The lighting plan

Posted by jsexton – January 28, 2007 4:54 PM

We like a lot of light-- both in the form of natural light and a good lighting plan. With the new kitchen we installed a slew of can lights, and then three hanging pendant lights over the island bartop, and one pendant over the sink. The pendants came from the George Kovacs Lighting collection. We purchased them from Stokes Lighting in Knoxville.

We also installed small "puck" lights (they are about the shape of a hockey puck) underneath the cabinets, so the countertops will have a nice amount of light shining on them. These are halogen lights.

With all the lights turned on the place is lit up like Las Vegas. The nice thing is, we don't have to turn on all the lights at once. We can use different lights for different tasks. Or turn on just a few lights for a more romatic atmosphere.

Hi -- looks terrific. Where is the electrical connection for the puck lights -- inside your cabinerts? Any problems with the halogens blowing out often? Did you install the pucks yourself?

Lisa,
The electrical wiring for the inside cabinet lights actually comes through the ceiling through the top of the cabinets. The electrician installed all the lights. The puck lights at the bottom of the cabinets have a special piece of wood covering that the cabinet guys installed and worked out the details with the electrician. The only time we've had any issues with the halogen lights was when I first was putting items in the cabinets. Several things clunked down and blew the lights. Once I figured out what was happening it's been fine and we haven't had any more blow outs. I think I shot about 3 lights in the process and had to replace them (which, by the way, was very easy to do!).

WOW! nice job, your kitchen is beautiful. What is your island countertop, granite? and polished wood? looks good. I did one colour granite throughout kitchen but love that contrast.

Moe,
The pendant lights are by an artist who makes lots of different art lighting called, Kovacs. These lights came from a local lighting gallery called Stokes Lighting.

Hi there,
I am hoping someone can help me identify a mini-pendant light fixture that I saw in a store. I really like these lights and would like to use them in the kitchen of my new home. It is a cylindrical satin aluminum finish light with perforations on the bottom half of the fixture and a green glass or acrylic ring bisecting the middle of the fixture. The closest thing I found to it on the web is one called the "larry pendant" made by George Kovacs. You can do a google search for larry pendant light and find a picture of it. The problem with this one is the finish is not exactly the same and the ring in the middle comes in either blue or clear. The fixtures I saw have a green ring. I dont know if there is another manufacturer that makes a virtually identical product as I described or if it is a discontinued product by George Kovacs. I have looked and scoured the web and even have asked the store I saw them in for help, Ive been to local lighting stores and nobody can help me. I need the help of design professionals or lighting experts that may be able to help. If someone out there who knows pendant lights could help, I would be in debt. I really love those lights but I cant find them anywhere. Help !!!!!
