Kim is secretly glad this group of designers didn't have to escape the pain of the kitchen challenge and agrees with Matt that tile is the "death knell" of this task.
Be the first to comment! Enter your comment in the form below.
If you look at the first challenge, Michael and Trish did just dismiss Tracee's comments. On the challenge with Jennifer, Jennifer decided that Tracee was the cause of the problems when she wasn't there. On the kitchen show, Tracee tried to organize and create while ALL the others sat around rolling their eyes and refusing to get things together. Yes, Tracee was witchy, but she also got a bum rap. Did you see the evil looks Trish cast around? Did you not think that she was fake and too "happening" just as the judges were. Give me a break on the judges. Vern has grown more rude each year. Cynthia needs to buy clothes from a designer other than herself, and the 3rd judge (sorry forgot her name)needs to know that most of the world does not decorate from "In Style". Finally, can we not use any colors other than soft blue, gray, and brown? Every HGTV show uses those colors, and we don't all want our homes decorated in pale blue, brown and gray. Some of us actually like other colors.

This is the first time I have followed Design Star which I begin watching in the middle of the contest. What I wonder is why there were the three "Judges" who eliminated the contestants by judging their "talents" and now when there are two left they are letting the public vote for a winner. Rather than following through with their criteria and expertise they have turned this into a popularity contest. Very disappointing!

So happy to hear that others are disappointed with this season. I thought I was the only one who felt this way. The first season finale saw the final contestants design a glass cube. All they did this season was arrange brand new furniture and throw in some accessories. Boring! If HGTV cannot find talented people then don't have a fourth season. Also, I think Cynthia Rowley is hormonal, she kept crying all season. And please don't let her wear short skirts anymore. Love Vern.

I personally love David Bromstad as he has great camera presence and hosting abilities...
He is also a hunk...
We were so lucky to find him in the first season...
This year I prefer Matt because he too has a good camera presence...
I have a name for his show aready, called "Lockes Looks"...
Hope he uses that for his title...
Way to go David and Matt...

Hi Kim, I agree with your statements. I love your show!!!! They couldn't have picked a better person to win! I hope whoever wins this season can be as good as you so I can enjoy their show, too. I was wondering if you only work for hgtv or do work on your own? I would love to have you come to my house in Portage, In. and do some work on my house.. ;-).. ! Keep up the good work. Your show is fantastic!

This year is great. I loved every show. Matt really out done himself in two of the shows! I think he will make a great host with a great show.

I have enjoyed designstar, but season 3 was a disappointment at times. It seemed that season 3 relied too heavily on the show name- with some ego-laden designers wanting to be stars, and less cast members being creative people desiring to reach their dreams. Thank you very much for decorating the homes in New Orleans. P.S. I love watching the Kim Myles' show.

I have to disagree with some. I think this was a great season. Much better than last season. I love the last 4 on the show, Jennifer, Matt, Trish and Mickey V. They all got along so beautifully together and tried to help each other out. I think Jennifer and Matt should do a show together. They work so well together. Last season was a bust. No talent at all as far as I was concerned. I wouldn't waste my time watching Kim. She's too much into herself. But I love to watch David though from the first season.

I am a huge fan of Design Star and have been able to get an idea or inspiration, if not a "what not to do" from each show. However, I would like to see a lot more single challenges after the initial "weed out" process. A designer does have to manage people, time, clients and time. But I'd like the opportunity to see more of their own personality in designs, also their own innovation for specific space challenges. I don't think the contestants were always fairly judged when it came to client preferences. Although Trish wasn't my favorite to win, her parents room was exactly perfect for them and should have been recognized as such. I love Vern, have watched him for ages.. he is always kind yet constructive in his comments. Not too sure what the other judges bring to the competition in terms of room design credentials, would love to see them compete!

I have watched design stars since its inception. This was the worst. As stated by others, the designers had no appeal, whinned and complained and had not design talent. I can imagine of the two remaining candidates what show involving either would be successful. I am also in agreement that TRACEE should have never been on the show from the beginning. Thank you for both David and Kim. Two very down to earth, creative and talented individuals. They didn't claim to have their own business; just designers trying to get started in the business. The candidates from the second show had more talent than one and three.

I was so enthused about the past two Design Star seasons, but this season has been boring at best. The only one to show any spirit or class was Trish and now she's gone, so there is no reason to tune in. Neither of those left have the TV presence of the past two winners. I knew at the beginning that Kym Myles should be the absolute winner of second season, and was so happy when she won. No one left has that kind of spark. No one left brings much class to their rooms. Too bad, because I think they both have the know-how. Maybe it's the weird challenges this time, but there is something missing and way too much whining and bickering. Not fun to watch.
Posted by Char – July 24, 2008 3:31 PM
I have to disagree. I think this is the very best season. The difference appears to be the capability of the designers. They are each so good the disparity between contestants isn't as vast. Everyone is so good the judges are now looking for "great".
I agree with one of the prior posts; that Candice Olson is absolutely the best HGTV has to offer!
My two cents. :-)
Posted by Leslee – July 21, 2008 1:17 AM
My first time reading the blogs and I have to agree that this is the worst season. Not one of the designers has shown half the talent of David (love Colorsplash!) or Kim (just caught her show for the first time). I swore to my husband that I would not finish this season if someone doesn't wow me tonight with their design. Also too many group challenges. Not having a problem with the judges although fresh insight might be nice.

This year Design Star didn't start off like the previous 2 years. There is no one that stands out yet. I have grown to like Kim's design's and I think she is growing and going to be great. Glad you got new bags in the beginning of your show. David is good and creative but sometimes tooo much color. Still the ultimate one is Candice Olson. I like Vern's show also but think he has a candle fetish sometimes.

I was wondering about the cell phone issue, too. They show everyone wondering where the shopper is, but can't they call and ask? I was under the impression that Matt didn't want tile for the counters, not back splash, so didn't judge him on that. Obviously I could be wrong--the backsplash definitely needed something more. But what Tracee chose was not it. I agree with those who say that for the money and time, the kitchen was NICE.
Posted by Louise – July 20, 2008 5:47 PM
I agree with the majority of comments about this season's "designers". No one stands out for creativity & style. There was too much bickering & whining & crying. Tracee didn't take responsiblity for her own actions & should have been booted earlier.
None of the contestants are in the same league as David Bromstad who is talented, creative and absolutely deserved to win. I also watch Kim Myles. She is also creative & innovative & gets the homeowners involved in her designs. She is also a good host.
I hope that the 3 remaining designers start to shine, but overall I don't think that the best contestants were chosen at the very beginning.

I have to agree with most of the posts. This season is a big flop! No one stands out I also love Kim and Davids shows as well as all the others I'm addicted to HGTV!!! I really don't care who you pick other than thank you for finally voting Tracey off!!! I'm not too sure this whole program wasn't just staged to look like all the other reality programs none of which I watch!!!

I am very disappointed in this year's show. There are 3 or 4 designers from last year that are better than ANY from this year. And no one compares to David Bromstad's designer abilities and downright niceness on camera - remember the incredible room he created from pet store materials? Brilliant. Please either do a better job choosing candidates for next year or move on to a new show concept. How about talented "civilians" paired with pros to solve problem rooms? Or taking a look at the talented specialists that help the "stars" create the beautiful results - like Danielle Hirsch from Color Splash. She's an incredible paint specialist and explains how-to really well and that woman can do anything. Come on guys. This sub par stuff can't continue.

I am very dissapointed with this season's contestants. Tracee should have been gone on episode 1. I would not want someone like her to design a room in my house. i would spend all of the time waiting for her to get back from shopping and would still need supplies. I like Vern because he tells it like it is and is kind about it. The other 2 judges need to be replaced next season and I would like to see some talented non-licensed contestants. LIke myself, I am not afaid to take risks, or color and wouldn't copy a room that is done, and done, and done again in the same style. The couple with the kitchen got cheated they should have had a brilliant kitchen with $10k to spend. I felt bad for them. all they got was what looked like a $2000k facelift. All of them should be accountable, but Tracee, as the team leader should have stayed with the project and let someone else do the shopping. the rest of them should have listened to Tracee and make a plan before going shopping. and what did she do for 7 hours???????

I, too, am very upset that Mickey V. was voted off. Just like last season, the final 2 - they voted off the best one and now look at Myles of Style - should be named No Style for Myles and Miles and Miles.

OK The judging panel blew it last week by getting rid of Mikey V. Let's hope they didn't do it again (Since the show is already been shot). I hope Trish is in the Final Two. Then its up to us to make it happen. I want you to look at this as a possibility. Trish gets her own show and she brings Mikey V back as her carpenter. What an awesome show that would be. Maybe just maybe we the voters can show HGTV designers what we really want to see on the air.
I could pick apart the judges, but in general they are stuck up and have no clue what the average viewer really like.

i think if tracy would have came back with the tile and then go shoping which any normal human being should have figured out their would have at least been a punch there. why did they paint the back splash brown why not red? thats what i thought they would do because its the home owners favrote color. sory for the bad spelling im only 14
Posted by patrick – July 19, 2008 8:26 PM
If there isn't a great design this week, they should send all three packing and start the show over. No one has stood out. They should have sent Tracee packing in the beginning and maybe the bickering would have ended.
Posted by Jeanne – July 19, 2008 7:53 AM
I think that next year, if HGTV should pick contestants like they did this year (they didn't do a good job choosing at all) they should then let the same number of people come in off the street to compete against. The street people will win. A better idea is not to "choose" the contestants, but to "draw" the lucky winners out of the hat. You'll get a better selection without all the pretense and lies. And do change judges. 3 years of the same judges is so predictable (and boreing). Kim and David are both great. I really like David B, but Kim, I think you are "real" and I like your show. Keep up the good work.

I don't get the appeal of Jen's hosting... To me, she looked like a very sad dog begging for food or something... Her smile seems to be hiding a deep depressive state...

This year has been a big disappointment to me. I am feeling that the whole competition is staged-keep the "bad guy/girl" as long as possible even though they are not particularly good designers. I think that the judges need to be refreshed for next season if there is one. Vern is getting less likable every week. Season 1 was wonderful, season 2 was OK although I never could understand Todd being kept- everything he did was sport related. The talent in the first 2 seasons was definitely there, this year I have not seen it at all. I like the 3 that are left as far as personalities but have not seen much talent displayed. I hope the next show will bring it out and be worth watching. Otherwise, I will feel that this season is a bomb. I only watch HGTV and love it, but "Design Star" is not cutting it this year. Too bad!

I am a avid fan of HGTV and was looking forward to this years design star, however I am sorry to say that up to this point I believe that by keeping Tracie on the program when there were several opportunities to realistically say goodbye was a bad judgement error. It hurt the show I believe because at times the other designers were so busy trying to cover up for her long shopping sprees and other mistakes that they really were not given a true opportunity to show their unique abilities. While the three remaining contestants are great I personally think this years contest could have been handled much better. I totally believe that designers should be judged by their peers and we need to get the judge issue addressed before next year.

Kim wanted to let you know that I am happy that you won and are on the air. Also love Anthony he is also pretty good carpenter and not shabby to look at either. I agree with your comments this week, the kitchen was nice and I looked at the episode again and there was a lot that was missed, light fixtures, storage, backsplash. I do however do commend that it was completed. I was surprise that Matt wasn't willing to sign on to the tile but didn't offer any other alternative just a bit too focus to just finish that some other things suffered, including design. Continued success to you Kim.

I didn't see the first year but was really into last years contestants. If this years is the best of the best then I am a professional. They don't have any wow factor and act worse than a bunch of kids. Trace should have gone awhile back blaming all the mistakes on everybody else. The only thing is she tried to get a plan together and the "TEAM" was really rude, then blaming it on Tracee for not having a plan. Of course she should have had enough sense to get the tile and get back, should have learned that lesson once before. And when these people leave what is with the oh so sorry for me. Isn't this an adult world, I want my mom and I have family supporting me. Give me a break! Of course they are upset, I would be too if it were me. I loved last years contestants they had big ideas and did a great job in getting them out there. It was really hard to decide who was the better. Love Kim and David.

I cannot believe the incompatability of the whole design star wanna-bes this year. They all thought they were just "it," and should be listened to more than anyone else. I actually felt sorry for Tracy when noone would work with her on the design. However, since they didn't she should have just gone with what she wanted. Maybe this is what she wanted. She's been on a "blame game" since the beginning. I, too, thought she should go, but this time, I wish they'd send them all home. DH agrees with me, in fact, he thinks they should stop it before the end. I watch because I'm hoping that someone will step out as a designer like Kim did.

This is my first time to watch this show and it disgusted me. Vern was so rude that I will never watch his show. The would be constants spent more time critizing each other that they had no time to design. If I were going to be seen by all of America I would certainly not behave as they did! And who would enjoy the winners show after seeing such bad behavior all these weeks? Maybe I will just get my design ideas from magazines and skip this reality show. I am not comfortable watching shows where there is so much friction and rudeness.

I love David's show and I enjoy Kim's show. It is growing on me. The designers this year are really awful and I really don't care who wins. I am tired of the fighting, crying, and blame throwing. None of the designs have been exciting. I don't know where the heads of the judges are. These guys really aren't good. I looked forward to this season but don't care who wins. Can't imagine what kind of show they will have.

I agree with you, Pennycrowson, the kitchen is just what I would have wanted! Too many design shows these days feature dark grey walls, dark cabinets, black countertops etc. They look great when the camera lights are on, but how do they look in daylight? Also, it's not "green" (the new buzz word on HGTV) when you have to have the room bathed in 2000 watts in order to dispel the gloom!
Posted by CatarinaW – July 17, 2008 7:02 PM
This season is a big disappointment. So little talent, no risks, same old tired ideas. TRACEE was kept on because of the drama-value. I guess the producers looked back at that insane borderline personality disorder on Season 1 (the one that painted the nude mural) and decided to leave one nut in the bag for entertainment purposes. Big mistake. SCOTTIE put together a Motel-6 bedroom, and MIKEY V's "Thai" room looked like a sushi bar at the food court. MATT is trying too hard to be like that tall blond finalist last season (can't even remember his name), without the edge and arrogant attitude, but he comes off as fake. So boring. I hope Jennifer wins; she seems the most real. PRODUCERS: SCOUT SOME ACTUAL TALENT, PLEASE.

I love how Kim commented on how Matt said that tiling in a kitchen is "the deathnote" on Design Star. I love how she also said that when Tracee brought up Trish's finger, she knew she was going home. I'm sorry, but that was a little ignorant of Tracee. I love how Kim brought up Scott's back that happened back in Season 2, and I love how she said that nobody had a reason to bring that up at elimination. Tracee completely threw Trish under the bus.

I am very disappointed in this years contestants. I am hoping that the last 3 will make up for ALL the previous disasters of Season 3.
I agree that Mikey V did a lot of the painting and building and showed his potential in the individual portion of the show.
Tracee should have been released a lot earlier and then other contestants could have shown what they were capable of. I think she really dragged the other contestants down.

I totally agree that this year is a bust! There HAD to be a better group of finalist out there to choose from. This year, all of them seem to be afraid to take risks. This years choices are very blah!

I am just thankful that Tracee is gone. Yuk! I thought she should have been gone weeks ago. Now, I can enjoy watching the rest of the show. I loved the first two seasons. I love David's and Kim's shows. They are awesome.

Another comment from me. I think the judges should not concern much about "personality" of the contestants. They should concern only the talent in their design. I don't want to see a nice person but mediocre designer to be the design star!! I want the most talent in design!!
Posted by su – July 17, 2008 2:27 AM
The excitement and the talent are both missing this season. If you do another round of design star I hope you will change things up a bit. Don't have every challenge be on such a short timer. Filming can accomodate a 2 week or even a 30 day makeover to give design a chance to take precidence over availability. And please, let's find some talent next season along with some exciting challages (like the glass rooms on the first season or perhaps rooms in the new design home giveaway. Linda

Unfortunately the only person willing to take a risk and install tile was sabotaged and kicked off the show. If he managed to hang, tape and paint drywall he could have done the backsplash in the scheduled time. That would have given Mickey V an edge.

I do not like any of this years design star group. I couldnot connect with any of this group and this group was more nasty in attitude to each other than other previous groups and I wasnot impressed by much of their work. The exception being the group that won the contest in designing the hotel suite for Sara Evans. I think they all should go home and the judges need to start over. I am a loyall HGTV fan and of this program. But a big disappointment this year.

I agree, Tracey should have been the first to go. I guess they wanted it to be bit of a challenge to the others, having to tolerate her. And they didn't cope well at all. I would think that designers have to put up with a lot worse personalities than Tracey's though. You know, none of them were willing to put their foot down when it came to her. It seemed like they were all about making sure someone else was eliminated, not that their own designs shined through. They made sure she "hung" herself. Yet everyone suffered from it. And it also seems that some were intent on being "like so-and-so did last season" etc. Not original at all. I also think they are only fooling themselves if they (or anyone) thinks they can top David's performances! (Kim, you are good, but David is the BEST!)

I am very sad to see Mikey V go. He worked hard and was willing to help everyone. Matt didn't want to try the backsplash but Mikey V was willing to do it. I am very disappointed in this show this time. HGTV is the major channel that I watch but this was very upsetting to me. He was the best. his hosting skills will get better. he is genuine and kind. Vern does not have any hosting skills. he is stiff as a board.

Being a Kentucky native, I was thrilled to see Tracee as a participant and hoped she would win...at first. However, she came across as conceited, arrogant and unlikable from the very first episode. Although I was disappointed with her attitude and design ability initially, I sincerely believe she got a raw deal on her final elimination episode...both from her team members and the judges.
If the team's interaction and dialogue was truly representative of the entire kitchen project... and not heavily edited for its "controversial appeal"...none of the team members, including Mikey V, made any attempt to cooperate with Tracee. She didn't have a chance of succeeding as team leader because the team had no intention of letting her succeed. And, let's get real judges!! Just how much style and design can you expect to shine through in a kithen renovation with such an unrealistic timeframe??
Like so many other posters have stated, I'm totally disappointed with this season of HGTV's DesignStar. Heads up HGTV...if we wanted to watch controversial, meanspirited, confrontations we would tune into one of the TV court and/or "trash" reality shows.

This season does not have any people who really stand out and make you say, "Wow, that's a great designer."
I think what they should do is just give Trish and Mikey V a show together. It seemed like they were good friends and would make a good team. They both have good qualities that would make for a great show that I would definitely watch.
Posted by krista j – July 16, 2008 11:53 AM
I'm still loving the show even though Tracee should have been dropped earlier on. The problem is, I'm not emotionally caught up in who wins. I have my two preferred designers, but I'm not voting multiple times a day as I did with Bromstead and Myles!! Next season better have more "hook", more pizzaz....maybe different competitions? Maybe a second "solo act" so we can see which designer actually has talent. After all, the winner of Design Star will _not_ be hosting/working with an argumentative team!
Posted by MishaBarista – July 16, 2008 11:36 AM
I agree the Tracy needed to go. She showed no originality on any of her designs and constantly blamed everyone else for her failures. Mikey V was a nice guy but had no hosting skills. I think if his hosting skills were better, they would have kept him. I don't think the designers are as talented this year. I haven't seen anyone shine yet.
Kim - I am so glad you won last year. You were my favorite!

I am disappointed as well, the bar hasn't been raised and I don't think that this years group of designers even come close to the design quality or creative talent of David Bromstad and Kim Myles. Working hard is one thing, but I haven't really seen one person that actually has any creative design style. I think this season is a wash and whoever you pick will just be the best of the worst.

Am I the only person who thought the kitchen was great for the amount of time & money allowed? Most middle class people don't want something permanent and expensive like flooring, counter tops, or tile to be too colorful or faddish because we can't afford to spend $10,000 or more every time the styles change. We get our color from accessories. I would be delighted to have that kitchen.
Posted by pennycrowson – July 15, 2008 8:06 PM
This is the worst design star season ever. Tracee should have been the very first one to go. There is NO star on this show and I personally would not watch any of them. What is wrong with the judges? There has ben no excitement in any of the designs. David and Kim are great design stars, and not one person this season can match them. Better luck picking contestants next year, because this year is lost!
Posted by del – July 15, 2008 7:57 PM
This season has been very disappointing. The judges are lackluster and predicatable and need to be replaced. There is no one on the design team that I would even vote for. Micky V sounded like what he is a street cop. Tracee should have gone the first week. No one has shown any design skills or hosting ability, not like David and Kim. They certainly can't get along, more like kids than adults. You blew it this time, HGTV, seasons one and two were great and choosing between the 2 finalists at the end was a real decision. This year...boring, poor quality, and no one stands out. If it deteriorates this badly in the next two episodes, I won't even bother next year.

I was really surprised to see that Matt was kept. Here he had an opportunity to do the tile and he chickend out. He put himself first in front of this family's chance to get this remodeled kitchen with a tile backsplash. It's sort of like giving someone a new bedroom set comlete with bedframe, headboard but no mattress. Why didn't he step up to the plate? Instead he dropped the ball as far as I'm concerned, he was scared to do the right thing. He was doing this project for a family and he really dissapointed me. Even the team leader told him to do it and he said no, that's like telling your boss at work when you're told to do something I'm not doing it, what a poor sport, he really showed his true colors and I'm really surprised the judges didn't comment on that.

I think that Mikey needs to stay and work with HGTV.....he knows his stuff and once he gets over his "stage fright" he will be a wonderful asset...dude...Mikey...no need to go patroling...you have a career on HGTV and that's it....hope to see you in future eposides....bye bye Tracie...you know that whatever you say on camera will be showed to the whole world...you had no professionalism at all and shifted the blame to everyone else but yourself...how are you running a business in the first place?..stay behind your desk and stay off television...

First I wanted to tell you that I just love your show, Kim. Your vivacious personality and out-of-the-box designs are fun to watch. This is actually my first season watchind Design Star because I like your show and David's so much that I wanted to see the competition this year. I have to say that it seems like more of an exercise in group dynamics this year than a true design show; while I believe in giving everyone a chance, I am so glad to see Tracee gone...she was poison. I don't think the designers have any time to create a plan which just isn't realistic. I think at the very least they should find out what there challenge will be the evening before so they can start planning.

Kim, your comments are right on. What gets me is how into themselves this group of contestants are. None of them ever says "Thanks for the opportunity, it was great!" Mikey talking about "smuck patrol" is an insult to PD officers. Tracee acting like losing on Design Star is going to be a problem in her life. Take your lemonade and have a lemonade party. Look at Sparkle Josh! All of them have been given a major career boost, regardless of whether they win the show.

Oh yah, the judges should have said BYE BYE to Tracee a long time ago. No talent, no self accountability. As to the remaining three designers, someone needs to get the creative juices flowing! Show us you have imagination! We want to see some WOW!!

The real looser on this is the home owner. I hope that HGTV redid the kitchen to code. It is easy to cover up things but another to keep it to code. Give them more time to do the job right. It still makes good tv and the home owner wins too. We don't need to see them raceing around and injuries to make good tv. They should care enough to take her to a doctor for xrays. Let Homes check this kitchen out and see what he thinks.

As I posted elsewhere, this group is disappointing all the way around. It's possible to show some initiative and personality in a group. This group only shows collectively that they dislike someone else.
I think I'd have thrown them all out. Tracee was certainly obnoxious, but they had a couples' dream kitchen in their hands. They should all have been more concerned with giving them the best than paying back Tracee's bad attitude. One whined about tile being a death knell. Better to give them a dead kitchen?
This group is really sad. First and second years had their troubles, but it certainly wasn't predictable designs, lazy efforts, zero personality.
Better Luck Next Year.

Why did Trish wait until the team was on the clock to ask for medical help. Why was she not criticized for that? A team player would have gone off to the ER alone. And how much did it cost to have a full response team out for a non-emergency. Sometime I don't understand where the judges are coming from. That whole team was out to get Tracee by doing their own thing instead of working together. I wanted Tracee gone, but she at least TRIED at the beginning to pull something together.
Mikey V, so sorry to see you go. Priorities are off -- teach camera work after getting someone who knows design.
Posted by Peg – July 15, 2008 2:58 AM
I was thrilled to see Tracee leave because she had such a arrogant attitude. The judges should have considered past efforts of each contestant and left Mickey V for the final round. I like Matt but I haven't seen anything so far that has a unique or distinctive design flair. I love Vern and watch everyone of his shows. I love his design style but the other judges should be changed. I'd love to see candance of one of the prior winners as a judge next season.

If the producers are smart, they have already contracted MikeyV for the next Design Star show as the 'carpenter guy". He would be a terrific foil for any of the three left ala Danielle for David and the cute guy carpenter on Kim's show. This season is sad. What were they thinking when they picked this crew? At least Michael had enthusiasm for design. I feel like I'm watching Survivor with all of them 'playing the game.' Try to kick it up a notch, guys. You don't want to be remembered as the season that killed Design Star.
So far you've been as 'blah' as this episode's kitchen.
Posted by Johnye P – July 15, 2008 12:25 AM
The first two Design Star seasons were so good, that I had no reason to think this season would be different. But wow...blah blah blah...boring! And Matt, Trish and Jennifer. I'll probably be ok with a Trish or Matt win, but I can't stand Jennifer!! She is arrogant and mean! The eye rolling and smirking she does makes me CRAZY. And she is SO fake! She doesn't give a fig about the other contestants, and her "congratulations" towards them when they don't get eliminated or are compliments are obviously only for the camera. I love how they show her cocky little smirks when someone gets criticized or eliminated. If you watch closely, her true personality comes out. She'll stab any one of them in the back if she thought she could get away with it. Ugh! If she wins, not only will I not watch whatever show they concoct for her, I may stop watching HGTV all together. And that's saying something, considering how much I watch it now. I love Kim's and David's shows, but I fear we won't get anything like their caliber this season.

Very dissapointed in the show this year. Think it's time to get some new judges that have a fresh prespective. If Cynthia is a designer someone needs to tell her to comb her hair from time to time and wear something that looks like it fits. Vern's personality seems to be changing with every season. He used to offer some very good, constructive suggestions. Now he borders on rude. The show is definitely going down hill.

This seasons show has been the most disappointing. I feel the bar was lowered - not raised this year. The only creative project this season was the blue and brown bedroom that Mikey V and Matt did. I love you HGTV, but you've dropped the ball!
Posted by Kay – July 14, 2008 10:08 PM
Why didn't they buy the tile at the same time they bought the drywall? Most places that carry one carries the other and they would have had it at the end of day one. The person who made that call is the one who cost Mickey V his spot.
Also, how did they possibly spend $10,000 (not including the appliances)? Didn't they have $2 left over for a roll of painter's tape? (I'm talking about the kitchen window)
Why didn't they change the light fixture?

Don't let Mikey go back to his patrol car! Every show on HGTV has a skilled craftsman/carpenter, make sure Mikey gets one of those jobs and perhaps he can work his way up into design. I feel like this competition has almost prevented the individuals from shining. My favorite designs so far was Jennifer's Italian room and the beds that Matt created in the first challenge. I hope that they can spread their wings in the next challenge.

Kim, I adore you. just thought I'd let you know. From the beginning of last season, I knew you were one of the better ones and in the end, I was voting for you and I am more happy you won EVERY time I see you. You're AWESOME! I have to disagree with you on Tracey's desire to get everyone on the same page. I think she may have had the same thing on her mind...payback. My education is heavy into group dynamics, etc., so I know what to watch for and she did not have a clue on how to pull a group together and dropped the ball the minute she felt any resistance from the others. In fact, I think she was already "chalking one up for their ignorance" in her head when they didn't immediately jump on her bandwagon. I'm glad she's gone. On to a hopefully better next week!!

HGTV: I believe the term Matt was using was "death knell," NOT "death nail." It's a bad omen or portent. You can look it up here. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/death%20knell Par for the course for this season, actually. Has anyone commented on the fact that no one called Tracee--what, no cell phones this season?--to ask her to return the tile to the site? Once a loyal fan, I am having a hard time believing the authenticity of Season 3.
Posted by Ellen Morrison – July 14, 2008 7:09 PM
Tracy made an honorable effort to get everyone on the same page in the very beginning, to develop a plan and a design. It was by "design" that they didn't care to listen. They treated her very unfair and did not give her a chance. She does need to work on her time management, who doesn’t. She knew time was of the essence and did not seem to care. However, with the group knowing how she is about time, as a team someone should have gone with her, or strongly suggested that someone else go! They completely didn’t care that the assignment was to do a QUALITY kitchen! No one did! Instead their selfish behavior made them look worst than any show that did not finish the kitchen design. At least in the past they were trying to be creative, not safe and conniving. That was just wrong! Really unlike last season where anyone could have won, (Kim is GREAT) there has not been any design to just pop! The designers last year where FANTASTIC! It is scary to think that one of these three will have a whole series on “design.” I do hope that at least the three will have a chance to show all the viewers they can do some creative designing and redeem themselves.
Posted by Jennifer – July 14, 2008 5:34 PM
Hosting! Trish...can we say bad acting! Its so forced. All she does is pop those hips and fling that head. I like Jennifer, great smile. Matt is smooth and confident. I hope it comes down to Jennifer and Matt.
Posted by Karen – July 14, 2008 5:01 PM
My two big questions are: Why did Tracee take 7 hours shopping? Why did the producers give so little time to do such a big project? This is not serious.
Posted by Tully – July 14, 2008 3:54 PM
Design Star Judges got it wrong this year. Mickey V wasn't given the opportunity to shine due to Matt and the teams insecurity about the tile. Do these judges see the same thing we see? Too many games being played in the group this year which is preventing us from seeing real talent. I wouldn't hire any of them as designers. David B and Kim M best thing Design Star has produced. This new group has no talent they just presents things they see in magazines with no flare or style.
Posted by Jessica – July 14, 2008 3:16 PM
Adios, Tracee. That was the most unprofessional behavior! Yeah, I am sure they kept her on for the drama, but to allow her lack of integrity and work ethic to continue into the finals would have been over the top. The proof of her deficiency in class or style was in her exit interview. Can you believe her? What was all that talk about her employees? And she didn't even stop to thank the judges for keeping her in the competition for so long. Last season the challenges were more interesting and contestants were better qualified. Let's hope HGTV can pull this season out of the unfinished basement and breathe some life back into the show.

Tracy was her own worse enemy. As she was saying what had to be done, if you watch the others faces they had sabotage written all over their faces. No one seemed to have a 'wow' factor to offer. Who ever is finally selected will have a short run series, as they are all poor designers.

This has been a very disappointing season. No one seems to be a stand out, just sort of bland all around. The people left don't inspire me either. Tracy was her own worse enemy. This kitchen looks like my design plan was used. I could paint a safe color and put down a new floor, but wouldn't be able to pull off anything else. That's why I watch HGTV. Where is the Design Star Style? Does anyone have it?
Mickey V was the class on that show. He has good heart and was always willing to help others, and this IS a competition. He has great design ideas and did a great job on everyting he touched. I'm sorry to see him leave. He did seem nervous this week but why didn't the judges look at the whole picture of who contributed to the work done and ideas they put forward. Mickey V was the only one wanting to do the backsplash. I think he would have pulled it off if he had be given the tiles on time. At least he wanted to do the tiles, Matt refused. Thank goodness that Tracy is finally gone. Did the judges keep her to get us to watch. I didn't tune in to watch Springer!!! I really do not see a design star this year. HGTV what about a program with a team of Trish and Mickey V they work great together, and have good design ideas.

While I liked Mikey, I was never impressed with his behind the scenes interactions. He always seemed to have the eye roll, the smirk, and was the one who would encourage Michael in his catty little digs at Tracee. Tracee needed to go as well. I do not understand the judges' dismissal of Matt's hosting abilities. Jennifer seemed far more blah to me. I would watch a show with Matt in it. I would not watch one with the other two finalists. Their POV seems generic.

Mickey V: you made the show rock!
You have talent, and the hosting skills was not something David had out of the box on year 1...and he is such a star (we all love Color Splash don't we!!!! Yeah!)
Cut him some slack, Mickey V was afraid of the camera, and that skill will come...talent does not. As nice as Matt was, Mickey V had more innovative ideas, and real "Fierce" skills with a saw. He had vision, and no one wanted him to run with it...too bad he didn't just go out looking for backsplash stuff...he would have rocked it. Who did the great bed design, who designed the cool bench from a bookcase? who constructed the headboards...where is TODD from last year! We'll miss you Mickey V... , the others seem nice, (ding, dong the witch is gone)but really cookie cutter. Are you REALLY looking for a Design STAR this year HGTV? mmmmm Oh, and get some really talented people to judge please: Candice Olsen, Amy Wynn, etc...let them actually LOOK at the room itself, in person, not just on camera.
Posted by Mary – July 14, 2008 11:17 AM
Tracee should have been the first to go. The Judges have nothing to complain about; they shot themselves in the foot. If they had sent her home immediately as they should have, they would have had a competent team leader for the kitchen project. I did not like to see them send Mikey V. home.

Hey Kim,
Couldn't agree with you more regarding your comments. I felt as though the kitchen was nice, but again, we're looking to see a design STAR in the making and I don't think that's happened yet. Although, I must say, it was incredibly impressive that they pulled off such a great kitchen in such a short time period - kudos to the team for getting it done and for adding the touches of red that the homeowners requested.
By the way, I LOVED the countertops and would really like to know what they used! Can HGTV post the info.? The counters looked amazing with the stainless steel appliances. Beautiful and on a budget! Truly great to see.
Love your commentary, Kim (and your show!). Keep up the fantastic work!

Very predictable and weak, no contestant should have their own show out of this group. Come on, judges, we already know who you have picked to win. How about some better judges and maybe then the show might be stronger and make it back next year.

Tracee was long overdue for a return trip home. She brought out the worst in the people around her because that’s how she treated them in the beginning. She talked and shopped without a clue, while the rest had to do all the work without her. She spent two hours the final day hanging her placemat valance and setting up accessories on the counter. The final four would have performed better on this challenge had Tracee not been involved. I agree that Mikey V was the weakest in the hosting challenge. He seemed more nervous and uncomfortable this week than he did in Opryland. I’m pulling for Matt, but I think the judges are leaning towards Jennifer or Trish. If a woman is chosen, I hope it’s Jennifer. I don’t like Trish and would not watch her on a show. I hope Matt throws the WOW factor into next week’s challenge!!

Have loved every season of Design Star. My husband & I watch it every week. However, I'm surprised that Tracee lasted this long. She wanted to be a team captain, but when she got the chance, she blew it, although her "team" didn't really support her. Her parting comments, I think, really showed her true character, especially her statement about being associated with "those losers". Maybe with the three who are left, we can finally see some fair, individual competition.

The judges are idiots,it just shows me they didn't even watch what happened.I happen to think Vern's
hosting style or lack of it sucks. As soon as I see its his show i change channel.
Mickey is was the best designer,he can be taught just like everyone was.I remember when David B won,
he was awful as a host.It just takes a few shows under your belt.
I wont watch Design star ever again ,and i loved the show, HGTV is all i watch.

I totally agree that Mikey V. was great, but someone had to be voted off along with Tracee. At least he exited with grace and dignity (unlike his fellow contestants -- Michael and Tracee).
And although the tile was considered the death nail of this task, I agree with the judges that it should have been done. The contestants knew what had to be done, and they slacked big time on the project. I wouldn't go so far as to say the space was boring (as one judge put it), but it certainly didn't have any WOW factor. Tracee is to blame on the tile. She knew there was no way it could get done after spending 7(!) hours shopping for "accessories" and she's the one who made the schedule for when things needed to be done!
Posted by brenda – July 14, 2008 8:07 AM
Well, you are going to be on camera as a host and you have to make people comfortable. Mickey V. just couldn't do that. No matter how great your design skills, a TV show needs a good on-camera personality as well.
If Tracee had a schedule that said the tile was to be finished by a certain time, she shouldn't have needed anyone to tell her to bring it back asap. A major mistake in addition to no design plan.
Posted by Patricia – July 14, 2008 1:38 AM
I totally agree with the judges about this kitchen. It was boring and lacks the "wow" factor even though the team managed to execute their design plan or lack thereof successfully. Tracee deserved to go home two shows ago. Mikey V unfortunately did not have the hosting part down, such a disappointment because I feel he has real potential. Good luck to you and the remaining three.
Posted by Sharon – July 14, 2008 1:17 AM
You are right on Andrea ~ Matt should have gone over Mikey V. Mikey wanted the challenge of the back splash. He wanted to own it and show that a team could over come the problematic back splash. He was never given the chance. Matt was a scaredy cat and was afraid to tackle the "death nail." He should have gone home.
Posted by Wanda – July 14, 2008 12:49 AM
I was very dissappointed to see Mickey V go. He was there the entire time working hard and I have always seen him as a team player and I liked his work. Matt's "Buddhist temple" from previous competition left me with a bad impression of him. Sad that decision on tonight's show was based on hosting. I think Mickey V would have been a fresh innovative addition to the Design Star team. I have a feeling Trish may be the winner... Let's see what happens!

God, I am glad they finally got rid of Tracee. She needed to go the very first week, I don't know why they held on to her this long. She is untalented, very conceited, and not at all a design star! Good thing her friends and family at home like her.
Posted by renee' – July 13, 2008 11:44 PM
I think all the remaining designers had a vendetta against Tracee. I thought they were supposed to be designers? They were contractors on this one. Turning out to be a disappointing season
Posted by CJ in DC – July 13, 2008 11:15 PM
I totally agree with andrea. Mikey V was the class of this season. I felt like Vern had it in for him from the start. Mikey's work ethic and common-sense design skills were excellent. And despite Vern's constant comments about being afraid of Mikey, his hosting skills were friendly and informative. I am done with Design Star.

Kim, I guess you have to be diplomatic. You are talented, vivacious and like David Bromstad, a complete standout. This seasons pickings were the dregs. I guess nobody with any real talent or ingenuity wanted to be a design star. Tracee should have been the first one to go, she was awful in every aspect, especially her inability to take responsibility for her own actions. It will take an awful lot to get me watch season 4...if there is one.

I LOVE LOVE this show, but this year I feel that no one has made that, I wish I could do what he/she can do, feeling or the out of the box use of things. I still love the show. I don't miss any of the past winner's shows and I am a die hard HGTV viwer. Just missed it with this group I thinks. Sorry, still love ya
