Sparkles welcomes his Sparklers and Sparklettes to chat about the hometown challenge and definitely thinks Matt had the toughest challenge.

I agree with everyone who says Sparkle Josh needs his own show. I absolutely fell in love with him when he was on Design Star and was thrilled when I saw that he was going to have a vlog on the website. In fact, I watch the show just so I can then watch his comments and know what he is referring to. Being from the deep south myself, I can appreciate his accent and love all of his references. He is a true "gem" and has an amazing natural talent that should not be overlooked. If he had a show, I'd watch it before anything else on television-well, that and Survivor. But, I digress. The one thing I don't agree with on the comments is Jen's red kitchen cabinets. I LOVED them! I think that was actually the highlight of the entire season. Would I put them in my own house? No, because it would look ridiculous with the rest of the house. But, if I were buying a house and it had red cabinets in a kitchen like that, I would totally fall for it. I do agree that Mikey V shouldn't have been kicked off-he was way better than most on the show!

what is wrong with the judges? Trish should have been in the final two. Jennifer's style is the same all the time. Wall design. She either does art or stripes or some thing to the walls. Trish had real talent. Just because she did a room that was what her parents wanted and not what the judges want should have stood for something. The client is whom you are suppose to impress and the judges did not take that into consideration. Really disappointed in the judges think they made a big mistake

I have viewed Design Star for 3 seasons. Have yet to observe anyone who is as talented as Sparkle Josh. It was obvious that Vern was intimidated and jealous of Sparkle. Josh has more designing expertise that Vern will ever have. It's time for a "Sparkle Josh" show on HGTV.

Hello,
I can't vote,For Design Star! I think it should be a tie! They should do a show togather! Matt and Jennifer , Compliment each other! They should have some of the others, ( like the last two runners up) And Other Guests, On a show they do togather-Would be Really interesting!!!

I thought all the designers had strengths. Mikey V should not have been eliminated over the tile counter top because the team captain who made out the time line did not follow it and deliver the tile in time.
I do not think anyone should be eliminated on the first show. Have 2 people be on the bottom with a chance to redeem themselves the next week or be eliminated.

I personally would like to see SPARKLE JOSH return to a show as a host or co-host. He in my opinion has a charisma that no one else can top! I looked forward to seeing the shows each week just because he has a great gift for the camera shots and his dialogue is awesome!!! Sometimes we all need a little humor and need to laugh a little instead of the back stabbing show that I saw this season. I love the 3 judges and Clive but really how entertaining are the contestants that are crying all the time, being rude and crude to the others, or just plain being hurtfull to their opponents. The shows need to go back to being entertaining and not so much a fighting battle between people who are just trying to follow their dreams.

Posted by Peggy Mays – July 29, 2008 9:06 PM

DO NOT WANT TO SEE A SHOW WITH BOTH MATT AND JENNIFER!!! Feel Matt was more "world-ly" and capable of more than just painting shapes on a wall. She cried too much and at times came across, to me, as "fake". I like Matt's tone, energy and "realness". I like the judges although I did note a change in them this year compared to years earlier. I like Color Splash with David and Myles of Style with Kim. I think her show started a little slow but she's good! I do think HGTV needs to consider re-incorporating shows from the past (Matt and Sheri Hill and Carol Duvall) along with more AFFORDABLE design options/how-to's for SMALL spaces and wallets. I'm done with the flipping shows as a majority of people are having a hard enough time keeping themselves from being the former owners of these homes to every other hour having a show about someone with a couple extra thousand dollars making more. START AT HOME - With real people!

Posted by Lindsey – July 29, 2008 7:54 PM

It doesn't really matter who wins this year. We don't really need anymore shows about people who just design. There are designers all over the country who do beautiful work. HGTV needs to listen to their viewers and bring back Sparkle Josh from last season. His show would be entertaining as well as useful. The final two this year are good designers...so is Kim Myles, but, sorry, her show isn't ineresting either. Where's the personalty, the "sparkle"?

Posted by Marsha – July 29, 2008 1:45 PM

I have been disappointed in some of the DS's challenges and the judges' decisions more this season than in others. There were a couple of problem causers that were finally eliminated that I would have removed previously, but it is hard to justify removing a person from a winning team, even though they were an issue. I think the judges were mostly fair in working within their restrictions.

That being said, I agree with the final two, although my personal choices would have pretty much gone stagnant between Matt, Jen, Trish, and Mickey V. Had the judges not made the decision for me, I can't say that I would have been completely able to choose between the 4, and since my internet apparently doesn't like me, and because of my stepson downloading so much crap, I am unable to cast my vote for my choice.

Either or both of you would be great! I think both would be a great team, and that would be my optimal.

I ROOTED FOR MATT AND JENNIFER FROM THE FIRST EPISODE NOW I DON'T KNOW WHO TO VOTE FOR I THINK THEY ARE BOTH WONDERFUL. GREAT SHOW MY FAVORITE.

Posted by BECKY EDWARDS – July 28, 2008 6:18 PM

Haved watched the show from the beginning. Have not been torned for a winner until this season.
Could NEVER live with those red cabinets from Jen, but love her designs of the past.
Love Matt's work all season.
They are both great. Why not have them both and change the format of the show. Think alittle change would be good!!!!

Posted by JoAnn – July 28, 2008 3:55 PM

Why so much complaining? The two obvious best contestants have survived the competition. The problems that plagued them initially still bother their designs now. Matt thinks too big and Jennifer has a knack for the superficial. I was confused until now. Having lived in New Orleans as well as having family from there I avoided facing the tragedy of Katrina. I can see that the clear winner is Jennifer. She has the soul, a natural and pleasing range of emotions on camera, she related to the family in exactitude ( That little girl's grin in the corner of the sectional; we all got that). I'm in awe of that and I have a degee in Interior Design. Matt's kiln solution missed the mark for me I ashamed to admit I might have done something similar. It didn't photograph well and where does the heat go when it is in use. near the electronics? I certainly wanted to give Trish the benefit of the doubt, Her gondola bed was reason enough to go. She doesn't have the external facial beauty to sell me anything but Stephanie's ulta vibe is outdated when the eyeliner is actually an early 60's look. Actually, I was pulling for Matt. If you could give him some Visine and a good photographer his personality if featured with more sensitivity and better lighting would a serious professional/commercial type of design. Thanks.HGTV and the DVR. Diane

(1)I agree with the suggestion to have all the designers continue throughout the entire competition. You could narrow down to fewer contestants before the show begins.

(2)Some of the judges made remarks that were unsuitable. Vern's "one trick pony" comment was poorly phrased. Maybe the judges were having a bad day?

(3) Totally unacceptable to be using carpenters without sufficient experience--shame on HGTV.
All competitors should have good suppport.

(4) Agree that Trish was more a decorator than a designer.

(5) Don't need to air the bickering. Did not need all the drama, either, about Trish's injured finger--not relevant. Stick to the job.

(6) Although I like Matt, it's hard to see why he was not eliminated for that awful remake of the supposed-to-be craft/family room. Anyone who sews or does crafts could see how awkward and user-unfriendly it was. And a tall (but very nice)game table with four huge low black chairs?
I wondered why the kiln was set on the floor--but that was a pre-existing situation and not Matt's fault. No problem about circulation and safety since the wall moved away for the occasional use of the kiln. And why not use sliding screens/panels on that back wall of shelves. Curtains are not as easily manipulated or convenient. Can you tell I'm a quilter/crafter?

(7) Jen is also okay. Extremely emotional and seems overwhelmed pretty often. Very fond of paint--ruined that table she painted white. Liked the sister's room remake. Seems to have a poor sense of scale with couches, twice so far. Too much white for a large busy family in the final show. And that huge couch is inflexible and a bit claustrophobic. Needed more flexible options for dining also, since space was limited. And agree with other comments about using the area where she placed the glass table diffently.

(8) Like suggestions about using some different judges each week, with perhaps 1 anchor.

(9) I also liked Will (tall blond guy) from last year's competition. Had a lot to offer, personable, daring, unique. And Sparkle Josh looks great--nice to see him being used as a commentator. HGTV, I think there is a place for him on your network.

(10) Being one of the millions who live in a small home/condo/apartment, I would really like to see more on innovative usage of space to get the most from what you have, at a reasonable cost.

(11) Favorite shows: Divine Design, Color Splash,
Design Remix, and Rate My Space makeovers.

i hope jen dosnt paint any more flowers on a wall in the finales cuz she dosnt have any creativity other than her painting flowers and matt dont really have any special technics to show off so maybe we should vote none of the above

Posted by lisa – July 27, 2008 10:47 PM

I am in agreement with the judges about Trish's cancellation - it's obvious that she has had polishing all her life from a, shall we say, upper class upbringing. And polished, she was, always looking great despite the situation.
Serena, daahling, you missed the point: the wall rolls out so the kiln can be re-located elsewhere during firing. That's what made it such a brilliant design.
My wish for Matt, because he is clever and original, but most of all, because he has a good soul, is that he be the winner. I love Jenn, too, but let's face it, (she has a husband and a business which hubby is running all by himself now) would a win on this show just be another notch on her belt of achievements, or would she truely be happy with it?
In closing, "Love ya, Sparkle J, keep on a' Sparklin' daaarlin'!"

Design Star has been a total disappointment this year, but them again when HGTV has totally ignored all of Sparkle Josh's fans, what can you expect.
Anything that he would host would be a total hit from day one.
I had hopes that Kim's show would be good, but it is totally boring ... HGTV get a clue ... give Sparkle Josh his own show ... or do you not care what your viewers want????

Posted by Sharon – July 27, 2008 9:23 PM

This season focuses too much on group designs. I still don't really have a sense of style for the two remaining designers. The season 1 format was by far superior and David (Season 1 winner) has by far been the most talented find to come out of this show. Sparkle, your show would be a blast and hope to see it on HGTV soon!

Posted by Lisa – July 27, 2008 8:27 PM

I too have to agree, Sparkle Josh so needs his own show. I love his personality and his comments too. Go Josh Go!!

I was disappointed tho see Trish's show cancelled. I liked her designs. Her final room was beautifil and fit the needs of the people she was designing for. I would like to see more "textbook design"(classy, traditional design) on HGTV as well as the cutesy things. Just because something is built does not make it better than a purchased item. There are alot of people who purchase their decorating needs rather than make them and it would be nice to have shows that features it.

It's so great to see you online. You were one of the nicest people, if not the nicest person on last year's Design Star. And I really hope you're doing well. I didn't always agree with the judges criticisms of your designs. I thought a few times you did better than they gave you credit for and I was so sorry to see you go. I thought the personalities and imagination of last year's contestants and the challenges were so much better than this year. This year's show, I'm sorry to say, has been a little boring for me, though I'm not sure why. I was kind of disappointed in the little blond guy and Tracee's attitudes.

Hello Sparkle!!!!! You make me laugh and really do add SPARKLE to the Design Star experience. My parents had a kiln at our house when I was growing up. Ceramics anyone??? Okay, I agree that the fireplace makeover rocked! I like the leaves on the wall but, wonder if it would grow old quickly. The craft room was just not fair!!! What was he supposed to do? I would love to see you offer them some of your design tips!!!!
Who will it be???? We shall see!!!!

I realized in a flash what sums up the 99% tacky designs that plague hgtv's shows. Most of the designs are like that baby blue prom tux with the ruffle shirt, all brid's maids dresses, and 60's/70's burnt orange vinal shag palaces. It's a bad idea to begin with,a disaster in the end.I can smell a little old lady's house or the stench of cheap inscense.I'll take an Armani tux and be in style for years-let the tasteless wear thier baby blue tux and ugly briad's maid dresses-photos last a long long time.Matt has the class and taste that is missing on all but a few of the shows.hate to tell you but trish and jennifer have a future designing double wides. charles/armani

I was really disappointed in this years show. Not much real talent that I could see.
I agree with the others, maybe we need new judges.
I am also sick of Nerns candles on the walls.
Lets not vote for either one and vote to bring back SPARKLE JOSH!!!

Posted by Kathy – July 27, 2008 3:12 PM

Hidding the kiln was a great idea. Keeping anyone that would paint that beautiful wood grained table in the first episode should be fired. That was a SIN to do that. I hope Matt wins.

Posted by Mary – July 27, 2008 1:27 PM

Trish was okay, not a great designer though and definitely not a gal with a good personality. The way she lit into Tracee at the very beginning made me think that she, herself, was partly responsible for Tracee's attitude. Anyway, her fireplace is JUST a fireplace...nothing outstanding about it one bit. Sparkle, you are a fun person, but...

Posted by bee_sneeze – July 27, 2008 12:49 PM

Sparkle you rock, say it as it is. I'm disapointed in this season show. Trish was stuck between a rock and judges. Vern should have never said, a one trick pony. He is guilty + never changed since he started on trading spaces, he always uses small candles on walls and flat surfaces. Straight lines and brown always brown. Whats up with brown? Aren't there other crayons in the box? Why sets of 3, my brain thinks its studdering when patteren continues & repeats! Please give the public more credit than that. From the start all design fell short, the ceilings were way to high for low backed furniture nothing bridged the gap between the 2 and they used such small accessories and to many of them for the scale of the room. You should never walk into a room and see the back of a sofa. Where did the art work go, no one used any kind of hanging art in the earlier episodes. Don't they know how? Light fixtures such as chandliers were not used. Vern and the other judges and t.v. designer have a great responsibility to the public, people follow the trend that designers set & it also cost the watchers hard earned money. The judges are unfit to hold that position. They also didn't lead the challengers to any direction, not even saying take your style to the limit. Instead they comment how they used an item that the challengers had to pick out and use in the next room when they did, it was critized. Why can't a designer include a family heirloom and fit that into the room without destroying it. All factors should be met between home owner and designer. T.v. designer should educate the public and say its ok to keep your grandmothers candy dish, or chair, We can work around it and lets move you out of last year color brown into a new moving color that has not yet been so saturated, and commercialized. If designers use yellow of all shades, soon yellow is it. If designers say no formal living rooms than people soon say lets comfort the room {relax}. I think a good design is a room that to the eye looks formal and yet it sits comfy easy daily cleaning and different from the way to casual t.v. room why should the house have 2 of the same rooms. Give the people what they want and put it into a design uniquely made for that client. Using art, and heirlooms you shouldn't have to put 3 in a row.

Posted by syrrocco – July 27, 2008 12:44 PM

I jut read am lot of the blogs. I tend to agree with a lot of them. First, i also feel that none of the designers actually stood out this year and am very disappointed. I also agree that it is time for new judges to enter the scene like Candace or Kenneth or David or Lisa. then it would be fair and probably fun. i also didnt realize until someone said something about Verns signature is candles on the walls and flat screen tvs, you all are absolutely correct. thats pretty boring. i also like the idea of bringing back the best of the best designers from seasons 1,2,3 to makeup season 4. Hey people lets ban together and bombard hgtv network and demand what we want because without us they have no show.

Posted by Deb Newton – July 27, 2008 11:09 AM

to choose between matt and jen is going to be a tough one.

Posted by janice – July 27, 2008 6:30 AM

I too am disappointed that Trish was voted off. I had her winning from the first episode. I don't see how the game table is going to be used by anyone, unless they stand around it, and enclosing the kiln is a fire waiting to happen. And, yes, Vern's rooms ALWAYS have candles. I wonder how he would have reacted to one of the contestants using the same "trick". A big screen TV is easy to use, but who has time to light 25 candles on the wall!

Posted by Marina – July 27, 2008 1:51 AM

220901 i think this is the worst design star competition ive ever seen the best contestants were kicked off at the end matt and jen have nothing special i tought mikey v and trish would have been the finale two i think the judges did a poor decision of choosing all the contestant this season but the best of the worst were designers were shows were cancel maybe hgtv should cancel the judges shows

Posted by lisa – July 27, 2008 1:50 AM

Sparkle, I love your takes and comments. I love your charming accent. Will you move next door to me?

Posted by rosagallica – July 27, 2008 12:04 AM

I like Jennifer's design and I think she could design any room you would give her. I think she deserves to win.
I think sparkle Josh deserves to design also.

Posted by Lora – July 26, 2008 11:47 PM

Part of Trish's problem was if you have a dud carpenter in real life you can them,no leadership.Jennifer's roomm was too disjointed-the wall painting isn't good enough to use-think leonardo quality. What matt has done could be lived with for years.I feel most of the other designs would be unwanted house guests in short order.simplicity, class, and elegance rules Matt lock is king. charles

Posted by CHARLES CROCKETT – July 26, 2008 10:47 PM

I really liked Trish, she followed what her parents wanted and what her father needed.I don't think any of the designs have been dropdead georgeous, but,I have liked some better than others.I guess New Orleans will either make them or break them,I think Matt is up to the challenge...but....Jen could be too.
Actually,I think they should send Sparkle Josh,I adore him,and he would turn New Orleans on it's head...but I know Tennessee needs him.

Posted by M McFall – July 26, 2008 6:00 PM

OK. I have watched every single episode for every single Design Star--all three seasons. I am a really big Design Star fan. Anyway, would like to voice my thoughts and opinions, since I have my very own "Design Star" in my family--my Mom. Many people tell her she should have been an Interior Designer. She just does all this stuff on her own with intuition. Her mother, at one point, before mental illness took over, was very talented in this area as well. So all my life I was exposed to this and now, I am the third generation to share a deep interest in this. I did not pursue this career myself due to the fact I am nowhere near artistic since I was born Deaf and legally blind (visually impaired). So without further ado, here are my thoughts.

First of all, re the judges--I have to agree. Martha is an Editor, and tends to judge things on an editorial point of view. While this is necessary, I am not fully sure if it is needed at this point--where they are competing for the title/show of their own. Vern is an awesome designer. I believe that his design signature is the candles. The big screen tv is something that I notice Scripps Networks gives to many of the makeovers, regardless what show. As for Cynthia Rowley, her training actually is in design--both interior and fashion. She chose to utilize her career mostly in the fashion design outlet. She also designs cosmetic hues/styles for AVON. In fact, she recently developed two fragrances with them--one of which I have and adore.

Sparkle--how great it is to see you here! As I mentioned above I am Deaf and unfortunately am unable to hear his Vlog. I think Scripps Networks needs to provide the transcripts as well somwhere here on the site for those who cannot hear to obtain. Anyway, I think the judges missed your calling last season. Perhaps you just were out of your element, and now you have found your kniche--doing commentary type of work. I agree with the other poster--you should talk to them about having your own show where you do an in depth analysis of different designers. There are so many designers on HGTV that the possibilities here are absolutely endless.

Now I am down to the nitty gritty--the contestants. We are down to Jenn and Matt. I personally believe that both Michaels should have been given more opportunities. Mikey V is a phoenemon (sp)--he can do just about anything to a house--from top to bottom. He can do it all, and yet be a cop, doing the beat on the streets! Impressive. I think Mikey's windfall was that he did not practice or prepare enough for improving his skills on the camera. He is a lot like my husband--the "don't read directions" type and just wings it, LOL. Michael. Sighs. Michael was let go way too soon. I never saw Michael as whiney. I see him more as an extremely sensitive guy who has somewhat different learning styles than the others. I would not be suprised if he doesn't have some type of learning challenge--and he should have been accomodated accordingly. Tracee and Trish......ergh don't get me started. Those two were responsible for majority of the drama this season.

Matt is a great guy. Jenn utilized carpet for several reasons. Nbr one, she was short on time. Remember, the biggest challenge on Design Star is always challenge. She had to think of that and consider if redoing the floors was going to be do-able. Also, these shows--there is way more into it than we are made aware of. The designers and the homeowners actually communicate and agree on the design choices prior to actual completion and filming. So it is highly possible that perhaps the homeowners agreed to the carpet--temporarily--due to the time constrictions. Bottom line. I agree there could have been less drama on this season.

So far, I was right on the money with my choices for Design Star in Seasons 1 and 2. This time I am going for Jenn because I firmly believe she has the versatility it takes to be a host of a design show. Matt has awesome skills, but I am not quite convinced if he has the ability to partake a show on a whole. Granted, we haven't seen the biggest challenge yet, but we will. So I am going to say fo rnow I am leaning towards Jenn, but will wait until voting and cast my vote.

Design Star rocks. These reality shows are so totally awesome. I just wish there was some more variety of locations to be on tv--I am way down in Texas--The Gulf actually, and we don't get any of the action, LOL. Sure would be nice to have my own place someday....not blahborrrringgg white walls!

Am rambling....keep the comments coming...

Posted by DeafEskie – July 26, 2008 5:19 PM

I don't think we have to worry about Matts moms house burning. He made the comment that on the few occassions a year that it would be used that it could easily be moved into an open area. The comments made about these designers and the amount of time they are given is rediculous. The over sixty set still likes traditional design. Great design does't mean modern to everyone.

Posted by connie – July 26, 2008 3:27 PM

HGTV - are you listening!!? You need to redesign this show! You have two so-so designers in the finale. Are these the BEST designers in the country!? You need new judges and a new system. HERE'S A GREAT IDEA: keep ALL designers for the entire competition and have them earn points, for design and then on-screen personality. Perhaps use a combination of viewer points and a rotating panel of real designers' points. The contestant with the most points at the end wins. That gives each one an opportunity to show versatility, consistent talent, and a variety of designs.

Posted by Mickey – July 26, 2008 3:09 PM

First of all, Sparkle Josh should get a show commenting on the highlights of the week. Next, I would watch either Matt or Jen's show, they both have "it". I would change the channel if it was Trish's show, just too boring, no Pop! Good-luck to the finalists, they're both enjoyable.

Posted by Michelle – July 26, 2008 11:50 AM

I loved Sparkle Josh last year and so glad he's showing up on HGTV again. Josh -- you're FAB! Where is the innovation this year?? This season has been a disappointment. No one is inspiring me like in past seasons. One of Will Smith's designs from last season inspired a re-do of my daughter's bedroom (thanks Will!). David from Season 1 -- of course, FABULOUS! There were at least 5 very memorable designers that were off the charts last year with originality, innovation, and inspiration and any one of them could have won the competition. This year overall -- just flat. HGTV's goal should be to creatively inspire viewers to grab ideas from wonderful designers and push our own boundaries with design!
I had to laugh at some of the postings regarding the kiln -- they do need alot of breathing room when being used! Matt has shown a couple of cool innovations which I like. And Vern, while I really like the overall designs on his show -- Vern -- all those little candleholders all over the walls or the hanging candle lanterns suspended from ceilings -- one word -- DUSTING!! ;-)

I think Matt and Jen should team up and host a show together. Their strengths compliment one another...and the smile power between the 2 would be amazing. !

Posted by Kim – July 25, 2008 9:00 PM

First, I've never "blogged" before, but it seems like this season they were more concerned about drama and ratings than producing a real design competition this year. Very talented people were left off the initial list, period. Why only 9 contestants - if more were deserving - put them on too - don't make the judges battle over favorites or America vote between a diminutive but highly qualified female and a buxom smiley blonde who was less qualified - though the camera man loved to film her from behind as there are plenty of gratuitous shots of her bending and reaching (you should have kept them both - what would be wrong with 10 contestants?). With all the men judging - you KNEW who they would pick, but the other young lady was most deserving of a spot in the competition. Vern is a terrific judge, but the ladies lack style even in dressing themselves- most women at their age would not wear some of the things they chose to wear... how does this relate to good room design, how does this qualify them? Martha amazes me - how could she have liked Tracee's pathetic attempt at an Italian room? Elementary school children could have done better building a set for a play! Drama? only for the ratings...
Tracee seemed to have been left on week after week to please producers anxious to build drama - perhaps knowing most of us would tune in praying she would be dropped each week, left somewhat angry and disappointed.
Tracee made all the wrong decisions on the very first show. She chose the cave-like brown for a "sun room" and opposed the pool table that the judges loved. The winning features in the main living area were all things she opposed as well. The only things she did contribute were the silver leaf back sets to the feature wall on either side of the fireplace and the painting above the fireplace. Poor Scotty was the only one to complete a room alone, so he took the boot that week, undeservedly. Tracee's faux pas were far more disappointing for someone so arrogant about her design abilities. Producers must have thought the friction would create better ratings.. but Scotty deserved another shot to show us what he could do. He left too soon and Tracee left far too late. The only thing she did well was the stencil on the Opryland Suite wall... period. She brought the show down several notches with a lack of class, style and personal decorum. How cheap to stoop this low for ratings???
While it is true that Michael's room in the individual challenge was a bit generic ethnically, it wasn't a bad room, and it COULD have been a Spanish room... I could see it much more believably Spanish than the blue and green room Trish passed off for being Mexican.... How was her room more ethnic than his? Tracee's room was a complete flop... laughable and a joke. (Martha, what were you thinking?) Michael should have been spared based on previous weeks of excellent design choices, and Tracee should have already been gone with her horrible track record... but at least knocked off at that point and no later... her room was not a successful design by anyone's standards. Even my youngest children thought her room was horrible. I would rather have seen what Scotty might have been able to accomplish here.
Michael produced a usable, stylish, livable space... and after seeing International House Hunters (also on HGTV)... he is right, they have glass floors now in Spain - apparently quite a hit in Europe and abroad.
Truthfully, the ONLY person that understood the individual challenge was Jennifer. She is really the only one that accomplished the goal that round - and did so with style... period. All the others were disappointing -- how was HGTV "raising the bar" this season???
From the beginning, Matt has come across as the front-runner, but Jennifer definitely pulled into the competition with that challenge.
Trish is likable, but I have to agree that more of her design is good purchasing... though that is definitely part of it, she seems to lack the creativity that Matt and Jen have... but she DOES have style. Her Opryland Suite was definitely well done - though it might have been a different story if the cream sofa had made it upstairs for Jen's team. (Why didn't anyone think of getting maintenance to take the doors off their hinges for the stairwell?). Sadly, Stephanie did a great job buying the bedding for that suite, but couldn't speak up well enough in the judging to explain what she had done. She pegged the beds 100% according to Sara Evans... the beds in Trish's suite were lacking this, but had other creature comforts, coffee and biscotti, etc. Personally, if I were a guest in the suite, I would rather have the lofty bedding (Westin Hotels makes millions each year because of their "heavenly beds"). Sadly though, Stephanie did make the bad calls on the lighter yellow color, which Matt caught... he suggested a more buttery yellow... which Sara would have preferred (though I am not a yellow person and there is entirely too much yellow and orange used now in design... why???). The weird colors in Trish's bedroom of the suite just didn't work for me... Jennifer's bedroom was much more successful... and had the couch made it upstairs, I think there would have been a different winner.
(Someone else incorrectly pegged Matt with the leather soft, but Stephanie picked that if you re-watch the episode...)
And then... there were 3....
I have to say Trish did an excellent job, but was limited because she did what was functional for her parents... it worked, but was mostly great buying... it lacked opportunity for more creative work... though had she been more artistic herself, she might have found ways to infuse more of herself in the design. She is probably a good decorator... as most people are happy with well-purchased furnishings... but truly Matt and Jennifer are the deserving two to be in the finals. The creativity they both show qualifies them head and shoulders above the rest of the competition this year. At least the judges got this much correct (whew!).... some of us were really wondering WHAT they were doing this year... (though personally, I think the producers are limiting the judges in what they can and can't do, because I seriously can't imagine how Tracee stayed on after the first week... this had to be a bad executive decision not a design decision... Scotty's room wasn't as bad as Tracee's contributions to chaos even in week one! Get REAL... "best designer in this competition" - on what planet?)....
I'm anxiously waiting for the finale...but it is going to be really hard unless one of them seriously pulls ahead of the other in this challenge.
Personally, I would love to see Matt and Jennifer have a show together - Matt rocks out all the building and design solutions... that paired with Jennifer's natural artistic ability, design flair, and overall practicality could make them a truly dynamic designer duo! THINK ABOUT IT HGTV... you could not loose with these two paired together.
So, I guess I am hoping for a flat out tie!
They both deserve a show!

I'm a bit disappointed in this year's designers. Trish looks very familiar, is she from another show? And who wears heels when you have to get down to 'working'? She just wasn't a believable candidate to me...

I THINK AN EARLIER WRITER HAD A GREAT IDEA ........... GETTING BACK THE "BEST OF THE BEST" FROM THE PAST 2 SEASONS FOR A COMPETITION. THERE WAS A TALL BLOND YOUNG MAN THAT WAS WITH KIM AT THE END......HE WAS WONDERFUL !!! THEY COULD HAVE A GREAT SHOW TOGETHER ! WE COULD DO WITHOUT SOME OF THE WEEPY, OVERLY PRISSY GUYS WHO ARE SUCH PRIMA DONNAS !!! THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER SHOW WITH THE TALENT AND CLASS OF DEVINE DESIGN!!!!

I agree about recliner fear, truth is though hated in design world, many people absolutely love their recliners-especially handicapped individuals. Some recliners have a lift on them, making it easier for people with handicaps, or the elderly to rise out of the chair. Designers need to come down off their snobby soap boxes, and get in touch with the everyday American, this could open up a new niche-designing decent looking recliners, keeping the comfort, include some flair, and create a solution where design meets function, without coping out an using leather as the answer to the problem!
My goodness someone doesn't care for " Ms. Miles," we get it all ready, give it a rest-you do have a choice in the programing you decide to watch!

Posted by Babette – July 25, 2008 3:51 PM

I agree with so many others who have suggested new judges. Vern's "Deserving Design" rooms are much less classy than the ones he appeared to create in "Trading Spaces." What has happened? As for the other two judges, I don't grasp their contributions on the panel at all! I do think the final three all incorporated their families' wants in the design. Who would go into their family's home and create something they could not live with? I certainly would not want a "designer" coming into my home creating something that did not look like me and the way I live. I think Jennifer offers the most talent and look forward to her future designs.
Why are some of the respondents dissing David and Kim? I think they both are very talented! None of the design shows are one-person shows. They all have talented teams that contribute greatly to the final outcome. If there is another Design Star season, the "carpenters" for the finalists should all possess equal length of experience. Maybe a better idea for a Design Star show would be to have a designer (like Josh) do the shopping and a contestant create the design around the items!

Posted by bert – July 25, 2008 3:03 PM

I agree with everyone that says Trish should have been included in the final show. I don't know why the "winey" Mike had an opportunity to be on the show in the first place. I'm sure they could have found someone more mature and experienced. As far as Tracee, she should have been canceled on the first show. She also made some pretty harsh comments when she was voted off and therefore showed she was "not" a good competitor. I too don't know why the judges kept Matt on. Is it just to have one male/one female competitor? The judges all need to be replaced if there is going to be another show next year. I think that David Bromstadt is your NO#1 hit for all time. Maybe he could be a judge. Sorry, but this year's show leaves me unimpressed. -- In last week's episode, Jennifer and Trish both did rooms to please their families. Matt created a "space" but where's the large space to do crafts. Where will the ceramics be made. I agree with one of the other comments--the kiln is going to "burn the house down" if its turned on behind those partical walls. Why don't you rethink, and have Trish come back on for a "final three" in New Orleans?

Posted by MaryAnn – July 25, 2008 2:37 PM

I totally think that the judges should be replaced. I think that Jennifer designs are tacky and boring. The little pictures on the wall do not look classy at all. Trish would've have been a much better choice for the finals. And I also agree that Mike V. had a lot more to show than Jennifer. She should have been gone, not Trish. In regards to Matt, I think he sometimes forgets about the functionality part of a design. Mike V. and Trish would have been a better final showdown. In fact I would definitely watch a show hosted by both of them. I just hope Jennifer reviews her notes about design before the finals. But at this point I don't know if I am even interested in watching it.

Posted by Karla – July 25, 2008 1:23 PM

Felt they all had something to bring to the board. I like the traditional that Trish brought especially in mind of those who do not like loud colors or wild design. Agree with Lisa that the next show should be "the best of the best' from last seasons.

Posted by Pam – July 25, 2008 12:19 PM

Trish was clearly the most professional and most comfortable on camera. She designed for her clients and had a carpenter that was average at best. They voted off the best competitor.

Posted by Carla – July 25, 2008 10:30 AM

I think the contestants should have more time decorating by themselves in the beginning. Sometimes these people are getting voted off for someone else's hideous design just because they are team leader or because they don't get heard (referring more to other seasons, not Tracee). I think they should be judged individually all season rather than in a group most of the time. This isn't about team work, you get a show by yourself! Show us if you deserve it. By the way I think Vern is the token "Simon" of the group, he was never this annoying and mean on Trading Spaces.

Posted by Kimber – July 25, 2008 9:47 AM

Trish's show was cancelled because she redecorated her parents space rather than redesign it. There is a difference and that is what the judges are looking for. While Matt's space may have been less attractive, he did meet the challenge by redesigning the area. Good, bad or ugly, he tried something innovative with he kiln wall. All this aside, I disagree with comments about Jenn's "wallpaper". It was and still is ok for David Bromstad to include one of his pieces of "art" each episode, so why disparage Jenn for her creativity? I am intrigued by how she interprets design onto the walls and actually look forward to it as her signature. As an avid watcher of HGTV, I have noticed that the quality and quantity of the shows are starting to be geered to a more youthful audience. Fine, however, while some of us are well past the dorm or first home stage, we still are looking for a fresh point of view to incorporate into our home on a diy basis. So far Jenn is the only contestant who has brought that to the table. Keep that in mind Vern. She's not a one trick pony, she is a breath of fresh air and firmly gets my vote.

Posted by mjm – July 25, 2008 7:46 AM

Loved Sparkle Josh last year and these comments are fun - but really - Sparklette? That's kind of insulting to women. Why isn't everyone a Sparkler?

Posted by ISparkle – July 25, 2008 2:28 AM

Your show suffered a near death blow when Will was robbed of the opportunity of being one of the final two last season. He was clearly the best, most grounded, balanced designer in the contest, in my opinion. He said it best when he declared as one of the final four that his only competition was Kim. It seems to me that you are trying to compensate this season by stressing at the start both the need for good talk show host skills as well as design capability. These criteria were not made clear to the contestants until well into the season. Design was stressed but not hosting skills I don't believe your show can be redeemed without replacing the two female judges. It became apparent to me that Vern recognized Will's talent but was most likely out voted.

Posted by jackie long – July 25, 2008 2:23 AM

What's so brilliant about Trish covering up the outdated fireplace? Everytime we see that problem on a design show the bricks are either painted or covered. No surprises there. The real surprise was that HGTV would give Trish a guy that had been a carpenter all of two days. What were they thinking? She was definitely working under an unfair conditions.

Judges, she designed the room to suit her parents, not you. You didn't seem to take that into consideration. She was following the instructions.

Matt is great, has unique ideas and has the right personality for hosting a show. I'd watch him.

Jen's wall paintings are impressive but I have a very hard time getting past those bleached bangs hanging in her eyes. She's sooooo very 70's. I think before she host's a show she needs to vist TLC and the "What Not to Wear" crew for a makeover.

But most importanly, thank goodness Tracee is gone. I could hardly watch the series because of her whining. I wanted to reach in the television and shake her. Definitely not the host type. Zero warmth.

I was surprised to find out that many viewer did not know who Cynthia Rowley is. She is one of the top designers in this country.
She designs high fashion not just flip flops for Target. Martha McCully is an editor of a style magazine and if you ever read, you would find home designs in each issue as well as a magazine In Style Home that is issued several times a year. I was very disappointed with Tish's design for her parents. It looked a little like a page from a low end catalogue. Matt's design did not show anything creative design wise. I agree with Martha about the four black chairs being a little heavy. I don't think that it was a good idea having this year's contestants to design for their own family. It's too restrictive. Of course they want to please their families. Of course they are going to consider things like hiding a kiln or picking the perfect recliner for their parents. In the past the designs were for others. I don't think they did the exercises that really showed creativity in the past like dollar store assignment or everyone having the same room. That was where a lot of contestants really showed their skills. I know a lot of you did not like Michael. I think he was one of the more creative people on the show. I hated it when he cried. He's so young. I was glad to see Tracee go. Sorry about Mikey V. He didn't get a fair shake. Bring him back like you did Sparke Josh.

OH PLEASE. this video blog is as tired as this specimen's hair and outfits. This is 2008, get a little more current, maybe try the 90's.

I think all 3 designers did well interpeting their "clients" wishes and tastes. Trish's room WAS traditional and a little "textbook" but then so are her parents.

Josh's room showed great solutions to a problem area. All designers get at least one problem in every environment they design. His solution to the Kiln area was great. Not only was the fake wall a terrific remedy, but it was in scale to the environment. not sure about the game table though, seemed a little out of scale to the bulky chairs.

Jen's "wall murals" TIRED TIRED TIRED, much like David's tacky paintings on Colorsplash. I had an oppurtunity to see one of his "pieces of art", not great up close. I have a feeling Jen's wall treatment would read the same way in person.
Plus I think those types of treatments become dated very quickly.

Classic design executed with imagination and a lack of gimmicky "signatures" lasts much longer.

Josh and HGTV,
Just wanted to agree with some of the others viewers.I think this season's show is not as good,we wanted to see more single designs. I also agree that we need a new cast of judges. Maybe yourself,DAVID Bromstadt, and Candace OR LISA LAPORTA. Need to keep CLIVE he's great. Keep up the great work and hopefully we will see you hosting your own show.SPARKLE ON.

Posted by karen – July 24, 2008 10:43 PM

I also agree-why was Tracie on the show sooooo long? she was a blamer, and she never could have had a show of her own! I think they wasted time with her.
I was surprised this week when Trish left, as I think she just picked a design her parents were comfortable with. Maybe it wasn't modern, but she pleased their wants, and I believe that was what she was asked to do.
My thoughts.

In general I have been very disappointed in this season. Disappointed in the judges and the quality of the contestants. When I watch the nextfoodnetwork star, they are all very respectiveful of each other. In this show I feel like the contestants are back in junior high school. I have to agree with Karen. The only one I would have watched is Trish. I think the judges made a big mistake. Whoever wins, I have no intentions of watching their show. I love watching David's Color Splash. At least he only paints a picture, which is tastefully done, not an entire wall. I used to Tivo Vern's show Deserving Design. I don't anymore because it is basically boring. Vern used to be great in his design. If he was a contestant on this show, he would have probably been voted off by the judges. Speaking of the judges, I am disappointed in their thlnking. Tirsh is the only one I would have had design a room in my home. I don't know if the judges read these messages are the powers that be at HGTV, but I think new judges and better contestants, like last year, needs to be visited. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to voice my opinion. Posted by Ann on July 27, 2008.

I didn't think most of the ones in this group really had any 'class'. There were others in the first two groups that would have won in this group easily. One man that I remember really had class, and I feel bad that I don't remember his name, was the black man that was one of the last ones to be eliminated last year. Overall I was disappointed this year. Do you think that these were really the best of all the people who entered the contest?

Posted by Joan – July 24, 2008 8:13 PM

I can't believe this year's participants.
NOBODY.
Nobody for any year's participlants, actually.
David....so very gay. His assitant - total valley girl!
Myles - the most horrfic designs and show on HGTV I have ever seen in 15 years.

Totally scrap this show.

Where in the world are the wonderful old shows such as Kitty Bartholomew?

\

Kim - such horrific designs.
This year ---- YUCK!

Posted by Blinglover – July 24, 2008 8:08 PM

This year I saw a lot of shopping, arguing and back stabbing along with poor judging. The seasons before this seemed to have more challenging scenarios. The only really good design I saw this year was the first one where Matt and Mike designed a really clever bedroom. What I found really interesting was the fact that Trish was voted off because she designed something the client wanted. Last year there was a designer who was voted off because he didn't design a room that a client would want. He put the beds in the living room. I agree that we could use some new judges. Perhaps Candice and the designers on Designed to Sell. They at least take on problems and make them into really good looking rooms. Of course they also are given great carpenters, electricians and painters. Even I can paint and shop and as you can tell from these comments, I can also be mean spirited.

Posted by Linda – July 24, 2008 7:52 PM

I do think Trish was setup, if someone offered me that handyman for free I wouldn't take him. I did all the carpentry work on my own homes since my father taught me to lay my first wood floor at ten, and i wouldn't concider my self a true carpenter, just handy. what you gave her to work with was a ball and chain around her neck, I believe you meant to hang her out to dry, she should have at least been given a chance for new Orleans. You could have just let two go on the last show. it would have been much more fair. the judges saw what we did. I don't know how they cancelled her with a clear concience. i am sorry that is just how it seems to me.

Posted by tina – July 24, 2008 7:32 PM

I thought Trish was somewhat of a troublemaker in recent shows, but her designs were well done. The room she did for her family was what they wanted! Nothing wrong with it, except the pillows. Do the Judges not like traditional? I liked what Jennifer did in her sister's living/dining room. She has a great personality and talent. Would definitely watch her show. I think Matt would be better as a carpenter on a "Do It Your Self Show" than decorater. The room he did for his parents was boring! I don't get why the girls had living rooms to decorate and he had a basement craft room. They all should have had a carpenter that knew what he was doing. Trish had a handicap with her guy. The show is not consistient.
Also, agree with all the comments about the Judges! They have to go.Sorry Judges. I too, use to like Vern, but what has happened to him? He can be very testy with the contestants. Is that him, or do the producers want him to be that way?
I enjoy watching David's show, but after watching Kim's show a couple of times, will not watch. What is with her hair? That alone keeps me from watching her!

Posted by Sue – July 24, 2008 7:07 PM

I, also think Trish got a raw deal. She did what her clients (parents needed). I also worry about the heat from the kiln. My daughter keeps hers in the car port against a brick wall. Tracee should have been the one to go first. She thought she was best at everything. She would never shop for me. She messed up the kitchen deal by holding up the tile backsplash until it was too late. Did you just keep her for drama?
I do like Jennifer, but Matt leaves me wondering.

Posted by Peggy Austin – July 24, 2008 6:55 PM

I like both of the finalists, but I, too, was amazed at the weird order and reasoning behind those who were already dismissed. Neither of these finalists really has the "oomph" to make me want to watch their show. I'm not all emotionally involved, bitter and boycotting or anything... I just don't think I'll watch whatever new show comes of this season.

Now Sparkle Josh on the other hand, I'd watch! He was born to host an HGTV show! C'MONNNNNN... y'all really need to figure this out. Could we add him as a third on the ballot? Double dog dare you, HGTV...

Posted by Sue Johnson, Tulsa – July 24, 2008 6:33 PM

This years show has no "pizzaz"!! The rooms are all very predictable and boring.

Posted by Joanne – July 24, 2008 5:52 PM

Josh: Your rock! My wife and I truly enjoy your feedback and think you should have your own show providing design commentary. We loved you last season and are so glad your blog is available for this season's Design Star. Take good care of yourself and never change. You are honest, fun, and a breath of fresh air.

Posted by P. K. O'Malley – July 24, 2008 5:33 PM

I have read all these comments and I am totally surprised to believe that several of you believe that the kiln is going to be used behind the door. It was housed behind the door just to eliminate any ugly sight. People who uses kilns know that they have to have proper ventilation and room to work. I believe that Matt showed everyone that the door slides out so the kiln can be removed from the hiding place. I believe Matt really did not like his blk chairs either; but he did not have much to chose from at that furniture store. In Co., how far would one have to travel to get to another furniture store? I agree that Trish and Jen should be the final two, but its too late now. I will watch nervously Sunday night to see who the winner will be. I agree about the judges, need a change for next season.

Posted by blueblack – July 24, 2008 5:33 PM

What were the judges thinking? My wife and I were totally shocked that Trish's show was cancelled. Matt's plain drab room with mismatched chairs and no seating for the game table did not deliver a professionally deisgned room. If hanging a plain curtain to cover a wall is qualification to be a designer, how can I apply for next year's show? It is time for HGTV to revamp Design Star's format and change judges if they want to keep a loyal audience. We want to suggest Candice, Ken and David as the new judges.

Posted by P. K. O'Malley – July 24, 2008 5:25 PM

I think that they should have gotten rid of every "designer" this season. There wasn't an original thought, idea or plan among them (that goes for the "judges" to)! Name calling and crying-where were the adults. There was nothing inspiring about anything Trish did (she appears to smile innocently and acts like a team player while she sticks that knife in). I could have come up with her plans on my own in a pinch. As far as shopping goes-I didn't see anyone with a particular talent for that either. Most of the furniture and assessories could have been picked up in a couple of hours (not days) especially with those outcomes. There is more to designing a room tham painting and adding accents. I think a design star should have creativity, imagination and be inspiring. No one appears to have those qualities this season. If you want to have a successful new show, you need to pass by all on this season. I really wouldn't watch any of these people! well, maybe Matt and Mickey V. They would be good together-a practical show on how to build things to enhance your space. "The novice's guide to building a wall unit, etc." These guys have skill-plus they are plesant and play well together.

Posted by dlee – July 24, 2008 5:14 PM

I, too, was disappointed to see Trish go. But I think she was too professional to have her own show (from HGTV's perspective). She didn't have a "hook" for TV. Jen's hair and Matt's lack thereof add some personality. I thought Matt's parents showed little confidence in him by giving him a room he couldn't mess up that much. He didn't remove any built-ins; the only thing he did was cover the kilm but they can remove that as well as the hideous furniture. Jen's design was better but Trish was the best and she got no credit for it. She did what the client wanted and put much thought into it. They set her up to fail with that carpenter. Shame on the producers of a show I truly enjoy - even with the whining. Josh and Alice from season one should both have their own shows, along with Trish. I could care less if Matt or Jen wins. Neither are as good as what we have seen before.

new judges---i totally agree. no more painted decals on the walls. use real vines, mirors, unside down hung wreaths with "lots of stuff" in them, window shades hung to create an "art" look. oh yeah, i forgot, that;s my house style. let's get real in what ordinary people like. new judges, i totally agree

Posted by bobbi kemna – July 24, 2008 3:29 PM

I can't believe that Trish was let go over Matt. Matt's design was AWFUL-just four BIG BLACK chairs. I felt that it was done this way so that there would be a male and female at the end. Trish was too classy for you? You needed to consider her parents' needs and their generation. The judges made a mistake (huge). What a dissappointment.

Posted by Gail – July 24, 2008 3:20 PM

I agree w/many others: TRACEE should have been taken off FIRST off. I didn't like her attitude. I'd love to see Lisa Laporta or David Bromstad or even Candace Olson as judges. I'd only heard of Vern Yip when I saw the 1st Design Star. An editor is NOT a designer unless he/she has the proper credentials. I use candles too, but feel Vern is overdoing them. I do like his designs. I LOVE Josh...I'm one of his followers. He simply Sparkles! Love his attitude. Love David Bromstad & try NEVER to miss his shows. Angelo Surmelis is great too. I used ideas from HGTV in my own home, but I agree w/other bloggers: new judges, less drama, and less attitude from DS contestants. Competition is good; ugliness & blaming others for failure is NOT. I believe that Trish, Matt, and Jenn should have a three-way final competition. Nothing like New Orleans to present a REAL challenge! Give Josh his own show, even if it's only weekly! YEAH. Also, I forget her name, but the runner-up to David B should have her own show; I prefer that to "Homes Across Americä." I'll never be rich or have a house that looks like those featured there. Would also love to see the runner-up to Myles of Style. Showcase MickyV... I thought he was tops too!

SPARKLE JOSH. Watched CASH IN THE ATTIC the other am, and who was sitting in the auction house audience? SPARKLE JOSH. Not bidding, just sitting pretty? and smiling.

was that before you were on design star ?

Posted by Lu – July 24, 2008 1:01 PM

Well, Trish's exit was disappointing to say the least. Frankly, I'm not sure why, but I just don't care for Matt, and I probably would not be able to watch him in his own show. He comes across as arrogant and fake. He's come up with some interesting ideas and designs, but just as many are questionable. Jennifer is approachable and more "real", and her designs are "doable" by the average person. She takes chances with her painting designs, but they fit the client and the challenge well. I've been confused by the judges decisions, and really don't think this show is a good vehicle for ANYone to shine as they would in real-life situations. I don't think I'll watch another season, as this season has been one frustrating, unrealistic, and confusingly judged design challenge after another.

Posted by CJ – July 24, 2008 1:23 AM

OMG, Matt did an aweful job making over his parents room. JeZZZZZZZZZZZ that ugly wall on wheels to hide the kiln, just plain ugly. The flat screen tv was at an odd angle hard to watch even with the many many black chairs. That could have been a feature wall with a design not just ugly functionally. The room had no character, personality and NO WOW factor. The rug was ugly, non descript. He built nothing since he had a carpenter. The game table had no chairs, or are they supposed to move the heavy black chairs around the table to play games? Why did he put the table where he did? Odd place for the table Let's hope he is not the winner. Jennifer is much better but I think whoever wins will most likely get their show cancelled later in the season. Matt sucks!!!! The judges suck especially the weird one with the ugly clothes, jewelry, and even stranger hair.

This season's Design Star contestants show very little real design talent, when compared to the previous two years. I look at each new episode, but so far this season, there is NOTHING to Wow me. Some of the 2nd and 3rd runners up from previous years showed more talent than the current potential stars.

Posted by Bobby – July 23, 2008 11:46 PM

I am not sure I would watch either of the two remaining contestants, I don'r think either of them are on the same level as Kim Myles, and no where near David Bromstad.

Posted by Pam – July 23, 2008 7:15 PM

Here's an idea for the HGTV bigwigs:
When it is left to the public next week to vote for Matt or Jennifer, add a third option - a write-in vote! I bet Sparkle Josh would give these two a run for their money. There must be some way that Sparkle could be incorporated in HGTV programming - otherwise, what a waste!

Posted by Rosalind T. – July 23, 2008 4:59 PM

After faithfully watching all three seasons, I don’t care who wins now. I think this whole season needs to be scrapped and written off as one giant OPPS. In other words, Design Star 3 went from tedium to apathy with a side trip to monotony. Oh, and one last comment —– please, please, please loose the current judges so we can get a fresh and new perspective on design. Preferably the new judges that you chose HGTV will have interior design in their respective backgrounds and not some writer for a magazine or a "designer" of a clothing line. Granted Vern has credentials but he is the worst offender of all three of them. In my opinion, all three are out to lunch! Thought: why not ask David Bromstad to be a guest judge. And while we are at it why not invite the runners up from Season 1 and Season 2 to come back and be contestants on Season 4? I think that would stir up the mix.

I might like these comments as well as the show... But I've enjoyed every episode, especially this last one. However, I have a dilema. Season 2 had a white chaise behind Lisa (in the opening promo) and I'd love to find out where to buy it. I've combed the internet and sent questions to HGTV - all to no avail. Does anyone remember? Any suggestions of where to look? I've downloaded the clips of the full episodes, but they don't include the opening part. Thanks a bunch and keep those comments coming - they're as interesting as the show! sjmimi

I have been reading through these comments from the past couple of days and I have a few of my own. I think the casting this season was substandard as compared to the first two seasons. However, the final two left are the right two from the bunch. I'm pretty sure that if you use common sense that you could figure out that the wall Matt designed to hide the kiln is on wheels and you would not leave it there while you were using the kiln as to start a fire! You would move it away from the kiln people! Am I the only one who thinks that Trish lied about her age? I am looking forward to the final show and voting for the best designer. I hope next season is better. I love David, Kim & Sparkle Josh!!!!

Posted by Cindy J. – July 23, 2008 12:44 PM

Oh, boy - where to start! Trish answered the needs of her parents, and should not have been canceled. Period. Matt did not think through the different areas sufficiently well, and needed to liven up the walls, and get some stools for the game table. His parents may like neutrals, but he should have livened it up with green or blue accessories, which would not punch out your eyes like red. The kiln cover was good, and for those who didn't hear it, I think they said Mom hardly ever uses it. Hopefully, she will pull the wall all the way out and get that machine away from the real wall! But the room was not interesting and not arranged well. He's a sweetie, but I think not Design Star material. Like Mikey V, he should be given a position as a carpenter or assistant on another show. THAT he excels at! Jennifer gave the right touch to her sister's home - whimsical, I think someone said. Vern, I really don't think you should have used One-trick-pony to describe her work. If she is, then so are you with candles and David with paintings. Every designer has some kind of trademark!!!!! And she is skilled with hers. Was no one watching when she said, due to time restraints, she could not refinish the wood floors???? The stress factor for time is unrealistic on big jobs like these, producers. They should have a week to do the big final individual project which determines the final two people. And please, yes, get some new judges: Kenneth Brown, Candice Olson, Sara Richardson, Angelo Surmelis, Lisa LaPorta maybe? One thing they all have is common sense, and their profession is interior design, not fashion. Love you lots, HGTV, but LISTEN TO YOUR VIEWERS!!!!

I agree with those who are disappointed with Trish's elimination. She deserves to be a finalist just as much as Matt. Why not let all three compete in the end? She did design a room that would make her parents happy and it looked great-- she did meet the main goals. Her changes (flooring and fireplace) made significant impact on the room. The lazy-boy led Trish to a traditional decorating scheme, so it seemed unfair for the judges to complain about the traditional style. The end product seemed polished and unified. It could probably work well with the rest of the house. Shouldn't good designers be able to work with different styles to meet their client's needs? I was not that impressed with Matt's room. Although he is a great craftsman when he is building things, he seems to focus so much on what he builds at the expense of a unified and well-planned design scheme. The built-in kiln seems overhyped by the judges. A movable screen might have been less costly and creative. I did not see how anyone will be working on crafts in this room. The 4 leather chairs repeat his mistake with Sara Evans' room. I know that he wanted the seating to be easy to clean, but they do overpower the room, and don't really work well with the taller game table. I was also bothered by the purple construction paper left dangling on the door. Is the door not part of the room? so surprised that not one judge mentioned it since it was so out of place and sloppy. (I recall an episode in which judges made a big deal of leaving a strip of painter's tape on the edge of a wall --causing Jennifer and her partner to come close to being eliminated). The judges should have a clearer criteria for their evaluations of the rooms so there is more credibility and consistency to their decision. In this case, the elimination of Trish seemed random since she seemed to do just as well, if not better, than Matt.

Too bad there can't be three final contestants, I was torn as to whom should be the final two. The New Orleans challenge should be a great test of design, especially for such deserving recipients. As far as the judges are concerned, I truly feel we need a change, Vern can stay but the other two really need to exit the studio! David B. your show is awesome as are you and Kim is coming along nicely. Great to hear from Josh, he really needs a regular spot on HGTV,his "sparkling" insight is so refreshing!

Sparkle!!! Hello, My friend and me loved it when you were in the last season. By the way I live in Tennessee. Hated to see you go. I hated to see Trish leave! I though her work was good. Matt came to the show with such a great displays stated that he made his own furniture, but always has an excuse why he didn't do such a good job each week. I was really impressed, but he should have been sent packing long before now. Jennifer has proven her ability to become a great designer and I hope she wins. I will be voting for her.

Posted by Mae – July 23, 2008 12:49 AM

I'd like to see three judges for next season in these categories of design: architectural, landscaping and interior. Really feel that would give a great balance to Design Star. Enjoy your thoughts and comments Sparkle. I'm thinking the judges are looking for the "Wow Factor" in design. Which, all three designers were super. Just think no one this season has had that "Wow" factor. Do think Jenn has been clever with her painting skills. I'd like to see her kick that up a notch. As an artist, I always enjoy out of the box thinking in design.

Trish was my favorite - very strong, skilled, organized, has taste, showed nice personality to the carpenter she got. I am sure she was set up to loose with such carpenter. I think when she managed to do a good room for her parents regardless, the judges could not find a reason to drop her. Your room is nice, yor show is cancelled. Really, just could not believe my eyes. Vern backed her, but the ladies could not judge fair.

What is it with all the alarmist "burn the house down" blogs about the kiln! This was a hobbist kiln. No venting is required. Required space for it is a total of 50-51". The kiln is 25" in diameter. That leaves 24", or 12" clearance on each side and that's exactly how mine has been set up, and regularly used, for years. Matts enclosure met that requirement. Just because the kiln is heated to 1700 - 2300 degrees on the inside does not mean it's 2300 degrees on the outside! In fact, the exterior of mine has never gotten as hot as your iron would be on the low setting. If your oven is 500 degrees on the inside, is it 500 on the outside? Do you leave the oven door open and heat the kitchen to 500 degrees? Of Course Not! Fire bricks insulation, people, fire bricks insulation!

Well, I predicted that a white woman would win.Was shocked that Trish was eliminated. I think Jen should be getting some braces for that overbite--forget the hair! Maybe Invisalign will be the solution for her--help her please! That overbite is distracting.
I didn't see much talent with this group--looks like the selectors were looking for drama this year. Actually, some of Tracee's choices were very good; she was just unfortunate that the camera caught her in a bad light AND she carried on during the filming--too bad, I though she would've been good on camera, but would've needed alot of rehearsing.

I love Sparkle's weekly comments! HGTV should think about giving him his own show -- maybe a weekly show commenting on and hitting the highlights of HGTV's other design shows.

Posted by momnmo – July 22, 2008 6:16 PM

Vern's show drives me crazy - not only the candles, but EVERY SINGLE ONE gets a "new flat screen tv!" Candles and tv - his signature pieces. He seems a nice guy, but not so original in the components of his design.

Posted by sandi – July 22, 2008 6:12 PM

Sorry, but I am glad that Trish is gone. She should have been gone a long time ago. She seems to be one of those fake people who thinks that they are a little bit better than everyone else. Her "designs" were simply good buying. They were all the same. She was the behind-the-scenes insigator of a lot of the drama. Matt and Jenn had more creative ideas. I look forward to seeing which one comes up with the most creative ideas this week.

Posted by Kerianne – July 22, 2008 3:41 PM

Sparkle Josh, I have totally enjoyed all of your VLOGS through this whole competition. You have an awesome sense of humor and love your comments. When are you getting your own show? Keep sparkling :)

Posted by Michele – July 22, 2008 3:24 PM

Many people have never heard of Cynthia based on the comments posted. I believe that I have a beach bag and a pair of flip flops that she designed for Target. I'm not sure that this makes her a good choice to judge interior design. Perhaps there is more to her than I know... Martha is an editor, not a designer. The show needs new judges that are designers in their own right so that the judging is more balanced. I agree with the comments about Vern. EVERY design of his includes candles on the wall! He is talented though, so I don't mind listening to him.

I watched last season and thought the show was good although I hated the fighting. I agree with those who thought this season was not about design but drama. I couldn't believe the first episode when Vern chased the whiney Michael down the hall to invite him back to compete. Tracee should have been gone after the first challenge with her attitude. I wanted to see more of what Mikey V could have done on this own. Trish shouldn't have been let go, her's was the best room. Does anyone remember that Matt was the one who picked out the leather sofa for the Nashville room that was suppose to be shabby chic? Now here he goes again and picks 4 big leather chairs for his parents room. Boring. And what was with Jenn covering up the hard wood floors? The carpeting was a cop out. I realize that their families were going to have to live with the rooms after they were done but the challenge was about design not about getting their families free new stuff. I am sure if they got their own show they could get lots of deals to fix but their family's rooms. HGTV lets get back to what you are about, stylish homes. Forget the drama, forget the haunted mansions, forget the whiners. Give us professionals who know how to deal with stress, work with others and can give us something interesting to look at.

Trish and Micky V would have been a GREAT show together!!! I like the remaining 2. Think they are great people. They just don't pull me in to learn "something new"! Something that I never thought about doing before and would like to try.
For heavens sake! WHO was the idiot to leave Tracee on for so long!! What a waste of time!! NO ONE is going to watch someone who is SO arrogant!!!! Here's a GREAT suggestion!! Bring back the best of the best in Season 1 and 2 to try again!! Several really good people who deserve a second chance to show what they've learned from their first try!!

Posted by Lisa – July 22, 2008 12:12 PM

I love Josh, I can't wait to read his next comments, what a funny guy. I hope HGTV keeps him on . I didn't understand Matt's game table, did the judges not see that the table was higher than the leather chairs, how are these kids suppose to play the games. Now you need stools. I think Trish's room was better, she knew what they liked and wanted, I know Matt' room was hard but the layout and design could have been better. Jen is the girl to win. Go Sparkle!

Posted by Anje – July 22, 2008 9:41 AM

i've always enjoyed watching this program but to tell u the truth the judges ask alot from them by only giving the designer's 12-24 hours to complete their room's. Really,i know your only tring to judge them under pressure but be real!!! Also, for the past 3 wks the judges haven't had postive things to say about Matt (and i agree) his designs aren't thought throu and the end results reflect it. Trish was voted off over Matt...can't believe that one judges!!!! She designed her room with her clients in mind NOT yours judges...you made a very big mistake because i don't think i'll watch next season. Maybe the judges should go back to design school next season!!!!!!!

Posted by dee – July 22, 2008 9:22 AM

I'm not too happy with the decision to keep Matt on for the final episode. During the re-model of his mom's craft room, he spent 1.5 of the 3 days just shopping! He BOUGHT the game table, he didn't design it or build it or even refinish it, but the judges thought it was so cool anyway. He just bought everything, stuck it in the middle of the room in a square and called it design. UGH! I give Matt credit for the movable tv-wall, but when you look a little closer, there are no seats in the room facing it. What's the point of a tv in the room if there's no place to watch it? I'd like to see a lot more designing on the show and a lot less shopping.

Posted by Bead Box Kathy – July 22, 2008 8:32 AM

I really felt like Trish got thrown under the bus, for the sake of having a girl/boy twosome for the final show. If they were so high on Matt's four chairs, then they should have declared it a three-way tie and moved them all into the finals, with the voting audience making the decision. Trish completed the main task of a designer, "do what the client wants". I live in a region of the US where probably less than 10 % of the homes are decorated in modern or comtemporary style. We believe in families and families living their houses, therefore we have traditional and country style warm homes, where every room is usable - none are for show only. I think that most of the audience would rather see something they could see their family living in, rather than wild colors, polka dot walls and some of the other things we have seen on this show. Also, just take a look at the way the lady judges dress sometime and you can see their sense of style. One other thing, there have been several comments about Vern and I must say that I, too, am changing my opinion of him. When I see him walk up to a $300M or $400M house and makeover a room for someone (with all the candles on the wall), I find it very disturbing when there are really a lot of deserving people who are giving of themselves every day to help others, who are living in very run down houses and they could really use some help. I am sure that he could use that same amount of money and help two or three families just get some beds and some decent linens, or a dining room set and some dishes. That would be really helping those who are deserving.

I watched Design Star last night where Trish was sent home for making her parents living room more beautiful while keeping it comfortable for them at the same time. I couldn't believe Matt was kept for creating a design that doesn't work and didn't look so hot either. The very first time his mother uses her kiln, she's going to burn the house down. Kilns need lots of air circulation around them as they reach temps of 2700 or higher. The partial walls built up close to it are going to catch fire, no doubt about it. I find it hard to believe that none of the judges, Clive, Matt, or Matts mother didn't think of this. Its a poor design and Matts show should have been cancelled.

Posted by Gloria Frestedt – July 22, 2008 7:33 AM

I can't beleive that Trish was voted off. I think Matt's room was terrible. I have always voted for the Design Star, but not this time. I think the best designer is gone.

Posted by Vicki – July 22, 2008 6:40 AM

Well, I agree with so many others! What were the judges thinking? I think the judges should of kept all three contestants this week. If not for any other purpose than to send them to " New Orleans ",where more people could be helped! It wouldn't hurt if all three competed again next week, or if we, the public, voted for one of the three left! The judges really blew it this time!!

Posted by sue – July 22, 2008 3:06 AM

Well, Sparkle; as always, you you make me chuckle! It wasn't 'til I saw the show a second time that I caught on to what you said about Matt's room. He definately had the hardest challenge. Another thing, Sparkle Josh: you & Vern mentioned her room's ugliest feature. Her parent's fireplace was SSSO ugly & dated, that I could almost imagine June Cleaver waltzing by it with a feather-duster...Trish's solution was brilliant and classy. Her challenge was the second toughest, because, excuse me? How good can you make a room look with a LAZY BOY in the corner, anyway? Plus she was stuck with the least-efficient, least-experienced carpenter. Jen's room was shined, except choosing that carpet didn't compliment the design at all. If she'd chosen a light bamboo Pergo-type floor it would have blown everyone out of the water, so that makes me think it was a budget choice. In the end I was so impressed by all three. From earlier episodes on, Matt, Trish & Jennifer impressed me the most. Even so, I can't say I was shocked. The biggest reason that Matt & Jennifer remained, was that on stage & on camera, Jennifer & Matt always had this positive glow & smile, no matter how serious a setback they came upon. I think that Trish does superb, classy work, and her hosting shines on camera, but every so often her smile fades during the construction. And believe me, Trish, if that was me in your shoes, I'd be toast on camera under that kind of stress. Matt & Jennifer somehow manage to smile & glow through the toughest moments, and that may be why they made all the way to the end.

Posted by Christian – July 22, 2008 2:22 AM

I do not understand why Trish was voted off! Most of us out here want our homes to look like a show room! Matt's room had no art work on the walls, the cabinets and wood work were out dated and what was up with the purple paper stuck on the door!!! At least he could have removed that! The room was plain, it looked unfinished. I like him, but I felt he fell short. I don't even think you could use those chairs with that game table!

Posted by Val – July 22, 2008 12:10 AM

I couldn't get enough of Design Star until this year...what is going on?!? No one is really standing out, we haven't seen enough individual work, we have seen too much sniping and nastiness. Please go back to the format you had on the first season. Your second season wasn't quite as good as the first but quite acceptable, but this season needs major revamping. Replacing Vern might be a start - he is not the final word on design at all!
David Bromstadt continues to be terrific - his show involves the audience - great! Kim Mylesis a bit of a disappointment - her designs are inconsistent.
I hope you listen to your audience!

What ever happened to designers who can do more than paint?

Look at the winners in season 1 and 2. Have any of them shown us how to resolve a design dilema?

Personal artwork
Creative shopping

this year we get a painter who can paint a leaf.

We've seen tables cut in half.
We've seen a very creative use of space with 4 beds.
We saw how to hide a kiln.

But in the end, we're gonna get soft stepped with a very talented painter who is a likeable host.

HGTV needs to think about the other 50% of the population who have design issues far beyond a can of paint.

Hiding that kiln was the kinda show I'll watch. I like Jen but I have no time to watch another painter.

Posted by Eric – July 21, 2008 8:40 PM

The right two are the Final Two. I agree with the poster who said Trish was responsible for a lot of the "Tracee" drama.

I would watch a show with either Jen or Matt!

Jennifer is going to Win!!!!!
But Please... someone please fix her HAIR...

SHE is a Great Host, talented designer...
But Her Hair drives me Crazy.....
Josh, if Jennifer fixed her Hair half as good as yours....Wow...Design Star with Great Hair...

I agree with Stephanie, this seasons group of so-called designers are very boring, uncreative and predictable. Trish,Matt and Jen cannot compare to the natural talents of David and Kim. It seems to me that most of the bloggers on today must be friends and family members of the final two because of their praising and glorifying something even I could do better for the amount of money they were given each week.

Posted by paula jones – July 21, 2008 7:46 PM

Wife & I totally shocked to see Trish gone. She has been clearly the class of this group from the beginning. This was more shocking than how long Tracee lasted. Putting "Ray the Carpenter" on this show was an insult to us viewers and like sabotage against Trish. Obviously, the show presents something other than what these judges see. Matt should have gone. You don't box in a kiln! I suggest that they watch that carefully when they use it as I envision anything from a melted TV up to a huge house fire.

Posted by Al – July 21, 2008 7:45 PM

Matt is great. He is a real designer, not just a shopper. I, too, would have had a hard time making a decision to eliminate one of the three contestants.

I agree that the three judges - ALL OF THEM - need to be replaced. So one of them is a "world renowned" designer (whom no one I talk to has ever heard of), and another is a fashion magazine editor (hello, this is re-decorating, not women's fashion), and another has a show where he sticks candles on all the walls and ceilings of virtually every project he does (talk about BORING, Verne). Let's get some folks who do it every day. Candace, David, Kenneth, Lisa, there are a whole bunch of folks who would do a great job and not be so snooty and also not be so slow to boot the contestants who diss on each other - Michael and Trish were the worst!

The contest needs a face lift, and the place to start is with the judges. I vote to impeach all three.

And I vote for Matt to win.

Posted by Bob – July 21, 2008 7:40 PM

I was not surprised to see Trish go as I got that sinking feeling with the way they were portraying her carpenter problems. I like her attitude and I know she did the room completely for her parents approval. I like the way Matt honored his parents wishes as well. I love Jen's graphic paint abilities too! It would have been a hard choice for me to pick one to go. People are hard on Vern and the other judges, but I really believe the producers encouraged them to be harsh and take on the 'American Idol' persona. I dont think they like being that way (if you look at them in the background on the exits of the losing person they always look sad). Vern was very sweet the last season and an encourager, the other 2 didnt stomp on feelings either. I think the producers really tried to make this a dramatic season and boy did they ever get people's hackles up this time! Anyway, 2 very nice designers are in the finals I wish them luck. (and best wishes to Trish too). :)

Posted by Gaby – July 21, 2008 7:21 PM

Josh I love listening to your commentary on these challenges, you are great. Love your wit. Well I see some are surprised that Trish left and some are surprised that Trish had fans and thought she should go. I liked all three but it was disappointing that Trish was let go for doing a traditional room. That is the best explanation that the judges could come up with. Then the challenge should have been something else, like other clients non-family members. Last year they chose a teenager who was in a wheelchair. That is a challenge to see how a designer will come up with a room to meet the need of the of a dresser or bed not being the standard measurements and to accommodate someone with a disability and give them a designer room.

Posted by Mel – July 21, 2008 7:01 PM

I'm not sure how so many bloggers have left comments here of shock about Trish leaving the show. She did okay, but I agree with the judges choice... her room had a very show room look, it was boring. I did think it was great that she updated the fireplace, but the overall design fell short, there weren't wall hangings, or improved lighting. The room felt bare, like there was something missing. I think the judges are still impressed by Matt's innovative solution ideas and by Jennifer's whimsical
