Spin to Win
Libby Gill made the first presentation at the NKBA Industry Trends Marketplace Center Stage at KBIS opening day. This former entertainment public relations executive and consultant (she helped the Dr. Phil show establish its brand) gave a synopsis of her upcoming afternoon presentation. Here's a synopsis of her synopsis.
You need to brand your business and you need to use PR to help get the word out. PR is free press, a reporter deciding to endorse you by writing or video taping you. For example, this is PR for Libby Gill PR consultant (www.LibbyGill.com).
Libby's Rule # 1: You are Your Brand. Define how you are different from your competition. Determine what your core business purpose is (you probably shouldn't say that it's making money), what you stand for, how you bring your values to your company, and how you are different from your competitors.
Rule # 2: Use the Media, Don't Let Them Use You. I'm not sure where this blog fits into that equation, but I suppose that means that I am being used. Anyway, figure out why you are being interviewed by a press person and what your agenda is. Know that before you get started, and know that your agenda and the media's agenda are not the same thing. If your brand were summed up in a bumper sticker, what would it say?
Rule # 3: Combine a Powerful Plan with Flawless Execution. Create a written PR strategy, with targeted media list and your objective in reaching each outlet. I believe a PR consultant could help you with this. In fact, that's right, because you should use the best PR team possible or the most expensive one you can afford, whichever comes first. They can help you understand how to think like a journalist and interview like a pro. To interview like a pro, you should know your 30-second pitch, state key points up front, and don't let journalists put words in your mouth.
We hope that helps.
