Cabinets part 3: contrast is cool

Posted by jsexton – February 27, 2007 10:42 PM

We decided to use two colors with our cabinets. The cabinets against the walls are an off-white and the cabinets for the island are dark brown. We liked the contrast this brings to the kitchen. And we really like how the light oak floor looks against the dark island.

One thing we learned in the process of remodeling this kitchen is that contrast is good. If you pick light floors, light cabinets and light countertops, the kitchen will look fairly monotone with everything blending together. The same thing happens when you choose all dark colors. Of course much of this falls to personal taste. But we like the contrast we got with light wood floors, and the dark cabinets. Then against the walls we have the lighter cabinets contrasting with dark granite countertops, and a dark backsplash .

The dark wood makes it cozy. I think it would look like a whitewash in all lite colors. I have planned to do my kitchen in lite wood floors next week, I think I will put new dark doors on the cupboards. Thanks, good project.

Where did you buy your cabinets? What is the name of the manufacturer??

In answer to a couple of the questions: Our cabinets were purchased from Home Depot, they are KraftMaid. The stain on the dark cabinets is called 'peppercorn' on oak. The light is a frost glaze over maple.
Good luck!

great stuff here! thanks! we gutted our kitchen in our 40 year old split level. and We've opened the wall to the dining room and will use that area as the eating area. the kitchen isn't big enough for a large island so we are planning on using a wall cabinet 12" x 48" as the base with a counter top that overhangs a bit. I know its not large but either is our space. We are ready to order our birch wood cabinents (toffee) with a black granite countertop (violetta). I like the contrast of dark cabinets to a lighter island. Would you suggest a white-ish cabinet or a contrasting countertop?

I am looking for ideas to refinish my cabinets. I need ideas for changing the looks of them to make them have a more up to date look.
