see who the winner is! Its going to be one of the highest rated shows on TV that night, IM sure!
Jennifer, Please dont give up on your dream, remember you made it to the final TWO and thats something to be proud of! I love you too!

Not sure what is going on but since the last show I have been unable to vote on my computer. What's going on? I know it is not the computer because I can click on everything else on the site but the vote. Very disappointing. Wish my cell was working.

Posted by dar – July 30, 2008 7:02 AM

Not sure why this is not being posted? JB mentioned that the show hoped to entertain and inspire the viewers. Unfortunately, the entertainment became the drama which took away from the inspiration. HGTV DS show challenges did not allow the viewers to really see the true level of talent for each contestant. Since Matt and Jen see through a completely different lens, they would not make a good creative partnership. It was an injustice that HGTV DS labeled Matt the master carpenter and Jen the Master artist. Did they not look at their respective web sites? Matt is so much more than a carpenter and Jen is so much more than an artist. Viewers appeared to be stuck in the labels. It appears that the season was more about drama, as was season 2, than about true talent. Bummed!

The ONLY way I was able to see the buttons and actually place my vote in the orange area on my computer was to enlarge the viewing area to the largest size. Try it...It works! But, it took me TWO wasted days to figure this out.

Love the show. I have enjoyed every year, even my Dad watched it last year with me.
I was bothered with the manipulative, back biting things that went on. Michael is a good designer but he would pit contestants against eachother. Not cool. I want to see the designers work shine. And that means if they can't work together they will not be able to work with a client.

I hope that Design Star 4 remembers that they will "work" for Me, the viewer.

Posted by Holly – July 30, 2008 4:35 AM

I've read several of the blogs and am concerned about the number of people that think that the round, glass table that seats four, from Jenn, was the dining room. That table was in the living room area behind the sectional. Jenn got ripped-off because if you blinked, you missed it! I watched the re-run and there it was - Jenn's beautiful dining table and atleast 6 chairs. It seemed like she didn't get to present it or talk about it. Also, I'd like to know what kind of paint was used on the cabinets. I'd like to paint mine. My vote is for Jenn. Can't take Matt's goofy hats.

I agree with so many others here ... it should be the" Jenn and Matt" show!! They complement each other beautifully and they seem to have really bonded. It would be a novel idea and a great show!!!

The last 2 seasons have been a disappointment. The first season was great and I was so happy David won. I watch his show every week and am still amazed at his designs. The second season of design star was a disappointment. Kim was not my favorite. I tried watching her show but her designs where awful so I stopped watching after the first show. This season was a little better but not much. I liked Mikey V. and Trish and was disappointed to see them eliminated. I voted for Matt. I like his personality better. Jen just has that plastered on smile and I didn't think she was all that great in her designs. I think Jen will win but if she does I will not watch her show. Sorry Jen

I agree that Jennifer and Matt are both great designers, but I'm voting for Jennifer. I loved the white furniture (I have a lot of white furniture in my house), but I didn't realize that it wouldn't be appropriate for a large family with several kids, until I read the viewers comments. I would have never had a white sofa when my daughter was younger. Hopefully, next year Design Star will do away with the team challenges and only have individual challenges. Team challenges are completely unnecessary, as only individuals are picked for Design Star. I also hope that next year it will be a design show instead of a reality show. I'm really tired of each season having a "villain." Of course, I'm referring to Temple, Rob, and Tracee. It seems that Temple and Tracee were eliminated on the same episode and Rob was eliminated one episode later. They should have been eliminated earlier but I believe they were kept on the show to make things difficult for the other designers a little while longer. The producers evidently think this attracts viewers but judging from their comments it obviously doesn't. The absolute worst episode of all three seasons was when Rob was so cruel to Kim when they were doing a kitchen. My favorite designer overall has been Alice from season 1. I especially loved her Tiffany Box Blue room. I like David and his show but I didn't like those pictures with the weird looking abstract designs in them that he painted when he was on Design Star.

It was so refreshing in the last few shows to see the designers working together and actually helping each other out. I love the last 4 designers. I can't vote for either Matt or Jennifer because I think they are both great. It would be a great idea to have them both win. They could do a few shows together and then a few by themselves. They could also have Trish and Mikey V work with them on some of the designs. Then we could all have the best of Design Star. Best season season ever in my book.

I loved both designers. I just feel that Matt did the better job of listening to the family he was designing for. I loved the art piece on the wall in the living room and that dining room light was amazing. If Jen would have had the time it would have been nice to see some of her free style art work on one of the walls. The white couch was not a good choice for that big of a family. Good kitchen cabinets though. It would be great to see Mikey V on a show with the winner. I am sure he has talent we have yet to see.

I find it very hard to decide - both Matt and
Jennifer were very good, and had unique strengths. I thought Matt had excellent design problem solving skill, while Jennifer was warm, artistic and made spaces feel livable. I like the suggestions to keep both and add Mikey V to the mix - they would make a good team for a different kind of show.

Jen is awesome! I swore I would not watch Design Star this season because last season had such a ridiculously poor group of designers and none of last seasons designers came close to any one of these folks. I hope HGTV takes a look at the quality of their people this season and strive to do the same for the next season. A final suggestion - give these designers MORE TIME! Your time "crunch" does not help in any fashion. Your money would be better spent if you would allow these designers a few more hours. Sure, it's important to see who can work under pressure but why go to this extreme with time? Those red walls that Matt had painted were dripping because of the time element. He shouldn't have had to worry about "time" regarding walls. He did a super job and things like layers of paint could be done by someone in the middle of the night - just like the floors. He chose the paint color, others applied it - WHO CARES if they put a second or third coat on later - give it time to dry! A job well done by both designers but Jen gets my vote. Oh one more thing - was HGTV trying to keep Matt "in the closet" or just trying not to make it an issue?

Although I think both Matt and Jennifer did a great job on the final challenge, I really hope that Matt wins. I think his show will be full of creative solutions to design problems, and I think that his calm, informative style has staying power. Jenn's bubbly personality is cute and genuine, but I think it might wear thin over time. I believe I'll keep watching Matt for years and years because his ingenuity will keep me interested.

Although these competitors are extremely talented, my favorite is still David from the first design star. I voted for David and Kim so I must have some ability to see talent. Either that or I just got pretty lucky. Kim was articulate during the competition yet David is more and more articulate with each Color Splash episode.
Both Matt and, or, Jennifer would be great Design Star winner's. As the excitment grew closer to the end of the compitition Matt became illuminated and gratefull and appreciative and I decided to vote for him at that point. He was fair to let Jenn have Mikey V. first for the LA compitition. I felt this demonstated good character on his part and made him become a much more likeable person to me. I believe he was more than fair and sincere when he did this. When he stated how he was feeling blessed to have experienced this show, and how everything he has done in his life, has led him to this point, a bright look in his eye's made me feel that it is destiny for him to be right were he is. He followed his heart and I have a feeling that he is supposed to win this competition for many reason's that we don't even understand now but will get later. I know that Jennifer said she want's to win so bad yet she has a husband to go home to and they can work together as a team to enjoy designing. Matt sold his house and gambled everything I think he needs to win more than Jen but I could be wrong. I think this experience has been invaluable and theraputic for Matt with his family and he stated he doesn't take them or his friend's forgranted now. He's so honest you have to love that quality. I think no matter what, both contestants will grow emensely from this experience and it is definately meant to be part of life's journey for both of them.
On a totally different note, I feel compelled to mention that Mikey V. was a hard working, cool, caring, and appeared to be a great carpenter and shouldn't be ruled out for a possible assisstant in the future design star winner's future show's. I think with T.V. exposure and a couple of acting classes he could be the next Al Pucino he's tough and animated and could move to Hollywood and fit right in. It would be great to get him off the street's of Fort Lauderdale (they're getting much to dangerous and he's got too much to lose), it's time to move on and I hope some talent scout picks him out of the crowd and back's him.
The most rewarding and soul touching part of all these competition's has been helping these deserving families improve their life's in LA. New Orlean's is so far below sea level I think I would just run from there and relocate and start a new life, if I were them, yet being so involved within their communities it's easier said than done. Thank God Design Star spent their money for such an admirable purpose.
I look forward to Sunday's annoucement of the design star winner and look forward to the next season of Design Star!!!

After watching every season of Design Star, this was the best!! (except for Tracee - bad attitude to say the least!) Both Matt and Jen deserve to have thier own show!! And they can use Miky V as the carpenter for both shows! HGTV needs designers like them to replace shows like Design on a Dime :( Hidden Potential and the like.
We need more Candence Olsen type designers!! She can do no wrong in my opinion.

I've been a super Design Star fan since day one and have never missed an episode. Both Matt and Jennifer seem like truly good people. My choice for this year is Matt. I love Jennifer's spirit and winning personality, but I wished she had taken more chances for the finale and created the beautiful wall art she has created in the past. I thought the judge's comment in a previous episode about her being careful not to always incorporate that art in her designs and that it might make her a one trick pony was unfortunate. Her Italian pottery wall art was so spectacular, and the wall design she did for her sister's home was fantastic! I'm sorry she didn't just do what she knows and pull out all of the stops for the final challenge. The striped design was nice but so safe. While I thought her kitchen was great, it was so safe as well. Her couch sectional and too small dining table seemed really wrong to me. Matt really stepped up to the plate when he designed that sewing and craft room for his mom. I thought he had been given an impossible task and he hit a home run there. And, judges, I loved the four dark brown leather chairs he used in the room! His final design was gorgeous and beautifully put together. I think his on camera presence is terrific -- he's very upbeat and charismatic to boot. Whoever wins ... I can't wait to see what happens next on HGTV!!!

I can't find any buttons to vote online. The instructions refer to a white button, Mildred above says she found a black button. I can't find either and when I click on the buttons to "find out why Jen or Matt should win" it just takes me back to the top of the existing screen. The online voting system is total broken!!! And I refuse to pay to text my vote.

JB mentioned that the DS show hopefully entertained and inspired the viewers. Unfortunately, the entertainment became the drama that took away from being completely inspired by the DS challenges. I don't believe that the DS show reflected the true talent of the contestants. Although, both talented, Matt and Jen would not make good creative partners. They see through a very different lens, which would not necessarily be compatible.

Posted by Robbin – July 29, 2008 11:00 PM

I have tried for three days to vote but cannot do so. How can this be a fair contest? It's a waste of time to even try.

Posted by Marlene – July 29, 2008 10:46 PM

I personally think that Jen is better. Jen is the one that I picked from the beginning. I also picked David and Kim from the beginning also. I think that Jen is a better designer because she listens to what the client wants. I think that Jen has it over Matt. Matt should keep with construction.

I love both Jen and Matt and would be thrilled to see a duo show. I'd like to say that I definitely don't agree with the first comment by Sachi -Mikey V should not be Jen's carpenter if Jen wins. Matt is so much better on camera. Excellent season. I look forward to the next one!

I voted for Jen, being an artist myself, I like when someone knows how to add depth and character to a room using art. Jen had a challenge to accomodate 8-10 people. She gave the people what they were asking. I love the kitchen and the fireplace being tiled to the wall. However, with that big of a family I would went with a different color and style of sectional. But Vern said it himself that getting that sectional was a smart move. Go Figure GO JEN GO JEN GO JEN

Both contestants are super. They design well, host well, and are likeable people. In trying to choose, I decided to focus on which one I would prefer to "invite" into my home every week. That makes it a lot more simple. I choose Matt. His designs seem to consistently have a polished, finished look, and there is a special quality; a goodness of soul, it seems, that shines forth from him and leaves one feeling happier and more positive from just watching him work and interact with people. Thanks for a great show!

I liked both Matt and Jen's personality, but voted for Matt based on the fact he brings a fresh approach to design with his carpentry ideas. I look forward to seeing him create custom pieces on his new show. As far as Trish and Mikey V., please don't bring them back. They both have attitudes and didn't give poor Tracie a chance.

I truly loved watching this season! I could not wait until Sunday night! I am a little biased when it comes to Jen. She has actually painted a mural in my home (an Italian inspired countryside mural that was incredible---looked just like Capri, Italy)! She also faux-painted my dining room ceiling, which is a barrel vault. She is a true artist, an absolute doll, an incredible talent, and has a genuine heart. (And no, I am not related to her!) Seriously, she is the real deal. Matt seems to be such a nice guy, too, and he is quite talented when it comes to construction. They both have vision. I say HGTV could have a winner if they chose both of them and added Mikey V. and Trish occasionally. How cool was that when they got together again. Those four were so kind to each other. Good luck to the next Design Star! I can confirm that Jen is a star already in my book! Thanks for voting for her!

JB mentioned that HGTV DS desired to entertain and inspire the viewer.... Unfortunately, the entertainment became the drama that distracted from the inspiration from the talent of the contestants. Looking at their perspective websites, I don't believe that they would be good creative partners. They have two completely different visions in how they look through a lens and design. I don't believe that either of their work was fully reflected on the DS show. Their perspective websites gave a more complete picture of who they are as individual designers. Matt has my vote!

Posted by Robbin – July 29, 2008 8:56 PM

I do not think a show together is fair to anyone on the show. It is an all round designer. Why not give Trish and Mikie-V a show then. They were a great team this is not a team competition. The whole problem with the show this year was just that, not enough individual challenges. You could never tell if they were talented enough to do it on there own.

Posted by mshazen – July 29, 2008 8:49 PM

This season was the best! So much talent..Jennifer is awesome...I was talking with a co-worker about the show and the next thing I knew he was voting for Jen too...

Posted by MCOKAYE – July 29, 2008 8:43 PM

THE LAST TWO DESIGNERS ARE SO GOOD THAT IT IS HARD TO DECIDE WHO THE WINNER WILL BE. BUT I LOVE JEN'S DESIGNED AND I LOVE THE GENTLE WAY MATT COMES OFF ON TV. HE MUST BE VERY NICE TO WORK WITH, AS FAR AS A FUTURE DESIGNER. HE GOT STYLE ALSO.

Posted by MARIA – July 29, 2008 8:29 PM

In the room Matt did for his parents where were the chairs to sit on when they are using the game table? I think it would be uncomfortable and awkward to use the black leather chairs.

How can you vote when the site doesn't work! I have tried everyday since Sunday and have not gotten it to work. It certainly will not be a true vote if many cannot vote.

I loved Matt's design, but some choices he made just didn't seem right for THAT family... Can Denise reach all the way up into the microwave? That seems very important to me. Also, the hanging light was a bit much for the family; he could have given them a bigger TV or something instead. And too bad about his original cabinet finish not working out. Jennifer's design was great, except the seating blooper. I think she should have rearranged the furniture, even with the exposed connectors... The family probably will. Jennifer could have taped off the connectors and spray painted them... Why not? Would have only taken a few minutes and would have solved her problem. The family's needs seemed to be PRIMARY in Jennifer's design, and that's why she gets my vote.

Posted by KimMarie – July 29, 2008 6:54 PM

Please DON'T consider a duo show. Matt and Jennifer do not have chemistry. Matt has no charisma. Jennifer has tons.
DO consider offering MIKEY V the carpenter position if Jennifer wins. This sexy and talented guy would make a dynamic counterpart to Jennifer as design star.

Posted by Sachi – July 29, 2008 5:53 PM

It seems the rooms are more for the camera and speed than the families. I wonder how much of it is taken out when the cameras go away. The white sofa for a large family was just crazy, no seating for meals, chairs without arms, mud brown cabinets with black counter tops....etc. I think without the crazy time element maybe she could do better than Matt.

I loved this season of "Design Star"! I certainly wasn't disappointed at all. The last challenge was a great idea. Two such deserving families! Both designers really rose to the occasion. I can't believe that Jen had never done a kitchen before...what a great job! I was really impressed and decided, based on that kitchen, that my vote would go to Jen. Matt did a great job as well. I loved the dining room he did. It was spectacular! I really wish all the luck in the world to both Jen and Matt. Whom ever wins, I will be certain to watch what they do next!

Posted by Stephanie – July 29, 2008 5:18 PM

I've been voting for Matt, but I just watched the judges' walk-through again, and tomorrow, I'm going to vote for Jenn. I agree with so many who have suggested that they BOTH win and share a show--they each have different strengths and talents, and lots of integrity, and seem to be friends. I think that would be a great new show with a twist!

Posted by Barbara – July 29, 2008 5:07 PM

I have also not been able to vote, and it's really aggravating me. It looks like the Design Star will be chosen by those with text messaging on their cell phones, which is really unfair!
Jen and Matt are both exceptionally talented. I think they would make a great team. Matt's carpentry skills and Jen's artistic touches really complement each other. They just look like they should be co-hosting a show. Since only one can win, my vote goes to Jen because she can not only design, she accessorizes nicely, too. And she's great on camera! Her enthusiasm is contagious, and she makes you feel that if she can do it, so can you.

Posted by Kat – July 29, 2008 4:49 PM

One additional comment: I was glad to see that you finally made the online voting button visible today. It took me about 15 minutes to find the black button hidden on a black background and figure out how to vote Sunday evening, and when I tried to review the final designs online Sunday night, I kept getting "internal server error" messages. You need an "Interned Design Star" to fix your website glitches! Also, I have no clue why you are offering ONE vote per day online and FIVE by text message?!? What's the point? There doesn't seem to be any sign-in process to determine if people are really staying within the specified vote limits. And can more than one member of a household vote each day from the same computer or cell phone number? Can someone vote by text messaging and online? A very confusing and convoluted voting system which doesn't seem to make any sense whatsoever.....

I've read the common thread of how great it would be to have such an unusual spirit of teamwork in allowing both finalists to be part of next year's programming. There's so much emphasis on competition in our world and on tv....why not show America what teamwork can do....perhaps alternate as hosts of the shows, but enhance the overall outcome by a "two heads are better than one" example and let HGTV stand out in excellence reminding us what made America great....people working together as these two unique and gifted individuals have demonstrated...how refreshing!

Posted by Lynne McAtee – July 29, 2008 4:31 PM

I did LOVE Jen's magazine page kitchen, but I feel Matt did the best job of finding out what the clients really wanted and giving it to them. Of course Jen's family was delighted to have a new, beautiful space for free (who wouldn't?, but it looked to me like she rushed through a furniture store and just grabbed things without too much thought. White furniture is NOT EVER going to be easy to keep clean, even if it's leather. Also, Matt is very articulate and SINCERE. I know everyone seems to love Mikey V.(he should get credit for the awesome fireplace, and he is a great helper) but he was pretty mean to Tracee throughout the season (a professional should always rise above it). Matt is the one I feel should get the job, and he gets my vote.

Posted by pennycrowson – July 29, 2008 3:45 PM

All the designers have great talent, but it takes something special to translate that into easy TV viewing. Jennifer has that. She is natural on camera, and includes the small details that make the structure become a home. Matt is great on the big stuff, but his rooms look unfinished without some kind of accessories. Vern Yip is a master at that. Matt is so minimal, it appears undone.

Posted by Trisha – July 29, 2008 3:26 PM

I thought I entered my comment last night, but don't see that it showed up on the blog. Both designers did a decent job on the final design, considering the scope of the project and the ridiculous time constraints. Although minimalism is not my style, I think Matt's design was perhaps a little more finished and harmonious overall this time around. Jen's red cabinets and tile fireplace surround rated a "10", but I was surprised that she didn't add more color in areas other than the kitchen. Her other rooms were nice, but the colors were somewhat neutral and bland. J
