HGTV KitchenDesign Blog: The Kitchen Chronicles

I should tell you that I have more than a passing interest in kitchens. I work at Scripps Networks -- the company that runs the cable networks HGTV, DIY, Food Network, Fine Living and GAC (Great American Country). I oversee several of the company's websites, including HGTV.com, DIYnetwork.com, HGTVpro.com, HGTVkitchendesign.com and HGTVbathdesign.com.

In my job I get the pleasure of looking at a lot of fabulous kitchens, as well as the latest kitchen products. And I hear advice from top kitchen experts. That said, I'm more of an expert on building websites that I am on remodeling kitchens. But all this exposure to great kitchens has sunk in on several levels: My tastes have risen a few notches. I now lean toward contemporary designs (more later on how Gretchen wanted a country kitchen). And I understand how a well done kitchen can boost the value of a home.

Working on HGTV's new Kitchen Design website this year got me inspired to begin the kitchen remodel at home. This gives me a chance to put into practice many of the things I'm learning at work. So of course I want granite countertops and cool faucets. I want to try out stainless steel countertops on the island. All new kitchens have a wine fridge under the counter, right? I even tried to talk Gretchen into concrete countertops, but she's not going there.

Here's a picture of our daughter Maggie in the old kitchen. It doesn't look half bad from this angle...

I too spend alot of time "Kitchen"shopping thru your network ties. I guess the Kitchen is the one room that I AM the boss of design. My husband's idea is always "decorative yet functional". My rural midwest home is over 100 years old and want to feel like I am still keeping up with style. My NEW idea I am excited about but not sure how to tie it all together. "Heritage Hints" is what I want my guests to see when they walk in my kitchen. I have Norwegian roots and would love to tie in the unique "Rosemaling" art and bold colors of red/blue/green/yellow. Presently I have a relaxing and clean look of White and Blue with Stainless Steel trim. I still like the SS and would like to carry it on to the back splash/drop above my countertops. Just think of the possiblities of all Heritage roots that can be designed.Norwegian will fit perfectly into my old--lots of oak-- home.

I'm trying to use the Kitchen Design sight and I'm having trouble with installing some of the items. The floors, vent, and some cabnets. I was really getting good using it to design my kitchen, now I'm frustrated...I can't get them to enter the grid or 3-D. If you have a min. please call me, 310-649-1956[prefered]or E-mail me. Thankyou Debra Perry
